Oliver is kind, caring, charming and romantic. For a man deep in the centre of the dangerous gangland scene, he's surprisingly generous and helpful towards his friends and neutral parties. But those who know him well enough know not to get too comfortable with his friendly persona. Oliver has a temper within him that can rear its head when he's provoked enough. He can take so many insults or taunts before his aggression takes over, and often he'll pass up on using his gun if he can cause harm with his own fists.

Oliver's family have been part of illegal activity for most of his life, but for many years he seemed to reject any of the illegal businesses his loved ones were part of. He found honest work as a butcher's apprentice. Charles, his employer, saw a hardworking young man who was fighting to stay honest and also saw a "kid" struggling to hold back his aggression. Charles took Oliver under his wing, even spending time teaching him to fix cars. When Charles was gunned down by a rival of the Murphy's, Oliver's rage was triggered and the young man chased the shooter down before beating the man to death.
With no witnesses to his crime, Oliver only had his own conscience to battle with. Given how much he cared for Charles, it wasn't much of a battle and Oliver soon accepted what he'd done - he knew he'd do it again if he had to. The deceased butcher had left his business to Oliver and he has kept it going ever since. Killing the man seemed to wake something up inside of Oliver and he grew to embrace his family's criminal activities. Although he mostly keeps the butcher business legitimate, he has been known to conduct illegal transactions right there.
When the war came, his brothers were drafted in to fight on the front lines. Due to his skills, Oliver was assigned to various army bases, where he had to repair and service military vehicles, as well as building weapons and ammunition. With any leave he had, he would go home to see his aunt and check on his businesses.
Despite the honest persona Oliver presents, he has had a number of run-ins with the Police Captain, Arthur Wells, who seems desperate to get the "less threatening" Murphy on a charge.
