14th February 2000, Yang Yung-guk, 21, met the love of his life while waiting for his coffee order by the dojo he worked at in Busan, South Korea. She walked by without a care in the world and with no intentions in talking to anyone but her boyfriend. He returned every day to find the same woman with the same man. The months went by and he noticed that the boyfriend and girlfriend would argue more. Eventually, the girlfriend began to come alone and Yung-guk finally saw his chance to introduce himself.

Her name was Lee Yumi, 20, and she began to open up to Yung-guk about her troubles over the course of the months. They would meet the same time, same place and order the same drinks. She would tell him about her jerk boyfriend and how she wanted to get away from him. One day she came to their catch up with a black eye but insisted that everything was fine. Yung-guk followed her home that day and saw that things were not okay. Her boyfriend was physically abusing her after spending the day drinking. Yumi was on the floor, trying to protect herself from further harm as her boyfriend kicked and hit her. This was when Yung-guk sprung into action and became the hero of the night by using his black belt skills.

Yung-guk invited Yumi to stay with him until she got herself a new place to stay. However, during her time at Yung-guk’s house, she found herself slowly falling for him. They began a romantic relationship together, but stress levels were high when Yumi began to suspect that her ex-boyfriend was stalking her. In fear that her boyfriend would find her again, Yumi decided that she would fly to Australia to be with her older sister. Even though they weren’t officially dating, Yung-guk insisted that he should come with her. He wanted to protect and love her. She would’ve said no, but soon after deciding that she wanted to move, she discovered that she was pregnant with Yung-guk’s child.

Within the month, in March 2001, Yung-guk and Yumi moved to Sydney, New South Wales in Australia. They moved in with Yumi’s sister, Mina, and her husband and children. From arrival until the birth of their child, the pair of them worked hard through casual positions to ensure they would have some money upon the birth of their child. They were able to get a rental and moved in weeks before Yumi’s due date. Thankfully they had moved when they did because their baby came at 36 weeks.

On the 1st of September 2001, at 3:43 am, Kai Yang was born at Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney.

Kai spent five weeks in NICU before being released. His childhood was what you would say was a completely normal, loving experience. After multiple doctors appointments, it was found that he had no major health defects. Yung-guk proposed to Yumi in 2004, three years after Kai was born. They were married when Kai was five where their young son was their ring boy for the wedding. When Kai was seven, his parents announced that they were expecting another child. Despite the seven-year age gap, Kai felt blessed to finally have a baby sister to play with. Jessica, however, was born at 34 weeks and their family spent many days and nights back in the NICU. Because of her premature birth, Jessica was diagnosed with heart murmurs.

To try and keep his family healthy and strong, Yung-guk emphasized the importance of health, inner health (spirituality) and fitness in the family. Both of the siblings trained in his dojo and helped their Appa where needed. On Sundays, they would attend the church their Umma worked at to help with their ‘spiritual guidance’ as Yumi liked to call it. The Yang family are a tight knitted family, full of love.

Life was pleasant for the Moon family. There were no traumas growing up and they had two very healthy children. Woon-sung and Jaehyoun had a great family with their son, Kwangsoo studying Economics and their daughter, Ji-hyo married with a baby on the way.

Kwangsoo started working for Chonghaejin Marine Company part-time as a cafeteria assistant to earn some extra money while he studied in 2014. He was on his fourth shift when the ferry the company owned, Sewol Ferry, tilted to it’s side and began to sink. With the guidance of his superior crewmates, Kwangsoo jumped into action and helped to save numerous students and passengers from near death by offering them life jackets and helping them to climb their way up to the deck. While helping the last student in his area, the pair of them became submerged under water. The young girl’s grasp slipped from his and as they were swept away in the water, all he could see was her panicking face, attempting to reach out to him.

The next thing he could remember was waking up in a hospital room, surrounded by his family and doctors. He managed to survive the sinking of the Sewol Ferry but was kept in hospital after suffering from hypothermia, a severe shattered shoulder blade and water on the lungs. Over the course of the next few weeks, he had doctors, nurses, policemen, representatives from the government – you name it, everyone! – coming in to congratulate and thank him for helping to save so many lives. The media spoke about how everyone survived, and he was overjoyed – until he found out it was a complete lie and only one-third of the passengers had managed to get out safely. That over 200 people had died. Ji-young, Gee-wong and Hyun-seon (his crewmates who helped him) were all a part of the list of those who had drowned. His parents tried to remind him that if he didn’t go back and ensure that people were safe, the death toll would’ve been higher. But all he could think about were those students who said that they were listening to their teachers. Those students he had told to stay put and to listen to the announcements. Those students who didn’t have the strength to climb and fight off the waters. And that one girl who clung onto his arm so tightly only to be washed away.

She haunted his dreams.

It had been over two weeks since that fateful day and Kwang-soo remained in hospital, recovering from his shoulder surgery. The pain was horrible, but the emotional scarring had been worse. His parents had attempted to keep him company, but he spent his time staring at the television, watching the media coverage of the ferry. It had been over a week since he had last spoken to anyone. He didn’t even want to speak to his parents. In fact, he had been so self-consumed that he didn’t even think about his sister who had given birth on the same day the ferry sank. His sister, Ji-hyo, who was his best friend in the whole world… She just had a baby and he wasn’t even asking about how the baby was, or if it was healthy or if his sister was okay. Instead, he was spending his days staring at this stupid television screen and thinking about the what ifs. Hell, he still hadn’t shown any sort of emotion since the ferry sank. He just sat or laid there, like an empty shell.

That was when his parents decided to take action. They decided that if Ji-hyo brought the baby in with her, that Kwang-soo might snap out of it. Meet his first niece and hopefully, the healing would start for him. Ji-hyo had been sitting in Kwang-soo’s hospital room with her newborn daughter, Na-yeon, waiting for her brother to say something to her. It wasn’t normal to see her brother like an empty shell. He looked like her brother – smelt like him even. But there was no one home inside. She decided to make a gutsy choice and brought Na-yeon over to Kwang-soo. She placed the baby into his good left arm and announced to him that she needed to go to the toilet.

It was in that moment, where Kwang-soo couldn’t protest or hand the baby back, that he gazed down at the newborn child. In his mind, it began to connect. As soon as Na-yeon’s eyes opened, it was like he was staring at that girl from the ferry. The one that clung onto his arm so tightly. Tears began to fall from his eyes and he raised his other hand to stroke the baby’s face, despite being in pain. This is her, isn’t it? He thought to himself. I couldn’t save her… so God brought her back as a baby. Reincarnation, right? As the thoughts flooded his head, the tears continued and followed by words of affirmations.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t save you..” he managed to whisper to the baby, feeling the tears run down his cheek and his throat tightening “I am… so sorry… I promise… I’ll protect you and love you for forever…” He brought Na-yeon closer to his body, cradling her head. “I’m so sorry I couldn’t bring you back to your parents… Please… forgive me… please…”

But, five years on, she still visited his dreams.

Without a doubt, like clockwork, she always managed to find her way in his dreams.

Every day was a constant reminder of all those people who died while he remained alive. But some days were easier than others. Some days he was able to go to work and get things done and find peace. Some days you wouldn’t have thought he had been in that situation five years ago. But then… there were some days where it was harder. Those days, he found himself drowning himself in Soju and being dependant on pain killers to help with the extreme agony that resided in his shoulder blade. He had admitted himself numerous times into the hospital, claiming that there was something wrong with his shoulder blade. That the metal plate they placed in during the surgery was causing pain and there was some sort of infection. But every time he was turned away and was told it was just muscle memory. That the pain was all in his head.

Every day was something different.

After being released from the hospital back in 2014, he found himself having to appear in numerous court cases to testify. He had to look at his crew members and his captain and confess to them that they were the reasons so many people were dead. He wanted to attend the many protests that happened around this time also but found himself too emotional to attend to them. Eventually, at the beginning of 2015, he found himself enlisting to do his mandatory military work. He had thought to himself, after the accident, that he wanted to start living life to the fullest. There was no point in waiting for his military time and having it hover over his head while he planned his future. So, he embarked on his two-year journey within the military. Due to his shoulder injury, he was placed as a civil worker within Seoul.

And it seemed like he ended up having to monitor possibly every protest regarding the sinking of the ferry. Sometimes the protests were peaceful and he would pay his respect to the families. However, there were times where he would have to work against the protestors. At one rally, a mother became distraught and began to repeatedly hit against his chest as he told her that she wasn’t allowed to go past a restricted area. She screamed at him, saying that he didn’t understand the pain and sorrow she was going through. That her child was never coming back and he wouldn’t understand such pain (probably because he was only twenty-three). It was times like these that broke him; he ended up pushing the pain deep down and continued out his official duties. Pretending that he didn’t know the pain. Pretending that he liked the government. Pretending that she was in the wrong and he was in the right.

He finished his military service at the beginning of 2017 with new hopes of starting a fresh future.

This was when he began to fall into this same old routine. Feeling great, feeling fine and then something would happen to bring him back to ground zero and a dozen of soju bottles. It was a rollercoaster ride. He stayed in Incheon for another year before moving in 2018 to Seoul, moving in with his sister and her husband, Do-yoon, into their apartment complex. At least he was able to spend more time with Na-yeon this way who was becoming an adventurous and inquisitive child. He was welcomed into their house and was able to find work very smoothly. He began to work at the Samsung Main Building in Sousse. Life was going pretty good for… a very long time actually.

Until towards the end of 2018 where the newest Samsung design came out. His boss wanted him to go out onto the floors and promote their newest mobile range with these exact words; “We want you to promote its water resistance – oh, and the focus market is teenagers”. Beginning this marketing campaign broke him. He found himself not being able to sleep without being haunted by the ghosts of those trapped in the ferry still. He drank every night after work and would commonly go to work the next day hung over. He was popping pills every day and going through his old rehabilitation training while at the gym as his shoulder began to ache again. It was all falling apart again.
