Although he may seem cold and distant, it is because the King (his father) has fallen in love with the new, young Queen.
Crown Prince's mother had passed away recently and the King has been obsessed with the new queen, he has been upset about the King's infatuation.
Lots of responsibilities for this man and the one that he needs to trust most is his new, trusted eunuch.

The Eunuch

Born to hide her identity, she has to be dressed up as a boy to hide a big secret: she was supposed to be married to the Crown Prince.
She did not know this but her family did. Before telling the female that she was going to get married to the Crown Prince,
someone has slaughtered her whole family except her and her older sister when they were just kids.
Now that she has aged into a fine, young lady, with a street-smart and wise personality, she going to become the eunuch of the
Crown Prince, in hopes of finding what went on with her family. (Let's say she passed the eunuch test by cheating)

The 2nd Prince

An intellect, wise Prince. Everyone knows that he is the best when it comes to brains and he is highly respected.
Many of the citizens want the 2nd prince to be the next heir but all he wants to live a life full of knowledge and serenity.
Of course, this turns all upside down when a new scholar joins their group, causing trouble. He is the second eldest next to the Crown Prince.

The Scholar

She wants something different, and she will have to do it. Taking in the identity of her male friend to go to the palace to
study, she begins her journey in the palace, but the male scholar finds her to be a troublemaker.

The 5th Prince

The 5th Prince lives in the palace with his parents. A bit mischievous and playful, he often goes out hiding his identity so that
he can travel around the village without being respected and be in the center of attention. He saves the Female gisaeng
after she is being chased down by some angry men (can be because she tricked them or something) and has been
interested in her ever since. He decides to take her in as a female maiden servant so that she can be kept
out of trouble. Of course, getting close to a maiden servant means trouble when a jealous maiden
whose in love with the 5th Prince finds out. He is the youngest out of the three

The Maiden Servant

Life as a gisaeng, she doesn't want to live her life this way, but she had no choice.
Her parents sold her to the gisaeng at such a young age, she barely remembers it. She has many emotional wounds
and scars in her young life. Sassy and wise to men’s lusty hearts, Female doesn’t hesitate to use her wiles to get her way.
Deep down, from her strong determination, all she wants is to feel like she belongs somewhere. After running away from some
angry men, she bumps into the 5th Prince. He then gives her permission to become his "maiden servant" so that she can run away
from her gisaeng life under one condition: she will help him get out of the palace whenever he wants.

The General's Daughter

Her swordfighting ability is much better than the soldiers and her father's tough love has thickened her to not have any room for love for anyone. Deep down though, she wishes that she was more feminine and actually wants nothing more than love from someone else.

Although this is true, his parents have forced him to take on some sword fighting class, worried that he cannot defend himself after an accident. He's the softest person that one can meet, and the most popular one of all because of his good-natured heart. One thing he has as a fear: blood and death. Will he be able to overcome this fear with the general's daughter?

Usually referred to the hats worn by the noblemen.The hair was pulled into a topknot and a headband, manggeon, was used to hold the hair in place. Manggeon was also used to hold the headgears in place. The topknot was a sign of manhood for the men since they would start to wear their hair into a topknot when they got married.

A tall sature of 6'0, the Crown Prince stands out from a crowd if there was one... Of course the prince will not be allowed to do this since he is the treasure of the nation. The Crown Prince has no scar, a symbol of care and caution, even when having a friendly swordfight with his friends and the general who taught him. The Crown Prince is not fragile, but not too muscular either, enough for him to bear any weights (literally and metaphorically) as intended.

Proud, wise, quick-witted, strong-headed, and doesn't care what others think. That is the face of the Crown Prince. Well known to his harsh words and rebellious ways, if it's something that he should do with justice, he will do it, even it it means going against his father. Lim Yeon Woo is the kind of person who can just flutter beyond the skies, freely expression his expressions as needed.

Thanks to his mother who helped him stay sane in this crazy world of being controlled to act like this or that, Yeon Woo was able to create his own colors of his palette to let him become the person who he is today, instead of an all-round, perfect Crown Prince. Words don't hurt the Prince, bouncing off of him just like little specks of flies.

Lim Yeon Woo has times where he feels at home just sitting on top of the rooftop. Of course, his minions would tell him,
"Wonja, please don't stay up there and come back down before you get hurt."

Here upon the rooftop, reminded him of the days back then when his mother used to take him to this exact same rooftop to look at the beautiful moon. Another thing that he loved was jujube candies, something he always had been given by his mother.
Memories of the past filled up his mind before flooding away again, just a flowing river as time passed on.
His beloved brothers, someone who he cherished dearly, even if their status broke them apart.

Lim Yeon Woo hated the tasteless rumors, that spread like fire across the nation. Empty words that hurt others, hurt his mother, and his brothers are filled with bitter distaste in his mouth. The aroma of lavender. It reminds him of the new Queen since she loves the scent, which he dislikes.
It wasn't the young Queen's fault, but it was the fact that his father dare to forget about his wife's death just days after getting married.

The general stated to Yeon Woo. At a young age, Yeon Woo was taught to defend himself with a sword, spear, and bow and arrow.
Of course, archery was a form of art, something that many of the young scholars and higher noblemen were praised to do, so the Crown Prince needed to excel well in archery.
Another of the Crown Prince's fine arts is painting. It happened to come to him after all since his mother loved painting, taught by a well-known painter.
What's the best that Yeon Woo was the greatest at? It had to be absolutely acting. Was he hurt from the rumors? Yeon Woo could make an expression so painful, that the ministers will have to cheer him up, with the purpose of hurting him instead. Behind that facade of the mask would be Yeon Woo, snickering at the people's harsh, tasteless words that meant nothing to him.
Yeon Woo also was forced to learn the gayageum, a Korean instrument, and forced to take classes with the scholars about poetry (which he sucked at but was still forced to do it).

A bit stubborn, quick to act, Yeon Woo is never afraid to do what he thinks is right, but that the problem-- he does rash actions without thinking.

About 99% of the time when Yeon Woo is being too impatient about things, he would often get a beating from his butt. Yes. The Crown Prince gets a beating, but just one. Hard. Blow.

Does he still learn from his actions? Nope. Very rebellious to his father and short tempered, a bad combination when you get one from your mother, and another one from your father.

Birth of the Crown Prince

"Jeonha! The birth of the Crown Royal Prince has been born!"

The eunuch exclaimed, hurrying in the King's exquisite room. The King, with a worried expression, hurried to the Queen's quarters, heading inside the room to see little Lim Yeon Woo crying with all of his strength.

"What shall we name him, my dear?" The king's facial expression softened at the look of the little child beyond him, gently holding him.

"My lord, we should call him Yeon Woo. Like nature, he will find his purpose in life." The Queen softly smiled, her lips pale from the labor.

"Wonja, please don't do this!" One of the older eunuchs exclaimed, following little Yeon Woo around. The Queen laughed at his mischievous personality, much like hers.

"It's okay, he won't get hurt." The Queen calmly watched his son run around the plum tree.

Young Yeon Woo stared at the moon with his mother by his side, both covered by a big blanket.
"Omamama, do you ever think that it is hard to rule over the nation?" Curious Yeon Woo questioned his mother. With a bright smile on her face, staring at the big moon in front of them, she shook her head.

"My child. The existence of the palace and nation is not because of us. It is because of the people that guide us is what makes a great nation. Not a great King."

All the wisdom, carefree world was because of the existence of Yeon Woo's mother, the Queen. Because of her, the world was a better place. It is said that the Palace is livable if you have someone you care, and because of Yeon Woo and the Queen's existence for each other, it was tolerable, no matter how harsh Yeon Woo's teaching and learning was from his teachers and father, no matter how much he's fallen and scraped his knee if his mother was there to help him, he felt like he could do this.

Of course, by the end of his childhood years, his mother had handed him a jade hairpin, something that was supposed to be given to his "bride-to-be" but nothing really happened as the years passed by...

Mother's Last Breath

Just like Yeon Woo's childhood years, it was bearable because of his mother. His father was never really seen, and whenever Yeon Woo saw the King, a bright, cheerful expression would immediately turn into a serious one, frozen in place.

"How could you teach the Crown Prince with an attitude like that?!" The King would exclaim to the Queen in Yeon Woo's presence. "If you teach him like this, how will he lead the nation?!"

By the time Yeon Woo was a teenager, he had taught himself to become more self-composed in front of the King. Like his mother says, "As long as there's an act in front of you that you need to put on a show, do it to please the audience and turn yourself back the way you are."

It was a warm, quiet night when Yeon Woo's mother suddenly got ill.

"Omamama!" Yeon Woo cried at the side of his mother's bed.
"Has the King gotten the message yet?" She would constantly ask. Her maiden servant would shake her head with disappointment. With a bittersweet look on her face, she managed to give Yeon Woo a small smile on her face.
"My dear," she weakly said. "No matter how long time passes, I wish you will find the way of your purpose. Be who you are and don't let anyone control your life." She managed to speak before she closed her eyes. "Your mother will always love you and keep watch of you."

And those were the last words she said before she quietly passed on. Yeon Woo could only scream in anger and pain. His father never made the promise to visit her, even with her last letter to the King.

Little did they know that the little plot to keep the King within the new, young Queen's hands were the reason why the King never got the message of his wife's passing.

Yeon Woo had his mother's funeral, mourning by himself while his father had the wedding day right after the death of his wife. His father was busy, never having time to be able to even visit his mother even for just a little bit. It was a wave of growing anger and disappointment to his father. Yeon Woo then promised himself that he would never become like his father.

A New Beginning

Older, wise, and stronger than ever, Yeon Woo vowed to never let anything tear him down again. Just like his mother, he needed to put on a facade and a show for the people of the Palace. It was important that he should help his people in the nation, not have them help him. It was then that Yeon Woo began to be wise on his own, little by little, without his mother's help, without the hurt and pain of other people's words.

It was time that Yeon Woo would set his own stone and marking whenever his father passed away. He wanted to walk in the shoes of the commoner, to be able to feel, learn, and breathe like one so that the Crown Prince, soon the King in the future, can help his people in need just like how they help him. Of course, with all of the trouble, rebellious attitude, and cold demeanors, it doesn't help when they change his eunuch because none of them can't handle him...

The 3rd Prince

Yeon Woo rarely sees Seowoo because he is always out volunteering. Back in the days when they were young, Yeon Woo had scraped his knees slightly when playing with Seowoo and it caused Seowoo to nearly faint at the sight of blood. He's aware of the 3rd Prince's fear of blood and wants to protect him away from his fears. Seowoo is very kind towards Yeon Woo which he appreciates and had volunteered a couple of times with him before. He often goes to the 3rd Prince to ask for advice how to approach the commoners.

The 5th Prince

Yeon Woo practically grew up with Dae Hyun because he was under Yeon's Woo's mother care until she had passed. Throughout the years that they were together, Yeon Woo never felt like they were strangers at all. In fact, it was more likely that Dae Hyun was like a blood brother to him since his mother had raised the both of them until she had passed. He always had a soft side for Dae Hyun and he was always so playful, it always comforted Yeon Woo to know that there was someone who was so light-hearted that lived in the Palace. Yeon Woo tries really hard to play the "big brother" role towards Dae Hyun, secretly finding ways to hide him away from all of the troubles in the Palace.

Yeon-Ju is a woman of many faces. On the surface she is known for being feisty and flirtatious, but in reality it has become a means of survival for the young woman. In her ideal world she would be much more modest and reserved. In fact, she would rather spend her time exploring and even mingling with nature. She enjoys the calm and serene that comes with the outdoors, although her obligations keep her away from it. Quintessentially, the woman has come to adopt two different personalities entirely: one for her clients and one for herself.

When alone Yeon-Ju is very much an idealist. She daydreams about the life she could have had and how she wishes things could be. Arguably she is quite often stuck within her own head. In some sense it serves as an escape from trauma she very much tries to distance herself from. She bears emotional scars and it leads to being a rather sensitive individual when faced to confront it. Fortunately, she has learned to be perseverant in more ways than one. She is a fighter and will simply refuse to give up.

Although Yeon-Ju possesses certain opinions she is afraid to voice them, being well aware of the consequences if a woman of such lowly status dares to speak out to her superiors. Instead, she simply remains silent giving off the impression of being a proper well-mannered and obedient woman. This, at least, is what she wants most to believe of her as a form of self-preservation. She is clever and has derived many ways to survive and even thrive in the world she has been thrust into. This includes resorting to less than savory means to get what she wants. She is cunning and not afraid to use it to her advantage; hence adopting different mannerisms for different situations she finds herself in. She does, however, wish to some day have the freedom to be genuine to who she wants to be: that is of someone who is adventurous with a drive to simply enjoy life to the fullest.

Life has never been easy for Yeon-Ju. Born into a poor family, she and her sister were always forced to work hard and still barely scrape by. Survival became somewhat of a family effort and by a stroke of luck(or by miracle) they made it work. For a time. It was when Yeon-Ju's sister came down with a mysterious illness that the difficulties began once more. She grew sicker and sicker while few doctors were willing to treat her at all due to social status. By the age of 12 the girl had passed away. Yeon-Ju was 10.

Distressed and desperate, Yeon-Ju's father began to gamble. He did it in hopes of winning money to support his family, but in reality he found himself falling deeply into debt. With debt came further depression. With depression came reliance on the bottle. With the bottle came further debt. With heavy debt the family was soon faced with the reality of paying it off. In lacking the means they were left with little choice but to sell off their daughter to the highest bidder. Very soon she found herself sold into the life of a gisaeng.

Yeon-Ju's life as a gisaeng was not easy. The master she found herself in the hands of was an elderly and bitter man. Unfortunately he was also rather cruel. He was not afraid to deliver harsh punishment for even the smallest of misdeeds. More than once the girl found herself being abused by the man. Under his control, she quickly learned swift obedience and also to never speak out of turn. She secretly despised both, but often it was obey or be beaten again. Very soon the reality sank in, allowing her to focus almost exclusively on mastering the skills that were now necessary to the life she lived. Like most of her status, she began to be trained extensively in the arts, and especially how to keep the upper classes entertained.

Life became rather routine for Yeon-Ju. Mostly it consisted of sleeping, eating, training, and attending social functions when requested. She even came to gain some enjoyment in spending time with the other gisaeng women, even if only to get away from their cruel master. It was much needed solace from the days of work, but she liked to believe solace would be more permanent upon the death of her master. Unfortunately, she was wrong. Instead, she was simply resold and forced to continue living the life she was bound to.

While Yeon-Ju's new master proved to be a significant improvement over her former due to his more compassionate nature, she was still not entirely happy. She longed for more, namely a life where she was free to make her own choices. Forgetting everything that had been expected of her under her previous master, she began to freely express herself as long as she was behind closed doors. She became known as a feisty woman, which only made many of her clients like her even more. Frustration began to further fill the woman, making her long for true freedom even more. It was only upon meeting a prince for the first time that her desires for freedom finally appeared possible to fulfill.

the new young lady of the jeong house!

admittedly, hye-eun grew up rather spoilt, at least in terms of her family background. she came from a yangban family, the youngest and only daughter of an official who would sat somewhere near the back during meetings with the emperor. a rank in which he didn't particularly excel, but made enough to allow the family to live luxuriously. she never really got much attention from her parents when she was younger, though hye-eun never found it an issue that they cared more about her two older brothers' futures at the time. she was left under the care of her nanny and a maid, the former a strict lady with a soft spot for the young lady, the latter a slave girl named mi-ryeong, only a year or two older than her.

her nanny was in charge of her first lessons as a child, teaching her etiquette and literacy, but with an added bonus of trying to instil in the girl interest in literature and politics. well, obviously, hye-eun had no interest in such things when she was young, preferring the company of her older cousin who came from a military family and as such, was well-versed in the art of combat. she insisted she'd be a swordsman instead of any dirty old book reader, though when she failed to even bear the weight of a blade, he'd taught her archery instead. even at her tender age, hye-eun was already quite the active child, and horribly unladylike, at that. her cousin thought it would be a phase that she outgrew.

the beginnings of a scholar

as she slowly matured, as the seed that her nanny had planted in her flourished. by the age of sixteen, she'd had the makings of a scholar and close to the knowledge to back it up. it was more interesting than she'd given it credit for, she supposed. but growing up wasn't without its downsides. her brothers were now old enough, with careers and futures secured that no longer required parental intervention. so her mother turned her attention to her youngest child, who she'd paid little mind to the past years. her nanny had just retired to the countryside to take care of her son, and her mother took the opportunity to slip into her daughter's life.

off the bat, hye-eun was seen as inadequate in almost all of the areas she was supposed to have been training in. her embroidery was clumsy, she barely knew how to pour a cup of tea gracefully, and the only meal she could cook was a commoner food, of all things. her mother quickly sent for tutors to come "fix" her incompetent daughter, and hye-eun felt her freedom slip out from between her fingers. her only comfort in that time was sending out mi-ryeong to the marketplace to purchase more books for her, and poring over them with only light from a flickering candle. it carried on for only a few weeks before the young lady devised a plan: to become so good at the skills her mother wanted her to be good at, and then her mother would let her be. she was surely intelligent enough for simple tasks like flower arrangement, and it seemed foolproof.

and it worked, surprisingly. it was a few months of suffering and pricking her finger countless times on the stupid embroidery needle, but she finally re-acquired her freedom when her mother decided her daughter was now a "proper lady", still blissfully unaware of her disgraceful hobbies.

a new friend

her time now her own again, hye-eun somehow became even more daring than she had been. while before she'd have sent mi-ryeong out on her own, she decided that she now wanted to see things for herself. dressed up as a man, she wriggled through a dog hole in the estate's surrounding walls and gleefully ran to town, heading straight for the library she'd heard about. this became a weekly occurrence, and it was at the library that she befriended a strange young noble. he was sat there every tuesday and thursday afternoon, though he never read anything while he was there. he just painted, or slept, occasionally.

it was on their third meeting that hye-eun finally greeted him. his name was yeong deok-won, and it seemed he wasn't nearly as well-read as her, nor was he particularly interested in becoming so. he was respectful though, and offered her food when she'd spent too long at the library, so he was alright in her book.

a looming marriage

it had been about seven months since she'd started sneaking out when her mother began inviting over noble ladies for tea parties. which hye-eun would be fine with, if her mother always insisted she come along and then demand she show off how good she was at embroidering an ugly chicken. her words were almost always too reminiscent of a merchant, and it wasn't long before hye-eun caught on.

her mother wanted to marry her off.

she was, understandably, not quite agreeable with such an arrangement, and when her mother tested the waters one day, hye-eun had responded with as much resistance as she could muster. what she got back was a lacklustre "well, you've still got time. but it will happen, eventually. it's all girls like you are good for." that one statement both angered and despaired her, but it seemed there was little she could do. she had just begun to pen her own poems and reading a new analysis of confucianist values. she had so much more to do; no, she could do so much more than cook and smile for some stupid man.

and so, when her mother announced that one of those noble ladies she hadn't bothered to remember the names of had decided she'd make a fine daughter-in-law, hye-eun protested. she threw a tantrum, the first in years, crying, pleading, screaming that she didn't want to get married. she showed her poems, her studies to her mother, exclaiming that she wanted to be a scholar, and that she was smart enough for it, because she was.

and her mother responded with a slap across her cheek for her impudence. how disgraceful such a display was, for a hobby that was essentially worthless to a woman. she had mi-ryeong beaten for her neglect in stopping her young lady, had her notebooks burnt, and then sent hye-eun back to her room to reflect on her errors in solitude.

the wedding would be moved forward.

the great escape

it was early one morning, when one of the maidservants came to wake the young lady up, only to find her bed empty. the mattress was cold, and other than jewellery and a few pieces of clothing, nothing else had been taken. the young lady of the jeong house had run away without even a word of farewell, and by the time the household was alert enough to send guards to give chase, her trail was long gone.

hye-eun had slipped away in the dead of night, pawning off some of her jewellery and silks for a good amount of money to get by, before hitchhiking a carriage to seek out her nanny. perhaps she could offer some guidance and shelter. she was like a mother to her, after all. her nanny was surprised to find her former ward stood at her door a few hours before dawn, but turned her away as soon as she'd heard of her goal. whatever she'd taught her when she was young was never meant to fester into such a thing, and it'd be best if she erased such thoughts immediately. she could let her stay for a bit, but this was no place for a yangban lady like herself. "go home, hye-eun."

disappointed by her response, hye-eun had rejected her promptly and left once more. she'd braced herself for such a reaction, but she was still hoping the nanny who she respected so greatly would at least understand where she was coming from, and the reality of it was devastating. she allowed herself to shed two tears before she psyched herself up once more. well, there was always plan b.

deok-won was, interestingly, less shocked to see her, and thankfully more willing to hear her out. his only qualm with her story was only that she'd been a girl all along, to which she'd pointed out that he'd probably never bothered to take a proper look at her face. which was, yeah, true. he allowed her to reside in one of the side buildings in his large but rather... empty estate, on the condition that she'd cook for him and help him copy whatever silly texts his grandmother wanted from him every once in a while. it was a very generous deal, and she'd be a fool if she turned it down just because she didn't want to copy art of war, or whatever.

the new yeong deok-won

"so, what now?" deok-won had asked, a few weeks later.

"what do you mean?"

"you wanted to be a scholar, right? you're not getting anywhere over here." he had a point. but with her status, she wasn't sure what she could do, exactly. the palace would never let her in. if only she was a—

"lend me your name."

"what?"

it took a lot of convincing, but her friend finally caved. "you'd do much better with it than i will, i suppose." and right he was! and so, hye-eun headed to the palace, new identity and all, still evading her family who was now growing more frantic in their search for her. she shuddered to imagine what kind of punishment she might face if they caught her, but it was scarier imagining what foolish, ugly yangban boy they wanted to marry her to. she'd succeed, if only to avoid that, but it concerns her what she might do if her identity was ever found out.

it was a lot to give to chase a dream that might be nothing more than a naive fantasy, but, admittedly, fantasy had always been her favourite genre.

the original owner of hye-eun's current identity, and her closest (and only) friend. deok-won is the son of a wealthy merchant family who was recently orphaned when his father died in a carriage accident travelling back from a neighbouring county and his mother, understanding the best option she could do for her now-grown son, had committed suicide to award him with wealth from the virtuous woman award. he's inherited a vast fortune from both his family's business and his mother's sacrifice, enough for him to live comfortably for the rest of his life without much complaint. his grandmother, though, seems to want him to become an official to elevate the family to yangban status. it's why deok-won spent so many afternoons at the bookstore, just for show. his mother was quite the sharp and talented lady herself, and it seems it was her influence that allowed deok-won to understand hye-eun better. deok-won's true passion is painting, and he has accumulated quite a reputation under a pseudonym.

BACKGROUND

The daughter of one of the many king’s ministers, Sung Mi Young was a talented young lady. She was the eldest of her siblings and arranged to be married to the king not long after he had married the Queen. Her marriage or rather, her becoming a concubine was entirely political and not due to favor. Mi Young did not receive much favor from the king at all. Mi Young had a hard time adjusting to the environment of the palace and often relied on the Queen while adjusting. The two eventually became rather good friends, at least Mi Young liked to believe so.

As years passed the Queen and King had the crown, she was extremely happy for the queen and she to wished for a child of her own. She was granted her wish 6 years later after giving birth to the youngest prince, Dae-Hyun. Mi Young became extremely weak after giving birth and was in and out of consciousness for around a week and was bedridden for a month until she recovered. She never really got better and would often be bedridden for several days at a time if she used too much energy. Nevertheless, she was content with spending her time raising Dae-Hyun. When he was 4, Mi Young passed away from her declining health.

Dae-Hyun was still young, so he doesn’t remember much about her even now. The only memories he has are the ones he reads from the journals she left behind. After her passing, he was left in the first Queen’s care alongside the crown prince. He always had a knack for causing trouble, or rather the better way of putting is that he was a rather hyper kid. A curious individual that just happened to find trouble easily. He was around the age of 10 when the Queen passed away. Dae-Hyun didn't visibly mourn, instead, he internalized it. People dismissed it as him being far too young to understand death or maybe his brain did understand but he didn't react because he had already lost his mom. In reality, he wept when he was alone and slightly resented himself for being too weak to protect those close to him. This became so internalized that it became a huge fear for him, even the thought of losing someone he cares for is enough to cause him to panic to this day.

Still being far too young to be left alone in his own regards, he was left in the hands of another concubine. However, he and this concubine didn’t get along much. Mainly because he didn’t want anyone else to replace his mother or the first Queen that had raised him. He became more and more rebellious over the years, wanting little to do with the current king or politics. Once he reached his teens, he learned how to escape the palace and it quickly became his favorite thing. Dae-Hyun adapted to using the name Sung Myung-Ki when outside the palace. It was the name which his mother had wished to give him, had she not been so ill during his birth and the king naming him before she had the chance.

During his escapes, he grew closer with local Go players and began learning from them as time passed. It became his favorite hobby over poetry or swordsmanship which he practiced at the palace. Dae-Hyun knew better than to assume he was safe just because he was a prince. Not much changed as the years passed. Dae-Hyun always tried to stay off the king and officials’ radar as to not compete with his brothers over the throne. Purposely causing himself trouble here and there. He avoided the new queen and spent his time either sneaking out or spending time with his siblings. The only notable event in the present is that he saved a young woman from some men and took her into the palace under the condition she would help him escape from the palace when he wanted…..

Su-Jin was brought into this world a year after the crown prince was born. It was the third month of the year and the early signs of spring were now upon the people of Joseon. During this time the Choi family was preparing for the birth of their second child. The air was filled with nervous energy from the staff and the Lord of the house, but there was still that excitement that came whenever a child's birth neared. Even the eldest child Yeong-Hui was excited about having a sibling soon. She may have only been five years old at the time but she knew how to read the room. It wasn't like Seo-bi and Hak-ju were trying to hide the fact that they were having another child either. After the complicated birth of their first child they were worried that they might not have anymore children, so Su-Jin's birth was a big deal to them.

But not matter how much one prepares for something there will br always something to trip up the plan. Seo-bi had went into labor rather unexpectedly while she was watching Yeong-Hui play out in the court yard of the house. She had just been sitting there when she had felt the familiar pains rise to the surface. Seo-bi kept herself calm and composed, not wanting to make Yeong-Hui panic, as she let the maid know what was happening so she could take care of Yeong-Hui while she was in labor. Than the wait for the news began. Hak-ju spent hours of pacing, the memories of his first child's birth plaguing his thoughts. Yeong-Hui's birth had been rough on his wife and it had taken Seo-bi nearly a whole day in order for to bring their eldest daughter into the world. Hak-ju was scared that this time around he wouldn't have a wife when it was all over, but he stored his worries away for later when Yeong-Hui came to him asking about her mom after she snuck past the staff. Hak-ju and Yeong-Hui spent the rest of Seo-bi's labor together.

When they came to announce the successful birth of Su-Jin to Hak-ju and Yeong-Hui it was obvious that there was good news from the way they were beaming at their lord and young lady. Yeong-Hui had for a bit complained when her father told her that she couldn't meet her new sibling until tomorrow when her mother had time to rest, but she complied when Hak-ju promised that she would be one of the first to see her after everything settled. When Hak-ju was finally by his wife's side again he could tell how exhausted she was. Even if it was her second time giving birth it still was a challenge. They whispered to eachother about the little healthy girl that was now Yeong-Hui's little sister agreeing to call her Su-Jin.

In Su-Jin's younger years nothing really happened to her and her family. While yes, she did make quite the reputation for herself among the staff for being a rather rambunctious six year old who was more interested in playing with her older sister than anything else. Though Yeong-Hui's and Su-Jin's life was slightly disrupted when the news of their mother's third pregnancy came to light. This time many were hoping it would be a boy. Not that Hak-ju didn't life his daughters, but he wanted to be able have someone one around to look after the family when he no longer could. Su-Jin never felt like she was getting pushed aside for the new baby, and even if she did Yeong-Hui was always there for her. The memories of her mother's pregnancy Seong-Su are fuzzy now that she is older, having witnessed the event when she was six years old. Yeong-Hui remembers more of it more than she does.

Su-Jin does remember the first time she meet her little brother. He looked so small in her mother's arms, her father found that comment amusing. He promised her that he would one day grow up to be just has big as her and Yeong-Hui. If Su-Jin could she would have froze time in that moment. Everyone was so happy. It would seem it would be the last moment that they were happy because soon after Su-Jin could see a sort of dark cloud settle over her parents. Yeong-Hui seemed to know what was wrong with the way her face would fall when she watched their parents and the servants talk in hushed whispers. Whatever it easy they wanted to keep it from Yeong-Hui and Su-Jin. Their father wasn't around as much after Seong-Su was born and being a child Su-Jin assumed that was why her mother always looked to be worried all the time now. Su-Jin would sometimes ask Yeong-Hui what was wrong with their parents since no one else wanted to tell her. Yeong-Hui would simply smile and tell her everything was fine, and Su-Jin believed her thinking that her older sister would never lie to her.

This went on for a whole year. One slow and depressing year for the Choi family. Hak-ju distanced himself from the family after Seong-Su's first winter had come and gone. Their home wasn't as cheerful and vibrant as it used to be. Yeong-Hui was now thirteen and had taken over caring for seven u ear old Su-Jin and their almost one year old brother. Su-Jin could see that she had the same tired eyes as their parents now. Yeong-Hui wanted to help where she could though. Su-Jin never knew how much how sister actually knew about what was happening until they were much older. Su-Jin was still living the comfortable life. Her family made sure that she unaware of the threats that were made on their lives and strange men that would circle the home at night. Su-Jin did notice the increase of people at their home but she would never dwell on it for too long. Looking back she really should have been paying attention to the signs than maybe it wouldn't have as such a surprise when it all came crashing down.

It was late in the night when Yeong-Hui came crashing into Su-Jin's room without warning. "Su-Jin wake up!" She yelled before trying to calm herself when she looked into Su-Jin's panic filled eyes. Yeong-Hui gave a trembling smile as she reached to gently and firmly take her sister's hands in hers. "Sorry to scare you but mom is waiting for us and we really need to go." She spoke more hushed now, as her eyes darted towards the entrance of Su-Jin's. "But I'm tired." Su-Jin complained and Yeong-Hui just nodded her head holding Su-Jin's hands a bit tighter, like she was prepared to just yank her up and start running at any moment. "I know b-" Yeong-Hui was caught off by the sound of screaming and loud thuds that consumed the silence that was there moments before. Su-Jin didn't even get to process what was happening before Yeong-Hui was pulling her into her arms and carrying her out the room. Yeong-Hui had Su-Jin seceruly pressed against her chest, one arm under her while the other kept Su-Jin's head down to keep her from looking around them. Su-Jin can still remember how Yeong-Hui's skin smelt of iron.

When Yeong-Hui allowed Su-Jin to look up again she could see the state that she was really in with the moon revealing what the dark had hidden. There was fresh blood on her skin and clothes, which had gotten on Su-Jin when she had carried her outside. She looked like she was about to break down on the spot but was trying to hold it together just a bit longer. Su-Jin could see that they were now behind the storage house that was placed at the back of the house near the meduim-sized wall that lined their home. "Su-Jin I need you to look at me." Yeong-Hui gently forced the seven year old girl to meet her gaze. "We are going to climb over this wall, I know abeoji doesn't want us to do that, but it will be fun I promise." Yeong-Hui flicked her head over to the house as the sound of yelling seemed to grow louder. Su-Jin could only bring herself to nod her head and allow Yeong-Hui to lift her up and onto the top of wall, using a near by crate to give her a boost. Su-Jin waitem for her sister to climb up so Yeong-Hui could help her climb down to the otherside.

Once their feet hit the ground they took off running. Su-Jin wasn't sure how long they ran for but when Yeong-Hui aggressively yanked her behind her she didn't question her. "Young lady Yeong-Hui it's me Yu Do-Jin, I have come to bring you and your sister to safety." Su-Jin peaked out from behind her sister to see who is was. Yu Do-Jin was not a noble man like their father was but he was none the less and very good friend of his, seeing as though their father hadn't started out a wealthy man. He was an older gentleman with speckles of grey in his beard and he kind face as well. Yeong-Hui relaxed at the sight of the familiar man, having seen a lot of him growing up she knew to trust him. Yeong-Hui nodded her head and followed the family friend away from the place they once called home.

Do-Jin took the girls away into the night and gave them a place to stay at the home of Nam Hyeon. A widow who had lost both her husband and son at sea. She was the same age as Do-Jin, if not a bit older, but her hard eyes softened at the sight of a blood covered Yeong-Hui and a confused Su-Jin. That night Su-Jin was glued to her sister's side after she had returned from cleaning the blood offlow of her. She didn't hear about what happened until the morning after when she listened in the Hyeon and Do-Jin talking. A group of people had attacked their home before burning it to ground to destroy any evidence of them being there. Everyone had assumed that Yeong-Hui and Su-Jin had perished in the fire. To the whole Gangwon province the Choi family was no more.

That night was long and Su-Jin struggled to sleep, the fear of what will happen if let herself relax for just a moment. Those who were investigating the fire and murder had confirmed that everyone had died that night. The sisters were officially no more. Yu Do-Jin and Nam Hyeon both agreed to take the girls in and give them a safe place to call home. For a while the debated on what to do since the girls had been confirmed dead, not to mention if those who where still looking for them knew that were alive they might come for them to tie up loose ends. In the end Do-Jin and Hyeon came to the conclusion that they would have to make new identities for Su-Jin and Yeong-Hui if they were going to survive this new life of theirs. They had to come up with something that would help them blend into society.

Surprisingly it was Hyeon that suggested that they make Su-Jin's and Yeong-Hui's new identities boys. When Do-Jin asked her why she wanted to do that when all they knew was the life of being a noble girl. Hyeon explained that men had more opportunities for education than girls did, and the ones who were trying to get rid of them in the first probably wouldn't expect them to disguise themselves as boys. The first step was to create a credible story. Hyeon and Do-Jin agreed that the girls would take his name and become his sons. Do-Jin was married to a woman named Eun-Soo who luckily had some connections in places to help him turn Su-Jin and Yeong-Hui into their sons. Su-Jin and Yeong-Hui were to be the nephews of Eun-Soo that Do-Jin had agreed to take in when their parents had passed away from sickness. Once everything was set in place it was time to start the grueling process of teaching the girls to be their sons, and it was going to prove to be quite the challenge.

Since Yeong-Hui was older she had an easier time making the transition from noble class daughter to a middle class son, and while Su-Jin didn't out right refuse she sometimes had a hard time keeping the fact that she was a girl a seceret. The first couples years were rough but when Su-Jin discovered that she now had an excuse to be rough she quickly learned to enjoy pretending to be a boy. The girls learned how to read and write, which was not something that was usually taught to the girls in their family because they wouldn't be getting because of the fact that they wouldn't be getting a education like the men in their family. They also learned how to fight. Yeong-Hui wasn't as enthusiastic about this has she was about learning how to read and write but she knew it had to be done if she was going to protect herself. Fighting was something Su-Jin excelled in. She would beg for her teacher to spend more time with her after lesson wanting to hone her skills, and if wouldn't agree he to her pleading she would simply make her way onto the streets to get more lesson time. Yeong-Hui was never to happy about this.

As they grew into adulthood Yeong-Hui one day told Su-Jin that she wanted to find and punish the ones who had killed their parents all those years ago. Expect Su-Jin wasn't as set on finding out who had taken their family from them. While yes, she thought it would be nice to know it wasn't a priority to her. She may not have witnessed the same horrors as her older sister that night, and she wanted to help her. But she also felt that it would put Yeong-Hui in unnecessary danger. Yeong-Hui grinded at Su-Jin for months before finally agreeing to help. Their first step was to learn about what caused their family to be targeted in the first place. For that they went to Do-Jin due to his close friendship with their friendship. While he didn't know everything he was able to give them directions to those you might know more. It was this advice that lead Su-Jin and Yeong-Hui to the palace. While they never did learn about the arranged marriage to the Crown prince they did learn that their father was in close communication with the king. Su-Jin did most of the hard work when it came to getting the information from people but she was proud. She felt proud that she was finally doing something useful rather than living the rest of life her life has a pretend boy.

Once they knew that they could find the answer to their families death when the palace they devised a plan to get inside. Originally Yeong-Hui was going to be the one to attempt becoming the crown prince's eunuch, since she was more knowledgeable and patient than Su-Jin was. While Su-Jin was going to work on becoming a royal guard to find out information from other workers rather than the crown prince. But it would seem life would have other plans for the sisters. Su-Jin some how ended up being the one to take the eunuch test. She had debated backing out but she also couldn't risk this opportunity, so she did what any lady would do and cheat her way through the whole thing. She never thought she was going pass having only really turned on the charm to max in order to convinve them that she most definitely meant to be there. By some miracle Su-Jin ended up passing the test. Yeong-Hui was at first worried that Su-Jin wouldn't last as an eunuch since she hated not being involved in things, but when Su-Jin promised that she would be on her best behaviour Yeong-Hui felt a bit better. Now all that was left was to discover why their family was killed without being discovered.

Role: The Eunuch

Physical Appearance: Su-Jin has never really put any effort into looking more like a man. She got pretty lucky when it came to her genes, maybe not so much in life but she makes do with what she has. She is not overtly tall, being five foot six, or muscular but she has other ways to make her self seem more masculine to those around her. She keeps her long, almost black, hair up in styles that are more traditional for men to wear. While she doesn't always enjoy how tight she has make it in order to keep everything in place, she does like that is says out of her eyes. Which is big thing for her whenever she has to fight. Speaking of fighting, her build is very deceiving to those who are trying to challenge her. She has more of neutral body shape with most of her feminine features being in her slim waist and face, so it can be hard to tell that she fairly fit. She has lean muscle that show off the amount of time she has devoted to honing her skills. So while she can't outwardly show off that she isn't weak she can demonstrate through winning.

The clothes that she wear help her further conceal any evidence of the fact that she is a woman. Su-Jin thanks the gods everyday that she doesn't have much of have to bind anything like her sister does. Though she does struggle a lot when it comes to her face. She has very soft features which she can't really do anything about. She will sometimes use a bit of makeup to make herself look less gentle. The only thing about her face that she feels like isn't openly "girly" Are her eyes. They are a deep brown color that look black in some lightenings. She will use to her advantage, hardening her look to intimidate people. Which usually works after she has displayed that she isn't a force to be trifled with. At time point it has been so long since has dressed like a woman that she doesn't really miss it. Plus since she is pretending she doesn't have to hide any of her scars, and she has a lot of them. Most are on her arms and legs from her fights but she has some on her shoulders as well. The most significant one she has is the one from a knife that had gotten dangerously close to slitting her throat. But that is a story for later.

Personality: Even has an adult Su-Jin is someone who does what they feel is right and doesn't really care what anyone else thinks. She has found that being a boy has given her more opportunities more than being a noble woman ever could. This view of hers has been the reason her and Yeong-Hui would get into fights. Since Yeong-Hui was already into her teenage years when everything happened with their parents she hangs onto it more than Su-Jin does. Not to mention Yeong-Hui was a witness to some of the horrors. Su-Jin does miss her family, but she was also seven at the time everything was taken from them so this life is all she has ever known. She doesn't really care that they went from being nobles to being middle class boys that sometimes struggle to make ends meet. But she understands that it's not just her view that matters. She may not feel the level of pain as Yeong-Hui does, but she is still her family not matter how much they fight. And family is always there for eachother. Su-Jin also feels like she owes Yeong-Hui because she risked her life to get her to safety.

If you couldn't tell already. Su-Jin is very loyal. Though to her family comes first, and she will prove this time and time again without hesitation. Now this doesn't mean she tosses her friends to the wind has soon as her family needs her. She makes time for them to. She knows that it is important to not only promote good relationships with family, but also with people outside of your family. She thinks it is important to have a support system outside of your family. She likes having that outside opinion that will openly tell her that she is doing something wrong, but will also support her whenever she needs it. While she doesn't have many friends, this is because she doesn't trust people easily. She is fiercely protective over them. That is greatest fear. She can't risk losing everything again. Su-Jin has made peace with her current situation but that fear of losing the family she made terrifies her to no ends. She will fight tooth and nail to keep the little happiness she has in her life. Whether this fight is through brute strength or wit she will do it.

Su-Jin is very stubborn. Her father, Do-Jin, would often compare her to a mule because of how stubborn she is. This can either be a really good thing for her or it can be something that is extremely frustrating for everyone else around her. Once Su-Jin has set her mind to something she will achieve this goal. She doesn't really care how long it takes her to get there but she will get there. Plus she enjoys the journey that comes with completing ones goals. Since she has been able to look into the life of a woman while pretending to be a man she has witnessed that amount of freedom she has to be the way she is. She doesn't want to squander this chance that she has to really become something. Though she has put this on hold at the moment to help Yeong-Hui find their biological parents killers. This where the bad part of her stubbornness comes into play. It took Yeong-Hui forever to convince Su-Jin to help her, because she was essentially trying to reason with a brick wall. While she wants to help she also doesn't want to out her in danger which is why it took so long for her to agree to helping.

On top of becoming a brick wall when she gets really stubborn, she can also be a bit petty. She isn't a complainer, more of the type to bottle everything until it explodes. Which why she is petty. She would much rather demonstrate that she is upset through silent treatment and short sentence than communicate that she is upset. She doesn't like how petty she can get, and wishes that she could be better at communicating with people. But she someone reason whenever she goes to admit how feels about something she just clams up and says something else. Su-Jin is likes this because she doesn't want to be a nuisance to anyone. Everyone around her has sacrificed so much and see so many horrors that she feels like it she expresses that she is upset about something that she will seem ungrateful or look like a brat. She was already left out of things once and she doesn't want that to happen again. So she has instead taught hersefl to be okay even when she doesn't feel okay just so people won't worry about her or shut her out for seeming dramatic.

This bottling up method of hers has proven not to work very well long term. If she doesn't at least try and let things out in small increments she can sometimes just blow up on people. Dumping everything on them at once in an attmept to get it all out of her system. Sometimes she says things that don't really make sense and sometimes the words can be very harsh. These rants of her don't usually last very long, but she always has this feeling of dread and anxiety in her afterwards. She will try to apologize a million times to cover it up and pretend that it never happened. And she is geuinely sorry for blowing up on people. This is part of the reasons he is trying to work on her communication skills. She doesn't want to have those blow up moments like she is a little kid. Su-Jin already doesn't think very highly of herself so she thinks that this is the least she can do to make it easier for people to live with her.

Su-Jin truly believes that her worth on really lies in the fact that she is really street-smart and can use a sword. She doesn't think she can compare to her sister who is still very driven despite all of the things she has gone through. She kind of lets Yeong-Hui drag her around and tell her what to do to help her ease the pain of the past. While this make it seem like she can't function without her sister. Su-Jin and Yeong-Hui lead very different lives. Su-Jin spends a lot of her time out on the streets and has learned how to navigate that world well. She has learned how to take both physical and verbal punches. She knows how to talk to people when she needs something. It was also the place that showed her just how cruel the world could be to people. She has seen what could have happened to her and Yeong-Hui if they had been left to their own devices. This has taught her to be kind and sympathetic towards people. Su-Jin also feels like she knows more about life in general because of the kind of life she chooses to lead. So will she may not value herself she at least values life.

Skills: Su-Jin is really good at swordsmanship, archery, and fist fighting. While her archery still needs some work to be considered a mastery level but she is really proud with how far along she has come along since she is self taught. Su-Jin is also quite the smooth talker, while she doesn't have the same book-smarts as her sister she has very good street-smarts and can convince anyone she knows something even though she doesn't.

Fears: That she is going to lose her sister and the family they made. Su-Jin could go her whole never knowing the story about why her parents were killed and she would be fine with never getting be a noble, because to her only her sister and adoptive parents matter to her now. While she does mourn the loss of her parents and young brother, but she had made peace with their loss and made a new family.

Her hair, when not in a top knot, is lower back length, silky, and straight. She occasionally tries to make the appearance of hair seem coarse to give her a more masculine look. She does not own any hair jewelry, despite her liking for it, to avoid being caught and as such, only either wears her hair in a topknot or lets it down.

Young-Mi is an intelligent, lively, and quick-on-her feet eunuch who desires nothing more than to find the reason behind her family's murder, and hopefully the murderers as well. Due to her past, she appears to be wise beyond on her years, despite having a childish demeanor at times when it pertains to sweets. She is blunt and not afraid to say what she believes is wrong or right, regardless of if it may cost her her head or not. She believes that bluntness and honesty is a good trait for the crown prince's eunuch to have, less he guides the future emperor down the wrong path. Disguised as a boy for all her life, she has the natural tendency to act like a man. On occasion however, the desire to be her true self oozes out, forcing her to act in ways that may not be befitting of a man, even if this man has had his supposed family jewels cut off. While her strength doesn't exactly lie in book smarts, she is equipped with street smarts, hence allowing her to beat the system and cheating her way into becoming the crown prince's eunuch. The only person that she is able to smile with her eyes to is her older sister, who is now sick and bedridden, but under the care of a trusted neighbor so long as Young-Mi is able to provide for her sister's care. Young-Mi is an extremely loving and caring girl at heart, even if her coarse demenor at times does nothing to show for it. While she is cannot use a sword or any weapon for that matter for the life of her, she finds that her wits, intelligence, and way with words works just as well to get her out of dangerous situations.

Young-Mi adores the little treasures that her late mother and father left her, even if they were measly little trinkets in anyone else's eyes. While unfortunately being unable to wear it, Young-Mi always keeps on hand a sakura blossom hair pin that her late mother had given to her just before she had passed. Her mother had a good reason for suddenly gifting her something so feminine, but she never was able to hear the reason why before the murder. Her father on the other hand, had given her his most treasured jade pendant, one that was passed down to him from his own father. She keeps this on her person at all times, never ever parting with the gifts no matter the cost. She enjoys writing letters to her ill older sister, and in each letter always emphasizes how she misses her so and wishes she could come home. Also on her person, she keeps the first handkerchief her sister ever made for her when they were young children. While the piece of cloth is now old and worn and the design is haphazardly sewn in, she can't help but truly smile every time she imagines her sister's fingertips scratched and bandaged all for the sake of gifting this hankerchief to her. She enjoys taking long, slow walks in nature, for it helps her stay true to herself when she begins to lose herself to her mind or to her goal. Her eyes seem to light up whenever she gets a whiff of something sweet, much like a dog sniffing a bone. The more prettily the treats are made, the more she can't contain herself. She enjoys painting, albeit the paintings are never that good in other people's eyes, but she enjoys showing them off regardless. While she can't wear them, she loves beautiful hanboks, jewelry, and hair accessories. Because of that, she enjoys buying beautiful things to give to her older sister.

Young-Mi has a deep seated dislike for the nobility, for she believes that the nobility and perhaps the royal family, had something to do with her family's murders. Thus, she dislikes being anywhere near one due to their seemingly innate arrogance and lack of regard for the poor and helpless. The appearance of knives, or anything sharp for that matter, triggers her memories of the past and leaves her unable to move or breathe for a few moments at a time. She dislikes sour foods, and dislikes letting people know about her abnormal love of sweets less they suspect her of being a woman due to her tastes. While she never cared for the royal family before her family's murders, preferring to keep to her happy life rather than getting involved in marriage and politics, she misses the late queen and finds herself suspicious of the new, young queen that the king seems to adore. At a young age, she remembers meeting the late queen while disguised as a young boy. The way she smiled was warm, enveloping and the way she spoke made Young-Mi want to listen to the woman talk over and over. She cared for the commoners, a trait that she wondered if the current queen had. Young-Mi also despises the horrors that occur within the lives of the nobility--lies, deceit, and death. Those are the three words that she finds defines the nobility.

hobbies & talents

Young-Mi enjoys writing letters to her sister, writing letters to her late mother and father even if she will never be able to send them. She practices her penmanship on the daily, believing it to be necessary as the crown prince's eunuch while also enjoying seeing her own writing skills improve, much like her father always was proud of her for. Even if people may never see her paintings, she enjoys painting them in the little free time she has, her paintings often of various sorts of flora and fauna she researches on the occasion as she takes her long walks in nature. In the past, she enjoyed putting make-up on her older sister, knowing fully well that she could never wear them herself. Interestingly enough, her talent lies not in her artwork nor her penmanship, but her make-up skills. Covering up any physical scars she may have is no problem unless water is involved. Her sister has always praised her for it, for being able to make her sister's sickly, ghost-like skin looking pearly and healthy. Now as a eunuch, she is unable to put make-up upon her sister anymore and therefore enjoys painting artworks of beautiful women as if she were applying make-up on them. One thing that she finds herself privileged about is the fact that she is able to study and get an education as women are often not able to and uses this to her advantage by learning and studying as much as she can on the daily.

Young-Mi has the tendency to be stubborn, so much so that she isn't afraid of standing up to a high ranking noble, the crown prince, or even the emperor himself. An emperor cannot rule a country without the opinions of his people, after all. She feels as if she must speak on behalf of the poor and helpless for they can't themselves. When she finds any sort of information that may lead her to the reason behind her family's murders, she often cannot control herself, always running full force and unrelenting, emotions running rampage as she milks the little information she could find. She is afraid that one day, she'll want to commit the same harms to her murderers that her murderers committed upon her parents if she were to ever find them, once dead eyes filled with rage and malice. She no longer has the ability to produce tears, negative emotions often ending in her giving of a stoic and cold demeanor rather than any tears. Her stubborn personality often clashes with others, leading her into particularly dangerous situations that she must use her wits to get out of.

"My lord, it is healthy girl!," exclaimed the manservant as he bursts unannounced through the lord's doors, brows wet with sweat and chest heaving with heavy breaths. The lord sat up abruptly from his desk, chair tilting back and falling to the floor with a thump at the sudden movement. His eyes gleamed with joy as he swept past the manservant, walking briskly towards his wife's chambers as his heart thumped loudly in his broad chest.

Her chamber doors opened with a clack as her husband scrambled through past the mid-wives. She laughed as she noticed him holding a quill and a scroll respectively in each hand, evidence of him rushing here to her side to see their newborn daughter. She looked pale and weak, chapped lips curling into a sweet, motherly smile as her daughter gleamed up at her and took her finger in her tiny, tiny hand and cooed. Looking up at her loving husband, the lady of the house beckoned him over with an enthusiastic hand, "Come, my lord. Come see our daughter."

The midwives stood in loving, tearful silence as the lord of the house crept slowly to the side of the bed, almost as if he was worried he might disturb the young baby with his mere steps. He knelt down to the ground, wet eyes staring cheerfully at his wife before glancing down as his youngest daughter as his wife handed him their daughter.

"What shall we name her, my dear?," he whispered sweetly, lips pressing lightly to his wife's forehead. After pondering for a moment and after helping herself to the scene of her husband cooing at their young daughter, she knew what her name would be.

"Young-Mi," she sang out an almost saintly voice, "It means eternal and beautiful, just like our daughter is." Her husband nodded, both their eyes shining brightly with love and affection as they mentality prepared for the many, many years they'll have to raise their youngest daughter.

At some point in time, their daughter became known as their son named Park Ye-Jun. The midwives, maids, and manservants who were their for the bird were told to keep it hush for a reason they did not know, but they did so anyway for their lord and lady treat them as kindly as can be. Young-Mi's childhood was different from most children, for she was taught that she was a girl and must learn how to be a proper girl, but must act and dress as a boy, especially in public. In the home, she may be as true to herself as she wanted while in the privacy of her family home, away from most servants other than a trusted few. While she found herself different from the other children and from her sister mostly, who did not have to be a boy in public, she did not question it because her parents loved both her and her sister all the same. Their household was full of happiness, or so her parents tried to do for her. As a young child, she just didn't realize the horrors that her parents had to deal with behind the scenes.

The Day Her Tears Dried

Tears stained their cheeks, making their eyes glassy as they whispered meaningless words of "I love you's" to their two beautiful daughters, who were distraught--screaming, crying, hyperventilating, stained dark red with blood. Their minds went haywire as they laid on the floor, their hearts slowing, breathing too calm and skin paling as their lives were slowly, gently, drained from their bodies like the crimson red blood which was pooling around them. Accepting their fates, the lady of the house took the last of her strength and handed her youngest daughter her birthday gift as the lord of the house weakly handed her his gift--a sakura blossom hairpin and a jade pendant. As their father tried to produce a smile to reassure them, she tried desperately to speak, but she was already drowning in her own blood, her lungs filled to the brim. Young-Mi gasped and heaved and cried and screamed to the heavens above to keep her mother alive, praying to every unknown diety their was to save her, but to no avail. Her husband knew what was happening. She was dying and so was he. He couldn't move, his body growing cold as he was also drained of blood, but he willed all the strength in the world to take her hand tightly into this his, wishing to all that was holy that if he were to die, he would want to die with her.

Young-Mi's throat grew hoarse from the cries, her older sister following suit, crying as if this would be the last time they would ever cry.

Blood gurgled within her mother's throat as she tried to produce words, any word, but all she could was cough as her husband stared at their girls and held her hand as tightly as he could, waiting for death to take him.

And then, with no mercy or kindness, death's single and find touch turned her parents' minds into a damp, cold cave of morbid nothingness; the odious faceless shadow taking the loves of her lives away from her. Young-Mi gripped at the hairpin as if it were her lifeline, her body curled up on the ruined flooring of their living area as she produced tears for the last time. Her heart ached, her body ached, her mind ached--she wanted to go with them. She begged death to take her too, but it was only her sister that was able to stop her for she couldn't lose Young-Mi too.

The Crown Prince's Eunuch

Delicate, shaking hands nervously reached up to fix a tightly pulled topknot as a thin throat swallowed air loudly, the sound loud enough that the other eunuchs around looked around curiously at who would dare to eat just before the examination.

Young-Mi was always confident, always. Until the day she found herself standing outside the emperor's palace, dressed as a eunuch and scared someone would see her as a woman and behead her then and there, about to take an exam that she definitely did not have enough knowledge for, faced with severe consquences if she were to be found cheating--which she full intends to do. The unsuspecting eunuchs surrounding her found themselves intrigues and suspicious of Young-Mi. Not because they recognized her, but because she simply would not stop touching her hair and tapping her foot, the incessant sound annoying even the proctors themselves as they glared at her nervous figure.

"Take your seats, future eunuchs of the crown prince!," one of the proctors bellowed loudly, loud enough to make Young-Mi flinch and stop in her tracks. She walked timidly towards an empty seat, stared at the cushion where she would kneel and the piece of paper in which she would write her answer on, and prayed that heaven would save her today.

virtues: brave, strong, independent, proud, determined, and justice-oriented
vices: reckless, impetuous, intimidating, restless, loud, and unladylike
personality: Soomin is a very rough around the edges girl. Acting a lot like a male rather than her fellow females. She is strong and hates being weak, having a strong pride to back that up. She loves fighting and being outdoors in the mud, and hates dresses and makeup. Even still there are times she wishes she could be pretty like other girls, her broad shoulders and muscular limbs making her self-conscious in anything feminine. Even still with her despise with the impracticality of most feminine outfits, she can not deny that some are very beautiful. She doesn't care that she is a girl and hates when anyone else does as well, her biggest insecurity being words such as unladylike.
likes: fighting, outdoors, adrenaline, weapons, sore muscles/sweat, alcohol and meat
dislikes: having her hair down, sitting still, being judged because she is female, tea, and the colour pink

appearance: Soomin is fairly tall for a female, standing roughly at 5'8 with a wide muscular build from many years of fighting. Her hair is always up in a tight hairstyle, keeping her hair out of her face at all times. Her hair is wavy strands of brown that fall not far past her shoulders. Her eyes are a pricing dark brown against her lightly tanned skin. Her nails are short and unkempt and she hardly ever wears any makeup, getting away with as little as possible. Her outfits are usually masculine and if she is forced to wear a dress it is usually highlighted with armour or fairly plain and practical.

biography: Soomin was born to the general as his daughter. During her birth, however, her mother died, resulting in the end of her father's linage. Her father despised her, if she had been a boy it wouldn't have been a problem, but because she was a girl his family's general status that had been going on for many generations was doomed to end. Soomin desperate to reach what her father wanted studied countless hours to become a general. She spent her childhood fighting, raising herself and hardly ever seeing her father. As she got older she became one of the best fighters in the kingdom, though is not given the title due to her being a girl. Despite the hate given to her by both genders for her choices, she is still determined to become a general and surpass her father. He, however, refuses to battle her, instead of arranging a marriage for her to distract her from her mission and stop her from acting like a man. Even still she refuses to give up and will best her father.

I have placed both possibilities (what if's in the rp) and how the character can overlap with mine.

AlluringRose ! I am a bit sad that I didn't make the cut, but I still very am excited to see how their relationship grows. This doesn't mean I am going to give up on this thread. I enjoy the story and was originally planning on applying for the second prince anyway, but I decided not to because I saw someone else has been interested. So it would appear that I will be picking up where I left off with that one. If it is alright with you

Sign I would like to keep Su-Jin available, I will replace her application with a prince application, but I really like her and want to keep her as a possible side character. Absolutely fine with me! Please feel free to keep her as you wish. I have no desire to ever kicking any of the characters off if you roleplayers would like to keep them. Anyone can feel free to create side characters to help advance the story forward as needed! It was a very hard decision and was a great one also (as I mentioned, it took me more than the deadline and another person to deal this with me xD)

I can only imagine how hard it was. I am glad you are letting me keep her, and I only really plan on bringing her in when it is needed. Otherwise she will be stored away until further notice. Until then I hope to make a second prince that is manages to catch your attention just as much as Su-Jin did.

Speaking of the second prince, I was wondering if you had any specific about him I need to know or can I just take the wheel and make him what I want.

So as mentioned before, the Princes (all of them) are brothers, but they can have different mothers (or if you'd like, make him blood-related with the Crown Prince). The Prince can take either their mother's last name or the King's (Lim) and we can always blame the King for their dark, sad past if needed XD

Ooh, okay. I don't want to go too over board on the angst by making him a child of a concubine or something, so I just might end up making him the son of the previous queen but he was over looked for the most part because he wasn't the oldest child.

That would be perfectly fine I think. That often happens with royalty, where the younger children are overlooked due to not being the heirs.

Although my back story isn't completed because my internet went out and I just got it back today, my character is the son of one of the concubines and Sign was okay with it when I brought up the idea via discord.
