INTRO

The tranquil town of Mayfield, Pennsylvania sees little happenings in its few suburban streets. The residents get along, catastrophes both major and minor seldom take place... It's the 1950s; everyone is still pleasantly disillusioned by the façade of the American Dream. Left and right, picture-perfect families, newlywed couples, and contented bachelors can be observed strolling and skipping on the streets without a care in the world. Life is good. Why would anyone want to leave? Most never did. Then again, they don't recall ever arriving...

As a handful of Mayfield's residents are about to find out, they're the only ones there. The entire town has actually been constructed in a virtual reality program so immersive, everyone seems to have forgotten their old selves and the outside world in place of their new, pre-selected identities. Shop clerks, your kid's babysitter, and the neighbor boy next door are all procedurally generated AI fabricated alongside this quiet little borough. Ones and zeroes form the building blocks of just about everything within.

What appears on one side of a window may not be what lies behind its walls. Time begins to loop and as files spontaneously corrupt, so do their surroundings. Those monitoring the program both inside and outside of it have begun to sweat bullets wondering just what is hindering the program and what it could mean for those trapped inside. To the unsuspecting residents of Mayfield, it all seems to point to aliens, government conspiracies, mass hysteria... far easier pills to swallow than the alternative. The truth.

BUT WHY?

As it seems, true identities are fleeting. The painful truth is that most every willing (or unwilling) participant of this virtual reality program is a prisoner selected for a study aimed toward an experimental method at criminal rehabilitation. In upholding a virtuous life as an upstanding citizen, then perhaps impulses to lie, cheat, steal, and harm can be quelled beneath a reformed persona created through an alternate personality and memories.

Who is really human? Who's working with the program's administrators? What dirty, shameful, horrid things lie in the past of each criminal resident? All will be revealed to any who may remember the truth and exit the program before the daily reset.

- Be cool. You can be a loser but if you're rude then you gotta go. Drama is for in the rp, not outside!!!!!

- We're expecting at least a couple good-sized paragraphs per post. Be literate please

- Do not godmod without explicit permission

- Discord will be required for OOC discussion

- Code is encouraged (cuz it's pretty) but not required, as is the $500 entry fee

- Oh, and follow RPN rules!!! Mature themes are more than welcome, just handle them respectfully and label triggers as appropriate

This roleplay takes inspiration from a multitude of different sources, namely that of Russian Doll, the Fallout franchise, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and probably WandaVision if I'd actually watched it. The story may go in any sort of direction, so don't be shy in suggesting plot points or bits regarding the world :-] collaboration is c00l asf
