Affiliation: United States Marine Corps
Rank: Gunnery Sergeant
Awards: Medal of Honor, China Relief Expedition Medal, Philippine Campaign Medal, Marine Corp Expeditionary Medal, Mexican Service Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal with 1 star , and a Distinguished Service Cross.
Bio:
Daniel Joseph Daly was born November 11, 1873 in New York City. Well built as a young man, he quickly established a reputation as an amatuer boxer, winning almost every match he fought. After high school, he would spend most of his young life working as a bank guard, but his fighting instinct would get him in trouble more often than not. Hoping to participate in the Spanish–American War, he enlisted in the Marine Corps on January 10, 1899, and received his initial training at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The war ended before he finished training. He soon found himself onboard ships headed for China, and in In 1900, during the Boxer Rebellion, he received his first Medal of Honor for single-handedly defending his position against repeated attacks and inflicted casualties of around 200 on the attacking Boxers. His reputation only grew after this, and Major General Butler described Daly as "The fightin'est Marine I ever knew!". He was supposed to be deployed to Haiti, but the United States declared war before he had his shot. He was on the first ships headed for Europe, and has been fighting in the trenches for months, earning a Distinguished Service Cross already for his actions. His fighting is so ferocious that it is rumored that a British officer once remarked that he fought like a "devil dog." Whether this is true or not, the nickname stuck.
