I'm asking this because it just came to my mind and I might make one. Please answer honestly.

Bit of common sense here but the best bet is to avoid certain units, i.e SS and other 'known' criminal groups.

The only German things that I can think of are Volksturm (last ditch, civilan conscripts) and regular Heer (basic infantry) so you can avoid any 'questionable orders'. It is really important to understand that not all Germans were Nazis, many soldiers were simply fighting for their country and wage. Perhaps that could be a topic that occurs in the roleplay itself? Discussions on how deplorable the actions are of certain SS groups, murdering entire villages and so forth. Though as The Dark Wizard The Dark Wizard has said, it needs to be done in a mature and respectful manner. I truely love the uniforms, equipment and weapons used by the German military in the second world war but I only admire the technology/materials themselves, not how they were used.

Japanese are a bit different as they did have a completely different way of looking at things. It's common knowledge that Japanese troops weren't interested in the laws of war and would commit awful crimes such as killing injured soldiers at First Aid Stations and butchering the medical staff as well. As a Brit, I would tread very carefully when roleplaying as a Japanese group set in world war two. Perhaps it would be a idea to look towards other groups such as Submarine crews. Merchant vessels and if done respectfully, Fighter Squadrons.

Just my thoughts and what not. I hope you and the others that are interested in doing a WW2 roleplay will enjoy themselves. ^_^

Idk if this is too late but I just stumbled upon this. I'm German and if you want to make an rp with a WWII setting in Germany you might want to read up on the history of Germany. We actually just covered the topic in my history class.
Here's some stuff you might know or not:

In 1918 Germany had practically lost WWI, the generals wanted to send the marines in one last ditch effort anyways. The navy didn't want to be sent out on a suicide mission and rebelled, the strike reached the workers. Long story short their movement got the Kaiser and nobles abdicated and the social Democratic Party called out the republic.
To end the war they had to sign the treaty of Versailles. They basically had to sign that Germany was solely responsible for WW1, they had limitations on their military and had to pay huge compensation.
People suffered, the young republic wasn't working and made responsible for losing the war, there was no food, Germany couldn't afford the compensation, so they printed money causing huge inflation, they had to reform the currency.

In 1923 Hitler and his party tried to use the chaos to his advantage, there was an coup attempt. It failed he went to prison.
When he was released he returned to his political party (NSDAP - Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei)
He said what the people wanted to hear, get Germany back to it's old glory, jobs for everyone... He used the desperation because of the Great Depression to get people on his side, when the formation of a majority government failed for the fourth time he was chosen to become 'Reichskanzler'.
In 1933 the Reichstag burned, the Reichstag Fire Decree was passed, it basically allowed them to ignore the fundamental rights of the constitution. (It was possible because the constitution had an article that allowed the rights to be bypassed in case of emergency to restore national safety) Freedom of speech, freedom of meeting and other stuff were eradicated. All the while propaganda and stuff were still going. Hitler banned the opposing party's newspapers and they didn't have access to radio, in the new election he got around 44 percent of the votes.
That wasn't enough to just pass laws as he wanted so he let the parliament vote on the enabling act (granted the NSDAP the power to pass laws without the vote of the other parties). They needed two third of votes to pass it. At this point they had already hunted and oppressed the opposing parties, especially social democrats were arrested without explanation. On the voting day Hitler postponed his police unit everywhere to 'secure the building'. The leader of the social democrats was the only one who voted against the act, representative of his party. The act passed. Hitler basically had his dictatorship.
The propaganda and terror got more and more. They started with the cooptation, built the concentration camps (advertising it as a reeducation camp for political enemies), he held speeches and parades to win the people over, they actually had an department for Propaganda.

That's just a short summary of what even happend that Hitler was able to get to power in the first place before WW2. Some people were hopeful other's scared shitless. Boys growing up when Hitler got to power started attending the nazi equivalent to the Boy Scouts just that they were already preparing them to be solider. These kids grew up around propaganda and national socialism. If you didn't fit into Hitler's idea of what a German should be you were in huge danger. They didn't just send Jews and political enemies into the concentration camps but also mentally ill, disabled, homosexuals, gypsies, immigrants, Jehova's witnesses and criminals. The only way you were safe was by being a good Nazi. Of course there were people who resisted like the Weiße rose.
