reusing this thread bc i don't want to clutter up the board more with a new one,, anyway. in the hidden scroll over the image i want the text to be centered, but it's off to the right instead? i'm probably overlooking something really obvious, but i can't figure out what the problem is.

Code:

Hi!! Other coders correct me if I’m wrong—but I believe you can adjust the name by adding commands like “margin-left: -10px;” and “margin-top: -30px;” (the numbers are interchangable!!

I'm used to much simpler BBCode from other sites and also have a (very) basic understanding of some HTML/CSS which has been helpful, but this is my first time trying to code something on RPN so I'm still figuring things out here ^^'' There are a few things I'm trying to figure out at the moment for a code I'm working on.

1. How would I get the quote/title ("Carmen Dei") to sit directly under the second/smaller image on the right? (And then the "Misc." box below that?)

2. Why are those 3 sections (picture, title, and "Misc.") so far to the left? They're overlapping with the "Biography" box and the decorative one with the circles in it a bit? Rather than just sitting next to them. How do I make them.. not do that?

3. How do you make a hidden scroll box on top of an image? For whatever reason, I can't seem to figure it out without completely screwing up the code. Here's an example of what I want, because I'm not really sure how to describe it in words aha. I've already tried looking at the code I linked but I still can't seem to figure it out ^^'' I want this on the larger image on the left (and maybe also the other image? I haven't decided on that part yet).

Screenshot below, and code in the spoiler below that!

hi hi!
i'll be addressing everything in order but do let me know if there's anything you don't understand!

1. from what i can tell, all of your items are next to each other based on float:left on a row system. easiest way for you to ensure that all three are in the same column would be to make another border to contain them in the same column! from what i can tell, your misc and name boxes are following the top of the personality box!

2. i can't seem to figure out why there's an overlap, since it's been sometime since i used the float:left work-around and i'm not really an expert on css, just some clown who self-taught bbcode years ago |・ω・) but if you're doing what i mentioned in point 1, adding a float:right instead of a float:left will automatically have it go to extreme right of the available space. after that it'll just be a matter of shaving down width if need to i think!

3. for scrolls on images, i'll just explain how i do it!.
- make your hidden scroll, with the image set as the background of the overflow:hidden container (that has full width and height that you want for the final image)
- not sure how you prefer doing scrolls, but make sure you have a separate container for your text for this. usually with the 3-border method of hidden scrolls you will already have 3, the text container refers to the final one. if you're doing 2-border, make an extra one with height:auto and width:100% to enclose all text!

(to hide the text)
- make a border that's the height of the scroll container above your text container to act as a placeholder so no content is seen until scroll
[or]
- the final border of the scroll (the text container) must have a margin-top: [value] with a value corresponding to the height of the scroll container, so that all content will only appear if scrolled!

low fidelity did a few extra steps, i believe to achieve a slightly transparent image as the background:
- set a position:relative to the container of the scroll (no picture)
- create a static background and have it lie at the very bottom with z-index. she used position:relative but i recommend position:absolute so you don't have to do extra shifting of the others.
- code a hidden scroll in a position:relative border with z-index above the static background

sorry if these explanations aren't the best, but i hope it helps!

edit: kio.exe is correct in that you could also shift the right-most boxes with margin instead as well, though i am personally mathhater89 and don't really use margin except for really minor adjustments or work-arounds! since i work w percentages and hate figuring out the necessary pixel numbers. whichever is easier for you!

Kio.exe Kio.exe Uxie Uxie Thank you both!! I managed to get everything to sit where I wanted and found a way to work around the overlapping (it was mostly due to the padding, just had to mess around with the numbers there until it looked right.) I was also able to figure out how to do the scroll over just the image, however I'm still struggling to understand the extra steps needed to set a slightly transparent color as the background instead? ^^''

I also have another question for anyone who may be able to answer! How would I make text message style boxes, to put inside a hidden scroll over the other image?

I also have another question for anyone who may be able to answer! How would I make text message style boxes, to put inside a hidden scroll over the other image?

buckle up for a long message ;w;

two ways to do a slightly transparent background!

the first is super easy but allows only for colours, which is just setting your colours in rgb format rather than hex. every hex colour has a corresponding rgb, which you can usually find easily if you look up a colour wheel. rgb follows rgb(0, 0, 0), but adding an extra value that is between 1 and 0 after the last colour value can dictate opacity, i.e. rgb(255, 255, 255, 0.8) would be a white border with opacity:0.8 / 80%! that said, there's some issues with compatibility across certain devices and browsers that may result in this method looking a little odd on their ends

the second way is a work-around which makes use of position and z-index and allows for both colours and images! crash course on these two (absolute and relative), the most basic thing you have to remember is that position:absolute will listen/adhere to the closest position:relative border that it is within. you can treat it like a caged dog, and without a position:relative cage, the position:absolute border will go where it pleases.
so with these in mind, you'd want to stick a position:relative on the border that you want the slightly transparent background to be on! in this case, let's just take this random box:

[border=transparent; height:100px; width:100px; padding:0; background:red;][/border]

so i'd slap a position:relative on that box's border, and then have a position:absolute element within that has height:100%; and width:100%;, to ensure that it'll cover the full element!

[border=transparent; height:100px; width:100px; padding:0; background:red; position:relative;][border=transparent; height:100%; width:100%; padding:0; position:absolute; top:0; left:0; background:#fff; opacity:0.6;][/border][/border]

note: when using position:absolute, make sure you dictate top: and left: values! these are super important for the code to look okay across devices! both must be there, even if they'll both be 0!!!! you can also use bottom or right, depending on where you want your element!

finally, when adding content into this, you put all your content into one border and then slap a position:relative on that too! this is solely so you can set its z-index to a value higher than that of the background so that it's seen! if the order of your borders are 1. big container 2. background 3. content, you need not set a z-index on the background element but i recommend you do anyways, just 2 be safe!

[border=transparent; height:100px; width:100px; padding:0; background:red; position:relative;][comment]
----background-----
[/comment][border=transparent; height:100%; width:100%; padding:0; position:absolute; top:0; left:0; z-index:1; background:#fff; opacity:0.6;][/border][comment]
----content!----
[/comment][border=transparent; height:auto; width:100%; padding:0; position:relative; z-index:2; color: #000;]some text here[/border][/border]

some text here

these methods are also super helpful when you want elements on a transparent background without having the text/elements itself be transparent too to ensure readability!

as for text messages, it really depends on what kind of style you're going for! since text messages are in a column, you can usually just do two borders for each row of messages, one container that takes up the entire width of the container and one that contains the actual message! here's an example:

Code:
[border=transparent; height:150px; width:150px; padding:10px; box-sizing:border-box; border:1px solid black;][comment]
----message row container----
[/comment][border=transparent; height:auto; width:100%; padding:0;][comment]
----actual message----
[/comment][border=transparent; height:fit-content; width:fit-content; padding:5px; box-sizing:border-box;
/*to get one edge not-curved for the message look */ border-radius:8px 8px 0 8px; background:blue; color: #000;

/*to ensure the message is on the right*/ margin-left:auto;]what's up![/border][/border][comment]
----message row container 2----
[/comment][border=transparent; height:auto; width:100%; padding:0;][comment]
----actual message (reply!)----
[/comment][border=transparent; height:fit-content; width:fit-content; padding:5px; box-sizing:border-box;
/*to get one edge not-curved for the message look. swap the numbers around to change the edge corner */ border-radius:8px 8px 8px 0; background:green; color: #000;
/*to ensure the message is on the left*/ margin-right:auto;]not much[/border][/border]
[/border]

what's up!
not much

you'd probably want to insert a few margins between each message, but the basic idea is there! inserting this into your scrolls are simple, just put the message row container + messages into the text container on your hidden scrolls (*・ω・)ノ

hope this helps!

Uxie Uxie Thank you for all the help!! One last problem, then I think I should have everything figured out for now ^^'' I managed to get the semi-transparent background over the image, but I can't get it to scroll along with the text? Currently it's static, permanently overlaying the image. I feel like this is probably a really easy fix, but I've been trying for quite a while and can't get it to work

i'm assuming you mean that you want the semi-transparent background to cover the container of the text!

just apply the same principles, but make the text container your position:relative cage! you'd need another border to contain all of your text with position:relative on it, but this should ensure that it'll follow the height and width of the content rather than the scroll box!!

Uxie Uxie Thank you so so much, I really appreciate all the help! ♡

Hopefully I haven't been too annoying with all the questions (ノ ∀ \* )

not at all!!!! (´ ω `♡) it's always a pleasure helping others learn hehe
i'm glad your code turned out good and i hope to see more of your other creations soon (*¯︶¯*)

remember to set the padding to 0 if you don't want it to be the default value !! the padding was what pushed your text off center haha ~ i set the padding for you on the border tag with the text and made the necessary changes to the other values.

edit: on an unrelated note, i would recommend setting an overall background if you want to use white text, so it's readable on light mode !! otherwise, you can just remove the text color, as the default one switches appropriately depending on the mode ^^
