Shame

A writer that has lost her words
Setting: It is late summer, August 12th, the first day of the school year. The air is hot, but a light breeze is sweeping across the mountain to make the temperature more tolerable. It is a sunny morning, only just 9am, with a few clouds dotting the blue sky. The screams of cicadas call from the trees with periodic interjections of loud hoots from unseen owls.

Location: Auditorium
With: Everyone

Calculating brown eyes slid over the students sitting in the Auditorium as if trying to memorize each and every excited face in the packed seats. Mae could tell that they were getting restless, anxious to just get this whole orientation thing over with. The returning students had heard all of this before, so many probably wondered why this was mandatory for them while some of the Ras and the students that had stayed over the summer were excused from the event to usher more students into the Auditorium. The new students were probably nervous, having been escorted to their seats as soon as they had arrived, their luggage taken from them and replaced with their dorm key, a school map, and their class schedule. They hadn’t even had time to explore, meet their roommates, see their new rooms, or make new friends. They had simply been dropped off at the front gate and guided toward the Main Building.
If they were nervous, she was definitely nervous, but Mae hid it well on her solemn face. This was only her second year as Headmistress (though she had helped her father with the school for years before). Her brown eyes moved from the students to the teachers stationed in the back row. Most of them, she knew, we're still unsure of her. They didn't like how young she was or how different she was from the previous Headmaster. She shrugged to herself, an almost imperceptible gesture in her dark burgundy kimono. She had decided during her first year not to care what they thought of her so long as they did their job, but it was one thing to decide something and another to enact it.
As the students finished settling in, her eyes moved to look upward toward the rafters. Sitting on one of them was a small shape, draped in a cloak resembling the form of an owl. Mae couldn't see her face from the stage, but she just knew Fukurou was grinning underneath her hood. All these new students meant new pranks, new gossip, new naïve victims to give her sweets.
Mae sighed and returned her gaze to the students, deciding that they had waited long enough. She stepped onto the stage and took her place behind a tall dark podium. She adjusted the microphone and took a moment to catch the students’ attention and take a deep breath.
"I am," She began, her soft voice resounding through the Auditorium and silencing all chatter, "Headmistress Mae Nakahara and I welcome you all to another year here at Mt. Fukurou Academy for the Gifted."
Mae paused, maybe for dramatic effect, her stern gaze sweeping across her audience once more.
"I encourage you all to partake in sports, make new friends, join clubs, get jobs, and most importantly be safe,” she enunciated the word sharply.
“I'd also like to remind you all of the most significant rules of the Academy. Fighting is allowed only within The Cage. Use of magic against another student is allowed only within The Cage. Non-humanoid students are only allowed off school grounds in disguise. And the most crucial rule is that no one must ever, ever discover the true nature of this Academy,” She continued, her last sentence resounding through the Auditorium as she paused again. A few of the students murmured to each other
"The human world is not kind to those that are different, those that are special, so this school masquerade as a gifted academy and you as human students. We have a very strict no visitor policy here, and we have protected our secret for over two hundred years. This is a safe place for you all, and I hope, I sincerely hope, that Mt. Fukurou can become like a home to you and your fellow students like family."
The Headmistress returned her eyes to the rafters, but the Owl Imp was gone. She let out a small groan under her breath but kept her expression neutral.
"Take the weekend to explore, move into your rooms, and make friends. Your dorm number is on the key you were given with your map and your schedule. Do not lose these. If you did not receive these or have any questions, please visit the table set up just outside. Classes begin Monday morning at 9:15 am. Do not be late.” She paused, maybe for more dramatic effects.
“You are dismissed," Mae concluded, walking off the stage in a subtle fast walk and leaving the students to their own devices. She had an Imp to find before she made any trouble.

"Mae is such a prude,” came a voice, muffled as if the person speaking were eating something.
“An absolutely boring stick in the mud. I mean, do you hear her? Blah, blah, rules, blah, blah, expectations, blah, blah more rules." The voice, one that could have been either male or female, continued. An owl blinked up at the source of the voice, a figure draped in a peculiar cloak sitting on the rafters on the Auditorium. The figure casually sipped at tea before continuing the conversation with the owl again, as if this were an ordinary, everyday occurrence to speak to owls as though they could talk back.
"I just want this to end," Fukurou whined like a child, leaning back further than one ought to go.
The Owl Imp flipped backwards, now hanging from the rafters upside down like a bat. The tea from her cup, luckily cold, dropped down onto a student below. Said student looked up in surprise, searching for the source of a presumed leak, but Fukurou was already gone.
The troublesome Imp was now floating lazily on her back over the audience as though simply floating around in a pool.
    “You are dismissed.”
“Thank the gods!” Fukurou breathed as she changed directions and floated through the exit of the auditorium. She lowered herself to the ground and took her position by the door, ready for the students to pour out. In a blink of an eye, she was someone else. It wasn't a gradual transformation, but something more like a glitch. One second, she was a figure shrouded in a weird cloak, standing below the height of five feet, the next she was the form of a blonde, tanned girl with sunglasses.... still below the height of five foot.
The doors of the auditorium opened, the students coming out in herds. Fukurou stepped into the crowd and disappeared among the students.

Severynd held a massive black umbrella that he conjured with his ability to protect himself against the harsh sun, thankful for every breeze that hit his face. Being large in heavy, black clothing, the summer weather wasn't exactly his best friend. He stood in the auditorium doorway, guiding new children in and motioning to their seats. Many students stared at him because of his height and size, which made him feel a bit embarrassed, but it wasn't anything new. His gold eyes scanned all the new faces, reminding himself of his first year at the academy. The nervousness, the excitement, it was all coming back to him. Hopefully there were more nice kids this year, Severynd could use a few friends. As he finally shut the door behind all the students, he turned to see Mae walk up to the podium. He couldn't help but sigh with a bit of relief at the sight of her, seeing as she came back for a second year. She was the one who mentioned the library position, seeing as though he always had his nose in a good book. It was the best advice he'd ever been given.

Severynd's ears twitched slightly as Mae spoke, hearing a second voice amongst the chatter. He looked up, swearing he heard someone, only to find she was gone, his gold eyes following a drop of tea all the way down to a student's shoulder. How strange for there to be a leak on a sunny day like this... Severynd heard Mae conclude her speech, the same as always, and watch as children rushed for the door, making a quick twist to open it as a shorter blonde student scurried out. He held his umbrella firmly, it's glassy texture reflecting light as he hid beneath it. He didn't even bother to offer help to the released students, but would have gladly assisted them if they needed it. Not only did his stutter make it impossible to get a sentence out in time, but he was much too intimidating to most of the new students.

Mercury and Emerald made there way into the auditorium.
Mercury had his collar of his brown lethal jacket flicked up and the top of his hair tied into cornrows to keep his under cut stiyle from out of his face. His sister had always done his hair and he never let anyone, but her touch it. He could feel his skin getting sticky underneath the leather, but he was not about to remove the jacket. He glared at everyone as he had his right arm draped over his twins shoulders. It was a protective stance, he had never trusted anyone at his old school and this one would be no different.
His right leg started to bounce up and down as he waited for the chick up the front to stop talking.
Damn. All he wanted was that sweet hit of nicotine. He could feel his body craving it, calling for it. When would she shut up?
He let out a deep breath and glanced around at the other students who where sitting down. A freak show... every single one of them.
He glanced down at his sister who was exsaming her own hands. He hoped none of these freaks would have a go at her.
His ears pricked up when he heard mention of this Cage. A cold grin came to his lips. It was the only thing he liked the sound of in this school.

Emerald kept her headphones on and just kept looking at her hands. She was glad to get out of her old school, but how was this one going to be any different? They were coming here as a last resort for Merc. Otherwise it was military school and Sarah the twins adopted mother knew Em would never survive a school like that.
Emerald lifted her ocean blue eyes up from the spot she had fixated on her hand. She quickly looked down again when the voice started coming back to her mind. She turned up her music and simply started reading through the booklet she was given.

P - "I've never been so excited! Okay, maybe I was this excited before, but that was then. Today, this is the most excited, yes!"

It's hard to keep it all in when there's a new experience to be had. Really really hard to keep it all in.
So much that Penny almost lost control of her shell disguise while waiting at the gate that morning to be let in.
Penny fidgeted, adjusting her skirt, her shoes, her glasses, her hair, everything. If anyone was around that early, it would've been weird.
After fidgeting, it's time to get *distracted*.

P - "Oh man oh man oh man I love this gate, this fence, these....BUGS! I bet those are ants! I hope everyone is going to like those ants"
Translation, Penny is scared half to death that she won't make friends, because she wants them. It's lonely back home, it's cold and a little
too void for a young Beholder. "I'm not READY to be jaded!"

---

Penny tried to make friends with anyone that she saw, who got within range, but it wasn't working just yet.
*Don't give up yet* She thought, and then thought, and thought some more. So much that Penny didn't even notice the gates open, students rushing in, or an RA coming to collect her.
P - "Oh wowzers! Are you my roommate? Is this how you handshake?" She was guided to the Auditorium by the busy Ra.

P - "Ghuuuuuu-This. Is. Swank. I love, this shape, I love this room, it fits so many of us- Oh? I sit over here? Okay."
"Can I take off my disguise now? I can! Sweet, I felt so cramped." Penny crouched into a ball, and then became the ball, then floated up, and opened her eye.
"That's better than taking off a shoe." And then she sat, and listened intently.

---

After the Orientation, Penny froze up in the choas of moving classmates, trying to scan everyone, but it's hard to do that when they all move
about like a school of fish avoiding a predator. "Hi! Urm- hey! Can someone help me? I've got this map and key but I'm new here, and terrified".

Severynd heard the soft cries of help from the beholder. He became awfully curious in the girl, having read about beholders, but not much. He saw this one was in distress, and decided it would be best to approach her before she destroyed a student's shoe or something. Severynd took careful, slow steps through students as he made his way to Penny, being sure to approach her from the front so he didn't startle her. He crouched only lightly, as he usually had to do.
"H-Hey there, are y-you alright? Why don't you t-tell me your name..."
Severynd tried to appear as friendly as possible, something he struggled with quite a bit, seeing as he didn't even smile. He didn't see a hand to shake, so he held his hand against his chest to address himself friendly.
"M-My name is Severynd..."
Severynd watched her reactions and behaviors, not as if she was a lab rat, but genuinely interested in her as a person. It wasn't often you met someone that was so different, well, actually you did, but this gal was even... more different.

Penny held back her enthusiasm at being approached, the last person she yelled "HI" to ran off, it might have been the eye droplets.
"You're TALL! I like it! Uh that's probably weird to say, oh well! (Oh yeah! Not too strong)
You said your name is Severynd? I'm Penny! Sorry about staring at you." Stares at Severynd, blinks now and then.
Attempts to emulate the hand on chest, by stretching out, an eye stalk to her...below her eye.
"There's a lot of people here! How do you feel about that?"

Severynd was deeply amused by her constant thought-to-mouth rambling, giving a hearty chuckle that boomed with his deep voice. It seemed his new small friend had a lot on her mind. The way she mimicked him, spoke what she was thinking, stared, it was all very refreshing, ironically. It was just so innocent, and there wasn't a lot of that to go around anymore. He looked around at the bustling crowds.
"I like the c-crowds, it m-makes me feel like l-less people are staring at me..."
Severynd looked back to Penny, tilting his head lightly.
"S-So, Penny, w-would you like me t-to escort you to y-your dorm? w-we could wander around the s-school and I can show y-you where your classes are..."

Serenity was making her way through the crowd, remembering all the things that Mae said from the past year, wondering if it would be different. She got her key and schedule. She went into the auditorium and looked around at all the newbies.

*keep your cool Serenity*she thought to herself, trying not make faces at all these weird creatures like she had the past years. She thought about how she didn’t make many friends last year when, Mae started to talk. She hated being alone but she didn’t want to get into people’s business like she always did.

She sat and looked around waiting to be dismissed to her dorm and soon enough, she was dismissed. Serenity stood up and walked down the hallways thinking about love and such until she found her dorm and went inside. She flapped down on her bed and just layer there for awhile.

Oh how the new year is about to start. New friends, new opportunities to learn. How she missed this enviroment. Her estranged brother believed this school to be one of the most accepting out there. "However, there are always outliers." She remembered that quote as if it was tattooed onto her forehead backwards. After the speech and kind welcoming from the headmistress, she decided to take a quick ten minute nap in the field. The grass swayed from the northern winds, light coasting over it all in waves as they ate. She kneeled down, tucking her skirt between her thighs as she relaxed. She wasnt worried about a thing. Not finding her dorm. Not about wandering eyes. She will just enjoy the soft yellow sun beaming onto her bright yellow fur that contrasted with the lime green of the field. Trees and hills line the horizon, a boring background. Nanas head slumped down then came the heaviness of her eyelids. She slept peacefully, unaware of the world as she began her descent into a faint dream. Her ears slumped behind her head, the tips and base a bright tasty orange.

Serenity stood up and walked to the window. She noticed A peculiar bunny thing laying on the ground by herself. *Maybe I can make a new friend* She thought. Serenity opened the window and used telekinesis to fly down to her.

“Hey,” Serenity said, trying not to sound shy or anything.

Folly-Derrezzed Folly-Derrezzed

The Altra snorted, the back of her spiking out in response to the surprise of the petit girl behind her. The spikes sunk down and the fur returned, the rabbit groaning before standing wearily. She turned to them, releasing a yawn and stretching. It sounded roughly like a bag of metal beads shifting. Her eyes were glossy white before blinking in crystal blue irises.

"Good afternoon. My names..nnnana. Nana." She blinked more, her long eyelashes fluttering out. Nana gave a polite smile, showing her pearly white teeth. They were unnaturally serrated, hugging more prominent buck teeth. The markings on her cheeks were pushed back from the corners of her lips. "Dont mind me here, i was just taking a quick nap in the sun. Im ssaying, it feels just AMAZING." She said with soft cheer, her tail flickering left and right as she adjusted her bowtie. She gave the stranger a lookover, looking at her clothes. Bland, she thought. "It could be fixed..", she said under her breath, tilting her head to the right.

Serenity looked over. “Oh, yes,” she said looking back at Nana. “I’m Serenity,” she said and tipped her hat. Serenity pulled her flannel back over her shoulders. “I just noticed you from my window and I thought I would come and say hi,” Serenity motioned to the open window. She brushed a strand of hair out of her face.

Severynd had walked Penny all the way to her dorm, listening to her ramble about everything she saw, agreeing with every observation she made. He guided her along the sidewalk between buildings as they made their way to the dorms. After he finished his duty as a returning student, he gave a soft goodbye and handed her a slip of paper with his number on it.
"Th-That was rather nice, P-Penny. I h-hope I see you again soon. If y-you have any problems, j-just give me a call..."
With that, he made his way back towards the auditorium.[/pindent]

Severynd looked around at the swaying glass and soft light as the sun set just a little bit more. It was a lot less harsh now, but Severynd had reconjured his black glass umbrella to keep a cool shade on him. He saw Nana from his dorm laying in the grass. They never really talked much, just a subtle nod now and again, but she seemed friendly enough. He was wondering where all her friends were when he remembered she had a habit of hanging out with the upper class. She was a bit beyond her age in maturity, much like himself. Over the course of the summer, she found out she liked books as well, applying for the position of library assistant. With so many settings between them, it seemed silly to him that they didn't talk more. Cassandra, the owner of the library, told him to be a bit more confident this year so that he'd make more friends. He watched Nana talk to another girl he didn't know, and thought that this was a perfect opportunity to say hello. He took a deep breath, his chest raising high and heavily deflating as he made his way over to the hill.
"N-Nana! H-How was your summer?"
He adjusted the bandages on his face carefully as to not reveal anything beneath them, his gold eyes glancing to Serenity before settling back on Nana. Not wanting to overwhelm anyone, he kept a comfortable five foot distance as he stood on the hill with his umbrella. Severynd seemed to always wear black, but pulled it off a bit better than others. His coat was thick with a strange, beautiful black fur that wrapped around his collar. His pants were baggy to match his black leather army boots. He stood there, hoping for a response instead of the usual awkward silence.

"Yeahh...howd you do that?" She asked as she had been asleep not too long ago. She could sense and practically taste the awkwardness from her. She looked up to the window, her ears flicking up and to the side with a floomf. While on the subject, she remembered her key. She opened her mouth and spat out the thing onto her palm. It was a small cast metal key attached to a ring with a tag that listed the dorm room number as 251B. She sighed. It was close and not across the school like last year. Her ears flicked to the left as Severynd greeted her. She smiled awkwardly, sweating bullets as she didnt quite remember him. Just a few bumps in the hallway and..a chocolate milk incident. She winked and pointed fingerguns at the boy. "Heyyyy youuu..aha..my uh..summer was great..thanks for asking.." her face was flushed. What was his name? How did he know mine?! She scratched the back of her neck and shifted to the side, distancing from the female.

She hummed, deciding to properly break the social ice. "Sooo. What are you twos classes for this year? Ive got math 1st period. Hate fractions. Why have a part of a whole, yknow? Speaking...i could eat a cow." She said as she pats her stomach.

Serenity notices Severynd, “Oh hey,” she says and is about to answer Nana’s question when Nana starts talking about classes. “I have math first as well, oh, what is your name?” Serenity asks Severynd.

Severynd stiffened as he realized the position he had put Nana in, wanting to flee immediately but stomached the feeling with a heavy sigh. He could tell she barely had an idea who he was. Sometimes he forgot he was an observer, and knew a lot more about others than they knew about him. He cleared his throat, twirling the umbrella before tossing it to the side. It erupted softly into black smoke that retreated to the shadows around them. He decided it would be best not to fidget while talking to someone. He answered Serenity as he spoke.
"S-Severynd, Nana and I are d-dorm mates, remember? Also the, u-um, milk incident. Which I'm n-not made about! I just, well, I th-thought I'd finally make my acquaintance..."
Ah yes, what a great start to a new friendship. Severynd was just as flustered and embarrassed as she was. He didn't like making people uncomfortable.
"I-I'm mostly looking forward to L-Literature, books take up m-most of my time anyhow. Y-You know, if you're hungry, we c-could all go to Sunshines. I h-heard it was really good and i-inexpensive."
His mind raced awkwardly as he tried his best to keep his cool. So far he's made himself look like a stalker and pushed Nana into a corner socially. If this goes anymore south, he'd probably do them both a favor and excuse himself. First impressions are everyhing, as Cassandra always said.

“Oh, yeah I’m actually hungry, I’m Serenity by the way,” she said sticking out her hand. “Are you okay, you seem to stutter a lot?” she said and realized what a mistake that was. *What a great start to these friendships...* “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that, I just don’t have any friends and am trying to make small talk so you guys will be my friends,” she said really fast, still holding out her hand.

Nanas eyes lit up, shaking Serenitys hand with both of hers. "Nice to meetcha, girl!" Nana smiled he introduced himself as her new dormmate, her fur turning grey before her form turned into a shapeless mass that slithered underneath the gait of Severynd, rising up while taking form. Grey tentacles hugged behind him before turning yellow, fur and solidity returning to reveal arms. Her head rested under his left arm, smiling innocently. "Perfect! This means we can get to know eachother and play candyland. Ooo maybe tell stories!" Her tail fluttered, making heavy shifting sounds. Nana looked to the shadows, wondering where the umbrella went. She also wondered if all the black clothing he wears is shadow.

She looked to Serenity and furrowed her small black ball brows. "Cmon, now. We can all be pals ere. Hey, Severyn, I think that goin to Sunshines would be amazing! Your treat~." She giggled, patting his chest and walking around him. "Best not steal any of my things. If ya do..." She looked back with a threatening sharp gaze. "Ill eat you." She finished, raising both brows with a slightly smug smile.

Serenity walked with them, thinking about what they said, she quickly shut the window using telekinesis. “So I don’t know who my roommate is or if I even have one? Is that bad?” Serenity said, fiddling with the gloves on her hands. She didn’t like to not know things.

Penny was glad to have a friend as they wandered their way up to her dorm, while she wondered about everything on the way!
A little torn at saying bye to someone new so soon, she took her time to open the room. It's hard to concentrate when you're stuck feeling, y'know?
"I'm the first one in here? Hello? Anyone home?"
With no reply given, Penny had a moment, scanning the entrance, turning off the light, closing the door quietly, sneaking in.
It's easy to sneak when you don't make a floor creak.
Apparently it wasn't a trap. It really was just an empty room.
Penny took her time to appreciate the room in the near dark
*"aesthetic...noice"*.
"Okay. Eni, meeni, miny, mmmmmthat one! "
Penny got a d4 out of her bag, since random choices are the best choices. She rolled herself into the the left corner room.
"Nice one dice, strategic!"
Penny went into her new room, lights off, scan.
"Oh this bed is square. That's...oof! That's uncozy. I better find someone to help with this"
Penny takes her tablet out of her back and goes into the hallway.

"I'll call Severynd...I hope it isn't a bad time, he's probably busy too."

  • Unlike most students in the auditorium, whispering amongst themselves or zoning out entirely, Moriko was hung on her new Headmistresses every word, trying to decipher the words as she craned her neck, attempting to peer over the heads of the taller students in front of her. She squinted as she listened, considering climbing the head of the boy blocking her view.

The village's apprentice blacksmith had done the honors of driving her from her home to the school's gates; she entered the school serenaded by a cacophony of voices, from the blades of grass' whispery voices to the booms of the oak trees. She was surrounded by students, some human looking and some just as odd as her; she was led to her seat by a man much bigger than her, while the thoughts of the plants faded out and the spoken thoughts of her classmates filled in the silence.

Fighting in the cage, magic in the cage.. and so on and so forth- Moriko itched to explore the school; she'd only seen such modern infrastructure in the school's pamphlets, never in real life. Just as she began to wonder about life here, her roommates, what she wanted to learn in the time she had, she was jolted back into reality by a splash of liquid landing on her head, coating her hair in something cold and fragrant. She directed her gaze upwards where there was no apparent source of the liquid. Instinctively, she shook some of the wetness off, sprinkling her seatmates with it instead. Luckily, her yukata was unsullied. The students began to pour out of the building before she could decide her next action. Key and various assorted papers in hand, she trotted out of the building, ducking between students. Outside, a young man sat in front of a table, watching students pass by. The voices of the school's flora returned; trotting up to the table, she quickly brushed over her English before speaking, "Where," her voice was somewhat projected to speak over the noise around her, "is room? Sleeping room?" She held her key before her, pointing at the number indicating her dorm room.

Serenity noticed her as they were walking and stopped in front of her, “Do you need help finding your room?” She asked trying to be as nice as possible to the newbie. She liked to be nice, but sometimes got mean back.

Lance wasn't taking this as well as everyone else seemed to be. He wasn't accustomed to the flora and fauna of the area, setting his senses off, including his allergies- which he didn't even known he had until now- as well as a brewing headache. He usually tried to be optimistic, and not to look as intimidating as he probably did, but everyone was just so loud! Getting used to this much noise all the time was going to be an acquired taste. Still, Miss Morgan was convinced that this school would be the best for him, and she was never wrong about stuff like this, so he trusted that she was right.

She had caught him after the presentation and managed to help at least calm his headache with that spot he liked behind his horn, but unfortunately she couldn't do much about the allergies. He took some medicine he had packed, the woman ever over prepared for a trip, despite that she carried her home in a key everywhere she went. He had one too, tucked underneath his long sleeved shirt. It radiated powerful magic, not of her creation, but passed down through generations of Archmages. By time his things were all squared away, he felt better, mentally preparing himself to step outside and meet potential friends or threats, depending.

Cassandra had left him alone, hoping he could find some new people he was willing to interact with besides her. He was wandering the school hallways, trying to make sure he knew where all of his classes were before the day would begin on Monday. Monday... That was the start of the seven day week period. Right. And these would be his classes now, where he would study things like he did with his foster mother until now. She said it wouldn't quite go that way, but it would be similar enough. Unfortunately, he hadn't been able to listen very well to Mae's presentation with the overload to his senses, but not too many people were willing to get in the way of a guy his size. Not that they would have been in trouble, but a seven foot buff guy with glowing rings around his eyes was enough to drive off the more recently adjusted.

The twins made there way outside together.
Emerald felt like she could finally breath, it was so good to get out of the auditorium. There was way to many people inside there.
The twins walked over to a table that was sitting under one of the biggest trees in the court yard.

Emerald sat down slowly and then slipped of the bag that had been over her right shoulder this whole time.
She gently pulled out a book and opened it to the page she was up to. A very faint smile came to her lips as she started to read.
Jane Austen knew how to write.

Mercury waited until his sister was fine before pulling out a cigarette from the inner pocket. He pulled out his lighter from his back pocket and lit the end of the cigarette until the end was glowing red.
He slipped the lighter into his back pocket one again and then took a long drawback breath of the rich smoke. He held the smoke in his lungs for a few seconds before slowly letting the breath of smoke out into the atmosphere.
He sat up on the table and placed his feet on the other bench seat where Em wasn't sitting.
He glared out across the school grounds and pressed the end of the orange bud back to his lips and took another long breath in.
