Information on this deadly pathogen is extremely scant. Insanus fluvium is suspected to have originated from the Southwest Federacies, eventually spreading to the southern Central Republic via the Jasper River.

The initial mass outbreak was the result of water-borne infection due to contaminated drinking sources in large cities. Further spread of the contagion was facilitated through droplet and bloodborne contact. The afflicted eventually became violent and in many cases overwhelmed authorities.

The Civil Medical Institute fully realizes that it has failed in its duty to protect the citizens of this country. This health issue has since escalated into a critical homeland security concern that has cost millions of lives.

Any remaining uninfected civilians should read this carefully. The Civil Medical Institute will have its operations taken over by the armed forces shortly.

Type A Infected ["Turners"]

Type A infected are those who have only recently contracted the infection, and thus still retain their human characteristics. When nearing their transformation into Type B infected, they tend to become dangerously contagious due to the onset of symptoms like vomiting and coughing, which can spread the infection. Generally after about about a day, they will undergo a transformation into Type B infected. Sometimes, it can be hard to distinguish Type A from B, as Type A individuals have the possibility of behaving exactly like Type B indivudals, even before reaching the same stage of infection.

I've observed several captured examples of "Turners". They are basically just people, so it doesn't feel right categorizing them with the others. They're still human, and nothing we did to them made me feel very good about myself. One kept begging us to let her go, while another just sat there, seeming more accepting of his fate. Usually, a subject will contract the infection when they contaminate themselves with infected fluids without knowing it. Each subject reacts differently when they realize that they are infected. Outside of lab conditions, they usually remain in denial until it's too late for them to stop themselves from transforming into Type B. Again, it doesn't feel right grouping them in with the other infected, as they will also be attacked by late-stagers.

Type B Infected ["Coughers"]

Type A infected transform into Type B infected after they partially lose their minds and experience the onset of very painful symptoms. Damage will be caused to their vocal cords, and will typically render them incapable of speech. Often, Coughers desperately try to seek out help, but they are extremely contagious to others. Eventually, Type B infected will transform into Type C infected, although the exact amount of time can vary widely.

This is when they stop behaving like themselves in most senses. I'm not quite sure if it would be accurate to stop calling Coughers human beings, though. Still, they are messed up. I'm not quite sure why, but they can no longer reason at all. They stumble around and tend to try and grab others, while spreading the infection around wherever they go. They're probably fucked in the head, which is why they don't take into account that they are contagious and incurable. Still, they seem to be human beings, albeit brain-damaged ones. They're incredibly dangerous by way of spreading the infection, but are generally not violent; they're harmless as long as you're in a fully protective chemsuit.

Type C Infected ["Lunatics"]

Type B infected become Type C infected when their painful symptoms decline slightly, although they will be rendered completely insane. The cause of this is speculated to be brain damage. Type C infected individuals will always be extremely violent. Their level of intelligence can vary, but it tends to be very low. Some have been noted for lacking decent motor skills.

The transformation from a moaning, confused, sickly person into a deranged, bloodthirsty psychopath seems bewildering to me. I heard some part of the brain controls your aggression levels and stuff, so the infection probably screws with that. Lunatics have enough intelligence to sort-of stay alive. If they find any sort of food lying around, they'll eat it. If there is a water source, they'll drink from it (and infect it in the process.) Some Lunatics behave differently than others, but by default, they are all simply crazy assholes. Some will run straight towards you like idiots and just try to beat you to death, but I've seen others that are smart enough to handle guns and traps (usually poorly), and some that are sadistic enough to play with their victims. A squad and I once found an old cabin with a few Type Cs in it. It seems they had been torturing some Turners for several days, but most victims had already turned into later-stagers at that point. It gives me chills when I think about how similar Lunatics are to just normal serial killers and the like... I understand why they're called what they are. I feel hatred towards them, even though they can't control what they do. Still, I see them seemingly derive pleasure from the pain of others. Maybe the infection brings out the more violent side of people?

Type D Infected ["Stenches"]

If a Type C infected individual is left alive long enough, they will eventually develop more severe brain damage and physical deformities, transforming them into Type D infected. The infection will render them unnaturally resistant to pain, and nearly completely depersonalize them. Their speed is reduced, and they become more clumsy. Eventually, Type D infected will finally die from the infection, die from other diseases, or starve to death- although it sometimes takes an unusual amount of time for one of these to happen.

Stenches are totally dead inside. It's like they have no soul left in those gangrenous husks. Stenches are only vaguely reminiscent of human beings, as they've devolved into vicious, decaying sacks of pus and filth. Stenches stop taking care of themselves in some aspects; I've seen plenty of examples with shit and piss in their pants, all while slowly dying from food-borne illnesses and other crap. They smell awful, far more than Lunatics. They're also harder to take down, it's like they feel no pain at all... and they probably don't. Though, they tend to be slower-moving, since the contagion seems to sap their agility in favor of granting them ridiculous robustness and strength. The military escorts I'm with have been trained to aim for their heads, as it conserves ammunition. Takes too many chest shots to drop them. I'm glad that these freaks usually die from diseases and stuff before they can turn into anything worse.

I mean.... USUALLY they die before turning into anything worse. What's the price of an untroubled mind?
