Magical Girls 101
Nobody knows what factors determine whether or not a girl will become a magical girl, though it does seem to have a tendency to run in families. What is known is that every magical girl first finds out about their powers via the appearance of their Spiritstone, a small, glowing crystal often shaped like something reminiscent of the girl's power; i.e. a magical girl with water powers might have a Spiritstone shaped like a water droplet. The Spiritstone is the source of magical girl's powers: no Spiritstone = mere mortal.
Post-schooling careers of magical girls are wide and varied. The majority join the Monster Task Force, which deals with monsters and other supernatural events worldwide. Others go into law enforcement or private security, and a surprising number hang up their Spiritstones and fade back into mundane society, although these are often looked down upon by their fellow graduates.
The School
Sakura High is a school located in rural Japan, although it caters to students and faculty of all nations. The school has all the amenities of a typical boarding school: dorms, gym, courtyard, swimming pool (indoor), etc. The school also contains a small museum open to the public which details the history of magical girls, as well as a place to house the Spiritstones of fallen heroes. The school faculty are all magical girls, although most are retired from field work.
The program is 3 years. The first year is strictly classwork, involving training in powers and mundane subjects (and the latter is considered top-notch). Second year is when the students get assigned into teams and get sent on missions to hunt monsters, as well as continuing their schooling and training. Third year is a continuation of the second, culminating in a secret test known as The Crucible.
Monsters
Usually, the first time the students and faculty hear about a certain monster is reports of strange goings-on and missing persons. If they're lucky, they might have an eyewitness to provide detailed information. Either way, the faculty determines a rough power level for the monster, assigns it to one of five classes based on their assessment, and picks a team to deal with the threat.
All monsters seem to be powered by Darkstones, which, as the name implies, are made of black material similar to that of the Spiritstones. This Darkstone will be left behind when the monster is defeated, and through a special ritual, a magical girl can drain the Darkstone of its energy to unlock new abilities or power up existing ones.
D-Class monsters (Mooks)- Cannon fodder, essentially. One trainee magical girl can easily rip through two or three without so much as breaking a sweat. Problem is, they tend to come in numbers.
C-Class monsters (Knights)- Quite capable of threatening a lone trainee, Knights are still fairly easy prey for a team of magical girls.
B-Class monsters (Titans)- Very dangerous to a team, and the odds will be stacked against a lone magical girl.
A-Class monsters (Nightmares)- More than a match for most teams, and all but impossible to solo. Those precious few trainees who have pulled off such a feat are usually treated as heroes upon their return... before getting an ass-chewing in private from the staff for their death wish.
X-Class monsters- Rarely, when a magical girl dies, their Spiritstone will transmute into a Blackstone over the course of several minutes to an hour. The Spiritstone will start to turn black, alerting her comrades that it needs to be purified. The monsters formed from these fallen magical girls are always stronger than even an A-Class monster, and in addition to their terrifying power, are frighteningly intelligent. Standard operating procedure is for the entire team to pull back and call in the faculty for support. Woe betide those who do not.
