Futuristic Menagerie (Cryptid/Kaiju Battle RP) ((OPEN))

So I was watching Netflix’s newest anthology series, Love, Death + Robots (amazing series, highly recommend) and the first episode is about a Kaiju fighting circuit where humans mind meld with alien beasts in battles to the death. A very cool premise that I think could make an awesome RP.

So here’s the concept: Thousands of years in the future, humanity has reached the cosmos to discover the universe has alien life, but few are humanoid. So humans enslave the aliens and use them in gladiatorial combat for profit and glory. There’s two types of beast fighting circuits: Lightweight division for aliens that don’t get bigger than a trailer and Heavyweight division for full on Kaiju Godzilla tier aliens that require entire worlds as battlegrounds. Most of humanity approves of it but there are alien rights groups that seek to oppose the practice. They send undercover agents to fight for captive aliens and free them in “Splice fights”, battles to the death but the winner gets cloning/gene splicing rights to the loser’s Beast.

What do you think?

This looks amazing. What level of detail will this be?

When it comes to the monster battles and venues, how much freedom do the game makers and handlers have? Are there different types of fights that occur (such as 1v1, Team Battles, Free for Alls, Last one Standings, etc), and are there set rules that Handlers have to abide by, such as any restrictions during fights, etc?

Also, do the losers who suffer extreme injuries die a permanent death or can they be put back together after the battle is over? Where do the aliens go or what do they do when not duking it out in an arena?

Very good questions that I have been working on this week.

In Menagerie, most of the circuit fights are 1v1. There are Duo circuits and free for all events that occur during the season, but most of the media coverage focuses on the official circuit due to corporate interests. There’s also a “Horde Mode” event that happens near the end of the season where the Lightweight division’s best Cryptids go against one Heavyweight Kaiju. You know the question of which would you rather fight, one horse sized duck or 100 duck sized horses? Imagine that but the horse and ducks are spewing fire and acid spit at each other.

Heavyweight division only has two modes of battle: 1v1 and King of Beasts. KoB fights are massive bouts between five Kaiju. Last one standing wins. There’s no official teams in KoB but many handlers opt to team up to knock out bigger competition.

Arenas are often digital constructs to allow varied venues, themes, gravities and battle strategies. Battleworlds, massive planet wide arenas designed specifically for Kaiju, are designed with terra forming technologies to simulate countless worlds, sometimes even in mid fight. A lot of tourism for planets come from being featured as a Battleworld.

Restrictions on fights depend on whether it’s an official game, a Splice Fight or an Underground bout. The Official Circuit has three main rules:

1. Fights must be remain in the chosen arena’s ring.
2. Fights must be between two sponsored creatures.
3. Fights must be televised on all affiliate media stations.

Outside of that, the Handler’s adhere to the venue’s general rules of combat. Victory is often given by incap or ring out, although some venues can choose to determine a winner by audience vote if the creatures are both incapacitated simultaneously.

Splice Fights lean more into the bloodsport side of the equation. In the official circuit, they’re special events between corporations looking to add new blood to their roster, emphasis on blood. Splice Fights have only one term of victory: Death. They also assure permanent employment by burning the corpse of the loser after harvesting a sizable sample of DNA. The losing handler also signs over the rights to their creature’s breeding grounds or genetic research. The corporation will often employ the handler if they think it’s a good investment, though the handler will have to abide by the corporate rules.

In the Underground, they abide by the Splice fight rules. Although, they allow the creatures to eat the loser and “harvest” the remains the more natural way as a show of humiliation. Underground bouts are generally fought in abandoned areas like subways or caves or even space stations. They’re a lot more dangerous and there’s no reimbursement on DNA if your creature dies of explosive decompression.

If a creature dies from injuries during an official bout, they are often cloned and get right back into the fray. Injured but not killed creatures are just fixed up with cloned limbs or grafts, depending on the injury.

As for life outside the ring, Cryptids are often treated like pets. They walk, train, hunt and keep their handlers company. Corporate Cryptids are subject to strict training regimes and round the clock genetic fortification. Handler bonding is kept to a minimum and under no circumstances is a Cryptid allowed to leave a corporate facility outside of press tours.

Unfortunately, Kaiju don’t have that luxury. As they are far too big and dangerous for recreational life, Kaiju only know battle. After every fight, the Kaiju are flash frozen, disassembled and loaded up on freighter ships to be transported to the next Battleworld where they are reassembled and fight. There’s no retirement either. A Kaiju that grows too old is exterminated and reborn anew. There’s some rumors of a planet in Dark Space where Kaiju live in peace, but all expeditions to find such a place are lost. Whether that means it does exist, remains to be seen....
