Realistic or Modern Mission: Return of the Evening Star

Return of the Evening StarEkron, c. 712 BC

'They are coming, brother! Their weapons have broken the walls!'

'Their timing is no coincidence. They must have heard word of the state of our Lord.'

'Can he defend us?'

'I do not know. But someday, Ekron will rise again.'

France, October 24th, 2039

'Members of the accord, these are dark times in which we live. Despite the efforts of environmentalists and supers, our world has changed. Pollinators and other insects crucial to our worldwide ecosystem have declined dramatically in the last few decades. New studies estimate that bees alone may be extinct by so early as 2150, and efforts to support their survival are, regrettably, failing. But for the human race, there is yet hope. I present to you: the Hexapod Drone Beta. Self-sustaining and autonomous, but capable of remote override, it is programmed to gather pollen from flowering plants, as well as seek and dismantle animal carcasses. Mass numbers of these drones will be able to perform the crucial tasks of bees and flies that keep our ecosystem in check and our agriculture flourishing.

AEGIS Facility 108, July 13th, 2040

"Gooood morning class! Today, w-w-we are going to discussss a littlebit of ancient history!"

"Why?" a student shot back "Want to relive your glory days?" Much of the class snickered.

"Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!" said Allen. Laughter in the class died down instantly. "W-I don't get it! Now... What do you all know about a-ancient human, er, yes, ancient human history?"

Whoa, Bag made a mission! Anybody can post as whoever. Setting right now is Allen's class. I have almost no plan btw.

AEGIS 108 summer make up class

Lucas shifted in his chair. The desks at the Sparrows Point Educational Center might have originally been made for humans to sit in, but years of teenage destructive impulses and halfhearted repairs had taken their toll. The seat sagged and groaned, threatening to either detach from its associated desk entirely, or worse, fold into an even less ergonomic shape, quite possibly pinching him to death in the process. It made focusing on Mr. McNabb's weird meandering lecture/discussions a herculean task. Which was just his sort of luck. It wasn't as if focus was his strong point since his TBI. And as he wasn't having much luck learning braille, there was not a lot of point taking notes either. He'd tried recording lectures, but when he played them back... nothing but static. Naturally. What was he even doing here? Gaining his blue card seemed farther out of reach now than ever. This class, and How Not to Kill were the only two that were barely tolerable. Mostly because it was only here and there that he was not treated like an invalid. Sifu Ward didn't cut him any slack at all, which was refreshing. Ward didn't care. Whatever your problem was, he expected you to suck it up.

McNabb on the other hand... he just seemed not to notice. Which was still refreshing, if confusing.

So when the other students laughed, it stung his pride. Weird or not, teachers deserved respect. He stood up and whipped off his dark glasses, glaring toward the others crowded into the small classroom. He couldn't be sure of meeting anyone's eyes, but he had a pretty fair idea of where they were seated, between the laughter and the faint bio-electric fields around them. When it got quiet, he suddenly realized that Mr. McNabb had asked a question. Ooops.

"Um. How ancient exactly, Mr. McNabb? I think I remember hearing that Cleopatra was closer to modern times than to the building of the pyramids, so ancient is relative, right?"

He cleared his throat, nervously. Briefly, he considered sitting back down, but as he was not entirely sure which way the chair was, nor if it would hold him, he elected to remain standing. Like an idiot.

Situation Normal.

Why the fuck am I here again?
Disbelief. There was no more accurate word for the emotion Juliana had been feeling right now. Apparently, someone somewhere had decided that since facility 108's schedule had been thrown out of the window due to the recent events, they had to make up for it. How do you ask? Well, she hadn't really paid attention to that part, but rather 108 was still being rebuilt, the schedule had changed or they were just finally reforming that old building, she was here today.

July 13th, a Friday.

Superstitious, was something the Brazilian was not. In fact, if anything she only made use of things like these for more comedic purposes, you know, on the internet. Yet, when she walked into that unknown classroom this morning, she couldn't help but be a little unnerved by it. It was so dark!

The single row of windows in the furthermost end of the room was as good as nonexistent, with the sun unable to reach it due to the angle. The lights above were in an odd state of on and not on, where one had issues telling either, and did a poor job in covering up for the lack of illumination. Not the way you want to be welcomed into a new environment really.
Jú had given the room two glances and spotted just what she wanted. Then before anyone could snatch it from her, the teenager speed up like a bolt and bam! It was all hers!! The most illuminated seat was hers~! The place was still a bit too dark for her liking, but eh it was the best she could get amidst the bleak, uninviting area.

Students poured in and choose their own seats in a bit of a chaotic array, yet the teenager paid them no attention, instead focused on her spot, which was good illumination-wise but incredibly lacking in comfort. Juliana shifted in her seat here and there, trying to avoid whatever it was poking her behind through the skirt yet to no avail. Annoyed, she gave up on the endeavor sliding further, stopping at a 45-degree angle with the bottom, and using the grid under the chair right in front as her personal leg rest. As expected people avoided sitting there, unwilling to deal with this matter so early in the morning.

Just as the Brazilian had pulled her cellphone out from her purse, the teacher had shown up waaaaay too excited for the current time or environment. He had greeted the class, then declared that today's subject was ancient history. The last word acted almost like a spell, instantly prompting Juliana to turn on her data and tune out of the lesson, diving head-first into the sea of the world wide web that glimmered through the screen. Not even the hilarious joke made by one of the students was able to get through her.

...But something else did.

The girl had been excitedly journeying through her twitter dashboard, taking in every piece of information, funny videos and shitpost tweets, when fun times were interrupted by an engulfing darkness. An eclipse that had suddenly befallen the fine-picked spot. Jú jerked her head up from her device to catch sight of a student standing in the middle of the classroom, blocking just the portion of the window that directed what little of the sun rays still reached them, towards her seat. She waited for him to sit back down, assuming this situation would soon clear up, but then he never did.

Juliana let out an irritated sigh and looked up again, directing her emerald gaze at the standing moron:

"Jezz dude! Your chair is like, right behind you, just a step and half away!", she had shouted, interrupting the class as a whole, "Now will you please settle your shit down and quit blocking my damn light?!"

Allen McNabb//Lazarus Gus Gus Necessity4Fun Necessity4Fun "... ancient is relative, right?"

... this is not going the way we'd hoped. Allen grinned. Why do children have to tear apart the best laid plans? Why? That's an interesting question, we must store that in the archives for future research. Agh, but that makes one more question on the list, and no further progress on 'at what point do human children learn their own history' OR on 'what is the general understanding of human history in humans'! The sheer unproductivity!

"Welll." Allen said. "Y-yes! Rrelative is quite cor-correct, Misster Marsolet! Relative. Aanncient is rrelativve." Devoting 12 percent of their neural processing to stalling the class and the rest, as well as some extra they pulled from such background motor functions as balance, Lazarus completely failed to notice Juliana's outburst.

Hmm... Aha! Got it.

Allen got up from the floor behind his desk, and continued. "Yesss! Relative. Wh-what I would l-like you to d-do is... name an evvent in history, annnd say where you thhhink it took place, rrelative to the events o-on the b-board." He turned around, and laboriously wrote 'Pyrarnids' near the left side of the board, and 'Cleopatra' further in the right half. "G-good! Whoo else?"

Ten minutes ago...

A woman with platinum blonde hair made her way across the parking lot to the external AEGIS gym building, chewing an old stick of formerly kiwi-flavored bubble gum. She unlocked the door, stepped inside, tossed her backpack against a wall. Crossing the gymnasium floor to the storage rooms at the back of the building, she noticed her sneakers squeaking against the finished-wood floors, still shiny after all this time. She stopped, looked around the room, and her tired and sagging face stretched into a wistful smile. A lot of memories were made here. With a sigh, she continued on her way to prepare for class.

Now...

Swinging back and forth on her heels, with her hands deep in her sweatshirt pockets, she stood before a class that was now all hers.

"Welcome to Physical Discipline. I'd say?" Wolf grinned "Prepare for the worst."

"Yes, excuse me..." he began gently "The earliest of the Egyptian pyramids are estimated to have been built in the 2700s BCE, during the Egyptian Third Dynasty, and the latest in the 600s BCE. Queen Cleopatra lived from 69 to 30 BCE. Between those two periods, the Hittite Empire conquered what is now Turkey, India was settled by Indo-Europeans, China began forming complex society, the bronze age ended and the Phoenicia opened trade across the Mediterranean sea, leading to the rise of classic Greek civilization, the Assyrian, Neo-Babylonian, Median, and Persian Empires rose and..."

Manami Hamasaki

Location: Locker Room -> Gym
Condition: Out of breath
Mood: Abashed, but excited

Manami sat in the cloud of steam, breathing deeply. The heat was somewhat uncomfortable, but she was learning to tolerate it, and the moisture in the air helped to clear her head. She wanted to be clear today, and make a good impression on Sempai Wolf. While not exactly sure that teaching was her best option long term, recent events had demonstrated that, blue card graduate or not, she was not ready for vigilante work. Not yet. Even Sensei Ward's class was too emotionally fraught, bringing her demons too close to the surface. So. PD it was. Gym class.

Manami didn't mind. Gym had always been her favorite part of facility 108. The one thing that was easy for her to understand. A comforting anchor, in spite of the constant rotation of staff assigned to teach it. And now she was being given a chance. Only as an assistant, but still.

It was something.

And she needed something. Something to do. Something to focus on. Something to take her out of her thoughts and force connection with others. Connection was good. Wallowing in her thoughts was... dangerous.

She shut off the shower nozzles, one by one, enjoying the wash of cool air coming in from the locker room as the blasting jets of hot water ceased. She closed her eyes for a moment, listening to the dripping of water echoing off the tiled walls, feeling the space around her, traced in sonic outline and then reflected over and over to infinity, like parallel mirrors in a dressing room.

She opened her eyes and reached for her gill-collar, shrugging it and the backpack of filtered sea water on over her sleek green onesie. She was ready. Time for class.

She looked at the clock.

"Kujira-kuso!"

Seconds later, she burst through the doors to the gym and skidded to a stop in an expanding cloud of steam. Trying not to pant, having bounded up the stairs four or five at a time, she gasped out:

"Sempai Wolf! I am here to help you teach! Sorry to be late... I am the worst!"

Condition: Roughly two inches tall.
Mood: Sheepish, but still trying.

Lucas flinched at the unfamiliar female voice shouting at him, his eyes flicking uselessly in the girl's general direction. He wondered if she was pretty. She sounded pretty. Imperious and rude usually went hand in hand with pretty, he'd noticed, back when he could still see. He muttered a barely audible "Sorry, I didn't know I was blocking your light." and slunk back to his seat, finding it more by dint of luck than from her directions, feeling his way with hands and feet. His face was burning hot as he folded himself awkwardly back into his chair's rickety embrace.

He tried to distract himself by listening to McNabb's question, but his speaking style was hard to follow, and social implosion was hard to put out of mind. By the time he had himself nearly under control other students were answering in staggering detail. From the answers, he was getting the gist of what the question had been. Hoping to keep the momentum going, and praying to god that he wouldn't make a complete fool of himself, he raised his hand, blurting out, "Wasn't Cleopatra around the same time as the Roman Empire? Well, like the first one? Or the middle one? Or something? Didn't Julius Caesar make a deal with her, or betray her or something?"

Maybe he was thinking of an old movie?

Ten minutes ago...

"We have a new Physical Discipline teacher for the summer, daddy!"

"..."

"Her name's Wolf. I heard she worked here before, but she left after they blew up the Political Powers class, I think."

"Mm, don't do that..."

Catheryn rolled her eyes. "Daddy, how would I even blow up a class? That happened in, like, January. Don't you remember when the bridge was closed for repairs?"

"Sure thing, darling." Catheryn's father pulled into the 108 parking lot and Catheryn hopped out enthusiastically, causing the pavement to crack on impact. "Alright, have a good day at school!" Her father barely finished before he pulled off and headed off to work.

Catheryn waved until he was out of sight, and took a couple of deep breaths. She could feel this was going to be a good day. A really good day. She turned, and headed into the Physical Discipline building.

Now...

Catheryn stood with the rest of the Physical Discipline class, in a smart-looking tracksuit, doing a few stretches. Stretching was different since her powers manifested. She weighed so much more now, but she was also a little bit stronger? Not enough to cover the difference. She still felt like she'd inherited a whole new body to grow into.

"Welcome to Physical Discipline. I'd say? Prepare for the worst." Her instructor broke the susurrus in the gymnasium space.

Catheryn sprang up and saluted, beaming with whimsy. "Yes ma'am, preparing for the worst, ma'am!" She liked gym classes; people didn't tend to expect her to be so quiet.

Suddenly, the door sprang open and the T.A bounded in. "Sempai Wolf! I am here to help you teach! Sorry to be late... I am the worst!"

"... I was not prepared." Catheryn said under her breath. She hoped The Worst was not considered shellfish, because if she had an allergic reaction to her T.A it was not going to be a really good day.

Ken sat in the back of the E.C classroom, using his illusion to appear normal. He couldn't really think of anything he knew about ancient history, and the kid at the front of the class seemed to have the topic covered, so he resolved to just sit out the rest of the class and listen for something useful. So far, there wasn't much, which was pretty disappointing. Really, why waste time here?

But after Lucas mentioned something about pyramids, the girl over at the side of the room had shouted about not having enough light. That was something he could set his mind to. He reached out a hand to her and increased her perception of the brightness in the room. Then he realized he had dropped his first illusion, and now sat revealed for the red-skinned, big-toothed... well, the demon that he really was.

At this point, though, he had already committed to the illusion of brightness. If he switched back now, he could look normal, but he would also look stupid. He buckled down, maintained the illusion for Juliana, and just hoped nobody would look back at him for the rest of class. Thinking about what might happen if they did, he shrank back in his seat.

This was going to be a long class.

Oh. Uhhh, this is a bit, awkward...
While wandering through the rebuilt corridors of facility 108, it was really hard to not enter a reflective state, to look back on how much things had changed in such a short time, well, short when one put a couple months against the past 15 years of his life. Living on Anneliese's apartment wasn't bad, just a lot of adaptation. For starters, it was small. Smaller than he was used to at least, rooms without superfluous space in them, almost no echo and even the ceiling stood lower than the household's. Thankfully, Kendrick wasn't claustrophobic or that would have been the worst time possible to discover it!

The first few weeks had been, difficult.

In the start, the teenager would wake up in the morning into a room he didn't know and promptly sit up in alarm until he could recall the current circumstances. Maybe if he had been able to organize his belongings in a more familiar fashion in the new bedroom it wouldn't have come across as such a shock but the lack of space and shelves made it into an impossible task. Even once all of the space had been properly filled up some of the cardboard boxes had remained in the corner, filled with toys that no longer had shelves to be placed onto.
The limited space, however, hadn't been all bad, inspiring the need for a 'spring cleaning'. With more time than ever, Kendrick had discovered the magical world of digital shopping, or in this case, digital selling! The target? A collection of watches that got few to no use whatsoever. For some reason, rich people really like to gift those, which, to him, never made any sense since everyone had phones these days that could tell the hour... As result, he had amassed a massive drawer of them over time. So he had announced them online in case some watch enthusiasts or whatever showed up. The response had been quicker and bigger than expected, apparently, some of these weren't produced anymore and were in really good shape? In the span of a month, the box of watches had dwindled by half and Kendrick found himself with about 50 thousand dollars extra.

Other problems that had emerged were due to schedules, since the boy was used to waking up by 6 AM every single day and being in bed at 9 PM, which was very unusual; The almost infinite free time, which had turned out to be oddly stressful because he honestly didn't know what to do with it; And some more, personal matters, such as how Kendrick would expect to be lectured every time he made a mistake. For example, being in the kitchen had been a first for him, and though it was easy to grasp what the devices in it did, learning how to effectively use them took a scientist's approach and experimenting.
One morning he had tried making pancakes following a recipe from the internet. Everything had been done just as it was written, except for the fact that the pan he had chosen wasn't ideal for the task... Informing Anneliese what had happened to her pan had taken quite an effort to do.

By now though, a lot of these had been smoothed over, others he had just gotten used to, --even if Kendrick still missed having a piano to his disposition--, and some things have been talked out. If anything, he felt a lot... lighter. At the same time that having the freedom to spend his time willy-nilly was scary, having that same freedom to be exactly who he wanted to be was exceptionally refreshing. Of course, old habits died hard and such a big change would take time, but! He could go gradually dropping the act now, into a more relaxed version of himself. Sometimes just the prospect of it could almost bring him to joyful tears...

However, the teenager once again fell into the dilemma of time. Without enough places to go, for lack of knowing them, Kendrick had gotten used to come to 108 with Anneliese every morning and then, just stay in a corner of her office all day. It was odd, but even with everything that had happened the facility just felt, safe and familiar. The only thing that had remained a constant in his daily-life and even if it had been attacked, destroyed and now reconstructed it just felt like his place. A beacon of order in the messy chaos that both in life and his own mind were lately... Questions that piled up overnight and we're yet to be answered. He was confused and lost, yet also relieved and hopeful. What a weird combination of feelings it was.

And then without rhyme nor reason, he had decided to wander out. Grab his belongings, let Anneliese know to expect him back once the bell indicating the end of classes rang and walked outside, just some walk without destination in the company of Ted... That was, until he had passed near the Gym and heard a voice he had not expected to. Wolfie was back?! What- Had he ever received such an information? He could not recall it, but the day he turned away from greeting his old friend would be the day Hell would freeze over! And it would not be today!

"Hey! If it isn't my favorite rubber strap! Finally decided to show up again, huh? Oh well, better latex than never~", Kendrick had announced loudly with a grin, having stood right beside the door with his arms crossed, once he had stepped inside the room, "Do you mind if I sit and watch your class today? I swear to not get in the way, I've just missed th-"

That's when someone slammed the door open out of nowhere only stopping after a foot or so further in. Both the surprise and the cloud of steam slowly dissipated and the teenager had nearly choked on his next words once he had seen who it was! Ted, how had been sitting on his shoulder all this time had also reacted, covering its mouth with its limbs in response.

Of course, he did recall something about Manami signing up for being a T.A. and he would have checked on her earlier in other circumstances but... Moving out, organizing all his things, getting used to living a whole different new place... He hadn't been able to keep track and the thought had gotten lost somewhere in the ocean of all of the other ones... He had so many questions for her, wanted to know where she had been, if she felt any better, maybe give her an update on his own situation if she would listen! But then again... Last time they had been together a plethora of things had gone wrong and Kendrick wasn't really sure of how to even begin interacting with her once more.

Should he stay quiet? Try and turn around? Wait, who was he kidding, it was too late to turn around... Also, this was Manami. No matter what she had been through, she was still the same cheerful, kind-hearted and inspiring Manami he knew, right? So, staying quiet? No... That didn't seem right either. If he wanted to save this friendship, he would need to get more assertive. Come on, it's not like there's anything stopping him this time:

"It's good to see you too, Manami. Always in high spirits, I see."

Well, an effort had been made. At least that much could be considered true...

Wolf rolled her eyes at Kendrick's attempts at puns and grinned. "Course you can, kid!" She stretched an arm out to him for a fist bump. "Hell, I might throw you in with the lesson plan. If you're not against unpaid teaching assistance." Along with the rest of the room, she then turned to look at Manami.

She held up a hand, shaking her head and smiling a little, so as to say there was no need for apology. She turned back to her class and looked them over. The short one was bubbly, not troublesome, but might get on her nerves after a couple days. The other girl, well... she seemed a little like she might turn out to be a basket case. Never thought she'd have an issue with those, but after Travis... Could never tell. The rest of the class hadn't piped up yet. They seemed very manageable, so far.

"Alright class. Who's ready..." an ominous look flashed through Wolf's eyes "... for a relay race?"

As she continued her power-walk into the room, she suddenly caught sight of Kendrick by the main entrance. The shock of recognition and pleased surprise shot through her brain, raising both her arms in an almost spasmodic reflex, attempting something between an awkward two handed wave and a vague invitation to hug.

Kendi doesn't hug

"Kendi-kun, I am so hap-" she began, twisting slightly at the waist to face him. This proved to be a tactical error as her feet kept walking toward Wolf. The twist of the hips made the one foot veer off course slightly, tripping up the other. Still unused to the extra weight of the gill collar and backpack filter, she sprawled full on her face, skidding to a stop just shy of the painted court lines.

There is the sound of roaring fire and pounding rain. Hooks bite into her flesh.
She could get up. But really, what would be the point?
There is nothing now.
No more.
Please?

She lurched to her feet, pausing to carefully make unnecessary adjustments to the gill collar, covering for avoiding looking at anyone while she recovered her composure.

Her gills fluttered with the effort, though hidden by the thick green glass of the circulation tubes.

"This is now." she thought fiercely. "That day is gone. The hurt cannot touch me today. Kendi is my friend and I am happy to see him. Sempai needs me. Keep. It. Together!"

Physically unable to produce tears, she had no need for the tell-tale human gesture of wiping the eyes. She could fake the rest, well enough to fool the students at least. She plastered on her toothiest grin and pressed her palms to her cheeks. "Oh my gosh, I am so clumsy on land! Sorry again Sempai! Kendi, it has been for-EV-er and EV-er! It is so good to see you! And Teddy too!" She hurried over to her friend heedless of his slightly creepy teddy-bear, hands out for clasping in a hearty, and yet perfectly proper, double handshake.

Alexander Clarke Gus Gus Necessity4Fun Necessity4Fun "Alright son, ready for your first day?" Alexander's father adjusted his shirt.

"I think so."

"You're probably gonna see some animals out there. What are you gonna do with them?"

"Not hunt."

His father nodded "That's right. Now, if there are too many people around you and you need to be alone, what do you do?"

"... Make friends with them?"

"Well... I guess that might work, yeah."

"Are you sure I can't take Bulldog with me?"

He shook his head. "Absolutely sure. People in cities don't walk around with swords. Now remember-" he put his hand on Alexander's shoulder, and Alexander helpfully leaned down to eye-level for him. "- this is your education. Spend your time wisely at that facility, and learn as much as you can. The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it."

"I promise, dad." Alexander smiled. "I'm gonna learn everything there is to know about being a superhero!"

Alexander sat at his desk in Emotional Composure, extremely confused. He didn't imagine being a superhero was going to involve... ancient history?

He was glad of the dim lighting in the classroom, which let him take his sunglasses off. The desks were pretty comfortable. The people seemed nice... mostly. But the class? He had no idea who or what half of the things the others were talking about could possibly be, and he certainly didn't know what it had to do with saving people, or composing your emotions.

He had heard some of the terms from his dad before. Egyptians, Cleopatra, pyramids, Phoenicians, Mediterranean, Greek... but he couldn't say that he remembered much about what any of them were. Maybe they had something to do with some of the other stuff he used to go on about.

"Uhh, pardon me? Would Emerson have been... before, or after Cleopatra?"

Deja arrived on time to Physical Discipline class and warmed herself up as the instructors and students spoke. Mid-lunge, she furrowed her brow. "A relay race?" This was definitely her strong suit. But then, she wondered how a relay race would be different to train supers for their blue cards. It could be fun. But it could be dangerous. She looked around for others who might not be able to handle it.

Aaron Mallory
miniAaron.png
Location: Behind the school
Mood: Glad to be back

Aaron stepped back, admiring his handiwork. Having salvaged a section of the old Key bridge from the bottom of the bay, he had set up a classic collateral damage scenario. An armored car appeared to teeter on the brink of falling over the edge, although actually carefully wedged against the guard rail it had 'crashed' through. There were also concealed safety cables to prevent it actually tumbling over the five foot drop, but then the students weren't to know that. The doors of the armored car were wedged shut by the tangled wreckage of the guard rail, the rear door was locked, and the two 'guards' were designated unconscious. There were also four other mannequins scattered about the 20 foot section of bridge to be rescued.

The game, which he would explain just as soon as students started showing up, was one of high stakes adversarial Jenga. As the designated super villain, he would be removing support pillars from the bridge at three minute intervals with prepared monologues in between that he had timed out for fairness. He estimated that two of the six pillars could be removed before it became significantly unstable and critical after three. If he got to the fourth pillar before they had effected a rescue, and/or found a way to stabilize the bridge, he would call time and they would go back to the classroom for analysis.

This was going to be a great class! Best yet.

He just needed students. Any minute now, they'd find the note he left for them in the classroom and....

Oh shit.

As quickly as he could manage, he started the long walk back to his classroom.

Stopping short in her approach to Kendrick, Manami cocked her head toward Wolf's murmured request, her brow furrowed for a a moment. As understanding dawned, she smiled a sunny grin.

"Sempai, I would be very happy to compete in the race, if you think that would be fair to the students?" Her grin turned mischievous. "Unless, perhaps, Kendi-kun would like to put on a jersey? For old time's sake?" She winked broadly in her friend's direction. "We could be team blue again!"

Her smile falters slightly as a memory niggles at the back of her mind.

When had they been team blue before? Was she muddling a memory and a dream? She seems to recall a blue sweater. For a flag? And there had been snow...

Miia M. Makela
Miia.jpg

Miia was irritated. This, in and of itself, was hardly new. What was unusual about this particular case was that she was, perhaps for the first time in her life, irritated with herself.

It wasn't as if it was her fault or anything. Not like she had done anything she hadn't done a thousand times before. But somehow, for some reason, for the last few months at least, she'd been off her game. She wasn't the worlds most observant person by any stretch. At a certain point however, the sheer consistency of the pattern had become hard to miss: other people's expectations were beginning to matter to her.

She didn't like that. Not one little bit.

The first example of this she could recall was test day where she'd totally lost her cool on the obstacle course. Mostly just because some prissy little rich boy had yelled at her, as far as she could tell. Why that should have mattered any more than the last person who'd yelled at her for doing her thing was totally beyond her. Next was when the rest of her team got their blue cards and SHE was held back for supplementary classes in emotional composure of all things. She lost it again. Right in the middle of the ceremony. Full on meltdown over a card she didn't even really want. Then the knights had attacked, and that would have been bad enough, but then that rich boy had snapped at her for being insensitive or something about his stupid fish friend! It really got under her skin too! She went out clubbing that night which never fails to cheer her up, but it didn't work. A string of no strings one night stands didn't help either. One of her paramours was really upset that she didn't want to see him a second time, and she actually felt bad for him. He looked so sad about it, it seriously bummed her out. Which was all the more reason not to see him again.

That it was now high summer and this was still going on was as unbelievable as it was unacceptable.

Take this morning for instance. She'd been out late partying, slept late, and woke up hung over. Halfway through her second cup of coffee, she realized she was missing EC class with creepy McNeepy. But, and this was the mysterious part: she found herself rushing to school to get her attendance credit for the day.

Why?

Arriving at the school, she decided she was damned if she was going to do a walk of shame past the secretary, and decided to try out the new virtual pole-vault trick she'd been practicing. She was pretty sure the EC class was the window in the middle, and it was open, she got a good running start at the building and just before impact with the wall, shifted her perspective on things, turning all that speed into height. She grabbed the windowsill, flipped herself into the room and stared at a group of kids she was reasonably sure she'd never met before. They looked at her with mild curiosity. Students arriving via the window was hardly worthy of comment at 108.

Mildly flustered, she picked herself up off the floor and asked, "Sorry, isn't this supposed to be 'emotional composure class?'"

After a beat, one of them answered her, "No this is supposed to be 'Collateral Damage & You' but so far Mr. Mallory hasn't showed up. I think EC is down the hall?"

A few minutes ago...

Aaliyah lay across the teacher's desk at the head of the Collateral Damage classroom, legs crossed, propped up by one arm clutching the edge. With her other arm, she could just comfortably reach the whiteboard to write with the blue marker she'd been able to find. "No H..." She drew the left arm of a stick figure and wrote a large, satisfied H next to the letters E, T, and O near the bottom of the board. Above it: A _ _ _ A _ _. She turned her head back to the class and grinned. "'Nother guess?"

Alice frowned. "Is it something in Spanish? 'Cause you told me it wasn't in Spanish an' if you're just messing-"

"UuuuuuGGGHHH..." Aaliyah interrupted. "Pinche azaroso que tefolleunpez it's not in Spanish, for cryin' out loud! I'm not gonna say it again..."

After a moment's hesitation, Alice readjusted herself against the back desk and spoke "... I?" The accused gained a full set of arms as I joined the list of wrong guesses. "Dammit..."

"What about y'all? Lonnie? Liz? Got any guesses?" Aaliyah gestured to the rest of the class: London, who sat at the desk nearest the back corner, writing on a slip of paper that they quickly pulled out of sight when addressed. Elizabeth, who sat reading Lord of the Flies with her back to the half of the window that was closed, glanced up before returning to her book.

Malik, who sat between Elizabeth and Aaliyah with his hands flat on his desk, had been frowning. At the query, he frowned a little lower. "Are you sure you ought to be doing this? Our teacher should be back at any moment, and if he finds you sitting on his desk, writing on his board..."

"It'll take us a little less than two seconds to wipe this off and get to our seats. C'mon, it's no big deal! I hear you're a genius or somethin'..."

Malik raised an eyebrow. "A... genius? Wh-who said that?"

"Ohmygod, kid, guess a freakin' letter!"

Turning to look at the board, Malik planted his right elbow on his desk and rested his head on his thumb and index finger. After a minute, he said "N." There was no N in the word.

"Wonderful. He's on his last leg and we still only know one letter." Alice glared at Malik. Malik just smiled.

"I've got it." He was about to say what it was that he had when someone jumped in through the open window.

"Sorry, isn't this supposed to be 'emotional composure class?'" she asked.

No answer was forthcoming from the five. Finally, London spoke up. "No, this is supposed to be 'Collateral Damage & You', but so far Mr. Mallory hasn't showed up. I think EC is down the hall?"

"... I... I forgot what I was going to say?" Malik murmured, his face stuck in a stupefied arrangement.

Now, that's something interesting! Finally!!
Glaring daggers at the boy standing in the middle classroom, Juliana had been intent on keeping her gaze locked right there, until her demands had been attended. Obviously, the ever-rolling world of the internet waited for nobody, and perhaps luckily for the other who was stumbling to comply, the girl's attention had been drawn back at the screen before any more rude commentaries could have been made.

Lost in the vast world of social media, the Brazilian had once more closed herself to the immediate surroundings. Oblivious to the blindness of her 'fellow' student, indifferent to the lesson that was being given, Juliana swiped up her Twitter dashboard without a care in the world, more preoccupied with the current digital trends, pointless celebrity babble and only once in a while some actual important news, though not always given the deserved attention. In the background, students threw their answers at the teacher, making room for noisy chatter that was starting to get hard to completely ignore... Urrrrgh damned extroverted nature! The prospect of chatting allured her as if it would be fun, YET she didn't want to fucking leaRN HISTORY! Screw that!!

Not giving in so easily and grinding her teeth tighter together, she tried to focus harder on the words in the screen. The girl had even turned away from the ample space of the classroom, siding sideways on her seat, attempting to 'build' an enclosed environment, just her phone and her. And maybe, maaaaaybe it had been working, that is, until someone decided to light up the whole world.

"Hah!!", she had let up with a surprised gasp, releasing all of the tension she had been holding on her feeble attempt to concentrate. Juliana blinked confused and looked around a couple of times before she finally glanced at the ceiling with contempt, "Oh, so now you work, don't ya?! ...Stupid classroom lights."

After huffing in anger, once or twice, the teenager had been ready to get back at her herculean task of ignoring the EC class but then something else, a shape in crimson that stood out of place. Focus lost for... who knows how many times now, Jú had discreetly looked back towards the direction her air-head memory was pointing and lo and behold, there was a demon sitting at a chair with the rest of the students... Or was it an Oni? Jas would definitely give her a big lecture on the matter if she was around... That girl's obsession with Oriental culture was... something. Though Juliana could never follow along, guess she was just not interested on the subject.

Avoiding falling into a mental debate over the proper name of... the creature she was seeing, the teenager had covertly closed Twitter and accessed the shortcut for the camera. She set it up straight, and slowly keep raising the device until the mysterious student and newfound subject of curiosity was in the frame. The first photo was just that, silent and discreet, but of course, that was not enough for someone like Juliana, no she had to keep full documentation of the fact. Another tap to the screen and the camera had been swapped to video-recording mode. With the huge grin of someone who was clearly up to no good adorning her face, the girl started up the recording and out of nowhere waved at the entire class:

"Hey everyone! Say cheese~!!"

It was a master technique that hardly ever failed to get the target to turn at the camera. Gotcha~~

Ken, his hands folded in his lap and shoulders hunched up as if to cover himself, had been trying not to glance at Juliana and focus on the lesson. But, like the rest of the class, he instinctively took the bait and looked up just as she snapped a picture of him. He froze when he realized what she had done, and put his disguise back on to appear normal. To Juliana, the classroom faded into its real shade.

With as much confidence as he could dredge out of his adrenaline, he spoke out. "P-pleashe don't take photosh of me wivout my permission."

I highly doubt it, but if they did it would be truly hilarious!
"Unpaid T.A. work?", Kendrick had pretended to stop in thought for a minute, before continuing, "Well, nothing prevents me from volunteering myself so...", dropping the line with a nonchalant shrug. "Nothing against Anneliese, or her office, but I don't think I can bear spending another day fighting this uhh... game that I play without going mad."

His expression was gentle and apologetic, yet it covered up a deep melancholy over the lack of places to go. Heck, It's like he couldn't even consider himself a native of the place, nothing but vague ideas of where one could find certain stores, but no knowledge of them in person... What kind of feeling was that the subject evoked? Was it shame? For something he had no control over? He had known for a while now, that the hand life had thrown his way had robbed something important, something that remained missing. For he was a boy playing an adult's part, never being given time nor space to be either properly, and how could you fix something like that? Make up for all the lost years? Was it even accomplishable?

The more time Kendrick spent near others, the more he felt like an outsider, almost like dwelling in a different dimension than the rest of his peers. He hated it, that looming feeling of being alone even when surrounded by others. He wished it would just, disappear and quit being a bother. But that would be some quite improbable wishful thinking.

Luckily, Manami's attempt at a greeting had interrupted his thoughts before they could wander even further. From the blank distracted expression he had been wearing, Kendrick was startled into one of mild confusion, unsure of what exactly her movements were meant to be, yet at the same time amused by his friend being her usual, delightfully wacky self... Annnd then she had fallen:

"Ahh. Are-... Are you okay?", the phrase had been uttered soft and awkwardly, almost as if it didn't want to be. Perhaps if both their situations were different he would have made a little joke about it, but as things were currently, treading as if on a trail of eggshells seemed like the best alternative.
At least for now.

He had observed her attentively, watching with concerned eyes as the girl got back up and put the equipment she was wearing properly in place. Ted had been sent over, jumping down from its owner's shoulder and approaching Manami very akin to a curious child then following her back to stand beside Kendrick. The greeting was cheerful and heartwarming as they always were, which put the boy a little at ease. In front of him stood the usual Manami with her usual bubbliness, yet it would be foolish to take it as granted, to assume everything was fine especially after... the recent events.

Having played similar games before, the boy decided to play along. He needed more data before he could start making hypothesis, but if there was one thing he had experience in it was hiding his true intentions and feelings. He'd be able to tell it for sure eventually, the teenager was certain of it:

"I'm sure you're not the only one falling this often, there are a lot of clumsy people around", he had started it in a gentle tone while accepting the handshake, "Oh, hahaha... Yeah, things have changed... A lot! So I've been really busy organizing things and correcting some loose ends here and there. It's uhh. It's a bit of a long story, very long story.", he had looked away for a split-second, uncomfortable with the subject or rather multiple subjects that pertained to the explanation.
Then to both compose himself and press her own a little, he repeated, "Are you sure that you're okay? That was quite the fall."

That was when Wolf approached as well, whispering something to Manami. Deeming it something important and class-related, Kendrick had looked elsewhere grasping the reactions of the students to the relay race announcement. This was odd. Two months ago he would have been standing with them too, though a lot less lively, and now he was seeing things from the opposite side. They were surprisingly not that different, actually...

"Unless, perhaps, Kendi-kun would like to put on a jersey?", Manami's voice uttering his given nickname had drawn his attention back to the two, "For old time's sake?"

"Team Blue? Ah, you mean the catch the flag game?", he threw the question at her, hoping to make some time to think things through for a bit.

Well, that had been rather quick. Manami had put him on the spot, the one person he had a really hard time saying 'no' to. It's not that he didn't want to participate, but considering the previously given instructions and the numbers, something didn't quite add up:

"Look, I'd love to, but if I join Blue with you Red is going to be short a member. Including me, we would have 7 people in total for the relay race, assuming that Wolfie as the instructor and observer will not participate in it. That gives us two groups of three integrands each, plus an extra... Meaning, I don't think we can go through with this without making the teams unbalanced."

He thought in silence about it a little longer and finally concluded, trying not to laugh at the idea:

"Unless, by any chance, a late student decides to step through the door right now..."

Allen McNabb//Lazarus Gus Gus Necessity4Fun Necessity4Fun "Mmmiss Juliannna Alavarenga!" Allen stared unnervingly at Juliana as his marker hand trailed off, leaving a black streak down the whiteboard. "W-I know I hhave t-told you before that cellular phonesss are not p-permitted in class! Sssince this is your first o-offense today, you'll only hhhave your name written on the b-b-board. Thisss is your f-first warning. A-a-and we'll have to a-ask that you p-p-put your cccellular phone in y-your bag, or in your d-d-desk."

Allen turned and wrote a marginally legible 'Juliana Alvarenga' on the top right corner of the board. When he had finished, he turned back. "Yyyyou know what hhappens if y-you have it out a-a-again..." He winked with embarrassing conspicuity.
