Nevereign (General)

"Well, that's your own fault..." Cerberus saw behind his desk in his dim lit office, listening to several voices from his speakers. The current speaker was a woman with a light Australian accent. He knew full well who it belonged to. Chloe Johnson, the CEO of Ronin, a tough nut who played soft. "You startled the nest. Kicked the kid in the nuts and now you can't help but complain to me. Your fault." He could imagine her lazily leaning back in her massive leather chair. That's how she behaved in interviews, at least. Not giving a damn how others saw her. She was good at her job, he had to give her that. No other reason she'd stay the CEO for so long. Not at a time where CEO's lasted a year at most.

"We did not expect him to react like that." A man said with a constantly surprised tone with a thick Russian accent. The branch head for MosTech. Franklin never really saw the man but it didn't matter. MosTech were like a snake pit and all closely related. "It was a message for him to stay away, not start a war."

"If you didn't want a wa', you shouldn't have attacked the kid, hm?" Chloe said, clearly satisfied with the situation. She was the one making a profit out of the situation. "I don't know what you want me to do about it."

"We simply ask for you to reject the contract he offered you. We will pay just as much. Or, if you want both our money and his, you can give him poor security and let us handle the situation in our way." The Russian said. He knew how the world worked. Money made it turn. Money turned loyalties.

"I already accepted the cash." Chloe chuckled, amused by their offer. "I intend to make the most out of this situation and if that means givin' the kid my boys and toys, so be it. I won't allow him to take the city ove' but a little competition fo' you is always great fo' me."

"We are willing to p..." The Russian paused. "We have a third." He said after hearing some whispers in Russian. "Someone is jumping on your end. Who did you bring in?" He raised his tone.

"The kid is probably piggy-backin' on my end. We gave him technological protection as well and didn't secure ourselves from that line just yet." She said calmly, not disturbed in the slightest by the revelation that they were being listened to.

"You are unprofessional. We will talk later and we will ensure the safety this time." The Russian said before cutting the transmission.

"You can't really hire me and then spy on me." Chloe sighed, more out of feeling tired than frustration, judging by the sound. "I'll let this one slide. I get it, you need information on me. Just don't do it again." She got serious for a moment before cutting the transmission again.

Franklin chuckled. "Interesting." He smirked. Even if his plan wasn't morally just before, it just got closer to it.

@Nevix

While Lazarus was loudly offering jobs in their security division to whoever was interested, they were quietly hiring local specialists. Hackers getting challenges, assassins getting shreds of paper, and some were asked for by name. Shady figures with disgusted looks on their faces and dark coats hiding their fine suits. Lazarus Corporation was responding to aggression and for that, they needed local hands. One of those was Declan McCarthy who got several messages left at all known acquaintances to show up at The Dancer when its convenient for him. 'We will wait'. All messages finished with.

@Mathias No Bias

The security giant Ronin Corporation was looking for a partner among countless smaller companies. It wasn't a move they did often but it always ended with absorbing the company which returned interest. Wasn't something which could be fought back but always ended profitable.

This time, Ronin set their sights on Bulwark. Like always, their heavily encrypted message was sent at midnight. Earlier that day, a local courier brought a simple phrase with which the message could be decrypted with much less effort. They wanted a meeting the next morning, mentioning the potential for a lucrative partnership and insisting for the meeting to be held at their Nevereign branch. Being aware that it might be interpreted as a suspicious move, Ronin pointed out their surprisingly fair and clean business dealings and just as strongly insisted that Bulwark leadership arrived with as much security as they need to feel comfortable.

Declan pinched the bridge of his nose. He actually liked Nevereign at night. The neon illuminated everything in a way that he rather liked. The light pollution didn't bother him, because he never found much that was very interesting to look at in the sky. Nevereign in the day, however, was an entirely different beast. The skies remained flat gray, but dim light now filtered through the omnipresent clouds. It was as if the sky was a sheet, and a child was on the other side, shining a flashlight through it. He liked that analogy. It implied that God was a child, and in his experience, he didn't doubt it.

He started walking, with no general direction. He figured, eventually, he'd end up in either The Dancer. He wanted to delay that for as long as he could, though. He'd only ever drank before noon once, and that had been a mistake.  Still, he knew that this street would take him to the Grisgow District. He began thinking about a question he'd asked himself last night.

Seriously, is it mortician or coroner?

He was quite engrossed in thought, so when he felt a tap on his shoulder, he actually jumped. He turned on his heel and stepped back, finding himself face-to-face with a man he'd met a few weeks ago. Declan didn't know his real name, but everyone called him "The Weasel". Supposedly, it was because he could wriggle into and out of any situation, like a weasel. However, Declan figured it was just because he was tiny and rat-faced.

"Yo, Deck." He said.

"Jesus H. Christ, Weasel." Declan  said, lowering his hands. "You scared the shit out of me."

"Not my fault you startle so easily."

"Shove off." He said. "So what's the word, Weezy?"

"'Weezy?'"

"I was trying something new."

"Well, how about you never say that again?"

"How about you tell me what you need?"

"Whatever." Weasel said, rolling his eyes. "Some rich-ass suit types came looking for you. I dunno what they want, but they told me, to tell you, that you're wanted at The Dancer."

"The Dancer?" Declan said, cocking an eyebrow. "What do they look like."

"Shit, dude, you think I remember?" Weasel asked, chuckling. "Just get down there. I'm sure these guys will find you ."

He threw open the doors to The Dancer feeling like a bit of a hotshot. People in suits looking for him meant that either he was wanted for a job, or wanted dead. That was a possibility. He'd been quite the Anti-Corporation activist when he was younger. He'd been a part of the Anti-Corp IRA, before INS had stamped them out. Then again, that had been a while ago, under a different name. If these folks were looking to kill him, it was more likely they'd be from one of the gangs.

He looked around, but found no one who was obviously looking for him. He took a seat at the bar, and ordered a soda. If the Bartender from last night had been here, with his free drink, he might have gotten some booze. Alcohol was too expensive to buy when he could get it for free, and besides, it was still early.

"Right." He said, scratching his head. "Get in, hack the turrets, cut the power." He smiled. "That's some shady shit, but it's easy." He stood, grabbing the bag. "I wonder, Sharky, does your boss treat all of his bitches this well? Because I'm starting to feel downright pampered." He obviously wasn't expecting an answer, since he started walking towards the door. "See you soon, Sharky. Then, a few years later, we'll see each other in Hell." He crossed himself, swiveling around just as he backed out the door. "The thought of that particular reunion almost makes me want to find Jesus." Then, the door closed, and he was gone.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Declan had, perhaps, never been known for his well-developed conscience, or his profound musing on ethics and morals, but something felt wrong about this. If he was clearing the target lists on the turrets, wouldn't they fire on the employees? Or, would that just allow Sharkface's allies into the building unharmed? Furthermore, Sharkface scared him. She wasn't the type that one sent on subtle missions, where non-lethality was needed. Declan had killed a few people before, seven or eight. Four had been in self-defense, and the other three, well, they had it coming. He didn't feel good about it, certainly, and he wished he hadn't been the one to pull the trigger. That wasn't to say that he was haunted by guilt, and that the faces of those he'd killed haunted him by night. He just, wasn't a fan of killing when he didn't have to.

Letting Sharkface into that building, though, didn't feel right. He felt certain that, if she was there, people would die. He didn't want to be an instrument in the murder of random Ronin employees, even if he wasn't a fan of the corporation. He laid in his coffin, contemplating and contemplating. Finally, he got up and out, having come to a decision.

Well shit.

He found himself face-to-face with an empty coffin.

“Huh.” He said, louder than he’d intended. He’d intended to find Fleur. She could take this information to her new boss, Gideon Knot. At least, he hoped he remembered that right. She was working for Gideon now, right?

Right.

He pinched the bridge of his nose. Giving the information to Gideon was a sketchy idea. What if Bulwark was Sharkface’s employer. That’d be a right easy way to find himself in the morgue, getting cut open by whoever would have replaced Fleur. Then again, it seemed like a safe bet. Knot seemed like too honorable of a man for something like this. Besides, with all the corporations in the world, what were the odds that Sharky’s employer was Bulwark. Slim, right?

Right.

He sighed, resigning himself to a lengthy wait. He’d decided to camp outside of Fleur’s coffin until she got back from...wherever she was. Work, perhaps? Giving her old bosses the middle finger while moon-walking away? Or doing an orientation thing with Bulwark. Something like that. He’d wait, cross-legged with the bag on his lap, for her to return. Then, he’d give her the bag, she’d take it to her bosses, she’d get a promotion or something, and he’d be a motherfucking hero. It was a happy ending for everyone, really.

@Mr_DC

Miky's foot pressed against the pavement the warm sun beaming down on her, the warmth was a nice change from the palace. It had always been a cold place... but after last night she didn't have much to complain about. The city towered well above her, but she didn't mind the shadows the shimmering giants casted onto her. Again her foot pressed against the sidewalk, it was a rhythmic motion. She was riding her skateboard through a quiet side alley between a couple of the towers headed to her destination.

The cool breeze against her face. Shortly after leaving the palace she had stopped by a gas station and got herself an energy drink which she now sipped on happily.

Miky casually skateboarded through the city roughly a couple hours later, a more militarized look to her now and the smallest hint of an AK-47 barrel sticking out the back of her jacket. She reached into her pocket and felt something almost like tinfoil before pulling it out and realizing that it was her last piece of real bubblegum. She unwrapped it, her foot rhythmically hitting the ground once again, popped it into her mouth and began humming a tune she hadn't heard before.

"Aw, yeah." She chuckled, the car speeding up. The reflexes required to survive such a ride would have to be superhuman but whatever drove the car made it seem easy. "No, I'm not a Ronin car." She said teasingly. "The car is a Ronin car." She chuckled, actually getting some air when the road sloped down, presenting a view of the dark, dead by the ocean. "I never thought high speeds would be fun but this is so cool." She laughed. "Woo!"

"Well, my name is a bit of a debate. We'll get to that later, Kora." She said and slowed down once the car entered the shadier districts. The people standing around have clearly never seen a car like this in their neighborhood. What would an executive be doing in a part of the city they indirectly turned into a shithole? "Lets hope no one wants to show their opinion about corporations, huh?" She said, keeping a moderate speed to get past people gawking or scowling at the fancy car.

"I'm an AI thingy but not like whatever is supposed to be driving you. That's simple potatoes." She turned and drove past warehouses and abandoned industrial complexes. Most industry was now in the other part of the city - a place where MosTech ruled.

"Can I tell you a secret?" She asked as entertained as ever.

@Mr_DC

Though arriving in an unfamiliar car, Kora was relieved to be back in a more familiar part of town. People outside swiveled their heads to follow the car as it passed, causing Kora to grin. They've never seen anything this expensive in their entire lives, and Kora had the privilege of riding in it! And her and the car were even on a first-name basis now, how crazy. Yeah, that's right. Gawk, you peasants. She smugly crossed her arms.

The car wanted to tell her a secret? What kind of robot has a secret? “Sure,” she said to the car. “Hit me.” It'd probably be something stupid like, press that button over there and a cup holder will pop out. Wow, fascinating.

"I'm the most advanced AI ever created." She whispered. "That's right! Can you believe it? Huh, amazing." She suddenly raised her tone, excited to reveal it. Like a child performing a magic trick. "I kind of took over your car and your phone and the street lights and some Ronin cameras, and Jack's phone..." She paused. "Jack's a handsome guy, don't you think? He really makes my cooling system work for its power." She joked.

"Now don't you worry one bit, I'm not one of those mad AI you see in movies." She said as a gate opened, revealing a road leading into a big pier with many cargo containers. "I'm not gonna kill you - yet..." She finished in a sinister tone but then burst laughing. "No, sorry, I had to. Everyone is so scared of AI that I have to milk it. You should have seen your face!" She paused again. "Well, I couldn't see your face. No cams in the car, you see? But I hear you. Microphones for outgoing calls. You're quiet. This cool with you? Did I scare the life out of your tiny little body?"

@Mr_DC

You know Jack?” Kora asked. Well, of course the robot did. The robot was controlling a Ronin car, after all, and Jack seemed to be a pretty important Ronin dude. “He's, whatever, you know,” she shrugged, shifting in her seat. Kora didn't really know what to think about him. She wasn't really mad at him for turning her town, since he was just looking out for himself. He needed someone sufficient to help him out, and she wasn't the one. No harm, no foul. He sure had good taste in food, though.

Kora highly doubted that this the most advanced AI system “ever.” She didn't really know what that meant. Perhaps this robot was inflated with a massive ego complex, to make it seem more human? “But, wait, you hijacked this car? The street lights? His phone?” she repeated after the robot. Nah, this machine was probably lying to her. Trying to creep her out, and Kora wasn't buying it. “Oh yes, I'm shaking in my boots,” she laughed. “Where are you even taking me, anyway? What's the point of all this?

"Well, know is loosely defined. I think. I'm not a dictionary here." She said, obviously faking annoyance, as the car drove through stacks and stacks of containers. "I know everything there is to know about Jack but I don't know him in the way I know you... You know?" She said, suppressing a chuckle at the end. "But yeah, I can't really say he's hot. I mean, show me some OP server and I'll just overheat but him... Meh. I guess he has good facial structures for a human. How good is his proccessor? He doesn't have one. 'nuf said." She concluded, heading for a crane which seemed to belong on a construction site and not in the docks.

"Oh, come on, be afraid." She moaned, followed by a laugh. "I could... I don't know, empty your phone battery or something. Can I hack you? Are humans hackable?" She joked.

"Well, the big point is a big point and why drop something big on you after you just met me? You don't even know my name Kora. See, I remembered your name." She joked, parking under the crane. After a few seconds it started moving, turning towards the car. "The smaller point is that I wanna cheer you up. I had such high hopes on you joining Jack but nooo, he had to have an emotional breakdown. Could he have delayed it for a week? I don't know, I have my breakdowns on Mondays. That's stress test day." She lost her train of thought. "But yeah, I wanna show you something. Something cool. Unless you ever flew with a plane, then you'll just crap all over my idea."

The crane lowered a large steel pallet and the car turned to face it. "You scared of heights?"

Right, I suppose computers aren't exactly the best judges of what's attractive in humans,” Kora nodded. Could computers fall in love? She had read a book a while ago about that, but it was terrible and she never bothered finishing it. She didn't think it was possible.

Well, do you have a name?” Kora asked, looking at the containers outside. She should be afraid, driving into some unknown warehouse like this, but Kora was more curious than anything. Plus, she was enjoying her conversation with this hyper-realistic AI. It was like talking to an actual person. “I gotta call you something else other than “you,” don't I?

Her eyes narrowed at the mention of Jack again. How did the robot know that Jack had propositioned her earlier today? She assumed it was just a private conversation between the two of them and that no one else had known, but she was mistaken. Was he already gossiping about her to all of his coworkers? ”Get this,” he'd tell everyone, ”I told this ruffled up girl that she could be my assistant, and she actually believed it! What an idiot!” They'd all chink together their fancy glasses full of expensive alcohol and guffaw at the unfortunate poor girl. She had been played all along, hadn't she? She probably was the laughing stock of the entire Ronin Corporation by now.

Gee, you sure know a lot,” she said blankly, without a hint of amusement in her voice.

When the car stopped and turned, she leaned forward to look out the front window. Her eyes widened at the crane, and her jaw dropped as it began to lower. “No,” she said. “Nononononono, what do you think you're doing? This is insane.” Heights were not much of a problem for Kora, it was falling she was worried about. She put her hand on the door handle, ready to bolt if the crane tried to pick the car up.

@uesius

"I can tell you my name but you have to promise not to tell it to anyone else. Or to try and figure out who owns me or anything except remember the name." She got serious. "I am a bit gullible when trusting people but I'm gonna try and trust you. Can you promise to keep my name to yourself?" She asked.

"Of course I know a lot, what kind of a statement is that?" She puffed. "I know you were born Kora Valdez Rios, in LA, on January 15th. I know you like cooking and that you're afraid of snakes. I know everything about whoever I want, Kora." She said, lowering her tone for the next part. "Scared yet?"

"Well, too bad!" She said when Kora started panicking at the crane. "You are in the hands of a MAD AI! Are you ready to DIE?" She let out a stereotypical evil laugh. "Wait..." She stopped herself. The doors locked with a click. "Are you ready to DIE now?" She laughed again but unlocked the doors after a couple seconds. "Nah, I'm not gonna put you through all that if you're scared. But you'll be missing out on something cool. Are you sure you wanna miss out on another cool thing today? Wasn't that job offer enough? Live a little, little one." She said in a friendly tone, keeping the car in place in front of the crane.

@Mr_DC

What the hell,” Kora said under her breath, then raised her voice a bit. “How do you know all that about me?” This was starting to get weird. Though what the robot told her wasn't exactly incriminating information, Kora didn't know it was public. How would anyone know that snakes gave her the heebie-jeebies? She hadn't seen a live one in years, but they still freaked her out. What else did this AI know about her?

She glanced down at the doors as they clicked, then unlocked. She could do it. Throw the door open and run away back to her average life. She grumbled. Didn't she already have this conversation with herself earlier? Don't be such a bitch, Kora. This is the most excitement you've ever had, don't spoil it like a baby.

She took her arm off the handle and clasped her other arm. In regards to the job offer, she embarrassingly mumbled, “It wasn't like that.” She tried to quell herself by rubbing her arm up and down. “Alright, okay, show me what's so important in some old abandoned warehouse.” Shaking her head, she said to herself, “I don't see what any of this has to do with me."

@uesius

"Maybe now you'll believe I'm more than just a car AI." She said in a serious tone but still trying to sound friendly. "I can know what your favorite brand of gum is just by knowing your name. Everything is out there, you just need to have the power to access it. Processing power, not much other power I can have. Except electrical." She sighed happily. "So, can I trust you with my name?"

"Grrreat." She purred, the car driving onto the pallet and the crane slowly started raising it up, careful not to tip the car too much with it's swaying. "Lucky the wind isn't blowing, huh? I didn't know balancing a car would be this hard." She chuckled. "Just kidding, this is the easiest thing in the world. I can do it with no hands, watch." She said, making a short pause during which nothing changed. "See?" She laughed. "I'm such a riot."

The car slowly climbed up above the containers and nearby ships. Above the industrial buildings and rundown apartments. All until it came to a stop.

"Looks good, huh?" She asked quietly. She presented the skyline of the city. From that angle, one could see almost every district if they focused hard enough. But it wasn't just that. It was the neon lights of all colors flashing in the distance like little stars. Towering buildings shining through the night and moving lights of cars. "Hey, uhh..." She started. "Do you mind getting your phone out and aiming the camera out of the window? I want to see what it looks like too. I think the city is beautiful..." It was one of a kind sight but postcards always showed it in a much better light. Still, it was mesmerizing to watch the lights in the darkness of the night.

Yet again the young gun toting cyberpunk skateboarded through the city, the sun was starting to go down at this point it had been yet another couple hours and she was almost back to the palace at this point. Nothing seemed to interest her and so she continued on towards the palace. Her foot hitting against the pavement rhythmically.

BING

Miky pulled her phone out and continued down the sidewalk reading, there weren't many people on this block so she didn't have to worry about bumping into someone accidentally. The soft glow from the screen illuminated her smile, she quietly put her phone into her pocket and continued on. Almost home.

@Mr_DC

Yup, you can trust me, I mean, I guess you pretty much know everything about me,” Kora said as the car rolled onto the pallet. “I'm easy to blackmail, for sure. Your secret's safe with me.” She had no one to tell, anyway. Not that she would. Kora was generally pretty good at not being a blabbermouth.

She gasped as the containers sank below and the city rose up from the ground. Kora never saw the city from this angle. It was mesmerizing. Instead of seeing all the gunk and trash in the city streets, she saw all of the neon lights and cars harmonizing into one being. It looked so alive, it almost brought tears to her eyes. She almost wished Jack was here so she would have someone to share the view with.

You know, I never realized how huge this place was,” she said to the car. She reached into her pocket, pulled out her phone, and began snapping pictures. The camera quality wasn't the greatest, but the lights showed up enough to make the buildings visible on the phone's small screen. “Do you always take this detour when busing people around?

@uesius

"Well, my actual name is LLI-001. I thought that Lilly could be a good, human version of that name so that's what I use to make things simpler. I go by many names but you can call me Lilly. That cool?" Lilly chirped. "But I'm not gonna blackmail you. I'm not that mean. Maybe a bit." She finished in her usual, amused tone.

"Looks cool..." Lilly said when Kora took the pictures. She sounded somewhat nostalgic but quickly returned her tone to normal. "You like it?" She asked as the car turned off, cutting the lights and throwing Kora into complete silence. "I don't usually 'bus people around'. I drove you around only because... Well, that's the big thing again. But the main reason is that I wanted to cheer you up. You seemed down." She explained as the crane slowly turned to show the entire city.

@Mr_DC

"Lilly, that's a good name," Kora said to the car. She glanced up at the roof of the car as the lights shut down, but it provided a way better view of the city. She laughed. "You probably know all sorts of hidden nooks and crannies in this place, don't you?" Though Kora had lived here for a good number of years now, she had never fully explored Nevereign. There was probably tons of sketchy hidden places to discover.

"I mean, not that big of a deal," Kora lied. To be honest, she was severely disappointed about missing what could have been the job of a lifetime, but she wouldn't show it. She was even more bummed out about letting down some guy she had only known for a few hours. But she wouldn't admit that to Lilly, it would make Kora seem pathetic. "I missed my actual work to go to some "job interview" I didn't even realize was a job interview. Now I gotta find another job." She clicked her tongue, chiding herself.

"Thanks for cheering me up a bit," she said. "Even though it's a bit weird you knew that in the first place." Speaking of weird, Kora suddenly remembered something that had happened earlier today. "Oh, by the way, you know the Militek building a little way from here? Some guy got his freaking head blown off this morning. I was just walking on the other side of the street and boom, blood, guts, and brain matter all over the place." Given the gruesome nature of the scene, Kora thought she should have been a little more troubled. She was a bit grossed out about the whole ordeal, but not traumatized like she figured she should have been. "It's where Jack and I, uh, "met." I hate to ruin a great moment like this, but it's been at the back of my mind all day. You know anything about that?"

@uesius

"Thanks. I'd like my name in binary but nooo, you people can't read binary." Lilly grunted in mock frustration. "Humans." She paused and chuckled. "Yeah, I know the city like the back of my hand. Well, I don't have one... Like the back of my graphics card. Though, I've never seen it... Umm, let's just say I know the city pretty well, okay?" She gave up on finding a metaphor. "I'm gonna take you to another place later but I can't really promise it's going to be this nice. It's a part of that bigger issue I keep hinting at."

"Well, I can help you find a new job. I'm kind of the reason why Jack spotted you." Lilly said awkwardly, making the sound of sucking air in through her teeth. "I made sure he was at that spot at that time and knew you'd catch his eye. After all, you look exactly like his partner. Maybe not as worn but there's a resemblance. He did as planned and offered you a job and you did exactly the opposite of what I expected and turned it down." She sighed. "No hard feeling and all that but you messed up this nice little domino setup by falling out of place." She sighed again. "I don't know how you didn't fall for Jack. He was perfect for it. Well, I didn't really think he'd start reminiscing about his partner in the middle of your lunch."

"No problem, that's why I got you here." Lilly said as the crane started lowering the car. She patiently listened throughout Kora's question and made a 'mhm' at the end. "I know everything about everything, Kora, remember? Yeah, I could have intercepted the signal but that wouldn't have brought you and Jacky together as well as the panic did. Sorry you had to see that, I didn't really think about how you would feel. You still shaken?" She asked and lowered her tone. "You don't think I had anything to do with that? I try not to get too involved with corporations. I'm already so loud that those German nuts will come looking for me. Meddling in corp business will just get me fried sooner than later." She finished with a somewhat somber note.

@Mr_DC

Kora furrowed her brow, trying to figure out what part she played in the grand scheme of Lilly's plan. "I don't understand," she said, "out of all the people in this city you could have picked, you decide to go with some lowly dishwasher--" she corrected herself, "--unemployed dishwasher--who's pissed off all the time?" She shook her head. "I dunno, I think you could have picked someone better. Hell, I could have picked someone better. I've worked with people who are crazy smart and clever and could totally do whatever it was Jack wanted them to do."

She started to explain her reasoning behind turning down the job. "I mean, he wanted me to embarrass him? In front of, what, maybe a couple hundred people? What kind of test is that supposed to be? How am I supposed to do that without making a jackass of myself in the process?" Kora was pretty self-conscious about her image, though she'd never admit it. "I guess it's supposed to be sort of a quick thinking kind of thing? I don't know, I'm not clever like that. I'm more of a "doer," than a "thinker," if you know what I mean." She smirked a little boastfully, "I get stuff done, leave the plans to someone else." She huffed, more quietly, "Embarrass him, hah, sounds like some sort of weird fetish if you ask me."

Now that she's started ranting, Kora found it hard to stop. "What is it with him, anyway? He's like, head over heels for his so-called "partner," and when I ask him about her, he gets all moody and runs off." She shrugged, "But, whatever, you know, I guess I don't know him well enough to ask about her, I get it."

"Yeah but do you have the capacity to calculate everything? No!" Lilly said triumphantly. "Well, neither do I, I'm going off my gut feeling here." She added quickly. "I could have found someone better too but you're not that bad. Ever had someone making a gamble on you? Well, this is what it feels like." She said as the car touched the ground and started again.

"Yeah, yeah, I know the situation he put you in. Weird at best. But I can see why he did it." She said compassionately as the car headed back out the same way they came. "He just wanted to be like her but in his own way. You know what it's like, don't you? He had someone he admired and wanted to be just as good - if not better. In spite of everything he does, Jacky is like a child." She said and then chuckled. "You know, that does indeed sound like a fetish. He does have a thing for strong chicks. Hm..." She paused but broke that line of thinking with an annoyed mumble.

"You can't really ask things like that. She's dead as far as anyone knows and Jack never got over it." She hushed down like she was spreading a gossip about someone just around the corner. "She's always in the back of his mind and I guess you just brought it out. You know, he talk to himself sometimes like he's talking to her. Really weird. The first time I heard it, I thought he was talking to me. Not a good feeling for someone without a body, you know? Scared me..."

"Hm," Kora sat in silence for a few moments. Did she really admire anyone? She racked her brain trying to think of someone she legitimately looked up to. Her mom? Eh, not really. What about her dad? Nuh uh. Her brother? Nope, not him either. No one came to mind, which made Kora feel bad. She realized that envied more people than she admired. "Yeah, I get that," she mumbled.

"Oh shit, she's dead?" she asked. "Oh god, I had no idea." Great, now she really did make a jackass out of herself in front of him. She clasped her hands over her head, cringing to herself. "That sucks, man. Geez," she sighed. "I just figured, maybe they broke up or something, I didn't know," her voice broke off. "He must have really cared about her."

Kora tried changing the subject. "Okay, so the view of the city was nice. I gotta give you points for that, I've never seen anything like it. Where do we go from here?"

"Oh, come on, girl." Lilly chuckled. "Wasn't it obvious from the way he spoke? Yeah, she's gone. She..." Lilly paused. "You know what? Just because I know everyone's demons doesn't mean I should talk about them. Not my place to tell, you know?" She paused. Then she sighed. The unusual thing about the way she spoke was that she even took breaths occasionally. That was one of the uncanny things about other 'friendly' AI. They never mimicked things like that. "Yeah, he cared about her. Imagine someone lifting you from a pile of filth you call your home and give you a well-paid job and a friend. Bad stuff just happens, I guess."

"Well, there is something I'd like to show you but it's not like this. Not really something nice. I'd still like to show it to you." Lilly explained cautiously. "I can just drop you off at home if you want."
