Graded [Falcrum Village] For Whom The Bell Tolls

Gawain
Interaction: saxon saxon conman2163 conman2163

Satisfaction coursed through the entire being that was Gawain as the blade severed through the wall of rats and struck home. Blood coated the tip of the weapon and the ratmancer's voice reeked with shock. The creature had thought itself invincible and learned the folly of it's delusions. While it had not been a fatal strike, or even a seriously damaging one. He had infact wounded the ratmancer and in return invoked it's rage.

The swing of the mace sent Gawain falling backwards into the sea of rats. In a twisted fashion the ratmancer's triumphant insults being hurled at him as the men predicted Gawain's death gave the skeleton an even greater sense of satisfaction. Even as the rats scurried around hi9m attempting to devour him, there was no meat for them to find. Nor could they drown him in a see of filth and fur. He had no lungs to deny air. So it was that Gawain was ready to move when the explosion went off.

Being buried by rats the Skelton was freed when the explosion of light vaporized the critters from existence. Scrambling to his feet he followed the romans and went in for his own swing. They would fell the villain here and now or die trying.

As the Kellum's eyes returned to normal joined the legionaries and the knight as they all rushed the ratmancer as she was still rubbing his eyes. By looks of the man's skin he was pale and probably didn't see very much bright light to say the least. By the time he could see it would already be too late at the group quickly dogged him and stabbed him. The last thing he managed to get out was the screams from his wounds though even that faded into silence.

With the threat seemingly ended Kellum put the halberd against the wall and a split second later Chisato returned to her human form. "Well now, I hope we don't ever see this place again its a smell, look at all these dead rats!" Chisato stated as she stayed in the area that was clear of the rats. She gave Kellum a death glare for a moment as she simply shrugged his head.

"Lucius you don't have any more torches do you? We should burn these corpses down here don't want the town above to smell like decaying flesh especially with all these dead rats," Kellum pointed out as he checked the lantern for a moment it still had some fuel left before it would go out completely. But at least now the rats seemed to be dealt with now that their master was killed.

"Can we please get out of here!?" Chisato pleaded as she hugged the wall causing Kellum to roll his eyes for a moment before smirking. As much as she tried to keep up that calm and collected appearance of hers the more it was undone by the rats.

"Fine, Fine, I trust you two can burn the rat corpses and the mans down here, I will go up with Chisato and see how the others are doing. But I think the rat problem is solved but I would keep a light source just in case while you're down here," Kellum suggested before walking over to Chisato and offering her a piggyback ride. After which he started to make his way back down the path they had followed when they arrived.

After a few moments, the reached the well and they both made their way to the top. When they got back up the light circle was still active and the people that were left above ground were untouched. It looked like all the attention had been on them underground. "Well Doctor, the rat problem has been dealt with someone with the ability to control rats had an issue with the town it seems. He's dead now so Doctor Mord I believe the others will be wanting their payment when they get up here," Kellum stated as Doctor Mord stood up and set three more bags on the table.

The knight reappeared suddenly from within the horde of rats and along with the legionaries dogpiled the ratmancer. He went down in a welter of gore and viscera. A stab to the throat from a gladius quickly cut off his screams almost as quickly as they had begun. They stood around panting, and Lucius looked over the horde of dead rats. The man closed his eyes shook his head. He swore if he ever saw another Ratmancer again he'd have to at least punch them in the nose. Nothing good could come from magically enchanting rats. They had been lucky that this man had been stopped so easily. If he had ascended he could have become a rat king, and that would have been much worse than a ratmancer.

Lucius didn't have another torch but thankfully he figured the fur of the animals would do to get things started. There was such a large amount of them that he had no doubt it would act as adequate kindling. He took some time to kneel down next to the pile of the dead vermin and use his fire kit to spark a flame into life. It quickly leapt and spread over the great horde and soon the cavern was filled with the stench of burning rat. He muttered a prayer to Mars, hopefully he liked the smell of burning rodent. Then he left the cavern shortly after he started the fire and climbed back to the surface. Once there he made his way over to the doctor and shrugged. "Those tunnels looked like they stretched for a while. I wouldn't be surprised if there were disappearances all over this region that could be traced back to here." He looked around at the ruined village and folded his arms. Then he looked over at the group of legionares waiting nearby and nodded to himself. He then turned to address Kellum, Chisato, and the doctor. "I plan to stick around a while and maybe rebuild a little. Who knows, maybe someone made it away and will return to their homes in time. Aside from that there is dead to be buried, these people deserve a decent resting place." He took the pouch of coins from earlier from his belt and combined it with the new pouch and knelt before the little girl. He placed the sack of coins in her hands. "Take this, you're welcome to stay if you like, i'd be happy to care for you. But wherever you go this will help." He stood up afterwards and turned to go get started on the task of burying the dead. His legionaries would follow. He didn't want to leave the girl without anything. Coin wouldn't replace her parents but it would at least help her get a new start.

They had done it, wit ha barrage of swipes and stabs the ratmancer had been felled by the combined force of the romans and Gawain. After a few good screams the old man fell silent and Gawain stepped back to observe there handiwork. The villain was certainly dead, a fact solidified by the weapon Kellum wielded turning back to Chisato. Once more the question of whether she was a weapon that tunred into a girl or a girl that turned into a weapon popped into his mind. While it wasn't important he was curious. Of course it was rather rude to ask, so possibly next time he would ask, that was if he ever saw them again.

While the two adventures climbed back up and the romans burned the body, Gawain inspected armor. He felt a ping of annoyance and disappointment at the fact his armor broke. It wasn't easy to find a blacksmith that could repair his armor. Especially due to his condition of being undead. It was something he would have to worry about later. Looking up he saw the romans had finished and were surfacing, so the skeleton knight followed after.

Emerging onto the surface, he sheathed his blade and looked around. Kellum and Chisato were speaking with the doctor, while the romans seemed preoccupied with the little girl from earlier. Taking this as his que the knight turned on his heels and began his departure from the village. He didn't have much need for money after all.

Aftermath
The village has been cleared and freed from the ratmancer or whatever he was, the legionaries remained in the village for a few more days to bury the bodies of the dead. Doctor Mord, Kellum, Chisato, and the girl returned to Ryken to await the next time they were itching to go on another adventure. The village for the most part was intact, though the skeletons would no doubt attract wild animals. A few houses were burned in the attack and no doubt the tunnels would become a concern sooner or later to whomever decided to stay there. All the while the village now stood abandoned.

Well I hope you all have fun!

A mystery. A foreboding feel. Another village bites the dust. These poor villages. They sure don't last in IH. In solving the mystery, the party heroically faces the source of the problem. A few npcs for the purposes of plot, but not overbearing or hogging spotlight is good too. Note the orphan girl asset is background

Aftermath
The village, with next to no surviving residents, had become a point of interest for refugees elsewhere in Ryke. An abandoned village with most of its buildings intact seemed ideal for a caravan of peasants to take over. Within a month of news that the village had been resolved of its Ratmancer problem, a caravan arrived with supplies, and a multitude of people and families to re establish the village.
