Think of crime researchers as unqualified detectives, either withholding from enrolling in the NYPD, or being unable to make the cut. They spend a majority of their time out and about, collecting evidence, speaking to witnesses or key persons, building an unbiased and independent inquiry on behalf of individuals with complaints, tips or leads. They will liaise with writers to build a factual and impartial case that seeks to reveal answers and truth amid missed opportunities, malpractice and failed inquiries.

The writers are The New York Chronicle's bread and butter. They form the very words that are printed and ingested by readers across the globe. Their penmanship and craft must withstand the toughest critics: the general public. Just as they scrutinise the evidence and lay the hard truth out bare, the readers will do the same. Lose the confidence of the public; lose the very foundation the department is built on. Writers must balance the demand for good stories with the demand for honesty and integrity in a city fast losing hope in both the government, the public services, and the media. They must liaise between crime researchers and the department head to produce a piece of print deemed fit for press.

The interns are usually students or recent graduates looking to get a foot in the door with investigative journalism. If they can find a friend in any of the established researchers or writers in the department, their experience at The New York Chronicle may be the perfect opportunity to hone their skills and practice their career.   Melanie takes herself very seriously; serious clothes, serious hair, serious face. Her expression sits in a somewhat unfortunate natural frown, or so-called “resting bitch face”, making her appear perpetually unimpressed; agitated, even, at her own existence.   Kira, though known for her lack of natural composure and grace, has an appearance of effortless beauty that transcends her messy locks and and mismatched socks. Gifted with a pretty face and a naturally forthcoming air about her, she has no problem proving that she’s always been the pretty friend, or the popular girl, or the one guys at bars always chat up first. It can be frustrating to be around her for those who can’t help comparing themselves to the type of people who just naturally have it all. Worse, Kira truly fails to see it. No matter how hard she tries or doesn’t, her “hot mess” appearance will always prevail. Her big, brown eyes, which seize attention for better or worse, are constantly shifting between fight or flight, never truly remaining at rest. It only takes one glance to tell that Kira, though oddly charming, is perpetually teetering on the edge.
  
  In fact, she hates dressing for work. Most often clad in basic, inoffensive business casual attire, Kira is straight out of an episode of *The Office*. She’s not one for fashion, though remnants of her fashion-forward years in high school and college slip into her daily outfits. Some days, she can surprise with a bit of tasteful coordination. She usually opts for a minimal to well-done makeup look depending on how much time she has on the drive to work, but it usually comes together… usually. Other than that, she’s an avid sweatpants-wearer on her “off days” and will take any opportunity she can get to wear pajamas all day. She has no interest in impressing anyone, and has had a rather apprehensive approach toward her outward appearance since she’s been out of a relationship. Why bother, right?

  There's not much in Kira's upbringing that would indicate what sort of mascaraed disaster she would eventually grow into. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, family has caused no shortage of complications. She's at least got a little brother who stood by her side in the years of chaos that would eventually culminate in their parents splitting, not that it took anyone by any measure of surprise. Kira was in middle school when, over ice cream, her mom and dad carefully explained their future custody arrangement with gritted teeth, mutual animosity practically leaking through the gaps.
  
  It sucked, but they made it work. The fact that life goes on isn't a hard concept for some to grasp, though it may lead to some crippling emotional shortcomings later down the road...
  
  So, cut to high school. Kira was known as kind of an ice queen, but she got away with it because shutting up and looking pretty tends to win favors at this stage in life. Already endowed with conventional attractiveness, an upper-middle class household income (on both sides!), and the right friends, the road to high school popularity was practically laid out with a red carpet with flashing, neon signs to boot. And Kira loved every second of it.
  
  She came to realize that she's the type of girl who, though totally badass and self-reliant, always needed to be in a relationship. And with the amount of guys at the doorstep of Kira Gauthier, number-two most popular girl at West Baltimore High, finding an arm to drape around her shoulder was no problem. She threw parties while the parents were away, dished at exclusive sleepovers, and double-date vacationed to the beach all while sitting on top of a 3.7 GPA average (thanks, Mark, for that depressive slump sophomore year). Say what you will about fading beauty or peaks or whatever, but Kira's teen years were a blast.
  
  And she has junior year to thank for the love of her life, Gabriel.

  And then college! Graduating with honors and degrees in political science and criminal justice, Kira the pre-law student had a bright future. Now in a relationship for five years with her high school flame, Gabriel, there were already talks of marriage by their third year. They were both bright and more than ready to take on the world, so what was there to lose? Fuck it! Young love.
  
  So, as planned, the two had a wedding ceremony the very same July after graduation. Well... graduation for one of them. Kira's now-husband dropped out his third year to pull off the whole "take a gap year, work minimum wage, and find myself" routine. Kira never judged him for it; she knew Gabriel had a complicated relationship with goals in life, but never did she see it as a lack of commitment. After all, they'd managed a relationship this far.
  
  Pressured to provide amid a tightness of funds, a waning job market, and competition at schools, Kira put off grad school and moved to full-time to stabilize their income. Gabriel was more than pleased staying where they were at, especially now that he had been promoted to manager at the restaurant he worked at. In therapy, Kira sorta came to realize how much it pained him to see his wife so successful while he stayed virtually the same, no clear aspirations in sight.
  
  And it was fine, for a while. The two managed to secure a small apartment space in Manhattan, the city Kira and Gabriel had promised each other they'd live in when they were still 18. Kira always dreamed of being a big-time lawyer and Gabriel had once talked of pursuing civil engineering in a big city. Well, now they had the big city part down.
  
  Through university connections, Kira started interning at The New York Chronicle soon after the move from Baltimore, and she fell in love with the profession. Though without strong guiding principles in her early life, Kira did eventually develop a keen sense for justice and fairness in the people around her. She loved aiding in research, making calls, and traveling after-hours to gather information for her colleagues' stories. The crime department of the paper was her calling, especially given her academic background and extensive knowledge on the law. Hell, she spearheaded a campaign for more dining hall entree options her freshman year of college.
  
  But the more time Kira spent working and studying, the more Gabriel's insecurities began to peek through. The two would fight often about Kira's commitment to their relationship, which soon turned to deeper jealousy and suspicion toward the other. Little did she know, Kira had become a perfect replica of her parents.
  
  The day she did draw that comparison was the final straw. One day, Kira returned late from work to her husband standing in the kitchen, frowning and tapping his foot. She had promised to make it home early that night, as it was their long agreed-upon date night. But the guys at the paper needed extra aid before she left, especially with the mounting prolific case slated to hit the next day's headlines.
  
  Kira tried to explain—not without her own guilt—but Gabriel wouldn't listen. He was convinced she was seeing another man or, if not that, she had grown bored of the man she already had in her life. More and more Kira fought against it until, suddenly, the energy in the room seeped through the cracks. This wasn't going to work. All of this long-standing tension, all of these differences... they were irreconcilable.
  
  And so, after seven long, passionate, excruciating years, Kira and Gabriel split. God, she looked a fool sitting outside in the chilly bite of the winter night explaining her situation through choked sobs to her brother, who was on the way from his place in Philly.

  Kira was never quite the same after her divorce. It's been only about two years, give or take, but the sting of losing a picture-perfect life feels as fresh as yesterday. Confined to her apartment for a long while, Kira's emotional state fell into disarray as she lamented all of the sacrifices she made for a man whose insecurities ultimately fell short of her ambitions. How could she, somewhere along the way, lose the independence she prided herself on?
  
  She had to make up for that. Though losing a touch of her gentle naivete and altogether "put-together"-ness, Kira replaced her love and her former self with even more drive for career-related recognition. By this point, she had flown through the ranks at her job, landing a position as a crime and law consultant, which soon translated into her current role as a crime investigator. Ha! Who needs law school now?
  
  She's respected at work, at least on paper. Her insights and past accomplishments are nothing to scoff at, but it only takes one glance to tell that Kira's not your average specialist. As much as she's a jack-of-all-trades at work, her mind and appearance follow very little organization. She's hard to take seriously even on the job; who needs professionality when you know what you're doing? Why bother listening to problems when you already know the solution?
  
  It can be hard to follow an investigation led by a lady whose break times involve box wine and stealing leftover spaghetti from the breakroom fridge. Even more, it can be downright insane believing that such a small, eccentric woman has the balls to question even the seediest of witnesses, but who can argue with the sound logic that follows from her reports? If she could do it all again, Kira would have applied for a role on a detective show in a heartbeat. Then again, this gig is already pretty fulfilling. More than any stagnating relationship could provide, though it's not hard to convince the brain of that. The heart, on the other hand...

  To say Kira Gauthier doesn't give a damn would be the last understatement you'd make in your life. Emboldened with a brash taste for reality checks, she has a stubborn will and a tendency to veer off the rails without supervision. She's an efficient worker with strange methods and if you leave her to it, either astounding success or hilarious failure ensues.
  
  She has a penchant for sarcasm, which arises from her blunt nature. If she's her true, authentic self at all times, why shouldn't everyone else be? Obviously she's not a giant asshole that goes around saying what's on her mind every five seconds, but she does have a habit of making her opinion known, whether by her words or actions. She can keep her mouth shut just as easily as the next guy, but it won't be without a lifted brow or roll of the eyes. She's always making mental notes, judgments clearly swirling on the surface of her eyes like a whooshing pool of water.
  
  Presentation is not her thing. It hardly bears repeating after one look at her messy apartment and her rushed outward appearance. That being said, everything in her desk and home follows a complicated system of "Kira knows where it is, it's just buried under a very specific pile of papers." She's a workaholic and it's entirely consumed her life. Most often, she's the first to start working and the last to fall asleep, head down on her desk besides a reheated plate of lasagna and a cup of black coffee.

  A confused but determined look on his face, accompanied by a smile and an always-orderly combed hair. Appropriate clothing, usually from the sweater and pants section of Abercrombie & Fitch, or occasionally a short-sleeved button up if the sun is shining a tad too much that day. In a crowd, it’s not hard to spot him, that is, if you know who you’re looking for. If you don’t, he blends in fairly well into a group of young white men.
  
  Of average height and weight, his clothes—the ones mentioned in the paragraph before—fit him comfortably, and that doesn’t help the fact that he doesn’t have a single intimidating bone inside his body. In fact, his voice, even when angry, sounds soothing to hear, and when his eyebrows furrow in anger, he just looks more confused if anything.

  Alfie was born son to the Manhattan mogul Alfred Payne, Sr, who, just as one would suspect, had more money than one would ever need in their lifetime. He was a good father, though, perhaps a bit strict, and lacking in showing love, but a good father nonetheless. He taught his only son the importance of money, made sure not to give him every single thing he wanted in order not to spoil him. He knew his son was destined to one day take over the company, so from day one, he made sure to start training him into a successful business man.
  
  His mother wasn’t much different than his father. She respected his ways and tried to adapt to them because, at the end of the day, she agreed with them. And Alfie truly wasn’t missing anything in these formative years of his life. At least he didn’t know otherwise.

  Of course, puberty wasn’t an avoidable thing, and the tight parenting that worked before turned into a bunch of yelling and fights which nobody particularly enjoyed doing. This was the time when Alfie started really getting into the creative side of himself, just beginning to figure out what he actually wanted to do in his life.
  
  The expectations of his parents started to clash with his own ideas of what he wanted for himself, and that was the main reason the fights started. But like previously stated, Alfred Payne, Sr. was a good father. All he wanted, at the end of the day, was for his son to be happy, so he indulged the creative path his son was taking because he didn’t think it would stick.
  
  When the college acceptance letter with a full scholarship to one of the best writing programs in the country arrived at the Payne residence, well, a fight ensued. And the two men of the household didn’t talk for the next few months until time came for Alfie to move out and actually go to college.
  
  The plane ride to Boston was short, but a good closure moment. Because Alfie then knew that while his father didn’t like the path he was taking in life, he still loved him as his son, and that that fact would never change for anything.

  College was actually somewhat easy for Alfie. He knew what the professors wanted from him, he exceeded their expectations, and most importantly, he learned more and more every day. He realized that while creative writing was a fun hobby, journalism was the thing for him. He was just naturally good at covering stories, talking to people, and the style of writing that was fit for newspapers matched his own flawlessly.
  
  When he returned to New York, he started working as an intern in the New York Chronicle’s celebrity gossip department. In fact, it didn’t take long for his own article to take the front page, that one being on the royal wedding back in 2018.
  
  And what he thought was due to his journalism skills leading him to the front page, he soon moved up to the full writer position in the same department. Life was good for him then. The job was amazing. The salary was more than satisfactory, and most important of all, people respected him for him, not because of who his father was.

  Alfie described in one word…phew…a hard choice. He’s social, sure, but one wouldn’t say that he’s a social butterfly. He doesn’t stutter his words and doesn’t have a hard time making jokes, but it would be wrong to say he thrives in social environments. He likes making friends, and likes to work on his friendships. He cares for people, deeply, and wants the people around him to succeed, even if it hinders his own success.
  
  Would that make him compassionate? Of course, but that’s the way people who know him would describe him. He doesn’t really show his compassion to people he doesn’t know in fear of being used. So, those two scenarios combined, along with the fact he doesn’t know a lot of people, well, it doesn’t exactly make him compassionate in the full sense of that word.
  
  The word people around him would use to describe him would be absentminded or even go so far as careless. But that’s simply because they don’t reside inside his mind where thoughts fly a thousand miles an hour, sometimes making him unable to focus on just one thing at one time. He did try taking ADHD medication at one point, but they didn’t really help, so he gave up on trying to make the thoughts go away altogether.
  
  And I know you think that would make him a quitter, but he rarely ever quits when it comes to things he actually wants to do. Because he’s determined. And smart. And really good at getting information. And a writer. He’s a writer. Yes.

  In essence, Viv is an opportunistic and resourceful individual who has no qualms with stepping on others with her crafty and deceptive nature — if it means outwitting and beating those ahead of course. Ruthlessly ambitious and brimming with unparalleled tenaciousness, Viv's eyes are always on the prize. It isn't a surprise why some call her greedy, always wanting more; never being satisfied with her achievements. Some may say obsessed.
  
  Those who face Viv head on are in for a challenge, with her fiery and argumentative predisposition that even makes the best of them nervous. Passionate, articulate and clever, Viv's conversationalist skills are striking. All of these combined make her a marvel to watch in an argument and explain why she is the first-speaker of her ivy league college debate team and has clambered high in the celeb gossip department — many often forgetting she is a mere intern, even Viv herself.
  
  A keeper and finder of secrets, many watch their tongue around Viv with the fear their secrets will be weaponised against them (and rightfully so); yet her charm has been known to loosen the tightest of lips to get the treasure trove of secrets within. From celebrities she interviews to her fellow classmates and colleagues, no one is safe. If one isn't willing to share, Viv has her ways; having no issue with impersonating staff and snooping through their hotel rooms or other morally-questionable activities. While it has gotten her scathed at times by the higher-ups in the department, no one can question her results that have featured in the celeb gossip columns.
  
  Viv is unfortunately quick to anger and seemingly has no patience, often translating into losing her cool. Another emotion that can consume her is jealously or envy for the trust-fund babies that roam the ivy school or the streets of New York. Which is odd considering she claims to come from a wealthy family herself. It is a fifty-fifty chance that someone better than her could overcome her with envy and anger or motivate her to push further; often obsessing over being the very best she can, even if it isn't plausible. Late nights studying and plotting are common for Viv. Thankfully, she doesn't shut down for long in the face of adversity, her past building a thick layer of pure grit and resilience.
  
  Outside of the classroom and newsroom, people actively avoid Viv's judgemental and sharply perceptive gaze. Known for her snide remarks, judgements and her affinity for gossip (that only doubled when offered an internship for the celeb gossip department), Viv can easily be stereotyped as a mean girl. Yet, these judgements are purely done in group settings, are surface level comments and seemingly used as bargaining chips to get along with the other 'popular kids' or caddy colleagues. As for gossip about Viv, she is usually exempt with her exquisitely crafted outfits, exceptionally high grades and work ethic, leaving little room for criticism. Yet, if one was to study her closely, they would begin to notice how rigid and rehearsed her poised walk was; how in heated moments an accent creeps through; or how she struggles to relate to the other wealthy students and their lavish childhoods. It doesn't help that Viv's past is often brought into question with it becoming more and more muddled as time passes.
  
  Some may think she is heartless, yet Viv has no intention of harming those who don't threaten her goals and achievements. Stay out of her warpath and one may gain a friend who has no qualms sticking up for them or even maiming those who threaten them. Her friendships can seem one sided in some regards, with her being wildly independent and barely ever asking for help. Furthermore, Viv lacks honesty, even with her friends and colleagues, keeping them at a cool distance.
