Black / Dark Magic

When people think of witches, the imagery of sacrifices and conjuration of evil are likely what manifests within their minds. While, undoubtedly a part of the rich history of witches, such practices actually fall upon what’s known as “Dark Magic”. Magic falling under such category include Hexes, Blood Magic, and Necromancy. As a result of its turbulent and volatile nature, the practice of dark magic is often regulated or heavily overseen within many witch covens. Some had even gone as far as to ban its practice completely.

In contrast to their “better” counterpart, dark magic embodies the lustful desires and envy of the human race. They draw from the greed that plagues everyone’s soul in order to allow for the casting of dangerous and often malicious spells. Such spells often serve the purpose of the meeting said desires, whether it be reviving a loved one, charming one’s crush, or even hexing an enemy.

Aside from being difficult and tricky to master, dark magic is often considered to be the most dangerous form of magic to practice. A simple mistake or unforeseen complications could result in devastating effects that could lead to the death of the caster. Dark Magic also has the tendency to corrupt the minds of its users and augment their emotions far past their initial states. This can only be countered by witches/warlocks possessing strong and hardened willpower but even so, effects from using such magic could still be felt.

Most spells that fall under dark magic often requires a form of “payment”, usually involving blood, magical objects, bodies, or even souls. An example can be found in Hexes, as spells involving the curses tends to require some form of conduits, such as a voodoo doll or something belonging to the targeted person. On many occasions, the emotions of the caster play just as big of a role as their skills. To specify, a witch hexing someone who had murdered his/her family would result in a more powerful and likely more tortuous curse than if targeted against a stranger. In the end, it largely revolves around the spell used and the caster.

2. Necromancy
Necromancy

Contrary to popular belief, Necromancy wasn’t created to serve those who wish to “cheat death”. Rather, it was created to protect the loved ones of witches. Often considered to be amongst the most perilous form of Dark Magic, Necromancy should only be practiced by experienced and skillful witches. Due to the high risk of Necromancy, the practice of said magic is forbidden or limited within many covens, even more so than other forms of dark magic.

It’s a form of magic that essentially allows one to communicate, summon, and resurrect the dead. In some cases, it could even allow the user to manipulate the nature of life and death itself. Many often turn to Necromancy in hopes of restoring those that they lost. Sadly for many, their attempts to cheat fate would lead to even greater losses than gains.

As a result, such spells must be carried out with extreme caution and vigilance. A small mistake could lead to results far more hazardous than the problem that the spell was trying to solve. Most spells that fall under Necromancy requires a sacrifice of sorts, largely a soul or a life. This is especially prominent in spells involving resurrection as one can only be brought back if another is sent in their place. If one were to disrupt such a balance of life and death, the consequences could be disastrous. Nature will always obtain its balance through whatever means necessary. The most prominent example can be found with vampires. Despite their immortality and supernatural characteristics, their existence upsets the equilibrium that nature seeks to maintain. As a result, they were cursed with many weaknesses from sunlight to their vulnerability to stakes and vervain.

Necromancy doesn’t always have to involve those that had died. It could also be used to enhance the abilities of the living. This can be achieved through rituals involving living souls. As one of if not the purest form power source in existence, the use of souls could strengthen a witch’s power far beyond their initial limits. Consequently, the risks are just as immense. If done wrong, attempts to manipulate said life source could very well lead to an agonizing and regretful death, one that involves the complete disintegration of one’s body.
