Ambrose
1670695180699.png
He was just as shocked as everyone else when the wires became known to the group. Ambrose's eyes narrowed upon the thin threads and even then he could barely see them hanging in the air. "I guess my singing voice isn't what it used to be." Ambrose joked while he rubbed the back of hi s head. But his joke was ill timed it seemed as the wires became a proper threat. Ambrose ducked down and wrapped his arms around the cat shaped lump in his jacket pocket, hugging the feline. When he opened his eyes again he first sight was the bleeding arm of the woman Shea. "Holy shit." he stood up and stepped back out of fear and caution. "That could have been..."

Ambrose looked around at everyone. "...all of us. Sorry everyone." His poor scouting could have gotten them killed. They were lucky to have Zin and his skills of perception on their side.

"What should we do? There will definitely be more of those traps up ahead and next time we might not be so lucky." His attention shifted to Cleo and then back to Zin and Shea. No way was he going to risk him and Ravenna getting sliced into cubes.

The priest follow down the group, slowly as she held the torch given to her. The dark somber hall seeming to stretch for what seem a eternity for her. But maybe was not reality, her breath shallow and eyes darting from left to right, watching and anxious at the place. But soon as they were told to stop, soon saw the wires, this was the warning she was given. Her whiten out eyes looking near at the wires that stretch far. But soon being knock out from the trance hearing a yell to look out, she intensively dropped to the ground seeing how the walls gashed themselfs, as if a blade was struck against them. Vulture repeated the notion she had in mind: could have been all of us.

"By the divine..." Murmured to herself in fear at the lash that nearly killed them, but fear was set aside as she saw Shea injured from the sudden ordeal. The red taint reflecting from the small lights emanating from the torches. The priest, nearly crawling across the ground hoping to evade any more invisible strings, went towards Shea "Fear not, Relax, i can help you with this." Soon reaching her, the priest clasp her hands together as a green glow began to funnel down her palms, closing both hands on the wounds as inaudible prayers were spoken. It might not heal it fully, but it should stop the bleeding.

As Eleca did her work her sight shifted to the rest, especially vulture after is concerns : "The vision i had makes sense now: feather and the web-...we must tread carefully if we are to continue in order to prevent this. Recklessness would get us killed...what worries me more....is whatever is here, might already knows where we are exactly." The priest was clearly a bit shaken up, keeping a steady deep breath hoping to relax. It was so sudden, no warning. Unable to blame Shea fully for the happening as, she like the rest, seem very unaware of the true nature of these webs, but now they know.

As soon as Zin called out, the escorts dragged Cleo downwards to the ground as well, with the one nearby using their body to cover Cleo from harm. Thankfully, the wires did not reach far back and only managed to hit Shea. Most of the wires that had been blocking the hallway seemed to have been cleared, presumably the wires that were set off and struck the walls earlier. "This is getting too dangerous." He remarked. "We are to retreat. We need to prepare-" However, when he turned around, his eyes widened in surprise. "What..." When he looked at the entrance behind him, what was a path of safety now become riddled with wires, so densely packed that it has become a wall of white silk. The entrance has been blocked off.

Just as Cleo's situation dawned upon him, a voice echoed throughout the hallway. "Hello! It's quite surprising to see a company privately deal with matters like this." The voice spoke, which seemed to be originating in the darkness at the end of the hallway. "Then again, it's not that surprising when I was told beforehand." The voice spoke . "However, you hired some pretty competent people! That trap should've offed at least one of you, but you are all still alive." It sighed. "Frankly, I'm only paid to keep you guys out. You can leave if you wish." The voice admitted, but soon a laugh could be heard. "That is, if you can get out at all."

Shea gritted her teeth as she let Elecal heal her "Thank you. It still hurts like hell, but I'm better now." She reached out her hand and summoned her magic shield again. This time, it was visibly dimmer than it was before, causing Shea to click her tongue. "That did a number on my shield. If I tried to block the wires again, I'm afraid it will thoroughly cut off my arm." Zin's glare was clear and hostile, pointed at the end of the hallway. "The way had been cleared, and I can see the next room. However, I am unsure about where the rest of the wires are seated." His eyes had become much more cautious than before, refusing to leave anything unnoticed.

For Elecal, she would suddenly feel a gaze when voice started to talk. The others wouldn't notice, but for her it was an unmistakable gaze. The danger has spiked. The Prisoner has become excited for your demise.

Cleo clicked his tongue, frustration finally apparent on his face. He took out a hand crossbow from one of the escort's bag and handed it to Zin. "You are the one with the best eyes among us. If you can, shoot the wires down." He then handed over a quiver of bolts to him. His gaze then turned forward. "We are going to move forward. Mr. Vulture and Ms. Elecal, please stay close with me. Guards, with us." The escorts nodded their head and surrounded Cleo, Ambrose, and Elecal.

The idea of retreating resonated with the vagabond as he looked back down the path that they had come. Getting out of here with Ravenna sounded like the best idea, but before they could even move to escape, a voice spoke out to them in a threatening tone.

1671295226618.pngHe hadn't scouted the entire location so it was possible that he had missed the person, but their words were so clear to them. How far away were they? When it was decided that they would be continuing on, Ambrose pulled the black cat from inside his jacket and set her down on the floor. "Stay here..." He insisted as he pointed to the ground in front of her. "...and I'll get you two bottles of milk instead of one when this is all over." His bribe seemed to work as Ravenna curled up and laid down right where he had left her. "Thanks girl."

Ambrose turned back to the rest of the group and shoved his hands in his pockets. "Hey sword boy." He called to Zin. "I can help cut the wires if you can point them out for me. Save your bolts for the enemy." Truth be told his voice needed the warm up and the practice, but he also didn't want people wasting their ammo when they didn't know what they were up against.

"Sound good?" Ambrose asked as she moved to walk up front with Zin and Shea.

Zin nodded to Ambrose' suggestion as the group began to move forward, passing by an empty room. "Ah, you chose to advance I see! Well then, good luck!" The voice spoke, before silence engulfed the area. Using the torches, the group carefully treaded across the corridors, and once another set of wires were spotted, Zin signaled for Ambrose to do his thing. With a nod, Ambrose cleared his throat, and after a while, a high-pitched voice pierced the path before them. Countless slashes could be seen cutting the wires, and in turn turned the walls, ceiling, and floor into a mess of cuts and rubble. "W-what?!" The voice once again made itself known. "My traps! Damn you!"

In that moment, Zin paused and warned everyone else. "I hear sounds coming from behind us and in front of us!" Just as he finished his sentence, clacking from what sounded like wood could be heard. The escorts raised their torch, only to find puppets come out from the empty room they just went past and the next empty room over. They were featureless dolls, mannequins meant to be used as a display for fashion. However, instead of forearms, what was clearly evident on their limbs was the glisten of a sickle-like blade. "They hid those under the tarps?" Ambrose remarked, realizing why there were a lot of tarps. Cleo then pulled both Ambrose and Elecal close to him. "Guards, do your job." The escorts nodded.

"It's really funny, Blue Quill. Where did you find these people?" The voice asked as if frustrated. "But it's getting annoying how you keep living despite my wires. Maybe it's time for a hands-on approach!" With that declaration, the puppets began their nimble assault. The first puppet behind them approached by climbing to the ceiling, and the second puppet went on all fours and quickly crawled towards the group. Shea and a few of the escorts faced the first puppet, while the Zin and the rest faced the second puppet. The puppets tried to lodge themselves between to reach the people in the center, but they were stopped with shields.

Eleca followed, close to the harden shield and sharpen blades of the guards as the time beckon for danger. The bladed wires seeping worries in to the priestess. The simple fact such a small and invisible line could rip the head from its post with such ease. Each step was a echo and a worry. The voice made it worse as it if knew the ground they stand, just like she suspected. Like a spider on its web: the smallest vibrations upon the web would alert it. But was worse, was something near.

A gaze fell upon her, one with no eyes. The priest seemingly stared around her, up the walls, ceiling and around. Fragile hands gripping the holy insignia tied around a neck that could so easily be snapped from its stomp. Her breath slowed, its best to calm down, following closer to Cleo and the guards "It sees me Captain....It sees US, I feel its gaze-" She was cut short, Vulture speaking and not long after, what seam his voice echoed through the cavernous like hallway, wires sliced and torn.

It seem the end of it, but, the voice's anger and disappointment was clear and it seems the battle was not yet done. Room before and upon them seemingly holding a wooden mannequin under taps that stumbles out, bladed and a puppet under the wires of its master, Or so she thought. A reality that has yet to be known. "Captain, These are clearly under the voice's control, who ever it is. Maybe wires hold those...THING as well?" Remarking, it's all a possibility and a weakness that could be exploited.

Wood wrenching and creaking, one of the mannequins scoundrel towards the ceiling in it's horrendous sight. An inhumane display. The other charged directly to the shielded men. Eleca knew these beings would cause some problems and she knew she had to somehow help. With gritted teeth and a deep breath, anxious of what was happening, released from Cleo's grasp. The priestess quickly took a few long steps towards Zin, Stretching her hand out as she prayed under her breath. Her glowing hand landing on his shoulder. She knew these wooden "toys" wanted nothing but her,Cleo and Ambrose, a clear point of weakness. But if the defense could last longer, that would be no worry. The armored guards should have a easier confrontation.

A green aura flowed through Zin from his shoulder and his body. Veins dimming green with each pulse of his heart. "Won't dull the pain, But dont worry of the injuries Friend" The priest said quickly taking a jolt back, wishing to keep distance from the fight. But being not so nimble, as she took a step back, her balance lost its grip from the flooring, falling down on her back. Instincts, flight or fight kicked in even after a hit on the back of her head. Hands gripping what she could and crawling back, hoping to stay away. These wood mannequins do not need obey human limits, she rather not know there extent first hand.

"Figured as much!" Cleo responded to Elecal, unaware to her deeper implications. "Swing around it! Maybe it will cut their wires!" One of the escorts grunted as their sword swung above the head of the puppet. Instead of the usual snapping of a wire, what the whole group saw were magical purple wires pulsating after the blade went through past them. A single moment passed, and the wires were invisible again. "Ha! You were right with the wires!" The voice answered. "But you'd be wrong if I'll let you cut them down easily!" The puppet immediately thrusted its blade inside the momentary opening the escort provided, nicking Zin in the arm.

"Ms. Elecal!" Cleo yelled as she moved closer to offer help to the frontline. Zin's breath audibly relaxed as the spell reinvigorated him, and the nick on his arm visibly closed. "Thank you...!" Zin offhandedly responded as he dexterously deflected the puppet's limb out of the shield formation with his dagger. However, the puppet used its other arm to strike from an unexpected angle, aiming precisely for Elecal. Fortunately, Elecal stumbling down to the ground caused the puppet to narrowly miss her, before Zin could strike the puppet back a distance from the defense line. "Be careful!" Cleo warned as he helped Elecal back up.

At the back, the puppet in the ceiling jumped down in a bid to bypass the shields below and straight into the center. "No you don't!" Shea's shield glowed bright as a burst of blue light illuminated the area. The puppet, in mid air, was suddenly pushed back into the far fringes of what the light could reach. It fell with a loud clacking, but stood up nonetheless. It was clear from the short confrontation that the puppets were just that, puppets. Although their deadliness was born from their swiftness and unnatural dexterity, their frames were still made from weak wood. "Come on! Die already!" Along with the voice's frustration, another puppet came dashing towards the group from the front.

"We can't stay like this! Push forward! Shea and Zin, switch! For the rest, advance!" Cleo commanded, his voice wavering from usual. It was his first time commanding in a tense combat situation. As a merchant who only dealt with veiled words as weapons, this was a stressful situation that he could not adapt properly. Shea and Zin shuffled and switched without hesitation, and Shea began to lead the formation in earnest. "Give me a few more moments! Afterwards, trust in me and keep up!" Shea declared as she fended off another one of the puppet's attacks. Cleo affirmed before looking at Ambrose and Elecal. "You heard her, we need to defend for a while. Ms. Elecal, please keep them in top shape! My escort will defend you as you do so." The escort that has been near Cleo stepped froward, raising his shield to protect Elecal from stray attacks from the puppets.

All seem so quick, a flash in the nick of time. The priestess was nearly gashed like flayed meat from the bladed wood hand and it was thanks to her fall. Being helped up she quickly stood, a sudden bright flash came from the back and the priest turn to see as the puppet and its wooden visage was thrown across the piled ground. But it was not enough as it stood with no pain and no care in the world ready to come back once more. Looking over towards cleo as he commanded the assignment , this was a game of chess where one wrong move could break the board easily as it came to be. She could hear the stress in his voice and she to was already buckling from all that was happening.

White garbed woman felt she could not do much but make sure those near her could stand high and fend off these wooden abomination. She was not useless but the fact she could not lay hand side by side made her feel slightly underwhelming. Her stress did not help but standing strong beside all of them was the best she could do. Soon hearing the orders of Cleo, she nodded "I will do my best Captain. I assure you none will die today." With the statement, she felt secure and able. It was true they had to keep going, stopping right now could landslide in to certain demise. The priest stood behind, holy symbol tightly in her grasp as she softly prayed under her breath as she followed the march.

Her prayers seeming more as ready to lay help in those who need, looking over towards zin as the man was still under the effects of her spell could handle himself for a good while. Her eyes laid on the front with shea and the guards. "Fiendish....Wooden marionettes, the wires are steadfast to the blades. My hopes lay upon the fact there are not more of them. It still confuses me captain, why the people?" the priest vaguely asked rather worried, seeming rather unable to comprehend why these innocent people were dragged here. Her thought could only think of darker arts. It was rather obvious, such a person or being taking advantage of the slums and poor like this for its own gain.

"Their purpose still eludes me, Ms. Elecal..." Cleo responded, still unable to make heads or tails of the current situation. "I merely thought of this as something of a small operation, a business on the side. A simple case of abusive business!" His gaze intensified at the darkness in front of them. "To think that they would hire such resistance! This is not a simple matter anymore!" Elecal would find that Cleo had become remorseful. "I had thought there would be little risk involved, but I had involved you all in an unnecessary predicament. For that, I sincerely apologize." He regretfully spoke. "However, I will take responsibility. No matter what, I will make sure you will all get out of here." His eyes darted around, trying to find something he could help with, but his vision failed to find anything. "Curses! Useless eyes!" He clicked his tongue in frustration. "Mr. Ambrose, please scout ahead again!"

With a nod, Ambrose once again cleared his throat, and yelled with melody towards the front. After a single moment, Ambrose whipped his head back with a great expression. "I found the puppeteer!" As soon as Ambrose said that, the voice once again rang in the hallway. "Damn you! Damn all of you! Why are you all even working under that guy?! He's a merchant! A worshipper of coin!" The vitriol in the voice's tone caused Cleo to harden his expression, but he was once again astonished as he heard more wood clacking towards the front. "Do you guys really think he's here to just rescue these pathetic fucks?! He will do the same to these people! You will change nothing bringing them to him!" Two more puppets emerged from the darkness at the front, clamoring to get towards the group.

"Please, hold on a little bit more!" Shea would shout as her shield began to glow brighter and brighter. However, time would be against the group as the puppets were far too fast as they collided with the defense line. Blades whirled and struck Shea and the Escorts, with some of them spilling fresh blood and splattering it into the ground. "Ghgk!" Shea gritted her teeth as one struck her arm. The other escorts grunted from the pain, and puppet managed to land a single blow towards the side of one of them. It pierced through his armor, but it was thankfully a shallow wound. The escort manage to get himself in a steady position again before bashing the puppet back from the defense line.

As for Zin, one puppet could only do so much before it began to take damage. "Hang on! We'll be done with this in a moment!"

The situation escalated, Elecal would feel the gaze intensifying. She would notice it as a hallucination, but this one was less subtle than the usual. She could see eyes. On the darkness in front of them, there was one singular large eye looking down upon her, cold and imposing. On the puppets were similar one eyes, all seemingly focusing on herself. She knew that they were nothing but illusions, tricks of the mind, as The Prisoner could still not influence reality to this extent. However, she would feel a gnawing feeling within her. She would feel a subtle tightening grip on her shoulder. Although she couldn't see it, she could feel it. A sneer, a display of mockery, that thing is laughing at her.

The priest laid her ears and heard the poor man having such regrets, a simple deed now turn in to a battle for life and death. Far from what it was expected and she agreed, a simple job now turn in to a mockery and fearful experience that is somewhat a first for the priest. "I appreciate the apology captain but that shall wait, our lives are on the line. If escape was a option, i personally would have ignored it and stayed with all here" The priest testified with great endurance, her voice slightly fearful "This...THING Cannot be left here, A rotten root upon a dying tree that needs to be cut. The slums are already under their own stress and problems. But this? must be removed" With a stern statement, Eleca sealed her mind upon it. A macabre of a person- no, THING, Taking upon such a disgusting advantage against the already weak people. This display made eleca rather sick at the thought.

But as soon ambrose announce the fact the puppeteer was found, the priest slightly smiled, her face, sadly, still showing the anxious feeling from all that is going on . Hearing the voice, Eleca felt slightly brave and decided to answer "A worshiper of the coin?! Silence you wretched abomination! If the good of the people where in your vision, how can this be your response?! The slums weigh upon many, yet you are quick to flay the throat of others who interfere! We let them LIVE when they raised blades upon us in your name...yet YOU?! Death is your answer? That is enough of a clear answer to me! I will not hear no more of you!" But her response was quickly silenced. two more wooden atrocities charged forward and temporarily broke through. Gritted teeth she quickly rushed towards both shea and the escort.

"This just makes my point more clear.....answers' with death" The priest quickly looked over both Shea and the escort. Shea was struck in the arm and the escort on the side. She could only help one at this time. Looking over the escort the priest stated "Shea please hold on!" The priest soon reached towards the escorts side and placed her hand as she began to chant softly the prayers as she casted her spell upon his wounds. She deduced that shea could hold on for a second as her injury would be less impactful as one to the escorts side who needed could weaken the defence greatly, especially the weight of his equipment. With the spell casted the priest stood next to shea staying close to her as much she could without putting herself in danger. "I am by your side, don't kneel yet Shea"

"Fools, that's what you are!" The voice shouted as the puppets continued their assault. As the conflict progressed, Cleo was finally able to see that Elecal seemed to be fending off something. Not physically like the others, but something seems to be gnawing on her mind. Cleo assumed that the current situation was beginning to take toll to everyone involved, since he knew he too had his heart shaking from nervousness. Yet, he could only grit his teeth. He could only trust those he hired.

Zin finally put the puppet behind them down, its limbs broken down into nothing but scrap, before going to the front to assist the frontline. The escort gave Elecal an appreciative nod as he continued to defend. Shea nodded her head to Elecal. "Do not worry about me! I'm sturdier than you think!" She smiled, before grunting from another strike. Her expression hardened as she prepared for her final move.

"On me!" Shea powerfully declared, illuminating the hallway with warm blue light. It blinded the group, as well as whoever was watching them. "W-what the?!" As the blue light disappeared just as fast as it appeared, a giant shield of light stood between the group and the puppets, covering the entire hallway and blocking the front from ever moving beyond it. Cleo recognized Shea's intention, before commanding with vigor. "Breakthrough!" Shea steadied her posture, before pushing against the puppets. "Haaaahhh!" With a shout, she began charging, bringing along with her the puppets in front. "W-wait! Stop!" Unfortunately for the voice, the puppets were being pushed back despite struggling to pierce through the shield. Eventually, she arrived at the next Wire Trap. This time, the puppets were on the receiving end.

"No!" The traps set off, and merciless sounds of breaking material and crumbling stone resonated throughout the place. The puppets were cut into numerous pieces before falling down lifelessly. The shield fluctuated and held on as the strikes continued, but unlike before, someone had to pay the price. "Urgh!" Shea's body immediately become riddled with wounds as blood splattered. Almost immediately as the trap stopped, the shield went away and Shea began to fall.

"Ms. Shea!" Cleo called out. "Shea!" Zin yelled as he caught her body.

"Damn it!" The voice frustratingly spoke, but it was now clearer that it was quieter than before. If the group would look forward with their torches, they would see a robed figure hanging from the ceiling. Purple magic threads held the figure afloat, but what appeared before them was something sinister. The figure was a man, devoid of life and with hollowed eyes, but what was most apparent was the pulsating purple veins all over it. Its expression seemed annoyed at the success of the group as he growled. "Playing hero, are we?" However, he seemed limp and incapable of defending himself.

Cleo sharpened his gaze towards the figure as Zin brought Shea towards Elecal. The escorts took the front, defending once again.

Elecal would see something similar, only that it juxtaposed the eye in the darkness beyond the figure, almost as if the figure became the eye's pupil itself.

Eleca trusted Shea, but the priest felt her fear slight fade away, especially how her bravery brings her far, this woman was brave even at the hands of danger. An admiration. Feeling stalwart she stood with Cleo and behind the forward guard as shea did her magical shield of sorts. Pushing through with rather ease and the puppets seeming to have a taste of their own medicine. But it was without a cost, the poor woman after her charge, was not, sliced and cut in all places like razor sharp swords slicing through her in all places. "By the great above! Shea!" The priest immediately laid hands upon the brave woman "By the god's blessed sight, heal thy wounds in my call of plight, for this is my holy rite to restore her might, As i call to you in this accursed night!" The priest prayed loudly instead of her usually whispers, Casting rejuvenation. As she did, This gnawing feeling was there....it starred.

Once all was done and the rejuvenation would slowly heal Shea....She slowly stood up as she gazed towards the figure. Her breath becoming shallow realizing what was truly at hand. She just softly asked in complete aw and more now more anxious than ever "What in the great gods above ARE you?" The priest seemed frozen at the metaphorical and, rather literal, sight that this hung man seems nothing but a extencion of...whatever is going on here. Now looking towards beyond the figure, to this invisible force she is unable to comprehend. "I may feel fear but my soul will remain iron willed, unlike whatever is happening here!" The priest seem to echo in slight panic but began to take breaths at the situation. But this man-- no this CORPSE, This was no man, seem to work as a mere signal to the true power that hides beyond? whatever it is. Or this man gave all for this power and now is but hanged, weaken and these puppets are its power.

Questions flutter in the priest...How did it hire the people of the slums? This man cannot leave like this, maybe there are servants? Others? Illusions? She did not know and might not never know. But right now, this had to end one way or another. They have come across something far, FAR worse than she ever thought. The plaything for dark arts. Possibly corruption? The implications this could bring can be serious, It can't be left here. The priest mind only wander at the fact, what if the city's order and nobles knew of this??

With deep breath she looked over at Cleo, trying her best to calm down "Sir, That man- no that THING! we must act with haste. Whatever this THING is, its dark. Through the halls it watched me- No US! i felt its gaze and now...It stares back. I doubt that defiled man is but....still human. We must act with haste, i doubt such magic is guarded by just two wooden marionettes." With that, the priest stood near the wounded shea unwilling to move away from her, This woman gave her all in bravery so they could make it here. Eleca would not coward away even if this...FIEND of a abomination loomed. It was weak....but she did not know what to do...All she could think of is cut it down and, hopefully, that would sever the ties of whatever power flows here.

"Thank you..." Shea thanked weakly as she laid in Zin's arms, her eyes filled with gratitude for Elecal. "It's really soothing- Ah fuck, it stings. And its starting to get itchy!" Her face began to contort into frustration once the magic accelerated her natural healing. "Ah gods, it so itchy!" She exclaimed, but could do nothing as she wriggled in discomfort. "Endure it, you child." Zin spoke as he turned his head towards Elecal. "Thank you. Your presence and magic greatly helped." He sincerely bowed as he helped Shea up.

"Calm down, Ms. Elecal." Cleo spoke, trying to pacify her. She was clearly starting to feel threatened, even though most physical threats have been dealt with. He was no doctor, so he couldn't find the right words to calm Elecal down. He looked at the corpse, then at the darkness before it. However, his eyes failed to pick up anything significant. He couldn't ignore the words of Elecal, the priest, either, so he tried to reassure her. "Nothing too abnormal is happening yet. Mr. Zin would've warned us beforehand if something really is lurking." As he finished his sentence, the corpse once again spoke.

"What am I?" It asked, scoffing. "A disgraceful bastard who had sold himself to demons..." he slightly turned its head towards Cleo "...and monsters." His gaze swept through the group as he continued. "But that does not matter now. What matters is that I've failed to keep the end of my bargain, and I won't be paid by the damned Gerdrant Company."

"Gerdrant Company?" Cleo inquired, his expression now full of realization.

"My contractor, my client." He clarified, looking up at the ceiling in exasperation. "But now it's fuck all, and I couldn't care less about keeping secrets." He sighed, before looking back at the group. He intoned in annoyance. "And no, this is just a husk I'm using, a mere relay for my power." He informed, as if knowing the thoughts of both Cleo and Elecal. "Did you expect a puppet master to expose themselves to danger? I think not." The corpse paused for a moment, before speaking again. "If you want it done, just do it. You're wasting my time."

Cleo nodded his head towards Elecal. He then looked at the corpse before them. "Fiend, you have threatened our lives. Although it is not within my jurisdiction, I shall-"

"Spare me the theatrics, merchant. Make it quick." He grumbled. Cleo shut his mouth, before commanding an escort to do the job. The escort unsheathed their blade and approached the corpse. "There will come a time you will realize the choices you've made have dire consequences. All of you." He said as he turned his head to each and everyone in the group. He then stopped at Elecal. "Especially you, child." Before the sword would cut him down, his head turned towards Elecal, its hollow eyesockets staring into her very soul. "It will see you, very soon." The escort struck the corpse with power, up from its shoulder down to its legs, slicing it like cutting paper. It began to disintegrate as it spoke once again. "May your path be thorned, and your life weary." As the wind carried its voice, the specks of that thing finally disappeared into nothingness.

Elcal felt the sinister gaze slowly recede, but as it did so, it continued to laugh in mockery. Eventually, the pressure disappeared completely, and everything was back to relative normalcy. At least, normal for Elecal's current situation.

"We've averted the crisis." Cleo declared, finally exhaling the reservations and anxiousness he's had for quite a while now. The shaking from his hands was blatantly obvious, but it was clear that he was trying his best to keep composure despite relief. "Be steadfast, Ms. Elecal. The worst of it has passed." He tried to reassure, but his words didn't have the confidence that it used to have before. He faced the rest of the group. "There's only one more thing left to do. Let us make haste. Mr. Vulture?"

"Got it." Ambrose once again voiced his scouting magic, before looking back at the group. "The stairs is just up ahead. Follow me."

Cleo would gesture for the others as he followed Ambrose.

She stayed next to Shea as Cleo spoke towards her trying to calm her down, nodding, but she knew more, this dam thing, she FEELS it. But it was just her and Cleo was right, nothing has actually happened as they got here, just this hanging man, this...Thing. "I am sorry captain, the situation is overwhelming" But soon the THING spoke once more. She was right, this was a fiend, even do was rather obvious but now, it was marked and true. She softly hum under her voice prayers, not for him but for the group. This man sold its very life away, there was nothing she could do, but wish its existence' to be smited and cleansed from this world. But now she knew who this man source itself to. A mental note she should remember.

Here eyes stared at this fiend, not answering, just watching as it mocked her how they would meet very soon. The priest merely stood there looking, as the once vassal now slowly, dead and turning nothing but to dust, disintegrated. Gripping the covered book on her side. Its black pages hiding by mere leather coverings and holy symbolism adorning its cover. This had not to be any coincidence, at all. It was to on point. Even if it was not, it sent chills down her spine at the dark fact she clings to, a reminder that she rather keep to herself for now. She Nodded towards Cleo and clear her throat. "Yes it has captain." Standing by side of the men, she followed looking back. Realizing how....she must find a tutor to take her hand and teach her in ways of battle. Her life would end so easily without proper training and today, marks the day, if it was not for these brave people taking the battle by her stead. Eleca would have not made it far, at all.

Hearing Ambrose announce the stairwell are near, with a nod and reassuring feeling after its all over, but won't be over until she sees the sky once more. As they walked she looked over Cleo "Its been...a rather intense time, it feels rather eternal, thought would never end." Surprised she softly added "And this turned out....a lot more than anyone thought would be, it was a honor Cleo and well" She looked At the rest,Shea,Zil,The guards, Sir Vulture. "Everyone else, glad we all made it out. Especially shea, she should rest after all this so the spell may aid her completely. Straining to much is not advisable"

Cleo weakly chuckled. "Right, it really did feel like an eternity..." Staring at my own death... He spoke, keeping the last half of his words to himself. He had no business trying so hard as a merchant being a half-assed vigilante schmuck. This one encounter alone had changed his perspective on his values on life, and the importance of warfare. Although he disliked violent confrontations, especially one that could spell the death of people, he found the necessity of it. He was rather glad he invested in procuring escorts to safeguard him, but he will eventually have to expand his security for his company. Especially, that another company had begun their watch over his own. It's that, or he will have to acquire his own means of combat.

He turned his head towards the others. "Rest assured, you all did a fine job. You will be handsomely rewarded, especially you Shea. Use it for recuperation."

"Thanks boss. Though, I just really want an immediate solution to this itching problem I'm having." Shea spoke, soflty scratching exposed and uninjured skin wherever she could. "Buy an ointment later." Zin commented as he supported Shea in their walk. "I said an immediate solution." Shea grumbled. "The priest kindly healed you. Your complaints are only going to become an insult at this point." Zin scolded Shea, to which she hurriedly faced Elecal. "A-ah, my bad. Don't mind my chatter, Ms. Elecal. I'm just a little vocal on some things, that's all." She tried to defend herself as she awkwardly chuckled.

Cleo faintly smiled, before looking back at Elecal. "And you, Ms. Elecal, I'd like to pay your church a visit some time." He chuckled again, this time with a bit more life in his voice. "Your contributions are astounding with your healing. I am grateful, and it's only right I pay my thanks to you and your god, for guiding you to us." He nodded at Elecal, before looking forward once again.

As the finally reached the end of the stairs, the group sees what essentially is the last floor of the place. It was a spacious room, with two entrances leading to somewhere else. The peculiar thing was that the entrances seemed to have been blocked off by a solid wall of earth. Around the area were makeshift beds, most probably the living quarters of the "worker's" that were let go earlier. The place wasn't impoverished by any means, but the subtle dirtiness was a certain indicator of its tenants.

At the end of the room, were cowering men and women, in a sorry state and hiding behind a makeshift barrier from the beds. The people in the slums were already miserable enough, but Cleo could see through their famished bodies and weak eyes that they have been abused to work. Minor injuries could be visible from their bodies, and the more perceptive people of the group could see it looking like marks received from whips. As for their numbers, there weren't that many, amounting to at most 20 people. Cleo had no idea of the concrete number of people that there were supposed to be, so he couldn't initially guess if it was all of them or just mere survivors.

"W-who are you?" One of them asked, trembling as he tried to cover his fellows in the front.

Cleo, finally at the end of the road, smiled gently as he answered. "Rest assured. You are now free."

The priest followed and nodded at Cleos short statement and it felt the same, all was so, all did a fine job and all did contribute in equal terms and that was matter. But best of all, they are all alive that is what truly matters. Hearing soon brave Shea speak, how it was itchy, The priest slightly smiled as yes...It is rather annoying. She has been on the receiving end and the itch could be something that could bother for maybe half a hour or more. Wounds closing slowly on there own instead of magic was something that would cause such a itch.

The priest shook her head with a small chuckle as she smiled towards shea "Its is alright Shea, i understand, a small annoyance that could bother. And after all we been through, do not worry. It should fade away in time, Once wounds are closed...should stop there or when the spell ends" Refusing to mention that the spell last for a whole hour, She herself is not sure if the itch would stop once she is fully healed...But her gaze shifted towards Cleo and did a small bow as they walked, acknowledging respectfully his statement. "It would be of dear heart if you would, i hope to see you one day there. I will admit Cleo, You surprise me much"she stated as...for a merchant, he was one interesting fellow. Soon there adventure would come to soon a rather grim sight. Once she step towards the small doorway and her eyes adjusted towards the injured and rather, inhumane kept people. It was a rather painful sight. "By gods above..." The priest silently said as she passed by Cleo approaching the group. "We are here to help, please do no feel anxious" Looking at the state they are in and the bodies, they should rest for a day or two and be brought back to speed Looking towards at cleo as she held the hand of one said people, inspecting injuries and there unacceptable conditions, Eleca spoke "Sir, Maybe it's best they stay at the Chapel grounds for a short days of rest, Mend their wounds and rest there bodies and food. They are in no condition to travel or do much. They would be safe there unless you already have a place in mind." She knew that They would be offered a better life in the hands of Cleo unlike this, but at this time, proper care before then would be best option. Anything other than this....Devilish hole and slums would be better. Even as a priest she agrees that anything is better than this. Eleca was just worried.

Shea bowed her head to Elecal in gratitude as she continued to scratch her body. Cleo nodded to Elecal's words, thinking the same. The decision of finding a living needs to be set aside, and their recovery must come first. "As she said, you will all be given reprieve and shelter for the time being." He began. "Worry not, it's a church that will take you all in. You are all in good hands."

"A-ah, thank you!" The famished leader finally relaxed as he clasped his hands in gratitude. The rest of the workers followed suit, vocalizing their gratitude to the group. This fervent appreciation caused a slight discomfort inside Cleo but shook it off as commanded his escorts. "Safely deliver them to the topmost floor." The escorts nodded as the workers limped and paced towards the exit. Cleo's eyes followed them but paused to look at the entrances blocked by earth. "Excuse me." He stopped the workers, to which they complied. "Were there any others?" The leader of the group shifted his gaze as he answered. "There were. I don't think you'll be able to get them now though." His eyes drifted unto the blocked entrances, and Cleo did not miss that gesture. "Alright. I'll be sure to inform the City Guard of this." ...not really. The leader nodded his head as they once again began to move.

As Cleo stared at the earthen blockage, he shook his head and faced the others. "This is already more than your pay, and what I can handle. Let us return. We've already put too much time in this endeavor." He beckoned, finally walking out of the room and moving out of the place.

"Ah, a good day's work finished once again." Shea commented. "I'm famished! Boss, you don't mind treating us some food, yeah?" Cleo chuckled. "Unfortunately, I'll be too busy to accompany you after this. However, you may use my name for your tabs." Shea was almost beaming when Cleo continued. "I'll deduct it to your payment afterwards." Shea grunted as she was slapped on the shoulder by Zin. "Ms. Shea and Elecal, as well as Mr. Zin and Ambrose, I humbly thank you all for your cooperation. You may all return to the Adventurer's Guild to receive your payment." He then handed to them silvery tickets, which had the Blue Quill's logos on them. "And as your bonuses, an exclusive voucher for each of you. You are welcome to drop by at Blue Quill any time to turn them in for some equipment and more rykes." As he finished, he then looked at Elecal. "Well then, now that's sorted with, please lead the way." He requested. "I am not familiar with your church, so I do not know here to go."

Eleca stood silent at the fact yes, once there was more people but, not anymore. Looking over at Cleo as he had a few words, thanking them for actions done today and speaking of there Payment. Eleca was not to inclined in the matter of payment but, this was a job After All, she could not simply decline, especially with all she must do. But she seem surprised at the small ticket given to her, silver in color, could be turned in to equipment and rykes. Now this was something she was more inclined to. Today was a day that showed Eleca how rather mundane she was at the scenario of combat. She has a idea later on "Thank you very much Cleo, it was a honor, trully, and especially with Zin,Shea and Ambrose. If it was not for your guards as well, i feel this would have been a different outcome" Pocketing the Ticket and keeping in mind where she can redeem it, with a nod, it was time to lead the way.

"Certently Cleo, please follow, I know a church not far from the slums who will bring aid. They are of no specific faith, more of a place of religious congregation to lend hands to those in need. As to help others, one not always need a god to aid, but a heart and the will to help" As she was done, she slowly gesture to follow as the path of mud and dirt was as expected from the slums. An ordeal done, and one she was glad was over. Now to lead these people to a calmer and so much needed assistance, away from what they were in. The path followed was not of much length, maybe around 5 minute walk from the slums to a different corner of the same. soon a well built sloped buildings came in to view, made of what seemed cared granite. Equally as small like most of the buildings near it but rather well maintained, its cleanliness could be better but the slums were slums afterall. On its front, a small line made of people could stretch down left and through the corner. As they slowly poured in, so did some come out, with a rather well filled wooden plate with food of similar variety. Many sat at the stairs edge eating their meals while others walked a good times away seeming to enter there slump homes. At the front, a cleric seeming to wear a rather different garments than Eleca: a dull brown and greyish robe and what seems to be some white ribbon tied around his waist, holding his robe, he seemed to be the one telling the poor populus when they could enter for there turn.

Eleca slowly approached the man and gave a slight bow, the man notice and gave a bow as well seeming rather impressed "Blessed be sister, I am rather surprised to see some of the city chapel come here, do you come here to preach? lay aid perhaps to the people?" he asked, slowly helping a man of age pass through the open doors in to the building. Eleca noded "Yes, more or less. We bring people who seek shelter, they have been through a rather....serious ordeal, there so much we can do. They require refuge and more modest aid" Stepping to the side, the priest made sure the rather malnourished and weak people are visible, if the guards already did not get there attention from the start.

The man seemed worried and shocked at the aspect and condition these people were in. "I see, gods be, how did this happen?" he asked seemed confused, waving his hand as two chaplins wearing similar apparel like the man, came towards the entrance to help. Eleca looked over Cleo wondering if he should know or should be kept vague, news of what happen spreading like this could cause some issues and Eleca was not sure if it was a good idea.

Cleo and the rest of the group followed Elecal as she lead them. Along the way, the workers murmured to themselves, relief apparent from their faces. A faint smile appeared on his lips as he the group continued. They finally arrived at a nearby church. A quaint place for the people, understandably so since such places were meant for the humble. Cleo's expression softened as he saw the clergy tending to the people, poor or not, and offering help whenever they can. As a merchant, charity was unprofitable and a waste of time, but his heart had not frozen over enough yet to ignore his own humanity. In fact, his heart lightened seeing the people come and go to live another day.

After Elecal talked to the priest, Cleo introduced himself and informed the priest of the entire situation, save for some of the more sensitive parts. The priest nodded in understanding and let the people in to recuperate for a couple of days. However, the priest was concerned with financial matters since although there were only twenty people, it was still a lot of people to shelter for a couple of days when the church is but a humble charity without significant backing. Cleo then gave a generous amount of donation to the church, with the intent of letting them spend most of it on the recovery of the workers. The priest accepted the donation with much gratitude, proclaiming that many more people will be helped because of it.

Knowing full well that the workers have basically nowhere to work anymore, Cleo offered them a place in his company, Blue Quill. The workers were understandably hesitant, but many considered his offer and would let him know later if they would accept. Cleo told them that they were welcome to apply for a job anytime, and left them to finally rest. He bade the group farewell, before moving on with his escorts. He has certain things left to do.

***

Beyond space and time, at a place where no mortal eye could hope to witness, in a world where nothing holds meaning, a single presence pulsed with malicious, sickening exaltation. Elecal would feel a passing feeling, too faint to even be of notice. Unbeknownst to her, a twisted chuckle resonated within the void, unheard.

Aftermath

They say the slums are always a bad place to be a bad place. The fighting in the slums has caught the attention of the local guards and the adventurer's guild is more focused on the area. Cleo's name has been mentioned in the streets a few times as he is seen as a savior of some kind. With this, the guards have increased their patrols in the area. However, corruption of the local area is much harder to remove and takes a lot more time. With the people, Cleo freed from their oppressive bosses and taskmasters a few of them took him up on the offer. Though there was only a hand full of them. The others after their experience have decided they would put the city behind them and move elsewhere to look for work or other lines of work.
