This thread is where you'll find the skeleton to fill out when making your character, as well as some simple guidelines to follow to make the whole process more successful. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask via PM or simply in the interest or OOC threads.

Character Creation Guidelines
  • Read the mechanics and worldbuilding pages before starting your character: You don't need to go crazy in depth or memorize anything, but giving these pages a quick once over will make it much easier to build your character and integrate them into the setting we have here.

  • Try to give your character some independent goals and motivations: This is a sandbox rp and while there will always be a some kind of GM lead gameplay going on you will also be highly encouraged to do your own thing and make your own fun at times so it will be useful to have some objectives of your own to pursue built into your character.

  • Do not post your character here in the thread right away: When you've finished your sheet, PM it to me for approval and once we've gone through that I'll let you know you can post it here, this is to cut down on confusion for people referencing the thread for examples for their own sheets.

  • If you decide to change the formatting provided for the character skeleton, make sure you still include all the information asked for: If you're creating a bb code heavy format particularly, a mobile friendly version of you CS without any coding would be greatly appreciated.

[*]Name: The Body
Origin: -
Rank: (The higher an ability’s rank is the more powerful and versatile it can be but the more expensive it is to acquire in terms of experience points. The maximum rank that a character can raise their abilities to is limited by their hazard level: a concept discussed below.)
Effect: represents the characters overall physical fitness, resilience and strength. The higher you raise this ability the greater physical feats your character is capable of and they will be able to withstand greater amounts of physical punishment.

[*]Name: The Mind
Origin: -
Rank: (The higher an ability’s rank is the more powerful and versatile it can be but the more expensive it is to acquire in terms of experience points. The maximum rank that a character can raise their abilities to is limited by their hazard level: a concept discussed below.)
Effect: represents the character’s overall mental fortitude and capacity for concentration. Characters with a highly rank mind ability are more perceptive, alert and better suited to handling complex mental tasks in high pressure situations, they are also better able to withstand mental attacks or illusions. It’s important to note that character’s with low mind scores can still be intelligent or wise in various ways as it isn’t a complete assessment of their personality, the mind ability is more an assessment of the ability to calculate quickly and effectively in crises.

Limitations: (Any drawbacks or weaknesses the ability has. Sufficiently disadvantageous limitations can bring down the overall point cost of the ability, as an ability's rank is increased you may decide to remove or mitigate its limitations rather than improving its effects.)

    Defilah Coal
    Sorceress of Sludge

    Former Identity: Carmen Kostas

    Gender: Female

    Age: 34

Appearance: While Defilah is technically in her mid-thirties, thanks to her magic she doesn't look a day over twenty-four. She's slender, olive-skinned, and on the shorter side at only 5'3". Her wavy hair is the color of stout beer and spills several inches past her shoulders. Her lips are full. Her chin is angular. And her bright brown eyes often shimmer with iridescent colors like spilt gasoline in sunlight.

    Sorcery isn't a beauty contest.
    Defilah

Personality: Since becoming a witch Defilah has become exceedingly cynical and disillusioned with morality. But in an effort to not be insufferable, she's developed a grim sense of humor, as well as a devil-may-care flippancy to most of her troubles. Despite her best efforts she still has the remnants of an actual conscience. And it occasionally manages to get in the way of her villainous desires.

She was four-years-old when her parents made the difficult decision to pick up their roots in Philadelphia and head west for Topeka Kansas. That's where Great Plains Chemicals, a multimillion dollar pesticide developer and manufacturer, was (and still is) headquartered. Carmen's father, Xander Kostas, took an upper management position with GPC and then proceeded to deftly work his way up its corporate ladder. He eventually reached the top, serving as the company's chief executive officer.

Her father was passionate about his work and had a knack for it. Unfortunately for Carmen, her younger brother, and their mother, Xander Kostas' commitment towards his family was less than commendable. Carmen's parents divorced when she was nine. This was mostly the result of her father falling for another woman while he was still married. A younger, more attractive woman than Carmen's mother.

For the sake of the children, Carmen's mother, Teresa, opted to remain in Topeka. Carmen's relationship with her father worsened with each passing year. And by the time she graduated high school she outright despised him. The two rarely spoke from then on.

In an effort to please her mother, Carmen studied music (piano) in college, though she quickly switched her major to environmental science. Shortly after that Carmen began referring to herself as an environmental activist. Her friends and family frequently called her a zealot. Xander Kostas suspected his daughter's newfound fanaticism was largely a consequence of her contempt for him. After all, GPC was a well-known environmental offender/polluter.

Sometime in her mid-twenties Carmen's ever-growing "activism" garnered her some new friends—an eco-terrorist outfit named Emancipate Earth. She became a frequent tagalong of EE, and started to accumulate an arrest record as a result. For minor violations, mostly. But one incident ended with Carmen staring down actual prison time. While scuffling with a crew of Emancipate Earth members, a security guard at a natural gas well suffered a bad fall. The guard would go on to lose his life as a result of his injuries. Carmen managed to narrowly avoid life inside a cage, thanks to a first-rate lawyer her mother paid for. The others in the EE crew were not so fortunate.

After that Carmen promised to give up her "activism" and focus on self-improvement. She was having a nice go of it before she received the worse news of her life: Cancer. 56% survival rate. A world-shaking, unforeseeable diagnosis for someone her age. Her father paid her a surprise visit after learning of her illness. Despite their troubled history both parties deeply wanted to reconcile. It was during that visit when Xander Kostas gave his daughter a curious, timeworn little book. He explained that the book, named the Scriptures of Spoil, could save her.

The Scriptures outlined an obscure witchcraft known as Diablerie Immunda. A black magic of pollution. Its teachings and claims were the antithesis of many of Carmen's values. But her father pointed out that the Scripture suggested that it could protect her from any illness if she would just commit to it.

Everything about the book sickened Carmen, and so did the knowledge of her father possessing it. Her father's visit had began as comforting and long-overdue, but it finished ugly. This would go on to forever haunt Carmen, as he tragically died in a plane crash less than three weeks later.

In her deepest grief, in her deepest fear of death, Carmen surrendered her objections and turned to the book her father had placed in her hands. And it showed her the way of the witch.

Nature has more to say than you might think....you just have to know how to listen...

Personal Information
Civilian Identity
Zhao, Ling

watercolor-handsome-asian-man-painting-fashion-illustration-hand-drawn-portrait-stylish-guy-white-background-watercolor-137498712.jpg

Age
26

Personality
The subject loves animals dearly, but as for him.... The subject seems to be a seemingly quiet, but resilient and kind individual. Not one for too many words, which seems to stem from a deep shyness towards other people; this is likely out of fear of judgment. His small stature, quiet nature, and fondness for animals drew much and more cruel attention to him. Yet that resilient nature previously mentioned carried him through. No amount of pain or cruelty seemed to sour him to people as a whole, though this investigator would not have been shocked had that been the case. It seems the subject has an an incredible sense of personal accountability, and believes no group should ever be held for the actions of the individual. This investigator would be remiss however, if they did not underline their own incompetence. Further personality information was unobtainable as the subject rarely speaks aloud.

Biography
The subject was found in 2006 by local police in REDACTED, between two horrendously mutilated corpses. Fleeing immigrants shielding their child from whatever had come to kill them. Thankfully they succeeded. The young boy had no name, yet somehow was accepted into the REDACTED adoption agency and rehomed with shockingly little issue. The subject adapted seemlessly into his new family, and took on the name Ling Zhao after his adopted maternal grandfather. The years passed and the Zhao family happily saw Ling off to REDACTED community college in 2024. This was where concrete information began to be available on the subject. Over the course of his studies he wrote many, now copied and filed, reports on his love for, experience with, and learnings on animals and the "world they live in". His passion, dedication, and not least of all his lengthy research lead to his acceptance into REDACTED University's global ecology program starting in 2026. REDACTED University being of course within a mere REDACTED miles of Verity Point. First person witness accounts over his college years contained numerous stories of animals being almost comically docile in nature towards the subject. His natural affinity for animals or perhaps their natural affinity for each other would have served him well even if he hadn't gained supernatural abilities....however.....

In the year 2027, as we all know, the Firaxons invaded. The subject was happily whiling away his days studying and reaching out to animals programs and the like when the time came. He wasn't a genius, or athletic beyond the ordinary. Yet when the time came he gave his all in his attempts to help Verity Point and the surrounding territories when they came under attack. There is a rumor that he even assisted Agent Liberty before they both gained abilities. All attempts to confirm this with either party has been met with silence. During one of these attempts the subject was attempting to help an injured crocodile near the Whately Wharf. A detonation [the crashing of the ship atop Liberty?] was the last thing the subject remembers before waking up in his current form. As many others worldwide, he had been genetically altered. Seemingly fused with the crocodile in question, the subject has since shown improved athletic and possibly intellectual capability. Amongst the standard things you'd expect of a crocodile. The subject spent the remaining next couple years of the invasion healing and coming to terms with his new form at home with his family. Thankfully, as the subject says, animals never seemed to notice the difference in his appearance.

In the year 2029, as we all know....again, the Procession was performed. The subject, was once again incredibly close to a focal point. Having returned to REDACTED University to complete his degree, he was in Verity Point upon the night of the Procession. By the subject's own testimony he had been swimming in the wharf when the Procession took place. Once more did he black out, yet this time he woke up unchanged....physically at least. He found himself laying atop a thinly woven sheet of plant matter in the middle of the wharf, surrounded by all manner of river life brushing against his dangling extremities. Eyewitness reports claim a "gentle green light" came from the wharf near their home, where the subject was estimated to have obtained his powers over aspects of nature. Three years have passed since, all of which this investigator has personally observed him. With and without his knowledge. He continues to grow in power and breadth of his abilities. He graduated Summa Cum Laude, and continues to further his ecological research. All the while, this investigator will note down all that we can.

Parahuman Information
WARNING! HAZARD LEVEL: 3
Abilities
  • Name: The Body
    Origin: Natural, Firaxon genetic altering
    Rank: 10
Effect: Represents the subject's overall physical fitness, resilience, and strength. Improved drastically via forced fusing with a crocodile.

  • Name: The Mind
    Origin: Natural, Firaxon genetic altering[?]
    Rank: 10
Effect: Represents the subject’s overall mental fortitude and capacity for concentration.

  • Name: "Wildcall"
    Origin: Magical
    Rank: 30
Effect: The subject appears to be capable of both communicating with and convincing animals, both wild and tamed, to fight on his behalf. The size and number of animals he can control seems to grow with time.
    Limitations: Unknown

  • Name: "Wildsight"
    Origin: Magical
    Rank: 10
Effect: The subject seems capable of seeing what any animal doing as he bids sees, regardless of distance.
Limitations: The subject does not seem capable of seeing through more than any one pair of eyes at a time. As such, their original body is vulnerable when they are seeing through another.

  • Name: "Bloomwyrd"
    Origin: Magical
    Rank: 5
Effect: The subject appears to be capable of controlling plants much as he does animals.
Limitations: This is a relatively recent development, and the subject is still practicing. As such his control, power, and the like are lacking. The "response" of the plants as the subject calls it seems to be sluggish at best. For now this would at most dangerous be a modestly acceptable ambush ability.

Support Abilities

  • Name: "Lily"
    Rank: 10
Effect: A Siberian tiger the subject supposedly befriended on an expedition to northeast China. It seems to have almost human like awareness, and is rarely seen far from the subject's person.
Limitations: Appears to be in all other capacities, a completely normal tiger.

  • Barista - Copy (2) - Copy.jpg
    Michael Cho
    Not Your Typical Barista
    Full Name: Michael "Mooyung" Cho
    Gender: Male

    Age: 21

One order of machiatto coming right up!
    Michael Mooyung Cho

Personality: Michael’s pretty sharp and attentive, but that might not be immediately apparent due to the easygoing yet excitable aura radiating from him. As one who likes to listen as much as he loves to talk, he knows the names, faces, and preferences of all his clientele, serving up coffee that’s just right for the customer. In dealing with, erm, more rowdy customers, he maintains his work persona except takes on a very passive-aggressive stance that often leaves the customer redder than a beet and storming out the door.

When it comes to relationships, he doesn’t have any really strong relationships beyond his close family and a few others. The topic of his parents is a very sore topic for him that he immediately tries to divert whenever it gets brought up. Other than that, he tends to be on good terms with everyone he meets.

Biography: Born in Korea and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Michael was part of a wealthy family. However, because of this, Michael was forced through several academic programs, something he detested and resisted. By high school, his relationship with his parents was so strained that they sent him to a boarding school. Come sophomore year, due an incident at the school (that Michael may or may not have been involved with), all the students were temporarily sent back home. It was at that time when he was home that the Procession hit. In short, he would have burned the house down had it not been for his sister’s quick thinking. From then on, with the exception of a few hideable changes, he remained relatively normal.

Michael continued highschool without a hitch until college application season. His parents wanted him to go to several different colleges, but rather choosing a college they liked, Michael chose VCU as his top (but secret) pick. He didn’t want to go to a college his parents picked, and more importantly, he felt Verity Point could give answers on his condition. Regardless of his reasons, when his parents found out, they were furious, leading them to refuse paying for his education, and he expected as much, as he already made preparations during the college season. The hour his graduation finished, he immediately got into his rent-a-van and drove off to Verity Point, settling in as a full-time barista until school started.

During his time at Verity Point, he grew to like the city with all its weird quirks and to love his job for all the odd people he got to meet. However, despite doing well as a barista, the additional burden of classes was too much for him mentally and financially. When Christmas rolled around, after seeing the financial burden college was and hearing some advice from a friend, he ultimately put college on hold and decided to continue working as a barista.

Moving to current day, Michael is still happily working at his first location, Bridge Under, which has improved greatly from when he first started working. Though he still has plans for college, as of now, he’s saving up money while working with P.H.I.R.A. on various things like his condition or normal volunteer work.

  • Ten thousand years for one heir. Ten thousand hammer-blows for one sword.

    Bright BladeThe Wandering Sword

Former Identity: Yang Shangduo, aka Sam Yang.

    Gender: Male
    Age: 24

The path is laid out for me. Every stone has been laid down by the efforts of thousand generations. All I have to do is walk it.
    Yang

Personality: A humble young man who thinks quickly on their feat, and believes in the best of humanity. He's always willing to give others at least one chance. He thinks of the world he now lives in with a sense of wonderment. No matter how fantastical the Earth becomes, he still feels like every extranormal phenomena he comes across is worth marveling at. He also has a deep sense of compassion for others, driving him as he becomes a hero.

Ten thousand years ago, there was a sect of martial arts masters feared and renowned in china for their unmatched martial skill. The Heavenly Blade sect wielded its arts in defense of China's people against monsters and tyrants alike, battling against maniacal masterminds, marauding dragons, and the demons of the netherworld. The family that oversaw their sect saw great prominence due to the fact of their incredibly powerful bloodline as much as their skills in the martial arts. They were descended of gods, and their demigod nature allowed them to shatter swords upon their skin and crush stone in their hands with raw might. For many years, they protected both their home country and the world, aiding heroes on other continents in facing world-spanning threats.

But the era of myth had an end. Eventually, the enemies dried up, and the family considered their long vigil over. They sealed their own bloodline away, becoming a normal family, the only remnants of their grandeur a book of their family techniques, as well as their mystical family sword. And for a time, they thrived and prospered in peace. The family moved to the States during the Gold Rush, eventually filtering through to settle in Iowa, in the humble city of Verity Point. Only one member of the family at any given time knew all the old stories and secrets, just in case the day came when it might be needed.

And then the bloody Firaxon Invasion happened, which in and of itself was enough to make the family patriarch start considering breaking out the old Heavenly Blade. The invasion quickly was relatively quickly contained, and handled however, and so the family settled into an uneasy peace. Grandfather Ho decided to put the manual and sword back away into the family vault. No, it was when the Procession occurred that the choice was taken completely out of his hands. Yang Shangduo awoke to his bloodline, as magical creatures cavorted in the streets, and he learned the first steps of the Heavenly Blade Arts in trial by fire. From that point on, Yang Shangduo found himself the bearer of the Heavenly Blades' legacy; a hero of a new age of myth and legend.

Time would tell what adventures he will have.
