SilverFeathers

Ruler of the Sky
Page 1 - Creation of Balance
Softly and dreamily, you are slowly lulled awake from a deep slumber, only to be greeted with a vast expanse of white in all directions. It should perhaps, be concerning. But rather than fear, you feel a sense of nostalgia and comfort... as if you've been here many times before. Though you don't remember anything at all, as to why you are here, or who you are, you feel strangely at peace. It is only now you realize you have seemingly no physical body either... though you do not feel concerned about that either. Just as you start curiously looking around, your consciousness now quite active and awake, you hear a gentle and clear voice speak to you from an indiscernible direction.

Welcome back, my child.

They welcome you in a tone so indescribably comforting, as if you've waited all your life just to hear these words.

You have done well, and thus, deserve a gift.

But, as with all things, there must be balance.

Choose your blessing... and your curse.

Before you, three golden symbols materialize and float delicately in the open expanse of white. Just by gazing at them, vague information otherwise untold, flows into you.

Choice A: Blessings
  1. Golden Heart - Blessing of Regeneration
    • Even the most grievous wound will heal... if you protect your heart.
  2. Golden Eye - Blessing of Future Sight
    • Dreams and visions could be what saves you from tragedy.
  3. Golden Peacock - Blessing of Beauty
    • An unmatched visage... the dream of many.
After wordlessly making your decision, the symbol you choose glows softly, before floating over to your side whilst the unchosen slowly fade away.

In their place, three dark symbols appear and float frighteningly before you, menacing and stark as they eagerly await your choice. You do not wish to choose any of them, but at the same time, are compelled to. Just like previous.

Choice B: Curses
  1. Blackened Fangs - Curse of Gluttony
    • To eat and eat... but to fail to, will drive you mad.
  2. Blackened Chains - Curse of Weak Body
    • Physical activity is your enemy... potentially a fatal one.
  3. Blackened Flower - Curse of Loneliness
    • To have company is a blessing... but being alone is painful.
In terms of voting, you can simply answer with 'Choice A: 1 and Choice B: 3' or 'A1 & B3' or however you would like to abbreviate it. You can vote however you wish, for what you would do, or for the most rational choices, or for the most irrational choices, vote however you feel :3

Eagerly, as if afraid you'll run away, the darkened symbol resembling a malicious beast's fangs rushes into you. As it disappears, you think you see the slightest hint of a demonic smirk pulling at its lips, but whether that was just a figment of your imagination or not, you can't tell. The symbol of a golden peacock gently follows after it, fading away into soft golden stars as it consumes your vision for a brief moment.

The leftover curses, unlike the blessings previous, shudder violently in place, quickly growing in intensity before cracking open and disintegrating into black shards that give you a most ominous feeling. They too, quickly fade away and are wiped from your vision in just a few moments.

How interesting...

You hear the familiar comforting voice chuckle, lulling you once again into a sense of peaceful security.

Now then... let us decide further matters.

Faintly, you feel as if something is very slightly off about the situation, but you can't figure out what it is. Rather, your attention is quickly diverted as three arched doorways suddenly materialize before you. Just by laying your eyes on them, you are sucked in, as if you were really there in the sky peering downwards.

The first depicts a flourishing city, a capital by the looks of it, with a grand white castle sitting majestically atop a hill in its center. The warm sunlight casts a radiant glow to the land, with people bustling about and chattering amongst themselves. Trade seems to be plentiful, with caravans frequently arriving at the city gates for inspection and entry, and lively marketplaces scattered throughout the districts. You spot what seems to be a group of magic students, throwing fireballs and ice shards in a small training field, and patrolling soldiers in the air keeping watch over the city, riding creatures such as pegasi, gryphons and wyverns. Shining smiles and peaceful happiness abounds, even in the bountiful fields and forests that surround the city. Faintly, however, over the view of the horizon, you notice a dark shadow peeking over the edge, carefully and patiently watching all that goes on.

The second portrays what seems to resemble the city from the first portal, however unlike the peaceful and happy aura you sensed from the first, you can only feel gloominess and despair in this one. Fewer people can be seen walking about, most of which are geared in some way, whether that be with a weapon at their hip or a layer of makeshift armour. Many buildings and structures have taken substantial damage, particularly the tall walls that surround the city. But especially noticeable, is the castle. Though still white and tall, tattered flags and banners flutter wearily amidst the many gaping damages to its structure. Two of the four main towers, pillars that once showed the majesty of the city from afar, are nowhere to be seen, likely obliterated from whatever tragedy struck this place. Only stumps of debris remain in their place.

The third doorway is not as different from the second as the first. The damages from the last portal can still be seen, though to a more serious extent than before. However, the once frightful and paranoid aura that permeated the capital has given way to a cold and quiet neglect. Winds occasionally blow through the abandoned buildings, with not a soul in sight, causing howls that ring eerily through the silent city. After a few more moments of looking at the barren, lifeless lands, you notice a small group of people approaching from afar. Clad in clothes and gear visibly stitched together from scraps, they scour the city for loot, digging through debris and searching through what used to be people's homes and shops. After a while, they pack up their bags and backpacks and set off once again, back the way they came. Watching them smile and chat with each other, you begin to wonder, are they better off than those from the second portal?

But once again, your thoughts are cut off by that comforting voice.

Which will you choose?

Slightly dazed, you are compelled to make your decision without a second thought.

Choice A: Destination
  1. First Doorway
  2. Second Doorway
  3. Third Doorway

This seems quite interesting.
I think the one most interesting to see would be the apparent start (in terms of time) therefore I'd vote:
1. First Doorway

  • Second doorway

"Oh ho, I wonder why you would pick that one. Do you fancy yourself a hero? Saving the glorious city from its darkest times? Or perhaps... You seek to exploit it? How very interesting indeed..."

The more you hear the sweet voice speak, the more you affirm your suspicion that something is wrong. The familiarity and comfort this place gives you feels true, but this voice... faintly feels as if the comfort and peace it gives you is all a ruse somehow, unlike the many times you've been here before. How could it be? What could've changed in the time that you have been gone?

"Well now, I suppose that's enough from me."

The voice chuckles lightly, cutting your speculative thoughts off with its hazy comforting tone.

Just as you wonder what other decisions needed to be made, an immense invisible force violently pushes you forward, launching you through the second doorway. As you flail and fall in panic and stress, straight towards the vast ominous city below you, you vividly hear the mesmerising voice behind your back laugh unrestrainedly, morphing into something most terrible. The violent cackling sends shivers down your spine, echoing demonically in the back of your mind, even as the doorway fades and closes itself behind you, with the once comforting voice leaving you just three final whispered words.

"Come again soon..."

As you regain your wits from the shock, realizing that your imminent peril is definitely the more important matter at hand, and turn your view towards the gloomy city far below you, the whole world abruptly turns black as your senses are ripped away from your body.

---

An immeasurable amount of time later, you reawaken. Your feel your memories and thoughts dance and jumble about terribly in your mind, but as you reach for them, they slowly slip out of your reach and fade away. Although at first you panicked at the thought of losing everything you knew, now, you feel at peace. Before long, you remember nothing at all. You have been wiped clean, like a blank state.

As you bring your attention to the present, you realize, you hesitate to even open your eyes for some reason. However, you feel warm, like you are wrapped by fluffy clouds.

Your head leans against a soft wall, and through it, you hear steady beats, like a drum. Something light and gentle can also be felt tickling your cheeks. You feel very at peace but also quite weak. Moving around even just a little is tiring for you, even as you try to snuggle yourself into a more comfortable position.

It is only when you finally muster up the strength to lift your eyelids that you see a loving face smiling down at you. As soon as you lay your eyes on her, her smile broadens and she calls you most affectionately.

"My baby..."

Choice A - Mother:
  1. Your mother has a weak and gentle appearance, with long golden wavy locks and soft light rose eyes.
  2. Your mother has a glamorous and gaudy appearance, with eye-catching amethyst purple eyes and gorgeous straight crimson red hair.
  3. Your mother has a sharp and cold appearance with dark blue short hair and thin silver eyes.
  4. Your mother has a tough and kind appearance, with wispy brown hair drawn into a plait and lively forest green eyes.

"Oh, did I wake her?"

Another voice calls out not too far from you, as you realize the owner of which had been stroking your cheek with his finger. As you lay your eyes on him, he blossoms into a most gentle smile, clearly ecstatic.

Choice B - Father:
  1. Your father has an unkempt but intellectual appearance, with messy white hair and icy blue eyes.
  2. Your father has a vigorous and muscular appearance, with rough ginger hair and deep brown eyes.
  3. Your father has a noble and intimidating appearance, with elegant curly purple hair and frightening blood-red eyes.
  4. Your father has an aloof and mysterious appearance, with black hair that covers one eye. The other eye however, is a mesmerising gold in colour.

"I'm so glad that you were born safely... so very glad..."

Your mother's tearful whispers of relief confused you a little, though you would not understand the true reason behind them until a few years later.

Regardless, you were born peacefully without any complications, to a pair of loving parents that cared for you deeply. As time passed, you observed many things as you slowly grew up. For the first few years, you were stuck only able to explore and take in the house that you lived in. But even then, there were plenty of things to learn about and get used to.

Your mother always seemed to be running about and busying herself with work, doing things like cooking, cleaning or tending to the plants in the garden. She would always wave to you so excitedly whenever she caught you peeping at her through the window. Despite her business however, she was somehow always the first to hear your cries and hurry on over, dropping whatever she may have been doing at the time without a care. She loved to pinch your face and babble on about how their baby could be so beautiful, sometimes looking as if she would melt away when you beamed at her or laughed uncontrollably from her tickles.

You saw your father far less often, only being able to catch him in the late evenings after he returned from his outings. He would try and hide it whenever your mother was around, but his brows were often creased with stress and he looked exhausted. Despite that though, whenever he picked you up or played with your little hands, everything that plagued him seemed to wash away. Maybe that's why you couldn't help but reach out to him more enthusiastically in those limited moments you had together. On the rare days he stayed home, he seemed to like working in the same room as you, scribbling on paper and reading thick books and documents. During these times, he was always somehow very keenly aware of your situation, keeping you away from the slightest hazards and having timely responses to your needs despite not seemingly paying you that much attention.

Though but a babe, you were popular. After all, just as your mother often hopelessly praised, you were a very beautiful baby. Your mother even laughed about how you had few wrinkles when you were just birthed. You had mesmerizing forest green irises that faded into a gradual cerulean, topped off and speckled with icy blue stars. Your little round face and fair skin, adorned with soft tufts of gentle light-brown baby hair, caused everyone to praise and shower you with attention. You inherited all the best features of your parents, like your mother's eye shape and your father's nose, seemingly magnified tenfold and blended harmoniously.

People would often come see you, making you pretty accustomed to strangers and socializing at a very young age. You almost never lacked playmates or attention. Of the many people that came to see you, like the two older ladies that often came as a pair or the cheerful young man that looked similar to your mother, there was one person in particular that stood out to you. She was an elegant young lady, with silky silver hair and amethyst-like eyes. Dressed in a lively baby blue dress, and though subdued by the pricey but discreet cloak atop her shoulders, she exuded an aura of nobility and wealth that couldn't be ignored. She seemed to be close with your mother, and though she did not stay for long, you remember her very carefully holding you in her arms for a moment with a warm smile.

As time passed however, your peaceful world started to subtly but rapidly change around you. Even as a baby, you could feel tension rising in the air. Both your mother and father seemed to grow worried, and would sometimes just hold you in their arms without a word. Loud noises from afar would sometimes wake you from your sleep, though your mother would always try to cover your ears and coax you back to rest in her bosom. One time in particular, you remember your father returning with his arm bandaged up and in a sling. You think it was in that moment, that something awakened in your mother. She was always a strong and tough woman, but you could sense a new resolution in her. When not caring for you, you would often find her outside the window swinging a wooden sword and studying what seemed to be a training manual. Though she would still give a silly smile whenever she caught you peeking, she would always quickly get back to work soon after.
