Fandom Hunger Games (Closed)

River flicked a few stray pieces of hair from her face before she started to climb further up. She was taking the lead on this one since she was already a branch above everyone else. Now that she was in the tree she felt more relaxed, even though she was high up she still felt a bit safer then when she was on the ground. Although how safe was she really when people were out to kill her but that was beside the point. Maybe she could actually catch up on some much needed rest.

She scaled higher once she saw Lilly safely on the lower branch, and before long she found a branch that suited her. On their way from the hideout she had found some sturdy looking vine, similar to the ones she had used earlier in the games. She had cut a long strand of it, then tying it around her was it like a belt. She then undid the knot, slowly un wrapping herself. She felt herself practically slump into the tree, her limbs felt heavy and she was in no hurry to try and move them.

Before she could start tying herself to the tree, she noticed Finnick holding out a small makeshift canteen. Her dry mouth ached as she reached for it, taking in a long sit of water. She didn't want to take too much, knowing that this had to last them through the night. She also didn't know how far away water might be so it would be safer to conserve as much as they could. "Thanks." She smiled before handing it back.

Gale watched as Lilly was pulled into the tree. He smiled reassuringly, before reaching out towards to help her up. "That wasn't too bad." He gave a throaty laugh before hoisting her up the same way he had helped River. And soon they were all climbing up higher until they felt it was a safe distance from the ground. He was sure no one could see them if they were to walk past the tree, and he settled on a branch close to the rest of them.

Seeing Finnick take his canteen out, Gale followed suit and pulled his out. Taking a small drink, enough to cool him down some, he offered his to Lilly knowing she was probably just as thirsty and worn out as he was. When he settled back into the tree, he could feel it throughout this body a tight nagging ache. It was something he was use to, however it didn't mean he liked it any better. This was a different type of ache, at least at home there was a bed he slept on where he got more than 4 hours of sleep.

But he was alive, he had to keep telling himself that. Hedecided to take his mind off of it and watched Lilly while he waited for her to be done with the canteen. This was a mistake.. every cell in Gales body told him this as they slammed on the brakes trying to claw their way out of the situation and back towards reality. But he continued to look, the sun had filtered in a certain way lighting up her face and the hair around it almost glowed. He couldn't tell if it was the suns doing or had she always looked like this? This was a dangerous thought and he pulled his eyes away hoping no one had caught him staring.

As he handed River the canteen, he smiled a bit and nodded his head to her "No problem" he said, before putting the canteen away when she was finished with it for the time being. Even though their water situation was a bit unstable, meaning they didn't really know how close their next water source would be, and all they would have to go on for who knows how long would be what they had in their small canteens....it was at least good they found the oranges. While they weren't very filling as far as food went, the vitamin c would give them energy, and they were full of juice to hydrate them should they run out of water before they found more.

The next day, he figured they should at least try and locate the closest fresh water source. They had food to last them for a little bit at least, though, if they found more, they certainly shouldn't pass the chance up. For now though, things were pretty alright. They had water, food, and a pretty secure hideout. While it wasn't quite as comfortable as their previous one, where it lacked the comfort, it was a lot more spacious, since the four of them had been a bit cramped in that previous spot.

As he settled back into the tree, the sun had recently set over the horizon leaving them and the rest of those still alive in the games covered in darkness. The night wildlife could be heard coming to life, distant animals, crickets chirping...if they weren't in the games, and the animals weren't ones likely dangerous enough to kill them, it would have almost seemed peaceful. But that was as close to peaceful as it ever really got in the games. He glanced to Lilly and Gale who'd also settled into their own branches, before he reached into the bag and pulled out the medicine, handing it to Lilly "Here, you should put more on to make sure you don't give it a chance to get worse again."

As Lilly got up into the first branch with Finnick's help, she rolled her eyes at Gale's teasing words "Thanks" she rolled her eyes sarcastically in response, though an amused smile on her lips. She shook her head a bit and just continued climbing up the tree, getting to the next higher up branch with Gale's help, unable but to help shoot back his same words back at him "Hey, not too bad" she smirked at him, before she continued to climb further up into the tree where Finnick and River had settled around.

Her leg was certainly protesting to all the heavy pushing of her weight and climbing in the branches, but she ignored it. She was primarily focused on just not bumping or scratching the wound against any of the branches or anything. Thankfully, while it was a tiring climb, she finally reached the same general area that Finnick and River had stopped at, and she found herself another sturdy branch to settle down on, and one that seemed relatively comfortable - as comfortable as a branch could get, anyways.

She glanced to Gale when he offered her the water, and nodded "Thanks" she said, eagerly taking the canteen and taking a mouthful. It was incredibly refreshing, not only hydrating, but again relieving to her still swollen windpipe and neck from earlier. She was unaware to Gale's staring gaze as she took the sip with the setting sun, handing the canteen back to him as the sun fully disappeared over the horizon, and a few minutes later she heard Finnick mentioning the medicine. She nodded, and gratefully took the two bottles. Part of her reluctant to use the first disinfectant one, remembering how much it burned last time, but also knew it would be better to use it as well than not to.

As River settled in for the night, she made sure to double check the vines surrounding her, along with the small amount of belongings that she had. The knife she had luckily found after the fight with the career tribute was safely tucked in her boot. She looked up towards the sky, knowing that theyd see his face again tonight and she pondered the thought of how she'd react. Would she be filled with relief? Dusk was settling in, cooling off the heat of the day just a little. She was quiet for a long time after that, just listening to the nature sounds of the forest - along with Finnick mentioning something to Lilly but the words never making the connection in her mind.

She sat for a long time in a tree, letting her mind flit from one thing to another without any direction until she concentrated on what needed attention. The majority of her survival depended on the unwavering certainty of her instincts, the sureness that at the moment of decision, she was right regardless of the consequences. This was a trait born of years of having to anticipate the hardships that had laid in every corner of her life. It seemed this very trait which ensured her sucess made her completely worthless in the realm of human interaction. This became magnified during the Games, where she went from danger to danger, ready at the smallest provocation to react. Would this wariness ever wear off?

But there were times that it was best to stand and wait, something she was terrible at doing. Finnick seemed to be better at this, being able to sit back and assess the problem at hand. She wasn't sure about Lilly or Gale, but she considered they might be more like her, or maybe even more so. The never ending struggle to survive left a different sort of imprint then not ever knowing these hardships.

As Gale leaned against the trunk of the tree, he realized he was too wired to sleep. His brain running over and over the course of the day without relent. As he laid still he could feel the tension within his muscles, he was physically uncomfortable trying to force himself to sleep that he couldn't actually fall asleep. His muscles cramping in the effort to stay still, that eventually he gave up on the task entirely. He felt himself getting emptier and emptier with every passing moment - maybe he would snuff out like a candle and eventually disappear.

He knew this sleeplessness was a constant companion during the Games, however the exhaustion in ever corner of his body begged for the relief that sleep would bring. The heat of the day was waning now, but he knew the humidity would continue on through the night not helping his current state. All through the forest it was quieting down and soon the creatures of the night would be up and about if not already. A golden glow lit up the entire forest floor bathing everything in its light before receding below the horizon.

The hum of the forest came to life again after so many minutes of silence, he almost found himself huming along before catching himself knowing this was the wrong time to be making any extra noise and his throat still scratchy from dorwning. The feeling of heaviness seemed to retreat slightly at his change in posture. It was as if he had been underwater for too long minutes ago instead of days, his lungs burnt. Lungs sore from disuse, there was relief in being able to breathe. He turned towards Lilly, someone who he had known his whole life but barely knew but strangely now was the only person who understood how he was feeling. "How's your leg?" He asked quietly, knowing the fight must have backtracked the healing process.

After handing Lilly the medicine so she could use it on her leg, he leaned back on his branch. His branch was slightly above and to the side of Lilly's, but not far enough they couldn't reach out and touch hands or something. The same went with his distance from River, who was at about the same height as him up in the tree, though slightly off to his side. It worked out pretty well - while they were all still close enough to each other, between all of them, they had a pretty good look out in every direction from the tree. While, at night, and with all the branches and vines with how high up they were, it was a bit difficult to see anyone or anything should they pass. But in a way, that was only better, as it meant it was only twice as difficult for anyone else passing to see them in the tree. The only way they would really be able to be seen was if others knew that they were in the tree, and looking for them in it.

He was trying to think about what their plan would be for the following day now. Even though the sun had only just set, and this day was barely over, if that, Finnick was always thinking one step ahead, to the next thing, the next obstacle that they might have to overcome. He was the kind of guy that wanted to be prepared, and particularly with his training and experience for the games, he knew never to let his guard down, even as confident as he may act and feel sometimes. He knew that if he was to survive he needed to be a step in front of all the other tributes. He didn't really realize it himself, but at some point he had stopped thinking about himself as a solo in these games, and rather, him and the group he was with - River, Lilly, Gale - as a whole, not just himself.

Relaxing back into the tree a bit, he glanced back over to Lilly, who seemed to be quietly talking with Gale a bit. He managed to catch a glimpse of her injury while it was still unbandaged, and he didn't know why but he was glad it was healing. He knew he shouldn't be....if he wanted to survive, she would just die another time, even if not by the infection. But he found himself glad for these three...friends, if that. He knew he shouldn't think of them that way, and it would only get himself into trouble, but earlier when Lilly and River were attacked by that tribute, he found the thought of their deaths incredibly disturbing - Rivers in particular. He didn't know how he'd let this happen but...he'd become incredibly attached to her. More than that, even...Shaking the thoughts from his head, he sighed softly "I'll take first shift, everyone else should try and get some rest for now, even if you feel like you can't sleep. Who should I wake for next?"

After taking the medicine Finnick offered her, she sat back against the center of the tree while shifting comfortably to be able to get a good angle at her wound. Setting the two bottles carefully in front of her, not wanting them to fall off the branch and to the ground, she made sure they were stable before turning her attention back to her leg and unwrapping the wound. It was still very swollen and raw looking beneath the bandage. However, once she cleaned the dirty and sweat away from it that had gathered from the earlier scuffle with the career tribute, it was noticeably a lot better than before. Unlike the other day before they had received the medicine, the wound was no longer dark and discolored grossly. Rather, even though it was still very swollen and raw, it was a healthy pink color, the infection clearly diminishing with the use of the medicine. That fact and seeing it visibly improving, and so quickly too, made a smile form on Lillian's lips.

She knew this small victory of improvement though meant nothing. Even with her leg completely healed again, she doubted she'd win the games as the last standing victor. And honestly...as much as she didn't want to die...she wasn't so sure she wanted to be the sole survivor of the games. She could tell...already, they were changing her. And she was afraid of what her future would be like, what would become of her mental state, should she somehow miraculously survive. It wouldn't be something she could be happy or proud about. Because her survival meant her involvement on the death of so many others, and that it was their deaths that allowed her to survive....and those deaths would have to include people like Gale and River...even Finnick. She wasn't sure she could stomach the thought of such a reality.

She hadn't realized she had been spacing out staring at her wound, the bottles still in front of her yet for her to use, until she heard Gale's voice speaking up to her, snapping her out of her grim thoughts. She blinked a few times, as she came back to reality and focused, glancing over to Gale "Oh...a lot better, I think. Compared to before anyways" she said with a small smile before looking back to her leg and taking the medicine to apply it. Even though it was significantly healthier looking than before, she still used the disinfectant medicine first, hissing slightly at the pain but bearing with it, before she then applied the cream like one after, which soothed the burning from the alcohol based disinfectant, as well as would continued to help it heal and repair itself. Afterward, she wrapped the would back up, tying the securing knot of the makeshift bandage over the wound. As she finished that up she heard Finnick asking about shifts and what order they should go in, glancing up to him when he asked, she spoke up "I'll take second then."

River remained in her position letting the wholeness of the forest ease her mind, until the sound of Finnick's question drawing her back to consciousness. Her eyelids fluttered a bit, before opening fully. For a moment, a heavy weight pressed at the back of her mind, though she didn't know why she was so depressed - until the fog cleared from her mind, right she was in the games. Destined to kill or be killed. The world around her was dark, but her eyes were quick to adjust as they roamed around her. She could see Finnick's silhouette slightly next to her, his dark figure hovering close by awaiting someone's answer- what did he say again? She squinted a little, trying to see the more details of his face but abandoned the idea almost immediately.

When Lilly's voice floated from her spot, her mind was brought back to the conversation. She realized from the weight of the day it was hard to put effort into putting full focus on one subject for too long. She longed for the sweet emptiness of sleep where her mind could wander freely, however she hoped nightmares wouldn't plague her dreams tonight like the first night here. Her voice was lowered at a whisper, "I can take whenever." She knew her voice was barely auditable, but with everyone within arms reach she near it would reach them.

She shivered slightly but not from being cold, from the shear anticipation of the day radiating off her skin. The constant ache in her side was quiet now, letting her limp body recover. The heat of constant struggle these last few days were seared into every inch of her body, however she was thankful for the sun below the horizon - hopefully the coolness of the night will sooth the bitterness in her muscles. There was a numb pounding in her head, and she sighed heavily as she untwisted the matted down braid piled on her head. The pain eased slightly as her white locks flowed freely over her shoulders - and then she had a strange desire to just hack it all off completely.

Gale saw the smile creep across Lilly's face, and a tension within him wavered. It must not be as bad as he had thought, and with her confirming his thoughts he relaxed a little more against the base of the tree limb. Good, at least that's going in their favor. But was it? Dread itched at the back of his mind. Maybe dying from infection would've been a kinder death- who knows what awaits them now. His earlier relief now battered by a dark cloud. He sighed heavily, trying not to concentrate on anything more than small conversation and the forest. The stars were like luminous pinpricks of silver as they freckled the night sky, and he wondered if he was looking up at the real sky, or if it was designed by the capital.

While trying to find a familar constellation, River's tiny voice filtered after Lilly's signaling she didn't care. He nodded in agreement, even though it was too dark now for anyone to notice. "I can go after Lilly." He said, if he went third then the girls could have a longer stretch of time to sleep instead of two smaller increments. He didn't mind, and he knew they needed more rest than he did. "I'm glad your leg is feeling better." He smiled softly at Lilly, he was glad even though an uneasiness was still lingering.

He settled back into his spot, hoping sleep wouldnt elude him this time. He was in awe of the size and majesty of the trees, their dark figures looming all around. Their knotted arms rose ever upwards, as far as his head could lift. Its woody incense was from centuries of snapping branches crashing to the forest’s floor and rotting silently. He was amazed at how life like this place was and how the game makers were able to capture that scent, if he closed his eyes he could almost pretend he was home.

After bringing up shifts, he nodded his head lightly in understanding when Lilly offered to go after him, but then he realized it was a bit dark and she wasn't looking his way exactly, so he spoke up "Alright." It wasn't much longer after that the rest of the order was decided, with River taking the last shift. He was kind of glad, since that meant she'd have a long time to rest up and sleep through the night without having to be woken up and going back to sleep or anything. He didn't know when he had started to care so much for her personally, but he really was worried about her health and well-being.

Just glancing at her now, she was close enough that he could see her with his eyes adjusted to the darkness, and he could see how exhausted she was. It wasn't really a surprise though...he'd lost count of what day they were on in the games, but it was starting to wear rough on all of them. It was at this point that tributes were really exhausted to the bone, and it was also depending on how many survivors there still were that the game makers equally got desperate for more drama, blood, and death. They didn't really like it when too many people were surviving for too long. Which meant they would only get harder with their tricks they had to force the tributes to encounter dangers, or even encounter each other and end up fighting.

He was spacing out for a bit, wondering what the next day would bring. What would they be fighting for their lives from tomorrow? Would it be the elements? Food? More tricks from the game makers? Or other tributes? There were just too many variables that the odds were they were bound to run into one of them. He snapped out of his thoughts when he realized Lilly was handing back the medical supplies to put in the bag he had, and he took them before glancing back to River "Did you want to put any on? Or are you good?" he asked her.

As she finished putting on the cream and everything, Lilly set the small containers to the side, where she then took the trip of fabric she'd been using as a bandage and wrapped his back up and around her leg and the wound, after, brushing off as much dirt and debris from it as possible. Thankfully, the cream acted as also a sort of protective layer so even with the dirty cloth being her bandage, it likely wouldn't infect the wound again or anything, especially now with the medicine and how it was all doing well from since she'd started applying the medicine to it.

Finishing, she handed the supplies back up to Finnick, nudging his leg that he had draped hanging loosely off the side of the branch he sat on when she noticed she hadn't caught his attention. "Pass it to River if she wants some. It might be a good idea" she suggested. She was closer in reaching distance to Finnick than she was to River, hence why she passed it to him to give to her rather than giving it to her herself, if she did want to use any of it. She then leaned back again comfortably against the center of the tree where the branch she sat on attached to it, glancing over to Gale when he mentioned being glad her leg seemed to be healing. She smiled a bit, and nodded her head lightly "Me too..." she agreed softly.

But was she really? She honestly wasn't sure anymore. Sure it was nice that her leg wasn't in as much pain as it was before - she could actually put some weight on it now without crumpling to the floor in pain under the pressure on her injury. But she had to wonder was it worth surviving that? It wasn't the first time Lilly had contemplated actually just offing herself. At least then she would know when to expect her death, how it would go, and what it would be like as best she could know, rather than being jumped by a tribute at any given point or something. And with the very, incredibly unlikely possibility that she somehow miraculously won these games...that would mean everyone else would be dead, and she honestly wasn't sure she could be happy about winning at that point, or having survived it all. Sighing a bit, she closed her eyes a bit "I'll be getting to sleep then. Wake me up when you get too tired, Finnick" she said as she shifted a bit on the branch, trying to get as comfortable as possible before she would fall asleep.

(Unless you have anything in particular you want to do during the night, it's fine if you want to skip to the next morning. Or if not that's fine too! Just wanted to let you know in case you wanted to)

River was glad that she had accepted the medicine from Finnick, she had almost declined thinking they'd need to save it for another time. But her throbbing side would've made it impossible to sleep and they were all aware of the possibility of infection if left untreated. An image of Lilly's leg flashed in her mind right before she swiped the bottle from Finnick. Now the pain in her side was weak, and her head lulled against the back of the tree - and she stayed that way until she heard the early buzz of the morning starting to begin. A white glow laid over the forest floor, that exact moment when the sun is about to peek over the horizon and River held her breath as the burnt yellow rays flowed over, engulfing her frail body with harsher light.

She knew she should wake them all up soon, they needed to gather more supplies since part of theirs was destoryed yesterday. A dry ache scratched at her throat, reminding her to get water soon - but as soon as she leaned closer to Finnick she hesitated. The worry lines in his face were smoothed out, and his hair fell slightly in his face. She had never noticed this side of Finnick, one that wasn't hard pressed with stress or fear. Though she had been sleeping next to him throughout the entirety of the games she hadn't made it a habit to observe him this way. Why are you staring? She snapped her eyes away and decided to let them all rest awhile longer, she had had a fitless sleep and was well rested enough to keep watch.

In the light she was able to inspect herself a little better. Her side was indeed healing nicely, a soft pink instead of the brunt red from where the fire had licked her skin - making it resemble something that had been chewed at by a smaller animal. She saw movement in the corner of her eye below her and instinctively reached for her knife. However it was only Gale and she relax a bit - Geez calm down, she muttered to herself. Apparently the restful hours of sleep didn't help calm her apprehension. Smirking a little as she leaned back, sheer confusion crossed his face. She wondered if he'd go back to sleep right away, but once it was clear that he was fully awake she spoke up.

Gale awoke to the light filtering in through the trees on his closed eyelids. Was it morning? It seemed brighter than what he was accustomed to, and when he cracked open a eye he saw the sun towering slightly above the horizon. He sighed, it wasn't as late as he had originally thought but usually they were up by first light and setting off through the forest by now. "Don't worry, it's only been an hour." He turned his head towards the voice -River was slightly above him looking out over the forest. She hadn't even looked down at him, but knew exactly what he had been thinking. "There was nothing exciting going on, so I thought I'd let you all sleep." She smiled, finally darting her eyes over to him before returning them upwards.

He was about to say something about not needing to sleep when a tinge of red caught his gaze. It was Lilly who seemed to still be, hopefully, sleeping soundly close by. He realized then why River had put off waking them up, and he kept his earlier comment to himself. He was slightly glad to have the extra hour, it was hard for him to fall back asleep the second time. His mind buzzing with different scenarios of the day ahead, and different strategies he needed to remember. Tension from being on high alert during his watch crept through his body. But he knew it went beyond that, he was glad for Lilly as well. He had found himself more and more attuned to her as the games continued - at first it had felt like a brotherly connection. He had many siblings, all younger than he was so it was a feeling that came naturally with him and one he was accepting of.

But now if felt a little off, like the older sibling feeling wasn't quite right. If he weren't in the games he might have tried to put more thought into it, yet this was his fate and he didn't want to put much thought into anything that wasn't survival based, however he couldnt stop the fleeting thought of how pretty she looked right then in the early morning light. He turned his back towards the tree again, copying River's position and the two of the sat in silence for awhile longer as they waited for their companions to wake.

Finnick noticed River seeming to contemplate if she wanted the medicine for half a second, and he was about to recommend she use it, before she suddenly took it from him. He smirked a bit in amusement, but didn't say anything, letting her apply the medicine before he put it back in the bag he carried once she was done with it. Shifting a bit to sit up more straight, but getting comfortable, he spoke up "You should all go ahead and get some sleep now" he suggested. As hard as sleep was to come by in these games, it was vital to keeping alert and staying alive. And the fact that they had a four-man group, it allowed all of them to get a decent about of hours of sleep through the night. And unlike a lot of alliances or groups that formed in these games, Finnick knew he could trust these three not to kill him or any one in their group during their sleep.

When the next morning came around, Finnick had been exhausted and slept a lot longer and harder than he would have thought possible for him in the games. Even as the sun started to rise, he had yet to wake up. Despite having been on first watch, it was like his body was taking all the allowed time to rest up that he could. Once the sun hit a certain level in the morning sky though, he broke through the leaves in an angle to hit directly on his face, stirring him from his slumber. He shifted in his sleep - though not too much since he was still aware he was on a tree branch, and his eyes cracked open as he rubbed his face.

As he moved to sit up, he realized that everyone else was awake, which surprised him a bit. He would have thought he would have been the first to wake up - aside from River of course, since she had been last on watch. He noticed the height of the sun on the sky as well, and while it wasn't too late in the morning or anything, it was still later than he was used to them getting up and moving for the day "You could have woken me up" he suggested, though the tone in his voice showing that he wasn't bothered by the fact it was a little later or anything like that.

It didn't take long for Lilly to fall asleep that night. Especially knowing that she had next shift so it would be in about three hours that Finnick would be waking her, she was ready to go to sleep the sooner, since then it would be longer. Not that she minded taking second shift of course, she had offered herself to take it. She honestly preferred going earlier in the night than in the morning before waking up. She found it just felt harder on her body the following day - though it was more of a mental thing than anything, she knew. Of course, she would take later shifts too if anyone ever wanted to switch them around or anything.

Come the next morning, she woke up by herself, being a light sleeper in general - especially during the games - and she woke up to the slightly increased movement and shuffling coming from River and Gale when he'd woken up. It was probably about ten or so minutes after he'd woken up that she did as well. She as well took note of the fact it was later in the morning than they usually all were awake by, but she didn't mind or care, and didn't wake up. It's not like there was any need to really get moving at certain times - unless they were immediately under attack or something like that and had to.

When Finnick had woken up, she figured he'd be the one to mention the time and getting up earlier, since he was the more experienced and often took more of the leader, lets-go kind of attitude. But he was more laid back about it than she had been expecting, and she just shrugged her shoulders at his comment "It's not like we're in a rush" she commented before she stretched herself out and got up from her branch "Since you're up though, might as well move around. I don't know about all of you but sleeping on a branch was pretty uncomfortable" she muttered, feeling all her muscles and bones ache from stiffness of the awkward position. She then started to make her way down the tree, being the lowest out of all of them on the branches, so she headed down first. She landed with her weight on her single good leg as to not jump down on her bad one, and she glanced around silently, seeing that the coast seemed clear for the time being.

River laughed when she saw Finnick notice he was the last to wake. "And ruin your precious beauty sleep?" She teased before unwrapping the vines around her. River had slept soundly throughout the night. Better than she thought she would. Then again she was exhausted from the day before. The stress had taken a lot out of her. When she awoke, although she was not in as much physical pain she still felt rather weak. It was clear that she was quite emotionally drained but that was to be expected. She had to agree with Lilly, the left side of her body had gotten numb at some point and no matter how many times she tried shifting it was no help.

Stretching out her muscles she waited until Lilly had enough time to climb down the tree and thankfully is seemed like the area was secure. She steadied her footwork on the branches below her, making sure not to slip and break her neck - although that did seem a bit anticlimactic wouldn't you think? She rolled her eyes inwardly at the thought before finally settling down on the ground safely. They needed a plan all this wandering around left them vulnerable, and susceptible to more attacks. Although the more scary thought that no where was completely safe.

Rubbing the sleep from her eyes, the ache in her throat clawed at her making her cough fiercely. Although she knew it had to do with lack of water, she knew the damage to her lungs from the fire hadn't completely disappeared and she longed for the coolness to relieve the pain. "Come on ladies." She laughed at the two remaining guys in the tree. She didn't know why, but she was in a good mood today and she realized how comfortable she was getting in their presence - but with that a dark feeling pricked at her mind. She knew this was dangerous, and she had to remember not to let her guard down.

Gale rolled his eyes at the girl's comment. "I'm definitely a man thank you." He joked back before making his way down the remaining branches between him and the ground. The tension from ealier had eased a little, but his muscles still burned from overuse. He vaguely wondered if any of the other groups were having these problems, but figured either they were holed up somewhere in a large group barely lifting a finger, or they were in a similar situation. While the careers did had advances in training, they didn't know the hardships of an overworked body. His muscles protested every step he took, but he pushed downward still, knowing they needed to move.

"Riiight, you look very manly in that tree right now." He heard the laughter in her voice and if he wasn't scaling the side of a tree right now he would've come up with something better to say. Finally stepping down, he saw the smirk laid across River's face - his only response being a dramatic eye roll, before scanning the arena giving in a second look over. It didn't seem like there was any immediate threat, no footprints around except their own and from all his years tracking he knew the signs and what to look for.

"Okay, I think first thing is we should find our way back towards the river and fill up the canteens." As much as he wanted to head straight out and find shelter, in this humidity they wouldn't last long without it - having to stop too often to rest which would put them at risk. Maybe they could come up with a plan along the way, he knew soon the game makers would get bored and put something together to liven up their show. He could only hope the careers were making enough happen to go on and keep themselves and the capital occupied. He pulled an arm behind his back, popping it back trying to make it feel like he happen just slept sitting up on a branch.

Hearing River's remark to him about not wanting to interrupt his beauty sleep, he scoffed a bit "Please, I'm beautiful enough even without sleep" he joked right back, unable to help but grin a bit in amusement as he glanced in River's direction. It was an odd change, to hear her joking and laughing. Actually....he wasn't sure if he had heard her laugh before. Obviously, the only time he'd really been able to start to get to know her was during the process of these games...and that certainly provided no reasons for laughter, but still. It was a nice change, and he couldn't help but smile as he glanced in her direction as she joked at him. Even if it was directed at him, it was a nice change to see in her. He only could hope it would last.

As Lilly had mentioned them getting to move and stretch out as well as get on with the day, he had to agree, and it seemed everyone else did. If not eager to move and get more resources and more secure, then it was reason enough to be eager to just get out of that tree. As he got up and started to descend the tree, he scoffed with a roll of his eyes at River's comment - another joke, and he smiled a bit "Well at least someone is in a good mood" he smiled, not even finding it in him to have anything back to say to her comments, enjoying seeing this side of her too much and not wanting to chance ending it. Aside from it being a good feeling to see River smiling and laughing a bit...it was good for all of them to be a bit more lighthearted. Though they'd still have to keep their guard up of course.

As his feet hit the ground with a light thud, he reached his arms above his head, stretching them out and rolling his shoulders a bit, feeling some muscles and bones shift and pop in discomfort from the stiff night. "Well, I think it's safe for me to assume we can all agree on finding something other than a tree to sleep in tonight" he commented as he finished rolling his muscles out, figuring he loosened them as much as they would for the time being. Hearing Gale's comment about water, he nodded his head in agreement "That's a good idea. And River, Lilly, if you two are good enough to walk around more today, we should probably try and avoid splitting up again" he said. He knew yesterday they'd only done it because the girls were unable of walking - Lilly quite literally couldn't - and River had been too injured to risk seriously opening up that wound on her side again.

Lilly had to admit River's lighthearted humor of the morning was a welcomed thing among the group. It was nice to just feel like this was all somewhat normal, even if just for a little while. She smiled a bit, before unable to hold back a laugh of her own at Finnick's reply to River regarding his 'beauty sleep'. She smiled a bit to herself and shook her head as she began to climb down the tree first, as she was the lowest in the tree of all of them, and she hit the ground lightly. While her leg was feeling a lot better in comparison to the other day, she knew she still had to be mindful of it and not overwork the injury just because she was starting to get her strength and energy back in it. Though, it was hard not to feel hopeful and a bit energetic at the fact she was healing and getting better.

She didn't dwell on the thought of her injury for too long however, as she stood on the ground and walked around the tree, her eyes scanning the area with the morning sunlight and glad to not see a trace of any other tributes - or just any other threats at all for that matter, considering they were all more than aware by now that tributes weren't the only thing they had to worry about in these games. She turned her attention back to the boys in the tree when River made another joke, calling them girls, and giggled a bit, unable to help but to chime in a bit herself "Yeah, you two better be careful. Wouldn't want you to break a nail or something" she smirked a bit in amusement just as Gale reached the ground, and a few seconds after him Finnick joined them on the ground.

It seemed they were already off to a good start and agreement on the morning plans - first finding water. She was sure all of them were thirsty, and it would be good to get water before the sun got too high in the sky and caused the humidity to really kick in. As they began walking in the direction of the river, she nodded in agreement to Finnick's words regarding where they would stay tonight "Yeah. Joking aside though, I think after water we should focus on shelter for the night. We still have enough fruit for now. If we see food while looking for shelter, that's even better though."

River was glad to see that the mood was light this morning, she had spent enough days in a consuming darkness to last her a lifetime and now was starting to become herself again - even if there was barely anything left. She had always been a wallflower, but not in personalilty. Mostly she just felt comfortable being alone, and she didn't have much spare time anyways. She did however spend most of her time with her brother, who was more of the outgoing one and could always make her come out of her shell a little - and she realized Finnick had similar traits. Outgoing and personable were definitely his thing and it seemed to be infectious. It was an odd sensation to laugh freely with the group, but she welcomed it anyways greatful for the brief relief from reality.

River turned glance at Finnick after his comment, "Yeah, that would be best." Although splitting up had been a reasonable decision, it had left her and Lilly at risk and they ended up paying for it. She stretched a little showing that she was well enough to keep up, and looked towards Lilly to make sure she was okay too. The gash on her leg definitely had improved, and River was secretly glad to have everyone healthy enough for the journey today.. and unlike yesterday they didn't have a place to hide out in yet.

She inhaled the natural sent of the forest, stretching her fingers out towards the sky before moving and following Gale to the trail back to the river. She kept her eyes trained, and her ears open for any sound that didn't match the normal rhythm and hum of the underbrush. A pair of jays were screeching high up in the canopy of the trees, their cruel, corvid eyes always on the lookout for a meal. The morning stars peeped down at them, almost vanishing from the suns harsh rays. They looked happy in their solar-silver isolation, and River couldn't help the feeling of jealous wafting over her. She wondered how many cameras were aimed at them right now, watching their every move.
~
Gale shot Lilly the best 'don't mess with me' look before bellowing out a laugh. Shaking his head at the two girls comments he moved towards Lilly, playfully ruffling her hair. He couldn't remember the last time he had truly laughed during the Games, and the sick hopeless ones didn't count. He started to feel lighter this morning, the tension easing even more. "Alright, let's definitely keep a look out for possible shelters." He nodded in agreement, before following the familar markers down the trail. It was spirit refreshing to smell the mulchy mix of the forest’s perfume.

Briars and brambles flanked parts of the trail, making it impenetrable in some places. He couldn't remember how long they had gone down the path away from the water. He did however know staying near the river would mark their early graves. Some careers hunted at night, he guessed they found more pleasure in it that way as if killing untrained children wasn't enough. They wanted to add a challenge because that's all the games were to them - just one big joke. Feeding the capitals egos and showing off like that earned respect.

Leaves crunched under his boots, snapping twigs with the force of his weight. Coming to a fallen tree in the path that he didn't recall from last night, he eyed it suspiously. Sure it looked seemingly harmless, but Gale's skillful eyes could detect the unnatural fall of this tree - and he had seen many in the woods growing up. "Careful, the game makers have been here." He stepped aside holding out a hand to help Lilly over. Although her leg was on the upswing, he didn't want her to push it too far.. and he couldn't shake the feeling of wanting to make sure she was safe.

After suggesting they should all probably stick together for the time being, Finnick was glad none of them seemed to have complaints about it. He didn't think anyone would, especially after what happened yesterday when they had split up, even if just for a short amount of time. He didn't want to take the chance of something like that happening again, and any of them getting into danger - especially River. He recalled the rush of fear that coursed him yesterday, even from the moment of hearing the girls scream, the way his heart dropped in his stomach, just thinking about them getting killed. The thought was particularly disturbing to him with River. Sure, he cared about Lilly's well-being as well, and he'd come to consider her a close ally - a friend, even, perhaps. But he knew River was different. Or more so, how he felt about her was different.

Finnick wasn't an idiot and blind to his own emotions. But in times like these, he wished he was. He knew it was a danger to care for anyone in the games more than just on an ally-level of caring. But especially the way he had come to care about River. The fear he felt for her any moment he thought she was in danger, it was sickening. And all while he knew this wasn't good, and he should throw these feelings away for his own good, he couldn't, nor could he bring himself to care. And aside of the feelings he'd grown to have for River...he also cherished them in a different way. Because they were just another small sign to him that he was still human - that these games hadn't completely turned him into a monster or anything, like they often did to the tributes. It was proof that he still had his humanity, something many tributes easily lost in these games.

He was suddenly brought out of his thoughts when Gale spoke up about the fallen tree before them. He hadn't realized until that moment that he'd been staring at River probably for the past several minutes while off in thought. Thankfully, it appeared no one else had noticed either. Except for possibly any cameras that may have been watching them and thus anyone watching those cameras - but that thought didn't occur to him in that moment. Watching Gale help Lilly over the tree, he smirked a bit, deciding to keep up the lightness of the morning jokes as he climbed up onto the tree, holding a hand down to River to help her up as well "Shall we, m'lady?" he smirked. Joking aside though, he knew she was still recovering from her injury as well and didn't want her tearing it open more or anything by trying to climb over the log when he could easily just help her.

Maybe it wasn't smart for them to all be getting this close to each other...but Lilly couldn't help but like the feeling. It was one of those sort of love-hate relationships. It was great to have people she could consider friends in times like these. People she could joke with and be friendly, that she could relax even just a little around - people she knew weren't about to stab her in the back, quite literally. It gave her this sense of normalcy...the one thing that was keeping her sane in these games. On the other hand however, she didn't want to think of what this would all come to.

One way or another, she was going to lose these people she had started to care about, to consider friends. Either they would be killed, or she would be. And she didn't even want to think of what would happen if it was left with just the four of them being the sole survivors at the end. What would happen then? She already knew she wouldn't be able to bring herself to kill any of them. For now though, she didn't think about all of that. She just thought about how great it felt right now in this moment, this lighthearted, joking atmosphere between all of them. Maybe she was living in denial, just focusing on this and not the reality this would probably all have to come to. But she didn't care, she preferred it this way.

She knew she cared more about these three than she should have let herself, especially in that moment when Gale playfully ruffled her hair. In that moment she felt an unfamiliar tightness in her chest...Shaking it off though, she knew she shouldn't think too much about it - even though these games provided a lot of time for nothing but thinking. With that, she and the group headed on through the forest, onto their first destination of water - then shelter. As they passed the large tree in their path, she took Gale's hand when it was offered to her, thanking him as she climbed over the fallen tree with his help, before they all continued on, nearing the river as the sounds of running water could start to be heard.

She followed Gale's lead for awhile, not really thinking about anything in specific but she enjoyed the peaceful silence for a few mintues. When they came to a tree in the road, she saw what Gale had meant, it looked like the tree had been sawed off by something - definitely by machine. She ran her hand along the marks wondering what the game makers were up to until Finnick pulled her attention away. She raised an eyebrow at his comment, before releasing a wide grin. She enjoyed his silly nature and she fell right into it easily. As much as she knew the risks, she couldn't stop herself from growing closer to this group..

"Why thank you good sir." She copied his accent, although horribly, and gripped his hand before going up and over the fallen trunk. A tingling sensation pricked at her hand, making her pull her eyebrows together in thought. Well that was definitely something she wasn't use to, and when she looked up at Finnick catching his eye she couldn't stop the thud of her heart start to quicken. Why was his touch so uncomfortable to her now? And not uncomfortable in a bad way.. She shook her head pulling herself out of whatever weirdness she had just been in, and released Finnick grasp - she hadn't realized she had probably been holding onto it longer than normal. Get a grip.. She sucked in a breath before following Lilly and Gale towards the sound of rushing water.

Seeing the water she could've almost cried right then and there. She dropped to her knees cupping her hands in the icy liquid letting it run over her heated skin before bringing it to her lips. The same mud caked into her suit again around her knees but she couldn't bring herself to care. Thankfully this part of the river was more of a stream, running but not so fast that she feared falling in. In fact after filling up her canteen, she jumped to her feet stepping into the shallow stream. The clear water ran over her toes, and she did a happy half jump kicking water up over the muddy bank towards Finnick.
~
Gale squeezed Lilly's hand slightly before releasing it, holding his arm out motioning for her to take the lead. He knew once he did it he couldn't take it back, but he figured it was harmless enough. They all had already crossed a line, or were at least dancing dangerously on it. Even though he lacked hope of living to an old age, he realized he'd rather spend his last few days not completely a wreck - spending it with people he enjoyed being around maybe being content even.. if that was possible, even if these moments were short lived. It made him feel more alive, and knew it was better than dying in despair all alone.

A part of him still didn't want to give this group his trust, he knew that was a foolish action but he couldn't help doing just that. He was beginning to rely on them, not only as allies but as friends. He walked behind Lilly thinking of the last few days here with her, they had been through so much within such a short amount of time. He had lost track of the days since they got here plus the week they spent training. Even he couldn't ignore the kind of bond they shared; even though he wanted to bury it or at least knew he should ignore it. He looked down at her leg, without getting a great look at it, and he knew it was much better than before. She had almost died.. in fact they both almost died that day with the poison fog and he felt bile raise in his throat.

He was perturbed by the thought of her dying, more so than he would've thought. Of course he didn't want her to die, he didn't want any of them to die but he knew it was more than that. He remembered telling himself last night that this wasn't the time or place, that he couldn't spend time thinking in depth about his changed feelings because he knew what the outcome would be - destruction. There was nothing good that would come out of feelings that were more then just alliances here and even that was a stretch. Maybe he just needed water to think more clearly, hopefully snap him out of this, he thought before going about checking the surrounding area around the muddy bank.

Seeing the grin spread across the lips might be the only thing keeping this fight worthwhile for Finnick. The first week he'd known her before the games started, during training, and interviews, and all of that, she had been quiet and reserved. Even the first few days of the games as they teamed up, she hadn't trusted him, and even so much so as to ditch him at one point because of that. He of course didn't blame her for any of it - it was smart, how she thought then, not trusting anyone. But seeing her open up to him like this, joking with him, and smiling...it was an incredible sight. He'd always been popular with girls - many always flirted with him, tried to get his attention, but River was the only one that seemed to have gotten his attention to this extent.

Maybe it was because she wasn't like the other girls - she hadn't flirted with him, tried to get on his good side, or anything like that. Granted - circumstances were different considering they were entering the games together, but still. He'd like to say he was glad that of all the girls River was the one he entered the games with. But that wasn't true. Because as much as he loved getting to know her, to become this friendly with her that it almost made it seem like everything was going to be okay...it also meant she was in the games with him. And it was because of that fact he wished it wasn't her - because then she wouldn't have to suffer any of these horrors, or very possibly death.

Shaking the thoughts from his head, he continued on to the group until they reached the water. He watched River run out to the water in relief - and as much as he wanted to do the same, his worry kicked in as he instantly looked around their surroundings for anyone else. The main water source in any Hunger Game was often a large source conflict as well. He was scanning their surroundings until satisfied no one else was around them, when he was snapped out of his seriousness and alertness to their surroundings by the cold and refreshing water splashing him. He flinched a bit in surprise, looking over at River in awe, before a grin spread over his lips "Oh, so that's how it is?" he teased, before quickly joining her standing in the water and splashing her back.

As Gale had helped her over the fallen tree, she didn't miss the slight squeeze to her hand, and with it, felt her heart skip a beat or two. She kept herself composed however, despite this new feeling in her chest, as if her heart was being constricted with that tightened grasp on her hand. She bit the inside of her cheek to calm herself down, smiling to Gale as she thanked him for the help and continued on, taking the lead as Gale motioned for her. She continued walking in the direction of the river, hearing it as they neared closer to it and following the sound of the rushing water while keeping an eye out around them for anyone else also making a water-stop.

The humidity of the rain forest was just starting to kick in when they made it to the river, a calmer side of it apparently, much to Lilly's relief. She still hadn't forgotten the moment in which she and Gale almost drowned and died because of this same river - only at a different location in it. Granted it kind of had been a choice to jump in the water, but....well the other option was the poison gas. Thankfully in the end it worked out, as they didn't drown, and it lead to River and Finnick saving them and teaming up with them. But it wasn't something Lilly forgot, the feeling of being awake and desperately trying to breath in, lungs burning for air, only to be filled with water.

She shook the thoughts from her mind, heading over to the waters edge once it appeared they were in the clear and safe for the time being. She was parched, and wasn't going to waste a moment of getting water, not knowing when they next would. She knelt down in the muddy edge, cupping water in her hands and eagerly drinking it, resisting the urge to just dunk her face into the stream and drink that way. After taking several huge gulps, she moved to sit down, stretching her leg out where she untied her bandage on her leg, going to clean it off in the water along with her wound. She was caught off guard when a large stray splash hit her from the two playing in the water, causing her to gasp out, before it turned into a laugh "Hey! Watch it" she laughed.

River grinned like a cat who caught a mouse when Finnick looked towards her. He had been so serious searching the surroundings for possible threats, even with the four of them all there to defend eachother. She knew there was no immediate danger after the first 5 minutes, however she could tell he was on high alert as he continued to spot check every corner. She had almost forgotten he was trained to do this, that he had lived through these games before so of course he wanted to be thorough - but that didn't mean she liked seeing him so uneased.

She bit her lip, looking around like she didn't know what he was talking about. "Woah, where did that come from?" She smirked teasingly before giving a small shriek as Finnick jumped into the water with her. She splashed back hard, kicking up water with her legs, however her tiny frame was no match for Finnick's oversized one that before she knew it she was drenched in water. Thankfully they had been given suits to wear so she didn't have to worry about wet clothes scraping against her all day. But at that moment she wouldn't have cared if she was in a three piece suit.

Hearing a small gasp she whipped her head over towards Lilly who was sitting by the bank cleaning her wound. At first River couldn't tell if she was mad or not, but after hearing her laugh she saw her new friend was in good spirits and she returned her smile. She knew she probably looked like a mad woman, soggy hair stuck to her face but it's not like she was trying to win a beauty pagent out here anyways. Turning towards Finnick giving him the best 'look what you've done now' look. "You got us in trouble." She teased trying to stay in character but her smile giving herself away. She flung her hair back with both hands trying to get it unstuck from her face and neck and ready to be braided once she got out.
~
Gale continued searching the area when they first approached the river bed. They could never be too careful, and as he was more than happy to let Lilly and River relax some as he followed Finnick actions and took to scoping out the perimeter. He knew there were still plenty of tributes out there, even one was a threat, but since the weaker ones had already been cut out he knew it was mainly large career groups. Maybe one or two tributes hiding out as their master plan to win this. But thankfully careers weren't always the quietest, or quick to cover their tracks so that would be an advange..

He was brought out of his thoughts when Finnick made a move for the water. Gale could only shake his head at the two in the river and for a minute, as he came to sit by Lilly, it was almost real - like they were just out going swimming for the day instead of being in the games. He tried not to let the melancholy set in, and distracted himself by seeing what Lilly was doing. Seeing her cleaning off her leg, he smiled encouragingly as he sat back on his elbows looking out towards the water. He soaked in the serenity of the moment, not knowing if it was the last time he'd feel like this. He tilted his head back to stare at the clouds that hung limply in the air. The heat of the day was already climbing to an all time high, baking into every pore in his body and he made sure to keep his feet dangling into the water to keep himself cool.

He hadn't even noticed his eyes were closed until water was being launched on him and Lilly, chilling his legs slightly. Lilly's laugh released a tightness that had welled up in his body from being on high alert. It was soft and musical, almost infectious as he couldn't help the smile tug at the corner of his lips. "Behave yourself children." Gale joked, before grinning up at Lilly and shaking his head. "What are we going to do with them." He teased before resuming back to his spot before being interrupted. He was glad for this break even though this same river had tried to kill him and Lilly, and if he never saw another large body of water again he wouldn't be anything less than thrilled.

Jumping into the water with River, he splashed the girl back and smirked a bit at her reaction as she continued to try and win in this sort of water war they started with each other. His legs were a lot stronger, and a lot thicker than hers though, and with her petite body he was able to easily drench her within just a few splashes. Though that didn't mean he didn't equally get soaked. By the end of it, he found himself laughing. Not just a short chuckle or anything, but full on laughing. Despite being a pretty carefree sort of guy, even outside the games, he couldn't remember a time he'd laughed this much. Ever since the first games he was in, while he kept up a good front for his district and the capitol, and while he had survived those games, a lot of him felt like it had died in them. But in this moment, he felt more himself than he had in a long time.

As they were scolded at lightly by Lilly, he paused in his actions, a sheepish grin on his face as River had turned to him and scolded him for getting them in trouble. Which they weren't really, of course, and Lilly hardly looked mad at all. Looking over to River, he just shrugged his shoulders a bit "You started it" he pointed out childishly with an impish grin. And of course, having too much fun and wanting to mess with her just a bit more, he suddenly kicked her legs out from under her - gently, of course, as to not hurt her - and dragged her down into the water with him where he had ended up sitting in, and he pulled her down dunking her into the water.

He hadn't realized at first how close he had pulled her down against him, or the fact he was holding her where she ended up on his lap from the fall. It didn't take long for him to notice though, as his laughter died down, and he started to realize how close they were. He felt his chest constrict a bit as he seemed to freeze, staring at River, before he finally collected himself after a minute, and cleared his throat awkwardly as he loosened his grip on her so she could get up if she wanted.
~
Lilly just smiled a bit as Finnick and River just looked at her when she yelled at them playfully, and she laughed a bit at their expression thinking for a moment she was actually upset at them. Though her laughter seemed to instantly relax them and show she wasn't upset, as did her smile at them, and she just shook her head a bit "You two are children" she smiled in amusement, agreeing with Gale as he made a similar comment about them being children and to behave.

Laughing a bit, she shook her head at his comment "Right?" she agreed with him "We can't take them anywhere can we?" she joked lightly as she turned her attention back to scrubbing out the ripped cloth the best she could. Over the days, it had gotten stained with blood, sweat and dirt, but she cleaned it out the best it could get, before she then finished cleaning out the wound, hissing a bit lightly in pain as she scrubbed at it, though knew to bear with it since she wanted to make sure it didn't get infected again. After cleaning it out, she applied a little more of the medicine to it, since Finnick had set the bag down by the side of the water on the ground, and then she securely wrapped the wound back up.

Taking a moment to relax herself, she leaned back on her hands with her feet dangling in the cool water. Smiling a bit to herself she watched Finnick and River continued to mess around in the water, and couldn't help but feel at ease, and relaxed. Seeing them, and being able to relax like this, it was like they weren't in the middle of the Hunger Games, fighting for their lives. It was like they were normal teenagers, enjoying life. She smirked a bit, noticing things seem to get a bit awkward between the two, and she left them be, instead her eyes turning to look to Gale, who seemed to be doing his own relaxing with his eyes closed. She didn't realize that she found herself staring at him, or more like gazing, as she admired the actually peaceful look on his face for once. With the peaceful atmosphere around them, and the sun filtering in through the tress and hitting Gale's face, she couldn't help but admire just how attractive he really was.

Sticking her tongue out in her own childish effort when hearing Finnick's comment about her being the one who started it - though that may have been true she definitely wasn't going to give him that satisfaction. But she had to admit even being soaked from head to foot, she couldn't stop the constant smile during their water fight. Sure he was like twice her size, but he had come out just as drenched as she had and she silently beamed with satisfaction at her work. The muscles around her stomach burned from the amount of laughter, knowing it had gone unused for years.

She hadn't noticed what she had been missing, she had spent her entire life working hard and getting through the day with her head down with as little attention brought on her as possible. Not that she had minded at the time, that was just her life and she was use to it, but now she was feeling more alive than she had ever remembered feeling. She hated the fact that she had to come to the games to finally feel something, and even though she was glad to have met Finnick she would rather he not be stuck in the arena with her. She was pulled from her thoughts as Gale's voice rang out about her being compared to a child, then shortly Lilly also mentioning something about her and Finnick being children and she scoffed playfully crossing her arms in front of her chest.

She was about to bark out some snide comment back, when she felt her legs give out as something kicked at them. She squieked in surprise as she tumbled down into the water landing ontop of something hard - not her giving her enough response time as her head sank below the surface. "Oh no you didn't.." She gasped finally coming up for fresh air; however she hesitated in her playful scolding to realize the compromising position she was in. She was practically straddling his lap, and her face heated with embarrassment as she stared back at Finnick. He was so close she could hardly think straight, smelling like fresh water and the forest it was almost intoxicating. She held his gaze, knowing it'd be almost impossible to break and she couldn't stop the ache that creeped into her heart. But almost too soon after, Finnick cleared his throat and River blinked several times as the spell was broken giving her a chance to sit back on her heels. "Uh.." Yeah, like what could she possibly say now.
~
After hearing Lilly agree with him about them being children and not knowing what to do with them, he sighed shaking his head playfully as a disappointed parent might do to a badly behaved child. He realized they needed these moments, even though he knew the closer he got to Lilly the harder it would be to see something happen to her, even the mere thought made him sick inside - but these moments kept them sane, they kept them from falling off the deep end losing their humanity even. He had seen it too many times to count during past year games, a tribute losing the last of himself.. it was almost too hard to watch. He wished he lived a different life, one that didnt enolve the games, one that didn't have the hate that ruled their country.. if that was even possible.

He cringed slightly at the sound of Lilly hissing in pain, even though he knew she was fine he hated the though of her being in pain. He rubbed her shoulder closest to him hoping to be supportive, even if it didn't help, before sitting back in his position. He watched Lilly work at cleaning off her leg, getting a better angle to look at her. No one feature made Gale favor it over another, though her eyes come close. People often spoke of the color of eyes, as if that were of importance, yet hers would be beautiful in any shade. From them comes an intensity, an honesty, a gentleness. He found it hard to break his gaze until hearing Finnick and River fall into the water snapping him back.

He chuckled slightly as he saw River's checks flash pink under her drench hair that clung to the sides of her face. He closed his eyes again, letting the sun rake over his body. He didn't want to feel this way, though he was finding it less and less harder to care. They were already in the games, and since he was going to die anyways he figured it was time to stop over thinking everything. He kicked his feet slightly in the water as if they were going along to some beat that even he didn't know. "Remember in 3rd grade when we had that school assembly about reaping day and I fell off the stage?" He laughed at the memory of his younger self who had been unluckily chosen to stand in front of the entire school to the talk about his uncle who had been chosen in a reaping. "They were so mad.." He laughed again when the image of the teachers face saying it wasn't a joke, that this wasn't suppose to be fun.

Finnick couldn't help but laugh out loud at her reaction to when he knocked her feet out from under her and dragged her all the way into the water. He hadn't really let himself relax in so long that he wasn't even aware of how much he was in that moment, only how nice of a feeling it was so he wasn't even thinking or caring about it right now, even if he knew he should probably be more attentive and alert to their surroundings. Not only were they still in the games after all, but of all places they were in open space, and by the river - actually, quite literally in the river at this moment.

"Oh yes I did" He grinned back at her to her remark about what he'd done and joking about how he didn't dare. It was nice to relax like this, and particularly with River. For a moment, it was like he could almost forget they were in the games, and they were back in their district just having fun and hanging out. He knew that wasn't the truth though, as much as he wanted it to be, so he didn't get too caught up in those thoughts, at least having enough senses about him to be at least somewhat aware of their surroundings.

After a few minutes though, he realized just how close they were, and in the position they seemed to have found themselves in. Even Finnick got a bit flustered, though his face didn't show it, as he just awkwardly cleared his throat, loosening his grip on River as he let her go and looked away awkwardly "Anyways" he spoke up, clearing his throat once more to get his head out of the clouds, as he moved to get up once she got off him "For the record, I just won" he couldn't help but just jab in lightly with a small smirk in River's direction as he climbed out of the river, and began wringing out any excess water from him and his clothes that he could.

Lilly hadn't realized she'd been staring at Gale until he suddenly spoke up, bringing up memories from school when they were at a much younger age. She blinked a bit, snapping out of her daze and her face flushing a bit in embarrassment at her own realization she had been staring at Gale, and for far longer than what was normal or appropriate. She quickly looked away, glad that it appeared he hadn't noticed her staring, and she awkwardly tried to calm her flustered self as she listened to him bring up a moment in third grade.

"O-oh yeah" she laughed a bit, shaking off her own awkward embarrassment "Yeah, I remember that" she smiled lightly at the memory. Third grade was a long time ago, and she didn't remember everything from that age, but that day at school was definitely something she remembered. It was the first day that the teachers had them put on demonstrations of the reapers, trying to prepare them all for when they really would have to attend the reaping and possibly have their name called to participate. She remembered being so scared, even though she knew it wasn't real, but she'd been so scared because of the reality of what it would be, and what it meant. She'd completely forgotten about Gale falling off the stage until he brought it up now, causing her to smile a bit as she recalled how funny it had been, and even though she hadn't known him at the time, he'd made her laugh - just about everyone really, except for the teachers.

"Yeah, you were quite the class clown that day" she laughed a bit as she looked to him, smiling a bit "I'd actually completely forgotten about that until you mentioned it just now" she said with a slight smile. She hadn't done a lot of reminiscing lately. Ever since she'd been called at the reaping, all she'd been thinking about was the future, and her own certainty that she would likely die. She hadn't really just reminisced a bit like this, and it was kind of nice. Life was still tough for a child in District 12, but they at least hadn't any worries or responsibilities really.

She didn't hide her scoff at Finnick's comment about winning. She was silently grateful for the normalcy of the conversation, slightly hiding her earlier embarrassment. She couldn't believe sitting there staring at him with nothing to say, her mind a complete blank. But thankfully Finnick was able to carry on like nothing happened, making her relax back into her earlier mood. Geez it's just Finnick. She told herself. "If by winning you mean cheating then sure." She rolled her eyes before remembering she was sitting half underwater and pulled herself up to her feet.

She treaded through the water and back up onto the muddy shore, wringing her hair out between both hands trying to get as much water out as possible. Her hair knotted in her fingers as she tried to smooth it down, in that moment wishing for nothing more than a shower..or a brush. She worked the tangled mess down until she was able to tie it back into a messy sideways braid as it flowed over her shoulder thankfully keeping calm and not doing that swooshing thing like it did sometimes.

Being back out of the water she knew it was time to move on, hoping their good luck at not getting caught would continue and she move to grab another handful of water, since she used a lot of energy running around she figured one more couldn't hurt before turning back towards the group. "Should we head on then?" She didn't want to stay too long in one place, even if it had only been 20 mintues or so they still had a whole day of trekking through the forest to do and possibly find food and a water source. "Should we keep close to the river some like yesterday or try for a new spot?" While she knew the latter was risky, there were also advantages and she wanted to get everyone's thought on it.
~
He laughed at her comment about being a class clown that day, and he supposed he was. He remembered standing there in his school uniform completely dreading the idea of people watching him, which he guessed was ironic now that he was being broadcasted through the entire country, all the districts watching his entire move and the thought made an unsettling feeling stir in him; and he wondered how many cameras were pointed at their group right now. They weren't doing anything exciting, though sometimes the capital liked to show these things to the districts, like 'see its not all bad out here'. The thought making him sigh in disgust, and he decided to keep the mood light by keeping on topic.

"Yeah, I haven't thought of it much until now. I guess the games brought it up." He shrugged not really knowing where the memory came from, but he figured being in the games mixed with his good mood made him remember it. He peaked his eyes open, the sun shining blinding him slightly as he stared up towards Lilly. He hadn't really noticed her embarrassment, although he figured her slight unevenness was due to the uncomfortableness with her leg and to that he couldn't blame her. He contiuned to openly watch her, the sun hitting her in the exact spot lighting up her hair as if it were fire; he was in slight awe of the sight but tried to keep his outside features neutral not wanting to make her feel uncomfortable or embarrass himself anymore than he already had.

It seemed like Finnick and River were done with their water fight and were headed back towards the enbankment. He knew it was time to move on, they had spent enough time with their guard down and being exposed like this was dangerous, especially being by the river knowing it was probably the only fresh water source in the game. Although there was the lake surrounding the cornucopia but that had been saltwater, wondering if it had been close to the ocean or if the game makers flew in special salt water. "Ready?" He look to Lilly smiling as he stood up offering her a hand to help her.

As she commented about him winning because he cheated, he rolled his eyes "Oh please, I never cheat. You're just jealous" he smirked as he glanced back over at her. Though he found for some reason now when he looked at her, he grew instantly nervous, and could only think about that moment when they were so close in the water. For a second then, when they were like that, the thought of kissing her had crossed her mind, even for a small second, and now, he couldn't get those sort of thoughts out of his head when he looked at her.

He quickly glanced away from her, looking over to the other two of their group to try and distract himself from those thoughts, which, was a little easier to do when he wasn't looking directly at River. Though he was glad that things weren't obviously awkward between them or anything now, judging by the way she responded back to his own teasing of having won their little water fight. Now out of the water and drying off, his mind started to clear and focus a bit more on the reality of their lives right now and that they should probably focus back on survival.

Glancing over to Lilly and Gale, he smiled a bit seeing that they seemed to be having a nice time relaxing and reminiscing too. He almost felt bad that they interrupted them and snapped them back to reality, but he knew River was right and they needed to focus back on shelter, and hopefully a good one. The past couple nights they hadn't found the best of shelters, granted it usually was harder to find a more secure and hidden sort of shelter the bigger a group was.
~
She smiled a bit and nodded her head in agreement with Gale as he commented how the Games made him think back to it "Yeah...I guess the Games bring up a lot of old memories. For me I kind haven't been able to think about anything but the present and future lately I guess" she commented, but she was enjoying this conversation too much and relaxing to let it turn dark and uneasy, so she continued "But it's nice to be able to think about old memories like that" she said as she glanced over to him and smiled a bit "So thank you."

It wasn't long before they were snapped out of old and happy memories by the other two who'd gotten out of the water and brought it to their attention they should probably be on the move again, and look for shelter like planned. She sighed a bit to herself, before smiling as she took Gale's offered hand and nodded her head, moving to get up after taking a good last sip of water, not knowing when they'd have more of it and wanting to make their canteens last as long as possible.

Getting up, she turned to glance over at the two - maybe they had to get more serious and focus on things like survival and shelter, but she really wanted to hold on to this feeling of relaxed and playfulness of an atmosphere in their group, so, she decided to tease the two 'children' of their group, smirking over at them "Sure, I'm ready to get going if you two lovebirds are" she taunted them. Even if they were both too scared to admit it, or whatever reason it was, Lilly thought it was kind of obvious between them how close they were. "Staying closer to the water isn't the safest. But I think with a group as big as ours, if we had to, we could handle it" she commented as they began in their search again, moving away from the opening of the waters edge and everything.

As much as she wanted to hold onto this moment longer, she knew it wasn't safe anymore. With Lillys comment about her and Finnick, since their obviously display of playing suggested that they were close, which she knew was becoming more and more true -she tried to keep her features neutral knowing that her flushed face was quick to give her away and she didn't want to make things awkward with him. She honestly enjoyed his company, and she decided to make a quick joke to smooth the transition. "Riiight, Mr. Ladies man over here." Rolling her eyes teasingly like the idea of Finnick loving someone was purposterious.

River knew they still had hours before the sky got dark. Maybe. This was still an artificial landscape. If the gamemakers wanted, they could make it perpetual day for days.. an eery feeling found a comfortable spot in her mind that she couldn't shake but she tried to reassure herself by remembering they usually didn't tamper much with the days. And she couldn't stop the dark course her thoughts were taking.. the ground is also quite rocky, covered in boulders. She came to the conclusion that this could be the perfect area for a landslide, but again.. it is still the first week and the Gamemakers wouldn’t need to engineer that just yet.

Still, it’s something to take note of. Unless of course the game was dragging on then they might to speed things up but she figured that wouldn't be for days so right now there was no use in worrying about it. Regaining her mind once again she looked back towards the group nodding in agreement about taking a new path trying to get away from the river. Finding another suitable water source might prove a challenge, though it would lessen their chances of coming across someone so she figured it'd be worth a shot.
~
Shelter was the next thing on their list to find. The trees are denser the father inland they go, and a lot larger – probably Capitol hybrids. They do that, he heard. They change things to suit them, so that they’re perfect. But this time, it’s perfect for them as well. The roots are gigantic and twist the land with them, meaning that there are plenty of nooks and crannies behind bushes and under leaves if you look hard enough. So hopefully they'd find something within a few hours of traveling. After helping Lilly to her feet, he took out his canteen guzzling the last drops of water, he place the bottle in the river until it’s full. Of course, no packages arrived in the night and none will today, unless they were near death and hopefully that wouldn't be the case.

They all play this stupid game differently. Him? He's playing to survive; playing to just escape this place alive. The careers? Oh, they’re playing to kill. And the Game is so much more fun when there are no rules to play by – for them, anyway. Them and us; the predators and the prey. He thought to himself, but he refused to accept himself as the prey anymore. It wasnt just him that he was trying to keep alive, and if he accepted defeat now before anything has happen then he might as well mark his early grave.

Heading off towards the forest again after it had become clear to move on, he snorted slightly at Lillys harmless joke. Of course it was obvious now that Finnick and River were closer then what they'd admit and he even felt a strong protective vibe from Finnick towards the white haired girl. Though a day ago he might have thought how ridiculous it was to feel that way towards someone out here, now he found himself in a similar situation. He felt his skin buzz with energy as he held her hand earlier, thinking how much he didn't want to let it go. He glanced back at her, making sure she was keeping up.

As they started to all seem to come back down from their own safe haven happy places of relaxation and amusement, coming back to reality of where they were and the stakes at place here, Finnick started to get a bit more focused and serious again, though not too much so he couldn't still joke around. He found that they should be able to afford at least this much for themselves in the games. Hearing Lilly's comment regarding them, he rolled his eyes a bit "Oh please" he huffed, about to retort with another come-back before hearing Rivers remark, causing him to grin a bit "I don't know what you're talking about" he grinned sheepishly, acting innocent despite the obvious "It's not my fault the ladies can't resist me" he winked playfully at River.

After messing around with the jokes a few more times, it seemed they were all focused again and back on track to looking for a good shelter. While it may still be relatively early in the day, it was never too early to find good shelter. And if they passed food they could use on the way, that was an even bigger bonus, since eventually they would need it. But for now they had some fruit left over from the other day when he and Gale had collected them, and the priority at the moment was shelter. And if it was good enough, they may be able to use it more than one night, hopefully.

As they walked through the forest, he couldn't help but think about Lilly's joke. It was harmless enough, and it honestly hadn't bothered him. But it did get him thinking, more about River, and how they'd been playing around in the water and ended up in it at the end. And that moment he considered kissing her - or, at least felt the desire to anyways. He couldn't stop thinking about that thought, and River, and how right that Lilly was in her words, whether she was just joking, or being serious about it.
~
After getting to her feet with Gale's help, she brushed herself off before sending one last joke towards Finnick and River for the time being, before they would all continue on in their search for shelter. She smiled a bit, glad that neither of the two took offense and were bothered by her joke, more so just continued on with their own comments. She rolled her eyes at Finnick's comment in response to river though, and just shook her head in amusement before they all continued on together towards the thicker parts of the forest.

Walking through the forest, she looked around for what might be a good spot to make their shelter and camp out for the night in, also trying to be mindful of the location of it as well. Not just if it was a good spot to cover them or anything from being in an opening or anything like that, but also that might do well against any possible threats the game-makers themselves might throw at them, be it some wild beasts, or something like that.

She had to admit she liked this area of the forest they were in. It was a lot more overgrown and littered in various types of foliage and shrubs and such. But at the same time, it certainly was giving her a workout for her injured leg. She did fine to keep up, but having only been able to walk again for just over a day now, the movement and workout of the fines and roots and such were certainly being felt in her leg, but it wasn't anything she couldn't handle. Compared to when it was actually infected, this pain wasn't anything, so she supposed that infection was good for one thing at least - setting a bar of pain tolerance for her and knowing how much worse things could get - and probably even worse than that too.

River followed suit towards the edge of the forest. With Finnick's comment about how all ladies wanted him she felt a slight pang in chest.. Jealously. While it was brief it still left an impression on her, making her insides twist. She hated this feeling, while she knew Finnick was just joking she still couldn't help knowing it was also true. She remembered the way girls would fall all over themselves in the halls at school.. Not that she cared one way or another then, he was just some overstuffed peacock to her. She remembered his last games, how he charmed his way into everyone heats..insert gag here..

Jealously was an ugly feeling she decided, she had never had the need to feel this way before, honestly there was never someone in her life that could make her feel this way. Hating the idea of this emotion showing on her face she quickly added with her own comeback, "Pfft, please. I'd be attracted to that rock before your ugly face." She pointed out towards an unsuspecting boulder laying just outside their path. "I wonder how many ladies he gets.." Still in character as if she was actually pondering the thought. She left her hand under her chin, like she was deep in thought before smirking towards Finnick.

She wondered for a second if Finnick had ever been in love.. she sure hadn't but he had seemed to get enough attention that it was possible. She was sure that after the last games he probably had suitors lined up around the block because of his new found wealth. Not that she could blame them, he was very attractive.. for a pretty boy..if you were in to that kind of thing. Arrogance was never something she had found appealing, however she had gotten to know him a little more then most did she presumed.. not the person trying to show off or the person trying to gain something from her - and she wondered how many other people could say that.
~
"Look, now you've set them off again." Gale quietly teased towards Lilly as he continued to hear different remarks coming from both Finnick and River. He bumped his elbow playfully into her arm, not hard enough to knock her over or anything. He enjoyed his banter with Lilly, her humor was unsuspecting which made it all the better - and he tucked a strand of red hair behind her ear gently, not caring if this crossed a line; before turning and following Finnick and River. They were getting farther into the forest now, the sounds of the river slowly fading. The sun was already starting to blaze above them, becoming sweltering and almost overpowering and he walked along a fairly smooth path. Now and then he'd run into some exposed roots in the ground but other than that it seemed to be a steady pace

He wiped beads of sweat from his brow before something up ahead caught his gaze. A small white heart shaped flower with pink in the middle showing through the bushes on the ground. "I recognize that.." He trailed off before kneeling in front of it. Strange there should be more.. he pushed back through the underbrush some to find a few more popping through the ground. "Can I borrow that?" He pointed at River's boot, showing that she did indeed still have her knife tucked away in it. He wasn't trying to take it away, but he'd need something to help cut it out of the ground - even though she had a skeptical look on her face with a raised eyebrow. Holding his hands out in defense he said, "I promise to give it right back.. my mother taught me how to share correctly." He joked lightly hoping it'd soften up the tension a little.

He knew River was starting to open up a little, however she hadn't known him and Lilly as long as Finnick so he suspected she would still be a little tense about things. Thankfully she only rolled her eyes before untucking the knife and tossing it at him. Before long he was cutting at the surface of the ground, not sure how deep this thing actually went. He set the knife aside after what he thought was enough cuts using his hands to get up the root underneath, his fingers digging through the dirt. "Sweet Potato." He grinned holding out the brown leathered skin of the root.

Finnick was entirely unaware of the fact he might have actually hurt River a bit with that comment, regarding how many options of women he practically had to choose from. Not that he'd ever actually been interested in any of them. Sure, he had played along in the past, flirted here and there with some of the woman just to keep up that sort of 'pretty boy flirt' look he had going for him around the capitol. Though that wasn't to say he particularly liked it all that much. Sure, he didn't mind it, and it was a bit of his more confident and arrogant side, which he honestly did have and that wasn't an act, though he did play it up a bit more in the games and such, since that seemed to be something the capitol loved about him.

Despite being the flirt he was, he could actually be pretty unaware of someone when they were genuinely interested in him. Or maybe it was more so matters where he himself was emotionally interested that it blinded him from being able to see the signs such as with River, unlike where he usually could see in other girls that usually flirted with him. It seemed though when he unintentionally and unknowingly upset River with his words, she got right back at him. Usually he could scoff and play off someone's insult - he had been able to with her so easily earlier in the games. But now when she insulted him, even if jokingly, it actually bothered him.

As she continued joking regarding the rock and how many women it got, he just rolled his eyes in slight annoyance but didn't say anything, having fallen silent actually now with nothing coming to mind as a come back. He didn't have anything in response, and just let it drop, unable but to help wonder if she really was that disinterested in him and thought so little of him. Thankfully, when Gale seemed to notice something and get interested in it, it distracted him from the thoughts that were bothering him. "What is it?" he asked curiously as he was digging in the ground, before pulling something up and said what it was. Finnick recognized the food - but he didn't know it grew looking like that, and his eyes lit up a bit "Hey, great find" he applauded the other, looking through the brush and seeing a patch of similar looking plants sticking up from the ground.
~
Hearing Gale's remark Lilly couldn't help but giggle a bit and let out a sheepish grin as she glanced to him, merely giving a shrug in response since it's not like she could deny it, as they were going off again because she'd stirred them up again. Despite the insults and comments they threw at each other, she could tell neither of them really meant their words or anything, and she just smiled a bit with a shake of her head "Honestly, they sound like an old married couple" she joked with Gale silently with a small laugh as Finnick and River were distracted and currently not paying them any attention.

She was about to continued walking with him, when he had paused and reached a hand out to her. She found herself frozen in place, confused, but all she was able to do was just watch the hand near her face, her heart picking up pace a bit as he drew closer, not really knowing what he was doing, or what to expect. When he just delicately moved some stray strands of her red hair out of her face, and tucked it behind her ear, she felt her face growing hot in embarrassment increasingly with the growing pace of her heart.

Realizing he started following after with River and Finnick, she gulped a bit and quickly shook herself out of her trance-like state, quickly catching up and following after Gale and continuing on with the group. After probably about a half hour of walking, Gale stopped to kneel by a plant and she looked at him curiously, before he soon dug it up and they discovered what it was. Her eyes lit up at the prospect of actual, hardy food that might fill them up and calm their cramping stomachs. "Sweet!" she grinned happily, before laughing a bit "No pun intended" she added in, realizing she replied that finding a sweet potato was sweet. She moved down by some other plants that looked similar to help dig them up as well, using a skinny broken piece of branch to dig the dirt out away from the plant, and helped Gale collect a bunch of them.

River found her joke to be light, not even considering that someone might take it personally. And she waited for some witty remark from her friend as she trailed behind him now, however she was only greeted with silence and was curious as to why Finnick didn't seem to be in the mood anymore. River wasn't known for her insight into any type of relationship, even friendships were still a stretch, but she wondered at Finnick's now quiet nature if she had said something to upset him. She raked her brain, but all she could tell was they were having a good time up until now.

Deciding not to pry, she kept her mouth shut as well. She wasn't great with words, in fact anything emotional made her somewhat uncomfortable and she couldn't stop fidgeting with the hem of her sleeves. She was starting to get agitated at this unsettling awkwardness, what happened? She figured maybe it had to do with being in the games, it wasnt smart to play and be carefree so she tried clearing her mind, focusing on the forest in front of her when she came to abrupt stop almost running into Finnick. Thankfully she caught herself, and peered over to see what caused the brakes.

It looked like Gale had found something, a soft white flower poking up from the ground. She wasn't sure if it was just her, but she didn't recognized this plant; but figured Gale knew what he was doing. And when he asked for her knife she was even more skeptical; but she trusted Gale and lightly tossed him the weapon. When he pulled the odd looking root out of the ground, a smile spread across her face at the familiar vegetable. She laughed at Lillys pun, before kneeling down beside Gale digging her fingers into the wet soil.
~
Gale handed River her knife back when she knelt down beside him, they all seemed to be eager to dig up enough of the plant to sustain them. As much as he enjoyed the fruit, which had been keeping them alive, he knew they needed real substance if they wanted to keep their strength up. He had only had it once in the captial and he knew the best way to eat it was to boil the vegetable in water, but since he didn't want to take a chance with a fire he was still glad it was safe to eat raw; and hopefully fill them up.

Grabbing at the backpack, he unzipped it slightly trying to rearrange the fruit and what was left of the medicine before dropping in several sweet potatoes. He handed each of them a piece of fruit, hoping to make some more room and also since none of them had any breakfast he knew they wouldn't make it much longer in this heat without a little food. He peeled back the yellow skin of the banana, knowing they just had water and should save the oranges for a time when they might be in need of some liquid.

"Okay we need to find shelter next. But if you guys want to rest here for a second to eat that's fine as well." He knew the heat of the day was waning on all of them, thankfully they hadn't been using too much energy since their path was rather even and no tributes yet to run from. He zipped up the pack when he was done with his handful of potatoes, and he rubbed a little more dirt over the orange fabric that had started to peek through. When he was satisfied he tossed the pack back towards Finnick, not sure if he'd want it back since it was still his.
