The capital city of Ryken was beautiful. It simply rivaled anything Rosanna had ever seen on Earth. Not even the most magnificent structures like the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris could compare to the towering beauty of the royal palace that overviewed the city. The idyllic Kabnak river which was the countries largest river only further served to add more charm to the capital. It was a city ripped out of a fantasy novel. But then again this whole world was its own fantasy novel. She a country-bumpkin was absolutely amazed by everything taking in the sights with burning curiosity. Yet she did not forget her purpose for coming here in the first place. The Imperial Logia Academy of Ryken. This school produced some of the best intellects and mages of the century. But if you weren't born with a talent of magic or held the sharpest mind that didn't mean it was the end of the world for you. Many regular graduates went on to secure a trade that suited them and practically guaranteed a secured future. Right now it should be a little over three months into the school year so joining the academy now wouldn't be too awkward.

That's right, she endured the painfulness of traveling in a ratty old wagon to the capital to gain admission to one of the most elite schools in the country. Commoners were allowed to attend but according to some of the whispers, she's heard whilst traveling it was apparent most of the aristocratic side of Logia didn't take too well to them. Though that was a worry for the future Rosanna to deal with, the current Rosanna was only worried about gaining admission to the academy. She had only come to the capital with the clothes on her back. Literally. The only item she had in her possessions currently was a single patched wool dress and worn leather boots given to her by her mother. It was of slightly better quality than the old dress she usually wore back at home. The Payne family didn't have much a lot of things especially money so she instantly threw away the idea of borrowing money from her parents for expenses while in the capital. She could make do no matter how small. With Chinatsu's experience as an actress in the entertainment industry, it wouldn't be impossible to earn some sliver.

Had she never awakened the buried memories of her past life she most likely would have lived her whole life unaware in her home village. So she was immensely grateful for these memories, she swore she'd put them to good use. At last, she had finally arrived at the festival hosted by the academy located in an accessory courtyard out front between the main campus and the rest of the city. Though she didn't know why it was being held it was a god-sent opportunity for her. It was a great chance for people who wanted to enter the school themselves or whose relatives were interested in the school to come but they had to be checked by academy guards first for safety reasons. After going through it all the guards permitted her to pass through. Almost immediately her eyes widened at the impressive scenes before her. A young mage who appeared to be a student juggled balls of fire and water in their hands while entertaining a crowd, another mage threw a bunch of flowers into the air and then made them all fully bloom, the magical flowers descending into open palms of those below. Stalls were also set up each containing its own special thing. While she did come here with a very important mission it'd be okay to enjoy herself for a bit right..?

With that in mind, she set off into the joyous festival. Honestly, this was all kind of nostalgic. It reminded her of Chinatsu's cultural school festivals without the fantasy elements of course. Rosanna made sure to pay attention to her surroundings lest she bump into somebody. If she accidentally bumped into an aristocrat and incurred their wrath it'd be over for her. A commoner from a small farming village like her would be easy to get rid of. Just thinking of such a situation rattled her bones. Unfortunately, it seemed like she jinked it for she collided with someone after letting her guard down for just a second.
"Ah! I'm terribly sorry! I-"
Rosanna turned around to apologize to the person but her words stopped midway through her sentence as her gaze landed upon his face. Why did this man seem so familiar? It wasn't his presence that seem familiar in the sense but his features. Wait.. weren't those eurocentric features?! Her suspicions were quickly rising.

Was it possible for other people from Earth to be here? Rosanna couldn't immediately label it out to be impossible. After all, she herself had reincarnated into this world and that in itself was shocking. In Chinatsu's memories, she vaguely remembered meeting [god] upon her death and they told her many things but had never once mentioned anything about other people from Earth coming here like she was. Then again why would they tell her something like that? So many mysteries in such a short time. In this place, the man could be said to be unique with the plain colors of his eyes and hair. Most people had eye-catching colors that were bright or dark. Rosanna carried the traits of unnameable pink hair and jeweled red eyes.
"Are you a foreigner? I've never seen someone that looks like you before. You must come from a very distant country right?"
She gave a closed-eye smile and put heavy emphasis on the 'very' part of her words. Maybe what she said seemed threatening but she was just in the mood for some teasing at the moment. Plus she was also very curious as well!

Dan, the Plain-Clothed Traveler

It was a long ride over from the periphery villages. Much like the other passengers of the caravan, the human in the plain brown cloak was exhausted. Bumping around on a cart with un-sprung spokes of wood along an unpaved and often cobbled path was only barely more comfortable than walking. At least his muscles weren’t sore.

As he looked around, he soaked in the view. The capital city of Ryken. A truly remarkable place. The plain-clothed traveler had heard of the place before. It was always described as a ‘melting pot’ where people from the surrounding empires go to sightsee and do business. Being a capital city, it also bore the prestige of housing some rather important people. Those important people happened to really value money. And money arises from innovation. And that is where the mind of the plain-clothed traveler was focused.

Ever since he started his life here in this new world, he had been intrigued by the various oddities that he had seen around himself. People with various different ear-shapes, glowing ephemeral jewelry, and seemingly anachronistic historical weaponry casually strolled around like they were in the middle of some sort of cosplay convention. It was more than a little off-putting for a modern man like him, but he was steadily getting used to it. He learned the basics of how everything worked in the world through his time traveling between here and the village he found upon his 'arrival'. Now it was time to put those basics to use.

As everyone from the caravan gradually dispersed into the rest of the crowd around the gates in to the city, the plain-clothed traveler grasped his money pouch. He looked around with a discerning gaze, watching the people near the gate. As he watched, several people got their belongings searched by armored men, then they had their possessions returned, and they pulled out a single metallic coin, handing it to other armored men as they headed in through the gate. The plain-clothed traveler looked into his own money pouch, but grimaced. He let the pouch hang by his side once more, then thought for a few moments.

He looked around at the various people by the gate. Among them, he saw a long line of people waiting for their turn. Some of them were talking with one another, but plenty of them were just kicking sod around, bored. Then a thought occurred to him. He cleared his throat, stood out near the line, and raised his voice. ”Hello all! Today is a most wonderful day!” A few gazes turned his way as he began speaking. He grinned. ”Upon this day, we have been granted the opportunity to see a most wonderful sight! The bountiful Capital of Ryken! Whether it be the towering spires of the palace or the rolling streams of the waterways, your eyes will surely receive a treat behind these walls. But alas, a lengthy obstacle has stalled your thrill! A dreary lull has fallen upon this crowd, and has left y’all sullen, I fear! ”

A few others looked his way as he spoke. Whether it was the energy with which he was speaking, or the unusualness of his presentation and accent, it seemed to be getting him some attention. There were some glares, but certainly, plenty of folk were listening. The plain-clothed traveler raised his arms, and began gesturing in a practiced, if still amateurish manner. ”Tis a tragedy to leave such as thee, weary travelers and worthy men, in such a sad and sorry state! So lend me your ear, let me weave you a story to pass the time. I’ll entice your minds, your imaginations and…perhaps…” He tapped his money pouch, and winked.

There were a few chuckles, a few crossed arms, and a bunch of skepticism. But he carried on. He spoke a tale he had heard along his travels. A story of a young boy and a troll becoming friends, and parting in tragedy. He wasn’t particularly skilled at storytelling, so his delivery and wording were quite awkward at times, but the details were interesting enough to keep some gazes. A dozen minutes later, he finished the story with a bow, and several people applauded half-heartedly. As he went around for tips, several people gave him some tiny metal coins, primarily out of obligation. One person gave him a slightly bigger coin, complimenting his 'imagination'. The plain-clothed traveler thanked them sincerely, then counted his earnings. He grinned after finishing the tally, then got in line with a smirk.

Two tiny coins jingled together in his coin purse as he walked along the cobbled streets of Ryken. The capital city was large, certainly. The plain-clothed traveler had wandered around for well over an hour and still had to keep asking directions to his destination. Horses raced by, excited mumbling buzzed around, and the occasional shout of “Stop” or “Thief” rang out before getting drowned by clatter and chatter. The flapping of flying people darting overhead, the flash of magic, and the twinkling of ephemeral magics spinning through the air gave the place a special feeling, to the plain-clothed traveler at least. It was an afternoon in a busy city, and the place was definitely alive.

However, the plain-clothed traveler was not interested in mere street chatter. He did not let himself get distracted by the various oddities around him - or, at least, not for very long. He had his eyes set on a different goal entirely. At long last, he managed to turn a corner and spot the remarkable spires of the facility he was looking for – the Imperial Logia Academy of Ryken. Banners of Ryke and of the academy’s own emblem fluttered vigorously in the wind over each of the spires of the elegant building. The campus was mostly hidden behind some tall and rather elegantly designed marble walls, but the sheer scale of the campus was breathtaking nonetheless. No matter the angle, the artistry in the design and position of the buildings behind the walls was evident, demanding from all who looked upon it awe and respect toward the architects who designed it.

The plain-clothed traveler walked around the walls of the campus, observing it and granting it the awe that it rightfully seemed to deserve. He asked the guards at various gates if he could be granted access, but they denied him. As he inquired further, they told him that they denied all non-students, and told him to go to the accessory courtyard at the front of the campus. They said that there was a festival ongoing, and that he would be able to see the students 'bring honor to the academy' by using their talents to bring the city of Ryken merriment and joy. All while hopefully earning money to fund their scholarly ventures. The plain-clothed traveler was excited to hear the premise of the festivities, so he hastened his venture.

...

Soon, he found his way to the accessory courtyard. It was a remarkably busy place, with people streaming in and out through the gates in massive crowds. The festival grounds were even more crowded than the front gate of the capital. The plain-clothed traveler had to stop a moment to take in the view. The crowds weren't large enough that individuals became completely indistinguishable, but bumping into something would clearly be inevitable. He gathered his nerves and approached.

There was a small clearing before the front gates of the academy, where numerous groups of people stood and looked around, seemingly waiting for others. He decided to approach that area, as it seemed slightly more accessible at the moment. He occasionally glanced back over at the gates as he walked over, attempting to catch a glance inside. But as he did, he incidentally bumped into someone. He quickly backed up a step to make some space, and held out his hands worriedly. "Ah..." he mumbled, his words overlapping the missie's hasty apology. He smiled at her warmly as she paused, but shook his head. "You can't take all the fault missie, I wasn't lookin' either."

There was an awkward pause after his comment. Evidently, she was staring at him. He raised an eyebrow, but remained silent. After her comment, he chuckled and shook his head, retorting, "All kinds in these parts, dearie. Welcome to Ryken." He glanced at her clothes, then grinned, and commented, "Looks like yer not here for spendin', aye? People come from all o'er to take a gander at this 'ere place. Some from very far away." He winks after that comment, then extends his hand in greeting, grinning even wider. "If ye care fer names, mine is Dan. I'm not just here fer a gander. I'm a bit more ambitious than that. How about yerself?"

After they exchanged their greetings, he gestured to the entryway. "Well then, no time like the present. If you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours." With that, he began walking over to the gates. It didn't take long to get through, since the guards were evidently pretty quick at their job. Once Dan was in the courtyard, he looked around in awe. There were at least a hundred individual stalls, and people were doing performances all over the place. There even seemed to be a small elevated arena set up for duels. Dan continued taking in the view for a bit, looking quite impressed.

Part of her suspicions were confirmed upon hearing the man speak. Though she didn't know what natives from other countries besides the protectorate of Ryke sounded like that accent definitely wasn't from around here. Not from this world at least. It sounded familiar perhaps Chinatsu heard it somewhere in the past? Like on a radio show or popular series? Rosanna looked at the outstretched hand in front of her, blinked for a moment before taking it. The man's hand wasn't rough as a laborers hand would likely be suggesting a good upbringing or a lack of hard physical activities. But then again she also didn't have any calluses on her hands despite being a farmer's daughter. While she did help out in the field she wasn't doing back-breaking labor as her older brother was. Silently she wondered if her brother held grievances over that.
"Wonderful to meet you, Dan. I'm Rosanna."
She briefly considered the fact of Dan not having a surname since one was not given but quickly pushed that down. It was more like he wasn't giving one than not having one. It didn't bother her really but she didn't give her last name either.

No matter how small of the card it may be it was always good to keep it close to your chest. Even the smallest of things could make a major difference.
"I'm not here for a gander either. It would seem we are two ambitious peas in a pod perhaps we're here for the same reasons or maybe not?"
Scratching each other's back huh? That was something that could be done. It was always good to have people you could receive help from no matter how long you've known them. To Dan's words, she nodded and followed in closely after him. Rosanna had already been checked before so she passed through without any complications. As she walked by her new acquaintance's side she took in the sights, more notable, the stalls. The things on display caught her eye. Unfortunately, no matter how much she'd like to have bought a few she was literally penniless.

With a regretful sigh, she promised herself that there'd come a day where she'd have enough money to buy out an entire market.
"There are so many stalls! So many amazing options that are making my head spin. Oh but besides the stalls didn't you mean you weren't here just to take in the sights?"
Apparently ignoring the fact she had only just met Dan a few minutes ago she started chatting with him like a close friend. She'd never say this out loud she was extremely lonely. Whether it was the fact everything in this world was almost completely alien to her or that she had zero friends even back in the village. So it was a tremendous relief to have found somebody that could possibly be from the same world as she was. Rosanna wasn't alone anymore. Even if this temporary companionship lasted for an hour or day she was happy to not be experiencing this festival alone.

As the pair of two walked Rosanna continued on with the conversation.
"This is a complete guess but are you perhaps trying to get into the academy? If so I am too."
It would make sense right? If Dan did come from Earth and wasn't reincarnated as she was, suddenly transported to this world then he would try to gain all the knowledge he could right? The fastest way to gain that wanted knowledge was to gain admission to The Imperial Logia Academy of Ryken. At this moment she felt like a genius for deducing such a thing. If he answered yes then she would happily jump on ship with him. Two peas in a pod were significantly better than one pea.

Dan, the Plain-Clothed Traveler

Evidently, Rosanna took far less time getting through the gates than Dan had originally expected. Upon hearing the lady sigh next to him, he looked over, somewhat startled. He regained his composure after hearing her comments, nodding a bit in agreement. After her question, he chuckled and shook his head, looking back over to the scene before them with a slight, distant grin. "Ahh, indeed, I did. However, I did not come here to blindly rush around either. The first step of any successful venture is research." He quickly pointed over to one of the stalls, which had relatively few people walking over to it, in spite of the stall-runner's insistent urgings and offers. "For me to achieve my goal, I need money. A good way to earn money is to solve a person's problems." He winked to the lady next to him, then calmly started heading over to the stalls.

On the way over, he continued looking around, but still listened and carefully considered her question. He looked over to her now and then as he responded, bearing a cautious expression. "That would be one way to achieve my goals. Seeing as you're looking for a spot here, I'll see what I can do to get you one." Despite how crowded it was, and despite how relaxed their pace was, they managed to get their way over to the stall pretty quickly. The stall was positioned at the edge of a row, and was set up as a food-production stand. There was a small grill on one side, and a display case on the other side. Behind the stall were two tables, evidently set up with ingredients positioned for ready use. The product that was being sold was a spiced stick of skewered meat. However, there was a odd smell to the meat.

Once they got there, the orc behind the stall called out to them, saying, "Ahh! Good man and lady, please buy my meat sticks! They are very good! You'll enjoy them!"

The fellow smirked at the orc's invitation, and walked up to the stall. There was plenty of space there, especially since the other fair-goers seemed to be avoiding the place. Dan inspected a few parts of the stall, then looked over to the orc and asked, "Hrm. Then please tell me about what you're selling and what its price is."

The orc excitedly nodded, and gestured to the display case. Several skewers were positioned within it, with bugs flying around. The orc excitedly pulled one out, waving the flies away, and commented, "Yes! I'm Bugg, and this is what I call 'Bugg Meat'. It is giant boar meat cooked to medium rarity, and is seasoned with dried aggaba grass and salt. Each skewer costs 25 Rykes!"

The plain-clothed traveler nodded after hearing Bugg's explanation, then reached into his money pouch. "Alright then, Bugg. I'll try one. But first, tell me about how business has been going for you today?"

Bugg winced a little as he heard the suggestion. He looked around for a bit, then leaned in and whispered, "I don't know why, but...not a lot of people come to my stall. I haven't been able to sell anything today."

Dan nodded, smiling thoughtfully, then pulled out three coins from his money pouch, completely emptying it. He placed the coins on the counter and held out his hand. "I see! Then I'll be your first, won't I? Give me your best, Bugg!"

The orc happily accepted the money, then quickly went to work preparing some meat. He took one of the skewers from the display, waved a bunch of the bugs off, and placed it on the grill. As he turned it around, smoke rose and a sizzling sound could be heard from behind the counter. He rushed back to a table in the back, grabbed a small bowl of some powder or other, and rushed back over, sprinkling it over the meat as he turned it on the grill. After a bit more hurrying around, he finished the procedure and proudly presented it to Dan.

Dan accepted the skewer while communicating his thanks, and inspected it for a few seconds. He smiled over to Rosanna and plucked one of the steaming-hot pieces of meat off of the skewer, then held the rest of the skewer out to her. He bounced the meat around in his hand for a bit as it cooled off, then cautiously took a bite. All the while, Bugg watched in eager anticipation.

It was horrible. Somehow, the seasonings had all burned along with the exterior surface of the meat. The inside was chewy near the surface, and although the inside was cooked to 'medium rarity' like Bugg said, it felt gamy. But at the same time, there was a tanginess to the seasoning that went fairly well with it. Once Dan took a few bites and thoroughly pieced his thoughts together, he looked over to Rosanna, and asked, "Well? Any thoughts?" Bugg looked between the two of them with great anticipation as he awaited their review.

There was something about a big city that just filled one with awe. From the towering stone walls to the grand gates, just the sheer size of the place was mind boggling, and Naya couldn't help gasping as she passed underneath the stone arch leading into the city. How the heck could someone build something that big? How did it stay standing? All these questions and more raced through the cat girl's head as the horse drawn cart rolled along. She bugged the driver over every little thing that came to mind and the dark haired woman calmly explained everything to her. Honestly most of what she said went over Naya's head, but there was one thing she was certain of. Her mom was smart.

It didn't take long for them to reach the market square. Her mom got off and moved to start unloading boxes when a man from a neighboring stall noticed them. Well, one of them. "Good morning, Maya!" He called out, walking over to help her. "Got a lot to sell today?"

"Good morning, Marcus." She replied with a smile, happily letting him take the load from her arms. "Just the usual amount. And you?"

"I've got decent amount." Marcus bragged as he set the box down and moved to grab another one. "Business has been pretty good for me the last few weeks. I've made enough coin to buy a fancy dinner. Maybe you'd be interested in... huh?" He paused as he noticed a pair of large cat ears poking up over the crates, ones that were soon followed by a set of glaring eyes.

"Mom? Who is this?" Naya asked, scrutinizing the man as she picked up a box of her own and hopped down off the cart.

The man looked at her shocked, then back to Maya. "Mom?" He questioned. "You have a kid?"

"Four of them." The dark haired woman answered much to the man's horror as she began setting up her stall. "Nayacel here is the oldest. Naya, this is Marcus. He's the smith we get most of our tools from." Oh, so this was the guy that kept giving them discounts. Clearly he had ulterior motives. Ones that her mom didn't seem to notice.

"You're married?" Marcus exclaimed, not believing what he was hearing.

"No no, not married." Maya answered to the man's relief.

Marcus shot Naya a quick glare for what he viewed as an attempt to mislead him, one the neko returned because she had been, before he produced a small coin purse. "Say, It's the girl's first time in the city, right? Well the academy is hosting a festival right now. Why not let her go enjoy it?"

Maya had to consider the offer. She had brought Naya along to help with work, but there wasn't so much that Maya couldn't do it on her own. I the end she decide to leave it up the girl in question. "What do you think, sweetie?"

What did Naya think? She thought this was an obvious ploy to get her to leave the two of them alone. But if she to choose between being bored selling vegetables all day and going off to party? The answer was pretty obvious. "The festival sounds fun!" She chirped, hopping up and snatching the bag of money that was being dangled over her head. She turned to dash off before a thought came to mind. "Oh Mom, don't forget that Mum wanted a new pair of shears." Then she zipped away, but not before hearing Marcus question the statement.

"Oh that's what the kids call my girlfriend."

"Girlfriend!?"

....

It didn't take Naya long to find the academy. She just had to follow the stream of people heading the same direction and soon enough she found herself at the crowded gate of a large building. Inside she could see stalls and people preforming. She patiently waited in line for her turn. Well... Not that patiently. She was bouncing on her toes the entire time. But eventually she made it through the crowd and into the auxiliary courtyard. She stared in awe at all the various things around her, the jugglers, the food stalls, and especially the raised platform. This was going to be so much fun!

Arthur Verg
20211114_093548.png

Step by step, Arthur made his way to the city gates, wagons passed by him as he treaded his way there, one arm swinging to help him move faster. Being handicapped with only one arm was a rough start, considering he had a ghostly arm back at the forest where he ate that fairy to survive... The thought of it made his spine shiver, Arthur remembered what it sounded like when he chomped down at that fairy, the cries it let out, pleading for him to stop. CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH. Another death on his hands, not like he wasn't used to it, he had done much worst in his time before he was executed and woke up in this new world.

Before God. Arthur's hand moved up to his shoulder, where his arm would have been, where it was blown off. The memories made it ache slightly. He had the sleeve wrapped in a knot, having to use his one hand and teeth to do so. Luckily he discarded the rags he did wake up in and found black leather clothes on a dead corpse along the way so he'd at least look somewhat proper, long sleeved with a stripe of dark orange on the seams of his clothing. His amber eyes looked up to the city before him, he could hear talk of the city as wagons drove pass him. " Ryken. " Arthur spoke under his breath. " What a interesting looking city. " Arthur told himself as he was able to pass through the gates, he could hear the whispers. The whispers of the dead around him, barely audible but they were there, he couldn't see them, not since he left that forest nor could his arm be conjured.

Luckily before he left and lost control of these powers that are suppressed now, the spirit that did help him guided him here to Ryker, saying he could learn more at the academy to control and improve his powers. Arthur noticed the looks he was given from passerbys, was it because of his arm? Or his title? This was all new to the former hitman. He didn't know how this world worked but that wouldn't discourage him, Arthur wanted to learn more about this vast world.

~~~
After a lot of walking around and asking for directions, Arthur would find the academy, so many people crowding to get in it was pretty noticeable. Or should have been. The one armed man got into line while he still could before it got too crowded. Arthur could feel people bump and shove into him, into his arm that no longer existed, he hissed with pain as it was still sensitive and probably would still be for the rest of his days.
Eventually after the pushing and shoving died down, Arthur took a deep breath, he wasn't who he used to be, he would have to get used to being a regular person again. Not someone who demanded respect or who was feared by his actions. As Arthur stood in line, next to him he noticed a very hyperactive... Cat girl? He wasn't exactly sure, this was all new to him. His amber eyes looked on over to her. " Uh. Excuse me. Are you okay? Is this event really that exciting? " he asked, pretty genuine with his question, he wasn't very knowledgeable of this world or city, but his voice sounded dead.
Rosanna listened silently as the man talked, preferring to gather her thoughts first before commenting on anything he said. So he needed money to achieve his goal. That was completely understandable but the latter part of his sentence confused her. While it was true that one could earn money by resolving another's problems but at the festival? There didn't seem to be anyone visibly in distress so had Dan noticed something she hadn't? Like a curious duckling with its mother, she once again followed behind closely as they neared the stalls. Huh.. ? Her movement almost ceased to stop working the moment she heard what the man beside her said. It wasn't anything overly shocking but for her it definitely was. He'd actually try and help her with gaining admission to the academy? Despite herself, a smile full of joy appeared on her face. How kind of him, truly. From what she's seen so far, Dan had a good heart and head on his shoulders. Instantly she affirmed her decision to keep good relations with him. The future was endless so many things could happen, it wouldn't do her any harm to become friendly with someone who could have her back.
As the party reached a food-selling stall that sold skewered meather with spice her eyes started to dart around. This was food from another world! But her interest quickly turned to ashes once an odd smell reached her nose. Hm.. was that coming from the meat? She tried her best to distract herself from that when the owner of the stall started talking to them. He was an orc. To be honest, orcs weren't that fascinating. Who in their right mind would be excited to see an orc of all things? Though she was careful not to let her prejudice show. The spacious area around this stall caught her attention. Why did it seem like this one specific stall was being avoided even though the festival was crowded? Those attentive eyes of hers fluttered back towards the meat. She was almost ninety percent sure that the meat had a role to play in this situation.
At this point, she just let Dan do all the talking he was- Oh what in the seven hells.. were those bugs?!? The orc who had presented himself as Bugg's gestured to a display case with skewers in it. The thing is that bugs were flying around the meat. Even if this world's technology level was that of medieval Europe the people here wouldn't be dumb enough to eat something that quite literally had bugs on it. Right? Dan had asked the right question and Bugg gave an answer which should have been glaringly obvious to him. But what surprised Rosanna the most was the price. At present, she didn't understand much about this world like currency but 25 Rykes seriously sounded overpriced for something that was practically on par with filth!
Her expression twisted for a second when Dan gave her the rest of the disgusting skewer. Rosanna hadn't even tasted it yet but knew it would cause her to die for a second time. Would [god] be ashamed at the sheer stupidity of it? Still, since it was given to her by the man who would help her she braced herself and dove in for a bite. A revolting taste exploded in her mouth almost ending her prematurely. Words simply couldn't describe how she was feeling at that moment. She was somewhere between heaven and earth expect it was not a blissful experience. Once swallowed and done away it, she turned to look at Dan around the same time he did. Her eyes told him all he needed to know. Kill me. When Bugg asked for their thoughts upon 'Bugg Meat' she spoke up for the first time since coming to the stall.
"It's good and bad. Would you mind if I gave a few suggestions? I'm not telling you how to make your product but these are things I think would just increase the quality of Bugg Meat overall. First, let's start with the issue of the bugs. It's great that you have a theme with your name but having real bugs in your food drives away potential customers and I'm sure you know what no customers mean right? Try putting your skewers in an enclosed space or just really anything where bugs cant get onto the food. Secondly, you see how the seasoning is just burnt along the side like this? That isn't giving a very appealing image. Your food doesn't have to look beautiful but it having such a look could really dismay customers from trying your food. Perhaps try cooking at a moderate temperature. One where it's hot enough to actually cook your food but not hot enough to burn it black. Besides all the critic I have, I do also have to say you compliments. Despite it being burnt along the sides the seasoning was especially good. If you're bold enough to play around with new spices I'm pretty they'd taste great in your hands!"
As she spoke it was like something had activated. Like the flip of a switch, she transformed from a village girl into an experienced food critic. Her tone was of someone who knew what they were doing and gently passing on their knowledge to others. Yet it's funny because she knew close to nothing about cooking! All that she said was basic common knowledge from Earth so why did she sound like she knew what she was doing? There were definitely holes within her words that those who paid close attention and had high intelligence would notice but to those simple-minded with Chinatsu's experience as an actress and whatever the hell just happened, she seemed creditable.
Slowly she turned towards Dan hoping she hadn't made a complete fool out of herself in his eyes.
A man's voice started talking to Naya and her ears tilted his direction. Was she okay? What kind of a question was that? "Are you kidding? Why wouldn't it be exciting? It's a festival!" She bubbled. Living in a small town the parties were fairly small in scale, so something this size was exhilarating to her! But who was he, to be questioning the fun while standing in line to participate in said fun? Finally she looked towards him and examined him. He seemed pretty normal. Haggard, but normal... except for the fact that one of his arms was missing. Now that was weird. Surely there was a story behind it. But before she got to ask a window popped up in her view.
Now this window wasn't anything new to Naya. She'd seen it hundreds of times. For as long as she could remember whenever she focused on something or someone she'd see it. It was strange, and her mom had warned her not to let other people know about it, but it was just another part of her life. Plus it was actually kind of helpful. She got to learn things from it. Like that his name was Arthur Verg, and that he was a murderer.
Wait...
Murderer.
Naya's blood ran cold as she reread it. She had never seen anyone with that that title before but she knew full well what it meant. That he was dangerous. A killer. She took a step back from him. How had he even gotten in the city? "I-uh... I don't think I'm supposed to talk to you."
Dan, the Plain-Clothed Traveler
As Rosanna spoke, Dan gently reclaimed the skewer from her. After all, her expression said volumes about what she thought of the 'Bugg Meat'.
Bugg paid close attention to her response, and appeared rather thoughtful. He looked surprised and confused at her comments about the bugs, but looked intrigued after her comment about the burnt seasonings and the appearance of the food. Lastly, he looked rather proud after her comments about other spices.
By the time Rosanna was done with her comments, Dan was already looking back over at Bugg and the various items within his stall. He did not say anything initially - rather, he still seemed to be nibbling on the meat, trying out different parts of it.
When Rosanna finished her comments and looked over at Dan, Bugg nodded and replied, "That was rather thoughtful of you, missy! Thank you very much. Although, I guess I should tell you about the bugs." He gestured towards the little display case with the bugs flying around. "I'm an Entomancer. I create and manipulate bugs. For the festival, I wanted to take advantage of aggaba grass and aggabot flies in order to tenderize gamy giant boar meat. I hunted and gathered the ingredients myself, so I know that they're good enough for sale, but...you're right, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here. The meat and seasonings always end up burnt."
Dan grinned after Bugg's comments. He then asked, "Ah. Then how about your revenue? How much money have you made by selling your product so far?"
Bugg looked surprised after seeing Dan's grin all of a sudden, but he calmly replied, "Yesterday, I got a few people who were willing to try my food, so I've made 1050 Rykes so far."
Dan nodded, then pointed at the grill. "Then allow me to provide my assessment: The Bugg Meat is actually pretty tender, and the seasonings go well with it. But the smoke is ruining the flavor, and you're cooking the meat way too fast. Further, the dry seasonings burn far too easily, and that is ruining the flavor too. So, Rosanna is right - the flavor was ruined, and the appearance is horrible. The people who bought your food so far only did so out of pity."
Bugg nodded, looking a bit disheartened. He scratched his chin a little as he contemplated Dan's words, but nodded, and asked, "You're right...I hadn't considered that. I never really cooked anything on my own in the past." He paused, then looked more hesitant, and added, "But...I don't know how to change the cooking process."
Dan then raised his head proudly. It seems like this was the moment he was waiting for. "If you want, I could show you a better method to cook and season the meat, which will also make it more presentable. But I'm going to need you to pay me all your current revenue first."
Bugg squinted at the fellow, but nodded. He looked skeptical. "Sure. But what exactly are you going to do?" He reached under the counter of the stall, drew out a bunch of coins, and placed them on the counter.
Dan scooped the coins into his coin pouch, placed the skewer that he was holding down onto the counter, and then gestured back out towards the gate. "I'll need to go over to one of the shops I saw on the way over to get you a few things. It'll take a minute. Maybe tell my friend here about Entomancy while I'm gone."
Bugg agreed, then started enthusiastically talking about the details of entomancy with Rosanna as Dan started hurriedly walking away.
...
A minute or two later, Dan came rushing back over, holding a low-walled cast-iron pot with a container of oil in his arms. Bugg waved over to him enthusiastically as he returned. Dan then commented, "Alright Bugg, help me get this thing up onto the grill. And move the oil bottle over to the back table."
Bugg came out from behind the stall and helped Dan carry the stuff around back. Once the short pot was positioned on the grill and the oil was in the back, Dan started explaining the plan with Bugg. "Alright Bugg. Here's the plan: You're going to mix the seasonings with the oil and mix it around a bunch, until it's a sort of slurry. Then add a bit more oil so it flows well." He then pulled out a brush from his coin pouch and placed it on the table. He gestured to it. "Use this brush to apply the flavored slurry to the meat while it's still on the skewer." He then pointed over to the pot on the grill, and added, "Then place the meat chunks into the pot and stir them around until they're cooked properly."
Bugg looked impressed as he heard Dan's ideas. He nodded and added, "I think I understand what you're going for. I'll try it real quick. Head back over there for a bit, I'll let you try it."
Dan quickly headed back around to the front of the stall, back next to Rosanna. He then watched as Bugg started to cook, casually commenting to Rosanna, "Well? Learn anything cool?"
Bugg started by mixing up the oil and the seasoning that he had been using earlier. He made a sort of slurry out of it, mixing it with the end of a wooden spoon, then added a little bit more oil to thin the mixture down. He then took the small cup of the seasoning slurry and removed a skewer from the rack, painting the stuff on with the brush that Dan gave him. He then removed the meat from the skewer, plopping it down into the pot. He used the skewer to move the meat around in the pot as it sizzled away. While it was cooking, a mouth-watering aroma filled the air - a smell like bacon with citrusy maple syrup. After around a minute, he poked the meat back onto the skewer and offered it to Dan again. This time, rather than looking burned, the meat had a crispy texture to it, like it had been fried. It also smelled vaguely citrusy. "Tell me what you think!"
Dan smiled and accepted the skewer. Once again, he pulled off one of the meat chunks, then offered the rest of the skewer to Rosanna. He bounced the meat around in his hand for a bit to get it to cool off, then started nibbling on it. It was still a little bit overcooked, to be sure, but the seasoning carried through way better this time. Rather than tasting burnt, it tasted like a tangy, bitter, and salty chunk of fried pork. It was also much more tender this time, although the texture was still a bit gamy. Dan popped the rest of the meat chunk into his mouth and smiled over at Rosanna again while he chewed. Bugg looked over at her too, this time in great anticipation. "Well? Any better?" Dan mumbled, still chewing on his portion.
...
After saying their farewells to Bugg and sharing thanks with one another, Dan led Rosanna back over to the entrance of the festival grounds, and over to a grassy area that wasn't too crowded. Once they had some space to themselves again, he grinned over to her and reached into his money pouch. "Not bad, huh?" he commented, holding out the coins, "We made 800 Rykes back there." He then selected a bunch of the coins and held them out to her. "Here's 200 for you. Now we can enjoy the festival, right?"
Once she accepted the coins, he gestured back over to the stalls around the place. "How about you pick one this time?"
Arthur was taken aback by her happy and joyful attitude, over a festival of all things. Well people certainly had their own interests and he shouldn't judge. " Well, I suppose you're right. These events could be fun. " Arthur commented with a chuckle, a small smile grew on his face away from the serious disheveled look that was on it previously. Verg was more used to quiet parts and not full blown festivals like this one, especially in his previous life, it wasn't like he never came out to these places. Only for work he did.
Arthur noticed her eyes loom over to where his arm previous used to be, he remembered that night... The betrayal of his both his families. He could feel the pain in his arm again, it burned, his hand gently came up and gently pressed on it to try and stop the feeling, it was worst when he thought about it. He face twisted into slight pain and uncomfortability. Letting his stump go when it ended, his eyes moved back to the girl and he noticed her eying something, like she was reading something.
Then her face contorted into fear and uncomfortability. Arthur's head tilted slightly as she took a step away from him. Did she know what he was? Her voice hinted with fear and her eyes showed the same emotion. Arthur stood there unfazed by her words and demeanor, not like it was surprising. " What do you mean by that? " Arthur asked in the same disheveled voice he asked previously. He wanted confirmation of what made her act this way, he had a couple theories already but wanted to try and narrow them down.
This was bad! Thiswasbad!Thiswasbad!Thiswasbad! She had slipped up! She wasn't supposed to know anything about him! And now he was suspicious! She had no real way to talk her way out of this! (At least none that was coming to mind.) What should she do? What should she do?
As she was frozen in panic someone behind her gave her a nudge. "Come on kid. Keep the line moving." Oh right! The line! She was almost at the front! If she could just make it to the gate she could slip into the crowd!
"Well you see..." Naya said slowly as the line crept forwards. "...my mom told me..." Why was it moving so slow? "...not to talk to strangers..." Okay, almost there. "...and you seem like a really strange stranger..." The person in front of her moved and she could see her escape open up. "...soI'mgoingtogo!Bye!" And with that she was gone, dashing through the gate and out of sight. Or well she would have but she wasn't watching where she was going. She took a sharp left onto a grassy area and ran full speed into a boy who was offering a girl some money.
"OOF!"
Dan, the Plain-Clothed Traveler
Right as the plain-clothed fellow turned to gesture towards the rest of the festival grounds, he noticed a lady with bestial features rushing towards him. He barely had enough time to blink as she slammed into him, sending him toppling to the ground. Luckily, he had already handed off the coins and released his belt pouch to his waist, so at least nothing was sent flying. He toppled gracelessly to the ground, landing with a thump. He groaned a little from the impact, which was worsened by the weight of the relatively short humanoid that had forced him to the ground.
He was too surprised during the impact and fall to make any comment, and he lay on the ground for several seconds before finally regaining his composure. Once he did, he exclaimed his surprise. "Hey now! Watch where you're going, please!" He then cautiously tried to get the young lady disentangled from himself and went about trying to get back on his feet.
Once he was back upright, he brushed himself off a bit and looked over to her. "You in a rush? Or..." After looking at her a bit closer, he raised an eyebrow, somewhat skeptical, but also a little concerned. "...actually, you look a bit pale. Are you hurt?" He looked past the lady, off in the direction that she seemed to have come from. The grassy field wasn't too crowded, so he was able to see a few people off in that direction. The one that stood out the most was a disheveled, sleep-deprived looking fellow with a missing arm.
Dan stared at the fellow for several seconds, then narrowed his eyes and leaned towards the cat lady, whispering, "It's him, right? The guy in the black leather? Did he threaten you or something?"
The one armed man stared at this girl as she acted very strange, getting swept with the crowd as he took a step back to stay out of the crowd, explaining to him that he was a strange stranger and made her escape. Arthur stood there and watched her slowly leave. He sighed as he assumed this girl would get herself into trouble, she had the look on her. The naivety in her eyes, if only she knew.
Following after the crowd Arthur was able to make his way through looking to his left to see the girl had ran into someone. Arthur almost chuckled at the sight as he came walking up " Well, that's rather rude, running into folk like that, little girl. " Arthur commented with a soft chuckle, he wanted to know why this girl was acting the way she was with him. His tired eyes looked up at the scrawny man who stared at him with narrowed eyes. Arthur's eyes met his, showing he wasn't one to back down even with a major hanicap such as one arm. " You look like you want to say something. " Arthur commented, with a hint of venom in his voice.
His eyes moved to the pink haired woman that this man was talking to. " Hello, ma'am. " Arthur bowed a little, showing his politeness as his attention moved back to the girl. " Excuse me, uh, cat girl, why are you acting so strange and running from me? You may end up running into the wrong people, these folk look like decent folk. " Arthur explained.
The boy Naya ran into groaned. Naya groaned. They all groaned. It was a fun time. The boy untangled himself and Naya just sat on the ground dazed. She still wasn't quite sure what hit her, or rather what she hit. She was vaguely aware of someone talking to her. Asking her if she was hurt? She shook her head to clear her thoughts. "Hurt? No no! Well, maybe my pride..." she laughed nervously. Then the boy asked about the man from before, asking if he threatened her, and Naya shook her head again. "No. But he's a bad man! He's-"
She didn't get to finish her statement before Arthur found her again, questioning why she was running. She let out an eep and scrambled to her feet. He was dead set on following her so he must not have anything good planned for her. She looked at the boy and girl, windows popping up for both of them. Dan and Rossana. They weren't very strong. Weaker than this Arthur guy. They needed to run! Or...
Spinning around to face Arthur, Nayacel popped her claws out. "I...I don't know how you got in here but leave us alone!" She hissed, ears laid back and tail puffed up. If he was going to try anything it was better to have it happen somewhere public rather than secluded. Best case scenario he would be scared off.
Dan, the Thoughtful, Plain-Clothed Traveler
The man that Dan had referred to was already approaching by the time he leaned in and asked the cat girl about the source of her fears. Dan frowned as the fellow made a passive-aggressive comment toward him, and kept watching the fellow closely, but seemed to be focused on the cat girl's explanation.
Evidently, there is some sort of misunderstanding going on here. This cat girl seems to think that the fellow is evil in some way, but also claims that he hasn't done anything threatening or mean to her. Perhaps she witnessed him doing something to someone else? Or maybe she knows him from somewhere? Sounds bothersome.
Dan's frown shifted to surprise as the guy then politely bowed and greeted the cat girl. Since he noticed the cat girl start to move quickly, he momentarily looked down at her, only to see her rising to her feet. He then quickly looked back at the approaching leather-clad fellow. As the fellow started talking, Dan corrected his posture and thoughtfully considered the fellow's words, inspecting his expression. After the cat girl started speaking, he glanced back over at her, and carefully inspected her as well.
There are two oddities I noticed in what he just said. Firstly, he made it sound like he's familiar with her, but he doesn't seem to know her name. Secondly, his last comment sounds like a veiled threat followed by a quick correction to try and cover it up. After all, the expression he just directed at me counters the assertion that I am a decent person. This fellow is definitely trying to manipulate her, especially with that bow he just made...
...But this girl genuinely seems to be afraid of him. She looks ready to brawl.
After the cat girl expressed her incredulity and provided a command, Dan glanced around. Evidently, several people were now paying attention to them from the safety of the crowded walkways. A few students in elegant uniforms seemed to be urgently moving towards them as well. Seeing this, Dan regained his composer, smiled, and gently grabbed the closest shoulder of the cat girl. "This is a peaceful place. Let's not bare our claws here, alright?" He tried to squeeze her shoulder a little, just enough to try and calm her down, and smiled warmly down to her.
He then looked over at the other fellow - the one in leather - and looked more stern. "As for you, explain yourself. Why are you following her around?" He released the cat girl's shoulder, and gestured towards the pair of students who were now walking over to them along the field. "You've already caused a scene, so more threats and antagonistic behavior won't go over well."
Arthur stared at the cat girl as she explained that Arthur was a bad man while he walked up. Well she wasn't wrong. He thought, he had done a lot of atrocious acts in his past, things he could never forgive himself for and people would not forgive him for those acts. He thought back to the one of the first people he had murdered, commanded by his Don, he had to kill a man who owned a business that they controlled, turned out he ratted the family out. Arthur was told to take the man and force him to bury his own wife alive or he'd shoot his children. So the man did. Arthur was told to shoot the children but he couldn't. Not kids. So his partner did then the owner of the business. Arthur was pretty scarred by that, but that was how his world worked. He had to have been 16 at the time.
Now being brought back to reality, Arthur took a deep breath when this girl said he was a bad man. " Well. I can't say you're not wrong. " Arthur commented while he shrugged his shoulders. " Most people are bad people. " His voice sounded dead, he looked like death. The cat girl turned around to face him looking skittish with her claws out while trying to act vicious. Arthur's demeanor and face didn't change for a couple moments.
But then his lips turned into a smile and he began to laugh now, he was caught off guard by this girl, trying to intimidate him and show her claws. After a few seconds of Arthur laughing, he wiped a tear from his tired eyes as he calmed down. " Whoo. That was a good one there, cat girl, you had me for a moment there. " Arthur's lips went from a smile to the scowl he had previously. " Please. " he didn't sound impressed now, quite serious actually. " I'm trying to hurt you. Obviously I'm in no condition to hurt you. If my missing arm wasn't a telltale sign. "
Arthur's amber eyes moved to the scrawny boy in some plain looking clothes with a cloak on once he asked why he was following her and that he was causing a scene, Arthur hadn't done a thing was already being blamed. For his looks most likely, he knew he looked tired and mean. And this girl flipping out was not helping his position either. " I differ, scrawny. " Arthur commented as he stared at him. " This cat girl says I am a bad man. She's looks scared and I gave no indication of that and merely asked her a question as to why she thought I was a bad man. While she is the one scrambling away. " Arthur explained while his eyes moved to the girl, he could hear students approaching them but he cared not for them.
" I walked through the gate, thats how I got here. But let me ask or more like breakdown for you. You seemed like you were reading something back there but I could not see anything. Interesting don't you think? " Arthur swiped his hand in front of him for his screen to appear. " You able to see who people are, Mayacel Ker'rosam? " Arthur asked her then his eyes moved to the other two. " Dan Swift and Rosanna Payne. " Arthur finished.
Alek whistled along as he perused the festivities that the academy had thrown for the citizens. Clutching the fresh wound on his side, he winced with every step, but still kept a jolly attitude. He was never able to enjoy such festivities in his old world, so even through the pain, Alek took all the sights and surroundings in. Sighing as he pulled his hand away from his wound and found part of it stained dark red, the wound bleeding through the bandage, he shook his head as he remembered that he'd received countless worse injuries than this in his past life.
He didn't like showing off much, but he knew that if he wanted to increase his skills in combat in this new form, he'd have to work at every opportunity he got. So he had been away at a few sparring matches. Still feeling confident from the few civilians he'd defeated in the first matches, Alek took a few moments to muse once again over the man who had so easily subdued and defeated him. A formidable knight, both tough, strong, and vengeful. It was no surprise Alek had gotten such a large wound from the knight's strike, even in a sparring match. But fortunately the wound wasn't too serious.
Alek placed his winter coat back over his shoulders in hopes of covering up the wound, but also warming up a bit more since the exercise from the matches had nearly worn off by now. He still had a few Rykes left over from his designated spending money at the festival, he didn't want to waste much of the money he made back in the fighting matches and other competitions he had participated in over the day. Feeling a growl in his stomach, Alek picked up the scent of fresh cooked meat, and his mouth watered as he moved over towards the smoky and earthy smell.
What Alek found when he got to the source of the smell was not what he was expecting... a crowd had built up around the skewer station, and was slowly devolving into argument. Feeling a bit uneasy, he pushed past them, and talked to the orc running the food station, as he paid for a few boar skewers. Finally looking towards the others after he paid for and began to take a few bites out of the skewers, he stood in between all of them. "Hey, can you leave each other alone?" Alek spoke up. "We're all just trying to enjoy our time here, aren't we?"
Arthur laughed and Naya's fur bristled. He thought this was funny? She would fight him. She let out a growl but paused when a hand was placed on her shoulder. Dan was right, this was supposed to be a peaceful place, and her baring claws at a one armed man didn't look good on her part so she withdrew them. Still she didn't believe for a second he wasn't dangerous. "If you knew I was scared why would you keep following?" She exclaimed, ears remaining folded back. "Like that would make me feel any better!"
Then the one-armed man began picking her apart and Naya's face went pale once more. He had figured that out from her reading the window? Wait... but wouldn't that mean that he'd have to know what she was looking at? He then swiped the air and said their names and Naya's eyes went wide. Did he...Did he have the same ability as her? If so that was even worse. "Yeah I can see that! I also know what you are!" She hissed again.
Someone else stepped in, a boy with a sword, and asked that they leave each other alone. Naya couldn't agree more. That was all she wanted in the first place. "Yeah! Go away!"
Dan, the Thoughtful, Plain-Clothed Traveler
Dan's stern look shifted to perplexment as the fellow looked his way and said something about 'differ' and 'scrawny'. His next batch of garbled words didn't bring much additional clarity. He sighed as he thought, analyzing the leather-man's words as he spoke them. Towards the end of his comments, Dan had a look of realization, and his expression shifted to more of a neutral look. While the cat girl pointed out a possible inconsistency in his motives, he thought a bit more.
He's definitely trying to insult me by calling me scrawny. He also has an odd mix of complex vocabulary and poor grammar, so he has to be a relatively intelligent foreigner. But his clothes look like they're in terrible condition, and if he's using his arm as an excuse, it's got to be a new injury. Why is he being so confrontational, and why is he so upset that the cat girl thought he was 'bad'? She is clearly not the one who gave him the injury...Ah! That must mean that he feels guilty about something, and is trying to figure out whether she knows about what he feels guilty about.
And, she's right. Even if we take him at his word, he's either lying or he's irrational. Knowingly following someone that is fleeing from you is an admission of hostile intent. I'll have to press him on that if I want to settle this issue.
Once the fellow looked over to the catgirl and started mentioning how he entered the city, Dan cringed. He watched the fellow muse about the cat girl appearing to be reading something, then make a strange gesture and mention a few phrases that were presumably their names. Dan raised an eyebrow, looking unimpressed. "That's your excuse for knowingly stalking a frightened girl? What in all of Ryke is wrong with you? Are you sane?" Dan then raised his voice, looking around to the crowd as he announced, "Not only did he just admit that he is knowingly chasing after this girl despite her insistence that he leave her alone, he's trying to assert that she cast a spell on him. With her bare hands!"
At that point one of the guys from the crowd, who was holding some skewers of improved Bugg Meat, raced over, stopping right between the two parties, and started philosophizing. Dan cringed in annoyance for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure after the cat girl agreed with the fellow, and added, "This fellow is right. Has this poor girl not suffered enough at this man's whims? How could anyone enjoy a festival with a man like him following them around?"
At that point, the two students who had stood off to the side stepped closer. They more bulky one raised his hands and asserted, "Alright, alright, enough of this." He pointed over to the guy in leather as the guy next to him forcefully moved the guy with the Bugg Meat and the plain-clothed traveler away. "Is what that man said true? Were you following her because you thought she cast a spell on you?" After hearing the man's response, he nodded and quickly gestured over to the cat girl. "And you, did you cast a spell on him? Are you pretending to be frightened just to avoid getting caught?"
After receiving their comments, once the other student he was with returned to his side, he scratched his chin, thinking for a bit. After being escorted away by one of the students, Dan watched the rest of the exchange with an intrigued grin.
Arthur Verg
The one armed man now knew the situation got out of hand when a new person arrived. His eyes looked at this one when they got in the middle of them, holding skewers with food on them. Saying something along the lines of leaving each other alone and just enjoying themselves. Arthur had half a mind to take a skewer and stab him in his eye with it, who was this guy? " You know who this one is? Ah. Doesn't matter. Shove off, will you? " Arthur sighed of annoyance now. Whatever he would say would not matter, everyone was against him.
Arthur stared at each of these people, their disapproval looks. What had he even done? Then the scrawny man spoke again. Insisting he stalked Maya and they could not enjoy the festival. " Stalking? " Arthur looked almost shocked before his demeanor changed to angry. " You know nothing of stalking, buddy. " Arthur had definitely stalked people to end their life, his one hand clenched into a fist, he had half a mind to beat this man into the dirt and make sure he can never see again, eye gouging was easier than people thought! No... Arthur knew he was getting angry and took a deep breath to calm himself. He was a bad man, after all. Of course coming into this world there'd be problems. Then again, maybe he should make sure this man never walk again, he was thinking as he unclenched his fist. " When did I state she casted a spell? " Arthur stared at the fool.
Arthur scoffed at what Dan was doing, crowd support, eh? Opinion of the mass? No. Arthur was better than that. But he had half a mind to break his legs to make sure he never walk again... Then students got involved. Arthur sighed deeply with annoyance now, this really got out of hand. The stupidity of it all. Arthur looked at the student who asked if he was casted a spell upon. Which to the one armed arm shook his head. This was ridiculous... But, Arthur had a trick up his sleeve. " Look, sir. I was merely asking directions to where I could find one to talk to about attending the academy. But when I asked that, they began to berate me and say I was following this girl, trying to ruin my chances of joining. " Arthur explained. " I'm very tired and have been walking for a few days now just to try and enjoy myself at the festival for a little bit before I talk to someone as pristine and untarnished, such as yourself. I'd rather not be called a stalker and be treated so rudely. I couldn't hurt a fly in my... "
Arthur looked away and looked like he wanted to cry. He cleared his throat and took a deep breath. " Unfortunate condition. I thought I'd be treated better here of all places. I've heard so much of this city of Ryken. " Arthur placed a hand on his own shoulder where his missing arm was at. " I guess they like to berate cripples. And think them as stalkers. "
Two students joined the confrontation and attempted to mediate. They questioned about a spell and Naya was genuinely confused. "Spell? What spell? I don't know any magic." Why were they talking about spells?
Then Arthur began talking and Naya's jaw dropped. What the hell? He was twisting things! "You never asked about that!" She exclaimed "You just kept questioning why I didn't want to talk to you! You don't want to be treated like a stalker don't follow people that don't want to talk to you!"
Dan, the Thoughtful, Plain-Clothed Traveler
As the two gave their statements, the two fellows in the school uniforms watched. The student who pushed Dan and the other fellow back seemed to be looking at the one-armed man's forehead as he was speaking, then shifted his gaze over to the forehead of the cat girl as she exclaimed her disagreement. He then leaned over and whispered into the ear of the student who had spoken to them earler.
Once their statements were made, the thoughtful guy clapped his hands, looking stern. "Alright, that's enough, both of you." He gestured next to himself, to the other student who whispered into his ear. "This here's Kyle Aethwright. He has mental powers. While you were giving your testimonies, he was reading your thoughts." He gestures to the cat girl and looked over at the one-armed man, adding, "He discerned that she genuinely believes that she can't use spells, and that she has reason to believe that you might kill her," he then gestured toward the one-armed man, adding, "and that you thought of us as fools to be tricked."
He then crossed his arms, glaring at the one-armed man. "But even ignoring that, you're intolerable. You keep making excuses for absurd behavior and insulting other people. Our job is to keep our honorable campus free of misbehaving cretins such as yourself. So, if you vow to never verbally berate others and to leave people alone when they ask you to do so, at least until you leave the fairgrounds, I will permit you to stay. Otherwise, I will be escorting you to the guards." As he made his last comment, he glanced over to the catgirl. "As for you, be warned that violence outside of the combat area is not permitted. As long as you understand that, you are free to go."
He then aggressively stepped towards the one-armed man and moved his hands down to his hips. One of his hands brushed past a mace that was hanging from a ring set into his belt. He continued shooting the one-armed man a stern glare. "Now then, repeat after me: 'I vow, under the power of the royal family of Ryke, that I...'" The other student stood at a distance, staring at the one-armed man's forehead, with his hand at his waist, resting against a pouch of sorts.
There was still a small group of people gathered a few dozen feet around them as the student in the fancy uniform approached the one-armed man. Some of them seemed to be expecting a fight to break out. But a good portion of the people decided to leave. Dan took the opportunity to head over to the catgirl, once she made her way away from the scene. He waved to her and quickly commented, "Sorry you had to deal with that. Are you okay?" After her response, he smiled and held out his hand. "I'm Dan, by the way."
After some brief introductions, he looked around. After failing to see whatever or whoever he was looking for, he sighed, then asked her, "If you want, I could keep you company here. I lost the other person I was with, after all." He then leaned in a bit and whispered, "I'm trying to get into the academy, so if you help, I'll try to get you in as well." He then pulled back, standing upright again, and added, "Besides, fairs are best enjoyed with others, right?" He grinned warmly with the last comment.
Arthur Verg
The one armed man seemed pretty sure of himself, he was a good liar back home and knew who to deceive people. He did it for a long time while siphoning money from his gangster family. Deceiving school children shouldn't be too difficult. But upon this Kyle character being introduced, Arthur kept playing the role of the defeated and berated handicapped man. Until the words mental powers left the lips of one of the academy members, Arthur's eyes widen for a moment and he knew he had been found out. Standing straight up now and changed his whole demeanor. He knew he was about to be found out, guess it was different here than back home. His memories and thought couldn't be known back home, but here it was possible. Arthur knew what he would invest in next after he was able to get his arm and vision.
Arthur looked annoyed the entire time he was spoken to by the student, wishing he had both arms so he could strangle- no. He was different now, he wasn't a part of the family anymore. " Fine. I swear not act like a 'cretin.' As you stated. " Arthur quoted the word with only his one hand, using his index and middle finger to quote the word. While unhappy, Arthur did repeat the vow they made him recite. Giving the student the same glare back as he recited it, feeling like he didn't really do anything wrong.
Afterwards and when people finally left and he was alone, Arthur let out a long and frustrated sigh, it hadn't even been two minutes, literally, and he was already getting into trouble. Arthur shook his head looking at his arm that no longer existed, it bothered him immensely how he came to this world without it. His anger was boiling and he wanted to destroy and kill! It was so easy to do so!... not in his control though. But Arthur took a long and deep breath then exhaled, there was no point in creating more trouble, he had a mission he needed to complete.
Feeling like he maybe he was in the wrong and not realizing it until just now, he turned to see that Dan with the cat girl Naya. Maybe he should apologize, if he wanted to change he had to do what he wouldn't normally do. Which was be the bigger person and better man. And this would be very difficult for Arthur, he wasn't the best with expressing his feelings and showing his softer side. He was good at being a prick since that's what he grew up around, and good with how to rid of a person and the best way to hurt a person... And how to get information out of a man.
Arthur sighed and began walking his way over to the two, " Hold on a moment. " Arthur called, holding one hand up to show he was unarmed and wasn't going to do anything. " I should start off by saying... " Arthur sighed. " Okay... This is harder than I thought. " he muttered to himself looking away then looked back to the two. " Alright... I wanna start off by saying I am sorry for causing any stress, harm, irritation, or fear. " His eyes moved to Naya next. " It was not my intention to make you feel uncomfortable and I was and am NOT going to hurt you. You're right though. I am not a good man, I've done many a terrible deeds, but I am trying to change. " Arthur admitted.
Looking to Dan, " And Dan. I'm sorry for insulting you. I am only trying to join the academy and wasn't trying to make trouble for any of you. " Arthur looked at the two, feeling a bit better now. " That wasn't so bad. " he said to himself. " Well don't mind me, you two have a good day or whatever people say. " Arthur then departed walking away from them, thinking of how he could get into thr academy.
Arthur began reciting the oath and the crowd dispersed, Naya included. She really did not want to stick around after all of this. Before she got too far though the boy she had ran into caught up to her, asking if she was okay. "Yep." She answered with a sigh. "Just glad that's over." Dan offered his hand and she took it, returning his smile. "Nayacel. But feel free to call me Naya."
It seemed she had spoken a little to soon about things being done as Arthur called out to them. She turned, ears laid flat, ready to tell him off, when he started apologizing. Naya tilted her head, a little surprised by what she was hearing. Was this the same guy who was demanding information out of her earlier? "Oh...well... I might have overreacted a little." She admitted, rubbing the back of her head. She was weak to straight forward apologies and, now that he wasn't being creepy he didn't seem like all that bad a guy. "Hey, um, you might want to take care of that title before trying to join. You're not even supposed to be in the city with that."
Arthur walked off and Naya turned back to Dan. "Well that was a thing." She commented. Dan mentioned staying together and joining the academy and Naya tilted an ear. "Hm... I don't know about joining the academy. I don't think I'm smart enough. But sure! I'll help if I can!" She chirped.
Dan, the Thoughtful, Plain-Clothed Traveler
After Dan heard the one-armed guy call out to him and the girl he was talking to, the smile dropped from his face. He turned over to the fellow with an eyebrow raised, but patiently waited to hear what the fellow had to say. He raised an eyebrow about the fellow's comments about how he was trying to change, but nodded along as the guy apologized. Dan smirked after the fellow's rather uncertain farewell, and looked over at Naya quizzically as she tried to warn him about a title. Thereafter, as the guy turned to leave, Dan called out, "Farewell!"
Dan turned back to look at Naya once she started speaking to him. He chuckled after her comment, and nodded. "Definitely a foreigner. There're some strange people out there." Once Naya mentioned her doubts about joining the academy, Eric frowned a little in thought. He seemed reassured by her enthusiasm about helping though. "As long as you want me to, I'll give you an opportunity. Whether or not it works out is up to you."
With that, he started leading her around the festival grounds. There truly were a lot of different stalls. Some of the students set up games with little prizes, whereas other students were selling food or handicrafts. Some of the students were selling fairly high-grade equipment, such as magic catalysts and potions. Dan looked like he was very impressed as he walked around. Every now and then, he'd lead Naya over to one of the stands and pay for a chance to throw a rock at a target, or he'd buy some food that looked good. At other times, Naya would do the same to him.
After an hour or two of this back and forth, Dan eventually set his eyes on a stall where several people were gathered around. The people who were gathered in front of the stall seemed to be looking on towards a person who was seated in front of the stall. The person was biting at his nails while the student behind the stall confidently placed a game piece onto one of the colored squares of the board that was between them. The guy in front of the stall then sighed and hung his head. "Damn...I lost."
With his admission of defeat, everyone around him groans, and the student cackles with a sort of prideful laughter. "Hahaha! As I said, I'm unbeatable! It doesn't matter what challenge you pose. Now pay up!"
The guy sighs and hands over a few coins, then rises from the stool and walks away, looking frustrated. The guy behind the stall looks around at the other people, grinning mischievously, and comments, "Well? Any other foolish ones want to challenge me? You stand much to gain, if you think you can beat me." He gestured up at the sign above the stall, then flomboyantly drew a lock of his blonde hair away from his smug face. Dan glanced up to see what was on it.
"The Undefeatable Gamer! Challenge Me to Any Game! If you win, 5000 Rykes! 100 Rykes per try."
Dan then raised an eyebrow. He leaned in towards Naya and commented, "This one looks a bit different from the others. Let's ask around for a bit and see what's going on here." He walked up to a few of the people in the group of onlookers as someone else took a seat on the stool, and asked them what was going on at this stall.
The first guy Dan spoke to said, "Huh? Oh, the student there says that he'll pay anyone who can beat him at a game of their choice five thousand Rykes...but, no one has beaten him all day. He's really annoying though, so we've been trying to find someone who can put him in his place."
The next guy responded, "The student said his name was...Flavian Ilisidoor? I think he's a noble of some sort, but that he didn't even know how to play War Squares earlier this morning, could you believe it? But even after he was taught the basics, he still managed to win!"
The third guy Dan asked added, "A friend of mine challenged him to a game of cards, but he told me that it was as if that student knew exactly what cards he had every round. But he doesn't seem to have an accomplice in the crowd, so we're not sure how he does it! He's definitely cheating though! I'll catch him for sure, just you wait."
Dan frowned after hearing their comments, and headed back over to Naya, keeping out of earshot of the guy behind the stand. "So what did you discover? It sounds to me like everyone thinks he's cheating, but they can't figure out how he's cheating."
