Daughter of the Emperor's youngest brother
Shortly after Kumiko was born, Amaterasu faked her own death to move on to Divine concerns rather than spend time raising her young daughter.
When Kumiko was 18, her mother returned, bestowed her gifts on her and told her of her heritage.
The revelation of her divine nature spurred Kukimo to better herself, not just for herself, but for all of Japan.
At her mother's suggestion, she went abroad for her studies, both to soak up all the knowledge that could be gained by taking the best of from everywhere, and to expose herself to foreign cultures.
Studied medicine with a speciality in prosthetics, and supplemented it with robotics and computer science on the side.

She generally keeps her pedigree, both Divine and Imperial, a secret to the extent that it is possible. However, there it is publicly known that she is studying medicine abroad, and there is always someone who knows.
When the London Catastrophe occurred, she transferred to the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine to be where her help was needed the most.
