The stars are going out, planets that used to be habitable are now wandering space-hazards for the few pockets of humanity that remain as a series of ships drifts amongst the dying universe, looking for a new home.
A discovery has been made on A57B-Gamma, a small moon orbiting a gaseous supergiant.
It was found to have a liquid reservoir made out of a ferrous organic liquid with cells in it, these phenomenon are relatively rare and are referred to as "blood oceans".
Due to the run-down technology, scanners cannot penetrate the bio-readings and see what's underneath. That is where you come in.
You're a convict, your crime doesn't really matter. There's only one way they're going to punish you.
You and a few others are being sealed inside a submarine that's seen better days, an old rustbucket with an antiquated camera and map from the sonar readings as your only way of navigating these unknown depths. There's no time for training as you're packed in and the door welded shut. If you succeed in your mission, you'll apparently be released.
