Eric, the Training Nut

The events following the fall of the last bandit were chaotic and swift. Eric heard the lizard-thing from earlier call out something about survivors, but what followed was a crowd of horrified and shellshocked villagers running away from him. Once they came to the camp, one of them, the lady that Eric recognized as being the village chief's wife, spotted the supply carts in the bandit camp and called out to the others. Eric turned to them and tried to express some amount of gratitude for their survival, but they roughly pushed him away and swarmed the supply carts. At some point, one of the villagers even surprised Eric by tearing the handaxe out of his hand and rushing off. Within a mere minute or two, the camp was emptied and the villagers raced off on the road to the town that they were so used to doing business with.

Eric sat on the ground in a daze. He looked around at the people who remained for a moment. The villagers, slaves, and bandits were all gone. Aside from the few stragglers, only the dead remained. Eric grimaced as he looked around. The corpses were still fresh. Blood continued to drain out onto the grass and dirt. The stench of a battlefield rose. Smoke continued rising from the flames around the village.

Eric took the sights in for several moments in a sort of confused horror, then realized something. "Wait...MOM! DAD!" He shot to his feet and raced back over to the village, practically sprinting as he went. He gasped for air once he approached the gate of the village and the carnage arrayed around it. Dozens of partially dismantled corpses, many gored by teeth and claws, others burned, and the vast majority shredded and spiked with arrows and lacerations. The stench of blood and gut contents and burning hair was unbearably strong, and it only continued to worsen in the heat of the nearby flames. Some of the corpses here hidden beneath the wreckage of the cart that the reptile had violently maneuvered and topped in order to take out more bandits. The horses were both mangled in front of the shattered beams that the cart was once made of, smoking as the flames licked about their hides and hairs.

Eric had an extremely strong stomach, but he still had to fight his nerves upon seeing the scene. As he continued to stare, he eventually found what he was looking for. One of the corpses was a mangled lady in a dress, with several fletched arrows sticking out of her back and neck, and numerous gaping stab and slash wounds across her chest. Another one was an archer with a shattered bow and an empty quiver, his spine shattered and his torso split horizontally. Eric gritted his teeth and clenched his fists hard as he looked between the two. He knelt down and slammed one of his fists into the ground with a heavy THUD.

His voice quivered, and he spoke softly, with a sad and perplexed expression. "No!...Why?!...Why would anyone do this?..." He raised his eyes towards the remains of the village gate. Flames licked around the timbers. The signpost which had once said "LANOST" was now little more than a chunk of charred wood. Aside from the crackling of the fire and the occasional collapse of the wooden huts beyond, there was nothing beyond the sign but silence.

Hunter stared at the burning village, his eyes full of grief, regret and sadness. There wasn't much he could have done, especially since he arrived too late. But this brought him back to his home, his trauma. How the invaders destroyed everything he loved, everything he had worked for. His home. His rock. This was the same thing... The outworlder took a deep breath, realizing tears were rolling down his cheeks.

He wiped the tears away with a finger and cleared his throat with a sigh, sniffling a bit as he sighed sadly. How would these people move on? There wasn't much here he could do now. He had failed these people much like his own, the only difference was he didn't get these people killed like his own. He swore he saw his people here in the village as he fought these bandits.

There wasn't much left here, he could try to help these people but they were already abandoning each other and leaving. How could he help people when they ran in fear, why did they not gather with one another and stand together in strength? He had to remember, these weren't his people, these were a people who never knew war. If Hunter could find that elf who saved him earlier, he would see if he could join up with her, she saved him and he wanted to protect her for that reason. And she seemed somewhat a airhead.

Interactions:

It was strange, Peggy thought to her self as she watched the panicked villagers raid the bandit's supplies. Where were the Grimm? With this much negative emotion in the air they should have been swarmed by now. And yet... nothing. The only monster in sight was the big lizard that had helped her and he was definitely a Creature of Grimm. He lacked the bone plates. And he talked! Grimm couldn't do that.

It wasn't the only thing that was strange. Her lack of ears and tail for one. Those things aren't supposed to just disappear. And she couldn't feel her Aura. Like at all. That ever present energy was just gone. Her Semblance was working just fine though and her shoulder had finally stopped itching. It always itched when she was healing. She pulled the singed bandage off to reveal a scar where there had been a gaping wound only minutes before, and even that was fading away. It was a shame her favorite PJs were covered in blood though.

Oh! And there was another weird thing. Her body felt good. She didn't feel sick and she felt stronger than ever. But she couldn't have gotten better, the doctors said that was impossible.

So what did this all mean? No Gimm. No Aura. Two constants of life on Remnant were missing. Was this not Remnant? A healthy body and missing appendages, as if it wasn't her body. At least not the body she's always had. Maybe... was it possible? Had that dream been real? Had she really..? "Oh dust. Lilith is going to be so sad that I died."

"Thankless, feckless, pathetic fools." Came the voice of the little black dragon, atop a bandit wagon that he claimed as spoils. Having pulled it into town to take advantage of the morbid warmth the dead village offered. He wasn't about to give them the satisfaction of looting this one. The horse had been taken. But he didn't really care. It was more about denying the villagers the use of the supplies.

They could not have willed up a kind word to send his way. They did not even care enough to search for survivors or bury their dead. How is it then that he was seen as a monster, when the state of the world was this sorry.

"No good deed goes unpunished." He would grumble to himself.

But to the boy who looked out among the burned village... "This a sick and stagnant world, boy. There is a certain sickness to it. I've lived among monsters my life in this world, but I disgusted to say that the day I venture out into the civilized lands I am met with nothing but the familiar."

Should he feel sad that so many people lost their lives? Probably. But he didn't. There was a sort of benefit of detachment at being an otherworlder. These weren't his people. Not yet. Anyway. Besides, the past years he spent in wild lands had made him quite accostumed to such savage acts. Humans weren't the only victims. Even monsters preyed on themselves.

"Whats worse, is that this very thing will happen again and again until someone makes a change to this world. This world should have been one of untapped potential and magic that could have lead to so many grand things. Instead this world is barely more pleasant then the most barbaric of medieval civilizations."

Eric, the Training Nut

By this point, the crowd of around 2 dozen people who had rushed away were now steadily disappearing into the distance down the road. The birds were making their calls, and the animals were still hiding away. The smoke and flames from the village were keeping would-be scavengers away for the time being. The supplies that the lizard protected from the hasty and fearful villagers were damaged, and some of them were soiled by the blood or flames that they rolled around in, but plenty remained salvageable. In the bandit camp, there were several useful items lying around from what fell off of the carts that the villagers took with them in their haste, and which they didn't take the time to fully acquire from among the various tents that were set up throughout. The little orphan girl that Eric had carried out of the bandit-infested village seemed to have wandered off with the rest of the villagers, but the elf, the hunter, the lizard, and the little girl seemed to still be around. Off in the far distance, it was still possible to hear the faint rustling of the scattered villagers and bandits who had run away from the fight, preferring to take their chances in the wilderness.

The boy continued staring out at the burning village beyond for a few minutes, gathering his thoughts. The sadness in his expression mellowed out a little, replaced by a stern grimace. As the reptilian thing from earlier approached and started philosophizing, the boy stood and turned to face him. He looked over at the thing reverently, but the content of the lizard's words, made him grimace. He clenched his fist as the thing finished its comments about the barbary of the world, then turned back towards the burning village.

"I'm nothing special. I don't think I can change the world." As he spoke, his voice growled. He paused briefly, then glared down at the ravaged bandit corpses. "But if I can stop stuff like this from happening, I'll do whatever it takes." He then glanced around, and spotted a shovel in the hands of one of the corpses of the villagers. He cautiously stepped around the other corpses to get over to it, then gently removed it from the corpse's hand.

As he stood back up, he looked back over at the dragon. He gripped the shovel tightly in his right hand. The muscles in his arm rippled, and the wooden shaft creaked under the pressure. "This...this is intolerable...I'm going to bury them."

With that said, he walked off a few dozen feet beside the road and started digging. The ground was soft, and the shovel was sturdy. Clods of dirt flew off to the side. The boy's burns and wounds gradually closed as he worked, and before long, the only trace of his prior injuries was the damage to his threadbare clothing. His work was rhythmic, coordinated, and efficient. He barely even broke a sweat.

Several minutes passed, and a 3' deep, 6' wide pit was formed in the ground around the young man, with dirt piled up beside it. He then slammed the shovel down into the dirt next to the grave, climbed out of the pit, and trudged back over to the corpses out in front of the village. He grabbed the lady in the dress, with the arrows sticking out of her, and removed the arrows. The procedure was rough and inelegant. Tears streamed down the kid's face as he looked down at the lady, glaring at her fatal wounds for a few agonizing seconds. He then averted his eyes, slammed his fist into the ground with a thud, wiped the tears from his face, and hauled her up onto his shoulder. He carried the corpse over to the pit that he dug, and carefully lowered her down into it, resting her on the ground below. He righted her dress, clasped her hands in front of her waist, and lastly, he gently closed her eyes. "Rest with Oerlindel, mom."

He then covered her with the dirt that he had dug out, wandered over to the pile of wreckage from the cart, tore off a plank of wood, snapped it into a 3' long chunk, and wandered back over to the freshly covered pit. He then violently slammed the wood down into the end of the pit. He backed up a moment to look over the grave, and nodded. He then pulled out the shovel, moved around to the side of the grave furthest from the road, and started digging a few feet away from it, beginning work on the next grave...

The elf had run off to do her own thing. She hadn't stayed long enough in one spot to see the villagers swarm over the carts like a swarm of rabid beasts. Kaos had headed to the direction where the devastation of the forest seemed to be. She had wanted to see it for herself how bad exactly it was supposed to be. The nearby grass and trees, which she presume to have been used as lumber by the village had all been burned down. Here and there, she could see some of the trunk to have fallen. Although it would appear to be bad, it didn't seem to be as bad as she had honestly expected. She had assumed the worst since there didn't seem to be any effort in trying to stop the fire. "Hmm.." she hummed, Kaos could just consider it part of the circle of life. Nature was quite the fickle mistress after all. There are occasion where they need to cut down in order to maintain the status quo. She could just chalk it up to that.

She, then, turned back her attention to the ruined village. Kaos wrinkled her nose at the sight. It was truly unfortunate that the first town that she had to visit had to ended up this way. She slowly walked back taking in the sight, though it hadn't made the prettiest picture. It might have been the materials they've used to build them but it really didn't take much for it to burn. Kaos hadn't expected that she'd be sightseeing in this manner. She clicked her tongue. The villagers were quite pitiful but it wasn't like she knew any of them enough to feel something about it. She didn't have any obligation to actually help them either. She could see a boy, barely of age in her eyes, the only one who actually seemed to do something for the dead. The rest of the villagers seemed more preoccupied in what they can do for the living than the dead, which in a way, did make more sense to her. There was nothing left they could do for the dead. It wasn't just the villagers though, there was also the captured-but-now-free slaves too. Were they slaves or just kidnapped to be sold by those bandits? The girl who's wound burned was interesting. Perhaps she wasn't all human?

Kaos thought of the monster which could speak. He was really quite interesting but also highly unusual. The way that he acted made the elf curious about him. She looks at him with curious but wary eyes. Was this monster actually perhaps one of them that God spoke about? She couldn't remember most of what they said but did they actually mention that the group of them should help? "Mmmm.." she rubs her chin, adopting a thinking pose. She wasn't quite sure if she still wanted to talk to him now but she was sure that she should probably continue her journey. "Should I stay here for the night though?" People may or may not come so it didn't seem to be that safe to stay. Not to mention, accommodations here were no longer possible. She glances at the burnt houses.

The tail of the dragon whipped against the side of the cart as he watched the boy. "You don't know if you can change the world... have you tried yet?" He asked.

"The rest of these villagers left this town without looking back. But not you. You care enough about it and its people to stay and bury them. I would say, that of this village, that makes you special. But even that were not the case... there are those in this world who are. There are those in this world given the power by this worlds god to change it."

"I daresay that if those special individuals can make a change in this world, that it is entirely possible that any ordinary villager can. This world will not change overnight... no... it starts with the changing of one heart and one mind."

Hinkir did not feel like helping to dig. His eye hurt. He could say it was a stabbing pain in his head, but he didn't know if he had the good humor to do that. It would be untrue either way... it ached though. A deep sharp penetrating ache.

His good eye turned to look at the muttering elf, "Would it matter if you did, girl? But one such as you should probably be on her way. Soon enough scavengers will come sniffing for scraps of meat. As the wind blows through these woods, to the monsters around this place will smell like a grand cook fire."

After the village evacuated, Hunter couldn't do much but watch as people abandoned one another or left together. Hunter didn't really know what to do, the memories of his people came back, but he quickly pushed those thoughts back. Moving through the burned village, looking at all the dead, it was too much for the warrior. He sighed sadly and moved on, looking up he saw that giant lizard and the elf that he had helped him.

Should he go make his apologies? Over losing a eye? That would spell bad for him but he was a warrior, not a coward. Hunter, holding his Tomahawk that laid on his belt walked over to where the two were. He moved in front of Kaos and placed a hand on her shoulder. " You okay, Kaos? " he asked as his eyes turned to the large lizard, staring at where his eyes used to be, the warrior felt guilt, after a few moments, Hunter cleared his throat. " I am sorry for the injury. I was too quick and callous on my actions that resulted in you losing a eye. " Hunter formally spoke now.

The young boy listened silently and thoughtfully to the lizard fellow as he went about his grave digging. He paused after the lizard mentioned those 'given power by the world's god'. He then continued along his task, frowning as he did, but still listening.

At the mention of changing his heart and mind, the boy frowned even harder. "So be it." He said, slamming the shovel into the ground again. He turned towards the lizard with an impassions, but furious look. "You sound like you know what you're talking about, so I'll be relying on you to help me do that."

As the lizard then turned to the others at the camp, the boy walked over, lifted up the corpse of the archer, hefted it over to the ditch he dug, carefully lowered it into place, removed the implanted projectile scraps, moved the fellow's limbs into a restful posture, closed his eyes, and climbed back out. He then knelt next to the ditch, furrowing his brow hard, and mumbled, "Rest with Oerlindel, dad."

He then covered the grave with the dirt that was piled up next to it, tamped the dirt down, went back over to the broken remains of the cart, snapped off another makeshift headboard, returned to the fresh grave, and slammed the hunk of wood in at the head of the grave. He then moved over to the other side of the road and started digging a whole bunch of more shallow graves, only around 2' deep. His skin glistened with tiny beads of sweat. He was rushing along at an incredible pace, and his breathing rate was starting to show that.

He kept listening to the others as he went about forming rows of 5 along the road. The forest around them was now quiet enough that he could easily make out what they were saying even when they weren't shouting over to the lizard, even over the sounds of his shoveling. That said, his hearing wasn't exceptional, so at their normal conversation volume level, he misheard words every now and then. He kept looking up over at the group that was talking off in the distance every now and then, evidently interested in their conversation in spite of that.

"Ah!" She let out a gasp of realization while her eyes widen from shock. She hadn't expected for the monster to address her. Although his words made her realize what she had previously overlooked. In spite of what has happened, this was still not considered to be the end. There might not be anymore issues in the side of human beings, however, ironically, it was a monster that had to remind her the dangers of their kind hold. No doubt the acrid smell of blood, smoke and ash would make this area catch the attention of monsters especially with those heightened senses. In this case, it really didn't seem well to stay here any longer.

The stranger that she saved have also reappeared in front of her. This time, he seemed to be acting more normally compared to the time he was earlier. "I'm fine." she responds, "Although I think I might need to leave soon so I can find somewhere safe to rest sooner." the elf sighs. Honestly speaking she was already tired after everything but it was a lot better to deal with a bit more walking than a pack of monsters on their way here. She watches Hunter and the drake interact, as the former apologizes for his actions causing the drake to lose its high. The treatment has been delayed for a while so she wasn't sure if she should offer to help heal it. It would be fine if she manages to do it and build a good relationship with the monster but it'll be troublesome if things go wrong. Kaos decides to hold her tongue instead.

Kaos pursed her lips. One of the villagers, the young boy who was silently working caught her eye. It wasn't like she knew him before but his attitude seemed more snappy and vengeful especially based on how it interacted with the drake. Well, it would be strange if the events that had happened wouldn't have changed him. What she was curious was how much and how hard he was working. Kaos could never be able to do that. No way. Her body may have been healthier compared to her previous life but she was far too used in letting others help her or do her work for her. Either way, she really needed to get going. Should she tell them that she's gonna go now? It seemed strange to inform them given that they were merely strangers. Kaos took advantage while they were interacting to silently continue her journey. Her nose was covered but the smell only seemed to stronger while she was there. "Ugh." she whined, complaining. This day sucks. Her eyes started scanning her surroundings. Now where was she going to stay for the night?
