GALARIAN STORIES
Part 1: Our Sub-Ordinary Lives
~~~
Orange and pink streaks began to ark across the dark blue tinted sky. Clouds hung sparsely in the cool morning sky, and the colorful array of fall tree leaves fluttered sleepily to the song and dance of the chilly mid-fall breeze. As the sun crested the horizon, the inhabitants of The Island of Galar stirred to life and took to their morning rituals. What was sparsely populated concrete sidewalks and streets just hours ago came alive with chatter as early risers found themselves in each others company. Young trainers emerged from their homes, glints of determination and excitement glittering in their eyes. Wild Pokémon that prowled in the night slinked back into darkness to rest while the usual suspects arose from slumber. The land of Galar moved through its usual routine, but a gloomy air of uncertainty hung in the air. Just four days ago the Islands long standing champion, Icarus Sissons, went missing. The sudden development shocked the population of the island. Despite many attempts to locate the champion, everything about the mans disappearance is entirely a mystery to Galar. Even after four whole days, the Champions disappearance was still the talk of the town. What most saw it as a mystery and a tragedy, but many aspiring Pokémon trainers saw it as an opportunity. Without a standing champion, the spot was open. Trainers flocked to gyms across the region, and even now in the early mornings trainers waited outside of soon to open gyms to challenge its respective gym leader.
For the past four days, life had been a whirlwind for the Gym Leaders of Galar. With the disappearance of Icarus came a barrage of curious journalists, investigators, and even just worried citizens. On top of that, the amount of trainers challenging the Gym Leaders has skyrocketed. The mass of underprepared, starry eyed mass of new Pokémon trainers were constantly entering and exiting the Gyms. Most knew not even the slightest thing about Pokémon battling, but the prospect of becoming the new champion of Galar was just too enticing for them. While many of the new trainers have already come and gone, there was still an abnormal amount of challengers on the normally relatively peaceful island.
Another new day, and another day that Galar was put into shock over the disappearance of their beloved Champion. Talk of the town, he was-Icarus upped and left into the either. At least, that's the best comparison that some people made. And it didn't help that the news broke out, and the influx of trainers flooded the gyms like swarms of Combees and Vespiqueens to honey.
Ripley was no different. Yes, she wanted to help in the search for the region's beloved champion, but her hands were tied-with gym duties, that is. The influx of challengers practically overwhelmed the poor 'leader, and they tried their best keeping up with the demand. The first day or so, Ripley was able to answer journalists with ease and kept up with the energy of trainers flocking to their doorstep, but now...
Now, Ripley just wanted to relax with her Bug-Type Pokemon.
The gym leader was already up and at 'em, tending to her gym challenge. They had to look nice for the upcoming wave, and the Garden Pattern Vivillons that were fluttering around her didn't make it any easier, but the poor things were just curious; Ripley could feel that the stress was getting to her wild-housed Pokemon faster than what had happened in her entire gym career.
Once this set of flowers were watered, Ripley pulled out sugar cubes for the Vivillons, and they perked up and took the sugary treat. Anything to help their bug-types de-stress was a welcome addition to the gym for the moment, and the Pokemon fluttered off with ease. Most of the gym's bug gardens was taken care of now, all that was left was the outside ones-but those would have to wait for the moment. Y'know, because of all the trainers waiting for their badge.
Setting the watering can down for the moment, the gym leader called over one of their attendants-a regular at the gym, to help the events run as smoothly as possible. A few words were exchanged, and the attendant gave a curt nod before rushing off to alert Dan that the gym was ready for challengers. A moment passes, before Ripley puts a gloved hand to the bridge of their nose, an audible exhale leaving their lips. There wasn't anything they were forgetting, was there...?
No matter, there were more important things to take care of-so, after getting a moment to compose herself, she slipped off her gloves and tossed them aside into a bin near the exit of the challenge course. Ripley knew her way around the stadium, and did a few light stretches in a locker room to help take some of the tension out of their arms and legs to prepare for the next wave of eager trainers taking the initiative.
"Another long day today, I guess." Ripley mused to themselves, finishing out their stretches with a shake of their head. Whatever kind of team was going to challenge them today, she would play fair and square. That's how a gym leader conducted themselves, after all.
Troublesome Day
Helena Letia
Facing Troubles
Helena had a hypothesis: the universe was determined to keep her single. The very day she decided to focus more on her romantic life, Icarus Sissons, the region's Pokemon Champion, disappeared. She had to teleport to escape the crowd in Hammerlocke. Even then, visitors flooded her gym and left her no time to plan a romantic escapade or look for someone to go on a romantic escapade with.
"So like. I'm very busy."
"""Ha...""" "..."
"Like. I think this is enough sun. Silene."
Silene the Slowking agreed. She waved a lazy hand above, and the thin barrier above them dissipated. A chorus of sigh sounded, followed by creaking and movement on several sunloungers. Occasions where one could bask under a warm sun was highly sought after in Galar. Helena preferred to make the occasion when she wanted to sunbath, and some of her pokemon, Silene, Aster the Alakazam, and Daphne the Hatterene, had also taken a liking to the pastime. So, she put on a pair of shades and changed into a black bathing suit.
A cheerful ruckus came from the training field in front of the sunbathing crowd. Sweetie the Reniclus was chasing Gladiole the Gallade in a psychic tag. Teleport, Protect, and Imprison flashed everywhere as they ran around. Xyris the Xatu observed with his usual stillness. Overall, it was another harmonious day at the Lake of Outrage Psychic Gym.
...eh, where's the challengers? It couldn't be helped, the ferry that connected the Giant's Cap to the gym was under repair, so the only way to go now was with a water or flying pokemon. Then, one had to be prepared for fighting wild pokemons above the lake, too, so most people wouldn't bother.
Eh? Why would the ferry need repairing at the first place? It was damaged in a pokemon battle. Eh? Why would a pokemon battle happen on a ferry at the first place?
...
The sun is nice, thought Helena, the gym leader who fought a trainer with 1 gym badge on the ferry and accidentally damaged the ferry. Who knew Moonblast from a Lunatone would be so strong?
FELICIA DE VALOIS
cd7324d66be2639c3507cf1d76982ba0.jpg The doors to the Galar Police Station slammed open violently as a young girl stormed outside. She stomped angrily down the steps as a slightly overweight disgruntled Police Chief ran out after her. "Officer Valois! Don't you dare walk away from me!" He barked gruffly to Felicia, rushing down after her. Felicia spun around to face him, glaring daggers into him. "Ye hae th' gall tae tak' me aff this case 'n pat me oan some foockin' shodday routine boat inspeicshun! 'S foockin' boolshite! Fook ye yae jobby deck!" She hissed back angrily. "A dinnae wirk fur ye, A'm a Prava' Inveis'aygai'or!" She spun back around and continued on her way, leaving the Police Chief standing arms crossed on the steps up to the Police Station. He shook his head and with a disappointed sigh headed back inside.
Felicia was livid as she stormed down the streets of Wyndon. Something interesting finally happens and she isn't allowed to be part of the investigation, all because she is "potentially related" to the incident, whatever that meant! "Fookin boolshite!" She exclaimed, winding her foot back to launch a loose rock a couple feet. A couple early rising citizens shot her concerned looks and steered clear of the volatile young Gym Leader. She continued to grumble to herself, crossing her arms and marching angrily through the morning streets. The way to the Corviknight taxi service was a ways away, leaving Felicia with a lot of time to stew over her thoughts. Her anger dissipated rather quickly and ideas started to worm their way into her crafty little brain. She hopped aboard the air taxi with one hand rubbing her chin. She had an idea, but if it was to be successful, she was going to need some help. "Loch Ootrage, Fest!" She exclaimed with newfound excitement as she shut the cab door. The Corviknight cawed in response and with a heavy flap of its wings, was in the sky on its way to Lake Outrage.
Felicia was quite out of breath and with a much renewed anger when she jogged onto the lakefront. She squinted at the crowd in the distance to confirmed her suspicions. A group of strange looking Pokémon teleporting around meant only one thing. Helena. Felicia sighed and mumbled to herself. "Fookin fanah'lay." She had checked a couple of places for the Psychic Gym Leader before coming here. She had assumed Helena would be at her gym doing her job, after all. Not here relaxing by the water. She ran across the sandy lakeside towards the Gym Leader. She waved at the group as she approached, calling out. "Aye, Heil'na! A naed yaer 'alp!" It took her a moment to reach the other Gym Leader. "Yae doon' ma-" Felicia stopped mid sentence as she finally took a moment to finally actually examine Helena. She was used to seeing the aloof woman in more professional, elegant garments. Sunbathing obviously called for a different sort of clothing. Clothing Felicia wasn't quite mentally prepared for. She looked the other gym leader up and down a couple of times with wide hazel eyes. Her face grew beet red and she pulled an arm up to cover her eyes up, recoiling backwards and swiped at the air between the two of them. "Ack! Pat oan some cloathes, lady! I dinnae knoaw waet yaer tryaeng yae jobby deck! Indaecein'! D-Desgoostaen!" Felicia squeaked obscenities embarrassedly at the older woman as she covered her eyes and turned away. It was certainly an odd reaction out of most, but it was pretty normal for Felicia.
SAPHIRA TORRES
Mornings used to be a peaceful affair — down the steady slope of the morning coming into focus. A trickle of sunlight and clouds entwined with the fresh cup of coffee between her tender knuckles. It was the only time in the day where Saphira was a little slower. She was a little more languid and relaxed, curving her spine into the office chair. But the news of the Champion's disappearance was a tidal wave. It rocked the foundation of the island and suddenly everyone wanted a slice of heaven — the pie of fame — recognition that came with the admiration of the adoring masses. She didn't personally care in the coming days but the concern was palpable and even Saphira was starting to crack under her nonchalance. Slithering from her pink hues and filling her mouth with another regretful sigh, tipping back the liquid with a fragment of remorse. A morsel indeed, chipping at her teeth in a way her tongue was heavy.
"We are already booked again today."
Another groan was heard out in the hallway, blaring outside of her door. Saphira tucked a few fingers to her forehead. "Who knew you wanting a vacation would turn into this crap." She grumbled to herself - the only company was the horrible paintings of her 'older mentor' and a scattered selection of family. She had never been presumed the type to be sentimental but her boxed office was the only witness for her softer side. Draining the last of the filtered coffee, Saphira was up from her chair and dropping the cup down on the edge - tapping twice. "Be okay loser."
She rolled her shoulders uncomfortably, unwinding from the precious few seconds she got to remain still. Saphira was out from her office and into the distorted candy cane hallways. She was supposed to decorate but she wasn't in the mood to remove the old reminders that wasn't always going to be hers - she'd be leaving her mark soon enough for the next gym leader to mull over.
Watching the flurry of Pokemon and trainers under Saphira's tutelage in a rising panic wasn't fun.
"Listen up! We are doing a of formation four today - creating a blockage for the newest punks who think themselves worth a damn. Pelt them with all you got." She threw up her thumb with the resounding choruses of 'okays' and 'let's go, boss!' at her. She smirked lightly at the praise. It was too much bloody effort to come up with any glittery or sparkly puzzles for the host of unwanted trainers to be doing. She didn't mind the usual flood. This wasn't the usual, however, everyone was hopped on 'dreams' and 'aspirations' and a drive replicated by selfishness that turned her pink eyes positively black with annoyance. Her throat itched to say something but these were kids and kids didn't know the meaning of strength and hard work.
"Time to crush some dreams." Saphira cackled loudly, pounding a closed fist into an open palm - turning all that annoying energy into a newfound drive. A newfound drive to collapse the walls of want. It perhaps didn't help Hatterne was already out of her ball, favourably nicknamed Diamond and mimicking Saphira's actions. The new beginning team had a temporary fixture for today.
It was crowded outside the entrance to the Normal Gym Stadium, but that was to be expected given the state of the region at large. Tabitha sat at a table that she had set up with her gym staff, registering each interested trainer using the gym's rotom machine. Near the table, the crowd began to form into some form of line. It has been rowdier near the start, but the older trainers had quieted down with the number of young kids and small pokemon. On Tabitha's instructions, some indeedee had been sent out into the crowd to deliver drinks and snacks to the waiting trainers and their pokemon.
Most of the crowd did not recognize her, at least not from a distance, so it wasn't impossible to manage the level of excitement from the eager would be champions. After setting up the scheduling protocol, Tabitha got up to take a break, heading back inside the stadium. Her eevee was quick to scamper up to greet her, and so she knelt down to let it climb up her arm and onto her shoulder.
"Hey there Dusky," Tabitha greeted her Eevee as it nuzzled her cheek. "Things are getting pretty crazy out there, so we should probably see how the others are doing."
Deciding to start with one of their newest leaders, Tabitha pulled out her rotom.
"Rotom, call Claudia."
The rotom phone chimed energetically to indicate that the call was connecting.
It was not a good time to be a Gym Leader. The swarms of inexperienced trainers, the complete lack of any free time, the even more questions and interviews than usual, the whole “the undisputed Champion of Galar is missing” thing…the list goes on. Especially if one happened to be positioned in a convenient location for challengers, say for an absolutely hypothetical example, right next to Wyndon.
There wasn’t even a chance to leave. Sure, 70% of the challengers couldn’t even beat the first trainer, and the other 30% that actually got to the end were just boring curb stomps, rolling or being rolled, but…er…
Anyways, it was time to get started setting up the challenge. After curating the playlist (mashing shuffle), preparing refreshments (pouring instant coffee into a hip flask), and changing into her gym outfit (t-shirt and shorts, admittedly not the best clothing for the chilly weather), Claudia decided to check on the crowd outside, maybe take a picture as a “You seeing this?” kind of thing. Putting on some sunglasses and leaving through the gym’s back door, she snuck up to the village of trainers out front, choosing to hide in a bush. She snickered as she took some photos of the horde while doing a bad nature documentary narrator voice.
Right there, we see a prat in an unnatural habitat showboating, thinking he’s a hotshot for having a Sandslash. He seems to be participating in a feeding frenzy, eating…actual food.”
The meaty, sweet, almost spicy scent of prepackaged curry in the air was strong, to the point of being overwhelming. To Claudia, who had been reduced to eating leftovers and cold, third rate takeaway delivered under cover of night, it was tempting to walk out of the bush and comandeer the stuff for herself. The sound of her stomach grumbling was loud, almost as loud as one of her shows. The only thing that could have topped it in volume was-
Ring ring ring! Ring ring ring!
The sound of her phone ringing while she was hiding in a bush…and the sound of concrete scraping as everyone turned to face the bush she was cowering in.
Tabitha waited for the call to connect, wondering for a moment if her fellow gym leader was too busy to answer. It was likely hard to get away from the crowds, though some were certainly better at it than others. She herself was glad that she could take advantage of her rather innocuous presence to get time to herself when she needed it. Especially in this particular instance. Tabitha smiled a bit when the Rotom pinged and the call was connected.
"Hello? Claudia? Is everything alright?" Tabitha asked, sitting down in one of the stadium chairs as her Eevee made itself comfortable on her shoulder. "From what I've heard, all the gyms on the mainland are pretty swamped right now, so I figure it's the same for you. I wanted to touch bases and make sure you're doing alright."
