Graded [Frontier] Frozen Kingdom

Scene 4: Above the chasm -- Moving On...
Orikanyo Orikanyo StarPrincessVal StarPrincessVal Norschtalen Norschtalen

In the aftermath of the battle against the glacial slimes, the members of the caravan went about their tasks with a sense of urgency, keenly aware of the danger still lurking nearby.

Mimi's curiosity and excitement were palpable as she went about harvesting the Glacial Slime Essences with her bare hands. The menthol like chill and jelly like viscous feel of the ooze intrigued her, and she took great delight in uncovering the valuable crystals within. Her tail wagged vigorously as she proudly presented her findings to Finn, who watched her with a mixture of admiration and amusement.

Shalys, on the other hand, approached the task with a more methodical and cautious mindset. Her knowledge of alchemy guided her as she skillfully harvested the essence from the slimes. She couldn't help but notice Mimi's enthusiasm and, although she admired the girl's spirit, she knew the potential dangers that came with handling slimes. After gathering a fair amount of essence, she went to Mimi's side to make sure she was alright. As she warmed Mimi's hands, she shared her concerns about the undead army and her idea to use the essence in a salve to ward off the cold.

Finn, meanwhile, couldn't help but be utterly charmed by Mimi's infectious enthusiasm and Shalys' quiet concern. A warm smile graced his face as he watched the two interact, and he couldn't resist the urge to dote on Mimi. However, he was swiftly reminded of the situation at hand when Shalys mentioned the undead army. Finn introduced himself to Shalys and inquired about her background, wondering if she was from the See.

The atmosphere among the caravan was a mix of tension and camaraderie as they went about their duties. Despite the looming threat of the undead army, there was a sense of unity and determination among the group. They knew they had to rely on each other to survive the perilous journey ahead.

As they worked, the cold wind carried whispers of danger, the distant groans and shuffling of the undead army hidden by the glacier's icy mists. They knew they didn't have much time before the army would be upon them, but for now, they focused on the task at hand and the fragile bond forming between them.

As the adventurers who ventured into the heart of the glacier returned to the surface, they brought with them incredible pieces of the once fearsome Cinder Scourge. Among the items were chunks of its hardened carapace, pristine salt glands, and long filets of flesh. The group exchanged words of encouragement and determination with those above, sharing a moment of understanding about the perilous tasks that lay ahead for both parties. Then, without wasting any more time, the adventurers below delved deeper into the glacier's heart to continue their own dangerous quest.

Meanwhile, the caravan above finally set off, embarking on their arduous journey through the frozen wastes. The vanguard of the undead army was relentless, harrying the caravan day and night over the next two days. Their constant pursuit left the travelers with no time for rest. As the relentless chase wore on, the members of the caravan felt the strain of exhaustion taking its toll on their bodies and minds.

The vanguard of the undead army was a horrifying sight to behold. Comprised of various types of undead creatures, each one more terrifying than the last, it was clear that this was no ordinary force. At the forefront of the vanguard were skeletal warriors, their bones clattering and rattling as they marched in unison. Clad in tattered remnants of armor and wielding rusted weapons, these skeletal minions made for a formidable first line of attack.

Behind the skeletal warriors, legions of shambling zombies staggered forward. Their rotting flesh hung from their bones, and their lifeless eyes stared blankly ahead. Emitting guttural moans, these zombies moved relentlessly in pursuit of the caravan, driven by an insatiable hunger for the living.

Among the ranks of the undead vanguard were also ghouls, faster and more cunning than their zombie counterparts. These twisted, corpse-like creatures had elongated limbs and razor-sharp claws, which they used to great effect in tearing through their enemies. The ghouls slithered and crawled between the ranks of undead, adding a terrifying level of unpredictability to the vanguard's movements.

In the skies above, wraiths and specters floated ominously, their ethereal forms casting a chilling pall over the battlefield. These ghostly beings could pass through solid objects, and their icy touch could drain the life force of their victims, making them some of the most feared foes in the undead vanguard.

Commanding this nightmarish force was a powerful necromancer, a figure shrouded in darkness and mystery. This sinister individual wielded dark magics, animating and controlling the undead legions with an iron will. The necromancer's presence was palpable, casting a shadow of dread over the caravan and the lands they traversed.

Together, the vanguard of the undead army struck fear into the hearts of all who encountered them, as they relentlessly pursued the caravan through the frozen wastes.

Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds, the caravan pushed forward with the help of Finn's celestial healing and divine warmth. His abilities provided the much-needed respite and comfort amidst the harsh conditions and unending pressure from the undead forces. Even so, two days without rest was a heavy burden for the caravan members to bear, and they knew that they could not continue at this pace indefinitely.

As the undead vanguard continued to snap at their heels, the caravan members pressed on, their hearts heavy with the knowledge that the rest of their journey would be fraught with danger. They steeled themselves for the battles ahead, knowing that the only way to survive was to rely on their skills, their wits, and, most importantly, each other. Their determination, forged by adversity and strengthened by the bonds they formed, would be the driving force behind their desperate march through the treacherous frozen landscape.
On the dawn of the third day, as the caravan members trudged wearily through the snow, a glimmer of hope appeared on the horizon. The sky began to shift in color, turning from the dark, oppressive clouds that had hung overhead for days, to a soft golden hue. As the sun began to rise, the first rays of sunlight broke through the cloud cover, casting a warm, brilliant light across the frozen landscape.

As the sunlight touched the undead vanguard, a strange phenomenon occurred. The skeletal warriors, zombies, and ghouls began to slow their advance, as if the very light itself was sapping their strength. The wraiths and specters, once terrifying in their ethereal forms, began to flicker and fade in the presence of the sun's warmth. The entire undead army appeared to be weakened by the dawn's light, their movements becoming sluggish and uncoordinated.

Seizing this unexpected opportunity, the caravan members rallied their strength and quickened their pace. Finn, though weary from days of providing celestial healing and divine warmth, called upon his faith once more and invoked a blessing upon the caravan. A warm, golden aura enveloped the travelers, further invigorating them and bolstering their resolve.

As the caravan pressed on, the distance between them and the undead vanguard increased. The sun continued to rise, its light growing stronger and more radiant with each passing minute. The undead army, once a relentless force of terror, now seemed to struggle against the light, their once-fearsome numbers dwindling and their advance faltering.

By the time the sun had fully risen, the vanguard of the undead army had been forced to retreat, disappearing into the shadows from which they had emerged. The caravan, though exhausted and battered from the harrowing chase, had gained a much-needed reprieve. The members took advantage of this momentary respite to rest, regroup, and tend to their wounds, knowing full well that the undead threat still loomed on the horizon. But for now, at least, they were safe in the warm embrace of the dawn's light.

While traveling through the frozen landscape on their way to the shrine, Finn, Mimi, and Shalys came across a group of travelers encased in ice. Their faces show expressions of fear and pain, clearly having fallen victim to the harsh elements.

The travelers encased in ice appear to be a diverse group, hailing from various races and backgrounds. Their attire suggests that they were once a group of merchants, adventurers, and scholars who might have been journeying together for safety or shared purpose. However, a dark corruption seems to emanate from around the last two figures, making it difficult to discern the details.

The first figure is a tall, muscular human male, his beard and hair encrusted with frost. He's clad in heavy furs, with a battle-worn sword strapped to his side. Despite the fear etched onto his face, his posture suggests that he was trying to protect his companions when disaster struck.

Next to him is a female elf, her delicate features and porcelain skin marred by the frost that clings to her cheeks and the tips of her long, pointed ears. Her robes, embroidered with intricate patterns, indicate that she may have been a mage or a healer. Her hands, outstretched in a casting gesture, seem to have been in the midst of casting a spell when the ice engulfed her.

A stout dwarf stands close by, his thick beard and braided hair frozen in time, as well as his armor and battle axe, which gleam with a cold sheen under the ice. His fierce expression reveals his determination, even in the face of certain doom.

There is also a lithe halfling, wrapped in a thick cloak, clutching a lute to her chest. Her eyes are wide with terror, but the defiant tilt of her chin suggests that she may have been attempting to rally her companions with a song of courage or inspiration.

As the scene progresses toward the last two figures, a dark corruption seems to permeate the ice surrounding them. A hooded figure, possibly another mage or rogue, stands beside a scholarly human or half-elf clutching a tome to their chest. The ice that encases them is thick, but the darkness within it distorts their features, making it challenging to determine the extent of the corruption's influence.

The corruption appears to be seeping out from around the last two figures, its tendrils weaving through the ice like veins of shadow, tainting the frozen tableau. The sight of these unfortunate souls, frozen in their last moments of desperation and shrouded in the encroaching darkness, is both haunting and heart-wrenching.

As the group debates their course of action, they sense a change in the atmosphere. A once-benevolent ice elemental, now corrupted by dark magic, is a tragic sight to behold. Where it once shimmered with an ethereal, pristine beauty, it now bears the weight of the malignant forces that have warped its very essence.

Standing at an imposing height of fifteen feet, the ice elemental's original form was a breathtaking blend of crystalline ice and frost, sculpted into a humanoid shape. Its limbs, once graceful and fluid in motion, have now become jagged and twisted, as if the corruption has disrupted the natural flow of the ice that makes up its form. The dark magic has stained the once-transparent ice with a sickly, mottled black hue, causing it to resemble corrupted obsidian more than pure ice.

Its head, which used to be a smooth and featureless expanse, now bears sinister hollows where massive eye should have been. The dark magic has carved out a hollow, leaving behind pitch-black voids that seem to draw in and consume all light that falls upon them. The elemental's once-smooth surface is now marred with deep fissures and cracks, as if the corruption is tearing its very form apart from the inside.

The elemental's once-gentle aura of frost and snow has been twisted into a malevolent and oppressive force. As it moves, it leaves a trail of dirty grey snow that falls like ash, withering plants and turning the very air around it frigid and lifeless tinged with the oppression of despair (Grade D.

Even as the once-benevolent ice elemental has been transformed into a monstrous creature of darkness, faint glimmers of its former beauty still shimmer beneath the corruption's hold. A sense of tragic loss emanates from the creature, hinting at the pure, majestic being it once was, now trapped within the cruel embrace of the dark magic that has consumed it.

OOC:
  1. The caravan faces a difficult choice: stop and attempt to free these unfortunate souls or press on, knowing that the undead army is still not far behind.
  2. Finn, Mimi, and Shalys must decide whether to face this powerful corrupted ice elemental in combat, find a way to restore its natural balance, or focus their efforts on rescuing the trapped travelers, all while keeping in mind the ever-present threat of the undead vanguard
  3. How will Finn, Mimi, and Shalys handle this difficult situation? Will they prioritize the safety of the caravan and the frozen travelers or confront the corrupted ice elemental? What creative solutions or tactics will they employ to overcome these combined challenges?

Each hour these people are pushing, pushing beyond their limits. His healing magics restore stamina sure but without rest... They will fall over and die from exhaustion. His light, it drove them off time and time again but they were dogged in their pursuit. He could lay down strikes from his blade but they would be naught but a swathe into an ever growing mass... He could possibly survive his rushed to the necromancer, cutting down foes...

But these people would surely die.

He was no gloryhound, his was the path of... "Shit!" He dashed once more destroying a skeleton that got luck with it's footing, he latched onto the sled's side for a moment, to catch his own breath... Those monsters wouldn't need to...

They could keep charging forward forever...

Was... This going to be these people's slow death? Surely they would meet a friend, surely they meet a strong ally right? What kingdom leaves one of it's few paths south unguarded!!!

No Finn, focus, another day, maybe two? Keep on.

These people need you... And its not a matter of arogance, they need your sttength. Thats why your here, if being a hero was easy everyone would do it! Make use of these strange powers and defend them!! With the light, the glorious dawn, the undead were hampered, and breath could be gained... It felt like a month since they were able to stop. His vitality was beyond mere men... But these people were dieing for rest... He would... Keep watch... for a time...

But soon they were off again, once more across the pearlescent desert of white pitfalls and death. Undead were at their heels, but at least not upon them, his worries kept him awake... And for the time ahead, he took to wearing his helmet.

A thing of nessessity... He couldn't let others see his wearyness.

He was a knight, he would rest only small amounts, until their safe... Or help arrives...

~~~~~~~~~
Their troubles began anew... A new trouble always comes. First the people, frozen... He felt for them immensely, but he said nothing, his breath bellowing out from the halm's face like the breath of a dragon, steaming the air ahead... But... the next sight... it was beyond horrid... To others it looked another monster, but his appraisal... Gave him knowledge of it's tragedy... A horrid thing had happened to it... a curse beyond compare... His magics... He... wondered but... He feared he might not be able to break it... Unless...
Tyrmar... What he did before... He collided his strength with Finn's own... It made his aura ring like a bell... Perhaps something... similar...
"...I... This elemental... it can help us..." he spoke out from his helm, looking abit unsteady on his feet. "But... I... I don't think we could reach it without provoking... I... If we can purge the curse... It could possibly remember it'self, and help us." He planted his sword in the ice before him. He then regarded the caravan, looking amongst them and speaking loudly. "Everyone, I know I ask only that you keep pushing, to think of safety and soon succor gained by our destination. But in this moment, I shall ask but one favor of you. I ask for a small prayer, a wish in truth. before us stands a being corrupted, a guardian broken by the deeds of evil... From what I have seen... This is why this path has fallen so.. I ask you to aid me in the purification by one simple act.
And earnest wish, a simple earnest wish for protection, to protect your loved ones, to make it to safety. close your eyes, and wish upon the stars, the sun, whatever you may please.. But wish with your heart. It may seem childish, but it is but a singular favor this knight will ask of you. Please... join us in this moment..." he would turn back to his placed sword, and looking towards Shalys. "I will need your aid miss.. We cannot approach it... but.. with your arrow.. it may bring the magics to it.. I saw the way my light encircled your arrows during the battle, if we strike at it's core and purge it.. We may have a greater ally on our side.. and one that will stand vigil again over this ice sheet... if you do not... I.. fear I may need to go in and plant the purge myself... We will have little time, Ms.Shalys, I hope that you will aide us."
And with this.. Finn began his own prayer... not one to a god, but one of pure wishing, a small furvent desire and wish for this protector to return once more to it's resplendent glory... he was no master of these things... But... the wish was a powerful thing... Desire made manifest... it made his strength what it was, his magic what it was. his desire to aid, to protect, to heal... he believed it was the power of wishes that made him and a few others so strong... perhaps Shalys.. and even Mimi.. were of these people so blessed...
And so... he prayed.. His body was riddled with fatigue, but, he let his fervent wish shine.
Mimi listened to Finn's words, letting them wash over her. A prayer? She didn't really understand what a prayer was or how to make one... But a wish? She understood that word. A wish was something you wanted more than anything else. She could make a wish. She closed her eyes and focused. What was it she wanted more than anything else? To find a master leather worker to train und- no... for some reason that wasn't right... It was what had been driving her the past several months, but when she thought about it, she didn't WANT that. She was just pushed by it. So what did she want? She didn't know... and if she couldn't figure it out, she was going to fail the wish... she was going to let everyone down... Her tail and ears drooped, and she began to tear up, but she kept her eyes closed. What was it that she wanted? Why was this so hard? Maybe she had lost that part of her along with her memory. But if she couldn't get this right, now, she couldn't keep every one safe. She wanted to keep everyone safe. Her ears perked up. She wanted everyone to be happy. Her tail began to wag. She WANTED to belong. She squeezed her fists and clenched her eyes closed, focusing on keeping everyone safe and happy, with hope beyond hope that there was somewhere waiting for her when they made it through this.
Shalys Dar’Miam "Hunter"
Location: Near a Corrupt Ice Elemental
Interactions: Finn
Having warmed up to the human a bit more, Shalys was a bit more willing to chat with him. "Yes, though I do not come from any major settlements. I come from a small village, though we do get many travelers, be they fey or human. I would not be surprised if I were to ever come across my hometown again considering it's value as a rest stop for travelers. And you may call me Hunter." Shalys was very much aware that Hunter is more of a masculine name among humans, and if it referred to a title normally she would be called a Huntress, but if Finn doesn't ask about it than Shalys wouldn't elaborate either. Besides their chat needed to be cut short so that the caravan could continue moving: this momentary stop would have to end before those undead could reach them. Once everyone returned to their sleds, Shalys resumed her scouting duties.
Travel was hard enough for the sledders, be they man or beast. Shalys had no time to rest either as she was one of the few people in the group who's senses were feen enough to spot the undead horde through the snow and ice, and far too many times Shalys felt that even her senses were failing her when she spots undead uncomfortably close to the caravan. If it were just a group of perhaps twenty or thirty, Shalys may be willing to fend them off. But they were being pursued by an undead army that did not tire, did not care for the cold, who's only hunger could be fulfilled by the flesh of the living (and even Shalys was pretty sure they don't actually need to eat at all anyways). It was a cruel twist of fate that she, the Hunter, is now among the hunted here. But she remained ever vigilante and between her scouting duties she would attempt to help the caravan with their ails. She was no healer but she could turn the glacial slime into salves that can ward off the cold, though it's really only good for the sleds and crates that suffered the most from the constant exposure to frost. She lacked the tools or expertise to make a salve usable for people to use on themselves.
On the third day (Or was it second? Shalys lost track) something good happened for once. Through the thick blizzard a literal ray of light shone through, growing and expanding into daylight. Not only was it far easier for Shalys to see where they were going now and how far they had to go, but this daylight forced the undead back and end their pursuit. This gave the Caravan precious time to actually rest and recuperate, something that Shalys wasted no time to take advantage of. She ate the first warm meal she's had in days and got a bit of sleep, but as soon as the caravan was ready to move she was awake and ready to continue scouting. Oh sure, she would love to sleep longer, but duty calls.
However even with the threat of the undead army a distant issue, that doesn't mean things are completely safe. As the caravan traveled forward they came across some unfortunate travelers who had succumbed to the harsh cold. Bodies frozen solid, taken by winter's bite. No one that Shalys recognized, though she was a bit uncomfortable seeing the frozen elf. Again no one she recognizes, but she's all too aware that this could very well have been her fate if her fortune takes a turn for the worse. That being said Shalys did note that it doesn't look like anyone here simply collapsed and died, rather they were all somehow frozen in the midst of a battle. This put Shalys on edge and made her take out her bowgun, concerned that whatever did this to them was still nearby.
Then Finn asked for not just Shalys, but for everyone to join him in prayer for these lost souls. Was this some sort of exorcism technique? Shalys wasn't exactly the most superstitious despite how common magic is in the see, so she had no idea how exactly prayers would help here. But Finn was also evidentially a holy warrior, so Shalys can only hope that he knew what he was doing. Stranger still was that he needed her help specifically, but at least this one was more understandable: He needed her to shoot the heart of the corrupted ice elemental, which was something that even Shalys wasn't too confident she can do. Mostly because she has no idea what sort of defenses this elemental may have, so it could easily block or force her arrow off the path. But if Finn needed her steady aim, than he shall have it. As for a prayer... Shalys supposed she could at least offer that.
Hap’a myukil sha lu be’iru
Yaididila leu minas sak’chwa
Di mi woilaj molof hap’a
Not so much a prayer as a song, but one used by her village for young women to give them hope and protection for their journey. She looked to Finn with a nod as she continued her song, and set herself up to shoot at the heart of the corrupt elemental. Though she continued her song, her focused on nothing but her target. She put aside the prayers and the voices of the other caravanners, the howling of the wind, the flailing of dark tendrils of the corrupt elemental. Her focus was to eliminate the evil before her, so that her bolt will fly true. Even as her own voice faded into silence, Shalys continued to concentrate until the perfect moment to land her shot, infused with whatever magic that Finn can offer her to cleanse the corruption once and for all.
Action 2 - Begin her prayer
In the frozen realm of the North, the weary caravan halted before a heart-wrenching sight. Standing before them was Kaltvarr, the once-revered ice elemental, now a corrupted entity exuding an ominous aura. It was a tragic scene that was a stark reminder of the harsh reality they were facing.
From Finn's perspective, this corruption was a twisted abomination that needed to be rectified. Drawing on his strength, he implored the caravan to join him in a prayer, an earnest wish for purification. His voice echoed in the icy wasteland, his plea sincere. He implored Shalys, their best archer, to lend her skills to this cause. With her arrow, she would deliver their combined faith to Kaltvarr's core. Kneeling by his planted sword, Finn let his fervent wish shine, praying that the protector would return to its resplendent glory.
Mimi, puzzled at first, grappled with the concept of a prayer, a wish. What did she truly want? As her eyes remained closed, her mind teemed with thoughts and wants, but the most important realization dawned on her - she wanted everyone to be safe, she wanted to belong. This newfound clarity renewed her spirit, her resolve.
Shalys, always vigilant, agreed to help Finn. She wasn't sure of the efficacy of prayers but she trusted Finn. Drawing her bowgun, she steadied her hand and aimed at the heart of the corrupted elemental. In her heart, she echoed an old song from her village, a hopeful hymn offering protection. Her concentration was unwavering as she awaited the perfect moment to release the bolt.
As the combined wish for safety, purity, and belonging resonated through the air, a collective prayer arose from the caravan. It swirled around Shalys' arrow, a tangible pulse of hope and goodwill. As she let it fly, it cut through the air, a beacon of purification heading straight for Kaltvarr's corrupted core.
The spectacle that unfolded before them was nothing short of divine. Kaltvarr, once a beacon of nature's tranquility, now tainted and reduced to a puppet of darkness, quivered under the onslaught of their prayers. The massive figure of the elemental, embedded in the bleak canvas of the icy wilderness, was a heartbreaking sight as it trembled, struggling against the chains of corruption.
The arrow, a simple weapon transformed by hope and faith, found its mark, plunging into the core of the beleaguered elemental. The strike resonated, a harmonic symphony in this silent white world, like a single note played against the backdrop of a hushed orchestra. The icy elemental shuddered as the arrow penetrated its frosty exterior, carrying the pure intentions and hopes of the caravan within its enchanted tip.
A breathless moment passed, suspended in time, where everything seemed to pause, to hold its breath, to watch and wait. The silence was palpable, bearing down upon the spectators with an almost divine reverence, framing the moment with a sacred tension. The aura was akin to standing on holy ground, a sacred sanctuary where something momentous was about to unfold.
Then, slowly, a change occurred. A change so subtle it might have gone unnoticed had all eyes not been fixated on the elemental. The dark tendrils, a manifestation of the insidious corruption that had claimed Kaltvarr, began to recede. They pulled back like vicious serpents recoiling from a force they couldn't contend with, repulsed by the fervent prayer that now pulsated within the ice elemental's core. The tendrils writhed and recoiled, disintegrating under the holy energy that radiated from the arrow, their hold on the elemental weakening.
It was a moment of intense triumph, where light overpowered darkness, where hope pushed back despair. The silent prayer of a band of survivors, the raw desire to protect, to heal, was making a difference, was winning against a force that had seemed insurmountable.
The fight was not over yet. The corruption had receded, but Kaltvarr was still a twisted version of its former self. However, the elemental was noticeably less aggressive, its malicious aura dimming. For the first time in what seemed like an eternity, there was a glimmer of hope. The prayer had made an impact. It had reached Kaltvarr, and maybe, just maybe, it could restore the elemental to its former glory. The caravan, united in their desire to overcome their plight, pressed on, bolstered by the outcome of their collective prayer.
As Finn's earnest prayer resonated across the icy terrain, a wave of celestial aura surged from him, encasing everything within a 500 feet radius. This aura, pulsating with a plea for purity, fell upon the frozen travelers and the enigmatic tome that lay in the vicinity. The scene that unfolded was nothing short of miraculous.
Trapped within the ice, the travelers stirred, their bodies roused by the potent energies emitted by Finn's prayer. It was a paradoxical moment, a cruel blend of rebirth and hypothermia, as the frozen victims grappled with the shock of a sudden resurrection within their icy prisons. Their gasps of astonishment echoed against the desolate expanse, each breath a testament to their unexpected revival.
Amongst this extraordinary spectacle, the ancient tome, once a catalyst of corruption, underwent a transformation. Stripped of its previous host, Kaltvarr, the tome sought a new bond, an affinity that matched its sinister nature. It found its mark in Finn's potent healing ability [Return From the Brink: Healing B, Holy Affinity E]. This ability, known for its curative powers, sealing wounds, and even restoring life, became the new host for the Corrupt Tome.
In an unexpected turn of events, the tome bonded itself to the healing spell, resulting in the addition of a [Limiter: Corrupt Tome]. This new configuration morphed the healing spell, its divine potency now mixed with the tome's corrupting energy. The merger was an eerie dance between light and darkness, amplifying the healing spell's potency while infusing it with a taint of corruption. Now, every use of Finn's healing power would carry a strain of the tome's darkness, the healing and corruption now two sides of the same coin.
The celestial energy wave gradually receded.
The moment Finn's prayer subsided, a renewed sense of urgency overcame the caravan members. With the frozen travelers beginning to stir within their icy prisons, the crowd rushed forth, a mixture of determination and fear etched on their faces. They gathered around the ice-encased victims, each taking turns to chip at the frosty armor with whatever tools they could find, their breaths heavy in the frigid air.
The scene was a chaotic blend of life and ice, of relief and despair. Some of the ice-bound travelers began to shiver, the chill of hypothermia setting in despite their recent miraculous revival. Encouraging words and pleas for strength echoed across the icy expanse as the caravan members worked tirelessly to free their newfound companions from their frosty confines.
Meanwhile, the once corrupted guardian, Kaltvarr, stood amidst the chaos, his form wavering between solidity and icy mist. A sense of confusion clouded his crystalline eyes, a remnant of the corruption that had been purged from him. In this disoriented state, the elemental guardian saw Finn as a threat, his judgment clouded by the lingering effects of his tainted past.
With a roar that reverberated across the icy plain, Kaltvarr enacted his defense mechanism, an ability known as [Glacial Tomb; Grade C, Effectiveness 14]. As if on his command, the air around Finn chilled dramatically, and before the brave knight could react, he found himself encased within a tomb of pure, unyielding ice. The crystalline block was perfect in its formation, a testament to Kaltvarr's power, and it imprisoned Finn in its heart, rendering him immobile.
The frosty tomb was not merely a barrier; it was a weapon. As seconds passed, the tomb began to inflict continuous frost damage on the trapped knight. The sharp bite of frost gnawed at his vitality, threatening to sap his strength away. Escape was possible with enough effort, but the relentless cold would slow and weaken even the hardiest of warriors.
Kaltvarr stood silent, watching his handiwork. The frozen knight within the glacial tomb was a grim reminder of the elemental's power and the dire consequences of its misuse. The caravan members halted their rescue efforts, turning their horrified gazes towards the frozen Finn. Their mission had just become far more challenging, and they would need to muster every ounce of their strength to overcome this dire situation.
Meanwhile, the caravan members had made progress with the frozen travelers. They had managed to free a two of them from the ice, their breaths coming in ragged gasps, their bodies trembling. There was relief in their eyes, but also worry as they watched the ongoing struggle with the ice elemental.
OOC:
1) While Glacial Tomb automatically encases Finn, he can break out if he can exceed the effectiveness. Otherwise he'll suffer continuous Blight (-2hp freezing), Continuing (1dmg 4 posts), Drain (-1 Vit, Str, Speed), Incapacitating.
2) The Corrupt Tome corrupts the [Healing B] skill, by attaching a [Limiter: Corrupt Tome] Finn's healing skill now needs the tome to operate. When the skill is used it's power is increased per Limiter rules by 1 Grade, but the corruption is now transmitted as well.
3) Kaltvarr's corruption was removed but he's confused, like someone woken up in the middle of deep slumber. He's cranky and crabby.
4) The Frozen Travelers are resurrected but they are freezing to death again, suffering from hypothermia, etc.
  1. [Freed] The first figure is a tall, muscular human male, his beard and hair encrusted with frost. He's clad in heavy furs, with a battle-worn sword strapped to his side.
  2. [Freed] The second is a female elf, her delicate features and porcelain skin marred by the frost that clings to her cheeks and the tips of her long, pointed ears. Her robes, embroidered with intricate patterns, indicate that she may have been a mage or a healer.
  3. [Trapped] A stout dwarf stands close by, his thick beard and braided hair frozen in time, as well as his armor and battle axe, which gleam with a cold sheen under the ice. His fierce expression reveals his determination, even in the face of certain doom.
  4. [Trapped] There is also a lithe halfling, wrapped in a thick cloak, clutching a lute to her chest. Her eyes are wide with terror, but the defiant tilt of her chin suggests that she may have been attempting to rally her companions with a song of courage or inspiration.
  5. [Trapped] A hooded figure, possibly another mage or rogue,
  6. [Trapped] A scholarly human or half-elf clutching a tome to their chest.
  7. [Almost Free] The Corrupted Tome is wiggling and shaking it's way out, gray gold specks of dull gleaming light twinkle and pop around it as it does.
"We... We did it! We cleansed it of..." what... What!? His... It was resonating... He... He didn't intend for this to go that far! No, no he couldn't lose controll of his own power! What... What if he ends up killing these people? Like Michael? He, he couldn't allow it, he couldn't let this take over and go rampant!
But... It... It was working! But... Why did he feel... A self diaognosis, it discovered something... Latched onto his healing skill like a tick was a requirement... That tome... That tome in the ice that eminated such evil had latched onto him! It... Ugh... It stuck where he casted from, his left hand stung like hell, like something was crawling up it. A feeling of something profane, the pain was intense, like something was crawling under his very skin!
He bit into his lip, drawing blood as his other hand acted with instinct, glowing with light he planted the arm along the blade, the armor protecting the man from cutting his very arm off, but it's bite into the muscle suffused him with the holy light... Stopping the pain just past his elbow... And went no further...
He could barely brrak a sigh of releif, as the one they intended to save struck out.
He didn't have time to stop it in the act, in a flash he was frozen still as the others caught in the ice... He felt his breath cut short, his armor.. It.. it kept the ice from fully entering him but.. But... He... He couldn't move!! He began to breath hard, then forced to breath quick, finding air gone from him. Was... was he betrayed again? A selfless act!? Was... Was the titles just a trick!? He.. He-
His hand was still upon his sword, the pain in his arm clear but... focusing... Yes, focus, focus on the now, theres a reason for all things, use what you know and strike back! Break free! Don't fall victim to this the others were counting on you! You carry their dreams of returning home!
"Dream the impossible dream..." he let the light spark yet again, he would strike back with what he knew best! Force through!!! His sword glowed yet again, but with... abit less vigor than last time, but nontheless as much force, the shine holding wisps of the dark plagueing him. He let the glow rage, with the sword pointed downwards the radiance will have to do to melt this ice!
It has to work! IT HAS TO!
"To fight- the- unbeatable- Foe!" He was loseing breath, he unleashed his strike, blasting directly downwards in a straight line!!! Just a straight, blinding razor of light down into the earth!
Shalys Dar’Miam "Hunter"
Location: Caravan
Interactions: Kaltvarr, Mimi
Somehow, this last shot was one of the hardest Shalys had to make this entire journey. She wasn't sure why: maybe it was because there was a lot more pressure on her to make the shot. But made it she did, and her mundane bolt created a blinding light brighter than the sun. By the time she could see what had happened, things seem to be going well. The elemental wasn't going insane, probably, and the frozen people were thawing out. Shalys was about to go help them when suddenly the elemental attacked Finn! She had no idea why it did that, but Shalys knew this battle wasn't over yet. However she wasn't sure what she could do to help: perhaps she could try and explode the icy cage trapping Finn, but she has no idea if her bolts would do anything, nor did she want to risk hurting him. But she had no curative magics either, nothing that could purge corruption or provide clarity. She cursed her lack of preparation: she knows there's a potion that could do that, but she didn't have time to make anything like that right now.
"Mimi! Try to free one of the frozen people, maybe the one with the book! Perhaps they know something that can help, hurry!"
But.... Perhaps she might have something that'll work. If nothing else, maybe it would distract the elemental long enough to get Finn out. This was a gamble of course: Shalys frankly has no idea what might happen. She might just make things worse. But she knows if she does nothing, things will get worse. So Shalys runs towards Kaltvarr, trying to come at him from a blind spot (She has no idea if elementals have eyes to have a blind spot, but she will try anyways). As she got closer, instead of using her bow gun, she took out the glacial slime salves. Being made of the elemental essences of glacial slimes, perhaps they could help Kaltvarr come to his senses.
Or he will be angry that some random elf threw slime on him. It was a gamble, but one that Shalys will take.
"Great spirit, heed my call! Darkness had taken your heart, but we have purged you of your corruption. But now you are harming the very person who have saved your soul from eternal domination! Take this essence and remember who you are, so that you can see who your true enemy is!"
Action 1 - Move closer to Kaltvarr
Action 2 - Splash Glacial Slime Salve onto Kaltvarr
Action 3 - Be ready to dodge if Kaltvarr tries to hurt Shalys.
As the song created by the impact of the arrow resonated through the tundra, Mimi opened her eyes again. It seemed the wish had worked. Her tail began to wag as it seemed like they had overcome the trial and the people in the ice began to stir. But suddenly, a shell of ice incased Finn, sending Mimi into a panic. She clawed at the prison, pulling her hand back quickly at it's icy burn. She was unsure what to do, when the woman with the strange weapon spoke to her. She looked to her, then nodded in acknowledgement.
Mimi rushed to the frozen scholar clutching the tome, unsure what to do. But if she didn't do anything, Finn might be hurt. She steeled herself, resolute in her determination. With all might her might she struck at the ice prison, pushing herself to her limits.
The spark of purity amongst a sea of ice and filth
As Shalys took her gamble and flung the glacial slime salves towards Kaltvarr, the unexpected sight of the elf's audacious move caught the attention of everyone present. The salves hit the ice elemental with a splat, temporarily leaving a mark before being absorbed into the icy form of the entity. The impact, small as it might have been, caused Kaltvarr to momentarily falter, his focus wavering. Was it recognition or merely distraction? The moment was too fleeting to tell.
The subtle shift in Kaltvarr's focus was all Finn needed. Seizing the moment, he managed to gather his remaining strength, focusing his will on his sword arm. The holy aura around the blade intensified, flickering like a beacon amidst the creeping cold. Finn let out a strained cry, the last words of his song turning into a battle cry as he drove the blade downwards. The icy tomb around him shivered at the impact, fracturing lines appearing on its surface as the holy light clashed against the elemental frost.
Then, with a blinding burst of light, Finn's Horde Breaker strike shattered the icy tomb, a shower of crystalline shards raining down around him. The shockwave of the strike rippled across the frozen plain, its holy aura pulsating against the icy chill. Despite the cold gnawing at his vitality, Finn had broken free, demonstrating the indomitable spirit of a true knight.
As the blinding light of the strike faded, the reality of Finn's state became apparent. His breaths came in ragged gasps, his strength visibly depleted from the desperate struggle. But there was a glint of stubborn resolve in his eyes, a promise that he would not fall easily.
However, the clash had taken its toll on the knight. Finn's left arm, where the dark curse from the tome had tried to spread, bore a visible mark of struggle, the flesh underneath his armor tinged with a sickly hue. The pain was intense, but the holy light had managed to halt the corruption, leaving him with a clear, albeit painful, reminder of the consequences of his selfless act.
Seeing their companion break free from his icy prison, the other caravan members let out a cheer, the triumphant cry echoing across the icy landscape. But there was little time for celebration. With Kaltvarr momentarily distracted and Finn still weak, the caravan needed to act swiftly. Shalys, taking charge of the situation, ordered Mimi to help free the traveler holding the ancient tome, hoping that they might possess some knowledge to deal with the lingering crisis.
Meanwhile, Kaltvarr, taken aback by the sudden chain of events, seemed to be in a state of confusion. His icy form flickered, his menacing aura wavering under the onslaught of uncertainty. The elemental looked at the remnants of his Glacial Tomb, now shattered and melting away, and then at Finn, standing resilient amidst the wreckage. It was a sight that gave pause even to a creature of frost and fury.
As the moments passed, an unspoken tension hung in the icy air. The caravan members, exhausted yet determined, prepared for their next course of action. Kaltvarr, an elemental now caught in a web of conflict and confusion, stood eerily silent, his next move unpredictable. Finn, the beacon of hope for the caravan, stood amidst the shards of his icy prison, his strength waning yet his resolve unwavering.
This was the calm before the storm, a moment of respite before the next onslaught. But in the face of impending danger and insurmountable odds, the caravan stood firm, bound by a shared goal and a newfound sense of unity.
The breathless silence was shattered as Mimi sprang into action. Her paws pounded against the frozen tundra as she dashed towards the scholar trapped in ice, her heart pounding with every beat. She had always been more comfortable running than thinking, and right now, she had a clear task to focus on. Fear and uncertainty were replaced by purpose.
But as she neared the encased scholar, a terrible realization dawned on her - she had no idea how to free the man without hurting him. She hesitated for a split second, but then steeled herself. There was no time for indecision, not when Finn's life was on the line.
Her clawed hands clenched into fists, veins straining against the strain. In a blur of fur and muscle, she struck at the ice encasing the scholar. Her first hit landed squarely on the icy surface, echoing with a resonant crunch as tiny fractures snaked away from the point of impact. With each subsequent hit, the fractures grew in size and spread further apart, revealing the scared man beneath.
There was a raw power in her strikes, an unrestrained fury that was only amplified by her desperation. But the effort took a toll on her. Sharp pain ran up her arms, a warning that she was pushing herself beyond her limits. But she continued, her focus solely on freeing the scholar from his icy prison.
A grunt of effort followed her final punch, a solid high kick aimed at the weakened section of the ice. The force sent the scholar tumbling backward, his prison of ice shattering around him.
The ice had finally started to retreat. The frozen travelers were stirring, their gasps and cries of surprise punctuating the air as they came to terms with their sudden awakening.
Mimi, with her relentless tenacity, was now left with fists that were raw and broken, her strength seeping out as drops of blood dripped from her mangled hands.
Where the salves had hit the icy behemoth seeped into the cracks and crevices of its icy body it's ice continued to clear of cloudiness to return back to immaculate clarity. The elemental's movements were slow as it let out a low howl like wind blowing through a cave, seemingly in discomfort. The elemental was a formidable foe, its wrath as unpredictable as the very elements it was composed of. Would it stay frozen and immobile or fall like an avalanche upon the caravan?
The once frozen travelers began to slowly emerge from their icy prisons, confusion clouding their faces. But even amidst the confusion, there was a sense of gratitude, a silent acknowledgement towards the trio who had risked their lives for them.
The true battle was just beginning. The frozen tundra echoed with the rising howl of the elemental, a chilling sound that sent shivers down their spines.
But as everyone braced for the elemental's next attack, something unexpected happened. A soft hum filled the air, a counter harmony to the elemental's howl, a resonance caused by the quivering of the infused arrow Shaly's had fired. The song, once soft and barely audible, was now growing in intensity, wrapping around the scene like a protective cocoon. As the song filled the air, a strange calmness descended upon the scene. The song had a soothing quality, like a lullaby sung by a loving mother to her child.
The elemental seemed to react to this tune, its own howling striking a cord and it's movements becoming less erratic, less hostile. It seemed to be swaying slightly, entranced by the melody. The melody seeped into its icy form, soothing the rancor within. The tundra fell silent, save for the lullaby that now filled the air.
As the final notes of the melody drifted away, a profound silence once more fell over the landscape. The elemental, once a raging behemoth, now stood still, the anger within its icy form finally chilled.
Kaltvarr's crystalline form shivered with the resonance of his voice, which echoed like an icy gale whipping across the tundra. His gaze was distant, a window to an ancient, storied past filled with power, betrayal, and regret.
"Centuries ago, before mortals took hold upon these lands, I dwelled peacefully within the crystalline heart of this vast icy expanse," he began, his tone as cold and distant as the tundra itself. "In a time before the name Kaltvarr was ever uttered in fear or awe, I was just another child of the Frost, serving the land with my brethren."
His gaze hardened, the cerulean glow of his eye illuminating the frozen ground. "Yet peace, like the thaw of spring, is but a fleeting moment in the grand tapestry of time. One fateful day, that scholar," Kaltvar raised a long, icicle like finger towards the scholar and the tomb, "Obviously a winter wizard corrupted by the lure of black ice, ventured into my realm. His quest, fueled by an insane noble, sought to harness the heart of frost within me for a purpose most nefarious."
The elemental prince's icy countenance shifted subtly, reflecting the shadows of the past. "He brought with him the Scriptures of the Frostfall, a tome of malevolent power so great that even I, a prince of frost, could not resist its twisted allure."
The surrounding air grew colder as Kaltvarr continued. "A tome not of this world, made of spectral ice, both ephemeral and solid. Its icy sheets whispered insidious prophecies, echoing the eternal cold of the Void, promising a cataclysmic winter of the world's end. Its pages shimmered with an eerie luminescence, casting an unsettling indigo glow around. Holding it... felt like embracing the dread and power of an endless winter." Kaltvarr's description of the tome was poetic if accurate.
He paused, his gaze falling on the travelers who had, unknowingly, aided in this dire mission. "Driven by the mad whispers of the Frostfall, the winter wizard sought to perform a ritual, a twisted rite to unlock the eternal cold contained within me. But I resisted, drawing upon every shred of my strength to foil his plan."
His voice took on a solemn tone. "In the ensuing struggle, I attempted to seal away the scholar and the Scripture, drawing upon the unwitting aid of the other travelers who accompanied him. They had no idea the dread purpose they were hired for. Their faces still haunt me... A mix of confusion, fear, and... betrayal." Kaltvarr looked at the recently reanimated travelers, thanks to Finn's holy healing abilities. "A burden lifted. One you now bear mortal champion," Katlvarr looked at Finn's body, so battered.
His gaze swept over the assembled crowd, as if searching for understanding in their wide, frightened eyes. "I failed to seal the Scripture... and the rest, as you have witnessed."
As Kaltvarr's tale came to an end, a silence fell over the group, a solemn quiet broken only by the whistling wind of the tundra. Then a dry, icy laugh cut through the stillness. All eyes turned towards its source: the dark scholar!
Slowly, the winter wizard rose to his feet, ice falling from his cloaked form as he straightened. The remnants of Kaltvarr's icy prison that had encased him shattering into a thousand shards in the process. He looked at Kaltvarr with a sneer.
"Accusations," he spat, his voice crackling like frost on a winter's morning. "What a quaint way to put it, Kaltvarr. Yes, I sought your power, all enchanters do. You monsters are to be used. I tapped into the heart of Frost within you, and I regret nothing to aid my lord his ascent."
A glint in his eyes suggested madness, but his voice remained steady and calm. "The Scriptures of the Frostfall are not a curse, Kaltvarr. They are the key to rebirth, to renewal. To purge the world of its current corruption and start anew. You call it a cataclysm, I call it salvation."
The frosty air seemed to grow colder as he held out a hand. The Scriptures of the Frostfall, lying abandoned where Mimi and Finn had freed it, stirred. Its icy pages rustled, shimmered, and then the entire tome flew into the scholar's waiting hand. An eerie indigo light spread out from the tome, illuminating the scholar's twisted smile.
Suddenly, the whispers seemed to grow louder, more insistent. They swirled around the group like a snowstorm, their insidious words gnawing at the edges of everyone's minds. Some clutched their heads in pain, others stared at the scholar in fear or defiance.
"The winter is coming," the scholar declared, holding the Scriptures of the Frostfall aloft. "And the world shall be reborn in frost and ice. Kaltvarr, you can't stop it. You tried once and failed. Please, I invite you to try again! You've already accepted the seed, you can not resist the Frostfall. Embrace your end."
The eerie luminescence from the tome grew brighter, casting long shadows across the tundra. The whispers became a cacophony, the prophecies of winter's end ringing out loud and clear. Many huddled together, uncertain of what was to come.
Shalys Dar’Miam "Hunter"
Location: Caravan
Interactions: The Winter Wizard
Shalys was quick to find some cover once Kaltvarr was distracted. While she was all up for buying Finn precious moments to escape his icy prison, she wasn't going to stand around in the open to get battered by icy winds or a hailstorm. She tried to find a snow bank large enough to get cover behind and drew her bowgun out, ready to provide some covering fire. But instead of having to fight Kaltvarr, the elemental told it's story. Shalys wasn't sure if she should take pity on the elemental, or annoyance that he wasn't able to stop this threat before it became their problem, but before she could really make a decision the true perpatrator stood forth.
The possible half-elf person who Shalys had asked Mimi to free stood up and began boasting. He was a Winter Wizard, whatever that was. Likely someone who could very well turn the snow and ice around her to his advantage. Shalys has no idea why he wanted, or what he intended to do. But finally, Shalys could do the one thing that she had been training to do this entire time: Take out a single target. While the dark mage was monologuing, Shalys repositioned herself to remain unseen (Stealth F). She rested low to the ground, bracing her boltgun against her shoulders. Remembering some advice she heard from hunters while she began this journey, she grabbed a handful of snow and put it into her mouth: the snow would make sure that her breath doesn't form any steam and block her view, or provide something for her opponent to see. Carefully loading one of her barbed bolts into her rifle, she took aim at the scholar.
Center of mass, just above the sternum. The kick from her rifle would make her shot go an inch up, so the bolt should go somewhere around his neck. Taking into consideration the windows and the fact she's in a tundra, and thus her gun is very icy, Shalys aimed just a little bit higher to account for the pressure drop. The mage fortunately doesn't seem armored in any way, so this bolt likely won't deflect off anything. The wizard is likely still recovering from his icy prisoner, and if Shalys was really lucky, maybe Mimi broke some of his bones while breaking him free. Shalys would take all of these factors into account for a singular purpose: Sending a bolt right into the head of the mad mage.
The cold, so, so very horrible... Gods... One more moment in that prison and he would've froze... Ah... The pain... But... it had stopped the attack from reaching full effect, he was alive. But... now words were being spoken... Only now after he had been near frozen. But.. at least words were being traded...
Ah... so... a native then... of the frosts, he could have imagined that given what he was, a Elemental.
"A.. protector... You shall remain as one, as will I! I live to chase the dream of peace! Where all can live happily and embrace each other as friend! I hoped to reach out to you, to ask you for aide against the horrors that lurk on the ice! to help bring some damned order to this deathtrap of a glacier! It's but one beginning, a beginning of prosperity... but... no matter what I do... the mad seem keen on taking that advantage for themselves..." he turned eyeing the wizard...
"A winter wizard... That brat had them too... I see... So this place is a play ground of many evils... A great deal needs to be cleansed. they wont be getting away with their crimes any longer!" he grasped his blade with both hands, wincing at the pain in his left. And like before... Where one might choose to thrust and rush ahead, he stabbed the blade once more into the ground.
"WE WILL NOT FALL TO EVIL!" he felt those tendrils of evil try to worm his way into his mind... But he would not fall, he would not break. His was the will that drove him to reach for that unreachable star, his was the Quest that could very well never be achieved.
But he WILL TRY!
Mimi
Mimi made her way back toward the others quickly, a small trail of blood drops from her mangled hands following her. She wouldn't be able to fight like this. Her ears folded and tail drooped as she took a place behind Finn, ready to do whatever she could to help. "I-I'm sorry... I freed him... I was trying to help..."
The air buzzed with tension as Kaltvarr's story unfolded, their breath misting in the chilly atmosphere. A dangerous tableau, pregnant with anticipation, was forming before their eyes.
Finn's proclamation echoed across the icy expanse, his words clear and defiant despite the insidious whispers from the Scriptures of the Frostfall. He thrust his blade into the ground, symbolizing their stand against the creeping evil. His aura flared with brilliant light, illuminating the tundra with a glow that seemed to fight back the growing darkness. The insidious tendrils of the whispers recoiled from the pure, shining energy.
A robust mental shield sprung up around him, a testament to his iron-clad will and resolution. "WE WILL NOT FALL TO EVIL!" His voice cut through the air, shattering the heavy silence. His steadfastness was the beacon against the oncoming storm, a testament to their shared resolve to stand tall against the wicked plans of the dark scholar.
Meanwhile, Shalys worked in the shadows, her actions as swift and silent as a hunting cat. She moved stealthily, positioning herself behind a snowbank, blending in with the icy surroundings. Her boltgun was ready, a lethal tool in the hands of an expert marksman. With a calculating eye, she considered her surroundings, the wind direction, the trajectory of her shot, and the position of her target.
Shalys loaded a barbed bolt into her rifle and aimed at the scholar's chest, accounting for the kickback that would shift her aim upward. With a smooth, practiced motion, she fired, her gaze locked on the target, her intentions clear and deadly.
Mimi, the selfless wolf-girl, was a stark contrast to the rest. With bloody hands and a crestfallen look, she limped over to Finn, her once energetic demeanor replaced by a weary resignation. "I-I'm sorry... I freed him... I was trying to help..." Her voice was soft, barely above a whisper, but her regret echoed loud and clear. However, despite the guilt and the pain, her resolve didn't waver. She stayed close to Finn, her presence a quiet assertion of their shared resolve to stand against the impending winter's end, come what may. Aurora, the caravan master, rushed to Mimi's side, taking Mimi's broken paws into her own. Aurora poured a healing potion over the mangled hands, easing the pain and speeding up the restoration of them.
"Oh little one, your courage is only eclipsed by your purity, your warmth more than the distant sun." Aurora's white furred face twisted into a sad smile, patting Mimi on her shoulders. "I pray you never lose it." Aurora looked to the shining example of Finn's golden light holding back the corrupting whispers of the Scriptures of the Frostfall. "Before his holiness came, I would have never thought it possible."
The scene continued to unfold under the indigo glow of the Scriptures of the Frostfall, the spectral ice casting an otherworldly light upon the frozen tundra. The chaotic aftermath of Kaltvarr's revelations had the caravan members stunned, silent figures in the freezing wind. While the defrosted adventurers were stirring, shaking off the unnatural frost that had held them in stasis, they had not yet fully taken in the gravity of the situation.
Suddenly, the silence was broken by the muted thump of a bowgun firing. From her concealed position, Shalys had taken her shot. The bolt cut through the frigid air with lethal precision, aimed at the unarmored chest of the scholar.
Too engrossed in his malicious gloat, the winter wizard did not notice the silent hunter, his attention focused on the larger threats he could see. It was this overconfidence that was his downfall. The bolt found its mark, striking true with a sickening crunch. The scholar gasped, surprise and pain flashing across his face. The force of the impact knocked him back a step, a hand instinctively rising to his chest.
A collective gasp went up from the caravan, their expressions a mix of shock and horror. The sudden violence had jolted them from their stupor. The adventurers, now fully defrosted, sprung into action, their instincts and training kicking in.
Some moved to protect the non-combatants, forming a defensive line around them. Others moved towards the scholar, weapons drawn and eyes hard. They had heard Kaltvarr's story, and their duty was clear. The scholars' potential allies from the caravan seemed to hesitate, torn between loyalty and the unfolding truth.
In the confusion, one figure remained still, watching the unfolding scene with an impassive expression. Kaltvarr, the elemental prince of frost, watched as the caravan's bonds of unity were tested against the chill of betrayal. His icy gaze settled on the injured scholar, the cause of all this chaos, as he clutched the wound where Shalys's bolt had found its mark.
The tension was palpable, the stillness of the moment shattered by Shaly's effective attack. Now, everyone's eyes were on the scholar, waiting for his response to the sudden turn of events. The icy tundra seemed to hold its breath as the chilling climax drew closer.
The dark scholar reeled from the bolt lodged in his chest, a look of shock and disbelief clouding his face as he fell to his knees. Blood stained his robes, contrasting starkly against the pristine white of the snow.
His lips moved as if to speak, gasping out broken words that seemed to echo through the silent tundra. "I... desired... power..." His voice was raspy, a dying whisper carried away by the icy winds. "But this... this is not... the end..." With these last words, a malicious smirk twisted his features, casting an eerie shadow across his face.
Suddenly, the Scriptures of the Frostfall in his clutch began to glow brighter, its spectral light pulsating in a rhythm akin to a heartbeat. The symbols etched on the cover shimmered and shifted, coming alive with a chilling, dreadful energy. A powerful aura radiated from the tome, as if an ancient, primordial force had been awakened.
The book flew open, its pages flipping wildly, spectral ice and ethereal frost whirling in an ominous cyclone around the scholar. His body convulsed as if possessed, the light in his eyes fading only to be replaced by a spectral indigo glow mirroring the eerie light of the Scriptures.
The transformation was terrifying to behold. The scholar's form blurred and twisted, his body fading into a spectral figure of frost and ice. His form seemed to stretch and distort, growing taller, leaner. Where once stood a man, now stood a ghostly figure radiating cold and malice, a being borne of the eternal winter, a chilling embodiment of the Frostfall.
The spectral frostfall being rose to its full height, the freezing winds swirling around it. Its eyes glowed with an alien intelligence, the same indigo light that illuminated the Scriptures of Frostfall. It seemed to gaze at the terrified onlookers, the malicious smirk still etched onto its spectral face. An aura of dread emanated from it, a palpable sense of impending doom settling onto the tundra.
Suddenly, the creature opened its mouth, emitting a haunting, resonating sound. It wasn't a word or a phrase, but a mournful wail that echoed through the vast tundra, a chilling herald of the eternal winter that was about to descend upon them all.
"....You're serious...?" Another damn thing trying to be this all powerful leech upon the world? "You gave up your humanity... The very spark of any goodness... For this? Power?" The man stood up once more. he grasped his helmet and threw it off, as his tossed locks settled, his gaze fell upon the man... no.. creature. A man who was full of laughter, full of desire to protect and aid, who held nothing more than the righteous path and eponymous Quest that held no true end in his heart. A man who was given a second chance from his mundane life back on earth to ONCE play the hero he always wanted to be.
That man looked upon the creature with nothing more than disdain, and disappointment.
"That's what you needed to feel powerful? You were that weak willed that you gave it all up, the hardwork and effort, and went to steal power? You were so weak willed you had to steal it from another rather than build your own strength. You desired it all with none of the work, none of the struggle, none of the pain. True power is not stolen, true power is built upon, allowed to be helped by others, allowed to be built upon and reinforced by trial after trial. To struggle against failure after failure to reach the heights you dream of?
You think you can stop this dream?
The dream of a brighter tomorrow so you can chew it up and use it for sustenance!?
My armor still shines through the tarnish, I still act as a beacon when it calls foes to me, I still TRUST when they stab me in the back! And what do I do with my strength? I raise others! I CHERISH OTHERS DESPITE MY LOSSES!" he held his sword up aloft, grasping it with his pure arm and the corrupted limb, it seared his grasp but he didn't let go.
"This is your dream?
Prepare to face MINE!"
Dream, the Impossible Dream,
Fight, the Unbeatable Foe,
Bare, with Unbearable Sorrow,
To run, to where the Brave dare not Go.
To right, the Unrightable Wrong,
To be, Better fore than you Are,
To try, when your arms are too Weary,
To reach, that Unreachable Star!
"THIS IS MY QUEST!"
  • The Unreachable Star, Fighting Style B, Area B, Selective B, Holy Affinity F, Drain Strength E, A full power destructive wave against all foes, this ability covers a vast area, whilst being utterly harmless to those deemed ally to the user. A dream ever out of reach. Grade B 4 post cooldown
Shalys Dar’Miam "Hunter"
Location: Caravan
Interactions: Mimi, The Corrupt Wizard
Shalys had hoped her shot would've just killed the man, but evidentially he was made of sterner stuff than most wizards. It helps that shortly after getting shot, his body exploded and he turned into some sort of ice monster. Shalys was going to shoot more bolts at him, but the sudden wind that kicked up would just through off her aim. Now she wasn't too certain if her bolts could even harm the monster. Perhaps her explosive bolts could do something, but she'd have to aim carefully and chances are she still wouldn't get a direct off of him. But maybe she didn't need to. Trying to reposition, Shalys ran up next to Mimi and Aurora. She had a plan. "Mimi, I don't know how much damage I can do, but I'll try to distract him with Finn. I need you to sneak closer and steal the book. Maybe it can be used against him somehow? If nothing else, try to destroy it." Shalys gave Mimi one of her explosive bolts. "These are one of my explosive bolts. See if maybe some of those other travelers know how to deal with this magic, try the elf. If none of them know, use my arrow to destroy the book."
Shalys wished she could have some more time to encourage Mimi, but as she spoke Finn went ahead to engage the mad mage. This was more or less fine, his shouting and powers would make for a good distraction against the mage, and soon Shalys will add to the various annoyances keeping the mage's attention off of Mimi. Loading a few bolts into her bowgun, Shalys moves behind Finn and fires some bolts at the face of the wizard. She didn't want to risk hurting anyone with her blast bolts, so she just relied on making a lot of quick shots at the wizard, aiming at anything solid to distract or even harm him. More importantly, Shalys stayed on the move: Even if this wizard had strong area of effect spells, she will do her best to avoid them and force him to direct his attention either on her, thus allowing everyone else to lay into him, or ignore her to take on more threats, which will allow Shalys more of a chance to line up a critical shot against him. Maybe, like the crow storm she had to fight a few days ago, there would be some sort of strange core or eye in this new form that she could shoot down for massive damage. All the while, she continued that song she started for Finn. She was going to need all the help she can get now, every prayer and wish to make it out of this mess.
A stinging sensation shot through Mimi's hands as the healing potion came into content with her mangled wound covered hands. She bared her fangs and growled lowly, but allowed Aurora to continue uncontested. A moment later the injuries were better, scars and scabs in their place. Mimi's ears perked back up and her tail wagged gently. "Th-thank you." She turned back to the battle taking place, Finn moving to face the new enemy, an aegis of light against the cruel cold dark night. Shalys grabbed her attention and explained her plan. Mimi focused on her and nodded along eager to do her part.
Get the book.
Try to use it to stop the thing.
If that fails, use the bolt to destroy it.
She took the explosive bolt from the Fae and gripped it tight in her hands, pulling it to her chest and nodding resolutely. "I-I'll try my best!" She could do this. She waited until the woman began to fire bolts at the enemy, drawing it's attention, before she ran to the side, attempting to circle the man. She was scared, the sounds the foe made sending chills through her. But the others were depending on her. She did her best to approach unnoticed and when she was within range, she lunged, reaching for the book with an empty hand, the other gripping the bolt tight.
The End
Finn's powerful voice reverberated across the expanse, his words a lighthouse amidst the chilling storm summoned by the Frost Ascendant. His sword, pulsating with divine energy, cut through the gusting winds as he boldly stepped forward. The holy light emanating from him danced around, banishing the creeping shadows of despair and bolstering the courage of the spectators who watched in silent awe.
Behind him, Shalys acted swiftly, her bolts finding their mark with deadly precision. Though they did little to harm the spectral being, they served their purpose in distracting the Ascendant, fragmenting its focus away from Finn and towards her.
Meanwhile, Mimi circled the creature, her movements cautious yet determined. The explosive bolt clutched tight in her hand, her eyes were fixed on the Scriptures of the Frostfall, the source of the frosty transformation.
Finn's assault began with the full fury of a righteous knight. His blade clashed against the ice-encrusted form of the Ascendant, each strike echoing across the desolate tundra. But it was not just Finn's sword that opposed the monstrosity, it was the unwavering conviction behind each swing, the relentless refusal to surrender to despair. His energy resonated with the caravan, their own spirits rising as they drew strength from his unwavering resolve.
Even the elemental Kaltavar watched silently, his swirling icy form a stark contrast against the scene of battle. He had seen many things in his long life, but this... this was a defiance he had not seen before, a defiance against not just a physical enemy, but against the very essence of despair and surrender.
Shalys continued her barrage, drawing the Ascendant's attention further away from Mimi. Her bolts whistled through the air, the sharp tips gleaming ominously under the ethereal light emitted by the spectral Frost Ascendant.
And then, the moment came.
With the Ascendant momentarily distracted, Mimi lunged towards the Scriptures. Her fingers brushed against the freezing surface of the ancient tome, the icy chill nearly unbearable. Yet, there was warmth radiating from her, a warmth born of pure innocence that shone brightly against the icy cold of the Scriptures.
In that moment, the Scriptures seemed to tremble under her touch, as if recognizing the pure innocence emanating from the doggirl. The glowing symbols on the cover began to fade, replaced by a soft, warm light. Slowly but surely, the icy tendrils holding the Ascendant's form together began to dissipate, his form flickering and weakening under the combined efforts of the heroes and Mimi's touch.
With a final, defiant cry, the spectral Frost Ascendant shuddered and collapsed, its form dissolving into a cloud of frost that was quickly swept away by the winds. The Scriptures of the Frostfall, now in Mimi's grasp, was no longer a source of malevolent energy, but rather an ordinary, albeit ancient, tome. The spectral glow had completely disappeared, replaced by the warmth of Mimi's innocence.
The tundra fell silent, the chilling winds finally abating. All eyes were on the spot where the Ascendant had once stood, now empty save for the dissipating cloud of frost. The heroes had triumphed, their indomitable spirit and determination a beacon of hope in the face of despair.
The Scriptures of the Frostfall was freed from its curse, the Frost Ascendant defeated. And amidst the relief and joy that washed over them, they knew that they had not only won a battle, but had also reclaimed hope and faith in the face of the impossible. Their victory served as a beacon, a reminder that even in the harshest winter, the warmth of courage and unity could thaw the coldest hearts.
Mimi braced herself and flinched against the winds as the being dissipated. When it finally relented, she stood there clutching the book in one hand the bolt in the other. She shook the snow off herself and then walked over to Shalys, handing her back her bolt. "Thank you for letting me borrow it! I-I'm not sure what I did, but it seems like your planned worked." She then made her way over to Finn. Her ears folded and her tail drooped as she got near, turning her head to look away and holding the book out to him. "I-I'm not sure what happened, but... I think I broke it when I grabbed it. It seemed like it was dangerous though, so... I don't think I should keep it... Sorry... for breaking it..." As she waited for him to take the book, a wave of sadness came over her. They had stopped the bad guy and soon the caravan would reach it's destination and they would part ways. It had happened so many times since she woke up in the forests of Ryke. She was tired of parting ways, and she had no where else to go. She turned her face to his with a pleding look on it. "C-could I keep traveling with you? I can carry bags! Or keep watch at night... or..." She tried to think of other ways to be useful, but couldn't come up with any.
"...it's done... And not by my hand..." Finn's body finally gave in, and he fell down to his knees, sword clattering to his side as exhaustion takes it's hold. "Maybe abit of rest finally... That'd be... Wonderful... I've let others take my spot on the caravan for abit, best I get some... Oh?" he paused in his words to consider a little friend running up, he rose his hand to grasp the tome... it... felt... lighter than he expected. Like it it's self was getting used to it's new state...
"I think this is the first adventure in awhile that my allies haven't stabbed me in the back.. Minus the hunt with..." he paused to consider mimi's words... And then... got hit with them... The big.. pleading eyes... the big sad puppy eyes. The hope within them practically killed him on the spot.
With his none painful pulsing hand he gave the girl a pat on the head. "Travel with me? Why, that'd be lovely. I've always wanted a friend for the road, it gets boring talking to myself." his smile was warm, his eyes soft... "Little sister, you can join me anytime."
Interactions: Mimi, Finn
Finally at last, the evil wizard was defeated. She'd like to think she managed to hit something that killed it, but as the wind died down she saw Mimi holding the book. Somehow she managed to dispel magic spell. The elemental was gone leaving only the caravan left. Even more of a surprise was that no one died! Well, aside from the wizard. While everyone was either surprised or still worried, Shalys looked to the still frozen bodies and doled out some commands. "We're not done yet! Get those other folks out, but be careful. They might be confused, or violent." That being said, Shalys suddenly is feeling all the accumulated stress and pain from these past few days hit her all at once. She has spent days watching for danger for the caravan, getting everyone to safety, with barely any rest or food. Her hands were shaky, not just from the cold but from the sheer stress of it all. It surprised even her that she's managed to keep a lid on everything.
She needed to destress. And there was really only one way to do that.
As she was talking to the holy warrior, Shayls walked up behind Mimi, rubbing her hands through the dog girl's hair, while giving her a hug. Her cloak wrapped around both their bodies. From what she overheard, Mimi wanted to tag along with Finn. Shalys always thought herself a more lone shooter type... But she honestly wouldn't mind company. They seem like good folks. "Just keep being you, Mimi. That's good enough. But do you mind an extra set of hands? Once I escort this caravan somewhere safe, I wouldn't mind traveling with both of you. As you've seen I'm a good shot, got sharp eyes, and dabble a bit in alchemy. Plus... I like you. Both of you."
Shalys has Attentive Student F, doubling any points she gains for this RP.
