(Be reasonable, yeah?)

Condition:
(This will be the big project for this CS. Name the physical disability your character has. Describe in reasonable detail the symptoms, causes, and common treatments for it. I’m not expected a five page medical report, but a good amount of knowledge would be appreciated. If you want to keep the specifics of it in the dark, send me the full description, and after I read it over, feel free to write down a shortened version that’s much vaguer.)

Personality:
(What are they like? What are their mannerisms? Does their disability effect their personality to a great degree, or does it not really bother them. How do they see their disability and the disabilities of others?)

Background:
(Were they born with a disability, or did it pop up later in life? How has it effected their lives and families? How did they end up at Yamaku? You can do the same thing with this as you can with the condition!)

Condition:
What exactly Takeshi suffers from is mostly unknown. He doesn’t mention it much, and when asked he either dodges the question or gets defensive. What can be gathered is this:

-It’s most likely respiratory. He runs out of breath very easily, and avoids anything that might mess with his lungs.

-He has to go to pretty regular checkups, usually every month or so.

-He spends a lot of time in his room, almost always in twenty minute intervals, three times a day.

-He has to take several pills before eating any meal.

-He’s constantly coughing, and seems embarrassed when it happens.

Personality:
Takeshi seems surprisingly casual for someone constantly on the verge of death. He tries to act chipper and nonchalant, treating everyone like an old friend, for better or for worse. But it’s simply a mask. Takeshi hasn’t had an easy life. He’s had a lot of opportunities closed to him because of his condition, and has always felt coddled by those around him. He’s also utterly terrified of death. His near death experience as a child, and the fact that most people with his condition usually don’t live past their early forties has made mortality weigh heavy on his mind. It’s one reason he gets so attached to people. Because when he’s gone, they’ll be the last reminders he ever existed. He’s deeply introspective owing to his experiences, and tries to be as empathetic as possible, despite a bit of social awkwardness. He’s fine around good friends, and can even be incredibly passionate and profound, but around strangers he’s beyond awkward. His humor is very dry, often involving him pointing out stupidity, or the absurdity of a situation. He’s also very intelligent...in certain fields, especially Japanese history (he secretly wants to learn Kendo and own a genuine katana some day, don’t judge my sweet boy.) But his casual nature leads him to often forgetting important things, especially if they don’t interest him. He’s deeply sorry for his math teacher, but math is just dull as dirt for him, and he’s barely passed every year. But he also...loves school. Or really, the feeling of belonging it gives him. He’s afraid that once he graduates,he’ll lose the friends he made at Yamaku, and end up completely alone. Without Yamaku...he feels empty, alone.

Background:
Takeshi was born is Okinawa, his father being an IT technician, and his mother being an American Navy sailor stationed there. They met after the ship’s IT guy caught a bad case of the flu somehow, and the only other person with knowledge of the ships data infrastructure was Takeshi’s father, who was b. They got to talking, and after a few more meetings, began dating. Their resulting marriage produced two children, both boys, the second being Takeshi. He was the usually younger brother, always vying for the adoration of his brother, and the love of his parents. The fact he fell behind in athletics compared to his brother didn’t help much. But that was the least of his worries. He diagnosed with a respiratory disorder soon after he was born, something that devastated both of his parents. They did their best to accommodate for him, though his father was...not the most understanding of people, being from a traditional Japanese family himself. His son’s carefree nature didn’t mesh with his strict disciplinarian attitude. His childhood was pretty normal, however, minus a near death experience when he was six. After years of coping with his condition, a doctor suggested that for high school, he be transferred to Yamaku. His parents were initially hesitant, as it was quite far away, but they eventually went ahead with it. Takeshi wasn’t too thrilled with the idea. All his friends were in Okinawa, and moving felt like he was being torn from them. But he had little truth, and moved into the dorms on his first year. It went...surprisingly well, all things considered. He actually made friends, people who understood what he’d been through. Despite having school...Takeshi felt at home. Every holiday felt oddly lonely. Okinawa didn’t feel the same anymore. This is his last year at Yamaku. After this, he’ll be set out into the world, all on his own. A prospect he’s not too thrilled about. He doesn’t want to leave, he wants to stay with his friends. But life goes on, and once again, he has little choice.

Relationships:
Daisuke Nakuhara: Father
Takeshi has a...complicated relationship with his father. His father is...not the best at expressing his emotions, leading to Daisuke often coming off as cold and callous, especially to Takeshi, as the two share few common interests. That being said, there is love there. Daisuke sparked Takeshiu’s interest in Japanese and Okinawan history, and one of Takeshi’s deepest desires is finally gaining the approval of hisfather. The tension is unmistakable. To some extent, Takeshi resents his father, who often seems distant and uninterested in understanding his son’s problems and interests.

Mary Butler-Nakuhara: Mother
Of all his family members, Takeshi is closest to his mother. Yep, we got a Momma’s Boy over here. Mary nis much more open about her emotions, and more proactive in looking after her son’s emotional well-being. That being said, they don’t talk much, with school being so far away and her long hours.

Shin Nakuhara: Older Brother
Takeshi and Shin have a decent relationship. They have a few interests they have in common, though Shin’s personality is far different from his brother’s. The two have drifted apart over the years due to distance, though they keep in touch and hang out whenever they’re back home on holidays. Although, once again, there’s some tension. Shin seems to be the ideal son, and gets along better with their father, leading Takeshi to also have some pent up resentment towards his seemingly more successful brother.

Ambitions:
In terms of career, Takeshi has his goal in mind. He wants to become an anthropologist, specializes in Japanese subcultures. His childhood in Okinawa, and learning of the prefecuture’s dying language and culture insopired him to study and preserve it, alongside the cultures in the rest of Japan. What he’ll do as an anthropologist is something he’s not sure of, maybe a professor or something. On the personal level, his one desire is simple: he just wants to live. He wants to live a long, happy life, something that seems impossible to him.

Extra:
-With his mother being American, Takeshi is of course fluent in English, and often acts as the de facto translator on trips. That being said, he has gotten rusty, leading to him speaking with a very heavy Japanese accent.

Homosexual

Condition:
Makoto has juvenile form ALS, aka Motor Neurone or Lou Gehrig's disease (think Hawkings), that manifested not long into her early teens. Gradually it effected her movement and ability to speak, her father's resources allowed her to undergo various experimental surgeries and other treatment which helped regain some control of her extremities able to move her arms and hands to some degrees. She however is permanently unable to speak or walk requiring the use of a wheelchair and computer to walk and speak respectively. Background:

Relationships:
Toru Tanaka (father): A well known businessmen and philanthropist. A well-meaning man but business minded and proud of being a self-made man and maintaining the family business, fortune and legacy. Not an openly affectionate man but clearly cares for his child but whether it is true care or doing whatever he can to protect his legacy is uncertain. Still Makoto idolizes him and attempts to emulate as best as she can and be the best heiress she could be despite her condition. The recent birth of a child with his new wife threatens that relationship.

Miyuki "Mimi" Hanso-Tanaka (mother): A well known singer, starting as a teen idol slowly growing to an almost international acclaim until her untimely death due to a car accident while she was avoiding paparazzi attention when Makoto was a child. Tomoyo Sato- Tanaka (step-mother): A business acquaintance of her fathers which he started going out with a few years after Miyuki's death and later married. Despite what you might expect, Makoto gets on well with Tomoyo seeing her as what her father needed after her mother's death and a distraction to her own condition. In regard to Makoto's condition, Tomoyo had been very patient and helpful which Makoto appreciates. The birth of Makoto's half brother seemed to have caused a riff between them.

Kenji Tanaka (half brother): Recently born and healthy in all respects. Makoto feelings about him are complicated....

Not much use for long term planning in her condition. Just wishes to make her life worth something, making the expense of her family had spent on her worth something and not to be cast aside because of her condition.

Name:
Steven Ryūnosuke "Steve" "Stevie" "Ryu" Freeling

Age:
18

Sex:
Male

Sexuality:
Heterosexual

Ethnicity:
Half-American, Half-Japanese

Class:
3-1
Appearance:
UWnE7br.jpg
Condition:
Steve has nocturnal asthma, the most common form of asthma. Asthma is a condition characterized by wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. Someone with nocturnal asthma tends to have their worst symptoms at night when they're trying to sleep and may wake up wheezing or coughing, or wake up with chest pain. Causes of asthma can range from indoor allergens such as dust mites, cockroaches, and animal dander to family history to a mother smoking during pregnancy, to exposure to volatile organic compounds such as formaldehyde or repeated exposure to such irritants as secondhand smoke. Why nocturnal asthma gets worse at night varies from case to case, but some triggers linked to nocturnal asthma attacks include increased exposure to allergens, cooling of the airways, sleeping in a reclining position, and in some cases, heartburn. To treat nocturnal asthma, doctors often recommend diet changes, eye drops, nasal decongestants, and/or saline nasal rinse in addition to a rescue inhaler.
Personality:
Steve goes with the flow more often than not. He doesn't try so hard to stick to plans or get caught up in trying to make everything perfect. Instead of committing himself to too much, he prefers to make things up as he goes along and/or take the third option. With that said, if you give him any work to do, he commits himself to it completely, and he can become hyperfocused on the things that interest him. He is also very self-confident--"ore" is the only personal pronoun he uses when speaking Japanese, though he doesn't take himself too seriously. As such, he's chosen not to let his condition make him miss out on enjoying life. He is friendly and quite extroverted in that he finds himself energized by being with people and making friends. However, some may think otherwise since he can be a man of few words around new people, opening up as he gets to know them. Another notable trait of his is that he's a man of logic more so than emotions. That's not to say he doesn't have emotions, but he doesn't really let them drive him the way some do. While he sees the value in emotions, he thinks people often go wrong when they blindly go on feelings. He keeps himself calm nearly to a fault, generally keeping strong emotional reactions at bay. As such, he is level-headed, slow to anger and only the worst offenses drive him to rage and even these offenses are typically those enacted on someone other than himself. He tends to avoid conflict, but he easily asserts himself if someone attempts to push him into something he doesn't want and won't hesitate to call bullies out on their behavior. His intelligence shines through at every turn as he is knowledgeable about a wide variety of subjects from world history to pop culture. He also has quite the adventurous streak.

Background:
Steve was born in Staten Island, New York. When he was four years old, his family moved to Kōzu-shima, a volcanic island considered to be part of Tokyo that has a population of about 2,000 people. At around age 10, Steve came down with a nasty case of the flu that thankfully went away with medication and constant rehydration. Even after the flu had lifted, though, Steve struggled with allergies and nasal congestion that worsened at night. At age 16, he nearly died of an asthma attack one night while trying to sleep and his parents rushed him to the emergency room. The doctors at the time thought it was because of all the smoke and ash coming from the volcano and recommended a change in location. After his parents took some time to discuss the idea amongst themselves, they decided to send him to Yamaku. Steve was actually glad to be sent away since he'd felt chained down during his time on the island and that the place was stale and lifeless. So he decided to enjoy his time at Yamaku and move away after he finished high school.

Relationships:
Ezekiel "Zeek" Freeling: Father
Steve has a solid relationship with his father. Since they share many of the same interests, they tend to find it easy to get along. While they sometimes have disagreements, they don't usually stay upset with each other any longer than 10 minutes.

Nahoko Tendo-Freeling: Mother
Steve also has a good relationship with his mother. While they have a few more disagreements than Steve has with his father, usually over Steve's dislike of the island, these also don't last very long.

David Hideaki "Dave" "Aki" Freeling: Younger Brother
Steve has a close relationship with his 14-year-old brother, having taught him to speak both English and Japanese when they were children. Dave also admires his older brother for not letting his condition keep him down and pushing himself to be the best he can be, and hopes to be like him in a lot of ways. When they have the rare disagreement, it comes off more like jiving than anything else.

Ambitions:
While Steve hasn't decided everything yet, once he graduates, he hopes to move away from Kōzu-shima and discover what he loves doing.

Extra:
He speaks English and Japanese fluently, though his Japanese is slightly American-accented.
