Every year in the cursed port town of Maetzu, an unlucky citizen or two has been discovered as one of the "Cursed Ones", or the "Maetzu". They are often segregated from the rest of the community, who believe it is contagious. The Curse is like that of a werewolf; transforming into a predatory creature in dark times. The Cursed Maetzu tend to live all together in one of the six quarantine houses in the town. Either that or they are told to leave. It is often tradition for the Maetzu to change their names; in fact, it's an unspoken rule for Maetzu to do that so as not to disgrace their family name while traveling. So why are they so afraid of these "cursed Maetzu"?

It's because these Maetzu are destined by the Curse to kill their own families.

We go back, hundreds of years ago, when Maetzu was just being founded. It was a fairly active city, full of bars and rare exports like no other. One day, the governor of Maetzu was greeted by a young woman, charming in behavior and kind in her words. This woman was said to be a nature witch, and she was quite concerned about the fur trade and the hunting activity that took place in the northwest forest. The governor merely dismissed the woman, the next day killing a beautiful white deer and preparing to sell it to the King of Asla, along with one of his daughters. The witch, enraged, transformed the governer's daughter into a lion and had her eat the man alive. For good measure, she cast the Curse on the entire city, declaring that twice a year, a Maetzu would be born to remind the people of the city of the evils of greed and selfishness. The witch had good intentions, but many of these Maetzu born have been treated like outcasts and demons, locked away so that they cannot end the Curse they are stuck in. Some have even been killed. Many of these Maetzu discover what they are between the ages of five and eight.

It's a sad, cruel fate...
