Tae Kwon Do
Tae Kwan (sic) Do, loosely translated as the "way of hands and feet," is studied in many of the world's military organizations. The idea is to efficiently combine kicks and punches for the best possible attack form. Probably the most kick-oriented of all the martial arts.
A master will attack quickly, preferably with some kind of flying jump kick. If the opponent is able to avoid or counter the kicks, then the second approach will be to move in with a volley of punches and short-range kicks.
Schools of Tae Kwon Do are found all over the world. While South Koreans have widely spread the form in the U.S. and Canada, so have the North Koreans taught it in the U.S.S..R. and Eastern Europe.
(GM Note: From Ninjas and Superspies, Page 104. I disagree with the book in that Tae Kwon Do is a form of Karate; it is not. Karate is Okinawan in origin while Tae Kwon Do is Korean, having Hwarang-Do as its ancient predecessor. Also, in today's times Tae Kwon Do schools in the U.S. are many and varied; some are "McDojos" which are not practical in street combat, while the rarer form of Tae Kwon Do schools are hardcore, hard-hitting schools - a character in this game is expected to have learned in the latter.)

This is an excellent exhibition between a Tae Kwon Do artist and a Muay Thai practitioner! Notice the smoothness of the Tae Kwon Do fighter's kicks, combinations, and his superb balance. Also note that he tends to drop his guard to his chest while the Muay Thai practitioner protects his head most of the time. These two guys are clearly buddies having a good time and they're fun to watch. =)

"Tae Kwon Do vs. Muay Thai 2014"

There is an undeniable athletic ability to the sport-style of Tae Kwon Do. It's flashy, acrobatic, and great for entertainment value. These folks work hard in practicing forms and perfecting techniques for the camera that tend to wow the (usually non-martially-trained) audiences of the world.

Then there are the Tae Kwon Do artists who don't give a damn about plastic trophies or board-breaking or (for the most part) the wow of the audience. These people live on something else - fighting. They are willing to get into the ring with a complete stranger, also skilled in their combative style, to see which one of them gets to walk out again.

Watch for the incredibly-timed Axe Kick at 1:36 and the terrific side kick/back side kick combination at 2:36 (or in our game, Side Kick followed by a Reverse Turning Kick).

However, many TKD specialists focus on striking and lack a ground game. Many TKD practitioners are so into what they do well that they do not focus in fighting areas (distances) they lack. This next one is in a spoiler. This one's bad (skip this video if you're squeamish). It shows why having grappling skills is important (and how having a lack of them can leave you wide open for something like this).
