Prologue

"Dr. Takumi, it is such an honor to have you sitting here today."

The live reporter was beaming with excitement as she turned to face the elderly man who sat in the chair adjacent to hers. Both of them were on the exclusive stage reserved for the special guests of the 28th Fall Game Showcase. Down on the general audience floor, the crowd erupted into cheers, some even opting to stand in ovation for the elderly man who waved their way. Unlike most of the other guests who arrived in neat business casual fashion, the man in question was dressed in a pair of weathered jeans, a tattered lab coat, and a casual black t-shirt with a generic logo plastered across it. His physical appearance, notably his messy shoulder length hair and wispy goatee, was also incredibly unkempt, while the deep bags under his eyes were enough to make anyone question if he had seen any sleep in the last year. Nonetheless, everyone in the audience continued their enthusiastic applause, up until they were silenced by the reporter's start to the interview.

"Once again, I must express what an absolute honor it is having you here today. I cannot even imagine how busy you and your team have been preparing for today's reveal, but I think I can speak on the behalf of all of us, that we are fucking excited to finally see what the years of patient waiting has had in store for us." With that, the reporter turned to face the audience to whom she bellowed a booming "Am I right?" through the mic. Immediately, cheers even louder than before filled the surrounding air and lasted for a full minute before they finally began to die back down.

Back on the stage, Dr. Takumi began to chuckle in response to the enthusiasm of the crowd. He used his right hand to flip several loose stands of his grey, wavy hair out of his eyes before beginning his response to the reporter. "Ah, but you give me much more praise than I deserve." The man had a notably thick, foreign accent that was standout compared to the usual accents from around the world. No one knew the man's true origins outside of his sudden appearance as lead developer and founder of the eccentric American tech company, Realm Industries. "But yes, it has been quite a chaotic year for Realm. After nearly a decade of trial and error, numerous failures, and near bankruptcy, we are finally able to show you the first, true technological advancement of the 21th century. Without further ado, let me welcome you to the future of technology and the future of modern gaming."

Dr. Takumi fell silent and immediately the screen behind him came to life. In an unbelievably realistic render, four lab-attired individuals were standing on a rather overgrown street that resembled none other than the very downtown district of Blue Springs. Similar to the condition of the street, the surrounding buildings and skyscrapers were also run down and overgrown by peculiar vegetation, but the most notable element in the stream were the creatures that stood in opposition to the lab members. Three mutated dog-like monsters with darkened, leathery skin and numerous red eyes covering the length of their bodies were busy growling at the lab members who immediately began their preparations for battle. One of the members immediately tapped a bracelet on his wrist, summoning a great-sword into his hands. With a powerful leap, he came crashing down in front of the monsters and with a bellowing roar attracted their attention onto himself. At his rear, the other three members also joined the combat with one of them firing a volley of arrows, another vanishing into the shadows, and the last casting a series of buffs through the staff in her hands.

On the screen, the visceral combat raged on, all while the audience stared in utter, silent awe--at least until the stream came to a sudden end and triggered vocal protests across the wave of viewers. Even the reporter joined in on protesting the premature end to the stream, though like the crowd, she too fell silent once the doctor began to act. A wide grin was plastered on his face as he rose from his chair and walked towards the edge of the stage. There, he began to speak in a booming tone while his arms stretched outwards towards the crowd.

"You must forgive me for ruining your fun, but I only intended to give but a taste of what is to come." Again, protests, albeit quieter ones, spread amongst the crowd, but the doctor remained unperturbed as he continued his announcement. "Everything you saw was live footage of actual gameplay, and yes, those testers were in fact standing in the game world, fighting against those monsters." Immediately the crowd fell silent as they began contemplating the meanings of his words.

"How is this possible you may ask? Well, again I only planned to give you but a taste of what is to come, but that isn't to say there aren't any opportunities to experience more. Starting now, an application has opened up on my company's website. For the next twenty four hours, anyone may apply to be a beta tester for my game. Once the applications are closed, there will be no further opportunities until later notice." Frantic shuffling began to occur throughout the crowd as everyone member of the audience reached for their phones and began furiously typing the address to Realm Industries. The grin on the doctor's face only grew as he watched the commotion occur.

"Only a handful of you will be chosen to participate. To all of you I wish you luck, but for some of you, I soon welcome you into the world of ICE."

Roleplay Expectations

  • Classes, quests, skills, items and other elements found in games and the litrpg genre.
  • A flexible plotline that will adapt to the decisions made by the players.
  • A story that blends litrpg, supernatural, and urban fantasy elements.
  • Challenging scenarios that will help you grow your character's identities, define their moral compass, and potentially meet/brush up against death.

Rules & Player Expectations

  1. Please be capable of writing at least two medium seized paragraphs per post. The more the merrier, but it is not required passed the baseline.
  2. Be capable of posting at least twice a week. This roleplay will often have multiple players working on a similar quest/plotline. Frequent lapses in posts will cause delays and hang-ups in moving the story forward. Naturally, life takes precedence over anything else, so just communicate in the OOC to anyone involved with your character if you will be absent for a bit!
  3. All rules of RPN apply.
  4. Please be respectful of all players.
  5. No god-modding or manipulating other player characters without their explicit permission.
  6. This rule applies only if you plan on joining the roleplay. But please do not assign yourself a class in your character sheet. Classes will be assigned during the opening sequence of the roleplay. Nonetheless, I am definitely open to suggestions if you have an idea for your character.

Blue Springs

Blue Springs is the ever-growing metropolis found in the upper Midwest region of North America. What started as nothing but a dense forest gradually became one of the most technology-oriented cities in the world. Blue Springs is globally known for its extraordinary infrastructure supported through the cutting edge research that many of its corporations produce. It is a shining city of boundless opportunity--at least for those who are capable of forging their own path into the circles of the elite, industrious minds or rich enough to buy their way in as investors of the future. Blue Springs suffers from clear financial segregation amongst its population. Only the brilliant and rich thrive in Blue Springs, leaving a majority of its citizens either bordering the line of comfortable living or struggling to make ends meet.

The metropolis is divided into three distinct segments--the upper outer circle, the lower outer circle, and the core of the city where the downtown district resides. The upper circle primarily consists of higher income suburbs that house the better off population of the city. Circling around to the lower circle, however, is where a majority of the citizens live. The lower circle is a chaotic construction of research facilities, production, infrastructure, suburbs, and slums--all fighting for the limited space defined by the metropolis' limits. Similar to many other cities, the downtown district primarily consists of business offices, government buildings, and some tourism-based infrastructure such as arenas or historic malls.

Realm Industries

Realm Industries is a peculiar company that popped up out of nowhere nearly a decade ago. It's founder, Dr. Takumi is an enigmatic individual whose full name and historic identity are both unknown to the general public. It is marketed as a tech-focused company; however, over the years it has delved in several other additional markets such as medicine, finance, and recently, the gaming industry. With its promise to produce the next-generation of RPG experiences, Realm Industries has been a controversial topic due to the lack of concrete evidence backing its bold claims. It wasn't until the 28th Fall Game Showcase that its proclamations came true, when it presented footage from the MMORPG, World of ICE.

Gamers and non gamers across the world fervently await the selection of beta testers in hopes of experiencing what seems to be the first immersive, virtual world.

ICE: Game Manual

Welcome to the World of ICE--the world's first interactive RPG experience where you are given full control over your destiny and the fate of the world which surrounds you. In this game, choices matter. The decisions you and your peers make will have lasting effects on the game world and will contribute to the development of your unique character identity. There is no one way to enjoy ICE. Play solo or venture with others as you work to unravel the mystery of the Corrupted Realms. Across your journey, you will unlock unique growth classes, find and develop stunning character skills, and of course, discover rare loot for your characters to enjoy.

Note: For the duration of the Beta Test, players will be limited to the tutorial zone. Rest assured, however, in knowing that there will be more than enough content and progression available for the entirety of the test period.

The Corrupted Realms

Many, many centuries ago, there was a realm that existed far beyond the reaches of mortal hands. It was known only through the prayers of a select few who by chance, managed to pique the interest of the Ascended. Compared to the mortals, these Ascended were deity-like entities capable of bestowing blessings that would enhance the natural talents of their champions with supernatural abilities. To the Ascended, the bestowing of these powers was nothing more than the start to a cruel game. In their eyes, mortals were nothing but pawns to be manipulated at their whims. The price for their power was devotion to themselves and an enactment of their will--a combination which would soon plunge the mortal realm into utter chaos.

Ascended powers were far beyond the limits of the average mortal potential, and many were soon consumed by the blessings given to them. Those who were lucky remained of sound mind and continued to pompously enact the will of their Ascended; whereas, those less fortunate became corrupted by the power and their bodies mutated into foul beasts that began to stalk the land. Either scenario left the mortal realm wrought with havoc, as more and more mortals turned to the Ascended as a means to survive the cruel fate dealt to them.

Unbeknownst to the Ascended, however, were the side-effects of tampering with the mortal realm. It was a gradually effect that remained unnoticed until it was far too late to reverse the damage that had been wrought upon their own Realm. Like the mortals, the Ascended were no more resilient to the growing corruption of their followers, and soon found themselves mutating into similarly foul creations which eventually would become known as The Fallen.

Realizing that there was no way to reverse their mistakes, the Ascended formulated a plan to curb the spread of corruption. Together, they used their powers to merge the Ascended and mortal realms, before enacting a system which would help restore balance to those within. The System, existing as a combination of all Ascended power, became a highly intelligent entity capable of governing the distribution and management of powers amongst the masses of mortals. With the system in play, the risk of mortal and Ascended corruptions were mitigated, allowing for the commencement of the gradual reclamation of corrupted land.

Even to this day, the war against the Fallen rages on; however, humanity has once again found some level of stability through pockets of civilization that remain unravaged by the conflict. Nonetheless, as humanity grows stronger, so does the corruption, and it is at this point the System has reached beyond the Ascended-Mortal realm to find further champions to help thwart the forces of evil.

Tattered Springs

Tattered Springs is the starting location for all players participating in the beta. It will be the only location available for the duration of the test period; however, it's sheer size should provide more than enough content and progression for all players. Many of you will find that Tattered Springs takes heavy inspiration from the real-life city. This is done on purpose as a means to provide a more familiar environment as you learn to utilize the systems of ICE. As this is a beta-test environment, some areas may be incomplete or contain bugs that may limit gameplay. Your feedback and reports will help improve the overall experience over the course of the test period.

The Stat System

[OOC: For the purpose for the roleplay, stats will not play a significant role outside of scoping power and determining eligible class progressions/loot usage. This is not a Dice-based roleplay. Instead, we will use stats to better understand the power levels between characters, monsters, and bosses. As a baseline, 5 points is equivalent to an average human individual in regards to strength, constitution, etc. ]

In ICE, stats will be initially defined by your chosen starting class. Leveling up will provide you with 5 points to allocate however you wish. Please be aware that there is currently no way to reset your stats in game. Once allocated, you will not be able to change your points.

Here are the following stats in ICE:

Constitution (CON)Leveling your constitution will improve your total health, increase your regeneration, and provide additional stats to your defense and magical resistances.
Strength (STR)Leveling strength will increase your overall strength and capability with physical-based weapons and skills.
Dexterity (DEX)Leveling dexterity will increase your character's critical rate, and finesse with dex-based weapons and skills.
Agility (AGI)Leveling agility will increase your speed, dodge proficiency, and overall stamina.
Intellect (INT)Leveling intellect will improve your perception and insight about the mystics arts of the Shattered Realms. This in turn will improve your ability to sustain and manipulate the ambient mana which exists in the realms. Over-exerting past the limits of your mana capabilities will leave you in a sickened state.

Classes

In ICE, unique classes are something players must work to achieve through progression, quests, and exploration of the world. As such, all players will be given a starting class from the following list of classes. Each class with come with a pre-defined stat distribution, but players are free to allocate future points however they wish. To start, each class will have two pre-defined skills.

Defender

The Defender is the bulwark of any party. Blessed with high base constitution, the defender is capable of dawning the front lines and controlling the battle through survivability. Although their raw damage is lower than more combative oriented builds, defenders are more than capable of holding their own by simply outlasting the opposition. Outside of their constitution, Defenders are given a fairly well rounded spread, allowing them significant flexibility in their combative style.

Base Stats
CONSTRDEXAGIINT
116535

Starter Skills
PhysiqueStrength your body's core, reducing all physical damage by small amount and all magical damage by a miniscule amount for a short period of time.
PeltPelt the target with the nearest projectile and draw their attention your way.
Fighter

The Fighter, like the defender, prefers the front lines, but rather than become the bulwark of a party, prefers to deal raw physical damage to the opposition. The Fighter is primarily a strength based class with equal distribution between constitution and agility, allowing for tank-base or agility-based combat styles.

Base Stats
CONSTRDEXAGIINT
612363

Starter Skills
Fighter's SpiritBolster your fighting spirit. Raise all physical damage dealt by a small amount for a short period of time.
Power AttackEmpower your weapon and deal small amount of additional damage on the next strike.
Scout

The Scout is a unique class given its capability of both melee and ranged combat styles. The Scout is a dexterity and agility based class, utilizing stealth or range to keep damage at a minimum. While the Scout lacks constitution and strength, it has a minor affinity for intellect, potentially allowing a player to utilize mana to bolster its attacks or survivability

Base Stats
CONSTRDEXAGIINT

Starter Skills
Weak SpotSpend time searching for a weak spot on the target. Increase the critical chance of your next strike by a significant amount.
SneakBlend in with the environment, making it slightly harder for others to detect your current position. Skill does not work if there is nothing to hide amongst.
Acolyte

The Acolyte is reserved for players with an adequate level of mana sensitivity. Because of the realm merge, Ascended mana was infused into the very atmosphere of the world. Acolytes are capable of sensing this mana and bending it their will. Low level Acolytes will be limited to sensing only basic mana; however, as they grow, the various elements of the world will become increasingly more discernable--some of which may be more or less compatible with the Acolyte themself.

Base Stats
CON STR DEX AGI INT
4 5 4 5 12

Starter Skills
Sense Ambient Mana: Beginner As an Acolyte, you are capable of sensing basic ambient mana in the surrounding air. This is a growth skill that will improve over time. Improving this skill will unlock mana of higher complexity.
Mana Manipulation: Beginner Draw basic ambient mana towards yourself and manipulate into basic shapes for general and combative purposes.

Skills

In ICE, skills must be earned rather than given to the player on level up. More often than not, simple performing the action, which defines the skill, enough times is enough to trigger a skill unlock. For example, a player who utilizes a sword for a quality amount of time will be rewarded with the Sword Mastery: Basic skill.

Other skills may be found as rewards or achievements while progressing through the game. These skills often have class or stat requirements and can be gifted to other players.

FAQ

How does Mana work in ICE?

All Players are given a mana capacity based on their INT stat. Unlike other games, mana in this game is accumulated for every spell cast. The accumulation passively decreases over time, based on your Mana Degeneration. Accumulating more mana than your capacity allows will inflict debilitating effects on your character--their intensity increasing by the amount you over cap. Debilitating effects general start with headaches and nausea and will continued to worsen until you reach death.

To use Spells, all mana-based classes have a passive ability known as Mana Sense. Ambient Mana exists almost everyone in ICE. Those with Mana Sense can detect this mana and draw it into their body for use. Those with higher level Mana Senses can detect individual types of mana in the general ambient mana pool. Different players will have different affinities for mana types.
