Haha. I figure that there would a person on the ship who is designated to determine if the aliens or what not are a threat to Earth. Said person would also have military training and make sure the crew stays safe. So maybe gun maybe not.

Yep security and defence would definitely be needed for a perilous journey such as this. You would also be needed if any of the crew went space-crazy.
