"Growf!"
This is not so much a story about superheroes or their enemies. It is a story about growing up with the powers and responsibilities those powers bring, and dealing with the angst of making decisions and living with the consequences - OR about lacking powers, but having the grit and skill to face off against such foes, while trying to lead an ordinary life. Only a few of the members of this group will have superpowers. (Others COULD be non superpowered heroes or villains.) The characters are semi-scripted, with facts about them listed, but the rest open to artistic license.
At the center of the story is Vanguard. He was the first superhero to make the news about a year ago. For all intents and purposes he is the RP’s answer to Superman. He looks something like Superboy from Young Justice, but wears a mask. His eyes appear a solid, glowing deep blue. He stands a solid 6’7”. There is no such thing as kryptonite, but then he is nowhere near as invulnerable, strong or fast as a Kryptonian. He can overcome gravity. When he first appeared his speed was estimated to be well over 120 mph. (He was considerably faster, but nothing supersonic.) He was definitely bulletproof (not quite true as those were street weapons). Tasers had no apparent effect. And he has been seen running into burning buildings to rescue people. He has adopted wearing a black bodysuit that is clearly a form of body armor. And he has adorned himself with a heavy black cape (which he has used to protect people). His powers seem to be growing.
Some of the Fads started that are about Vanguard:
Small stuffed kittens whose paws are velcroed to the shoulder or chest of a shirt.
Shirts and Signs with the slogan (in bright pink) “PINKY SWEAR?”
In the past year he has become the obsession of “every” girl of a comparable age. That means pretty much all the girls at school. However, Vanguard has that Clark Kent thing going for him under the name Duncan. He has learned how to relax his muscles to give himself a very lanky appearance (yes, glasses) and has done his best to adopt a mild mannered person. He has a reputation for being smart. Math and science are his world. He has a love for playing the guitar and piano (no professional aspirations though). He has been seen with sewing projects, including making large stuffed doll clothes. He was also on the school newspaper last year.
He started at his current high school last year as a senior. When he arrived last year he had clearly been in a bad accident or something. He walked with a bad limp in his left leg. His left hand was useless. He was generally excused from gymnastic courses. To this day the limp lingers. But with the start of his Senior year he has tried out for the football team. The coach took pity on him. The guy could take a real beating and the first stringers need target practice. Mostly Duncan finds himself cleaning up after the others … Being part of the team is digging into his work on the school newspaper.
Now For the Other Characters
These are all characters open to the group. Those that are boldfaced need to be taken by committed members. Without them the RP stalls and goes nowhere. Please don’t take one of those slots unless you can commit. Remember, this is more about the teen angst than the powers. (Just because you see Powers on the Blank CS doesn’t mean your character should have any.)
Crush (Female) - This is Vanguard / Duncan’s crush. Of course, at this point he is pretty sure he is in the friend zone. You see, he is pretty sure she thinks he’s gay. (He’s not!) But at this point he will take any interest by her just to talk to her. If he has a kryptonite, it is her. But it gets better. You see, she’s a superheroine. In fact, he has worked with her on occasion. And that’s a bit confusing for him. He doesn’t KNOW she and her alter ego are one and the same. (We are going to have to come up with some pretty fancy tricks to hide her identity.) SHE, on the other hand, has a crush on Vanguard. But as her alter ego she has to exercise restraint. For some reason, Vanguard doesn’t seem interested in her as a superhero - not that way anyways. In that arena SHE is the one in the friend zone.
Best Friend (Male) - Pines for Duncan - AND fawns over Vanguard unrepentantly. This does nothing but convince Duncan’s crush even moreso that he is gay. But he may also have another love interest (who might easily get jealous).
Best Friend’s Lover (Male) - Optional character - requires approval by Best Friend.
Narcissistic Mean Girl (Female) - Your basic narcissistic social media influencer. This character is going to need a very detailed background. What is she REALLY like at home? Is her whole life a lie? Oh, and if you haven’t guessed, she is Crush’s nemesis. THIS character may develop powers in some freak accident. (I am thinking of something like Livewire from Supergirl.)
NMG’s Syncophantic Groupies - These are NMG’s enablers. They will agree with everything she says. NMG will often treat them like crap just to get her way. One of these days one or more may get tired of the abuse.
Narcissistic Jock (Male) - Your basic Flash Thompson type. Star athlete, bully, etc. If you want to go a step further, have him start a fan club for Vanguard. Completely optional.
Head Cheerleader (Female) -
We will also need a couple Bad Boys, maybe a Bad Girl. A Rock Star wouldn’t hurt. These could also be secondary characters. I am seriously looking to have some take to a life of crime. Also a few Geek types, maybe even victims of bullying.
Setting and Plot
This is up for discussion. Public or Private school. Please discuss this in the OOC thread rather than in the Interest Check.
The Main Plot will center around the core characters and events at school. This part of the Plot is to be group guided. The events outside the school - that is the supervillain story - will be semi-sandbox, mainly controlled by myself. In short, I don’t want us getting too distracted.
Eventually we WILL need to have heroes and villains clash. But I want to develop the group dynamics first.
