Our Lantern

Fragments of ice, moulded into elegant designs,
fell from the blackened sky
as the candle extinguished itself by falling below the starry horizon.
I touched the bark of the sleeping tree,
glazed in white,
and I said to him that the cold was worrisome.
He only chuckled as a work of art emerged:
the crunching of the snow chimed like bells,
the pattern of the prints told a story of winter,
and the crescent moon sang its chorus of winds
as if a kabuki dance was held here on the hill.
He set the paper lantern down on the branch of the tree
then turned and smiled at me.
The darkness and the cold will be warded, he said,
as long as the lantern is lit.
The amber light enchanted the snow
as it basked us with the flame’s wish for warmth.
He approached me with gentle steps
as I shifted my eyes to the landscape.
He said to me that for a boy I should be more firm.
A fog slipped out of my lips and I spoke whispering words,
maybe when we remain together as friends, I’ll become stronger
as long as you’re my lantern.
Chuckling, he said that he felt the same too and together
we are one lantern.
He rested his arm over my shoulder and leaned into me.
Together, we saw:

Forests laid to rest
As all dreams rose to the sky
For the ice to thrive.
