It was a rainy day in Los Angeles. Rowan hadn't been prepared for the water falling from the sky when they went out that morning. It was supposed to have just been a quick errand run around the block, but the rain had started pouring down while they had been browsing the convenience store a few blocks away from their apartment. Rowan eyed the doors outside the building they were currently in, adjusting their hoodie and headphones as they contemplated on waiting out the weather. Sure they could maybe wait for things to dry off enough that they wouldn't get soaked on their way home, but it had been a long shift and they really just wanted to get home, eat, then pass out. The only thing between them and a blissfully quiet night was the threat of getting wet.

With a sigh, Rowan grabbed some chips off the shelves to round out their dinner of beef jerky and a pre-made sandwich and took their items up to the checkout of the store. Rowan gave a brief smile to the clerk before dropping some cash on the counter. "It sure did start pouring down all of a sudden out there, didn't it?" The cashier chirped out. Dark blue eyes swept back to the older blonde behind the counter. Rowan just nodded as they pulled up their hood. They had just dyed their hair, they didn't want it running on their way home. Black hair dye was a pain to get out of anything. As Rowan was getting ready for what would be a mad dash to their apartment, the bell above the door tinkled as someone entered the store. "Welco-" The cashier started before there was a sickening wet sound. Rowan looked up and almost lost what little was in their stomach. In the woman's eye was a dagger. The cashier fell backward behind the counter with a thud as the black-haired non-binary turned to look toward where the dagger seemed to have come from. What was there was beyond words. Rowan's brain didn't give them time to decipher exactly what the threat was besides not human before they were tripping over their own feet to get as far away from the corpse and whatever the hell that was. They hadn't made it halfway down the aisle before whatever it was had caught up and was knocking over the young adult. Rowan let out a scream as they crashed to the floor, hands reaching out to try and grab anything that might serve as a weapon or defense against whatever this creature was. The creature let out a sound that almost sounded like a laugh before slamming its new victim's face into the ground. Rowan let out a sob as the pain went through their cheek and forehead. Again their head was lifted off the floor. Again the creature slammed it down. This time Rowan didn't make a noise, black taking over their vision.

Today was like any other, at least in James's case. Work was tedious as ever, no time to relax, no time to eat. He had gone to the convenience store to get a few drinks, some of which would numb him. Then, suddenly, he heard the unmistakable sound of..

Meat.

Yes, that's what it was. The lovely, innocent cashier had been stabbed in the eye with what looked like a dagger. Laughing to himself, he retrieved a large pistol from his belt, following the sound of more

being slammed down on the floor. This would not be tolerated. He pointed it at the creature, one that wasn't hiding in a human guise. A single shot rang out in the store, causing the creature's head to splatter across the floor as its body was reduced to dust. That was when he saw Rowan. But they were still alive. How?

Never mind that, he picked them up, gently, like a child, and took them away, somewhere where they could be safe, away from the monsters that plagued the city and the rest of this world. If Rowan did wake up, they would find themselves in what looked like a hospital room, but something was.. different. Although the air reeked of chemicals and medicine, it was cold and somewhat dank, like they were underground.
