how did they become a member of the group? how did they meet the leader?
She became a member of the group after the group had crossed paths with her old group. She wasn't treated well because of her race and gender. but her previous group wouldn't let her leave. thanks to the group leader, she got away from her previous group. She considers the group to be her second family.

Full Name: Samuel Andrews
Nickname(s): "Sam"
Age: 34
Gender: Male
Faceclaim:
0x0.png

Role: Sharpshooter

Are they good at their role?
Pretty good. Sam can do some fancy shoting with his modified Spencer carbine and Colt Single Action Army revolver. He’s been known to win shooting contests in frontier towns and is often relied upon when things get hairy. His sharpshooting skills were honed during long days in the saddle during the Civil War, picking off Confederate supply guards and scouts during Grierson's Raid.

How did they become a member of the group?
Sam first met the group's leader in Kansas, where they were both helping a small farming town deal with a gang of cattle rustlers. Impressed by Sam’s aim, the leader asked him to stick around for the long haul. Sam saw an opportunity to find purpose again after drifting for years following the war and agreed.

Likes:
Wide-open prairies and sunsets
Cleaning and maintaining his firearms
Card games, especially poker
Campfire storytelling
Honest, hard-working people

Dislikes:
Cowards or deserters
Crooked lawmen
Large, rowdy crowds
The sound of distant thunder (it reminds him of cannon fire)

Fears:
Failing someone who depends on him
Dying without having made peace with his past
Being caught off guard in battle

Hobbies:
Target practice, often shooting tin cans or bottles
Sketching landscapes and battlefields in a small leather notebook
Whittling small wooden figurines
Playing the harmonica by the fire

Habits:
Runs his thumb over his Spencer carbine’s trigger guard when deep in thought
Whistles softly while riding
Checks the wind direction before firing, even when it isn’t necessary
Drinks coffee at night to “keep watch,” even when it isn’t his turn

Body Modifications/Scars:
A bullet scar on his left shoulder from the Battle of Newton’s Station
A faded knife scar across his right forearm from a bar brawl in Memphis
Small burn marks on his hands from handling overheated rifle barrels during battle

Date of Birth: February 10, 1836
Place of Birth: Springfield, Illinois

Personality:
Sam is the epitome of the strong, silent type, but beneath his calm exterior lies a sharp wit and a good-natured spirit. He’s fiercely loyal as the group’s protector. He doesn’t waste words, believing actions speak louder. He is disciplined but not rigid, capable of bending the rules when the situation calls for it. Although he seems collected most of the time, he wrestles with inner demons from the war that occasionally surface during quiet nights.

History/Backstory:
Sam was born on a small farm outside Springfield, Illinois, where he grew up learning to ride and shoot at a young age. His father, a veteran cavalry officer of the Mexican-American War, taught him marksmanship and horse riding skill, instilling a sense of discipline that would shape him for years to come. When the Civil War broke out, 25-year-old Sam volunteered to enlist for the 7th Illinois Cavalry, eager to defend the Union. His competency earned him a spot in Grierson’s Raid in 1863, the raid would see 3 union cavalry regiments rode over 600 miles through hostile territory from southern Tennessee, through the State of Mississippi and into Union-held Baton Rouge, Louisiana, over routes no Union soldier had traveled before. They tore up railroads and burned crossties, freed slaves, burned Confederate storehouses, destroyed locomotives and commissary stores, ripped up bridges and trestles, burned buildings, and inflicted ten times the casualties they received. In December 1864, the 7th Illinois Cavalry fought in the decisive Battle of Nashville, saw action in Columbia, Spring Hill, and the Battle of Franklin, where Sam's unit disrupted Confederate supply lines and engaged retreating forces. After the Battle of Nashville, the Army of Tennessee ceased being an effective fighting force.

After the war, Sam returned home only to find that his family farm had been sold off to pay debts. With nothing left, he drifted across the Midwest, working odd jobs as a ranch hand, scout, and sharpshooter for hire. Eventually, his path led him westward, where he encountered the group that gave him a renewed sense of purpose.

Appearance Description:
Sam stands around 6’1” with a lean, athletic build developed from years of riding and combat. His sun-weathered skin speaks to a life lived outdoors, and his dark brown hair is often hidden beneath a well-worn Stetson. He has a thick mustache. His eyes are a piercing blue. He typically wears a long leather duster, a faded flannel shirt, and brown riding boots. His belt carries the US Cavalry issued Colt SAA revolver on the right side and a hunting knife on the other side.

Romantic Orientation: Heteroromantic
Sexuality Orientation: Heterosexual

Headcanons/Fun Facts:
The harmonica he plays was given to him by a friend he lost during the war.
He once saved a widow’s ranch from foreclosure by using his poker winnings to pay off her debt.
He prefers listening to others’ stories over sharing his own.
Despite his serious demeanor, he has a soft spot for stray cats.

Horse Info
Name of Horse: Calico
Breed: Appaloosa
Gender: Mare
How long has your OC owned their horse?: 4 years. Sam found Calico while working as a ranch hand in Nebraska. The horse had a reputation for being stubborn and difficult, but Sam’s patient approach won her over.
