Realm Industries: Core Facility - Restricted Access Wing
1:48 am
May 31st, 3032

"Of all the times."

A middle aged man, showing signs of nervous fatigue, was hastily jogging through the restricted access wing. Had the incident waited twelve more minutes, it would have been his replacement's job to deliver the news, yet here he was, stuck with the responsibility of facing the boss on the eve of the launch. His mind was racing with potential angles that might soften the blunt of his announcement, but ultimately, nothing came to mind other than an urge to yawn. Beads of sweat began to well on his forehead as he finally arrived at his boss' door. In front of him was a thick sheet of sliding steel which required an additional set of access requirements that only the highest leveled engineers were granted. Might as well get this over with, he concluded before reaching for the hand authentication scanner on the adjacent wall.

"Aldrich is not here right now, Viktor."

The man known as Viktor froze in place. His eyes were focused on the scanner which had spoken to him in a unnervingly familiar tone. Viktor's mind once again began to race. The voice he had heard; it wasn't possible for her to be speaking to him in such a manner, yet he was certain that it had been her. "I-I see." He stammered, unsure of what to entirely say. "I-I have an update concerning the launch of the beta test."

"I am already aware of the data breach occurring at the Access Point C. After analyzing the situation, I have determined that the incident is a non-issue in regards to the launch of the beta test. I have isolated ten participants who will be routed through the underground network portal to Access Point C. There is a 94.6 percent success rate with only a 7 percent mort--..." The feminine voice gave a sudden pause, leaving only silence in the air. Several seconds went by this way, until she once again began speaking. "My apologies, Viktor, it seems your access level does not leave you privy to any further details on this manner. Consider it resolved, and please have a good day."

Once again, silence filled the air and gave no comfort to the man who remained frozen in place. Suddenly, his fatigue was gone. What the fuck is happening...

The Flight to Blue Springs
Varied times
May 31st, 3032

Seven long months had passed since ICE had been announced to the world--months in which there had been next to no communication with anyone but the fifty selected participants. Apart from the promised footage of a minute-long gameplay sequence, Realm Industries had gone off the grid in preparation for the beta. Even those who had been selected to participate had received minimal communications apart from a chain of automated emails confirming their participation, required documents, acknowledgement of the beta's terms and conditions, and acceptance of the non-disclosure agreement--the latter of which even included not revealing one's position as a tester. It was needless to say that on the day of the beta, the entire tech and gaming communities were fervently awaiting any official or leaked content to be streamed.

From the tester's perspective, however, life couldn't have gotten any better. Not only were they mere hours away from experiencing the world's most anticipated game; they had also been gifted a first class experience to boot. For most testers, personal chauffeurs had been waiting at their homes in order to deliver them to the appropriate airports. There, private flights had been booked in their name, leaving only the tedium of airport security as a barrier to departure. While this experience might have seemed like total overkill to the participants, it was an important detail in ensuring each wave of testers arrived in Blue Springs at a relatively similar time.

Without a doubt, the flight was a luxurious experience, complete with high-quality meals, beverages, and alcohol; however, the biggest surprise was the gift provided by the stewardess on entry into the plane. It was a box that had come with simple instructions--get comfortable, open and enjoy the contents. Inside, were three devices. On top was a laptop labeled "start here" by a sticky note, while underneath was a white smartwatch-like bracelet, the very same that had been showcased in the gameplay trailer, and a peculiar white headpiece of sorts.

The moment the laptop was opened a middle aged man appeared on screen with an excessively tired expression on his face. "Hello tester..." He began, only to pause for an abnormally large yawn. "Congratulations on your acceptance into the very first ICE beta test. You are one of the lucky hundred candidates who were chosen from a pool of literal millions...." Once again, he paused for yet another excessively large yawn. "My name is Viktor, the lead development architect for the ICE project. I'm pleased to announce that this laptop contains a brief guide explaining the hardware, lore and systems surrounding ICE. Use the time on this flight to familiarize yourself with the game so that can enjoy a smooth start to the beta. Please be aware that any devices connected to the laptop will be unable to access the local file system. This is a measure put in place to prevent any of this information from leaking to the public. As a tester who has signed the non-disclosure agreement, please make sure that all knowledge and experiences about ICE remain confidential."

Viktor disappeared from the screen, his recording replaced by a spinning 3D model of the bracelet. His voice continued. "This is the User Interface Controller. Like any watch, please fasten it to the wrist of your choosing, ensuring that the band is as tight as comfortably possible. Not only will the controller act as a biometric monitor for your health and safety, it will also control all in-game user interface elements and other features such as voice communication. Next..." The watch vanished from the screen, this time replaced by a 3D model of the head piece. "...we have the Artificial Reality Renderer. As its name suggests, it is the hardware responsible for rendering the game world if you are within the confines of an ICE access point. Simply place the device around your ears, allowing for the band to wrap around the back of your head."

Once again, Viktor returned to the screen; however, this time, he was wearing both the controller and renderer as a means to demonstrate its proper application. "To prevent misplacement of these devices, please affix them to your body now. You will find that they are quite comfortable to wear, even after long periods of time. After this presentation, you will have access to several documents outlining the lore and in-game systems that I mentioned before. At a later date, either myself or one of my colleagues will be interviewing each of you about your experiences with the game. Until then, I hope you have a great trip, and above all else, I welcome you to the World of ICE."

The recording came to a close, and as promised was a replaced by a series of accessible documents that outlined detailed information about the game. Whether or not the participant wished to read it was up to them; however, due to information security reasons, it was ultimately the only entertainment available for the remainder of the trip.

Blue Springs: International Airport
1:00 PM, give or take a few minutes.
May 31st, 3032

With neither customs nor baggage claim being a necessity, the arrival process for each tester was incredibly simplified. The time it took to exit the plane and reach the guide waiting for them in airport lobby was in a matter of minutes--a truly unheard of experience at any international airport.

"Welcome to Blue Springs." Every guide would have begun to say. "Rest assured that your luggage will be delivered to your shared-housing residence in its entirety, barring any incidents outside of our control. Originally, I was supposed to escort you to your residence as well; however, due to a unforeseen sever error we are currently very behind on registrations. I do apologize, but we must be on our way to the main facility to get you registered into ICE. There are a large number of players arriving in a short window of time, and only so many technical assistants." Once again, every guide would have dawned a similarly apologetic expression after explaining the situation. "Once again, I do apologize, but for now, if you would please follow me. There is a private subway line connecting the airport to Realm. It is the fastest way to arrive."

As promised, there was in fact a private subway tunnel located adjacent to the public system. It was accessible through an authorized-personal only entrance that existed prior to the subway's ticketing gates, and inevitably led into a rather luxurious waiting platform. Once arrived, the guide would have given a small goodbye before returning to the airport's lobby in preparation for the next arrival. Marble tiles lined the freshly waxed floor, while each of the walls were covered in a cohesive mural that depicted a scene from ICE's gameplay trailer--the four players in horizontal combat against one of the red-eyed dog monsters. To add to the luxury, a sleek custom subway with only two cars waited for their soon-to-be departure.

"Welcome to Realm's Private line." Yet another guide would have said upon any new arrival. "Please make your way into any of the two cars. Once inside, feel free to choose any seat and enjoy any of our complementary beverages and snacks. Once settled, please ensure that your controller and renderer are affixed to your body, prior to the train's departure. The train is equipped with an generalized calibration Access Point and will serve as your first experience in Artificial Reality. Other than that, mingle with the others and enjoy your trip."

This was new.

Luxury, that was. Even without any prior experience, he could tell that airplanes and airports weren’t meant to be such a pleasant experience. But as for how enjoyable all those pleasantries were, from free alcohol to lavish meals to fancy electronics that almost sent him comatose from the sheer amount of documents to be read from them…

Arlo found it somewhat wanting. After all, a private plane was much too quiet, and the stewardesses were much too professional. The man on the video looked as if he hadn’t slept in a month, while the Japanese dub was deliriously excited. Ah, and most importantly? The devices that he was to wear on his body were lame as hell. Literally grounds to get kicked out if he showed up to a club with it on.

Ah, if only the windows weren’t so small.

Ah, if only he could enter the pilots’ cabin.

Indeed, travel was a pleasant thing. But in the liminal space between one’s point of entry and one’s point of exit, he simply felt trapped, and that sensation of imprisonment only became stronger when the plane touched ground, when another guide performed another rehearsal, each word memorized and practiced until they had become banal. It was a. escalator. An escalator that stretched from Japan to America, leading him down into a tunnel, where more luxuries persisted in enclosed spaces.

“Ah, thank you very much, guy,” Arlo said, nodding at the guy-guide, before he stepped in. His eyes flicked around, in search for a sign, but failed to see it. Good. Some relief could be found, at least. The lanky man made a bee-line for the mini-fridge, pulling out a tall can of something that was probably beer, before then twisting his body around and summarily flopping onto one of the many couches available. It felt like one of those days, after all. He hadn’t gotten any sleep since he left.

A finger hooked the tab and popped open the can, while his free hand fumbled for his smokes and lighter, catching the cigarette between his teeth as a blue flame ignited his vices. Soon enough, smoke rose and with it, his mood.

Quite a couple of cuties, for a selection of hikkis, huh? More surprisingly though, were the number of dandies in the train car, a real duo of fellows who looked like they’d fit right in with a mansion and an army of plain-faced maids. Which, upon reflection, would mean that they fit these circumstances more than he did.

“Huh.”

Another draw of the cigarette. Tapped the ashes off onto the coffee table. Took a sip from his can, enjoyed the light buzz in his brain.

Don't mind, don't mind. If they were going to be housemates, then he could simply take his time, getting to know each and every one of them. And as for who to start with...hm, bubblegum girl? Or tattoo-throat dude?

Sharon Weiss
location: airport

Sharon wasn't much of a traveler, and in fact, this was the first time she ever went out of her country so she had a mix of nervousness and excitement bubbling inside her. She's happy that she didn't seems to have problem communicating in english, all those time flaming random kids on Colleagues of Champions had been beneficial, although she did have some accent that immediately tell her that she's not a native speaker.

Her experience with the trip to Blue Spring was rather awkward as she stumbles around trying to keep up with the staffs' instructions while sating her curiousity by touching everything she saw. At one point she thought she must looks like a country bumpkin to the other people, even though she's a 100% city dweller who just spent too much time inside her home. During the flight she spent a third of her time reading the documents, then spent the rest sleeping with the devices still attached. She suddenly didn't feels too good and hoped some sleep can fix it, unfortunately when she arrived at her destination the mild throbbing had became even more powerful. There goes her plan of mingling with the others and making a good first impression.

Mother, your drugs didn't work. Sharon mumbled to herself in arabic before she popped a few pills into her mouth and crawled into one of the car. then slumped into the rearmost seat and started massaging her temples. At least now she coud say that she had experienced jetlag once in her lifetime.

"Mingle with the others and enjoy your trip."

Easier said than done. Marie let out an affected sigh as she gazed out the window at the scenery that was racing by. Despite her right-handedness, the bracelet sat snugly there on her right wrist, just where a watch might be. A little habit of hers. The headset, similarly, sat on the back of her head, unaffected in any case by the pair of glasses that sat clipped into the neck of the beige cardigan that wrapped over the shoulders of the floral print dress she had on. She felt a little out of place. Most of the other testers seemed to be the kind that played well on camera.

A rather distinguished-looking, older fellow (was he into games?). A studious-looking man. Several younger folk, not too far out of their teens and certainly likely to look less strange playing a fancy new VR game.

Ugh. Maybe she should have put on that dress shirt and slacks instead, looked more presentable and less of a tourist. It'd been a while since she'd left the house for an occasion like this. Or left the house at all.

But here she was, on the way to some (temporary) new digs and a pretty generous stipend. She'd definitely have something to write about if she ever revived her old blog.

And so she may as well make the best of it. Opening one of the minifridges, she availed herself of a can of soda, which she promptly cracked open.

As she scanned the train car for a comfy, out of the way seat, the young man sprawled back with a cigarette in his mouth caught her eye. Oh. Surprisingly, no one (or nothing) moved to stop him. She supposed that meant smoking was...allowed? He must be nervous, anyway. Tired from the jet lag, too...

With that, she took a seat opposite him.

"H-hey there. Nervous?" She clasped her hands together. "I know I am. Wouldn't have even thought to sign up for this by myself...I guess we can just think of this as a paid vacation, huh?"

__hatsune_miku_vocaloid_and_1_more_drawn_by_takanashi_kei_hitsujikan__9b190351e3f0c856a16f03c8...jpgWell this was nightmare. Tae had to figure out something her life was on the internet and now she was going to have to go completely silent. She happy as hell she was a beta tester but ugh she wished she could actually tell people. Talk about lame. Well eventually she did come up with and idea. "Hi guys! Welcome to the stream glad to see all my little cherry blossoms here." She said sweetly and excitedly. "Now before we begin I want thank you for all the nice comments you guys left on me on Instagram guys it means a lot. Now for everyone who doesn't know what's going on I'm....going offline for while. I really need a break from the internet you know, for my mental health. Now before you guys freak out, don't worry I'm totally fine I just need a break. I don't know how long it will be but I hope you guys can patiently wait for me." Tae clasp her hands together. "Now no more about that. Let's check the poll and see what game you guys voted on for today." The needing a mental health break from the internet was perfect. Everyone bought it and now all she had to do was do some shopping and pack.

Tae had to admit she wasn't expecting the first class treatment she got. Not that she wasn't use to it because...she totally was but she hadn't expected them to go all out. She totally approved. When she had arrived to the plane the stewardess had given her a gift. It was a box it had instructions and three devices inside, one being a laptop. After watching the instruction video, with very tired man on it who had the look of, 'I'm not getting paid enough for this', was done she decided she would read the documents. She managed to get through all the lore but then she ended up dozing off.

Tae was now standing in front of a train that was to take her and the others to their destination. Tae wasn't totally listening to the guide. Her mind was distracted by the annoying fact she had to keep this damn thing on her head. Like seriously was it really that big of a deal? After the guide was done saying her lines Tae went on in and took a look around. "Nice." Tae said to herself. Tae sat down one of the couches glanced at everyone. She noticed the one who was smoking, gross, glancing her way. She looked him up and down then glanced at the other boys again. Tae had to admit she was not expecting so many attractive guys be here. Tae's mind soon drifted after that thought and her hand started fiddling with her heart necklace. She turned to the side to stare out the window as she continued be lost in her thoughts.

The day had finally come, a long wait, but one which was well worth it. Jay could feel it; there was an intensity in the air that seemed to encompass the entirety of Blue Springs. ICE was about to launch its first beta test for people outside of Realm Industries. Even if he seemed calm, even if he seemed cool and collected, Jay was anything but. He had waited months for a new gaming experience, a new experience in general, and it had finally arrived in the form of this beta test. He could hardly contain his excitement. Opening the laptop, Jay was assaulted by a man named Viktor appearing within his vision. Blinking at the suddenness of the video's playback, he sat dumbfounded for more than a few seconds. Looking to the other two devices, Jay followed the instructions as he watched, fastening the watch-like piece to his wrist and the 'Artificial Reality Renderer' on his head as instructed. Making sure everything was firmly in place and without risk of accidently coming off or being lost, Jay leaned back into his seat, eyes dully skimming the game detail documents. Hopefully the flight wouldn't last much longer. All he wanted to do was game.

* * * * *
Landing time hadn't come quick enough. The excitement of being able to beta test ICE prevented him from doing anything else except theorize and fantasize about what could be and what would be. He was a jittery and unfocused as he wheeled himself after towards the lobby to meet with his guide. Getting off the plan was a tad bit of a hassle, as trying to maneuver a wheelchair off a private jet often was. His eyes scanned around the airport taking in the almost entirely empty building before him. Unlike his other airport experiences where there would be other flight passengers, fans, managers, and his fellow teammates, as well as having to go through baggage claim and security, this was all fairly nice. Seeing what he assumed to be his guide, Jay would just blindly nod at every word that came out of their mouth, understanding and blind acceptance in his eyes. Surely the system they would have put in place for tester arrival would be more efficient, but who was he to judge? "Oh... a private subway?" he mumbled to himself hearing that little tidbit. "That's neat..." Once more, he just wheeled himself after the guide. He wondered if he would meet any other testers before he'd get to the main facility...

Now at the subway station alone with his thoughts, Jay simply shut his eyes to enjoy the quiet while it lasted. Once he got into the game, he knew he wasn't going to log off too often. He wondered if... if he would regain the use of his legs. That was a huge motivator in applying, in vying to become a beta tester. Would he be able to walk, run again, even if it was a virtual world?

Watching the arrivals from where he sat, Jay just observed. He didn't really focus on interaction too much. If people wanted to speak with him, they could make the first move. Some people seemed like they belonged in a breakthrough game beta test, and others... well they seemed far too out of depth for this sort of thing. "Eh is that...?" he muttered to himself reognizing famed streamer and social media influencer Tae Sakura. "Guess she made it in as well." Lost in his thoughts, Jay watched as the subway pulled into the station and the doors opened. Following the rest of the testers onto the subway, Jay wheeled himself on with practiced ease, avoiding getting stuck between the platform and the train door. Finding a rather nice sized space to park himself, Jay simply sat and observed. I mean, nobody would recognize him here, surely?

Ange Sheppard
Location: Realm's private subway
Mentions: animegirl20 animegirl20

It was at times like this that Ange felt closer to a vampire than to a human, and for what it is worth, she did look the part. With alabaster skin, and frames of heavy, wet lashes shading large and absent eyes, one may even assume a vampire would look more lively. As she descended from the plane and the sunlight stung her delicate undead eyes, it briefly crossed her mind that perhaps she should turn back. Indeed, no one would notice her absence amidst the terminal chaos. Were she stealthy enough, she could even stake out a toilet cubicle seat to perch upon, and wait for the day's departures to pass in hiding. Wide-eyed and silent, like a lace-clad gargoyle. But It was a harrowing image, and she dismissed it immediately. No, she must let her excitement displace fear. Today, there just so happened to be an abundance of both, and she could barely stifle it.

As flushed cheeks cooled, her ears pricked to the gentle but authoritative tone of the guide. "...Once again, I do apologize, but for now, if you would please follow me…" With a diminutive tilt of her head, Ange's footsteps trailed behind theirs. The rhythmic clicking of heels against blanched marble soothed her mind back to a manageable, soft static. An exhale escaped her. The passage was unnervingly new and sterile - and upon reflection, the whole journey had been. Without the familiar grey skid marks of suitcases, or the pilling of a tattered passenger seat. The warmth of sentimentality softened her features, what a strange experience this all was. Luck seemed so kind to bring her here, and here she was quite ready to throw it all away. Fate surely has something planned, something good will surely come from all of this, it's fated, it shouldn't be fought, it's fated, and so…

It wasn't long until they reached the subway line. Or perhaps it was, the world seemed to be passing without her notice. She had a glimmer of hope that the carriages would be similarly private, but it was a pipe dream. It would appear that even Realm had a vague sense of budgeting, somewhere. Tossing her hair, she discerned the emptiest spot with a deceptively surly pout and started for it. As she strode past passengers, a blur of electric blue caught her periphery, and she paused, turning. That, no way. It couldn't be. Ange stared down the young streamer, with a cold and unwavering expression. Her giddiness was reaching an all-time high, it was undoubtedly her. Tae! Ange had been following her for a long time, and despite her current exterior, was quite the fan. A few months prior to this, Tae had even followed her cosplay page back, rendering her sleepless for days. Would she recognise her? That was impossible. No, no. She was one face among many in an endless feed. Then it is only polite to introduce yourself, right? Folding her arms beneath her chest, she mustered enough courage to part her lips, and

"Umm..."

Her tone was quiet and rather unkind.

Lex Maynard

When Jessica showed up at Lex’s door, he knew he had scored big.

Naturally after a few months, even after hearing he was accepted, he figured the beta test thing was a scam of some sort. Possibly a subscription to useless emails, cleverly hidden within the terms and conditions that he had accepted and wholeheartedly neglected to read. For this reason, he tried to keep an eye on his bank account, but he couldn’t keep the transactions straight from all the withdrawals.

Now he was on a plane, and if the world got nuked as he was flying first class he wouldn’t have even been upset. The experience was awesome, beyond awesome, it was damn cool. He had never been on a plane before, and he was elated to finally be on one now. His fingers etched the fine leather, as he sat there with unmatched excitement. He quickly looked around, grinning, and unable to keep himself contained. He wanted to touch everything, to look, to hear. His heart beat with intense anticipation. It was all he could do to give a small, excited noise, as he had to wait patiently for the airplane to take off before he could get out of his seat.

He gorged himself on the delicacies and ate more than he probably could’ve stomached. After taking a couple sips of fancy alcohol, which burned and was far too bitter for his taste, he opted not to touch the drink again.

His present was left untouched in the seat beside him and once he was satisfied with his first ever plane ride, he opened it. He was sorely unsatisfied with the contents of his gift. Nonetheless, he opened the laptop, and upon seeing the man he had the insatiable urge to immediately slam the device shut, but he wanted to give the laptop a chance as it was his one of the only forms of entertainment. After getting through a minute of begrudgingly watching the man yawn, Lex was done. “Boring as hell,” he muttered underneath his breath.

”This is the User Inter-”

He shut the laptop. He would much rather play solitaire. He shoved everything to the side and dug into his pocket for his phone.

He found himself reopening the laptop 30 minutes later.

***

Lex was stiff as he got off the plane, feeling slightly tired from reading. He reached the airport lobby, as his guide found him, he followed as he was led to the subway.

Lex sat down in one of the cars, feeling as though he was beginning a roller coaster. He tapped his headset to double check if it was secured, and didn't bother to check his wristband, he could still feel the light constriction the band gave him. The train was nice, but he’s been in a subway before, so it wasn’t anything new to him. The people here, however, were very new.

’Sup guys,” he smiled, issuing a greeting to the general group before him, before realizing there was a fridge. He quickly made his way over to grab a Dr. Pepper.

On the plane:

Isaac leaned back in his seat on the plane as he took a sip of his drink while listening to music on his phone and reading a book. This was the life.

Sure the amount of irregularities in all this suggested there was every reason to be suspicious of the opportunity, but he found the possibility this was some sort of death game, isekai thing, or similar situation well worth the risk. He had no real plans for his immediate future, so why not have some excitement?

Especially with so many fun toys to play with. Isaac admired the goodies he'd been given, trying to figure out how much information about them he could learn without violating the rules. No sense antagonizing the ones funding his current lifestyle after all.

After arriving:

A coin flip if the shared train ride was purposeful bonding time disguised as an unfortunate necessity or actually accidental. Either way no sense in staying isolated, best to get to know the other people he'd be spending his time with.

Taking the time to rifle through the snacks and finding an acceptable form of chocolate candy, Isaac put a bright smile on his face.

"Well, we're all going to spend a lot of time together, how about we introduce ourselves?"

He popped some candy in his mouth and chewed appreciatively.

"The name's Isaac."

His stomach made a gurgling sound and he sighed.

"Snacks are all well and good, but I could go for a cheeseburger. Hope there's meat where we're going."

Isaac then added another abrupt idea.

"This isn't the usual beta tester experience, I looked that kind of thing online. What do you think's going to happen? I mean one the one hand of course I hope it's on the level, but don't you think it'd be cool if there was more to this than we were told?"

He beamed again and flashed a peace sign.

"Pick me for your team if it's a death game, okay?"

Isaac chuckles.

"Just kidding, or am I? Anyway, let's get on with the introductions! My name's Isaac! Wait, I already said that. Nevermind."

Solomon Lance Marshall

WARNING: DANGEROUS SMUG LEVELS
So here he was. This was a much better flight than he'd expected, honestly. The time leading up to this moment had been quite exciting. Automated emails, boilerplate yet airtight non-disclosure agreements, and most intriguingly, a hilarious amount of personal attention paid to him. Was this for all the beta testers? Or did was it only him getting the first-class treatment? The chauffeur, a nice older man by the name of Charles, the private flights, everything seemed luxurious to the point of excess. If they were expecting this to buy rave reviews for their game once the non-disclosure agreements ran out, they'd be disappointed, Solomon mused. He'd been asked to review games before, and he'd never been anything but bluntly honest. Even his beloved Elden Ring 3 had to be viciously lambasted for its poor progression choices. Asides from the crime of making Dex Builds the meta, which he graciously refrained from critiquing too much, the lack of support for Faith builds and the ass-backwards scaling in the midgame... unforgivable. They'd fixed it in patches, thankfully.

But on the plane, there was something much more interesting than mere luxury or grousing about old games. A glass of White Valley 2023 Authoritas Chardonnay in hand, a nice vintage from his native state of California, the Professor inspects the laptop, bracelet, and headpiece. He could guess that the bracelet and headpiece were for the game, he'd heard it would have a unique control scheme. He sets up the laptop and ges to watching the video, paying close attention while 'Viktor' spoke. From that expression on his face, one thing ICE seemed to keep was the love of crunching the poor Devs. Seems like some things even Takumi couldn't revolutionize, haha.

From the sounds of it... ICE was augmented reality, then? What with the biometric features of the watch, and the rendering of the game world through the headset. Intriguing. His last run-in with fitness games had been less than... dignified, but he figured it would still at the very least be a fascinating experience. He puts them on properly, trying them out, noting the excellent ergonomics. You'd be surprised how many games companies with brand new control schemes completely forgot about that minor detail, in their rush to push new technologies out to market. He had terrible sprains from the last time he'd tried Steam's new motion controllers.

And now, for the documents. Solomon cracks his neck and knuckles, bringing out a notebook and pen and sorting out the documents before him. The Professor grins as he looks them over, a vicious thing more reminiscent of a hungry wolf than anything on a human face. Ah, time for one of his favorite past-times. Theorizing. He sorts through the lore, drawing rapid connections between different points, noting potential coding mechanisms behind basic gameplay mechanics. Stress-points to test. After a long and happy 'career' of speedrunning and lore-dives, he'd grown to have a sense of what threads to pull, as it were, to see if he could get anything out of them. And so it was that his flight passes in happy productivity...

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Tsk. How troublesome. Well, taking a private subway line should be fine. Really, this place seemed a bit of a 'company town', if this much was devoted to the corporation that ran ICE. Then again, if you were as rich as Dr. Takumi, you could do that sort of thing. Though... did it really have to have only two cars? Solomon looks around at the other men and women in the compartment, raising an eyebrow. A good mix of men and women, with more than a few beauties, and... oh, was that Tae? Small world, he supposed. The Professor affixes his controller and renderer, looking around as he takes tally of the other, non-famous people around him. That one woman there... ( mocca mocca ) Rather petite, disheveled, her general demeanor like most of his students really. For some reason, he thought he might have recognized her... somewhere. Which happened occasionally, with Solomon's memory he never forgot a face, even in passing. Solomon closes his eyes for a moment, his mind running through his memories with clockwork precision as he searches for the source of that faint recognition.

There. November 2030. Introduction to Applied Quantum Field Theory, a student by the name of Mikael Dreyfuss. And a- Oh, that was one of the times he had to quietly point out a student had a risque wallpaper on display for everyone behind them. And that woman had been on screen wearing... Well, he wouldn't dwell on it. She did look much better in that photo, but then again, who looks good all the time anyway? His eyes snap open, Solomon quietly chucking those particular thoughts into the dustbin. Not his business, and while he did love to tease, poking about that would just be in bad taste. And Solomon was, if nothing, a man of class and manners. Solomon pours himself a glass, choosing a nice mead this time, before ambling on over to Tae ( animegirl20 animegirl20 ) and that other woman.

"Ah, Tae. It's been a few months, how have you been doing? We did a collab back in December, if you'll recall."

He looks to the other young woman, and gives her a disarming smile.

"Though I'm afraid I'm not quite familiar with you, miss...? My name is Dr. Solomon Lance Marshall."

Oh? A sensitive sort, wasn't she?

Must've been the idol-type or the shut-in type then. While bubblegum girl deigned to scan his entire body, Arlo himself locked eyes with her. A turquoise hue, like a lake so rich with minerals that it had killed all the fish within. What a rare color! Was her hair dyed to match her eyes, or were both colored as such to pursue her aesthetic? The corners of his eyes crinkled into a smile as he lifted two fingers off his beer to acknowledge her. But there wasn't any need for him to approach, to extend anything more than a visual greeting.

After all, another had seated herself before him, and he certainly was not going to just ignore her.

As a smattering of words were tossed in his direction, Arlo took another drag of his cigarette and leaned back, blowing a white cloud upwards. The nicotine was hitting his system now, mixing with alcohol to create the headiness that had become such a comforting skin to wear, and he turned back to the woman. On the older side, for sure. Had the air of a mom, with the sort of hairstyle you'd expect out of a housewife. Or a librarian. Whatever it was, it was a cute normie sort of look. Her English was on the fast side, of course, but hey, no big deal. It was easy enough to tell that she was nervous, and snippets of 'wouldn't' and 'vacation', with the questioning intonation at the end, guided him to the intention of her words.

Especially compared to the more excited, extroverted proclamations of the 'Isaac' who was beaming from ear to ear, chewing on chocolates in the animated manner that teenagers oft possessed. Almost a shame then, that his little display affected no particular response. Indeed, the younger of the dandies was already making moves on bubblegum and her alter-universe self!

A cruel fate, all around.

"Relax, relax," Arlo smiled warmly, swinging his legs off the couch and leaning his elbows on his knees as he cocked his head to the side. "Is just game, nee-chan. Play games, eat and sleep free. Fun future! So smile, smile." As if to emphasize the point, he reached across the table, offering his beer to her, while forming a v with his other hand, pressing the two extended fingers against the corners of his mouth.

Ash dribbled upon the back of his hand, but he made no indication that he noticed.

"And hey Ai-sa-ku!" He continued, eyes flicking up to the glasses. "My name is Tachikawa Arlo! Good to talk big. You president man?"

Desmond W. Adler
Location: Realm's private subway
Interactions: Spoiled Bread Spoiled Bread
Humble beginnings
On the morning of the departure towards Realm industries, Desmond double-checked if he had everything he needed for his travel and stay there.
With his suitcase filled with necessities and a briefcase of his favourite snacks and a thermos or two of his anti-jetlag tea, he was nearly ready to go, just needed to get his favourite hat and cane. After doing so he exited his apartment and was greeted by his chauffeur.
He welcomed him with a tip of his hat and heartfelt words.
"Greetings to you! I dare suppose you are to take me to the airport am I right?"
The chauffeur simply responded with a nod before helping Desmond with his luggage.
Upon arriving at the airport Desmond was astounded by the authority of the Realms Industries with how quickly he was let into the airplane.
Compared to his early flights it's as if it happened in a flash compared to his other experiences with airports.

Shortly after he received his gift from the stewardess and the plane took off the ground he opened the box and carefully laid out its content on a table.
After a bit of looking at each of the things he opened the laptop and listened to the tired poor man on the screen closely following his instructions.

'Somebody should at least give him some coffee or tea, he looks bloody tired.'
Desmond thought to himself as he finished listening to Viktor, then he checked if he properly attached both of the devices before taking out his first thermos with tea, and began slowly drinking it while reading over the documents.

First contact
As he got off the plane with relative ease and breezed his way towards the guide he lightly stretched his old rickety bones and simply welcomed the man with a smile on his face.
And shortly after followed after him, and entered the subway area, he then yet again greeted another worker there politely, before entering the car.

Looking around he found quite the arrangement of people within.
Finding that one of the people there might be suffering from a headache or jetlag, from the way she was slumped and massaging her temples.
So he slowly approached her while taking out his second thermos, upon arriving he held it out towards her while saying with a little smile on his face.

"Here you go, young lady! Chamomile tea with honey and ginger, should help with your head a bit or at least hydrate you a bit."
"Ah, where are my manners!" Desmond added dramatically, before taking off his hat and placing it on his chest with a slight bow, then he continued.
"The name is Desmond Will Adler. Nice to meet you, young lady. And if I might be a bit brash can I know your name as well? In case you don't prefer to be called young lady by me that is."

He then heard a young man's voice introducing himself to others and he wanted to hear others' introductions so being an older gentleman he had to do simply that, but first he put the thermos next to the young lady. After doing so he stood with his front facing as many people as he could in this cart, took off his hat yet again placed it on his chest with a slight bow and said calmly yet loud enough so that everyone could hear him. "Greetings everyone! My name is Desmond Will Adler! Nice to meet you all on this fine day."
When he ended his greeting, he placed his hat back on his head and awaited everyone's response, especially the young lady's.

"Please be seated. The Train will be Departing shortly."

At exactly thirty minutes past the hour, a system announcement filled every car with an ordinary pre-recorded, male voice. Nonetheless, the sudden interruption was rather pointless, as the acceleration of the train soon proved to be unbelievably smooth. Even standing, one wouldn't have noticed the train's departure any more than someone who had already been seated. What would have been noticed, however, were the internal changes that began to occur after a couple of minutes had passed by.

A gentle hum, akin to faint white noise, began to fill the cars, as the so-called generalized calibration access point began its boot sequence. The initialization process took yet another couple of minutes before the hum faded away and a soft, blue light began to fill the air. On contact with this light, every renderer and controller would have sprung to life--signaled by a small blinking LED on the side of the renderer, and the 'Waiting for Source' message that appeared on the controller's screen. Once every device was online, the voice returned; this time with much more useful and exciting information.

"All devices have been successfully connected to the generalized calibration access point. Please prepare for the rendering of artificial reality. As it is your first time, you may experience some minor symptoms, including mild discomfo--Zztsdfdsthe...zZdtsfsm.........................."

Mid-sentence, the pre-recorded announcement suddenly became a garbled mess with hints of a feminine voice leaking in-between the male's gibberish. Soon, however, only static remained. It was a rather peculiar occurrence, but one that gave the participates no time to consider what had happened, as a blinding white light exploded throughout the cars. It soon became apparent that the aforementioned mild discomfort was a total lie--the true symptoms being a pounding headache, loss of balance, and even nausea to the point of potentially throwing up. To make matters worse, neither the light, nor the symptoms seemed to fade, and the very surroundings seemed to grow both turbulent and unbearably loud. This continued for what felt like an eternity until every just stopped.

-----

The surrounding environment was both familiar, yet incredibly foreign. All of the participants were still in train cars, but gone was any chance that they were still functional. The plush seats were mangled and torn, the once-pristine walls were battered and corroded, and most of the frosted glass was either shattered or missing. Somehow the now-dangling lights of the car were still somewhat functional; though the light they produced was very faint and often flickered in an ominous way. What once was the rear of the second car was now a portal that swirled with a myriad of colors and had a holographic announcements in bold red text:

YOU CANNOT LOGOUT
IN A DUNGEON

Sure enough, the sounds of low growls could be heard outside of the train where four of the dog monsters were busy prowling the platform. Thankfully, they seemed to have no interest for the players inside of the cars and aimlessly continued their mindless patrols. Back inside the train, each of the players remained only somewhat unchanged. The same outfits still clothed their bodies and any items they were carrying before, would have been still found in their inventory. The biggest change, however, was the new sensations coming from their own self. Now affected by the stats, each player would have had a different sense of being--in some ways potentially sturdier, stronger, more dexterous or agile, and in other ways potentially weaker. Those with mana sense would have immediately felt the pure essence of power existing in the very air which surrounded them, waiting for them to attempt to manipulate it at will. The renderer was also gone and the controller had become a far more intricate device. Rather than resemble a smart-watch, it was like a futuristic bracelet that stretched across half of the forearm and had a series of options spread across its now-elongated screen. From left to right, there were a total of six selectable options with the option to logout also disabled here as well.

Player Info | Social | Inventory | Map | Quests | Logout: Disabled

Out of the blue, a distinctly feminine voice began to talk from the bracelets in each player's preferred language and in a tone so soft and soothing that it was almost enthralling to listen too.

"Welcome to the World of ICE. As part of your calibration process, you have been selected to participate in a hidden dungeon. This is a specialized instance that has been scaled to match you current levels. Using the controller on your wrist, you may check your current stats, skills, and inventory; however, for the purpose of this event, you have already been pre-sorted into a two party alliance..."

There was a small pause before three UI windows appeared in front of every player, also in their preferred language, with one depicting player info, another with the party list, and finally one with the current quest objective.

Broken from his daylight reverie, Jay looked up as more and more new testers entered the subway car. Curiosity did of course get the best of him as he began to shift his attention to whatever thoughts were roaming around in his head to the new faces. A couple other guys around his age, some guys who looked older than they probably were, and more girls than he'd give credit to the gaming community. If he was a little more sociable, maybe he would've struck up a conversation with someone in the car. The past was the past however, and as introductions were given, Jay himself chimed up. "You can call me Jay. I'm from South Korea. Nice to meet you all." he introduced himself, bowing slightly from his wheelchair. His introduction would have continued if not for the suddenness of everything that soon followed.

The blinking lights, the sudden announcement going to disembodied gargles and static, the turbulence, bright light, and sudden nausea all caught Jay off guard. Nearly falling out of his wheelchair, Jay steadied himself as loud noise began to ring out. Covering his ears in an attempt to stave off the noise, Jay let out a grunt of discomfort which turned into a scream as he remembered that ill fated night. Blacking out, Jay could only faintly feel the world seemingly shift and contort around him... or so he thought.

* * * * *

Slowly coming too from where he was, Jay blinked as the haze cleared from his eyes and he began to be able to focus on his surroundings. Ignoring the screens in front of him and the voices coming from seemingly nowhere, he sat up and observed everyone else in the car. "Is everyone alright?" he called out. Well this was fantastic, wasn't it? Rolling to one of the car's windows, he looked outside and before disbelief or panic took over, Jay let out a small gasp, he noticed the scenery. The world was undeniably recognizable, but the monsters were definitely new. "We're in the game..." he said awed. "We're in the game..." Slowly, using the wall of the car as support, Jay tried to put weight onto his legs and tried. Shakily, even stumbling once or twice, Jay felt it; he was walking again.

"This couldn't have been planned... or could it? Could they have wanted us to accidently step in the game world early, or is this some sort of bug in the system? Either way..." Gaming, no matter the scenario, was something Jay was entirely familiar with. MMOs, RPGs, MOBAs, FPSs, all genres of games Jay had once dove into and climbed in a ranked or even professional setting. This world... it was just a more realistic game. On shaky legs, and still leaning against the subway wall, not quite used to standing again, Jay swiped through the screens, reading each segment of information, mentally storing each piece of information received as the voice from his bracelet, from everyone's bracelet rang out. Mission objectives, level requirements, time limit, even the party composition. He would crush this game as he had crushed opponents and games in the past. After all, he was Monarch, one of the best pro gamers in the world.

"Inventory..." he muttered tapping the screen on his bracelet, wristband, power glove, thing. Simply looking at his wheelchair and thinking 'store' Jay watched it disappear into his Inventory, watching the entry appear. Going to the next screen, Player Stats, Jay quickly took note of his own states. Lower constitution, high dexterity and agility, he could categorize himself as a rogue or assassin. Inwardly smirking, Jay thought a simple command from the tutorial voice, as he would deign to call it now. "Equip Gear Set." A sheathed blade and a belt appeared on his person, the new weight, somewhat comforting. In this game world, in this game, he was going to be the best. Now just to get the other members of his party before that timer ran out. They were probably panicking...

Solomon Lance Marshall
Tactics of Mistake by Gordon Dickenson said:
"Trouble rather the tiger in his lair than the sage amongst his books. For to you kingdoms and armies are things mighty and enduring, but to him they are but toys of the moment, to be overturned by the flicking of a finger ..."

WARNING: DANGEROUS SMUG LEVELS
Solomon perks up at the noise, grinning as the system announcement begins to sound off. Finally. Their first foray into the system. The hum begins, the professor practically bouncing on his feet as he waits. Yes, yes, everyone got their devices on, the access point was calibration'd, get on with it! The glitching pre-recorded announcement, however, caught his attention. He'd seen his share of bugs. But this? This was new. The software glitch of... a woman's voice? Leeching through the male's... How did that even happen? That should be a pre-recorded message, and just mundane data corruption shouldn't alter a voice that much. It was as if a voice-filter had-

And then the effects of the transition hit him like a truck, and he completely lost his train of thought. Solomon staggers, bracing himself against the wall of the train, taking deep breaths to center himself as he weathers the volley of sensations. He was the captain of his ship, master in his soul. By his will his mind is set into motion. By his intent is thought translated to action, through the medium of flesh and bone. He refused to allow this much to phase him unduly, even as it feels like he's trying to stand in the midst of a hurricane. If this was how it always felt during calibration, Solomon thought, they really needed to fix the goddamn user experience.

Inhale. Exhale. Let the storm pass through you. Inhale. Exhale. The mountain stands no matter how the seas batter its slopes. Inhale. Ex-

Then it clears, and the Professor looks around himself, finally in the game properly. The first thing he notices... Is the feeling of the wall under his hand. Rust replaced smooth metal. And... He takes a step, and takes a little gasp. His whole body felt different. Less coordinated, much less in fact, and yet... stronger. Like there was a dragon under his skin. Haha. He could get used to this. The feeling of less bodily control though... That he could do without. Solomon takes a few experimental steps, holding out his hands and feeling how his fingers wiggled. Yes, definitely less dextrous than before. Tsk. And there was something else... Yes, the feeling of... an aether around him. Like a single resonant sound-without-sound, heard with the heart rather than the ear. He was about to look at his profile to see what was going on with that, when he looks towards the rear of the car and freezes. Those words.

"If we are in a SAO situation," Solomon declares sternly, "I'm going to inflict grievous trauma to someone's solar plexus. Repeatedly."

The hounds lurking outside don't disturb him, fighting enemies from the get-go was just the Soulsbourne way. Hopefully, they wouldn't have to die as often. Solomon's eyes pore over the player info with a rising sense of both annoyance and excitement. So that was what he was sensing. Mana. It was a strange feeling, but he hoped to hone it over time, he'd been quite curious what lore insights one could determine with the application of a sufficiently honed Mana Sense skill. The other skill... Mana Strike. Yes, that would be very useful indeed for what he had in mind. He wondered how many ways he could use that ability, this seemed like the sort of system that encouraged creative play. And of course, he started naked. As was traditional in these sorts of RPGs. One had to take everything other than their skills themselves. Just the way he liked it

That they were already in a two-party system did made this a bit simpler. They only had a minute to compose themselves, so best to make this quick.

"As the fighter, me and Arlo will take point, I suppose," the Professor says, as he turns to his newfound companions, "I'm not sure what skills the rest of you have, but I suppose we'll just figure out how you guys can help the frontline as we go. Let's just get this over with. Bug or not, the sooner we clear this dungeon, the sooner we all get to our new luxury accomodations, eh? Equip Gear Set."

The Professor blinks for a moment in surprise when he sees that someone else did, indeed, spawn in with gear. Basic starter gear, but gear nonetheless. Blast and damnation, did he just end up getting fucked by whatever character generation system this thing used? Fuck it. He cracks his knuckles, frowning as he looks towards the swirling portal. If they wanted him to use fisticuffs, he'd beat a dog or twenty into the ground. At least until he got his hands on something decent. Then, he'd start cracking this game's bugs open with a fucking vengeance.

__hatsune_miku_vocaloid_and_1_more_drawn_by_takanashi_kei_hitsujikan__9b190351e3f0c856a16f03c8...jpgTae suddenly stopped fiddling with her necklace and a irritated look appeared on her face. Why did I even wear this thing? she thought to herself. She looked down at her necklace annoyed. It was like a good luck charm for her but it happened to be given to her by someone she despised and she couldn't help but think about them every time she wore it. Trying to distract herself from her thoughts she glanced around again when suddenly a boy with white hair caught her eye. Tae studied him for a moment then her eyes widen. That's Jay! She couldn't believe it! He was a esports athlete. She had been a fan. You could almost see the stars in her eyes but then that's when she noticed something.....Wait when did he get in a wheelchair?! How did he get in a wheelchair?! Am I going to have to destroy somebody? Her thoughts were interrupted when someone attempted to speak with her who had a rather unkind tone. Tae turned to the person and saw girl with long black hair who....looked strangely familiar. Tae stared at the girl. I swear I've seen that face before. Tae squinted, still looking at the red eye girl, as she tried to remember but nothing was coming to her. "Hey do I kno-" Before she could finish her sentence she heard a familiar voice that made her want to jump off this subway.

"Ah, Tae. It's been a few months, how have you been doing? We did a collab back in December, if you'll recall."

Oh she recalled alright he was not a easy person to forget. And what a collab it was her followers loved it. Thought it was thoroughly entertaining as he teased the hell out of her. She lost her composer many of times. But of course everyone laughed including him. She had never been so exhausted after a stream in her life. "I should of known I'd run into you here. I wouldn't be surprised if you weren't picked randomly." Tae said as she lean back and crossed her arms. Tae then noticed some guy named Issac was introducing himself. It didn't seem like anyone was really paying attention to him. Can't relate.

"Please be seated. The Train will be Departing shortly."

"Finally."
Tae said to herself seeming more relaxed. She curious to about what their accommodations would be like. Everything had been so luxurious so far.

"All devices have been successfully connected to the generalized calibration access point. Please prepare for the rendering of artificial reality. As it is your first time, you may experience some minor symptoms, including mild discomfo--Zztsdfdsthe...zZdtsfsm.........................."

"Wait we're doing this now?!" Tae's ,bitch run, radar was going off. It didn't help that there seem to be glitching and what minor symptoms there shouldn't be any. Suddenly she soon felt these "minor" symptoms. Her head started throbbing and she felt like she was going to throw up. It was pretty bad. Everything happened in a blur and suddenly she passed out. Tae woke up when she heard a feminine voice coming from her watch....well bracelet now.

"Welcome to the World of ICE."

Tae sat up holding her head and her eyes widen when she noticed subway train and how different it looked. "Wha-"

"As part of your calibration process, you have been selected to participate in a hidden dungeon. This is a specialized instance that has been scaled to match you current levels. Using the controller on your wrist, you may check your current stats, skills, and inventory; however, for the purpose of this event, you have already been pre-sorted into a two party alliance..."

Tae looked at her bracelet seeing who was in her party. If she hadn't been pissed and confused she would have been fangirling about the fact she was in a party with Jay.

"You have one minute until the doors open and the dungeon commences. To assume a combative state, simple say or think the command Equip Gear Set."

Tae sat there trying to get over her nausea that refused to go away. She then slowly stood up and spoke loudly. "Alright hold up hold up! I'm going to need everyone to freeze!" She straighten out her clothes. "Before we run out there like bunch chickens with are heads cut off. I would like to point out how VERY WEIRD ALL OF THIS IS.......They disabled the fucking log out button!!" Tae crossed her arms looking at everybody. "Yeah its for the dungen but even then that shouldn't be allowed. And then they throw us in here like like....ugh!" She wasn't stupid she knew they were going to have to do it but she wasn't sure she liked the fact that some of them seem willing to just run head in first. She breathed in slowly when she felt her nausea coming back and put her hand on her stomach. "Why the hell am do i still feel like I'm going puke?"

The young man before her seemed to be doing his best to put an animated face on as he lounged, in an effort to put himself at ease as he reassured her in turn. Well, that was what it seemed like to her anyway. Was that projecting? Either way..."You're right, there's nothing to worry about. Guess we should sit back and relax..." Punctuating her point, she brought her own can to her lips and took a sip. Nee-chan? Japanese? She knew she should have kept with those online lessons with that damn owl.

As the older man ( Megilagor Megilagor ) introduced himself, Marie turned to him with a nod. "Nice to meet you, Desmond. Didn't expect-"

But before she could finish her sentence, the announcement came. And nothing could have prepared Marie for what came next.

Explosion.

Blinding light.

World turned upside down.

When she pulled herself together and got back on her feet, the clock was already counting down to the start of the "dungeon", as it were.

It was a relief to note that they had already been sorted into parties, by some manner of matching system...though they were still two at the same starting point. Did the devs expect some kind of competition?

"Oh, um...equip gear set!" No sooner were her words spoken than a short dagger materialized in her hand, faintly gleaming with a rune inscribed on the hilt.

As her fist closed around the simple weapon, a strange sensation gripped her, almost like water pressure or a dusty room. So that was mana, huh...

Glancing at her party mates, Marie smiled. "So, shall we lead the charge, or take another route? I'll follow." ERode ERode Spoiled Bread Spoiled Bread housegoat13 housegoat13

Sharon Weiss
Location: Subway Line -> Dungeon - Subway Line

Sharon felts like she's going to puke, she pulled out a hastily crumpled plastic bag from her pocket and was prepared for the worst when a gentle- middle aged man approached her and offered her a cup of warm tea. Just from the aroma alone she could tell it would be relaxing so she took the cup and gulped it down without much thinking. The combination of the pleasant tea and the stinging hot liquid down her throat immediately killed her nausea thankfully, although now she thought about it she should drink the tea slowly.

"Thank you for the tea, umm... Sir Mister Desmond." She wasn't sure how she should call him so she just whatever english vocabularies she knew and threw it out.

"My name is Sharon, Sharon Weiss. Nice to meet you too." Sharon let out a wide grin as she introduced herself.

Not long after an announcement was broadcasted throughout the train followed by blinking light from their device, probably in that order, Sharon actually forgot that she's still wearing the devices. Then intense light flooded the train, followed by overwhelming amount of noises and several other discomforts. When all the sense assaults finally stops Sharon immediately opened her plastic bag and jumped into the corner. it took her a few more seconds until she could recompose herself and scanned her new surrounding.

"I'm sorry Sir Mister Desmond. I think I just threw up your tea, virtually." Even Sharon didn't think that her words made much sense, but based on the announcement and radical change of the environment apparently they're now were already in the game. That was a pretty violent login process, huh.

"Equip Gear Set!" Sharon quickly acclimated herself with the game's UI and excitedly tried exploring the available menus. She was wondering why she couldn't log out in the dungeon but quickly justifies it as an attempts to prevent trolls from getting everyone killed once the game was released. What she couldn't justify was the fact that she had an equipment for the off hand but not the primary one.

"Well, our mission is to claim the area, I guess? So ready or not we must face the dogs" Sharon replied at Marie's question. "Listen, well everyone. this is the strategy: We go out there, and hit them until they stop moving."

Twas a light as bright as a camera's flash, extended into perpetuity, accompanied too by a sensation as familiar as every morning he had ever experienced during the first three years of his endless sabbatical. A pounding headache, a loss of balance, and a vomit-inducing nausea struck him in glorious, nostalgic waves, and Arlo laughed, already in the most comfortable position he could be in to bear it. Was something wrong with ICE's technology? Did a nuclear bomb just get set off? Was the afterlife a real thing after all? Or...

Light faded, and reality became augmented. The beer can one hand turned into scrap metal and the cigarette in his mouth crumbled to ash upon his loungewear. The springs of a torn couch dug into his back, while the opulent lights flickered weakly, casting erratic shadows. Naturally, Arlo's gaze turned towards the mini-fridge, and it was a sad day indeed, to see its door torn off its hinge, the contents long pilfered. Ruin, indeed, had visited this now-forsaken train station, while a glowing portal spun like a screensaver on one end of the train and big dogs walked back and for outside. Which meant, when combined with the voice that sounded from the bracelet...

"Alright, alright," Arlo said, bobbing his head up and down, "Looks like it's play time! Oh, and Jay-bro, our machine basically talked about the whole thing, so, ya know, it's maybe just a normal thing. Ca-li-bray-shun and all. Pleasant surprise, don'tcha think?"

It was a bit curious though. A lot of them looked way more concerned and scared than anything else. Did they expect something else? Was there something he missed in the documents that he slept through? Dapper-Dude Junior looked to be the most tense of the lot, and with Bubblegum Girl going at it too with her own hijinks, well...it took all of Arlo three steps to cross the distance, as he patted her on the back. "Your vomit's not that tasty, is it? Easier to get rid of the sick if you just throw up now. Not like anyone here's gonna make this train their home, after all~"

As he did so, the man flipped through his Socials and fired off friend requests for everyone in the 'Alliance', scanning over the party and quest details while he was at it. Yup, that more or less made sense to him. The system must have been kind indeed, to give him the least to do!

Whether Bubblegum Girl relieved herself of nausea through oral ejection or opted rather to kick him in the shins, the lanky man backed off after a few moments and massaged the back of his neck. The ones who looked to be part of his party were talking about stuff at this point, but it wasn't really forming into anything concrete. What was this again...right! Like when friendly acquaintances try to make plans on where to go, but they all say the same thing without saying anything concrete enough to actually form a plan around! Which was fine for vibes, and even finer when there wasn't anything pressing happening, but ninety minutes and wolf-monsters?

"Equip gear set and hello party-people! And alliance buddies too! It's crazy that y'all are speaking my language now, but I'm all for it!"

From his raised hand, a shield, broad and sturdy, pixelated out from the aether.

"I took a quick look through my stuff and it's looking like I'm the only person with a shield here, and I'm also a pretty healthy guy, but it's also like, super blah for me to actually hit people, so I was thinking...we're all friends, here, right? The limit of a party is five people max, but we're all playtesting together here? Why don't I just head outside, play with the doggies, and then the rest of you can come in afterwards to beat em up one by one? We all gotta get outta here eventually, but that doesn't mean we need to get out at the same time, or get out only to work with our own parties, ne?"

Arlo snapped his fingers.

"So hey, even if we're not allowed to, let's just do it as one big mega-party. More the merrier, as they say."

Lex opened the soda tab to his Dr. Pepper and took a deep gulp out of the can, sighing in satisfaction. He noted Issaac’s and Demond’s names and was on the verge of introducing himself as well before another male voice cut him off.

"Please be seated. The Train will be Departing shortly."

Lex didn’t bother to get seated, instead he maintained a sturdy stance, and placed a supportive hand on the fridge beside him. He brought his drink close to his chest, but the speed at which the train descended was barely a bother.

"All devices have been successfully connected to the generalized calibration access point. Please prepare for the rendering of artificial reality. As it is your first time, you may experience some minor symptoms, including mild discomfo--Zztsdfdsthe...zZdtsfsm.........................."

Weird-” Lex was beginning to mutter before his quiet consideration quickly flooded into alarm.

He made a pained groan, before dropping his soda to clutch his head, and he suddenly felt nauseated as well. His stomach might as well have turned inside out with how queasy it made him. He unknowingly stumbled, unsure of how much more of this he could take. Then as quickly as the overwhelming feelings came, they were gone.

When Lex reopened his eyes, the first thing he saw was the old red tin of his spilt soda that now showed a fairly big stain of liquid on the faded floor. The sight confused him, and he bent down to touch the can. He paused, surprised at how quickly he was able to grab the metal. He dropped the tin again, stood up, and bent down. He outreached his hand and retracted it. He felt lighter. Lighter was the wrong word to describe it, but he felt loose, faster. He felt as though a lock on his body was suddenly stretched, that he was no longer within the confines of his own cage, and it was amazing.
Growling signified for him to look outwards towards the train doors and to finally recognize his surroundings as part of the game.

"Welcome to the World of ICE. As part of your calibration process, you have been selected to participate in a hidden dungeon. This is a specialized instance that has been scaled to match your current levels. Using the controller on your wrist, you may check your current stats, skills, and inventory; however, for the purpose of this event, you have already been pre-sorted into a two-party alliance..."

He stared at the three windows that appeared before him, his player stats confused him, but he decided not to dwell on it. "Equip set gear." he commanded, feeling as though for a second nothing would happen, but he felt a weight on his right leg, and he looked down. He had a sword. It wasn't a boring dull and fake sword either, not like the ones you would find in a toy section of a store. It was a real, genuine sword. He grasped the hilt, and took the rapier out of its sheath, looking at the blade. There might as well have been stars in his eyes with how magnificent he thought it was.

Lex looked up from his sword as one of the guy's began to speak. Lex couldn't explain the talkative male any other way besides weird, and something just felt off about him. Something that Lex found mistrustful.

"Doing a mega party seems a little messy..." Lex answered Arlo, "We've only known each other for less than a couple of minutes, and we're expected to successfully work with this many people? Just playing with our own parties seems more managed," he finished, "and more fun." he grinned.

Her brows furrowed stiffly in reply to the staring. This…was profoundly uncomfortable.

During this short pause, it dawned on her what a mistake it was to so gratuitously approach Tae. Impulse had gotten the better of her once again, and now she must suffer the burden of consequence. Exposing herself as an infatuated fangirl. Such things are supposed to be a private matter between you and your browser, and not something to inflict upon the sorry victim of idolisation themselves, especially not when you are scheduled to be boarding with them. She couldn't help it, she just really admired her! This nodus aside, conversation was still not something Ange was seeking. With a new lease of heat to stain her cheeks, and a total depletion of dignity, Ange awaited her reply.

"Ah, Tae. It's been a few months, how have you been doing? We did a collab back in December, if you'll recall."

The brunette slowly lifted her head to face the source of this new voice. With a tilt and a slight wince, recollection came flooding back to her. Ah, the smug man! Smug sir! Though the stream he featured in admittedly drew more than a few snorts of laughter from her, many of them thanks to him, the thought of venturing through dungeons with such a pompous personality made Ange recoil. Who knows, perhaps he'll be swiftly killed off. Is that possible in ICE? What was in that manual again? Her brain fogged. Can I leave?

Deciding to be a stoic in the face of these piling troubles, Ange shook this off and let her attention wander to the other passengers brazenly exchanging their introductions. They all seemed friendly, and she felt a quiet relief. Strangely, followed the even quieter wish to befriend them all, a little. Or, at the very least, try to speak to them all, a little. That much was inescapable, so an effort to be amicable would not go amiss - but what a horror, all the same.

"Though I'm afraid I'm not quite familiar with you, miss...? My name is Dr. Solomon Lance Marshall."

Startled by the sudden address, Ange shot up and turned her harsh gaze back to meet his. It'd seem she scrutinized his character too soon. "I, uh..." A gentle shake of the head, her hair wavering. She exhaled, composing herself. "I'm…"

The voice on the sound system distorted. Before she could gather any reaction, a paroxysm of pain overcame her. This can't be my iron deficiency. Losing her footing, Ange stumbled forwards and threw one trembling hand upon the headrest of a chair, to which her head hit hard and fast. She gave in to the sudden convulsions, and dropped to her knees, cradling her head with a whimpering groan.

When her eyes fluttered open, she found herself kneeling on the ground now slick with grime and damp. The pain had somewhat dissipated, but there was a new, foreign sensation in its stead. Pleasantly heady, and intoxicating with energy. So this was ICE. Raising her wrist before her, she began to browse the functions, clicking aimlessly through each page. A slight curl came to her lips, familiar summoning! If nothing else, she'd at least have a pet to befriend. Content with this fact, she continued to skim the stats. While her concern was piqued by the difference in CON and INT, without a grasp on the averages, it meant little to her. She'd hoped her current weakness was at least in part due to the fact a bug had completely terrorised the cars, and so she continued. Inventory, equipped. Party, checked. Map, read. Logout, blocked? The voice sounded out again.

"A dungeon, eh…" The woman mumbled to the floor, weakly pulling herself to her feet and flattening the creases of her dress. Listening vaguely to the strategies and complaints being thrown about the car, Ange gripped her staff in one hand and began to gently hit the palm of the other, judging it intently. It'd appear she was sizing the staff up for melee use. There was hysteria growing among some of the players, but Ange felt no particular way about this start to the game, she was just happy to play. Whether both parties teamed up (isn’t that man being too optimistic?) or she went in solo, Ange was happy all the same. This was what they were here for, after all. She looked to Tae, the poor girl seemed like she was about to blow a fuse. "Mmmm. It'd be unfair if we could log out to rest during fights and the wolfies out there couldn't…Wouldn’t it? This is fair..." Her tone was unchanged, and the staff thwarting restlessly continued. “I’m Ange - Um, I'm in your party.” She turned to sheepishly regard the other two members.

Desmond W. Adler

Location: Realm's private subway -> Dungeon
Interactions: ERode ERode , Spoiled Bread Spoiled Bread , Nellancholy Nellancholy , housegoat13 housegoat13
Strange happenstance

Desmond simply nodded at the two women before a blinding appeared before his eyes, then the headache and nausea hit him and he fell to one knee while holding himself partially up with the use of his cane. As his ailments slowly faded his eyes opened and as if he saw a world anew. He was still on the train but it was as if a long time had passed it looked completely abandoned. Realizing that the people that were there with him before were still there he felt a weight lessen on his heart. 'At least I'm not in this alone.'
Desmond then slowly stood up while helping himself with a cane, and as he stood he felt different, he felt healthier and stronger, maybe a bit less dexterous but it was a new feeling for him that he planned to cherish.
"Don't worry young Sharon, you can just call me Desmond, or if you would like you can even call me Gramps. And don't worry about the tea I should still have some, so after this, I can give you some more or even brew you a new one."
It took old Desmond a while to fiddle with the controller and accept the young man's social invite and send it to the others gathered here just in case.
After doing so he simply thought 'Equip gear set', and as his new equipment appeared on him he decided to look at his stats and skills.
Having comprehended them after a bit, he decided to try sensing the ambient mana, for they were still in a grace period where they couldn't be attacked, and not knowing your most basic skill could lead to your downfall.

The feeling was odd and offputting but at the same time calming. 'So this is mana.' He thought.
As he stopped concentrating on the mana, he heard two people bicker, it was a young tattooed man and the shield-bearing man.
'That one I will call him Sciath till he reveals his name to me.'
Shaking his head he walked closer to them before speaking.
"While yes doing it in our parties seems more manageable that does not mean it would be any less efficient young lad. Yes we barely know each other that's why no matter who we work with we will have the same chances of surviving the ordeal. But doing it the way this man is saying is better in this situation, for not everyone knows how their skills work or how should they fight. And while I'm not saying we should do it all the time, but wouldn't it be a shame if we failed the tutorial dungeon because of someone's thrill-seeking addiction!"
At the end of his little speech, he stood beside Sciath, while laying his hand on his shoulder.
"You have my cane and my magic, young men. Although I don't know how the system will react to that. But even if it forbids doing what you said we should still help each other if we can, even if it is only an exchange of information about the enemy's weak points or when one is sneaking behind another one."
Then he awaited the ending of the countdown before the doors opened, and to begin this little war of theirs.

"Eh, five rounds up to ten, ya know?"

And his parties were in groups of ten to twenty. Just enough to pack up a cozy izakaya or a cheap karaoke room with friendly faces and reasonably drunk acquaintances. What could be more fun than having more people, after all? If it was a game, the beginning ought to be easy enough for people to mess around, and if it turned out to be hard after all, then he was going to give ICE a terrible review. Maybe. Or maybe he'll just say he liked everything anyways, because writing meaningful reviews wouldn't be worth his time.

Oh, but the old man seemed fine with it! Arlo flashed a thumbs up to the fellow and grinned lop-sidedly. "Yup yup, hit 'em up with the jolly ol' cooperation. And you can just call me Arlo, my guy. If I'm going to go by 'young man', it'll probs demote the rest of the fellows to 'boys and girls'."

What other banter would have to wait though. Talking passed the time swiftly, and a minute was up before any of them knew it. As the doors opened up, sliding automatically to the sides despite their ruined state, Arlo whistled sharply, the first of the players to step out...and the first to then step off to the side, before swinging his shield against the train car. A hearty 'clang' sounded through the destitute locale, all the doggies immediately turning their heads towards him. No barking, no growling, just a full-headed sprint towards him!

Hm...they were a lot bigger than they looked, huh? Really though, in retrospect, even raccoons were scary when they ran right at you, and these...

"Ok, counting on the rest of y'all!"

And with that, Arlo dropped into his maximal defensive position whenever he pissed off a gymbro. Back against the train, curled up into a ball, and with the Aura of Hedonism cranked right the fuck up, he hoisted his shield, withstood the impact of four dogs fighting each other to get at him, and, well...

[Bulwark Active]

...this wasn't so bad after all!

He may have been stuck, but the doggies were more or less stuck with him now, so enraged by his defenses and his cowardly attitude that they were fully consumed by the desire to take a bite out of his alcohol-infused blood. Which meant that Arlo himself was free to fumble through his inventory, pull out his phone and start playing some music!

Jang 'Jay' Jeong-ho
Location: Broad Meadows Station

Whether or not it was the realism behind the situation or the abruptness in which it occurred, Jay took it all in stride. From where he was leaning against the car wall, his eyes kept flitting between the Social screen on his menu bracelet and the other members of the party. There was a gleam held within his eyes, one of appraisal as he took in everyone's roles and appearance. It wasn't one of superiority, but of consideration, curiosity. The parties, which he dubbed Too Many People Already Know Each Other and Nobody Knows Who's Who both seemed too conveniently formed for his tastes. Still, it wasn't much, but Jay knew with the clock ticking down before the dungeon opened, he needed to get everyone together.

On shaky legs, Jay made his way over to Tae, intent on helping the streamer ease herself into their situation. "Miss Tae," he whispered as he stood by her. "Miss Tae, everything is going to be okay." he said, trying to reassure her, taking her hands into his own to comfort her. "This is only the tutorial dungeon. It shouldn't be too difficult to clear and if it was, I can guarantee you we will still get through this challenge. This is just like all the games you've played on stream, and all the games I've played live before thousands as well, just a little more realistic. We will get through this." he said, resolution shining in his eyes. If Solomon was right about this situation being similar to SAO, that really old anime, he would do whatever he could to get these people out. Turning to Ange and Solomon, he gently let go of Tae's hands.

"My introduction did get cut off earlier." he said, bowing slightly again. "My name is Jeong-ho from South Korea, but you can call me Jay." Straightening from his bow, Jay took another peak outside at the Fallen. Grimacing, he once more looked to his fellow party members. "We don't have much time until the instance starts. If this is a dungeon akin to that of a typical RPG or MMO, we'll need to do as our roles are if we want to succeed." he said calmly, placing a hand on the hilt of the Scout's Blade. "Once those doors open," he pointed to Tae. "Miss Tae, you'll need to get the attention of those mutts. Dodge as best as you can, but keep their attention on you. You're the defender." Looking to Solomon he continued. "Doctor Solomon, you're our fighter. I don't know how you intend to deal damage, but do so, even if you have to use your bare hands. Miss Ange, your an acolyte. No matter what, keep your distance from the enemies. Cast spells or summon. I don't care, but just stay safe while you use your skills." Sighing to himself, Jay drew the Scout's Blade with a satisfying noise of metal being pulled from leather. "As for me, I will be helping Doctor Solomon deal damage to the enemies. Any concerns or questions?" he asked.

The timer kept ticking, and as he was waiting for responses, only then did he see the timer hit 0. Before he could hear affirmations, the doors opened and the guy who smelled of cheap alcohol stepped out. Maybe it was instinct, maybe it was something else, but as soon as he did, all four Fallen aggroed onto him. Blinking in surprise, Jay could only blurt out the one thing he could. "That idiot! Some of us might not be ready yet!" Surely he wasn't so stupid to solo tank four enemies that were a level above, when they knew how little the game worked, and it was based off on how they physically moved, and not through a controller or keyboard.

Stumbling, still unused to walking again after not being able to for a year and a half, Jay made his way to the wall besides the open car doors and turned to the rest of his part. "Just stick the plan! Miss Tae grab aggro on two of those mutts, don't let shield guy tank em all! Doctor Solomon, hit em and hit em hard! Miss Ange, do whatever it is you can do skill wise while staying out of danger's range! Be careful, we don't know if we have a healer or what happens if we lose all our HP! GO!"

Leaning against the wall, Jay activated [Sneak] and waited. As soon as the first mutt made it's way towards Arlo, Jay turned the corner and swung as hard as he could with the Scout's Blade. The feeling of steel biting into flesh almost made Jay sick, but he endured as he pulled the blade free, slashing into the Fallen mutt again, hoping to kill at least one before everyone else got involved. If this really was a situation similar to the one shown in SAO; the thought made Jay almost excited. Something to push him further than a competitive game, further than vying for that Rank #1 spot, for the title of best player, the thought almost made him smile. This was a game where it could be his very life on the line.
