Realistic or Modern Hereditary

Derpy Dev

to nobody's surprise he's not straight
This quest is entirely sandbox. I will be giving you no options other than do what you want. So say what you want to do, and vote on other people's ideas of what should be done.
Ready? Then lets begin.

As you served tables at the restaurant known as Smokey's Big BBQ Hut, you felt a sudden change. You felt as if the entire world just shattered, and you dropped the bowl of rolls you were bringing. You had to sit down to fully comprehend what just happened.
Your father had just died, and you inherited his powers.

But first, let us decide who you are. What is your name and gender?

Ah yes. Mora. Daddy's little girl. As it had always been.

But was he really dead? What happened? You could only get his powers upon his death, and he couldn't have died of old age at 53, so that wasn't it old age...

The voice of the manager brought you back to reality. "What's the problem girl? You wanna keep your job?" You should probably resist the urge to say, "Screw you I have superpowers," as the identity of Fairytale is a closely guarded family secret...

Apologize and only curse him when he leaves. If my dad is dead, it won't do me any good to lose my job. And what even are my powers now?

The power of "Fairytale" was to draw objects and forces from art. It is only limited by your surroundings.

He showed you quite a few times. Testing them out was always hard, as you had to find a place with nobody watching and lots of pictures, which was a rarity. He was a master at using it, conjuring soldiers from books and cars from catalogs on a whim. As long as there is an image, there is something your power can rely on.

With an eyebrow raised by the bald man, he walked off and left you to your work. The rest of the shift was boring and normal, but with a bit more tension coming from the fact that everything felt... different. Pictures seemed to stand out more and distracted you a few times. Guess that was Fairytale at work.

After finishing up for the day, you stand outside the restaurant. Tomorrow is a Saturday, so you can take a day off to get a hang of this ability or find out what happened to dad.

Take a day off to get a hang of this ability.

Dads dead and not getting deader, the powers are new however. Training first. Investigation later.

Immediately start a scrap book to fill with useful things to draw from. Invest in a collection of markers and chalk if you can empower drawings, maybe a few chalk pens for easy clean up.

Work out the limits of the ability.

Can you take images from a screen(phone/tablet/laptop/tv/electronic billboard), test on something you don't care about in case of damage?

How basic can an image be? Will an arrow drawn with chalk be enough to crate a vector force or does it need more detail?

Is intent of the image determined by the image or by the caster? ie If you summon a gust of wind from the picture of a storm is the strength determined by the image or the needs of the caster? Will it move from the image directly at a target, be summoned at a place of choosing and move in a straight line or can the gust be directed at will?

Are object summoned from the image to a directed spot (like it popped from the page) or can they be summoned a place of choosing (disappearing form the page and appearing at a directed location)?

Do images scale to need or default to standard size. ie. can you grab the image of a plank of wood and scale it up to block a road?

How permanent are these things? Is there a time limit or will it last as long as needed?

Does the ability take energy? If so, how much? Does it scale with size? Can you train to increase energy consumption/capacity?

After all that, go visit your dad to see what happened.

Going to visit him was not what you needed to find out what happened. It was all over the news when the hero Fairytale died. What happened was odd. According to the news, a large mob of people randomly started yelling and screaming at him. The situation escalated, police got involved, and someone fired a bullet into dad's head. The police took the body to prevent everyone from finding out his identity.

There are so many things wrong with that that I can't even list them all in this post. The main one was this: why did they turn violent?

Mora's hands are gonna be pretty full.

First, you pulled out a sketchpad and some chalk and draw a simple line. It didn't even stand out, and felt no different than anything else. Wouldn't work. Same happened with a picture on a phone. It needed more detail but couldn't be digital.

Then, you drew a triangle. That felt like something. You motioned toward it and... it felt like grabbing a heavy object and trying to lift. There was resistance, but no physical weight. After spending about ten seconds on it, a massive triangle a little bigger than a car popped into existence in front of you and fell onto the floor. Detail might not be what is necessary. Fairytale filled in the uncolored space in the middle with white, so color wasn't needed either. Why did the triangle work but not the line?

Drawing a bunch of lines together to make a gust of wind didn't seem to work for some reason. Why not? What did this image not have that a triangle did?

Wind-clip-art-images-free-clipart-5.png

Slightly frustrated about how that did not work, you tried something else: a rolling wheel. After a bit of struggle you pulled it from the page and dropped it into reality. You have control over which direction it faces when entering our world, and it rolls in that direction, but it doesn't seem like you can effect it any differently than a normal person can effect a rolling wheel after it comes in. Initial control, but no permanent control.

Where it comes from is easy to answer. To pull an image out you have to touch it with you hand and then swing your hand outward. It appears at your fingertips when the motion is complete, with no further control over its starting location.

This one took quite a bit of experimentation. You can control its size when coming in, but how long it takes to pull out is dependent upon its size, and it goes up to that of a car. But if you don't give its size any mind when bringing it in, it goes automatically to the size you'd expect it to be, so a wheel comes in as big as a wheel unless you think it should be bigger or smaller. Expect for the triangle as big as a car, that one was just confusing.

Right now, they all seem to last about three minutes.

Besides the fact that your arm has gotten tired from you waving it around for half a day, Fairytale does not seem to run on a finite energy source, it just takes a bit of time.

After all of that it just passed two o'clock. You are a bit hungry after skipping lunch, as one would expect. Now what?

Hmm, 'wind' isn't an object per say but describing a mass in motion. The power is object orientated? Hmm. More testing required but that can wait. Maybe Dad left some notes somewhere.

Summoning is touch based, time vs size powered and hard limited to the volume of a car(rough estimate). Cool.

Only one question left really. Can we reproduce living things? If so, to what extent to they retain themselves? Could we take a few Polaroids of ourselves for a surprise attack or a little help during a battle? Does the allegiance of a copied being change if replicated? Do we dare try to find out? Is a picture of a picture good enough to summon from or does it just get you the picture you took the picture of?

But first, Lunch.

Also, Dad is dead. Really need to process that a little.

(How long ago did Dad die? Is Mum alive? Siblings? Other close relatives? Is there someone, family/friend, who is handling his estate or is following that up our responsibility? Is dad's body still with the cops?)

I vote for:
Late lunch drop in on (insert person here/need some choices). Maybe get some information. Defiantly get a hug.

Dad's body is still with the cops. What they plan on doing with him is beyond me.

Dad died the moment you felt the Change. That was how you got your powers, and you got them the exact second he died.

Mom is alive, just... out of town. Again. The fighting with dad had gotten worse, and she was leaving on "business trips" more and more often. She might not know yet.

You are good friends with a few of your cousins, but none of them are in town either. And no brothers or sisters either. Really, dad was your only immediate friend and family member.

Oh, OK. That changes things. Is Mum aware of Dad's powers and hero-ing?

How old are we?

Vote changed to:

After a quick lunch. Call Mum. If she hasn't called us, she shouldn't know. They might have grown apart but she should still help this last time, if only for us. Discuss what to do. Discuss who should claim the body. Work out what exactly one does about arranging for a funeral. Ask about his will and/or executor. (Have we ever discussed the matter? Does he have a lawyer we should talk to?) There is some time, being a Saturday nothing big should happen on this front until Monday, probably.

She is aware of the family power. It's been in the family for a good four generations now. You're twenty one.

Story is gonna progress once more people put in votes.

By the way... there is something important I've neglected to mention. All powers are hereditary. No new powers crop up, they pass to the closest relative upon death or to a friend of your choice if you don't like your family. But this means it is relatively easy to find a list of all the powers in the world, as they have all been around about as long as there have been humans.

Just thought you should know. Feel free to ask for a few of the powers people have if you're curious.

That's really important. Would there be a handy dandy wiki of all the powers and families? Is it possible to inherit more than one power? Has anyone ever tried the old highlander proposition of "there can only be one"? Can a power line be killed off? Has it ever been done?

What is the average hero/villain/other rate for super people?

Would there happen to be a telepathic or empathic family line?

Actually, can we get a rundown on the notable locals?

What city are we in?

Power lines cannot be killed off. Or at least, it hasn't happened before. We are all technically very, very distantly related, so if every other family member dies that could be some guy named Joe who gets your power even if you don't know him. People can get more than one power if two powered individual share a closest relative or choose the same person. But this person cannot give both of those powers to the same person, they would be given to the two closest relatives.

Most people with powers don't become superheroes or supervillains, they just pass the power along and only use it for personal use. Dad was an exception, and worked hard to protect his city.

There are quite a few telepaths, and many of them have become infamous for manipulating and driving some of the most horrid events in human history, like the Japanese Attempted Genocide, where a madman attempted to wipe everybody of japanese decent off the face of the planet. This did not go well, and most people with mind control don't mention or use it.

The city is known as Adams, named after its founder. Don't expect it to be real, this is a superhero setting.

Besides dad, there were only a couple of other powered individuals in Adams. One of them is the newest incarnation of Slice and is willing to do just about anything for a pretty penny, while the other one has the power Karma and still hasn't learned to control it, much to the dismay of everyone. Other than that, there aren't many people here that everybody knows the name of besides the mayor, Johnathan Endsworth.

After doing what Darkeva has specifically stated, go and call a friend. Maybe they could help?

As you finish lunch, you think about who to call except mom. You have a few friends at Smokey's, but you feel like they aren't the first you should tell about your new superpowers. Just as you were about to call her, you heard a knock on the door.

Where is she living? Apartment, house? Is there a way to get a glimpse of who is at the door without going to it? Baring that is there a peep hole?

You live in an apartment complex. You were kinda desperate to get out when the fighting began. There is no way to see who it is besides a peephole.

Also, go get some sort of weapon, just in case. Maybe a lamp, or some other heavy object. If you can't find anything useful, summon a sword and have a few drawings of weapons at hand if the need arises.

Approach the door and check the peep hole.

You approach the door.

Drawing a sword in your book, you ready yourself to pull it out at any time. Then, you look out the peephole to see a rather... odd looking man there. He stands smiling patiently, with his blue eyes and black hair. Something just looks off about him, especially the smile. It doesn't feel right. It feels wrong. He knocks again.

Do we know what the current Slice looks like?
Also, what floor are we on?
If you put a window on a wall does it open to the other side of the wall or to the place depicted in the picture?

Ask who it is through the door.
