In between the reality as we know it (Ametsuchi, the Waking Realm) and the spiritual plane (Ukiyo, the Floating World) lies a thin border where Contracts, also known as, Spirit Binding, can be made between a Spirit and a Human of considerable spiritual gifts.
Such a contract allows the two to cross between realms. The very nature of their contract and abilities vary from person to person, ayakashi to ayakashi and contract to contract.
Once every hundred years, the Sakura Earth Tree (Chikyū ki) withers away to restart the circle of life. In its dwindling, it leaves behind a single Seed - the Ground Cherry Lantern - known to be able to grant any Human or Ayakashi a wish to those who find it. However, this Seed is not found in either realms but rather the plane between them.
In order to find this, an Ayakashi and a Human must work together before the Earth Tree completely withers into nothingness.
A/N: Ha-ha! Just when you think there couldn't possibly be any more Eastern Fantasy RPs, think again! This RP takes place in a fictional world of pre-modern Asia (closely resembled to Japan) where a multitude of spirits (also named Ayakashi or Yokai) in Asian mythology exist in the unseen dimension called Ukiyo.
Similar to real life, without having a Spirit Contract ordinary humans are unable to see spirits at all. Depending on their spirit wave-lengths, some may have higher spiritual powers than others. There are the super rare occasion where a human may be born with the ability to see spirits but that never really did them any good! (Take Reiko from Natsume Yuujinchou for example).
In this RP, you are able to join as an Ayakashi, a Human, or Both! (Max 2 characters per RP-er). You are not allowed to form a Spirit Bond with your own OC so form one with someone else's. If your HUMAN character does not have a Spirit Bond, he/she will not be able to see spirits or interact with the Floating World. Similarly, if your YOKAI character does not have a Spirit Bond, he/she will not be able to interfere or influence the Waking Realm. (Although there are exceptions where High-Class Spirits are able to take physical form in the Real World. e.g. Nyanko-sensei.)

SPIRIT BINDING COMPATBILITY
To attain a perfect binding, a Yokai's rank should fall align with a Human's Spiritual wavelength. A human with a low wavelength (weak spiritual power) should bond with a weaker Yokai; a high-rank Yokai should bond with a Human who has high spiritual power. If there is a power imbalance, the stronger being will "consume" the weaker's soul, reducing them to become Wasuremono* (soul-less beings which wander between planes until the fade out of existence completely).
SHI-GAI
Shi-gai are Tainted beings and are a different category from the Ayakashi. They linger as malicious auras in Ametsuchi and take on the form of darkened and violent Ayakashi in Ukiyo. It is an Onmyouji*'s job to exorcise Shi-gai and escort wandering or lost spirits back to Ukiyo. Onmyouji's also have the ability to 'set free' Wasuremonos.
ONMYOUJI
Also known as exorcists, priests or priestesses; these spiritualists are trained to deal with the Ayakashi. There are 11 well-known Onmyouji families throughout Ametsuchi. It is highly likely that your OC is from one of these 11 families: Tora, Miyamoto, Nishimura, Takahashi, Fujiwara, Zhang, Yeung, Han, Urushizaki, Shiga, and Muuro. (Because let's be real, no ordinary human would know how to properly spirit bind a Yokai. It's not something you can wiki-how.)
