Fantasy Kaizoic: Earth Reborn

Seeing Darrek perked Kairo up a bit. “Yup, me and him were just talking together.” He said, pausing for a second to consider what to say next. “Uhhh, random question, what would happen if I exposed my neck to a pouncer wasp?”

“Oh, fun.” Kairo said, voice slightly higher than before. If that was what happened if you weren’t allergic, he wondered what kind of implications those things would have if they were. This Tarlim guy must have had it bad.

“Care if I ask what would happen if you WERE allergic?” He inquired

"You would swell up and it would block your airways since they go for the necks." Darrek grimaced and glanced at the library door.
He looked back at Kairo with softer eyes.
"Bom has thicker hide so I guess he doesn't see them as threatening. You want me to give you a hand?"

He wanted to say yes at first, but this was his job. He needed to know that he could get by in this world without having to rely on others the whole time. Having Darrek there wouldn’t really be proving anything.

“no no. I got this. You’ve helped me enough”Kairo feigned confidence. “Besides, I’ve gone through worse than a few little wasps.”

"Ok . . ." Darrek nodded. "He'll probably ask you to catch it though. The venom is valuable.
Just saying." He gestured a farewell with his claws before entering the library.

The sounds of Bom's reaction came through the walls shortly after, and Kairo would see the two embrace in a hug through the window.
They were speaking either Kendian or Rithian so their words of joyous greeting would go without understanding from the human.

Catching the wasp and exterminating it were two completely different things, and he was beginning to think he may have bit off way more than he could chew. Even with that in mind, he wasn’t planning on relenting. This may be the only chance he got where he could prove himself, and if he needed to catch a paralyzing, potentially life threatening wasp, then so be it.

Though, he did hope that Darrek was wrong about the ‘catching’ part.

He nodded, returning a quick piece sign as Darrek left for the bookstore. It warmed his heart to see the two of them reunite from the window, a little something to take away from the stress that was bound to come. He watched for a bit longer, leaving to find Tarlim’s house once he realized how weird it was for him to be watching the two from the window.

The house was fairly easy to spot, as everything else in Drafisl was seemingly recent construction, Tarlim's home was of a different architectural design.
Stone foundation with a slanted roof, it bore resemblances with the ancient human cultures of Norse and Mayan. It had been turned into a place of gardening and naturalness, as vines coated the outer walls and baskets hung in several places bearing fruits.

As Kairo approached the building, he spent a bit of time to marvel the structure. The overgrown plants and vines gave it an enchanted look. The natural chaos which enveloped it surprisingly brought calm to his mind. It would have been a nice place to relax, if it wasn’t for the fact that he’d be facing off against a deadly creature in a few moments.

He took a deep breathe and knocked on the door.

Clattering of various objects came from inside, and a colorful bird flew out from a hole in the roof.
The door opened, and standing up to Kairo's chest was a dark blue vindav with orange crests and an assortment of leaves and plants tied with string around his chest and waist.
His sagging neck skin and faded coloring meant he was older than most of his kind in Drafisl.

He looked up at Kairo and started hissing abrasively in the local Vindav dialect, the quills on the back of his neck flaring outward.

Kairo took a peak behind the door, instantly deducting that Tarlim lived a rather.....clustered lifestyle. How the hell was that bird there anyway? Maybe a pet? If that was the case Kairo would’ve felt really bad for letting it run off.

then again, he couldn’t be sure about that until he started talking with this guy. The Vindav seemed aggravated by his presence, that probably wasn’t a good sign.

“Uhhhh. You’re Tarlim, right? Bom sent me here to help you with the pouncer wasps?” He stated, hoping mentioning Bom would calm this man down a little.

The old Vindav cocked his head.
"Bom? Bom juula tasaht Poynca Wappa?" He made a small grin, showing off his gapped array of needle-sharp teeth.

Kairo looked at the Old Vindav, clearly very confused. He heard the word Bom, and only Bom. But it seemed that he’d said something write.

“uh yes?” He replied, hoping that was what he should say. He really needed to learn some of the language.

The Vindav turned and slapped the floor between the doorframes with his tail. He began walking into the dimly lit, cluttered mess that was his home interior.
"Hiisa!" He spoke friendly. "Hiisa tek. Hiisa, hiisa."

Kairo got the message, walking into the chaotic mess that was Tarlim’s home.

“You’ve got a nice place here.” He said, taking a quick look around while also stepping over the multiple trinkets and objects that acted as tripping hazards on the floor

Hanging bundles of aromatic plants and vegetation cultivated the majority of the things hanging from the ceiling to Kairo's eye level. The Vindav was shorter so he maneuvered through the torso-sized sacks of seed and cluttering bottles both empty and otherwise with practiced ease.

"Ikza Poynca Wappa tulec-ta, kakastopeikii." Tarlim explained, being quite expressive with his hands. "Meeh kanna owa Poynca Wappa suutek Yu-Vana." He looked at Kairo and inhaled, swelling his sagging throat skin and imitated coughing.
After exhaling, he reached a shelf of tools and grabbed a fiber net and a rusted metal bucket.
"Täki." He grabbed them and practically tossed them to Kairo. "Täki, ishk Poynca Wappa tula mazko pak." He then pointed to a nearby pile of clutter tossed over a pair of rust-hinged doors that lead below the house.
"Poynca Wappa vi taan."

Kairo nodded along, pretending to understand everything that the old Vindav was saying. If he had to guest, Tarlim probably wanted him to catch the damn thing. That was made pretty obvious when the Vindav tossed him the net and bucket without any warning. He almost tripped on something on the floor as he struggled to receive the tools.

If the room downstairs was going to be this cluttered, then this job was going to be a whole lot harder.

“Here?” Kairo pointed a finger at the door. “P-puoca wappa?”

"Ahm. Ahm." The old Vindav nodded and gestured to the door again. "Poynca Wappa tuula."

He slid by Kairo to start moving the clutter away from the doors so that they may be opened.

“Poynca Wappa.” Kairo muttered to himself. He didn’t know if he’d ever make use of that word again. But it would be more than a little cool to say he spoke a bit of a foreign archosaurian language.

Kairo moves over to the old Vindav and aided him in clearing out the items blocking the door.

Once the debris was gone, Tarlim pried loose the locking hatch and pulled open one of the doors with creaking movements.
It thudded heavily against the ground once the way was clear for the human to enter.

"Ahm, putrisa kalamino Poynca Wappa." He instructed, pointing to the net first and the bucket second.

Kairo nodded, waving the man off before giving him a confident thumbs up. It was kind of funny, because confidence was about the last thing he was feeling right now? How he was going to get a paralyzing wasp into a bucket he did not know.

He turned, heading down into the basement floor below. Each step he took was tentative and precise, as if the wasps would get aggressive if he made even the slightest sound. As an extra precautionary measure, he took off his hood and hastily wrapped it around his neck. Maybe that would be enough to stop a sting?

slowly but surely, he found himself in the bottom floor of Tarlim’s house

The basement of the Rithian structure had been converted into a sort of greenhouse. The windows close to the ceiling brought sunlight inside to aid in the growth of various fruits and herbs scattered in various pots and bins. The floor above was supported with two wooden pillars. The braces had stylistic engravings on them with finely carved symbols and artistic molding. A permanent reminder of the people who built this house before Tarlim claimed it.

The smell of the room was heavy, damp, and was thick with overlapping smells of plants. Despite the dim serenity, a few leaves rustled on the opposite side of the basement when Kairo entered.

With the amount of plants and the windows that emitted the natural light, the room barely felt like it was inside. Tarlim really did take care of his plants, and if it wasn’t for the rustling at th we other side of the room, Kairo probably would have enjoyed staying in a place like this.

but alas, relaxing wasn’t what he was here to do, with the net in hand, and the bucket in the other, he slowly began approaching the movement.

Skittering sounds came across the floor beneath the layer of greenery that came up to Kairo's knees. Pointed legs clacked on a stone floor like the tapping of fingers with long nails.
In one pass, the Pouncer came within three feet of Kairo before changing direction away from him, rattling a pot and going behind a row of boxes.

“Ahhh FUCK.” Kairo yelped. He stumbled, almost losing his footing. If he shifted any more to the left, he’d probably have to pay more for damages than the entire job would make. Not to mention probably getting paralyzed as well.

Nobody told him that this thing was faster than a damn race car, and nobody fucking told him that he wasn’t even going to be able to see the thing he was going to catch. This definitely just got a whole lot freakier.

He sighed to himself, guess he was going to have to rely on sound then. He took a poised pose, staying in his current spot. He didn’t dare close his eyes but kept his ears honed as he listened for the distinct clattering footsteps of the pouncer wasp.
