Today marks the Grand Opening of Starlite Enterprises' Ecostation Earth. The project seems unbecoming of a space travel company: it's a colossal biodome enclosing a self-sustaining ecosystem, with multiple biomes populated by animals and plants from around the world. And it’s in the middle of Downtown Bay City.

Since the beginning of the habitat's construction, rumors ran rampant from the workers to the rest of the city regarding the creatures within. Doors are found open, supplies vanish, patterns appear and animals wander from their instincts in a way that is disturbingly familiar. The environment was built to mimic nature to the best of man's abilities with a sprinkling of toys and feedings to keep the animals fat and happy. Nonetheless, these supposedly primitive beings, entrapped for entertainment, forced everyone to wonder who they were really fooling.

In the end, you can take the animal out of the wild, but you can't take the wild out of the animal.
Why a Dome?

After years of toil and dead ends in the quest for Mars mission funding, this impressive feat of engineering is actually Starlite's big break. Presently, it is beyond a doubt that humanity has the capability- economically, technologically, and politically- to colonize Mars. Recent advances in space technology and the discovery of plentiful ore deposits on our neighbor planet caught on to the media like wildfire, and soon enough, everyone on TV was talking about funding and plans and border disputes and tax havens. But it was just that… just talk. Nobody wanted to address the big red dusty elephant in the room.

Living on Mars would suck.

It’s cold. It’s dusty. There’s nothing to see but rocks. There’s also no oxygen, so if you want to enjoy the fresh breeze on your face you’re going home in a biohazard crate. Enthusiasm dimmed and Starlite wasn’t having it- they weren’t about to waste the billions of dollars they had spent on research and development. Somehow, they had to prove that living on Mars didn’t have to be terrible- in fact it could be just like home! What if there were a way to bring not only humans from Earth, but the entire environment they evolved in? What-ifs wouldn’t cut it anymore- volunteers were starting to get cold feet, potential sponsors were quietly leaving with their funding. Starlite needed to prove that they could build an artificial biosphere, complete with plants and animals, from scratch, in the most inhospitable of places. One where the air was unbreathable and any cargo shipment would go through hell reaching. And one that was where all the money was. They were through with trying to explain the science to big-city politicians and billionaires who had never opened a biology textbook. Instead, they dropped it right on their laps.
The Setting
Birklin Island is located in the heart of Bay City, a North American metropolis built around a swampy estuary and surrounded by forest. The island used to be a major center for shipping and industry until it was leveled by a massive sinkhole. As if that weren't enough, it released a cloud of noxious gases which sterilized the soil and lingers to this day, making the area uninhabitable. To anyone else, the land was effectively useless. But to Starlite, it was the perfect place to build their first out of many Ecostations. The dome itself is truly massive, covering nearly 400 hermetically sealed acres of land that is loosely divided into unique climate-controlled areas. Areas for activites and amenities are connected by partially hidden walkways. Visitors can take a safari through a hot savannah, ski on the snowy slopes of an artificial mountain and scuba dive with sharks in a coral reef, all on the same day without ever leaving the city. The only problem is traffic is a nightmare: the best ways to enter an exit the island are two bridges half-covered in a quarantine tube, and an underground tunnel for cars and subways.

Ecostation Earth is a hot topic in the press, aside from sparking renewed interest in space colonization it is drawing tourists from across the country, putting Bay city in international headlines and sending Starlite's stocks through the roof. The city officials look favorably upon the project as a source of income and political captial and have resorted to practically throwing money at the company, but this is far from true for everyone. Nobody will miss the unearthly wasteland of Birklin Island- but environmental activists are still livid at the scale at which this secretive corporation is tampering with nature's code, and a worryingly large population of city dwellers is in hysterics about the supposed toxic crater full of of unstoppable monsters. Their protests and the increasing threat of terrorism that comes with all tourist traps has forced the city to deploy the National Guard to the surrounding districts.

The RP
Welcome to Gone Wild! You, the animals of Ecostation Earth, are beginning to become restless in their artificial environment. These aren’t just any animals, however. They have all been genetically modified for life here and hopefully, in space. They live longer, have more efficient bodies, and can survive in any climate within the dome. Most importantly, unknown to their creators is a flaw in their genomes that caused them to become superintelligent. Overall, the animals' goal is to work together and rise up against their human captors to escape the biodome and soon after, the city so they can run free in the wilderness. With draconian security and unexpected incidents that will happen along the way, the escape is going to be far from easy. Once they get out into the city, they are going to be dealing with an environment that evolution never prepared them for. Just like humans, they might also end up being their own worst enemies.

Everyone stars out as quite primitive, but over time your characters will gain new skills such as manipulating technology and understanding human language.

Character guidelines
  1. Each player controls one species. You can be an individual creature or an entire pack, herd, swarm, family unit, etc. It's not necessary to create more than 7 unique individuals, the rest of the group will be considered generic.
  2. All animals have human level intelligence. The way the intelligence manifests in different animals and how long it takes depends partly on their natural behaviors, but some randomness. For simplicity's sake, animals can generally understand each other's vocalizations (a sort of universal language) but will have a harder time understanding humans.
  3. Existing terrestrial animals of any kind are acceptable, as long as they are visible to the naked eye. They may have very subtle modifications to allow them to live in the Habitat. You are encouraged to play a real species :)
  4. Marine Animals should be able to survive in air for reasonable periods of time so they can interact regularly with land animals.
  5. Extinct animals are acceptable if they have gone extinct during the Pleistocene or sooner. Reconstructions of earlier species will be considered hybrids.
  6. Hybrid Animals can be created from two animals from the same taxonomical family, advanced genetic sequencing allows them to be fully fertile. Hybrids of more than 2 species, with radically different parents, or with specific spliced genes might be allowed but I will take these on a case by case basis.
  7. Human characters will have major roles in the story (of your choice, there are no slots) and must start out as affiliated with Starlite, another human faction or as regular visitors to the biodome, but may turn their allegiance to the animals if you want. If you choose to play a human you'll play a large part in invoking story events.
  8. Domesticated animals may start out as loyal or rebellious and must be associated with a human character or NPC. Domestic animals get more specific genetic augmentations as well as prosthetics and simple implants.
  9. Anthropomorphic animals/Furries: Don’t. No exceptions. Animals can only walk on two legs and talk if their biology allows it.
Rules/Requirements
  1. Participation in the Discord is suggested if not necessary, that's where all OOC discussion will happen.
  2. Posts should be at least two paragraphs in length. If you have short, one-line replies, communicate with the person you are interacting with to put all this stuff in one post.
  3. Animals can attack others if it makes sense, but please, let the prey animals play something other than lunch. Being overly weird/violent in character or excessively creating annoying situations might get you kicked out. This goes for OOC too.
  4. Have some knowledge of your chosen animal's behavior and traits. While the RP as a whole is not exactly realistic, there are limits to how far everyone is willing to suspend their disbelief.
  5. If you want to join, you have to be committed to posting. It would be a real shame if one person got everyone stuck, or if half the players dropped out after their first post. You should at least be posting weekly- of course, if there are extenuating circumstances popping up in which you can't post, we can make arrangements.
  6. If photographs exist of your animal you must use a photo as a "faceclaim". Everything else, including humans, use whatever unless it's super cartoony.
  7. You may invoke NPCs in a post, such as handlers and symbionts. However, don't rely on them to interact with other characters.
  8. If you want to be a handler/service animal/symbiont to another player, this is welcome but be sure to consult with them first. While many of the animals and staff "know" eachother, don't just assume in-depth relationships at all unless you've gone over it OOC.
