Technically this is a fandom based on the Netflix movie, How It Ends. But with original characters and starting at the beginning. Plus I have fleshed things out a bit.

GPS Service fails
Power goes out across the country
Fires and destruction in cities
Note: Cars still function

Aurora Borealis globally for days
Dependent on location
Crashed airplanes - Either you see an aircraft in the sky when it starts or you don’t. Eventually you will see wreckage on the ground though.
Strange weather conditions - heat, storms, lightning
Frequent earthquakes for 6+ days in NW USA and along the San Andreas
Volcanic Ash in NW USA (There will be other sources.)
Effects:
Loss of GPS, Internet and Power shuts down all commercial air travel.
Loss of Power shuts down gas stations. Generators may keep grocery stores going for a little while, but shelves will soon be bare. There will be price gouging, violence, and such as people revert to Us/Them ways.
There will be major traffic jams.
The National Guard will turn back all west bound traffic.
By the end of the first week it will get really bad. The death toll will reach well into the millions.
