The Core
It was initially celebrated as a cure for cancer. For the first four months the results looked up. Families were overjoyed as their brothers, mothers, and sisters were cured. People flocked to hospitals and doctors offices to take the cure. Soon enough it was selling in Walgreens and CVS. Anywhere you could get a regular flu shot, you could get the cure. In that way it was effectively spread throughout the world.

It began as a series of heart attacks. A rapid change in the person’s heartbeat, blood pressure, and temperature. Only a few died in the beginning. Multiple tests were done, and as the number of deaths grew higher the ones who hadn’t taken the cure scoffed. They weren’t safe either. The virus, as many bio-engineered viruses do, became airborne. The cure, now dubbed as the Core, was 85% lethal. Almost everybody who took it died. Almost.

The planet suffered enormous losses. Almost five billion people died as the Core was transported from country to country through trade and pests. Of the two billion left, only 20% were immune. Some of that 20% were immune only to the airborne disease, and transferring of the Core through blood could prove lethal for them. The other 80% of people turned.

They were called Stalkers.

Stalkers
They are the ones who grew pale, cold and clammy. The beginning stages of transformation were quite difficult to live through. First, the patient’s heart rate rises. Followed by temperature, blood pressure, and an influx of fast growing muscle tissue. As the body changes, bones are restructured and skin becomes extremely sensitive to UV rays. When the body has finished mutating, they are vampire-like humanoids who hunger for flesh.

Stalkers hunt by sight, their eyes highly receptive to movement. Their senses of hearing and smell are diminished, a little less effective than a normal human. They are extremely strong and fast, and endurance is not a problem. These creatures have a hunger that can never fully be sated, as their rapid heart rate and new muscle mass take up much of the needed energy they have.

They often frequent urban areas, swarms of them banding together during the night to hunt and sleep during the day. They hide beneath bridges and abandoned buildings. Subway tunnels are a favoured place for them to stay. Groups of Stalkers are coherent and interchanged. They have a single hierarchy, including one chieftain who directs hunts and occasional skirmished with other groups, and the rest are hunters. They have the same communication and social skills as humans, though they speak in grunts and whines.

Killing them is relatively easy. Stalkers are not built as tanks, and a shot through the heart or head will keep them down. If you cannot place a shot that well, multiple wounds can stagger a Stalker enough for you to get away. The only problem is that they hunt in packs.

Haven
Our story is set in the suburb of Edina, Minnesota. Haven is the new name for the town, and the general population of survivors is around 400. Haven has flourished through the months, with giant metal and planked walls being constructed around it. There are two entry points, one on the very east wall and another on the north wall. Every member of Haven has a job, whether it be keeping the peace, gardening, cooking, or acting as a doctor. Nobody is homeless here, and every person over the age of 17 works.

Rovers
We play as a team of “Rovers.“ We are the ones who scout outside the walls, find nests of Stalkers, and eliminate them. Oftentimes we gather supplies and ammo from the outside. We do have other jobs as well, which will be up to you. Rovers are the toughest of the tough, each one hand selected and trained. We are the protectors, providers, and most of all, leaders.
