Ethan liked to think he was of at least average intelligence. He wasn’t like Lilium or Beck, the two of them always competing for the top spot on the wall of whatever teacher that they were trying to kiss ass to that week. But he wasn’t someone who necessarily slacked off or coasted by either, pulling respectable grades that would get him into a respectable college and away from this fucking town, which apparently thought that loading up a coach bus full of its senior class and driving them to some other random fucking town, where there were grown-ass men and women dressed up in costume prancing around and prattling on in accents of varying degrees of grating, was some sort of treat.

Again— average intelligence here, which currently meant he was the smartest motherfucker in a ten mile radius, given the level of gumption that the rest of the student body had taken to the event, the majority of them dressed in costume as well, either hand-crafted or bought. There had been incessant chatter on the bus about how long it took them to sew this or that, how long it had taken to plait their hair in this way or that way, and Ethan had wanted to throttle all of them. He hadn’t bothered changing his general appearance for the trip, and the result of this was that he stuck out like a sore thumb amongst a sea of people who were playing dress-up and indulging one another in this mind-boggling fantasy. What the hell was the point of this all? Why couldn’t they have gone to an actual amusement park, one with adrenaline inducing rides and rage inducing games that were certainly rigged— there was that average intelligence kicking in again!

Well, the reason why he was currently stationed next to some man covered in soot and his own sweat, wearing sunglasses that clashed with the rest of his outfit was because of the irritating motherfucker known as the English teacher, who must have curried some favor with the Powers That Be in order to get them to agree a trip down to the middle-of-no-where with the entire class of seniors as some sort of educational field trip. Weren’t they too old to be shipped around on education trips, anyways? And what were they even being educated on in this situation, how hard it was to put together whatever sorts of gowns that some of his classmates had?

He wasn’t sulking because he was too old for that, but he was frowning deeply as he dug around in his pocket for his phone, giving an irritated huff when he realized that he still had no signal out here, and therefore couldn’t text Brooke to ask her where the fuck she was in an effort to get her to help distract him from his boredom.

Brooke had been looking forward to the trip for years.

No, it wasn’t an exaggeration. She’d been looking forward to it since the day she first heard about it, a year before high school started. Brooke, whose interests and attractions seemed to change not by the day but by the hour, had for years wanted to be on the trip.

Her dress was green, falling around her shoulders. Each bead had been hand-sewn on, details crafted to perfection. Flowy sleeves, a choice of a looser style of dress, a deep neckline, and gently curled hair pinned up with beaded flowers ensured Brooke looked good; not just historically accurate, but good by modern standards, too.

She did, after all, have a reputation to keep.

Brooke had called Beck’s phone until she answered that morning, much before either of them had needed to wake for school, and then again until she agreed to come to Brooke’s bedroom for them to get ready together. She’d made an outfit for Beck, too, which Brooke figured was a mutually beneficial agreement. She got to dress up her neighbor, who usually never let Brooke go into makeover mode over her, and Beck got the bonus credits from their history teacher with barely any effort in it.

Despite the early start of the day, by the time Brooke was satisfied not just with their outfits but with their hair and makeup and general preparation, Ethan was already in his car out front, threatening to leave without them.

She’d hugged them both after they all got out of the car, where yellow school buses were already lining the streets.

Brooke had slipped into her place: second row from the back, next to Gracelie, who wasn’t quite her best friend but was the person she sat next to every day at lunch and who she’d touch up makeup with between classes and trade advice with about dates and parties. Her dress was clearly bought, and about two centuries too recent, but all anyone would see is she looked stunning. Brooke settled in with a smile, her and the group around them chatting loudly the whole ride.

Even the air seemed to be buzzing, humming along. The orange leaves clinging to the trees shook with the wind, the crowd moved and danced and laughed. The autumn chill brushed against Brooke’s exposed skin; she didn’t so much as feel it. Brooke didn’t understand how anyone could be any less than buzzing, boiling over with the beauty and excitement, hearts full.

Brooke was practically skipping, arm in arm with one of the girls in the group around her as they walked down stone paths and peered at booths, until she caught sight of curly hair and a familiar dress just off the path.

The group at the archery targets was failing miserably; employees were helping participants learn to hold bows, only for arrows to miss their targets. Beck looked like a princess watching over her subjects- if a slightly judgemental one. Brooke came up behind her, bouncing up and down on the balls of her feet, and placed her hands on Beck’s shoulders.

“You haven’t torn the dress up yet,”
The words were cheerful, easy,
“Enjoying yourself? You could try the archery, I bet you’d show them all up!”
Brooke looked over the dress she’d constructed, considering the flexibility, or lack of, that she’d put into the sleeves, but brushed the thought aside. Wouldn’t it be worth it to have a bit of fun?

Brooke had been looking forward to the trip for years. She was going to make sure everyone under her watch enjoyed it.
