October 12th, 2018. Hundreds are marching toward the school with heavy weaponry. "All student's are to report to the cafeteria immediately."

Blaring alarms, voices over the intercom. It was so overwhelming to the small girl who tried to make her way through a crowd of bodies. Her first year at the school had just begun, it wasn’t starting off the way she had hoped. Today was declared a state of emergency. An angry man at the train station downtown had caused a collapse with her powers, killing the current president’s daughter. She was an icon and beloved my so many people. A princess Diana of her own time. The announcement that was just released claimed many armed people and military officials were heading down to the school. The easiest target and the closest target for them to enact instant revenge. The girl managed to make her way through the large iron doors of the cafeteria. Some teachers were shouting names attempting to make sure every student was present and counted for.

“Rowena Inkswell?” An older woman whose wrinkles were deepened by today’s events read aloud from a list. The tiny girl raised her hand as tall as possible, being only 4’9 made it difficult for her to be noticed over the large crowd of people.

“I’m here!” Her meek voice screamed fighting over the volume of alarmed students. The older woman crossed her name off the list and continued. Rowena looked around, she didn’t see any familiar faces. She was on her way to her next class when the announcement was made and didn’t have time to meet up with friends. She removed a hair tie from her wrist and tied her long green hair into a knot on the top of her head. It made her seem slightly taller and hopefully more menacing.

Axus was amazed how quickly a normal day could turn to complete anarchy. Granted there was nothing normal about the situation he and his peers were in, but nevertheless. Word spread by word of mouth far faster than the announcements had come. When Axus overheard what had happened from the cryokinetic who sat next to him, he almost ratted it off as an over-embellished rumor. Nothing happened for a few minutes, until kids started looking out the window. The rooms on the East side where Axus was could see the gathering of a crowd of people. Angry people. They appeared to be held at bay by a police force, but what had everyone scared was that if one looked closely, one could see uniforms on either side of the confrontation. The staff were quick to respond as the intercoms came on directing everyone to the cafeteria. Order was in short supply as the cascade of frightened young people with powers in the halls made beach day traffic look ideal.

The panic didn't stop when people got to the mess hall. If anything it got worse. It took everything some kids had to keep their powers under control. The faculty could only run case by case panic control since they themselves didn't know what to do. Word was the headmaster was outside trying to quell the riot, but many believed he was working on the wrong crowd. Some semblance of structure was beginning to form as the kids separated into their year at Excalibur. Axus would find his way to the first year's section where, unfortunately, the panic was much harder to control. The trench coat wearer himself kept his composure, but did little to hid his facial expression of distress. Luckily, this area had the highest concentration of staff, out of necessity, so thing looked like they would simmer down.

An aged woman who was among the attendance takers called out "Axus Windico?" To which the young German raised his hand. The woman appeared not to see him. He tried waving his arm but to no avail. Just before she called out again, a voice from right next to Axus called out "He's here!" causing the teacher to look and check his name off the list. Axus knew who had covered for him before he even turned. Lars was perhaps every new kid's best friend. The fool went out of his way to make kids like Axus feel a little better about being at this school. Putting his arm down, Axus turned to hear his friend ask, "you good, man?" The best Axus could do was nod, but he understood. "I'm going to check on some people, don't get in trouble without me." and with that Axus watched his friend make his way through the crowd toward a girl with green hair.

Rowena clasped her hands together, everyone was so panicky. Her own emotions were going out of control, she hadn’t quite learned how to block other people’s thoughts and emotions from her head. She felt the world closing in on her, her chest felt like it would cave in at any moment. She saw Lars running about, he was always nice to her. He seemed to be checking up on everyone.

The teachers had most of their head count finished, they began to swarm around each other discussing the next phase of action. Rowena was able to pick up several words in her mind.

“Evacuation. Death. Fire.” This made her heart race faster. She looked around the room, many first years were crying. A large beam of ice came shooting from the heart of the crowd, a young man gasped and immediately started apologizing. Two teachers consoled him, it was hard to handle all this. Rowena waved at Lars and attempted a halfhearted smile toward him.

“Hi, Lars. What’s the go?” She asked him, her violet eyes screamed panic!

Ever the vigilant friend, Lars was quick to recognize the green haired girl's distress. Anyone would agree distress was justified, but that didn't make it good. In response to her incoherent question, he lightheartedly responded, "great question, I'll get back to you." He took a quick glance around, assessing their surroundings. Without wasting a second, he turns back to Rowena, subtlety bending his knee so eye contact was easier, and speaks in a declarative tone. "Hey, remember what we practiced, breath in, think of a kitten, breath out." He seemed so composed, but the telepaths in the room could tell it was a front so he could look after others. That said, he couldn't stay with one person for too long. So, thinking quickly, he says, "see that funny looking guy in the Trench Coat? His name is Axus. I want you to focus on him. He's a tank under pressure." He begins to backpedal slowly but keeps talking. "I gotta check on the twins, focus on Axus." With that he was gone, but with luck his advice remained.

True to Lars' intention, Axus was holding his mental composure. Sure there was the fear and panic of the situation, but Axus did not focus on that. Instead, he forced the mental image of a man above all the negatives. The man looked a lot like Axus himself, even wearing the same coat, but the image was older and had darker hair. Many words accompanied the image, but most definitive of them was "uncle". The image was held in the highest regard and even as a mental construct overpowered the distress and calmed Axus. Lars had known about it, and his hope was to calm Rowena's nerves with Axus' coping mechanism.

Rowena’s eyes fixated on the stranger in the overcoat. She could tell he was one of the more stable people in that room. She hadn’t seen this Axus man before. What she couldn’t tell was his demeanor. Was he kind? Was he rough? She tilted her head, trying to get a better reading off him. Lars said he was cool, so he must be. Still, through the mess of people, getting any sort of reading would be nearly impossible. She was so lost in her own head, she hadn’t realized she had walked right up to the stranger. This was a common problem she had yet to deal with. When she snapped out of it, she was embarrassed.

“Sorry.” Was all she could mutter up. A large blast hit the school’s walls. Sounded like a gun shot. Rowena and several others ducked down in fear. The teachers ran to the window. A lone rogue had gotten inside the police barricade, he was running toward the school and shooting. The teachers ushered the student’s behind them. A large hole appeared in the ground, enveloping the lone gunman. He wasn’t hurt, just detained for now. An elemental of Earth power was able to capture him, most likely a teacher. The headmaster was still outside, Rowena began to fear for his safety now. She could feel the purge hulk rage that the normal were sending off.
