Welcome to Storybrooke!

Home of all the magical fairy tales you may or may not have heard of. Of course, no one here knows they're just a fairy tale creature from the Enchanted Forest, as the Evil Queen cursed them all with false memories of this town and this world. Still, that magic barrier is breaking, and it might not be long before the spell is broken completely.

Opening Setting
Wednesday, July 12th, Current Year
2:00 PM

There is an annual town festival that takes place in the town to celebrating the founding of Storybrooke. The Queen and the Dark One are the only ones who know what this really means... for now. The festival is a week long event, usually lasting Monday through Friday. There's games, face painting, rides, food trucks, baking, contests, and so much more. Every night is ended with a big fireworks display! And yet this year is different. This year, it might be the last time the founding festival takes place.

Maybe a year later, they all will meet back in the Enchanted Forest.

Keaton Landau a.k.a. Emperor Kuzco

Ah, and what a glorious day it was for an event such as this! Naturally, it was only so spectacular because he'd had his hand in the planning for this event, as he had the year previously and indirectly for other years before. And once again, he'd convinced his mother to bring some of the zoo's animals (especially the llamas) to amuse the children. His favorite llama, Bernard, was enjoying the attention, lowering his neck so multiple little kids could scratch him behind the ear and brush their hands through his fur. It warmed his heart to see other children appreciate the greatest animal on the planet.

"Excellent work, Bernard," he told the llama, scratching the llama's neck in his favorite spot. The llama did not speak, of course, though perhaps he would have gone to less parties if that were possible. Alas. "I'm sure you'll be fine here while I go look around?" Bernard blinked his dark brown eyes, which Keaton assumed meant he would be alright. He knew the truth, however: the llama would dearly miss his presence while he was away. Everyone surely did.

Keaton gave his friend one last loving scratch before leaping over the fence and surveying the festival before him. It was too bad the celebration was in full swing already, or he would have found a way to make a dramatic entrance to top all his previous dramatic entrances. And this one would have involved riding atop Bernard... He'd have to write that down it was brilliant.

Slipping his hands into his pockets, Keaton set off to find amusement. Whether that would come in the form of a person or an activity remained to be seen...

Francisco Moretti a.k.a. Tramp
UR0U.gif

Why was he here again?

Going to the Storybrooke-wide festival was not exactly part of Cisco's plan to lay low and not get recognized as the Francisco Moretti. Even working at a restaurant was better than this, since barely anyone saw his face while he was boiling water or spreading sauce over a heaping pile of noodles. Otherwise, he mostly kept to himself and tried to avoid crowds like this at all costs.

So why exactly had he let Freya talk him into coming here? Also, where was she?

It wasn't really a surprise that he'd lost her as soon as they'd arrived, but he could only hope she wasn't getting into trouble. She had a habit of doing that, but at least she wasn't being accused of drug trafficking and getting arrested only to be proven innocent... not that he was worried about something like that happening to her. But, well... it had happened to him, back when he was more like Freya, so...

At this point, he could only hope she'd found Jonah and was trying to get a drink or something. Not that that was the best situation, but at least it was better than nothing. Still, he wasn't in the mood to try and get in between two people he cared about who had a tendency to make bad decisions.

Ugh, when had he become such a goodie two shoes? He needed some spaghetti. Stat.

Of course, the mayor just had to ask Serana to supply the festival with baked goods. And of course, she just had to say yes. So, she's been up since four this morning, so that the damn mayor would have her fresh apple pie. Setting the last of her cookies out for display, she can't help but smile out of relief. Everything was perfect. Save for the small stain on her dress, but that can't be helped at this point. When you shove a town's worth of pastries into a Honda civic, you are going to get messy. Thankfully, she had convinced one of her employees to help out today. They were going to alternate who was working and who was enjoying the festival, but it's still disappointing to not be able to explore as she wished to.

"You go ahead dear, I'll stay first" She speaks to her employee, who then smiles in thanks and goes off to have fun. Oh, how Serana wishes she could do the same. The mayor absolutley terrifies her, so it's really not as if she had any choice, but to volunteer. Of course, the money earned from these baked goods is also going to charity, so if she refused to work, she was refusing to help charity. And Serana can't imagine ever doing that. Hurting people's feelings is a sin she would never forgive herself for. So, here she stands, handing out deserts that may just as well be bunches of her savings, which she has very little of already.

Rosalyn FRANCO
Belle
The day was warm, as if tailor-made for the town festival to be taking place now. Rosie walked out of her house and took a deep breath in. The air was filled with summer, sweet smells from the bakery stand woven with the deliciousness of the food trucks. Rosalyn loved the festival and there was not one day she would miss. It happened every year, every year it lasted a week and every year, Rosie would visit the fair every single day. It brought her memories back. Memories of the day when she was still a little girl, her hand slipped into calloused one of her dad and they would roam the streets, eat unhealthy food and cotton candy until they were full and Rosie would take the rides until she was so tired she’d pass out on her father’s shoulder on their way home.

This was simply the tradition and she wanted to keep it at all costs. Her dad was not able to go anymore. God knew he wouldn’t even remember what was happening. The good man was barely able to remember who she was and she was his own daughter. Bringing him into the crowd of people would do more harm than benefit. And so Rosie was walking alone, sunshades covering her face and snazzy little backpack bumping on her back. Naturally, there was a book packed inside because what if she got bored after a while? Or what if she found a nice little place, ideal for reading, and she wouldn’t have anything with her? That was definitely not worth the risk.

Arriving to the edge of the fair, she stopped and looked around. Everything was as she remembered. People filling the streets, noise and laughter echoing all around and the smells became even greater. A smile curled Rosie’s lips and she got in. Not even the fact that most people considered her weird or stuck-up bothered her. Though how they found her stuck-up, that was beyond her. Then again, as her dad always said, if you can’t change the situation, change the way you feel about it. And so Rosie stopped caring.

Her first steps led to the familiar stand that was the source of those incredible sweet smells. Serana had already come and set up for the day. No fair would complete without her divine pastries and Rose couldn’t wait to get one of those blueberry scones. That smile got even wider when she noticed her best friend. “Hey!” she exclaimed from afar and waved. “Looks amazing, as always.” she praised Serana’s work and went to give her friend a hug. “Do you think you could spare a moment and walk with me?” she then asked, handing Ana money for the desired piece of pastry already. And Serana would know already what Rosalyn was craving.

Dominica Marin
Ariel, the Little Mermaid
A mane of red hair peaked from behind the corner. Bright hazel brown eyes checked the street, making sure he was nowhere to be seen. And only when the coast was clear, Dominica Marin walked from around the corner and put her glasses on. Today was not the day she wanted to deal with James and his overprotective methods. What was that about anyway? He was not her father so why did he always had something to say about her? Ugh, she ran away from her foster family to finally be free and rid of all authorities and people trying to tell her how to live her own life. If she wanted a patronizing father figure, she would have stayed with Ray and Melissa and their other fours kids, duuh!

But since there was no sight of the man whose car Domi managed to hitchhike on her way here, she was strutting towards the fair as if the town belonged to her. Gentle breeze was playing with her red locks and a smug smirk appeared on her face as she joined the crowd of town citizens, pretending to be one of them. After all, her aunt lived just around the corner, she was just not feeling well so she stayed at home. At least that was what everyone here believed. And while they believed it, there was no point in changing the story or amend it. Dominica was safe.

Back in Breckenridge, there were fairs too and Domi even got to go but only as the whole family and there was this whole set of idiotic rules, they couldn’t run, they couldn’t argue, speak louder than others, eat sweets and only one ride was allowed so they had to agree, all five kids, what they wanted to do. It usually ended in a tremendous argument and yelling and no ride. It was just obnoxious. But now, Nikki was here on her own and could do anything she wanted. Just point her finger and go, let fate carry her around on its wings and enjoy the freedom.

And then she noticed it. A petting zoo. A fucking petting zoo in the middle of the town square. She squealed and with an extra pep in her step, started to walk towards that place. And her squeal got even louder then. “Yuuuuuu! Llamas!!!” That childish exclamation attracted a few looks her way but Dominica didn’t care at all, she was already preoccupied by the cute animal and ran to the fence, reaching her hand towards the fluffy babe. “Aren’t you the cutest little thing here?” she cooed and scratched the llama’s neck. The animal seemed to like it. “OMG, you’re totally amazing. What’s your name, precious, hm?” she asked and noticed a girl next to her. “Yeah, I’m not crazy, I know they don’t talk.” Domi laughed, shrugging a little. “I’ve just never seen a live one.”

River Bryant
Flynn Rider
The fair was the most perfect place. At least River thought so. It was the ideal place to find himself a pretty arm-candy and maybe even someone to warm his sheets tonight. It’s been quite a while and he was just working and working and having no fun. That definitely didn’t sound like him and River felt like he needed to fix his reputation. And therefore, the fair came just in right time, opened its arms and devoured River whole, letting him walk the streets, smirk on his face, hands tucked in his pockets and his eyes scanning the are for the one.

It was almost a rule that River never picked up the same girl twice. And goddamn, some of them would be worth it. But it only created bad blood, taking them out repeatedly. Then they started to have ideas and those River really wasn’t fan of. Once. He made that mistake once. Took a girl out two nights in a row and a week later, he even called her. The gal started to fill her head with fabulated ideas that he wanted to date her and surely enough, River had to work thrice as hard to get rid of her. And not that he never got slapped for his bullshit but that girl threw an incredible tantrum. She topped them all.

As he kept weaving through the crowds, he sent a wave here, a wink there, kept those girls hopeful. There was a lot of potential this year and it seemed that River was going to face the toughest choice. Who to take home tonight? Maybe Jonah was somewhere in the crowd. That guy was a true wingman, real MVP when it came to girls. And the two always scored high when “hunting” together. But River was lazy to call him, relying on the fact that the bartender was somewhere in the crowd.

A familiar flash of platinum blonde attracted his attention soon though and that shit-eating grin on his face only grew. There were exactly two things River knew how to do. Pick the girls up and annoy those who never fell for his charms. And now he was about to do the latter. He was still bitter that Winter ruined his score with her pretty sister and was not going to forget that any time soon. This time, however, his arms wrapped around the blonde’s waist as she was standing with her back turned on him and River rested his chin on her shoulder, holding her in a tight embrace. To those who didn’t know their past, it might even look romantic. “Hope you brought your sister with you, Prudence.” River whispered in her ear, knowing very well that it wasn’t her name. But as far as he was concerned, Prudence fit her more.

Freya Wilder
Kiara
The time of the year was here again. The fair. A tradition which the Wilder family never skipped. But this year, Freya decided to do things differently. At least her senior year definitely prove that she was not that little girl anymore and hopefully, her parents finally got it. The time of preppy pink dresses and bows in her hair was over and Frey was now a completely different person. After all this time of being controlled and organized, she wanted to try and be her own person. And something was telling her she was not one of those pretty girls from picket fence homes, no matter her appearance.

A few more swishes, a touch up here and there and her face was a perfect definition of this new version of Freya Wilder. Her eyes were framed with black eyeliner and there was a flawless layer of red lipstick on her lips. A fierce lioness was staring at Freya from her vanity mirror. Yet inside, she was still nothing but a frightened cub that was barely aware of what she was doing. For now, she was trying this trial and error method and not everything went as planned. Quite the contrary. She stopped counting how many times her ideas backfired on her.

It was only a short time later that she was walking away from her house, slipping though the backdoor. She was not a little kid anymore and didn’t need her hands to be held by mommy and daddy. Besides, Cisco was waiting for her somewhere at the fair and she was already running late. Her original plan to stop at the bar and get a little liquid courage crashed, Freya had to skip it and so she headed straight towards the town square which was now filled with rides, stands with all kinds of delicious treats and there was even a petting zoo. But seeing Keaton hanging around there, Freya just decided that it was going to be for the good of everyone if she didn’t clash with him there.

A mop of blonde hair appeared in her sight and she grinned. There he was. Her brother from another mother. Freya darted towards him and jumped right on his back, wrapping her legs around his waist. “Missed me?” she giggled and kissed his cheek playfully, leaving a red smudge on his skin. “Sorry I’m late. Had to slip out before they noticed me.” Freya jumped off of Cisco’s back and grabbed his both hands. “Come on, let’s do something fun. Wanna go for a ride? Or maybe ride a llama?” Her eyebrows wiggled as she was dragging her friend deeper in the crowd and felt the adrenalin pumping in her veins.

classless act

The last thing Tatum Rowe anticipated was her aunt allowing her to visit the Storybrooke fair. In Auntie Angelina's words,
"You're an adult now, Tate. You should be able to go and have some fun!"
. However, it became apparent that she was relinquished from her house with the sole goal of receiving some of Ana's pies and pastries. Tate was beginning to think that the only reason she was allowed to be friends with Ana was because of her baking. It's doubtful she's wholly off-base, given she's the only girl who's really been her friend all these years. Well, not by choice. Not that Tatum thought anyone wanted to be her friend, but it isn't like she chose to subject herself to an adolescence of solitude. She'd be lying if she didn't hold anger towards her aunt for that move.

However, now was the time for her to make up for lost time. She was going to head into the fairgrounds and be the social butterfly she always knew she could. Finding her way towards Serana's booth, her heart rate was already starting to go up and she got dizzy. There were so many people, and she barely knew any of them. It made her feel caged, or like she was living in a dream. Walking quickly to her friend's booth, she stopped abruptly. Someone was talking to Serana. She could just barely hear what the girl, who she recognized as Rosalyn from her people-watching around town.

"Do you think you could spare a moment and walk with me?"
she asked Serana.

And that's when Tate promptly turned around and tried to not have a panic attack. Her gut reaction was to walk away, especially because she knew how her aunt would feel about her talking to other people. Part of her was afraid that her aunt was secretly in the crowd, watching her. She had a habit of telling Tate that she's always watching, and it did a terrific job of keeping her in line. Walking away, she found her way through the crowd and proceeded to rest her back on a nearby pole. From here, she could see everything. It was then that she saw River flirting with Winter. She rolled her eyes. Why can't he leave a poor girl alone? It made her nostrils flare. Men like River and Jonah made her want to smack them upside the head, as if she was their grandma. She appreciated any amount of antics and chaos, but only when the other person wanted it. Not that one can necessarily give consent to be randomly flirted with, but still. Though she supposed, perhaps she was just jealous. Anytime River or Jonah had managed to flirt with her, she always felt like she was being made fun of. Why exactly would either of them want to romance the pants off of the town's recluse?

Tatum stopped resting on the pole and started walking towards Winter and River. Something about watching River flirt with Winter made her boldness outshine the anxiety that rattled through her. She set her eyes on Winter, trying to ignore River altogether.

"Is this douche-bag bothering you?"
It didn't come out angry, at least not the type of angry she wanted. Tate sounded like she was merely looking for a reason to shit-talk River as opposed to saving Winter from his antics.

Sorry not sorry 'bout what I said

How is it that only two minutes into this damn festival, Finn is already bored? He's not normally one for things like this, but for some reason it feels like he should be there. So, he went, much as he dislikes it. Though he loves Storybrooke, he's also begun to grow bored. It's always the same people, doing the same things. Even those who are "changing" really are just the same as they've always been. Sure, they can bullshit themselves into thinking they are becoming better people, but Finn doesn't. See, the young man is aware that he's an ass. He doesn't want to be, he just feels as if something is missing from his life, so he goes from person to person trying to figure out what it is.

Speaking of people, his friend River looks as if he's in trouble. Oh well. That boy is even worse than Finn himself, so it'll be quite entertaining to see what he got himself into this time. Sure, Finn could technically go help him, but why would he? This is much more fun. Besides, it's not as if those girls will genuinely hurt Jonah, physically or otherwise. So, he'll just watch to see how his friend will get himself out of this situation. If only Finn had some popcorn, or maybe a strong drink to go along with this show.

Oliver isn't usually one for festivals, but it certainly is beautiful to see so many people bustling happily around the town. String lights adorn the streetlights of Storybrooke, small well-decorated stalls lining the cobbled roads. Maybe he'll stop and buy some cotton candy? He knows Serana is around here somewhere, maybe he should stop by and give her a hand...

It only takes Oliver a few minutes to awkwardly skirt through the thick crowd and find the small, delicious-smelling bakery stand. Oliver gives Serana a wide grin, waving enthusiastically. "My goodness, Serana, you've outdone yourself." He can't help but laugh happily at the elegant spread. "I don't know how I'll ever pick..." Ollie jokes, before digging through his trusty messenger bag to produce a thick, leather-bound book titled 'The Drunken Botanist'.

He brandishes it to her before setting it carefully on the table, preening proudly over his find. "Here, I dug this up from the back of my Botany shelf the other day - I annotated some of the chapters I think you'll enjoy. And uhm, if you have time, can I get a couple pies to take back to the school?" It's then that Oliver produces his old, beaten up leather wallet, looking a bit sheepish as he passes her a handful-too-many bills. "Keep the extra for yourself. Rainy day fund." It's hard not to tip his best friend - he can hardly imagine how hard she worked to produce all of this.

"Here's your fuckin' freak candy." Bianca grumbles to Helios, fishing a packet of spicy lemon sweets from her bag and tossing them swiftly to him as she exits the quaint corner store. In the same movement, she's fishing a pack of cigarillos out of the paper, lighting it swiftly with her lucky red lighter and taking a long drag. Fuck. The sweet buzz of nicotine settles over her senses, washing away some of the buzzing anxiety that's been flooding her brain. The annual festival is this week and the town hasn't known peace since - even from where they're standing Bianca can see the large, shifting crowd. She's not one to smoke all of the time, but at times of the year where it's crowded and chaotic, she prefers to keep her distance and keep something on-hand to help her anxiety. Maybe she could stomach that sort of crowd in a bar when she's shitfaced, but not in a festival full of crying babies. Fuck no.

Exhaling a small cloud of smoke through her nose, she smirks and glances over at Helios, her shoulders sinking a fraction. "What are we climbin' today, parkour boy?" She bites her tongue and lets out a laugh, knowing full well that every event is much more fun with Helios around. When they're together, they're always up to no good. It's the fucking best. "I've been working out my arms even more than usual so you can show me someplace cool. Don't let me down, Leo." There's no bite behind it, just an easy playfulness that is familiar to their dynamic.

Felix "Doc" Labeau

I got hoodoo, I got voodoo, I got things I ain't even tried!

Well boys... seems like things are going as they should...

Doc meandered around the festival grounds, taking in the sights, the smells, and the people. Especially the people. He knew people always love a good show, and he planned to give 'em one. Part of the planned festivities was a "magic show", run by yours truly. It took longer than he cared to admit to convince the Mayor, but she eventually caved.

They always do, in time.

He was sure to pleasantly greet those whom he passed that he already knew, reminding all of his performance tonight. They must have already known - it was advertised in all the flyers, and he even splurged to have banners placed throughout the grounds to ensure no one would miss the news. The moment he'd been waiting for was finally here - the moment for his plan to be set in motion. He felt confident that he had properly kept his identity under wraps from the Mayor - no way in hell did she know what he was up to. She may be suspecting something, but...

Not this.

He couldn't hide his grin. In time, the citizens of Storybrooke would "wake up". Remember who they really were, much to the chagrin of the Mayor. And be under his control.

All in good time.

The gym 'Chad's Chamber of Chiselled Champions' was full of movement as usual. Even on the first day of the fair Chad's devoted members wouldn't dream of missing a day of working out. Chadwick remembered the speech he had given just yesterday.

"Now everyone remember. There's going to be temptation tomorrow. Temptation that only comes around once a year. And you have to ask yourself a question. Do you want to go be a lazy slob and destroy all the progress you've made in your time here?" A resounding no went through the crowd that had just finished their workout. "Exactly. I'll know if you eat those sweets. I'll see it in your eyes." He paused to look into the eyes of every single person there before continuing. "Now that said during the festival we're only going to have half days. You can still go and have fun just don't eat all that crap."

While he was reminiscing he realized that the clock had hit 1:50. He clapped his hands and called out to everyone in his obnoxiously loud voice. "Alright everyone great work today! Go have fun at the festival or whatever it is you want to do. Remember we're still here tomorrow." Despite being an attention loving workout junkie, Chad really did care about his clientele. That's why he was so popular. It wasn't uncommon for him to individually work with every single person throughout the day. The progress everyone made was all the advertising he needed for people to come to his gym.

As people were filtering out Chadwick looked at his reflection in one of the mirrors. "Damn I look good." He spoke to himself. Then he started flexing. No one loved Chad's physique more than the man himself. He loved watching the way his muscles rippled and did several poses before a voice called out to him. "Lord Chad?" The name caused him to snap out of his flex session and look towards the girl who had called out to him. "Stephanie how many times do I have to tell you not to call me that?" "At least one more time Lord Chad." His secretary was a good worker but she was obsessed with him. Not that Chad could blame her, I mean, look at him. But it was still annoying. "What is it?" "I was just wondering if you wanted to go to the festival together." "Stephanie you know I don't date coworkers." "I'll quit!"

The argument went on for longer before Chad finally made it out of the gym. It was like that every day with her. Chad made his way to the festival while saying hi to those that called out to him. It was hard being this amazing sometimes. Who was he kidding, Chad loved all the attention. Towering over everyone else had it's benefits. He could see all the stalls and was looking for anyone he knew to talk with. He finally spotted someone he knew and made a beeline straight for them, pushing people out of his way without a care in the world.

"Well well what do we have here? A nerd stall? I didn't know they would have those this year." Chad's voice was loud as always even in the crowd of people. As he had just come from the gym he was still wearing some athletic shorts and a muscle shirt and definitely stood out. "Rosalyn it's so good to see you. And not with a book in your hands! You look even more beautiful than ever I swear." He closed the distance between him and the small crowd of people at the pastry stand. "And Serena! Good to see you as well even if you are contributing to the obesity epidemic in this country. That reminds me when are you going to come by my gym? Standing offer. And of course you too Rosalyn. You should walk around with me! Make all the other girls jealous." He winked at Rosalyn and was making a pointed effort to completely ignore Oliver other than having called him a nerd moments ago.

_______________________

Not for the first time since first arriving at the town, James wondered if it had been a reckless decision to move to the States right in the middle of summer. Being used to British summers which were far more temperate, he found his first impressions of the comparatively less forgiving mid-July heat in Storybrooke somewhat overwhelming. The crumpled, short-sleeved linen shirt he was wearing was one of only two such summer clothes he owned, and he had realised with only a cursory glance at the weather forecast that he would probably need more if he was going to survive the relentless temperature. He added 'suitable summer clothes - not too expensive' to his ever-growing mental list of things he needed to sort out as part of getting up and running with this new and sudden relocation to Storybrooke.

Things had moved very quickly since he had made the decision to move overseas just over a month ago. Although he liked to think he was fairly tidy, to call himself a well-organised individual would be a stretch by his own admission, and so had expected the move to be a fairly long and complicated process. However, it had been almost surreal in how smoothly things had all went. A faculty position at the local university which had almost been offered up to him on a plate, admittedly with the unusual commitment to taking over headship of the night classes programme. A house on sale for pennies' worth, more than covered by selling his current house in London (possibly the only time he had ever been grateful for the astronomical price of London real estate). All documents, from visas to insurance, being fast-tracked at a pace unimaginable to anyone who had experienced the mire of modern bureaucracy. It was almost as if the sequence of events were lining up in a specific way that would get James Piper-Davies at Storybrooke as soon as possible.

The only slight anomaly in the journey had been his unexpected travelling companion. James closed his eyes in embarrassment as the painful clarity of retrospect allowed him to see how inappropriate the whole situation had been. A grown man travelling with a teenage girl to whom he bore no relation - he had no idea where his better judgment had gone for him to allow such a thing. Perhaps he'd just seen too many American movies with people hitchhiking all over the place and thought that was just what people did on this side of the pond. Or maybe it was because in that Dominica girl he'd seen a glimpse of another nineteen-year-old girl who was on her own and in need of a helping hand.

A helping hand, huh...

James had sent most of his belongings ahead of him to the new house before leaving London himself, and he had spent the past few days unpacking after they had arrived on Monday. The first two things he had unpacked currently stood on an otherwise bare mantlepiece on the other side of the living room. James' gaze lingered on the two simple photo frames that were placed carefully above the fireplace. One was a picture of his late wife Mary, taken on a beautiful autumn day with her hair dishevelled by the October breeze, awkward and perfect. The other was of Arianna, the whole reason he was here at all - the nineteen-year-old stepdaughter he had never known he had, who was on her own and insistent she would take no helping hand from him.

He sighed, wishing he had something more to go on than a high school yearbook picture and a short cryptic letter that had kicked off the whole chain of events that led to his being here in the first place. So much time that had gone by without anyone to watch her steps, or to comfort her when times got hard, or hold her hand when she struggled to stand. It was no wonder that she would have nothing to do with a complete stranger claiming to be her parent now. It felt like he was building a causeway on a seashore with no other side in sight - he didn't know what else to do except to keep laying down stones hoping that he'd reach that lost, unfriendly island before he drowned.

Or before I die from getting shot down repeatedly, he thought glumly as he recalled the catastrophe that was his previous interaction with his stepdaughter. She obviously hadn't wasted the past nineteen years in sharpening up her words against unwanted guests. That made him wilt a little bit more.

I'm an unwanted guest. No, forget that, I don't even make the cut for 'guest' - I'm just straight-up unwanted. Admittedly, it's nothing new for a schoolteacher, but turns out it cuts harder when it's your own children... what do you know, Tim from Physics was actually right.

With one last wistful glance at the two photos, he picked up his keys from the bowl by the door and left his thoughts in the empty house behind him.

As he stepped outside, James squinted against the bright afternoon sunlight that blazed cheerfully above as if delighting in his inexperience with the midsummer heat. He briefly considered taking the car after all with its promise of air conditioning, but decided that he needed the exercise so he instead grabbed his bike and helmet from the garage and began cycling into town. The route was mainly flat all the way so James was able to enjoy the thankfully cool breeze that swept past his cheeks as he sped down the roads, making it to the university campus in good time. After chaining up his bike near his office, he walked the short distance to the town centre and his true destination - the Storybrooke Founding Festival.

Even without the issue of Arianna, there was something which drew him to this particular town in the States which he couldn't quite place. Even though it was established enough to host a university, he could find very few resources. The university itself had no notable alumni, at least none whose work he could track down. They seemed to be almost exclusively local in their fame and influence, and there wasn't much news about Storybrooke from beyond the town itself. In fact, at least on paper, the whole town at a glance seemed to be socially, culturally and economically self-reliant - if the world outside disappeared, Storybrooke would neither change nor care. The historian in him found the whole thing rather intriguing, and so upon hearing of a founders' festival, he decided that it wouldn't be remiss to do a spot of field work to find out a bit more about his new home.

And he heard that there was a stall by his favourite bakery which made just about the best fruit cake he'd ever had.

When he arrived, the lunch rush appeared to be in its latter stage and many festival goers had eased up on the food vendors, having finished their meals (With a fair few of them having missed the rubbish bin, James noted distastefully as he put an empty drinks can into the trash) to return to the entertainment stands and displays. There was, however, at least one food stall which appeared to remain popular, and as he caught sight of both a familiar sign and a familiar scent, another sigh escaped him. Just his luck that the one food stall with the massive queue (if that crowd could be called a queue) was Cotton Cakery. Rather than join the squabble for the poor vendor's attention, James stood a little ways back with his wallet in hand so that she knew that he wanted to buy something. Speaking of familiar things, the vendor herself was a regular face behind the counter. What was her name... Sarah? Celia?

Mary laughed at her husband. 'How can a history teacher be so bad at remembering names?'

James' lip tightened, and suddenly he wished he was elsewhere.

Karina was late for work. Again.

Normally, this wouldn't have been as much of a problem, especially since her boss at this point was used to her antics and just made her stay later to make up the time. But today was a festival day, so she was more likely than not to be lectured for not being more responsible. It wasn't her fault she was always so tired!!!

Her latest dream of her prince flew from her mind as she hastily got dressed and nearly fell down the stairs on her way out the door. Perfect of her parents to go enjoy the festivities without her and not think to wake her up, but then, it was nearly impossible to wake her up once she was asleep. She was going to have to find a better solution for that.

The festival was, of course, in full swing when she got there, but hopefully not much had happened that she needed to worry about. It didn't take her long to locate the bar that was set up especially for this occasion. When she reached it, she was practically out of breath, wheezing and trying to regain oxygen. "I'm here! I'm here..." she gasped, doubling over as she struggled to breathe. "I didn't miss anything, did I?"

She looked up, leaning against the bar and sliding off her hat to survey the crowd. Hopefully she'd have time to go looking for her prince before the night was over...

A fine day. Leo scanned the area in front of him, arms crossed as he waited for Bi to finalize her purchases. He was surprised to find himself here, every other time the festival has taken place, he'd be as far away from it as possible. After all, when people are at the festival, they aren't at their homes. It gave him the chance to go and explore some estates without getting bothered by muggles. Such free uncharted territory! And by "uncharted territory", he means rooftops, statues, and cars that he hasn't set foot on. Alas, exploration will have to wait.

But for now... spicy lemons. he thought as he slowly fazed back to reality.

"-uckin' freak candy," Bianca grumbled as she tossed a pack of Leo's favorite and frankly eccentric pack of spicy lemon-flavored candies. "F-wha? Freak candy? Excuse you," he retorted as he stuffed the pack into his hoodie, "If you want freakish, look in the mirror, Bi. You've got backpack straps with no backpack to speak of and a portable kids toy around your neck for when you wanna spontaneously teach a child how to put wooden shapes through holes."

Leo chuckled under his breath as he turned around, once again scanning the perimeter. Another reason why the brunet avoids the festival like the plague is the fact that the usual routes he takes to his favorite hangout spot are completely blocked by tents. It didn't make his hangout spot completely inaccessible, but his usual routes were both quick and concealed from the public's eye.

Time for Plan B, I guess.

"What are we climbing today, parkour boy? I've been working out my arms even more than usual so you can show me someplace cool. Don't let me down, Leo."

"Wouldn't dream of it. C'mon, you're more than capable to keep up," came the reply.

A smirk grew on Leo's face, knowing full well that with Bianca by his side his routes are gonna be made so much more interesting than if he went solo. The brown-headed traceur started to make his way over to an alleyway, eyeing the metal fire escapes that lined the walls. The building that constituted the left wall was two stories shorter than the one on the right. While the fire escape on the left building was most certainly intact, the fire escape on the right had nearly all of its rungs destroyed.

Nothing we can't handle.

While popping his hoodie on, Leo grabbed the first rung on the left fire escape before vaulting himself upwards, skipping almost the entire first story. Looking over his shoulder at Bianca, he flashed a gloating look from under his hood before focusing on his planned-out course once more.

Instead of climbing up and onto the fire escape's metal platform like a normal human being, Leo jumped upwards and outwards, grabbing the platform railing from the outside. From there the brunet swung in midair, gathering enough momentum before letting go as he swung backward. Doing this propelled him towards the opposite side of the alleyway, allowing him to twist mid-flight to grab onto the fire escape's metal platform on the right wall. From there, he grabbed the metal railings before hauling himself up, veins rushing with adrenaline.

Leo spun around to lean on the railing, looking down on Bianca from the platform.

"Was I a letdown for ya?" the traceur joked.

Leo reached into his hoodie to bring out the pack of sweets from earlier, ripping it open before helping himself to two delectable pieces of spicy lemon. His gaze slowly shifted from Bi to the sky overhead, calling upon his memory of the surrounding area to remind him what jumps and obstacles are next.

Leo muttered to himself with nary a hitch in his breath, "God, it's a clear sky. Tonight'll be great for stargazing. Maybe I'll invite Bi if she doesn't have a match tonight."

Y'know she's right down there. You could just ask.

Resisting the urge to facepalm at his own stupidity, he returned his gaze towards Bi before hollering, "Yo, Bi! You got a match tonight?"

"Hell yeah I'm a freak!" Bianca snorted, raising two fingers to her mouth, spreading them, and coyly flicking her tongue. "That's why I get more ladies than you, Leo!" She teased, though her smile faded as Helios proceeded to take the most complicated way up the building. Ugh, he's so goddamn extra. The best way to do this shit is to copy Helios very carefully - her forearms flex as she heaves herself up the same path, clearly with much less ease. He never makes anything easy, does he? "Shit!" She growls, feeling her stomach tense as she flings herself across the same alleyway, catching with one hand and cleanly pulling herself the rest of the way up onto the platform. Hell yeah, who says parkour is hard? Well, Bianca's muscles, that's who. Thank the gods for upper body strength.

"No letdowns here, just rightfully cocky motherfuckers." Bianca admits, leaning back against the railing and taking a few gulps of air, her muscles burning pleasantly. This is good exercise, albeit dangerous as hell. How does he do it so elegantly? Then Helios gets a pensive look on his face and asks about her schedule, and she can't help but smirk. "Nah, I'm free to do something stupid with you, if that's what you're getting at." She wipes some sweat from her brow and flops against the railing beside him, all languid limbs and drama. "Are we going higher than this? Please tell me you brought something to drink, ohmygod."

She's acting like she's annoyed but in reality, Bianca loves trying to keep up with Leo. He shines in his element like this, calm and content and happy. If she could do something to make sure that expression would never fade, she would. Ugh, sappy. Almost to get out of her head, she punches Eli on the arm. "Slow down with those stupid candies, you're gonna choke."

Arianna ♡
Weren't festivals supposed to be fun? All Arianna felt was boredom. Wrinkling her nose slightly as the sound of shrieking children filled her ears, she turned around with her iced caramel latte in her hands, her eyes immediately finding the source. There were kids everywhere, but this particular group of screamers were right behind her in the line, the two boys shoving each other as their mother stood behind them, not paying them any mind.

"And this is why I will never have children." Arianna muttered, turning back around to grab a straw. "Especially boy children." She'd just grabbed one of the straws from the container when one of the boys shoved a little too hard, knocking the other one right into her back. The latte was promptly squished between her sweater and the counter, exploding everywhere and causing her to gasp. "You little-!" Spinning on her heel, she glared down at the two sheepish looking boys before her eyes darted up to their mother.

"I hope you brought leashes for them." Arianna hissed, looking as though she wanted to say more. She ultimately decided against it though, but now she was going to make them wait longer while she waited for a replacement. Thankfully, the owner of the cart that was selling the coffees and teas had seen the whole thing, and he quickly made her another. She took it and slid out of the way, finding a table nearby to set the drink on while she removed her sweater. "Little jerks."

Folding the ruined sweater, she stared at it for a moment before she just shoved it into a nearby trash can. She might regret her decision later, but for now, she was too angry to look at it. Sliding her straw into her latte, she sipped at the caramel goodness as she started to walk around. It wasn't long before she found someone she recognized and actually wasn't opposed to seeing, and breathed a sigh in relief. "Thank god you're here. I thought I was going to be alone all day." She fell into step beside Keaton, looking over at him. "Why do you smell like a farm?"

Winter ❆
Winter, for one, was not ecstatic about being here at the festival. If it weren't for Summer begging her and begging her to go, Winter would still be at home, reading a book or doing something relaxing. Because this place, with its screaming children and loud noises? It was far from relaxing. Summer seemed to be having a blast, though, especially since this was the first day that she'd convinced her older sister to go. Summer was allowed to go on her own, since the girl was almost eighteen, but there were definitely rules in place.

Still, Winter was almost regretting her decision to come. Summer was all over the place, and Winter just needed a break. There was even a petting zoo at this blasted festival, complete with a llama and god knows what else. Summer had been talking about it since Monday, and today, Winter would get to experience it as well. Joy. Currently, her younger sister was getting her face painted, pretty snowflakes on one side and vicious flames on the other. Her imagination had no boundaries.

A small smile tugged at Winter's face as she watched the artist work, her head tilted slightly in concentration. Of course, that smile slid from her face as soon as she felt someone wrap their arms around her waist. She stiffened, feeling a chin on her shoulder and then hearing a familiar voice. Like nails on a chalkboard, grating against her senses. What he said was enough to earn him a slap across the face, but Winter didn't want to cause a scene. Instead, she kept her eyes fixed on Summer, her teeth grating in her mouth.

"You are relentless." She ground out, finally reaching down and digging her nails into his wrists so that he'd let her go and she could move away from him. "And not in a good way, River." She turned to look at him, fire dancing in her eyes as she stared at him. "Don't you have someone else to-" Before she could finish her question, she heard someone else's voice, and turned her head a fraction to see Tate. Her jaw clenched slightly, though not from Tate or her question, but from River's presence. "He would like to think so, but he's just a dead fish in a pond." She shot a glare at River, crossing her arms. "Now, run along, dead fish."

Jonah ♕
Hoisting the heavy box onto his shoulder, Jonah stepped back from the door to his old Chevy Impala, lifting his leg to kick the already dented door shut. He stared at the dent for a second, wondering if he'd seen it before, though the thought didn't last long. He was sure he had, and he was pretty sure he was the one who'd caused it. Turning away from his vehicle, he left the little makeshift parking lot and headed for the stand that belonged to his bar for the festival. Well, technically it was far from his bar, but he could keep that thought to himself.

"Alright, your prince charming is here to save the day." He grinned at the girl behind the little counter as he approached, who promptly rolled her eyes and pushed herself off of it. Muttering something about in his dreams, she tossed the keys on the counter and promptly left, her shift considered done for the day. Jonah could have been here earlier (admittedly: on time) but he'd woken up late after some late night fun. He whistled under his breath as he relived the night in his mind, reaching for liquor bottles from the box he'd brought with him to throw them in the cooler.

He'd only been there a few minutes when he heard a girl's voice, quite out of breath. Popping his head back over the counter, he straightened and grinned at Karina. "Late again, Karina?" She wasn't looking at him, but surveying the festival crowd, and he let his eyes wander over the crowd as well. Searching for new prospects? Probably. Last night was definitely not the one, though she'd been fun. He was a little like his friend River in that regard-- once he knew someone wasn't his perfect match, he tried to move on. Granted, he wasn't as good as River at it, but hey. No one's perfect.

He was mostly teasing Karina about being late, considering he hadn't been on time himself. He returned to his task, dropping the lid on the cooler as he set the last bottle inside. There were shelves behind him that showed what they had, and he turned to study it. He turned back to the cooler, popping it back open to do a double check on what was inside, making sure everything he needed was there. If worse came to worse, he could go grab more, though leaving Karina in charge might not be a great idea. Maybe he'd find River and send him-- no, that was an even dumber idea. Well, if they were out, they were out. "Any luck finding your prince, Karina?"

Alexei ☾
Alexei slid the wad of money into his pocket, glancing up at the man across from him. "Payment accepted." Holding out his hand, Alex grinned as the other man hesitated before shaking his hand in return. He dropped Alex's hand pretty quickly, looking around as though someone were going to see them in the alley they were in. Resisting the urge to roll his eyes, Alex just waved him off, watching with disinterest as the man practically scampered away, almost like a scared bunny. Pulling the money back out of his pocket, he counted it again, even though he had just done so.

"This. This is what life's all about." He grinned as he came up with the correct number, folding the bills and sliding them back into his pocket. He always counted the money in front of his clients as well, so he knew they weren't trying to stiff him. Hell, they were lucky he didn't carry around one of those counterfeit pens to ensure the bills were real. He'd been burned before, but alas, that was just the price of business like this. But honestly, as long as he had his lucky coin with him, he wasn't fretting. Everything had gone so right for him ever since finding that coin, and he wasn't about to start doubting it now.

He left the alley well after the scared bunny man did, glancing in the direction of the festival. He hadn't planned on attending, not really, but the job he'd just been paid for was finished, and he didn't have much else on his hands at the moment. With a light shrug, he headed in that direction. Though the festival was mostly taking place in the center of the town, the cheer and some of the products had spread out throughout the entirety of Storybrooke. He smiled and waved as people as he went by, though most didn't bother to return the favor. His reputation preceded him, as usual.

Shaking his head, he just sighed and kept walking, though it wasn't a sad sigh. He was used to the silent treatment. Sliding his hands into his pockets, he continued walking until he saw some familiar faces. With a grin lighting up his face, he approached the three of them, looking at the pissed off look on Winter's face, the intrigued yet slightly annoyed face on the other girls, and the amused one on River's. "Yeesh. We've got the full spectrum here, don't we?" He looked at the girls again. "If this guy's being an ass... well, I can't really say much. Tigers don't change their spots, or some shit like that." He laughed a little at his own words, giving River a slight nod.

How are you feeling?
Happy
What are you wearing?
Where are you?
The food booth
Did you mention anyone?
Talks crap about Alexei ( apolla apolla )for a second
Who are you talking to?
Oliver and Rosalyn
And, like, tagging?
As soon as Ana saw her friend begin to approach, she pulls out a blueberry scone and pours some warm icing over top. Smiling brightly, she gives Rosalyn a squeeze in response as she speaks. Serana has always been drawn to the nerdy and Rosalyn was no exception. The two are incredibly close and honestly, she can't imagine a life without their lovely conversation. "Hey hon" She smiles, while adjusting the pastries so they are perfectly spaced out once again. Everything must be perfect, as always. Most would think that a baker would be unable to strive for perfection in their craft, but that's simply not true. Sure, no two baked goods will ever look exactly the same, but that's the entire point. Some may look better than others, but they should always be the first temperature, have just the right amount of sugar, etc. Baking is a science, so perfection lives in the ingredients.

Aw, Rosie wants to hang out. How sweet. Unfortunately, the situation quickly turns bitter as Ana realizes she just sent her only staff member off. So, she can't go on an adventure with her bookish friend. Leaving the booth unattended for any amount of time would drive down the profits for charity, as well as the fact that someone could steal things. Sure, it's a small town but that...hooligan Alexei is probably in the area. Also, two new people have apparently been spotted in town. Sure, Ana is optimistic and wants to think the best of everyone, but she's learned by experience that trusting everyone she wants to just gets her into trouble.

"Sorry, I can't leave the booth just yet. I promise I'll come find you when I can" She squeezes her friends hand as she hands the dessert to Rosalyn. Her attention is quickly drawn away however, when her other friend, Oliver approaches, brandishing a new book. Her smile mirrors his own as he tells her its name. Normally, Ana doesn't get that excited over books, but she takes interest in anything her friends do. So, she's sure to wipe her hands off properly before picking it up. "Thank you Ollie" She smiles, setting it with her things.

At his request, she looks over her pie collection. Which ones would everyone appreciate. Apple, of course. Now, her signature is a perfect banoffe pie, with a biscuit base and chocolate topping. And, a cherry pie is required. Perfect!

With a sigh, she takes her friends money. She knows she won't get anywhere by protesting, so she'll simply surprise him with sweets at work later. "Do you want to pick them up before you leave today?" She asks him, knowing carrying a pie around the fair would just make any whip cream topping get runny.

"Tch, of course, you get more ladies. I'm not even trying to get them in the first place! They'll only slow me down when I'm running about." he yelled in reply. Helios watched with a familiar feeling of respect as his friend mirrored his pathing flawlessly. Even after countless times of her tagging along on his parkour excursions, he'd still watch his friend mirror his courses in pride. Even if she was struggling, she certainly masked it well. At least, until she pulled herself up next to Leo.

"No letdowns here, just rightfully cocky motherfuckers," Bianca rasps as she leans against the railing.

"Cocky? You got that right. You're in my territory," the traceur gloated. It wasn't like him to gloat so much, but he really felt unequal compared to his friend. Sure, he can parkour. But so can she. On the other hand, she can wrestle and fight. But Leo? He wouldn't last a single round. For a second, Leo got lost in thought, surrounded by self-deprecating thoughts and the scent of spicy lemon. Fortunately, he didn't dissociate for too long as a firm punch brought him back to reality.

"Slow down with those stupid candies, you're gonna choke."

Realizing that he was being talked to, he frantically rushed to produce a reply, "O-oh, yeah. Okay. I'll keep that in mind." Mentally cursing himself for the insanely out-of-character response, he masked his mess-up by rolling his eyes and punching her back. He knew no amount of his strength could hurt Bianca, but he did it anyway. "For your information, they're not stupid. Try one, it knocks me awake when I'm doing my courses," he said as he tossed a sucker to her. "About the drink... I mean, unless you want to chill on a rinky-dink fire escape that is in desperate need of repair," he said as he jumped in place, causing the entire structure to wobble violently, "then yes, we are going higher." Having proved his point quite sufficiently, a mischievous grin appeared on his face as he gnawed on the spicy lemon drops in his mouth.

Shifting his gaze upwards once more, Leo shoved the candy pack into his pockets and lept atop the metal railings he was holding onto just a second ago, before vaulting upwards once again. From there he grabbed onto the fire escape above and hauled himself up. Right as he was about to bound upwards again, an unknown voice screamed from somewhere behind him.

"HEY!"

Leo's head swiveled around, scanning the wall behind him to pinpoint the location of the voice.

"IT'S THE SPIDERMAN WANNABE, HE'S BACK!" it screamed one more time.

Oh god. Why now of all times?

Helios locked eyes with Bianca and mouthed an apology, before vaulting upwards once more, just in time to dodge a tin of canned tomatoes. He knew exactly what was going to happen next, and he wasn't going to stick around to be in the midst of it. You see, one of the downsides of having freeform parkour as a hobby is that people don't appreciate you climbing all over their windows, balconies, as well as being a general nuisance. And since Helios often parkours at night, the amount of sleeping people he has ticked off has probably reached triple digits.

More pantry items were chucked his way, each whiffing by a mile before reaching their peak and arcing down. Thank goodness for their horrible aim. "Bi! Might wanna pick up the pace lest you get pelted by various foodstuffs! You might even be so lucky as to get hit by Monday leftovers!" Helios yelled from above as he sprung up the last fire escape platform before pulling himself up onto the roof. Immediately the brunet turned around, leaned over the edge, and pulled out his candy pack, anxious to see what stunt his wrestler friend would pull off.

A new girl with red hair catches Nat's attention, especially as she approaches the area. There is very rarely new people in Storybrooke, in fact she's not sure that there ever has been. But now, someone new has arrived to save the town from it's boredom. Of course, this new girl will also save the town from other things, but Nat doesn't know that. The situation is made even more interesting when the girl speaks. Hmm, so she isn't a complete asshole.

Natasha chuckles at the girl, deciding that the llama is too ugly to pet anymore. He's rather frightening, the nasty little thing. Besides, she's sure she saw that weird guy, Keaton talking to it earlier. She wants nothing to do with that boy. However, she still smiles at the new girl.
"Yeah, neither have I"
She smiles, noticing the blond girl approaching the two.

"Go ahead, we don't own him"
Natasha responds to Bridgette's question with an amused look. Oh, what life would be like if she had to ask permission before doing something. How boring that would be. Adventures are the most satisfying part of life. Sure, in this life those adventures consist of climbing a tree or walking around in the woods, but she'll take what she can get.

She turns to the red-headed girl with a bright smile
"You are new around town, aren't you? I'm Natasha and this is Bridgette"
She leans in slightly, lowering her voice
"Just a warning, you are going to want to avoid most guys around here. Most of them are assholes"
