Abilities: Can transform into a swan.

Personality: Katsumi, as statuesque as she is, is often taken to be imposing and somewhat intimidating. Nothing could possibly be further from the truth, as Katsumi is in fact a far meeker person than her looks and demeanour might suggest. Ever a people pleaser, Katsumi is often torn between trying to be nice to others and representing the will of her family. Katsumi hates to offend others, and will apologise profusely if she believes she has slighted someone….unless the eyes of the Haneki are on her, and then she feels she has to follow their will to the best of her ability, even if that means being mean to someone that doesn’t deserve it. Most unlike a typical Sorako in a few areas, Katsumi will usually attempt to compensate for this with hammy acting, which all but a handful will probably be able to see through.

For all her shortcomings, Katsumi at least manages to follow the path of the honourable warrior, true to her Haneki roots. While more due to instruction than anything else, Katsumi strictly follows the honour code of the Haneki, refusing to engage in underhanded tactics of any kind. She believes that if she cannot look her opponent in the eyes, then she has no place fighting them or anyone. However, even if it gives her a significant advantage over an opponent, Katsumi will continue to make use of her flight, as that is the way of the Sorako. Anyone that is forced to contend with her in flight will perhaps be confused when they hear her apologise profusely for putting them at a disadvantage.

Her greatest quirk is her fascination with the Tochiko. The Haneki have always studied Tochiko martial arts, but Katsumi is unique in that her exposure to Tochiko methods evolved into a comprehensive interest in Tochiko culture and other subjects. She has made many endeavours to learn more about the land dwellers, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Some among the Haneki find her investment in such mundane topics such as Tochiko architecture to be rather bizarre. Having had limited exposure to actual Tochiko people, any Tochiko that crosses paths with Katsumi will find themselves under siege with questions.

While Katsumi is not a hateful person by any means, she has been raised on a steady diet of mistrust of the Umiko people. Contempt for them is common among the Sorako, and the Haneki family is no exception. Katsumi finds it hard to trust people she has been told by more than a few are behoved to a vile god that made war with their ancestors long ago. Alone with an Umiko, Katsumi will likely be terse and unwilling to converse, eager to leave for safer ground. Within the sight of her family, Katsumi may feel obligated to pretend to openly support their misgivings of the Umiko people, even if she isn’t quite so inclined towards outright contempt.

History: Prior to becoming the representative herself, Katsumi’s grandfather, Toshiro, had been the Haneki representative for a long time. He was always known as an extremely generous man, and no one benefited from his largesse more than his immediate family. Katsumi, having been a shy and timid girl when she was young, never really fit in with the proud and boastful Sorako tribe. While it may have been a short-sighted decision, Toshiro had used his influence to shelter Katsumi from the rest, allowing her to avoid the pressures of society at large and pursue her own interests by her lonesome. Their relationship was always strong, and Katsumi admired her grandfather more than anyone else.

This is why she was devastated when he passed away. He had been exceptionally old at the time, and people had been speculating as to how soon he would kick the bucket, so no one was really shocked. But Katsumi lost more than a grandparent; she lost her biggest friend and the person that had kept her safe from the world. Doubly concerning, it wasn’t long after his death that they started searching for a new representative. They began testing the other Haneki, seeing who would inherit their signature power, and they were starting with those directly related to Toshiro. The thought of being in such a burdensome position terrified Katsumi, and she wanted nothing to do with it. She wished she could just disguise herself and flee from all this.

That’s precisely when she did. She ended up transforming into a swan. Ironically, this was precisely what proved she was the one and only choice of representative for the Haneki. Even if she loathed the idea of taking on such an ill-fitting responsibility, she still felt a degree of obligation to the family, and she did feel she should honour her grandfather’s memory as best she could. She reluctantly prepared herself to assume the role in full. Many among the Haneki were concerned she wouldn’t make the best representative, which is why they attempted to convince her to act more like a typical Sorako. They soon regretted this, as her attempts to act like a prideful Sorako were more embarrassing than her usual meekness ever could be.

In spite of her age, Katsumi has not been the representative for all too long. Her grandfather perished fairly recently, and many are still busily comparing her to him. While Katsumi has always been of impressive stature, a mighty warrior, and a dutiful follower of the Haneki virtues of honour, she just can’t match Toshiro’s aptitude for leadership. Katsumi constantly worries she isn’t living up to expectations, while concurrently dreading what she’ll have to do to actually meet those expectations. All she hopes for is an uneventful period for her to play representative for.
