Hello there! A couple of important things I feel need to be in this introduction: please be a patient person if you are thinking of reaching out to me. I'm working on some projects and I like to game sometimes and I'm going to be getting a full time job sometime soon. I sometimes get very stressed or busy (and when I get stressed, I tend to work on my personal stories and disappear for a little). I'm looking to make FRIENDS and have a friendship with people, so please keep that in mind while reading this. I'm also only looking for a few of people to roleplay with, so if I don't think we'll click then I'm sorry to say that... it probably won't work out. If this isn't a deterrent for you, then stick around if your interested in some gay ideas!

If you aren't interested in talking outside of the RP, then please click away. I want to make friends and absolutely love talking outside of the RP, and it keeps me invested. I 100% prefer talking over Discord and would be more inclined to RP with you if you have it, but I'm also open to talking over PM's!! My responses might be slower over PM's (or way more chunky). I'm sorry if this deters you, but it's a necessary thing for me.

  • I'm an artist and actually want to have some other artist friends, but this by no means a requirement. I enjoy sharing art tips or crying over peoples art or commenting on it, and sometimes I like showing off my own art. I have several, and I mean several story ideas, and I really like talking about them!! Creating characters and stories is a very big hobby of mine. If I get really into a roleplay or really feel inspired to draw, then I might even draw our characters! Possibly. It's not a promise.

  • Ghost-friendly... ish. If we're friends then I would not like to be ghosted :'( If you don't want to RP anymore or change the plot or put a break on our RP, then I'm super down for that! I'm seriously really flexible with RP stuff with my friends, because I understand that inspiration can die and the RP doesn't really matter in the long-run - to me, it's more about the bond we can create. Having dumb characters to talk about and a story to share with each other is just an added bonus! HOWEVER, if we haven't gotten to know each other well and you want to drop, then that's fine!   • You have to talk with me outside of the roleplay.
    • This means talking about our characters and the story, yes, but also talking about your day or hobbies and junk! I absolutely love talking with my partners and getting to know them on a personal level and befriending them, so being able to talk and form a friendship is very important to me. I definitely prefer talking over Discord, but if you don't have one I'll still give ya a shot over PM's. I just don't really get as invested in an RP if I don't have some fun banter back and forth with my partner! We can talk about our dumb characters or about our lives or our hobbies or pets or anything, really! I'm a pretty open-book and really just want to make some friends!
  • I will only RP M/M as the main pairing.... Well, okay. I might be willing to try something different.
    • I'm perfectly alright with having any other kinds of side pairings, and in fact I would be totally down for some cute lesbians as the mains friends or something!
    • All of my plots are written with the intention of them being m/m, but they can all be applied to any kind of pairing! If you really really REALLY want to RP with me and want to do m/f or f/f or f/nb m/nb or any other kind of pairing then let me know!! I haven't stepped foot outside of m/m in a long time so it's become my comfort zone, but you know what they say about that and taking a trip outside of it, haha!
  • You have to be above the age of 18.
    • As I've mentioned, I'm 24 (25 this year) and feel kind of awkward talking to people under the age of 18. I don't have anything against ya teens, but I like talking about darker themes occasionally (very rarely) and just feel more comfortable talking with people in my age group.
  • Please be patient with me!
    • My reply time varies drastically between once a day to months, but more likely I will reply randomly throughout the week (or month). RARELY I will reply daily, but that's only if I'm feeling the story or characters a lot. Other times, I'm not feeling the right mood to write, or sometimes my mind just doesn't want to figure out how to put sentences together. Not often, but occasionally, I just lose inspiration entirely. It's a brutal cycle that I'm trying to overcome. I'll do my best to keep you updated on how things are going!! But PLEASE nudge me or send me a message if you haven't heard from me in like a week because I do not want to vanish off the face of the planet again :'))
  • I'm looking for someone who wants to talk with me and get to know me as a person, and not just as a person who they roleplay with.
    • I like joking and am very open about a whole bunch of stuff, including where I live (I hate it so dang much!!!) and my family and all kinds of stuff!   • My reply length varies between three paragraphs to 10+ paragraphs and I am a lit/possibly advanced lit writer. Seriously. My posts can be very long.
    • You absolutely do not have to mirror me, and in fact I feel kind of bad if someone feels like they have to. If this isn't a problem for you, then that works out well! I DO appreciate longer replies, but don't feel like you have to do that every reply!! All I ask is that you have something I can reply to, which means at least a few paragraphs. My replies will vary drastically depending on what's happening in the roleplay and how inspired I'm feeling! Conversations will be shorter (usually), but setting a scene or getting inside of my character's head will be longer. I've honestly been writing super long posts recently but I can tone it down... Unless you like to read a lot?
  • I need someone who is flexible with a plot and who will push the plot along.
    • This means that I like adding variation and spice to roleplays, and surprises are always pretty fun! I have general ideas for how my plots can go, but fun distractions or accidents are always a nice touch to a characters journey. Plus, I love hearing what people have to say! Make suggestions!!
  • Please talk with me if you don't like the RP anymore.
    • I am more than willing to change a plot if my partner would want that. Heck, we could come up with an entirely new plot if you'd like! Just talk with me. Let me know how you're feeling. If we're friends, then I'm super down to make different RP's!
  • If you have any triggers or things that make you uncomfortable, please let me know.
    • I don't have any triggers, personally, but I do have two things that make me uncomfortable. They aren't normally brought up in RP's so I don't think they'll be too big an issue at all, but I don't want to cause someone to feel uncomfortable.
  • I love character sheets and tend to always use them before we start roleplaying.
    • For me, it's just a lot easier to keep all my thoughts in one place. I tend to think a lot about characters and having a sheet to throw all my thoughts into is a big help for me. Sometimes I don't actually make them but like 8/10 I'll have a sheet of some sort c: Or a bunch of notes depending on my motivation and understanding of my character pff.
  • I don't use any kind of faceclaim for my characters, as I tend to draw them or use picrews for them.
    • I like to visualize them in my head, because I'm an artist and enjoy designing characters. You CAN use references if you want to, but I definitely favor descriptions more than pictures. I'm just iffy about people claiming that a drawn character is their own, and it's weird to me when someone just... says they're character looks like someone that actually exists in the real world. idk! maybe I'm just strange.
  • I write in third person and past tense (though I do currently have a RP in the dreaded first person and it's actually a lot of fun! :0). I like adding details and having my characters think about things and observe stuff. Basically I just dive right into their heads and get those thoughts out there.
  • I don't care where we roleplay, as long as it's not over Email.
    • I'm fine with roleplaying both on this website, via thread (my big preference) or PM, on Discord and on Google Docs! If we do roleplay on Discord, I ask that we make a separate server so that we can keep everything in one place. If we roleplay on here, I can't guarantee that my posts will be all pretty and edited, but I think the content of them matters more than the aesthetics! Plus I have no idea how to code so :')) You can use coding if you'd like though!
  • I don't RP with uke/sub or seme/dom characters AT ALL. I also am not into furries. Please don't ask me what "position" I want for a character, and don't ask me to pair a character with a furry.
    • Characters are way more then a dumb label. I don't stereotype my characters by whatever they do in bed. I don't RP that stuff, anyway, so it shouldn't matter. I also have nothing against the furries out there, I just have no interest in them.

  I love romance. I do. I am a sucker for love. I love shipping characters together and laughing or crying over the things characters go through. We don't have to necessarily plan any romance out before hand, but I do adore me some romance. Besides that, my favorite genres tend to be fantasy, sci-fi, drama, slice of life, dystopian/post-apocalyptic, fluff and angst! I enjoy throwing in some more spooky elements here and there, and darker themes are a lot of fun to think about, but that depends on the plot.

  Muse A and muse B are pretty close friends, and one day muse A decides to make a stupid decision and makes a bet with muse B. Muse A looses the bet, gracefully (he claims, though it was really not that graceful) and muse B initially laughs at him. However, then it occurs to him: muse A lost, so now that means he has to do whatever muse B says. This could be a lot of fun. Muse B makes A wait for his "punishment", but on the night of a football game B tells A what he has to do: date him for two weeks. Muse A is very confused and slightly alarmed that this is B's suggestion, but B reassures him that he won't do anything too drastic and its really just for fun. A says okay, he'll do it because he has no choice, but there's more to the story than that... Muse A actually has a really stupid and annoying crush on muse B, and muse B keeps wanting to kiss muse A. How risky!

  Muse A and muse B have been friends ever since they were in pre-school, and they know each other better than anyone else. They've supported each other through all kinds of problems, and muse A always was an audience for B's performances. Muse B is a musician; he's naturally talented at playing most instruments. B writes his own songs and often uses A as his, dare I say, muse, and his big aspiration is to hear one of his songs on the radio. However, when it comes to any kind of social life, both boys are incredibly impaired. They're really only friends with each other, and their classmates only know them because of how closely they stick to each other. In fact, there's a rumor going around school that they're dating. This is false, although B wants it to be true. Poor B has an "unrequited love" on A, and he really just wants to kiss A to get him to shut up. However, A keeps yammering on about this and that because he's incredibly nervous to be around B now-a-days. A has no idea why - nothing's changed! A is concerned and nervous, and B is helplessly in love. Please help them.

  Muse A is lost. Lost in various senses: he doesn't know what to do with his life, or he's ruined his relationships, or he's gotten into fights with his parents, or... well, he's a supernatural creature. In a rather large city, where voices get drowned with the sound of honking cars and random music, and people who know who they are. What they are. He wanders into a bookstore one day, mostly out of curiosity (why is it called "Welcome Home"??), and he's surprised to find numerous books on various creatures in the shop. In the bookstore, he meets muse B, who might or might not also be a supernatural creature. Or, potentially, a wizard... or maybe just a kindhearted human. Whatever he is, he seems found: found, as in, he knows who he is, what he wants, what his dreams are. He's comfortable to talk to, and muse A keeps going back to the bookstore to talk to him- no, to read the books about the supernatural creatures... definitely. He does want to figure out what he is, but he also really wants to get to know muse A more, and muse A (who has a couple of secrets himself) seems interested in talking to him more. Maybe muse A could help B reveal his secrets, and maybe muse B could help A figure out what exactly he is... all while dealing with their growing feelings for each other.

  Muse A is an angel who crashed down on Earth. Muse B is a scientist on a team who investigates interesting phenomena. When B's team discovers the existence of A, they take him in to observe him and poke and prod at him. The group isn't very friendly and B feels rather bad for the angel (who claimed to be a harpy), so he asks the team to let him talk with A to calm him. The team agrees and even assigns B to take care of the bird boy, and B is rather excited at the prospect of getting to learn about the angel. A isn't interested in befriending B, but B is persistent, and eventually A opens up and the two form a bond.

  Spoiler: former friends and unvoiced feelings lead to complicated relationships ❀ (F)

  Muse A, a spy, constantly gets on a royal guards, muse B's, nerves. Everything A does bothers B, because B likes A a lot more than he probably should. That makes a bit of sense, though, because the two used to be close friends. They went down different paths and hurt each others feelings, but they still care about each other, hence why A constantly bothers B. When a violent revolution starts in the streets, they end up protecting each other and running away to somewhere safe. There, they decide to team up, because two heads are better than one, and because they used to work well together before their friendship got ruined. As the two try to navigate the treacherous revolutionaries conflicts and lies, feelings resurface and secrets are revealed.... but will they ever be able to rekindle the relationship they once had? Do they even want to go back to that, or do they want to try something different? Only time will tell, but danger is around most corners, and the two never really know who to trust anymore. Better figure out their feelings fast!

  After accidentally falling through a tear in the fabric of time and space, two boys end up on an alien planet set several hundred years from their present. The two, who don’t get along because of rumors and misconceptions, initially blame each other for the problem they now find themselves in. They agree to stick together until they can figure out how to get back home, and after they save each other from a dangerous encounter with a violent plant, they start to think that the other person isn’t too bad. The boys explore the planet and meet aliens, who, surprisingly, speak English, and after secrets are revealed the two start to wonder about and like each other. They bond and run away together, and probably high-jack a spaceship, but all of that doesn’t really help them get back home. They do miss their home, and their families, but most aliens are friendly, and there are some people that actually look like humans. It’s all a little weird and a little bit too familiar, but surely the two are just imagining that… right?

  Humankind knows about the people on Mars; that's old news. They look like humans, talk like humans, act like humans, and people don't really care that much about them anymore. However, when news breaks that the prince of Mars, muse A, is going to be sent to Earth to study at a school, the entire human race becomes incredibly excited. The first martian visitor! Wow! When muse A arrives, he's completely surprised by Earth. It's completely different from what he thought, mostly because there are heroes and villains and people with powers all over the dang place. Powered, dangerous fights happen all the time, and he's just a martian prince trying to get to school. After he gets accidentally involved in a fight between two villains, muse B steps in to save him. It's amazing, truly. Muse B totally kicked the villains butts! But, A has to get to class, and B quickly says goodbye. In class, A is swarmed by people who ask him too many questions, and he gets overwhelmed. A runs away and runs into someone who looks strangely familiar, and then it clicks: that's the guy who saved him earlier! A tries to thank him, but B isn't very friendly and leaves the martian prince. Muse A, stubborn and wanting at least one friend, decides to seek B out and get to know him, to try to become his friend. A game of cat and mouse starts, and A figures out B's hiding locations pretty well. B gets annoyed by this, but he's actually only really annoyed because A is really cute and totally his type.

  Spoiler: A perfect bonding opportunity... ★❀ (SF)

  In a futuristic world parallel to our own, there exist two kingdoms at odds with each other. There exist two princes, muse A and muse B, in those two kingdoms, and they really don't like each other a whole lot. The two royal families hold a meeting to settle the dispute between the princes and come to an agreement; the two princes are to be sent out to another world to assist the citizens of the world together. The mission, their parents say, will help them see eye to eye and help form a connection between both families. Although both princes object, their parents send them out in a spaceship with a sassy cyborg pilot and a mechanic with a chip on his shoulder. The two princes have to deal with each other in close quarters, which is quite a big problem, because of one simple fact. That fact? The reason they can't stand each other is because they both actually like each other. A lot. But they're too stubborn to admit that.

  The world has developed to a point where international travel is easily accessible by many people, but this isn't really about that. It's about muse A, who's from a rather closed off country, and muse B, who's an international spy. Although A is a prince in his country, he doesn't think he's very important in the grand scheme of things. He's the youngest in his family, and he's never been the first one chosen out of his siblings. However, despite this, he just so happens to be muse B's target. The reason for this? Well, it's because A is a member of the royal household, and therefore knows many secrets about the royal family and their plans (supposedly). Muse B tracks A down and meets him, and A immediately suspects him. No one has really ever reached out to him before, but A decides to humor B. After all, it's just a bit of harmless fun, and he actually likes the attention. To B, it's perfect. This is all according to his plans, really, until he starts to develop feelings for the prince. Although B chooses to keep his feelings on the down-low, the feeling is completely mutual; A is smitten. Although both of them realize how dangerous this is. When A tells B he's going to go on a trip to visit other countries, B accompanies him, because he still hasn't gotten the secrets out of A yet, he says. B is trying to keep his career a secret, but A really likes him and really wants to spend more time with him alone and B can't refuse. It's honestly a bit of a mess. Will the two actually get together? Hopefully. Will A ever spill his families secret? Possibly. Will B ever tell A that he was sent to spy on him? Who knows!

  Muse A is a prince. Muse B is also a prince. The two are from different countries and really only know each other by reputation, although they have met officially once or twice before. The two's families decide to strengthen the bonds between their two countries and ask their children to exchange letters with each other. Although the correspondence starts off rather awkward, with all the formalities and having to transcribe the letters by hand, both princes manage to overcome the challenges and find that they get along quite well. Maybe even better than "quite well", honestly. They're families decide to develop the relationship between their two countries even further, and they decide to send their children out together to get to know each other even better. It's probably because they want to arrange a marriage or two, quite frankly. Muse B doesn't really want to meet muse A in person, because he's developed an attraction to the guy behind the letters. Honestly, muse A might be feeling the same way, but it's hard to judge someone based solely on words on paper. When they do meet, though, are when things really start. There are definitely sparks, and then the two princes find out that they have to participate in a competition with their other sibling(s). The prize? Whoever gets first place gets to marry each other!

  Muse A is the son of a nobleman, making him basically royalty. Muse B is a prince, making him actual royalty. Muse A likes to go around the country disguised as a prince, to see how believable of a royal he actually is. The country isn't very familiar with their royal family. Sure, they know the king and queens names, but the royal children are pretty unknown. This is good news for muse A, who has yet to be found out, quite honestly. The mask he has is pretty perfect, until he meets muse B. Who is actually a prince, and who has been sent to figure out what idiot has been spreading lies about his family. When muse B meets A, instead of being mad, he's actually rather charmed, and quite intrigued. Why is someone pretending to be him? It's an interesting situation, but A's actually pretty nervous. Will he get in trouble? Nah. Muse B's actually wanting to explore the country, so he suggests muse A join him, so as to avoid spilling the true identity of the "fake prince" to his family. It's a pretty fair bargain, muse B thinks, and muse A agrees... because he really doesn't want to get in trouble. (Not that he really would, but does he know that? Nope.)

  Muse A and muse B are princes of neighboring countries, and have met each other on more than one occasion. When they're families decide to host a party to celebrate muse B's birthday, muse A goes and wishes him a happy birthday. The two talk and spend time together during the party, but then a violent coup d'etat happens and numerous royals are killed in front of the people in cold blood. The boys manage to escape before they're killed as well, but then when they get to safety they find they have no idea what to do. Why did the coup happen? Who's left alive? Where are they supposed to go now? Muse B is left reeling and devastated, but thankfully muse A seems to have an idea about what to do next...

  Muse A is a prince, and Muse B is a missing prince. One night, B approaches A and begs him to help him get back home. Muse A is incredibly suspicious of muse B, but upon confirmation that the missing prince is who he says he is, he agrees to help him. A wants to go to his family in order to get word out that the missing prince has returned, but B asks him not to. Instead, B asks A to take him back to his country by himself (and on foot). The world can't know that he's returned, because that's too dangerous. That's a lot to ask of anyone, and muse A rightfully refuses. Muse B's kingdom is far away and the journey would take months, at minimum, but A lets B stay with him for a couple of days. After those couple of days are up and the two have gotten to know each other a little, A decides to help B get back home. He wants to explore the world, anyway, and he doesn't have anything to do at home but lounge around all day. The two set off on their journey and discover secrets about each other, and come to care deeply about one another. The big question though: where was muse B during the two years he was missing?

  IDEAS
  - I want to do something with a gang. I want the vibe. Alleys and bruises and bags under eyes. Possibly involving a character who is heavily involved in a gang meeting someone pretty and attractive who absolutely cannot be involved in that dark lifestyle. Except, well, surprise, because that pretty person actually is! Wowie! Probably would want to play pretty person because I love subverting expectations ahaha ★
  
  - Could be a lot of fun to do something with idols!! Mostly Japanese idols since those are the only ones I really have any idea about. Or we could make them whatever kind of idols, I honestly don't care where they are from as long as they are idols. I was thinking something involving fake dating, maybe to keep their fans interested? Or to nudge out another duo of idols who are their rivals? I don't know but I have a pair of idols I'd love to use again :')) ★★
  
  - Kind of wanting to do something involving a bar setting? Or like a brothel??? Idk but like a shady place where shady business deals take place. Was thinking it could be a base of sorts for a spy organization or assassins or something because would anyone look at a bar or brothel for illegal affairs??   ➪ Between ages 14-16, though he could be like... 17 or maybe in college. I'd prefer to play him as a teenager.
  ➪ An absolute brat who does problematic stuff for attention. He's gotten arrested by the cops over ten times but he's never gotten into actual legal trouble because all of his crimes are very petty. He's like, friends with some of the cops and knows them by name, okay, he is That Guy. He skips school a lot and loves to get into trouble but, as I said before, it is alllll for attention because this boy? Has a very sad home life. His best friend is his dog.
  ➪ Could fit into either a slice of life plot or a plot with supernatural elements, because in his original roleplay he had fire powers (that he actually had very good control of).
  
  Adrian Belrose, my very first asshole.
  ⇢ His age varies because I've used him in lots of other plots. Between 17-25, but his age will absolutely affect the person he is.
  ⇢ As a teenager, he is a complete jerk. Unfriendly, bitter, jaded, mean, rude, prickly, surly, etc etc. He keeps people at a distance and is very emotionally damaged and has A Lot of issues. As a young adult, he tries very hard to be better and hates the past self that he was, because he burned so many bridges and made so many people hate him. As a 25 year old, he's gotten significantly better and actually is much more willing to show the person that he kept hidden through his childhood. He loves history and plants and he also was an electrical technician for his high school once, but that's just a fun fact >uO.
  ⇢ Could fit in basically any genre. I'd love to put him in literally anything. He was a prince in a fantasy once, he was almost an elf, he was a Pokemon Trainer, he was a high school senior who lowkey ruled the school, he was also a runaway in an orphan city. He's... incredibly versatile. Oh! He comes with a cousin, too.
  
  Percy Pickle, paranormal investigator extraordinaire.

  ⇝ Percy Pickle is a Youtuber that posts videos about his supernatural/paranormal investigations. He's definitely a very good investigator and he has had loads of supernatural experiences, definitely! He's incredibly passionate about his investigating and he has quite a dedicated fanbase on Youtube, mostly because he does not back down when things get dangerous and he has broken into places before to follow a lead. He has quite a tragic backstory involving uhm... an organized crime group, maybe, possibly, that I lowkey forgot about and I feel bad I broke him so badly, but he's mostly alright now!!
  ⇝ I'd LOVE to throw him into a plot that has supernatural characters of literally any sort. And maybe gang troubles. Maybe. Him being a human investigator investigating supernatural things while being surrounded by the supernatural is basically his entire deal.
  
  Marley Foster, the sickly one.
  ➻ Aged either 17, 19 or 22.
  ➻ This boy? A sweetheart. Very kind. Gentle. Soft. Cinnamon roll. He had a bad heart (or other health related issue) growing up and in certain settings his backstory is pretty sad, but all his struggles with his health has made him very resilient and compassionate. In his original RP, pain was in store for him, and... honestly in other ones, too, he had pain waiting to get him. He's very nice though. 10/10 would recommend meeting.
  ➻ His RP history has been very interesting because he was in a sci-fi post-apoc originally, where he got Painful Powers (wings grew out of his back and he went blind), and then he was a prince on a pirate ship, and then he was the sweetheart of a gang. He's versatile and fits in lots of different genres EXCEPT slice of life.

Let's ignore the fact that Aris has broken over twenty skateboards and has an extra like thirty hiding around his house as backups, okay, don't pay any attention to that. Let's also ignore the fact that he's kind of sometimes a troublemaker but he's actually not a bad kid and he just wants to be noticed and to succeed as a musician and fall in love with someone, just one person, just one. And let's ignore the fact that Avril Lavigne's Sk8er Boi is his theme song and he's scared of ghosts and hurting his hands and having his musical talents be revealed because he is an absolute BADASS and no one can know about his stammer or that he lost a week of his memories when he was younger, okay? Okay.
  ↝ Would love to throw him into a plot that has supernatural elements (ghosts???) or aliens or something else kind of spooky. He could fit in a slice of life or modern fantasy, though! He's pretty flexible.

  Julian listened quietly as Mickey explained his plan for the game, and the blond had to admit that it wasn't the worst idea he heard before. It could be better, but Julian wasn't in the mood to ruin Mickey's happiness anymore, so he just hmm'd along as the counselor drew out the plan in the sand. The stick figure illustration was pretty much useless to the actor: he was good at following verbal instructions, since he had to listen to his acting peers frequently and he received guidance from his acting coach and directors. The plan would probably work, too, even if it was pretty simple. He doubted the children they would be going up against would suspect a distraction, it most likely wouldn't even cross their minds, unless they were actually experts at these types of games. Julian agreed with the plan for the most part, but then Mickey said he'd jump out of a tree. That, he did not agree with.
  
  "Wait, wait." He held a hand up as Mickey covered his plan up with dirt. He gave the counselor a withering look, but Mickey just stood up and asked if it was a flawless plan. "No." Julian shook his head and ran his hair through his hair, to move his bangs away from his eyes. "Jumping from a tree seems so stupidly dangerous and reckless. It's just a game - you don't need to jump from a tree to get the flag. It doesn't really matter-" he was cut off by Mickey grabbing his hand and pulling him along, before he even got to finish what he was saying. He was so surprised by the sudden gesture that he let out a laugh, but then he clamped his mouth shut and planted his feet into the ground, yanking his hand away from Mickey.
  
  "You-" he let out a huff and fixed his hair again, but he brushed his beanie off as he did so. He huffed again and shoved it into his coat pocket, then he ran both hands through his hair and frowned at Mickey. "You can't just jump out of a tree," he said, shaking his head. "That's too dangerous and stupid. Can you even climb a tree nimbly and quietly? Wouldn't the kids hear you scraping? And, gee, don't you think kids might try to copy you if they see you doing that?" He cocked an eyebrow, crossing his arms. "I'm sure you don't want to leave a mark on the impressionable youth. I can be a distraction, whatever, but do you really want to risk the kids copying you? Monkey see, monkey do, right?"

  Aris let out a laugh when Toya mentioned a dress code inspection. Oh my god. No. That was so fucking ridiculous. How strict could this place be? It was hell, Aris decided. He had moved to Japan, which was nice and pretty, but this school was hell. It made sense. Everyone was going to be speaking a foreign language, and he was going to be the odd one out. The adults in charge wanted complete control over the students appearances and refused individuality. That was hell. That was the exact definition of hell. He should have actually skipped, he realized. It would be delaying the inevitable, but so what? Maybe if he waited a day he'd have been able to convince his parents to send him to a different school that was not as terrible as this one.
  
  He was maybe being a bit unfair. The thought crossed his mind for a moment, but he kicked it out. He was being completely fair. He hadn't even gone into the building yet, but he already knew that it would be awkward and horrible and he'd feel so nervous and god he really did not want to worry about his stupid stutter. He'd be fine. He would be fine and he wouldn't stutter at all, especially not in front of all the strangers and oh man did he have an accent when he was speaking Japanese? Of course he probably did. Ugh.
  
  He squinted when Toya started walking to the school. Thankfully the rule-follower could not hear how his thoughts spiraled. He kicked off after him and coasted next to him, looking the much shorter boy over. He was so much smaller than Aris was, even without the skateboard adding a couple inches. Was he a first year? Like, fourteen or something? "What grade are you in?" he asked, holding a hand out to the top of Toya's head. He compared it to his own height but didn't comment on the difference, because he didn't know if the boy was conscious of his height at all. He instead smiled and glanced at the gate, then looked back at Toya. "Are you liking the lollipop?"
  
  Like an idiot, Aris wasn't paying attention to where he was going. He didn't notice the girl who was talking to the coach, and he didn't notice that he was quickly getting closer to them. He felt his skateboard run into something soft and stumbled off of it, bumping into the girl. It was another shorty, and he was a foot taller than her, and she was wearing skates. The following fall was not surprising, because two people on wheels colliding is always a bad time, but Aris immediately clambered off the girl. His skateboard rolled away from them uselessly, back toward the line of students. "I'm so sorry, oh my god," he said, in English, again, because it was what he felt more comfortable speaking. "I didn't mean to run into you at all, I swear." He stood and held a hand out to her, giving her his best apologetic look. "Are you okay?" he asked, then squeezed his eyes shut and smacked his formerly offered hand against his forehead. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hit you. Are you okay?" he asked again, in Japanese, holding his hand back out to her.

  The hissing and popping of the pod lid opening up was nothing but jarring to Frey. He saw all of the other students in their pods, waking up from the simulation as well, but he felt something warm roll down his cheek. Everyone had been killed. Because of him. He felt the weight on his chest and tried to breathe, but he found that he couldn’t inhale. He knew the white walls around him. It might have been his first time in a simulation, but this was the pod room. He knew that. It had been a simulation. He knew. The academy hadn’t really exploded, and he hadn’t been captured. Everyone hadn’t actually died.
  
  He knew that, but it felt so terribly real.
  
  Torin’s neck. His head, almost completely off his body. The blood from his leader's neck, pooling under him, still warm. Bluu’s eyes losing the life in them as she lost the fight against that awful cat creature. Xio being forced away before she could even do anything. It was all so fast. None of them had been prepared for the attack. That crazy man, with the horrible gas mask and the creatures, had caught them completely by surprise and… he had been useless.
  
  It felt real. All of it. He could smell the smoke he had exhaled, and he could see death take his teammates. He could hear the explosions from the first bombs, and he had sensed the fear from everyone who had been running out of the buildings. He could still feel the net pinning him to the ground, leaving him completely useless while his teammates died. The smell of Torin’s blood, and Bluu’s desperate whimpers as she fought for her life. The academy, blowing up, and the horrible villain saying he had caused this entire thing.
  
  “And you have led countless bodies to their grave.”
  
  He moved to get out of the pod, but his eyes were too blurry to see clearly, and he fell out of it instead. He hit the ground hard, but it didn’t even hurt. He felt more tears fall from his eyes, and a sob escaped him. He covered his mouth and squeezed his eyes shut, curling into a ball.
  
  It was his fault. It was because he was here, at the academy. The mad scientist had killed everyone at the academy because of what he was, because of all of his ridiculous capabilities. His friends had died. His team had died. Uzali had died. Mars died. Faene died. Xan and TJ and Abel and Arlar died. Everyone that he knew, all of his classmates and teachers, had died. Because of him. He was the sole reason the attack had even happened. If he hadn’t been at the academy, then everyone would have been safe. He was at the academy, though, currently. What if an attack like that actually happened because of him?
  
  Was he endangering everyone here?
  
  He tried to steady his breathing, but he could feel the shake throughout his body. It was just a simulation. He bit his lip so as to not let out another sob. It was fake. No one is actually hurt. He thought someone said something to him, but he couldn't tell who. He thought he heard someone ask a question, how everyone was coping. The academy was still standing, and he knew that. He could feel the ground beneath him and the pod against his back. He knew that he was safe, that everyone was safe, that the academy was safe. When he looked up again, everyone would be alive, and they’d be talking about the simulation or fighting with each other about what they could have done better.
  
  He couldn’t look up again. He couldn’t face everyone. He couldn't look at their faces and see them, and pretend like it was fine, because he had gotten them all killed.

  Oh my god. The magician had done something to this stranger. He felt himself pale when the ginger nodded and tried to quickly think through the spells he'd memorized. What could he have done? He had no idea. Nothing was standing out to him. If he could remember any words he had said, or the rhythm of the incantation, or even how long he had spoken for, that would help him pinpoint exactly what spell he had cast onto this man. Was it pain? Was he in pain? Or was it something else? Could it be one of the appearance spells he'd discovered from his great-grandfather, who always loved to pull pranks on people? He waited, apprehensive, to see what next action the stranger would take. The magician was expecting him to charge at him, to punch him for enchanting him, but instead he said something that felt like stab in his stomach.
  
  “In love. I think I’m in love with you. God, I am. I am so in love with you. Please, make it stop.”
  
  The magician let out a terrified, stuttering laugh. "What?" he whispered, wide-eyed. No way. There was no way. This stranger had just threatened, no, he tried to kill him. He wouldn't be in love with him. There was no reason, no logic, no sense. It was preposterous and wild. He let out a soft laugh as the stranger grabbed at his heart. God, he was being melodramatic now, too? Playing up this confession like it was a real thing. It couldn't be real; there was no way. He couldn't have done anything that drastic to this poor guy, who seemed to be in genuine pain and utter agony. The magician watched him for a moment longer, then quickly opened his bag and pulled out his spell book.
  
  He felt shaky and unsteady as he breezed through the pages. This was terrifying. He didn't want to believe he had done this, because he had never done anything like this to anyone before. There were spells that could alter peoples feelings and emotions, yeah. He had practiced them when he was younger, along with his classmates. His professors had never taught anyone about a spell to make someone fall in love, though. There was no way that he had just done that to this stranger. The magician only knew about love potions or elixirs, and he didn't even know how to brew a potion. That was his brothers specialty. Had his brother ever created a potion to make someone fall in love? He couldn't remember, but the answer was most likely no. He skimmed through the words on each page he flipped to, searching for anything that would cause this stranger to feel like this.
  
  There was nothing. Of course there was nothing. The blond knew this book like his life depended on it, because it did. Magicians had to know their spell books better than themselves, since they relied on them so frequently for everything. He continued to skim every spell he had written down, and the notes on how his magic worked, thinking, perhaps, that he had done something different accidentally. He knew that was incredibly improbable, especially considering his magic practically forbade him from doing most things differently. His magic was very particular and finicky about how he was able to access his different magical skills - he wouldn't have even been able to perform magic in any other various way.
  
  It didn't even register in his head when the stranger spoke again. He didn't see the malicious intent in his eyes, and he hadn't noticed that he had fallen on one knee. He was too panic-stricken, trying to figure out what he had done. He had a single thought in the back of his mind, the only one that made any hint of sense to him, but he didn't want to even consider it. After he had flipped through his spell book for the sixth time, the magician looked back at the stranger, desperate to reverse what he'd done. He saw the expression on the man's face and paled again, suddenly acutely aware of the distance between them. The man would be able to charge at him if he really meant to kill him.
  
  The magician stood in his place, still for a moment, trying to collect his thoughts and calm his racing heart. He brushed his bangs back and ran a hand through his hair, letting out a breath. This was a nightmare. "I don't know," he started, inhaling sharply, "what..." He looked down at the book in his hand. "There's nothing in my book," he said softly, staring at the cover of the journal. "There's nothing at all about any spell that makes someone fall in love. That's not even an actual enchantment. I mean, it wouldn't be, because that's manipulating a powerful feeling and bending it to your will. Potions can manipulate emotions more easily, and specific spells also enable that, but love and hate are two incredible powerful feelings. We were prohibited from learning how to control them. I don't even think there's- It'd be a curse." Realization dawned on him and he felt his throat close up, and he let out a choked breath. He covered his mouth and felt tears prick at his eyes. "It's a curse."
  
  He never had cursed anyone in his life. The magician never participated in any dark magic. He stayed as far away from it as he could. But this, this spell he had cast, it couldn't be anything else. He felt his heart hammer against his chest and realized he was shaking. He looked down at his spell book, then silently put it back into his bag. It wouldn't be able to help him. The curse couldn't be reversed by any spell he knew. He didn't even know what curse he had cast, since he wasn't even aware that he had memorized any curses.
  
  His eyes caught on the other spell book in his bag. He pulled the journal out hesitantly. This journal was one his aunts had given him when he had turned eighteen. It was full of a spells in a language he didn't recognize, but the magician had been working on deciphering it over the past couple of years. He had been getting closer and closer to figuring it out, and he was starting to comprehend some of the words in the spells. He flipped through the book nervously, not even sure what he was looking for. After he didn't see anything that stood out to him on the pages, he looked back at the stranger and closed his journal.
  
  "I.... I offer my sincerest apologies," he started, returning his aunts spell book back to his bag. His arm hurt, again, worse than before, and he could feel blood running down his skin. He looked back at the man and stared, then sighed. "I don't know how, but I believe I've cursed you with... well, being in love with me. Somehow. I..." he hesitated and ran his hand through his hair again, pushing his bangs away from his eyes. "Unless you just suddenly fell for me after I shocked you, which I doubt." He tried for a joke, to lighten the mood, but his heart sagged. "I can't reverse it now. I'm unaware of how to remove it."
  
  He took a tentative step towards the stranger, but didn't make any further movements. "It wasn't my intention to curse you. I've never even attempted to curse someone before, in my entire life. I..." He shook his head. "I am so sorry. I know that, uh, well, you probably don't forgive me at all, which is perfectly understandable. I want to help fix this, though. It would pain me greatly to have you continue to suffer." He grabbed his bags strap and met the strangers eyes. "Please allow me to help reverse this curse. I can't leave you like this."
  
  
  Spoiler: LONGEST, group starter

  “The boat’s just left port,” Telltale announced, bumping playfully against Jasper’s shoulder. Jasper sighed and looked out toward the ocean. “Everyone will be here in about thirty minutes! How exciting!”
  
  “It’s really not exciting,” Jasper grumbled, pushing the robot away gently. Telltale floated through the air, then bounced off Trent’s shoulder as well. The boys were sitting on the sand, near the play area. If they squinted, they could see the pier from their spot on the beach. “It’s actually pretty fucking nerve-wracking, Telly,” he muttered, frowning. Telltale let out a beep in response, and Jasper glanced at the robot.
  
  “The swear word has already been forgotten, don’t worry!” Telltale said cheerfully, and Jasper’s mouth twitched at the corner. “Are you two ready to meet everyone?” the robot asked, and Trent let out a nervous laugh.
  
  “I’m not,” he mumbled, and Jasper turned his attention back to the horizon. “I had difficulty getting to sleep last night, honestly.” He looked at Telltale, who floated back toward Jasper. The blond stopped the robot before he could be bumped and pushed him away again, and the floating rabbit-eared machine giggled. “There are bags under your eyes, Jazzy,” Trent pointed out.
  
  “Yeah, well, that’s what happens when the TIES jerks run you around the island doing all their chores because they’re too lazy to do them themselves.” Jasper glanced at Trent, then looked at the blankets in his lap. “I don’t want anyone to come to the island either, though, you know. I’m not really looking forward to meeting all the newbies. At all.” He tilted his head back toward the trees beyond the shops. “I’ve discovered loads of hiding places over there, in that forest. You can join me in hiding, Trent. We don’t need to go meet all the newbies at the pier. They can just deal with everything by themselves.”
  
  Trent laughed, shaking his head. “That’s a good idea, but we'd be found quickly, wouldn't we?” he asked, and Jasper narrowed his eyes. “Because of this guy.” He nudged Telltale back to Jasper, and the robot beeped happily. “It’s a good idea. A really good idea. But I doubt it’d work out. I’m sure someone would manage to find us, even if Telltale didn’t tell anyone anything.” He let out a breath and peered at Jasper, studying his face. “I know you couldn’t sleep last night. I saw you by the pool talking with Telly.” Jasper let out a huff. “You’ve been really helpful the past few days. I don’t know if anyone has thanked you yet, but thank you for everything you’ve done. With the group chat and tidying up the house and talking with the TIES guys. At least after today we’ll get to relax.”
  
  “Unlikely, but try to keep up that hope for the both of us,” Jasper said, and Trent shrugged. “I wouldn’t put it past all those assholes to have us wake up at the crack of dawn tomorrow for one of their stupid games.” Telltale beeped again, and Jasper let out a sigh. “Please, Telly.”
  
  “Already forgotten!” Telltale said, bumping against Jasper’s shoulder again. Jasper tapped the robot toward Trent, then looked back at blankets in his lap. Trent dropped his eyes down to the blankets in his lap as well.
  
  The two boys were currently waiting for instructions on what to do with the five blankets they had been given. They had been busy all week long working on chores and tasks that the TIES Committee had assigned to them, and the blankets were supposedly the last thing that they had to deal with before everyone got there. With the boat leaving California, it seemed like that was actually the case. It wasn’t surprising that the boys didn’t trust the TIES Committee with this information; after all, they had tricked both Jasper and Trent all throughout the week and given them even more to do every day leading up to this wonderful Friday morning.
  
  A wooden platform had been put out overnight in the play area by some people from the TIES Committee, and Jasper had kicked it earlier that morning to test it’s stability. It didn’t budge, and he had cursed, because kicking the solid wood had hurt his toes. When Trent had pointed out that kicking the platform was a stupid idea, Jasper had told him this entire island was a stupid idea, and then Telltale had brought the blankets over to the two of them in one of his baskets. They had accepted the blankets, but Telltale hadn’t received any further instructions for what to do with the blankets yet.
  
  And so they were sitting on the beach, under the early summer sun, with multiple blankets in their laps. It was hot, and they hadn’t gotten to have breakfast yet, and Telltale was not being very helpful. Cute and distracting, sure, but not helpful. He had told both of the boys two days ago that the first activity would be something rather embarrassing. It was an activity that they had done last time, and both boys almost immediately knew what it would be. They had asked Telltale to just confirm their suspicions, but the robot said he couldn’t say anything yet, since it was supposed to be a surprise.
  
  Typical. This was absolutely typical from the TIES Committee. Jasper had sent a voice message through Telltale to the people who had been giving him and Trent all of their tasks, and he had told Telltale to not bleep out any of his words. There was no response yet, but the boys knew there would be no response, because there was never any response, unless it was to tell them what to do.
  
  The two boys had been told a month ago that they would be tour guides this time around, and that they would also participate in the experiment again. That made no sense to either of them. When they had asked for further explanation, such as why either of them were even still here, or what being a tour guide even intelled, or if they even had a choice, they had been ushered out of the TIES facility and sent back to their rooms. The house that they were staying in had basically become their home by this point, since they had been on the island for almost seven months now. The TIES Committee had told them they’d be excellent tour guides, because they knew so much about the island already. And that was the end of that conversation.
  
  To pass the time while they had waited for the newbies to arrive to the island, the boys each picked up their favorite activities again. Trent learned how to bake various different pastries and sweets to give to some of the people when they arrived. Jasper had taken equipment from the TIES facility and spent his free time tinkering away at something in his room. The experimental baked goods were given to the TIES committee members who visited the cafe, and the mechanical invention was currently residing on a bed in a room that belonged to a specific ranch hand. Trent baked more of the sweets and had set them out on the counter in the kitchen for anyone to take whenever all of the newbies came into the house. Jasper made sure to grab one to make sure it was perfect.
  
  Now, though, they were stuck waiting. And it was so boring.
  
  Jasper threw the three rolled up blankets in his lap onto the wooden platform in the play area, then fell back against the sand. “Lil rabbit,” he said, reaching a hand up. Telltale hovered over to him and pressed against his palm. “Can you get us food while we suffer in the sun?”
  
  “And sunscreen?” Trent asked, nudging Jasper’s leg. “Don’t want Jazzy to get even more freckles.” Jasper gave Trent a thumbs up, and he laughed when Jasper’s arm dropped back onto his stomach.
  
  “Yes, I will!” Telltale said, but then beeped twice. Jasper squinted up at him, then covered his eyes with both arms to protect them from the sun. “Oh, the TIES Committee has finally reached out to me. They want you two to lay out the blankets for the first activity everyone is going to be doing once they arrive.”
  
  “What’s the activity?” Trent and Jasper asked at the same time, and Jasper nudged Trent’s leg with his knee. Trent pushed Jasper’s knee away.
  
  “Lookie-Loo,” Telltale responded, and Jasper groaned and covered his face with his hands. “Surprise!” Trent pressed a blanket against his face and let out a groan as well. “I’ll let the dread grow while I go get you guys breakfast. Muffins, here I come!” The robot floated away from the boys, then picked up speed and went further into the island.
  
  “Telly’s so human sometimes,” Trent mumbled, pulling the blanket away from his face. He watched as Jasper sat up again. “He just left us after dropping that awful news like it wasn’t a big deal. That’s such a cheeky thing to do. I wonder who he learned that from.”
  
  “You know how I said this experiment was going to absolutely fucking suck?” Jasper asked, cocking an eyebrow. “Like, back when we got told we got to go again, like it was some god damn prize. Remember?”
  
  “I was there too, so yes.”
  
  “I think I was one hundred percent correct.”
  
  “I don’t want to straight out agree with you, but I think I might have to.” Trent looked at the blankets in his lap, then sighed. “This is absolutely going to fucking suck.” He looked at Jasper when he didn’t respond, then shrugged when he saw his friends’ surprised expression. He tossed his blankets onto the platform, then stood and wiped some sand off his legs. “Let’s just get everything set up and pretend like it’ll be fun.” He held his hand out to Jasper.
  
  “Who the fuck are you even gonna choose?” Jasper asked, taking Trent’s hand and pulling himself up. “Jesus. God.” He took his hand back and ran it through his hair, and Trent kicked at a blanket on the platform. “Who the fuck am I going to choose?”
  
  “Guess we’ll have to figure it out later. Let’s just deal with the dread and set up the blankets, then eat our muffins and wait for the boat on the pier.” Trent picked a blanket up and tossed it at Jasper, who caught it and scowled. “Okay?
  
  “I hate everything about this entire experiment,” Jasper said, untying the string around the blanket he was holding. “But okay. Sure.” The blanket unfurled in his hands and brushed against the sand, and Jasper tossed it onto the platform. “No fucking problem.”

  I turned on the faucet and splashed water onto my face to try to wash away that thought.
  
  “Quinton!” Bodhi called for me, sing-songy and annoying.
  
  I toweled dry my face quickly and took a quick breath, then let it out in a huff. I was fine. I looked fine and I was fine, even though my heart was in shards and I did not want to leave my house to face the world or any of my friends or newfound ex. But I was not going crazy. I was just sad and broken hearted and I needed to put on breakup songs and get the fuck over it because I was too young to let this bring me down.
  
  I left the bathroom and went into the kitchen. Eve was chowing down on the wet food she got for breakfast and Bodhi was sashaying around the island humming a melody I immediately recognized.
  
  “Why are you humming my song?” I asked, squinting. “Why are you dancing around so happily? You do know that it’s not meant to be a happy song, right?”
  
  “I’m just in a good mood, dude!” Bodhi hopped onto the island and kicked his legs back and forth, grinning. “You’re fruit is in a baggy in the fridge. I know yolo, but it’s my professional opinion that you really need to consume more food than three slices of apple and six grapes and four chunks of cantaloupe as your only food for the day.”
  
  “You’re a professional at what, exactly?” I arched an eyebrow. He smirked and shrugged very animatedly. I went over to the fridge and grabbed the fruit. “If you were actually a professional, I don’t think you would call me dude and say yolo like its an actual word.”
  
  “You know what I have to say to that, Quinton?” He grinned.
  
  I wasn’t in the mood to humor him. “What place hired you?” I asked, changing the subject so perfectly and deftly that he would absolutely not notice.
  
  “Oh, rejected! Shot through the heart!” He grabbed at his chest and fell back against the island counter, almost knocking over the paper towels on it. He noticed my change in subject. “He doesn’t care about my thoughts, guys,” he said, to the ceiling, because he was so weird. “However will I do this when the chosen one is so abrasive?”
  
  “I’m not abrasive,” I said defensively, frowning. “I’ve just had a bad morning.” I sighed, deflating. I set the fruit on the counter, giving up on this stupid conversation. I had no desire to argue with anyone this morning. “Didn’t you say today was your first day?”
  
  “Yeah!” He sat up and beamed at me. “My first day as your co-worker!”
  
  My brain paused, grinding to a halt. I blinked rapidly then shook my head. I tried to restart my brain but it was frozen in place. “Excuse me?”
  
  “Oh, come on, Quinton!” He groaned and ran his hands down his face. “You got me that job at Cupid’s Arrow because you thought it’d be nice to work together. Don’t you remember? I was so grateful you talked to your boss for me because he, like, really scared me.”
  
  I stared at him, not... not remembering. Nope. I had no recollection of doing that. I didn’t ever talk to my boss about letting anyone else work at the café except for myself, back when we first met, back when I first moved here. I didn’t even know anyone in this town except for my co-workers/friends at the café and, like, three regulars.
  
  Bodhi wasn’t a co-worker or a regular. He also wasn’t a friend. He... was... who, exactly?
  
  “You really don’t remember?” he asked, wide-eyed, pleading. “Dang. I think you really did hit your head. That expression on your face is kinda scary. Come over here.” He beckoned me over to him, arms out like he was expecting a hug.
  
  I didn’t move. I had no idea who this was. I didn’t recognize him. He was not ever in my life before this morning. He was a stranger. He was a stranger in my house and he was acting like he was my friend and I thought he was. But he was not.
  
  He was not.
  
  The stranger pursed his lips and slid off the counter, coming over to me, studying me like I was something for him to dissect or some new problem. I moved away from him, desperate to keep some space between us. I didn’t know him. I had no idea who he was. There was a stranger in my house and he was manipulative and he tricked me somehow and- and-
  
  “Well, this is interesting,” he murmured, ceasing his movements. He became so still and I felt like I couldn't breathe. “It’s unraveling, isn’t it? That really is not supposed to happen. I wonder if this is foreshadowing or if I just screwed it up already, somehow. Oh, that’d really suck. I don’t think I’m that bad at all of this.”
  
  “Who are you?” I croaked out, choking on the scratchiness in my throat.
  
  “I’m your friend.” He took a step toward me. I tried to move back but ran into the counter. “I’m your co-worker.” He was getting closer. “I’m your roommate.”
  
  “You’re a stranger,” I whispered, trying to find something to use to defend myself. The knives were too far away and all that was near me were some bagels that would be useless against him.
  
  “No.” He smiled wide. My heart nearly left my chest. “My name is Bodhi.”
  
  The fizzling fuzzy crackling noise hissed in my ears again, but this time I heard the snap that silenced it.

  It should have been raining.
  
  Rain always helped with situations like this.
  
  The sun was high in the sky, just slightly off from being directly overhead. Probably around one or two in the afternoon. It was a chilly day for California, though it was March so the cooler temperature made some sense. There were sparse white clouds idling in the sky above the pale blond haired hero, ignorant and completely oblivious to the scene underneath them.
  
  His roots were showing. He had realized this morning and had meant to touch them up before he went out. His natural dark brown color would never reveal enough to his fans and the media, but he didn’t think he’d ever be able to wear his natural color confidently. There were different strands of various colors hidden among the brown locks, making his natural hair quite pretty, but also far too obvious.
  
  This situation was also far too obvious, he knew.
  
  He tapped his cheek with the index finger on his cleaner hand and breathed out slowly. Slowly. Carefully. Evenly. Three seconds in, two seconds out. Repeat only five times, because any longer and it would lose its effect. One of the things his parents taught him to do, in order to silence his nerves and clear his head. One of the things he did far too often the past three years.
  
  Exactly three years. To the day. And the hour. And the minute.
  
  How absolutely perfect.
  
  This situation was miserable. It was so bloody. Unfortunate. Tragic. It would definitely make all the headlines when it was discovered. He wondered who they’d blame as the main suspect. A villain, possibly. Though the wound on the neck was too precise to belong to anyone except one person.
  
  Well, more than one person, but he could never say anything about that. Or about this.
  
  He’d be expected to, though. Because he knew the body at his feet. Personally. Intimately. They had been close. Closer than he should have let himself get to anyone in this business. He had been careless, and he kept being careless, even though he had always done his best not to be. All that he said and done and pretended at was so carefully planned and constructed so that nothing like this could throw him off. It had all been so well thought out, but this had to happen and ruin everything.
  
  He tried to ignore the ugly dark dangerous feeling in his chest. Stifled it. Snuffed it out. Becoming emotional now would not resolve anything. Emotions only got in the way. Separating oneself from them was the trick to surviving in the world he had been raised in.
  
  He knew that. He did. It had been drilled into his head all of his life.
  
  He had once been so good at doing it, too. Better than the others. Better than he should have been, for his age and disposition.
  
  All he had to do now was become good at it again.
  
  The stark white lines on the hero’s dark arms bore into his eyes. He stared at them. There was blood on the hero’s arms, dyeing the white paint a deep red color that would never come out. There were small droplets and smears from where he had grabbed the hero’s arms. He brought his gaze up further, slowly. The fingers of the hero were covered in blood, from grasping at the killing cut in a useless attempt to stop the bleeding. The casual outfit, but not a hero suit, was completely coated in the red liquid, fully saturated and entirely ruined. The shirt and jeans would never be worn again, so it didn’t matter.
  
  The killing cut was clean. Precise. Almost surgical. It had been too easily accomplished. The hero’s neck was only red now, from the large slice that tore across his throat and cut his jugular in half. His dead face must have looked a certain way, but the hero standing over him could not bring himself to even glance at it.
  
  Not anymore. Not after what happened. Not after what had just happened. Not after what he saw. Not after what he did. Not after what he did not do.
  
  There was nothing he could do, now. Not anymore. Not if he wanted to.
  
  That was too close to emotional.
  
  Adlai Marlowe, otherwise known as Median, took a deep breath and held it for three seconds, then breathed out for two. The body in front of him was just a body. The person it had been was no longer there. It was an empty shell. It’s inhabitant had been sent off to some other place.
  
  It was just a body. An empty shell. It didn’t matter that it looked like his friend, the person he had thought of so fondly, so fondly he had called him one of the closest friends he had ever made in all his twenty-two years of life. The person who he involved in so many stupid plans and schemes and media stunts. The person who had been there for him through everything, and who had promised him he’d be there for him once everything was finally over.
  
  But here it was. The end. Everything was finally over, after three years. After so much drama and blood and tears and all the confessions and love from fans and admiration from other heroes and friendships and all his hopes and dreams. After all his plans.
  
  The body was here, but Darren Mensah, otherwise known as Outcast, was not.
  
  The ugly dark dangerous feeling knocked against his heart, asking to be let out, to let him feel what he could not allow himself to feel. He took another deep breath.
  
  He was no good at separating himself from his feelings anymore.
  
  He had to be.
  
  He needed to think of this logically. Outcast had been his mentor and friend, and the public knew that. The fans had created that stupid ship name for them and both of them had encouraged it. He and Outcast were seen together frequently, and they worked together several times, and their interactions were well documented. It was obvious they knew each other outside of their uniforms. Ren had shown him his scars, and Adlai had done the same, and they helped heal each other, and they shared too much with each other, and they got too close, and Adlai knew better than to do that, and he almost told him—
  
  Another breath. Another breath. Another breath.
  
  Outcast had been his mentor. The mentorship had been at the start of everything, but people would not forget that Outcast had mentored young hotshot mysterious wind hero Median. Mentors and their pupils usually always had good, lasting relations with each other, just like Outcast and Median had.
  
  The wound on the neck was so clean. Even if someone analyzed it closely, they would not find any jagged edge to the skin. It had been inflicted with no tool, but with something else sharp and vicious. The police would learn it had been made from some power, and it would not take them long to narrow down their list of suspects.
  
  His blood was on the ground, mixed in with the pool underneath the body. There were droplets splattered against the wall, some of them his own, most of them belonging to the body. Adlai could see from the corner of his eye that Ren, no, no, no, the body, had his mask on, but that wouldn’t mean anything if anyone saw the blood on his hands. It was so much, all over his own skin, and it didn’t even belong to him.
  
  Looking down at them sent flashbacks to memories he did not want to remember replaying through his head like some horrific film reel.
  
  He squeezed his eyes shut and ran his hands through his hair several times, ignoring the still wet blood on them, and took more than five deep breaths and breathed out slowly more than five times.
  
  All of what he noticed, the police would notice. Which meant he might be screwed.
  
  He removed his hands from his hair and realized he just got blood in it, but only spared that realization a single thought. There was a small note in the pocket of his jacket, and he pulled it out. Bloody fingerprints stained the edges of the folded paper as he flipped it open.
  
  NEXT: SPITFIRE OR CAPRICORN
  
  Rereading it over and over again did not do anything. The words did not change. NEXT: SPITFIRE OR CAPRICORN. Four words. A colon. It was plain and simple.
  
  Carefully he folded it in half again and slid the slip of paper back into his pocket. It was small enough to not even stick out even slightly from his pocket. It had been small enough to leave in a crack in the wall. A message, for him. To let him know what was to come.
  
  To tell him what to do.
  
  His eyes went back to the white lines on Ren’s arms. He painted them on and put on his mask to come out from his house, but he was not wearing his suit. It was bizarre.
  
  The answer was easy: He hadn’t expected to be killed.
  
  If he had, he would have come prepared.
  
  But he had not been, because why would he have been? No hero disliked him. He was becoming more popular, after his numerous confrontations with Geome and his pledge to take her down once and for all. (He would never get to do that now, Adlai told himself, then immediately felt his heart knock against his ribcage.) He would not have let a villain kill him. He was too smart and his power was too good at getting him out of trouble. The ability to change into anything that could bleed had always served him well. He could turn into a crow, his favorite animal, and fly away from any danger if he needed to. Or a mouse, to scurry away.
  
  Maybe he had been distracted before he was killed. Maybe he had been tricked. Maybe he had been overwhelmed. Maybe there was a new villain out who had a vendetta against him. Maybe a hero did it. Maybe it was an accident. Or maybe a friend had lured him out and sliced his neck before he could even realize what was happening.
  
  Maybe Adlai Marlowe knew exactly what had happened, or maybe he had absolutely no idea.
  
  There were footsteps and a gasp behind him and he turned toward it, even though he did not know what he had looked like until that very moment. There was a boy there, with dark hair and glasses, looking down at the body. Adlai was simultaneously grateful he had put his mask on but also regretting putting his mask on, since it was so easily recognizable.
  
  Maybe this boy would not know who he was. There was a slim chance, but any chance was worth hoping on. Even if he did not know who he was, though, the body was still at his feet and he still had bloodied hands and blood on his cheek and in his hair.
  
  He was definitely screwed. He stayed quiet and stepped away from the body, making sure the note was still in his pockets and that his hands were still stuffed into them. They were, and the note was, as well.
  
  The note that said NEXT: SPITFIRE OR CAPRICORN.
  
  He should have never grabbed it.
  
  And he really wished it was raining so that the water could wash all of this away.
