Australasian Federation

Port Cook, Oceania

Official Languages:

Demonym:
Australasian

Government:
Federal Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy

Population:
1,792,404,453

Currency:
Australasian Dollar

Summary:
The Australasian Federation is a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy and representative democracy composed of eighty two territories across four planets and eight star systems, including a dozen moon territories and three interstellar territories. The current capital of Australasia is the metropolis of Port Cook on Oceania, the capital world as Australasia is one of Earth's many nations to have the majority of its population off-world and spread across its four colonies, although a large portion of this off-world population is located on Oceania.

The Barrier system was one of the first star systems in the Orion Spur to be claimed and settled by a nation which was not one of the superpowers at the time and as such it garnered a great deal of attention at the time. The first Australasian colonists arriving on Oceania in 2116, only half a year after Australia, New Zealand and the several dozen Pacific islands within their sphere of influence opted to unify into the Australasian Federation for this exact purpose. Being one of the first systems overall to be colonized by Humanity in the earliest years following the discovery on Pluto, Barrier recieved several million immigrants between 2116 and 2136 alone, this number growing rapidly as the government put into place several policies offering subsidies and other financial incentives for would-be colonists to Barrier and the subsequent systems that the Federation would claim, settle and develop.

Today, the Australasian Federation is one of the Orion Spur's wealthiest and most developed nations, with a consistently high ranking in quality of life, economic freedoms, civil liberties and political rights alike even when compared to its western allies. It maintains a relatively high GDP per capita and although the gap of income inequality between its wealthiest and poorest has been growing in recent decades it is still a high-income economy. Outside of the superpowers, Australasia is one of the Orion Spur's most influential nations thanks mainly due to its economic and diplomatic strength as it spends a comparatively low proportion of its GDP on defense. Regardless, the Federation yields a somewhat small, but highly advanced and capable military that frequently engages in anti-piracy and counter-terror operations with other powers across the Orion Spur.

History:
Founded on August 1st, 2115 in Suva, Fiji by a collection of Australian, New Zealander and Pacific islander representatives, the Australasian Federation initially begun its existence as the Australasian Confederation, as throughout most of the early 22nd century Australasia was far more loosely connected than it is today. Initially a politico-economic and military union similar to the European Union that had existed in the previous century, the Australasian Confederation would over the course of the next several decades develop into the fully fledged Federation that it is now. This period in history, roughly lasting from 2116 to 2153 being marked by contrasts of immense prosperity brought on by Australasia's advance into space and by the intense civil disorder that would regularly erupt between supporters of continual integration and nationalist opposition.

By the end of this period of Australasian history, a compromise had more or less been agreed to between the various left and right wing political parties of the Confederation's member states, agreeing to reform the Confederation into what it is today, under the strict conditions as stated in the Australasian Charter that the former member states of the Confederation now under the Federation would retain great degrees of sovereignty and state rights in-order to distinguish the many former nations, peoples and cultures of the new Australasia, adopting a federal republic styled system much like the United States where the states of Australasia maintain a large amount of autonomy while the new federal government still enacts various nationwide laws and policies mainly around the areas of foreign policy, defense and trade. It was under this new, far more united government that Australasia's interstellar expansion would increase immensely increase and by 2294, the majority of the Australasian population would be living off of Earth.

Australasia was one of the few countries prior to the UN's Neutrality Legislation to have already moved it's capital city off-world, having selected Port Cook on Oceania as the new center of its government, the Port Cook Metropolitian Area, already classed by the UN as a Alpha+ Interstellar City being designated as the Australasian Capital Territory in 2247 as the government's continued to pour greater and greater resources into the development of Australasian space. Throughout much of its life as a sovereign nation, the Australasian Federation has maintained stricter immigration policies than most, this is largely due to the government's long-standing Pacific Protection policy, putting emphasis on ensuring that the nation's Pacific Islander minorities are protected from losing their voice in the nation's democratic process by maintaining their status as the nation's largest minority group.

Generally, unlike other nations in the Orion Spur, Australasia's history has for the most part been relatively uneventful in terms of widespread political or otherwises historical changes, aside from its economy which has time and time again been the focus of many Australasian history texts due to the complexities of Australasia's expansion into space and its collective decision to grow into more space that it did not necessarily need, as of 2451 the Federation holding onto a disproportionate amount of territory compared to other nations of a similar size. The question of why the Australasian will had led to this being the topic of interesting debate between scholars across the Orion Spur.

Military:
The Federal Australasian Armed Forces (FAAF) is the military organization responsible for the defense of Australasia. It consists of the Federation Australasian Navy (FAN) and the Australasian Army, along with a number of 'tri-service' units. The FAAF is charged primarily with promoting the Federation's interstellar interests, protecting its shipping lanes and partaking in peacekeeping operations across the Orion Spur.

Mostly supplied with domestic equipment from pistols to warships, the Federal Australasian Armed Forces also utilize the equipment of other Atlantic Treaty members to a degree, specifically American equipment, the Armed Forces as one can expect has a long and friendly history with the other military powers of the West. Currently the Australasian military has ongoing operations in several foreign systems, ranging from supervisor roles to carrier strike group patrols, Australasia too contributes its fair share to the United Nations Peace Corps.

Although less active in conventional warfare than some other armed forces, the FAAF has still engaged in several conventional conflicts with minor, rogue powers in the Orion Spur, mostly throughout the 2380s and for the most of its history has specialized in anti-piracy, counter-terrorism and humanitarian operations although there has been a push as of late by many military and civilian officials alike to reorient the Armed Forces in a more conventional direction to mixed success.

An age-old order, originating from the Crusades, that has dedicated itself to helping the poor and protecting trade for almost a century. They have a large navy designed to escort convoys or hunt down pirates. This is to both ensure safe travel for all and to aid their other main agenda, helping the misfortunate, especially in regions with great wealth disparity, food shortages or currently in a crisis that could or is resulting in such outcomes. They are funded in part through contracts with trade companies and other people wishing to hire sections of their navy for protection and through donations from nations, often those nations in which the Knights Bases are located as the Knights help to secure those nations transport links while also providing aid to their citizens.

During this time their goals have shifted. Prior to the Mid 1500s their stated goal was the reclamation and protection of the Holy Land, following the loss of the Island of Rhodes to the Ottoman Empire they found themselves on the Island of Malta and, so far from the Holy Land needed a new way to line their pockets as donations to support them in their original goal were dwindling, and its possibility of success decreasing they shifted their aim to stopping piracy, most of which was supported by the Ottoman's anyway and so began their policy of policing the seas.

Military:
The Military of the Order exists to keep the peace, as such they are often sent on UN Peacekeeping missions and are a permanent part of the UN Mission to Sol as they beleive in protecting the shared heritage of man. While its army is solely used to maintain order and supress unwarranted violence its Navy also patrols neutral space to try and stop Piracy. The armies uniform and colours are white, like the UN's to mark them as a force of peace, however it is normally accented by Red if not on a UN mission but the accents can be removed so that the Uniform is entirely white, this is done for soldiers on UN missions. Order ships are also white and accented by red with the Order's flag placed large on their side to ensure no confusion with White UN vessels.

The Order also has a large number of imposing Hospital Ships that are incredibly well equipped and will often visit the aftermath of warzones or other crisis to help support local efforts in tending the wounded.

1916

2 Planets, 3 Moons, 1 System

History:
Following the collapse of the European union in the late 2070's century, the Republic of Ireland was faced with the challenge of securing it's economy and people. The government initially responded through subsidizing the manufacturing of chemicals and electronics, however, the former soon failed. That said, it was not a complete crisis. The government was able to save much of the dwindling heavy industry that had already started to become obsolete as other countries offered cheaper alternatives to Irish labor. It also began to deregulate the agricultural industry, and focused on the construction of vast flood-dams in order to provide work for those who had lost their jobs. The Irish government also maintained a policy of very loose enforcement of the North Irish border, despite security concerns. These responses created a temporary increase the living conditions of the Irish people. The government also sought to address the dwindling growth rate through relaxing immigration policies, specifically targeted at the descendants of Irish immigrants abroad in countries such as the United States of America, and the United Kingdom. This initiative was met with mixed success, however, the influx of moderately skilled labor was essential to the success of the Island's development.

Following the discovery of the alien technology on Pluto, the Irish government, which had hardly changed in the 20 years since the collapse of the European Union, the Irish government recognized this as an opportunity to revitalize Ireland's electronics. This failed remarkably through a combination of mismanagement and the exposure of massive corruption in the ruling party. This resulted in a slow unwinding of the prosperity of the last two decades, as government officials had become complacent and ill-equipped for such troubles. The sectarian violence that had plagued the country nearly two centuries ago returned in 2102, this time more deadly than had been imagined due to advances in military technology. Insurgent groups long thought to have been disbanded rose up to support various factions, as violence spilled into Northern Ireland. Despite both domestic and international attempts to quell violence, Ireland became embroiled in extreme violence. In response, the government declared martial law, which saw various opposing groups retract support from the government, or even towards some violent parties.

On March 25th, 2104, the Irish Defense Force, against order from the United Nations formally engaged all rebel groups on the Island. This would result in thousands of deaths of both civilian and insurgents alike. Curiously, the military ignored violence on the Northern border, claiming that Ulster was not their responsibility. Through brutal repression and extreme violence, the military restored order to the Republic, however, the army did not relinquish control of the government. Following a short year of peace, violence erupted again, this time solely directed at the armed forces. Many members of the military saw the writing on the walls, and deserted. Initially, the rebels were largely disorganized and had no central organization, however, several former opposition officials largely dedicated to Republicanism emerged as leaders of the movement. One in particular, Elise Flanagan, became wildly popular for fighting alongside ordinary citizens in hopes of restoring democracy. The fighting lasted 6 days in total, and ended with Elise Flanagan and the Republicans proclaiming the restoration of the Republic of Ireland.

Flanagan was immediately declared interim Prime Minister of Ireland, as the nation began to reorganize itself. After a few months, the constitution of 1937 was restored, and elections were planned to reorganize parliament. Several groups that fought both in the earlier conflict, and formed political parties, with the only remnant of the old government represented in Flanagan's own Sinn Féin. Due to her recognition, candidates who ran as members of her party were elected in massive numbers, and came to dominate the parliament in a super majority. Under Flanagan's guidance, the party pushed through a series of radical left-wing reforms that were aimed at the reconstruction of Ireland. Flanagan remained as the matriarch of Ireland for thirty three years, and personally oversaw much of the island's reconstruction. In the violence, most agriculture and lighter industry was totally destroyed, which left few opportunities for reconstruction, however, the new frontier of space provided untapped opportunity. The Irish government began encouraging investment in aerospace and higher-end electronic components common in such machines.

The 22nd century passed Ireland without much consequence. The country remained relatively stable, and it slowly began to develop into a center for early deep-space exploration. The population began to rebound from the conflict, as did general industry. The government began to subsidize almost all universities in Ireland in the mid 2100's, which helped prevent major brain-drain out of Ireland, to other more desirable locations. By the 23rd century, conflict was largely a thing of the Republic's past. While Northern Ireland was still a problem for some, it remained largely free of Republican agitation. The Republic had almost entirely demilitarized, and most arms were either stockpiled, or sold to local police departments. In 2299, the 200th celebration of the Good Friday Agreement allowed most Irish to remember the once fragile peace they held, and to most, the violence was a generation or two removed from their lifetime.

The Irish government also began their first proper expeditions into deep-space, beyond the terrestrial solar system in 2271, with the launching of the first colonization mission to the Orion belt. The ship carried a thousand Irishmen and enough supplies to last them around 20 years after landfall. However, the ship never met it's target. Just a little over three years into it's voice, a freak accident involving an improperly constructed airlock depressurized a quarter of the ship. The speed at which the quadrant lost pressure caused the hull to bend dramatically, which caused the rest of the ship to slowly lose pressure. Some crew members survived for nearly a month in an emergency storage room, but were soon lost to the void of space as well. Following this disaster, the Irish space program was discontinued.

Following the disaster, the Irish remained out of direct contact with space, and instead the manufacturing industry continued to flourish. However, in 2329 the program was recommissioned, with the aims of extracting the bountiful resources of space. A small crew of 14 astronauts were trained, and in 2335, the first mission to the Orion belt set sail. Thanks to notable advances in space-travel technology, as well as communications, the Irish government was able to effectively guide the mission to a star system far away from earth. They named the system Farraige, literally meaning Far Land in Irish, and began to survey the system. After a year of travelling, they identified two planets suitable for Terraforming, and three others with highly desirable material. In 2339, the Irish government sent an expedition designed to remake a planet in the image of Ireland. The rest is history. Now, just over 300,000,000 Irish men and women live in the Farraige system, the vast majority of them calling New Dublin their home. The Irish government has shifted it's focus from space exploration, to the construction of merchant spacecraft, as well as terraforming technology.

Military:
Following the construction of Ireland's first space-fairing military vessel in 2363, the Irish Air Force, and the Irish Navy were formally integrated under the new office of the Naval Service of Ireland, which oversaw the defense of Irish territory across the stars. The Irish Defense Force adopted the Infantry standard in 2364 to commemorate the accomplishments of the Irish infantrymen in the conflict of the 22nd century, as well as to signify the dissolution of the Irish armed forces. The Irish Defense Force became a peacekeeping body, designed at ensuring domestic security. It has little to no realistic offensive capability, and acts as a police the majority of the time.

The Irish Naval Service is a great point of pride for most of the Irish living outside of Earth. In the time since the first cruiser was constructed, several more have been commissioned and laid down. Most of the time they are assigned to the protection of larger trade convoys or are sent as parts of United Nations peacekeeping missions. At the end of the 24th century, six Leinster-Class cruisers were in active service, alongside 13 Connacht-Class schooners. The schooners serve as the primary vessels used in trade protection, due to their relatively low cost. Outside of military vessels, the Irish Naval Services hosts several smaller patrol vessels designed for flights outside of planetary orbit of around four to six days. By and large, the Irish military mostly exists to make sure all goes smoothly, and that all shipments arrive on time.

Of note, however, is the Irish dependence on other countries, should all-out-war occur. The relatively small fleet, while effective, is hardly a match for the navies of other nations across Orion. The Irish military often seeks contracts from Australasian manufacturers, to fulfill needs in both the Irish Defense Force, and Naval Service. While most heavier weaponry is provided at contract by their Australasian allies, the Irish have found a reliable source of small arms production in their larger, and more developed neighbor, China.

Summary:
The Seidesian Confederacy is a nation within the Orion Spur formed after the declaration of independence from the United States in 2132, and the de facto successor state of the Republic of Victoria. Despite its relatively small size, the Confederacy has managed to culminate a powerful economy through rapid industrial expansion and commercial exportation, making it one of the wealthiest colonial powers to date.

Chamber of Ministers (Lower House)

Judicial:
The First Court of the Confederacy

Established:
June 6th, 2132

Territory:
29 Constituencies, 2 Planets & 1 Moon, 1 System

History:
The Confederacy, once a colony of the United States, declared its independence over three centuries ago motivated by a need for self-determination and nationalistic zeal. By the 6th of June 2132, the colonial government of Seidesia issued its official decree of secession from the United States through the Ordinance of Independence, signed by the original 29 Governors and the 1st President of the Confederacy, Theodore Becker. Regardless, Congress refused their claim to sovereignty - declaring the Confederacy to be a rogue state - and maintained their presence in the Seidel System until the newly-formed Confederate Armed Forces pressured them to withdraw.

Without the might of the United States to protect their claim to sovereignty, the Confederate government sought to rapidly expand and develop its armed forces to rival that of the average modern military, leading extensive enlistment drives and using local celebrity voices to attract potential recruits. The limited reach of the Confederacy led to the creation of the Expeditionary Force; an independent branch of the Armed Forces that combined the abilities of the Army and the Navy into a single organisation, capable of operating in foreign theatres of war without logistical or strategic support. The Expeditionary Force would prove itself to be critical to solidifying the Confederacy's claim to the Seidel System by expanding its reach of influence and protecting its borders from the United States.

With the election of Thomas Woods as the 2nd President of the Confederacy in 2142, the new administration adopted a policy of building political relations with other former-colonial powers to form a united defence to protect their mutual interests and claims to sovereignty. The policy itself was, more or less, unsuccessful, as many independent colonies were more interested in internal affairs. As such, the Confederacy instead sought out protection amongst the United Nations and, despite the best efforts of the American government, became a member state by the end of 2146.

The years that followed have been largely uneventful, save for the occasional border clash between the Confederacy and the United States against the wishes of the Secretariat and other member states. As of recent, the Confederate government has sought to once against expand its political influence amongst other former colonies to promote collective interests. Consequently, this has brought forward the question of who the Confederacy's allegiance lies with.

Military:
The Confederate Armed Forces - abbreviated CAF - is the armed wing of the Seidesian government, responsible for the defence of its territory, its citizens, and its foreign interests. The Forces are separated into the Confederate Navy, the Confederate Army, and the famed Expeditionary Force.

Unlike the typical modern fighting force, the CAF is equipped to tackle and engage professional standing militaries as a consequence of its less-than-stellar relationship with the United States, with counter-terrorism and anti-piracy duties being delegated to civil security units.

"The Struggle for Freedom is Unending”

Name:
The People’s Republic of China

Míngtiān, Di Yi system

Official Languages:
Standard Chinese (Mandarin)

Demonym:
Chinese

Government:
Unitary One-party State

Population:
17,451,825,972

Currency:
Yuan

Summary:
The People’s Republic of China is a single-party dictatorship located in the Tianxia Rift. The Spur’s most prominent authoritarian regime, China is a military and economic powerhouse. The People’s Republic holds direct sovereignty over sixteen different systems, but over two thirds of its population reside within the five largest among them. The capital system, Di Yi, is one of the few non-solar systems to achieve a population greater than ten billion. The capital planet, Míngtiān, is the political, intellectual and industrial heart of the PRC. A harsh planet with towering mountain ranges, vast stretches of tundra and unpredictable weather patterns, it is nonetheless geologically plentiful, and a consistently thin planetary crust allows for a near-total satisfaction of energy needs from geothermal energy sources.

The Communist Party of China, which has led the country for an unbroken 500 years, is an old and precautious institution, hesitant to burden itself with risk. The leadership maintains great faith in the pragmatic style of governance which has served the country so well these last centuries. And so fittingly, despite embracing the title of leader of the Communist world(s), little is being done in terms of advancing Socialism. This may soon change, however. President after President has made no more than vague promises to appease the intellectual wing of the party. The latter have become progressively disillusioned, and now begin in whispers to criticize party policy. The more radical factions within the party are gaining traction after what is perceived as a period of stagnation, and CPC provincial committees in the outer systems are starting to experiment with small-scale collectivism and worker self-management.

On the foreign policy front, China’s ambitions are outweighed by its aversion to risk, at least for now. Attempts at spreading socialism across the Orion Spur have been half-hearted due to an unwillingness to commit fully to foreign conflicts. Nevertheless, the Communist regime maintains as a priority the institution and support of friendly Socialist governments across the Spur. This policy is becoming a national imperative for the first time since the ASEAN civil war, as it is one of a handful of policies that the pragmatic and ideological sides of the party both fully support. Other foreign policy priorities include achieving parity with their long-time antithetical rival, the United States, and achieving absolute autarky.

To protect itself from threats both real and perceived, The Communist Party has sought to control more and more aspects of its citizens lives. It continues to monitor and censor all forms of digital information exchange within China. Chinese news and education, while reasonably reliable, is injected with healthy doses of propaganda. Interstellar travel within Chinese space is heavily regulated and restricted. The 21st to 25th centuries have seen a gradual expansion of the social credit system. Today, citizens can acquire social credit by participating in party events and demonstrations, voicing support for party policies publicly, working government jobs, serving in the military, volunteering within their communities and informing the party of counter-revolutionary activity and behavior, among other things. Citizens can also lose social credit by engaging in “counter-revolutionary” practices. Failure to maintain a certain minimum social credit rating warrants being sentenced to societal rehabilitation. Citizens with higher social credit ratings receive exclusive government-provided benefits, such as better state housing, priority social service, and with particularly high ratings, state-funded vacations to neighboring Bolivaria. Certain government positions are only available to those with exemplary social credit ratings. The Chinese government’s social engineering efforts are proving so successful that it is now faced with the awkward problem of having many of its citizens believe more strongly in communism than most of the leadership.

History:
The People’s Republic of China did not begin earnestly colonizing space until the end of the 22nd century. The alien technology discovered on Pluto was not shared with China, then out of favor with most nations of the world due to the ongoing cultural genocide of the countries’ ethnic minorities. The technology was eventually acquired through espionage in 2141, and China rushed to claim large swathes of space in the then largely untouched Tianxia Rift. Unfortunately, only a few years earlier in 2138 a period now domestically referred to as “The Great Regression” began, with outbreaks of civil disobedience, protest and outright insurrection occurring all across the country.

This tumultuous period, spurred by an envy on the part of the citizenry of the freedoms of the West, saw unprecedented demands in the country’s history for freedom of the press, freedom of association, freedom of belief and private property rights. At its height the individualist movement, as it would later be called, managed to force the Central Party Committee to pass the “Worker-Party Consensual Relationship Reforms of 2157”. These reforms represented major concessions to the movement, most especially when it came to economic and religious freedoms.

In the face of its many victories however, the movement grew complacent. The CPC leadership took advantage to secretly orchestrate a political crackdown of unprecedented scale, with tens of thousands of arrests taking place over the course of a few hours. Labelled as dissidents, leaders of the movement were either exiled or imprisoned, and the ensuing protests were crushed with merciless force. Broken and leaderless, the movement gradually died and in 2176 the reforms passed two decades prior were rejected and repealed. With order restored at home, the party was finally free to commit it’s attention to the stars. To ensure that it would never have to face such dangerous dissent again, the CPC developed ever stricter policies of control which only strengthened throughout the centuries and continue to this day.

The late 22nd-23rd centuries saw the rapid development of China’s closest systems. To address overpopulation concerns at home, emigration to China’s planetary systems was heavily encouraged. China would have an opportunity to test the capabilities of it’s interstellar navy in the ASEAN civil war, where it intervened at the Indonesians’ request against their Singaporean enemies. While successful in protecting its newfound ally and preventing a total defeat, the performance of the Chinese navy proved decidedly inadequate, and it has since undergone multiple large-scale expansions and reforms. Memories of the costly war plagued Chinese foreign policy for the subsequent decades, and China has chosen to avoid any large-scale military interventions since.

In the 24th century China’s focus gradually shifted from the richly developed capital and neighboring systems to the eastern systems, which the CPC worried were not sufficiently defensible following the arrival of pro-western Ireland into the region. Pre-existing regional energy and mining industries on the systems’ local moons were massively scaled, and large metropolitan areas developed around them. A small military settlement on Shàobīng, a gas giant’s moon in the Rongyu system, was expanded fifty times over to become a new military-industrial centre as well as the home of some 60 million Chinese citizens. Hǎiyang, located in Xueke and the only terrestrial planet in the eastern systems, became at this time an important regional capital, and it now boasts 150 million citizens and 6 provinces. The CPC was unable to spur comparable levels of growth in the Yi and Padui systems with their relatively barren and stubbornly inhospitable moons. Rigorous long-term terraforming initiatives across these two systems were finally completed in 2434, and plans to gradually develop them into centers of agriculture have slowly begun.

The smaller northern systems did not receive similar levels of attention. Qiancheng, Xinlao, Douzheng and Zhixiang represent only a single province each. Of interest is that in their neglect, the party leadership allowed these systems respective provincial governments to be infiltrated by party radicals, with the exception of Qiancheng. Since the turn of the 25th century sympathetic party intellectuals in the capital have been successfully arguing that more resources should be diverted towards the north, however the only system that appears to have benefited from the extra attention is Qiancheng.

Military:
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) is the armed forces of the People’s Republic of China and its founding and ruling political party, the Communist Party of China. The PLA consists of three professional service branches: the ground forces, the navy and the air force. For the past hundred and fifty years the Chinese navy has consistently been one of the largest and often the largest individual navy in the Orion Spur. Many of the navy’s ship designs are copies of American equivalents, though most of the time it is clear that corners have been cut. Particularly heavy on the railguns, the Chinese ships have been built with offensive capability in mind at the expense of maneuverability. The PLAs ground forces are trained for war, but they have in recent years served primarily as a counter-insurgency force for the PRC and its allies.

The Southeast Asian Federation is nominally a federation consisting of five Southeast Asian states: Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, and Cambodia. However, the events of 2312 had led to Singapore establishing a strong central government with supreme control over the rest of the Federation. Nowadays, the Federation is a parliamentary constitutional republic, under the rule of a single dominant party. The Federation is well known for it's strict legislature and inadequate human rights, and people can find trouble just by saying the wrong words at the wrong time.

The capital of the Federation is located on Singapore Prime, on the world of Cahaya, in the Tau Ceti system. The government, having remained paranoid about a Coalition invasion, had invested much within the military sector, and has a relatively small, yet powerful fleet that stands ready to defend the state from any invaders.

While the civil war has led to the disruption of the Federation economy, the state has made some solid progress in recovering it to pre-war standards. Average living standards across the Federation are low, but those living in the territory of those who sided with Singapore in the civil war have pretty decent living standards, while the others lived under horrid conditions. The government also heavily regulates almost everything that happens within it's borders with strict laws and equally strict law enforcement, and any potential unrest were swiftly dealt with. Despite this, the government still portrays itself as a democratic federation in the international scene, having even set up puppet governments for each of it's member states, albeit each of them has absolutely no say in the daily governance of the nation.

The Federation also boasts a multicultural society, with at least a hundred ethnic groups living within their borders. However, recently the government had begun intensive efforts to assimilate the minorities, with programs such as 'I am Indochinese' and 'National Culture Programme' attempting to create some sort of unified national identity within the state. The government had also begun to encourage the use of the official languages over the others, and any cultural practices that 'do not fit the criteria of what constitutes the national culture' were frowned upon.

History:
With the discovery of alien technology on Pluto in 2098, the nations that made up ASEAN had decided to unite in order to take advantage of the new situation, creating the foundations of what would become the Federation today. Just a few years later, East Timor and Papua New Guinea had decided to join the union as well. During the brief period in which ASEAN was united, the economy boomed, massive strides in technological development were achieved, and it seemed liked ASEAN was heading towards becoming a superpower. On 2138, a joint-colonization effort between Singapore and Malaysia had lead to the creation of the Cahaya colony, and another world, Suvarnabhumi, was colonized by the Thai just 8 years later. In order to aid their expansion, ASEAN has invested heavily into the development of space infrastructure, as well as various agricultural and construction technologies to make life easier on the colonies. Great cities were constructed on both Cahaya and Suvarnabhumi, with massive incentives offered to the citizens to encourage emigration towards the colonies. All seemed well for ASEAN's future.

However, there is indeed a dark side to the newly formed union. The federal government was weak, extremely so. Stronger and richer nations could easily hold sway over it, and they did. A coalition of ASEAN's richest states: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Brunei, formed an alliance in order to exploit the federal government's weakness to their own advantage, as well as to stop any of their fellow ASEAN states from rising up to challenge them. Colonization efforts by non-alliance states were heavily hampered by various regulations, or even outright blocked. Albeit Indonesia and Vietnam did manage to colonize a world or two, the others weren't as lucky, left alone on Earth, while their supposed comrades took to the stars. Federal funds were also directed to aid the growth and development of the allied states, while the rest only gave without ever receiving something in return. As the rich grew richer, and the poor became ever more poor, tensions grew within the ASEAN union, and by the 23rd century, all it needed was a spark to light up the powder keg.

That spark happened in the year of 2213, when the alliance, under the leadership of Singapore, attempted to further consolidate power over the federation into their hands. Tensions reached past the breaking point, and Indonesia and it's allies rose up against Singapore. With almost every nation in the ASEAN union, sans Cambodia, which had been pressured into joining the alliance by Thailand a few days after the rebellion, rebelling against the federal government, the ASEAN union disintegrated almost immediately. Shocked by the sudden change in events, Singapore was unable to respond effectively in the beginnings of the war, and the Indonesians were able to make large gains against the enemy. Outnumbered and unable to respond, things seemed bleak for Singapore and it's allies. However, the Indonesian military was backwards and inexperienced, while that of Singapore was the exact opposite, not to mention that the alliance had the support of Imperial Japan and Australasia. The Indonesian offensive was eventually halted at Suvarnabhumi, with the Indonesian navy suffering catastrophic losses against an enemy they outnumbered 3 to 1. Desperate for a breakthrough, the Indonesians continued making large scale offensives in the region, and hundreds of thousands of men would die pointless deaths for what is a futile effort. Eventually, the Singaporean navy was able to inflict a decisive defeat against the Indonesians, destroying up to 60 percent of their surviving fleet in a single battle. It seemed like Singapore was going to secure a total victory over their opponents at the moment.

However, desperate as they are, the Indonesians went to China for aid, promising huge concessions in return. The Chinese then intervened in the war, and deployed their navy to fend off the Singaporean offensives. However, the Chinese navy proved inadequate against the Singaporeans, and they were eventually pushed back to the edge of the Tianxia rift, where the borders stood today. While the astounding victories over the Chinese navy had caused some of the more hawkish members of the High Command to consider pushing into Chinese territory, it was soon decided that the Chinese behemoth was to be left alone, as the Singaporeans don't have the logistical capabilities to support any large scale operations against China. Eventually, the two warring sides agreed on an armstice, with the Chinese pulling out of northern Indochina, leaving it to be annexed by Singapore, and the borders in space staying as it is. Singapore and it's allies formed the Southeast Asian Federation, while the Indonesians and their allies consolidated into the Republic of Nasantara. During the first few years of the Federation, the federal government was quite powerful, and had considerable influence on the affairs of it's member states. However, that changed when what would be known as the Causeway Coup happened in 2312, ending with Singapore seizing absolute power over the rest of the Federation.

After the war, the Federation begun reconstruction efforts of the damaged infrastructure within it's borders, with a significant amount of funding going into the effort. As the economy recovered, the capital sector, as well as the southern systems of Jurong(formerly Aceh Baru) and Daulat(formerly Quà Tặng), where valuable mineral resources had been discovered, had undergone intensive development, while the western systems had been purposefully neglected by the central government, although that has begun to change since President Tan was elected to office. Besides calling for attention to the western regions, the new President had also called for an invasion of Nasantara, worsening the already icy Federation-Chinese relations, as well as the expansion of the military-industrial sectors.

Military:
The Federation Armed Forces (FAF) is divided into three branches: the Federation Army, the Federation Navy, and the Federation Air Force. The FAF prioritizes on quality over quantity, and has a small, but relatively advanced navy ready to defend the nation's sovereignty. Thanks to the paranoia of the Federation government, the ships of the Federation are designed for combat against enemy navies, armed with the most advanced(which just so happens to be the most expensive most of the time) weapons and systems available to them at the time of it's creation. While this has hampered economic development somewhat, the small size of the navy, as well as the fact that the Federation always sells their outdated ships to other nations, did somewhat offset the negative effects. Federation ships are designed to outlast the enemy, with heavy focus on armour and redundant systems. While they certainly do pack a punch, the navy tends to avoid all-out assaults, preferring to slowly wear down the enemy before finishing them off in a decisive strike.

"Advance with Knowledge and Power"

Name:
The Empire of Japan

Capital:
Tengoku

Official Languages:
Japanese, English

Demonym:
Japanese

Government:
Mixed Constitutional and Absolute Monarchy

Population:
7,678,273,133

Currency:
Imperial Yen

Summary:
The Idea of Imperialism began to rise in Japan led by the Imperial Family after the first planet was colonized. The Imperial Family believed that times have changed and the way Japan was currently governed at that time would place the nation in a passive state and lead to its eventual decline. The discovery of the alien technology opened doors to a new world and represented the beginning of a new era. An era where the nations would have to struggle for territory, resources, and power. Times were changing and nations could rise and fall overnight.

Transitioning to Imperialism would allow Japan to rapidly expand and actively struggle for territory and resources, matching the progress of the superpowers. Japan would no longer be suppressed and could again stand toe to toe with the other major powers.

Head of State:
Emperor Sorahito

Constitution:
Meiji Constitution

Legislature:
Imperial Assembly / Imperial Diet

Judicial:
Supreme Court of Japan

Established:
2150 (Transition to Imperialism)

Territory:
9 Systems

History:
Japan as a leader of technology was able to start the process of colonization in the early 2100's and one of the first nations to do so. They chose to colonize to the west, a place not too far and not too near Sol.

After the first planet was colonized, the idea of transitioning back to Imperialism was stronger than ever. Although Japan was leading, if it continues with its conservative actions, it will fall behind the other nations and eventually decline. With the lead of the Imperial Family along with their supporters from all branches of the government, Japan transitioned back into Imperialism a decade and a half after the first planet was colonized. The day of the transition was named "The Advent of The Imperials" or the more common version, "New Japan Day". It is one of the most important and celebrated event in the nation. The day symbolized the breaking of the chains that imprisoned the nation since its defeat in the second world war.

With the transition, Japan was able to rise further and was able to do more than it could do in the past like expanding their military. The military underwent a reform and standards were risen by several folds. Only two main branches remained; The Navy and The Army, with the Air Force being a division of the Army. The Navy and The Army developed and inter-branch rivalry and always seeks to outdo the other. Although it may be detrimental in certain aspects, it insures that both branches would always do their best. With that thought, the higher ups allowed it.

Japan still did its best to maintain past relations with other nations after its transition unless it was a country that rejected Imperial Japan like China - a country that always viewed Japan as a rival and despised Imperial Japans. ASEAN is one of the close friends of Japan and when the civil war happened, Japan sided with the Singaporeans and provided them help to against a Chinese-backed Indonesia. With the help of Japan and Australasia, Singapore was able to win the Civil War albeit not completely.

Military:
The Imperial Military is divided into two main branches: The Imperial Army and The Imperial Navy. The Imperial Army has high standards and is mainly composed of well-trained soldiers that could be considered as elites in small nations. Those that cannot pass the test and training of the army is destined to be a cannon fodder in the army reserves.

The Imperial Navy is the core of the Imperial Military. They believe that foreign threats should be destroyed in space before it could enter a planet and engage in land combat. The ships are designed and built to combat other navies on the same standard as the navies of other major powers. The Empire uses their own technology that is not at all inferior and even better than other nations on core parts of their ships. Each ship is made to combat and outlast two or more ships of the same class.

Government:
One-party military dictatorship under an absolute monarchy

Summary:
The State of Bolivaria, a totalitarian military junta masquerading as a monarchy, is a hell called home by nearly six billion people. Plagued by conflict and instability, its perseverance continues to astonish foreign onlookers and is accredited to the brutal rule of its Caudillos, the de facto rulers of the state. Despite its perilous political situation, its economy is comparable to that of other countries its size thanks to a flourishing illicit trade and a complete disregard by the state for the enforcement of its existing regulations.

If it weren’t for its gross and widespread wealth inequality, the nation might rank well on the human development index.

Head of State:
Ruler of the four regions, The Great Citizen, First-born son of the New World, Agosto Inca Tawantinsiyu

Constitution:
Proclamation of Miranda

Legislature:
People’s Assembly

Judicial:
People’s Judiciary

Established:
2317

Territory:
3 Systems

History:
The Bolivarian Federation was formed by the governments of Cuba, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Bolivia on the eve of the human race’s rapid colonization of the Orion Spur for the purpose of expanding the leftist dreams of its beleaguered members to the stars. The federation established its first colony on Bolivar in the mid-2100s, creating further settlements in Miranda and Valencia in the decades after.

The first years on Bolivar were objectionable to say the least and thousands starved to death on multiple occasions when supply ships failed to arrive, and the colonial administration refused foreign assistance in the face of famine. By this point in its history, the nation had already devolved into de facto dictatorship; flagrant incompetency, idiocy, and corruption was ignored in the accumulation of power by its leaders.

The late-2200s marked the beginning of the first of many Creole rebellions. The world of Nouvo Ayiti, primarily settled by the Haitian people, had been neglected and abused by its Bolivarian overlords since its colonization. The intense resentment and hatred for the Federation bubbling on the moon exploded into a full-blown insurrection following the murder of two innocent teenagers by the federal police force. This event would set off one of the bloodiest conflicts in the history of the Orion Spur, a conflict that is ongoing even today.

The first rebellion, led by the defected Bolivarian Navy Captain Romain Guerrier, raged across every corner of the Miranda System for decades with a fury that had been previously unimaginable to the leaders of the Federation. The nation’s garrisons on Nouvo Ayiti were overwhelmed in a matter of days by seemingly endless hordes of millions upon millions of Haitians, who armed themselves with whatever they could find. Reports of Bolivarian being lynched were rampant, as were those of Haitians being shot on sight by the garrison in the days before its defeats; sadly, all of this was true.

The Battle of Siprann Station was the culmination of this first war, where Admiral Gregorio Valles, who had been given supreme command of the Bolivarian Armed Forces by the government in its desperation to end the incredibly draining conflict, annihilated the Nouvo Ayisyen fleet led by Romain Guerrier in a spectacular battle above the skies of Nouvo Ayiti. His decisive victory over Guerrier, a genius commander who had menaced the Federation for decades, elevated him to a near legendary status across Bolivaria. It was thanks to this sheer popularity that he was able to overthrow the government in 2317 with the support of the Amerindian tribes, who were won over by Valles’ promise to empower them with the installation of an Inca.

Since then, Miranda has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Orion Spur and Nouvo Ayiti has been effectively quarantined by the Bolivarian regime, with nearly all foreigners being barred from travelling to the moon. The beautiful jungles, sandy shores, and exquisite resorts of Miranda, untouched by the modern world, attract billions annually willing to turn a blind eye to the nation’s rampant human rights abuses in exchange for an affordable vacation, or simply not aware of them. On the planet there exists two separate worlds, that of the average citizen and that which a tourist sees. Every segment of life is tightly controlled by the government and residents are packed into overcrowded megacities away from the attractions of the planet.

Military:
The Bolivarian People’s Armed Forces, comprised of the Army and the Navy, is the primary military force of the State of Bolivaria. Perhaps the only capable and effective part of the state apparatus, albeit riddled with corruption and rampant nepotism, the armed forces serve to defend the nation’s territory from attack, carry out the will of the people, and ensure the continuation of the Bolivarian Revolution.

The Bolivarian People’s Army, numbering more than a hundred million, is the hammer of the state and maintains authority across its territory. These soldiers, however, are ill-equipped and poorly trained for the most part, leading the bulk of them to be kept in reserve while the competent few are deployed to man important outposts, as well as to combat the seemingly never-ending insurgency on Nouvo Ayiti.

The Bolivarian People’s Navy is comprised of nearly ten thousand vessels, the majority of which are smaller frigates intended for patrolling Bolivarian space. Most of these ships are outdated, poorly maintained, and sourced from a variety of both western and eastern nations; it is but the sheer size of the fleet that makes it a noteworthy force.

Summary:
Modern day Germany is among one of the greatest powers in the Orion Spur, with a GDP that is among the highest, if not the highest, of the non-superpowers of the spur. Germany is on the cutting edge of technology, specifically when it comes to engineering, and many of its systems enjoy a relatively strong infrastructure as a result. With the United States retracting itself from the politics of foreign powers, Germany has stepped up as the leading nation of the Federation of the Atlantic Treaty. This has caused Germany to greatly increase its military budget, giving it a military quite capable of defending itself and its allies, and encourage peace as a diplomatic option rather than all out warfare. Although Germany does not expect American assistance in any war, it still makes one of its primary foreign policy goals lasting friendship with both America, and any other democracy in the spur, in an effort to curtail the more expansionist powers.

The Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany

Judicial:
Federal Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht)

Established:
1945 (West Germany)
1990 (Reunification)

Territory:
7 Systems, 7 planets and 3 moons

History:
After a rather active 20th century, Germany was able to enjoy relative peace and prosperity during the first half of the 21st century, and even onto the second half, until the European Union broke apart in 2070. The break up sent the German Economy into a recession that lasted until 2080, after which it began to rebound. This upward trend in its Economy was boosted well beyond a normal economic upturn when alien technology was discovered on Pluto, and Germany was one of the first nations to gain access to this immense boon, which helped Germany continue its growth and development of new technology.

Germany was among one of the first nations to begin colonization outside of the Sol system, after playing a not insignificant part in the joint colonization of several bodies in the Sol system itself. Germany's early colonization efforts were great successes for the nation as a whole, and helped further inspire colonization efforts both from Germany and Europe at large. This early head start has allowed Germany's colonies in the spur to be among the best humanity has to offer by the beginning of the 25th century, with many of them being considered works of art due to the nation's long standing environmentalist policies, and their experience with and emphasis on green technologies. Germany was also among one of the first nations to willingly move its capital after the UN passed its Neutrality Legislation, an act of goodwill towards the word of the UN by the German people.

Germany, however, has not been able to maintain a perfect golden age despite these successes, primarily due to America's growing isolationism. No longer could they rely on the United States to help keep out the Russian bear to the east, or the more distant Chinese dragon, let alone pirates within their own territory. This has forced Germany to once again shift its focus upon its military might, a pursuit it had abandoned in the 21st century, and even well into the 22nd. Officer schools that had existed since the days of mighty Prussia were reopened and revamped, as westpoint closed itself to the west. Meanwhile, shipyards that once churned out some of the most impressive colony ships ever built slowly were re-purposed to produce warships of impressive efficiency, and the Germany army once again became a force to be reckoned with, all in the name of safeguarding the freedom of the people of Europe and beyond.

As America retracted from the alliance, becoming a member in mostly name only, German ships and soldiers became a more common sight in any operations conducted by the Federation of the Atlantic Treaty, and even more so in UN operations. Germany has striven to participate in any war involving a member of the alliance, earning it a reputation as a peacekeeper and defender of liberty, and more importantly, valuable experience in actual combat and feedback on all of its military equipment, which it exports to various states across the spur, making German built weaponry a common sight among wealthier states in the spur. On top of all this, as of 2332, Germany had begun lending aid to any alliance nation undergoing any sort of colonization effort, with the explicit purpose of ensuring the western bloc simply outgrows all of its rivals in the spur.

Currently, Germany is involved with two terraforming projects within its own borders, along with several projects aimed at expanding its presence among many of the smaller celestial bodies within its systems. Germany is also preparing an expedition beyond current known space, with the intent of preparing a second wave of colonization.

Military:
As of 2451, the German military is among the strongest in the spur, fueled by its incredible economy. The Bundeswehr is split into two main branches, the Deutsche Heer (army) and the Deutsche marine (navy), with the Luftwaffe having been long since integrated into either the Navy or the Army, due to the shrinking necessity for a purely in atmosphere airforce. While not an official militarized branch of the Bundeswehr, the Joint Support Service exists primarily to handle logistical concerns across the Federation of the Atlantic Treaty, having long since evolved past its role as an interbranch logistics organization. The Joint Medical Service also exists into the 25th century, though primarily as a humanitarian organization that works closely with larger UN humanitarian services.

The Deutsche Heer is responsible for ground operations across any planetary body the German military may find itself fighting upon. The Heer itself is an exceptional fighting force, with its men and women being well renowned as some of the best standard infantry within the western bloc. On top of this, the Heer has created an incredibly strong officer corp for itself, giving its already exceptional troops equally exceptional leadership. The Heer itself focuses on high mobility warfare, based around cutting off portions of the opposing army from each other, cutting off their communications and supply lines, and bringing more forces on the field in any single engagement, even when there are less soldiers on a front as a whole.

The Deutsche Marine mirrors the Heer in its Quality over Quantity philosophy, favoring expensive well designed ships over less expensive alternatives. In order to compensate for a lower number of ships, German naval ships are designed to be able to patrol larger swathes of space with high top speeds and high quality sensor suites. In larger engagements, German fleets adopt a system similar, but far more advanced, to the AEGIS system used by western ocean going navies during the 21st century. The German Navy also operates a small but elite Marine force, based heavily upon the famous United States Marine Corp in organizational structure, and specifically designed to be able to deploy all of their forces in as little time as possible and overwhelm initial planetary defenses through shock and awe.

The Joint Support Service is an organization dedicated to the logistical concerns associated with interstellar military campaigns throughout the Federation of the Atlantic Treaty, and is responsible for supplying both Army and Navy assets, along with the construction of refueling and repair stations throughout German space. The Joint Support Service is subordinate to the Army and Navy in terms of war, but in times of peace is largely independent.

The Joint Medical Service handles Humanitarian operations across the Federation of the Atlantic Treaty, and is made up of high quality medical personal, who's field of expertise range from combat wounds to containment and treatment of dangerous diseases, and anything inbetween. During times of war, the Joint Medical Service lends all of its resources to the front.
