Kaiden Lachlan and Alexander Brennan (along with the Smith Clan)

Kai felt a snort of amusement slip out as he nodded. “Lead the way. From there we can make it to the gate. Papa might be patrolling the fence, especially if Dad was as upset as I remember.” Kai said with a sigh, remembering how angry and upset his dad had been. Suddenly Kai wasn’t so sure he wanted to go back but he had to. He couldn’t live with this pain. Alex simply shook his head as he walked, his eyes up ahead and a smile on his face. He was happy that everyone was getting along though soon they’d be separate and Alex would be headed home.

That snort grabbed his attention, and yet again, Ezekiel found himself looked over at Kaiden. Drawn. That was the only way to describe this. He smirked as they moved. Theo patted Kai’s back. “Don’t worry, man. He’s just going to be happy to see you. He can’t stay mad at you that long. He never has been able to. He just loves you too much for that.” Theo was sure that this was hard for Kai for numerous reasons, but he had seen Hayden with Kai for all of their years. Theo could only wish that his parents were so dedicated to him. More than a few times, he felt that Kai’s parents and even uncles were more invested in him. It was fine. He knew that his parents were busy, and they loved him. Just too busy to hang out with him like Hayden did with Kai. Ezekiel was intrigued. They seemed very big on family as well. Far more than he was. Or at least far more than he thought he was until he had Alex.

Kaiden looked at Theo and gave a small smile at the pat. Fortunately, it wasn’t as painful where Theo patted him. “I don’t know. I wasn’t exactly.. nice with my words and I shouldn’t have run away.” He said quietly. He knew his dad loved him, but that was a side of Hayden that Kai had never seen, not really. That quiet anger. That disappointment. Alex looked up ahead and then over at the other two. “Looks like we’re really close now to Martyr’s Gate.” Alex said, seeing the familiar landscape.

Ezekiel nodded. “Good eyes. It’s a couple more blocks, and then we reach Martyr’s gate. There were faster ways, but perhaps not with the numerous injuries.” He sighed. He did not want to do this. He wanted to do this. He should not have to do this. He absolutely had to. Even if Kaiden made him angry. Furious. Even if he stole away his sleep every night since they met. Even if he was the reason that they had unlocked something so tragic and horrible in himself. “I want… to apologize.” He was usually so good at that. “I should not have been so led astray by my emotions.” He considered saying that he did not mean to hurt him, but that would have been a lie. “May you heal quickly.”

Alex smiled as he heard that, and he was also happy that it was so close. Kai was also happy to hear that, though his attention went to Ezekiel. Apologize? But Kaiden took it too far. He shouldn’t have used Alex against him. That was unfair of him. “I apologize too. I shouldn’t have said what I did. And.. thank you.” He said, after a long pause. Then silence fell over them as they walked. Kaiden didn’t speak, but he stole glances over at Ezekiel every so often. He was trying to figure out just what made him so.. drawn to the man. It was annoying, it was frustrating and he hated.. and at the same time, he didn’t seem to want to stop interacting with him either. “Look up ahead. Isn’t that the cement barrier just ahead?” Alex asked, pointing forward.

Things were nice, and then they were awkward. Theo hated awkward, because he never knew what to do when life got that way. Was he supposed to do something to make it less quiet? The silence was so much. It wasn’t like a bad silence, but it also wasn’t a good one really. Ezekiel tried to look ahead, though he too kept glancing over. How could someone so irritating be so… interesting? As Alex mentioned the cement barrier, he caught Kaiden’s eyes. He did not mean to, but he did. The moment that he did, his breath was gone. Every word they passed between them came at him like a volley. Every look. Every touch. He could not seem to pull away. Theo, realizing that Ezekiel was apparently otherwise distracted, tried to say something to cut the tension. Was that tension? “Sure does look like a cement barrier. Hey, uh, guide. Wanna help us out there?” Ezekiel stared a moment longer before he blinked and pulled his attention away. “Um…” He looked towards the barrier. “Yes. Martyr’s gate is just over that.” He looked literally anywhere else.

Kaiden sat in the silence for a moment, and when he heard mention of a cement barrier, he had been looking at Ezekiel again. And then the tension built, brick by brick as every interaction between them stormed through Kai’s body like a hurricane. Tossing and turning his mind and his body. It was weird, it was.. nice. What? Stop that. He’s a brute.. but was he really? Or was Kai just seeing that side because it was all he could see? As Theo spoke, Kaiden shook himself free and looked ahead. He focused on the barrier as they drew closer, and then he realized. “I.. can’t climb over that. Laying down and standing up were difficult enough but my back.. I can’t climb.” Kaiden’s voice was soft, unsure in tone. Alex could make it over.. with help. But both men were unsure of how to solve this particular problem.

Ezekiel bit the inside of his cheek as he tried to recollect himself and orient on the task at hand. Over the barrier. This was an easy jump and climb for him, though he did not have a hurt back. It would make sense that this would be a problem. He did not even consider it. What were they going to do about it now? Kaiden’s back was significantly worse than Alex’s. Alex had surface wounds. Kaiden’s clearly ran deep. And Ezekiel made them worse. Kaiden did push. He said so many things that made him regret ever saving this man. Regret? Was it regret? No. When he thought about Kaiden being dead, he did not like it. He did not like anyone dead, really. That was it. That was definitely it. He breathed in deeply, willing for Her guidance to wash over him. “Then we move around.” He moved away from Alex, making sure that he would not fall, and said, “Give me a moment.” He backed up and swiftly turned around, scanning the area as quickly as possible. “There are numerous shops in this area. We can go through them...” This would not get them to Martyr’s Gate but to the other side where they needed to go. Or, perhaps, where the wolves needed to go. “But they are dangerous. We do not go through these, because they are infested with demons. I do not know how many.”

Alex and Kai both looked at Ezekiel when he said that. Around? He listened to the man, and thought about his words. “So your plan is to get two injured people, who need help moving, through shops infested with infected?” He asked, eyes narrowed but tone incredulous. Alex sighed and shook his head. “That won’t work Ezekiel. Normal patrols don’t go through there and they have healthy warriors. We have two injured and two healthy. There must be another way.” Alex said, thinking for a moment. “What if.. you two hold Kai like a board? One on the head and shoulders, the other with the legs? Then you can climb over and he lays flat. Shouldn’t hurt more than normal laying down.” Alex suggested. Kaiden blinked at that suggestion, it made.. a lot more sense even if it was.. awkward.

Ezekiel had considered doing something similar, but he could not see the feasibility. “Keeping him straight while climbing without the use of every limb seems impractical.” Too many variables could fall apart in this scenario. “This is assuming that we do not need to use our hands and arms to move upward. Or assuming that we can do so with only one. This is also assuming that we can keep him up with only one.” He huffed in frustration as he moved to the barrier. “At least going through the buildings would not have three of us compromised.” He did see the reason for not wanting to do that. He also thought it was a needlessly reckless way to go. This entire venture was needlessly reckless. Theo actually agreed with this assessment. “Okay. So no infected trying to murder us in the shops but also you’re not wrong about climbing over while keeping him flat. That would only work if we could lay him on something, and I don’t see a convenient plank around here. So… What if I carry him? Like on my back. It’s gonna hurt, but it wouldn’t be for very long. And he could keep as straight as he can while I still have my limbs for climbing.” Ezekiel hissed out a breath of annoyance. “Because that is a better plan than the last two. It isn’t even that hard of a barrier to move over.”

Kaiden listened and thought about the scenario. There was no real good way to go about this. And once again that anger flared at Ezekiel for injuring his back. He looked at Theo, hearing his suggestion and hummed, nodding. “That could work.” Kaiden agreed and Alex nodded. Then Kai heard the hiss of annoyance and his words. His eyes flashed and clenched his teeth. “Need I remind you of why we’re even having this conversation? Or would you like matching back pain.” Kaiden said, his voice harsh as they made it to the barrier.

Ezekiel snapped his attention straight to Kaiden. “Need I remind you that you are the one reckless enough to have an old injury that can so easily be this aggressively agitated?” He took several long strides to be a whole lot closer to the rest of the group and also his single subject. Yet again, the world was fading into the background as he glared at him. “I doubt you would be able to replicate anything in your self-created condition.” Theo stepped forward and raised a hand that he planned to use to get between them if he had to. “Uh huh, and we’re not doing the arguing thing, because we’re friends, remember? Friends choose to help each other like we are doing right now and not-“ “Do you always need to have an opinion on matters that do not pertain to you?” Ezekiel growled at the other. Theo took a step back involuntarily. This got so intense so fast. “Um, okay, carrying Kai over a barrier now…”

Kaiden locked eyes with Ezekiel and narrowed his eyes. “It was an old accident.” He growled, noticing Ezekiel getting closer to him. “You wanna try me? I’m sure I could find a way.” He retorted as Alex sighed, shaking his head. Kai saw Theo raise a hand and speak, but his eyes flashed at the comment from Ezekiel. “Leave him alone.” He ground out, glaring at him. Kaiden saw Theo took a step back and Alex stepped forward, resting his hand on Ezekiel’s shoulder. “Enough. Okay?” He said as Kai tore his gaze from Ezekiel and looked at Theo and nodded. “I’m ready to be carried.” Kai said.

Did he want to try him? Yes. Every fiber of his being itched to prove that his words were right. That Kaiden was not good enough to best him. That his injuries were bad enough to be more than an impediment. Even if that would not prove the rest, whatever that rest was that sat at the back of his brain, it was something. He wanted it. He fumed as he listened to those words. “I will not-“ The hand on his shoulder stopped him. His eyes moved to it and then to the rest of Alex. Enough. He huffed. Puffed. Could have blown a house down. “Okay.” Theo waited a moment to see if Ezekiel was going to move. He apparently was not. So he moved to the barrier and crouched to about where he thought would be good. “Alright, man, let’s get over this thing.” As Ezekiel watched, he felt a pang of anger not just towards Kaiden but also towards Theo. He could not explain why, but as Theo summoned Kaiden, all that rage he was trying to quell came bubbling back up. He shoved his arms over his chest and seethed.

Kaiden almost wanted to hear the rest of those words. Wanted to know just what he was going to say until Alex’s hand stopped it. He heard him huff, puff and he bit his retort back. Kaiden could sense this wasn’t over but it was for the now. Kaiden gave one more glance to Ezekiel, saw him shove his arms over his chest and seemed to still be angry. Kai turned away and walked to Theo, carefully and cautiously climbing onto his back. His arms wrapped around his neck, and his legs wrapped around his waist. “Okay buddy. Let’s get moving. The sooner we do, the sooner we get home.” Kaiden told him, his back still twinging painfully. Alex looked at Ezekiel and followed the other two, holding a hand out. “Support me while I climb over?” Alex asked him.

Theo tried to move as quickly as he could. As he climbed over, he inundated Kai with things like, “I’m so sorry,” and “I’m moving as fast as I can,” and “This really sucks, man. I wish it wasn’t so bad for you.” Finally, as they moved to the other side and got to the ground, Theo tried to move so that he was supporting rather than manipulating Kai. “Are you okay? I wish there could have been a better way.” Ezekiel was watching probably too intensely and too long when Alex pulled his attention away again. He closed his eyes and asked for Her guidance once more. He nodded, opened them, and as he moved to the barrier and positioned himself to be Alex’s support, replied, “Always.” He meant that more than anything else. He would always be there to support Alex.

Kaiden heard every word Theo said, but his mind was still thinking about Ezekiel. Stop Kaiden he chastised himself. “It’s okay.” Kai said, as they finally made it over the barrier. When Theo set him down, he used him as support. “I’m fine. Once they’re over, we can get moving.” Kai was done, he was getting frustrated at the pain and annoyed, and angry. Alex looked at Ezekiel and after Kai and Theo were over, he placed a hand on Ezekiel’s arm and used it to push himself up and over the barrier with a soft hiss of pain. Once over he paused, waiting for his support to climb over. From there it was the wolves turn to lead them.

“You still wanna have them come along?” Theo was happy to have Alex, but he was becoming more and more wary of how Kai and Ezekiel were together. When one of them was so much as annoyed at literally anything, the other one was jumping on it without hesitation. How much more was this going to be before they finally made it home? Did they even want to show these two how to get to their home? Ezekiel was more or less distracted. He stayed where Alex needed, but as he took the time to move, Ezekiel’s mind wandered. Wandered to Kaiden. Again. To him clinging to Theo’s back, and that made him so angry. He decided this was likely the entire situation. He was angry with Kaiden obviously. Not Theo. But he was angry at Theo too. He was just so angry. He had to pull it together to be there for Alex. Alex needed him to focus. So he did. Poorly. But enough. He got Alex over, and in order to climb down, he simply jumped down so that he could support from below Alex which was bound to be better. “Where to now, wolves?”

Kaiden thought about that for a moment before he nodded. “Yeah. It’s easier and having him hold my pack while you help me is better.” He admitted quietly. Alex wrapped his arm on Ezekiel’s shoulders and used him as support. Kaiden looked at Ezekiel and sighed. “This way.” He said, turning with Theo to start the same journey they traveled a few days ago when they came to leave the note. “Theo, what about the fence we climbed over? Should we do the same thing then too?” He asked his brother, curiously.

Ezekiel didn’t like the whispering. The quiet talking. The secrets. He didn’t like not knowing what they were saying to each other. He added fuel to the already raging fire. He tried to distract himself with again looking anywhere else, but then all he could see were the exaggerated whispers of the two. He followed quietly. Theo pictured the fence. “I mean, we know where that is. And maybe the rest will too so they’ll notice us and get you back to Jacob faster. I mean, not ideal but not terrible, right?”

Kaiden thought about that for a moment and nodded. "Perhaps Papa and Uncle Soren are patrolling the fence, and they'll see us." Kaiden said, praying that for once, they were out there again looking for them. But he also wanted to make sure they didn't see the two Seraphites with them. Alex looked at Ezekiel and then at the two men. "So how far to this fence are we going to get?" Alex asked his brother curiously.

Theo shrugged. “It’s probable. We’d be patrolling now anyway, so they may have said they would be in the areas they thought we might be.” He didn’t see a world where they weren’t doing that, especially if Hayden had any say. It would be shocking if anyone got to have a break honestly. Ezekiel was not sure. “Close enough to see it and make sure they make it to their other side safely. Then we should go.” He did not want to be close to the wolves who were less kind to Seraphites. “I have a question. Are there any women in your family?” He was curious. They mentioned a lot of people but never any women.

Kaiden nodded as he heard that and he kind of wanted his dad to be overprotective, since it would be a lot easier to get through the fence than over it. Alex looked at Ezekiel and nodded. “That sounds like a good plan.” He agreed, not sure how the other wolves were and he didn’t want to be seen. Kai looked at Ezekiel and thought for a moment. He looked at Theo before he sighed. “We have Theo’s mom, and that’s it. We used to have two women in our family, my mother and his. But now it’s just her.” Kaiden explained, before glancing at Theo. He hoped that was okay to say.

Interesting. He thought they might have mentioned Theo’s mother before in the many discussions. Only one now. That was so different to the way that the families on the island worked. He really could not fathom it. Or maybe he could, and that was the part that made him uneasy. Theo nodded. “Yep, that’s it. But honestly, she’s not really around much. Neither is my dad. They are a lot older, you know? And they were super busy all the time with FEDRA, so they didn’t hang with the rest of the family. Now, even though they’re retired, they don’t hang out too much. They’re about Uncle Soren and Uncle Jacob’s age, but they feel way older.” So he may have gotten lost in the question. “Okay, point is, yes, we have a single woman, and she’s my mom.” Ezekiel was intrigued. “We do not have those kinds of family on the island.”

Kaiden knew that he really had only met Theo’s parents a couple times. Then his attention turned to Ezekiel when he heard his response. “What do you mean? What kinds of families do you have on your island?” He asked, curiosity dripping in his words. He had never thought about how their family was different. To him, it was just his family, it was just what it was. Alex was just as intrigued about this kind of family, and wondered if that was possible on the island. He’d never met anyone with this kind of family and it was so fascinating.

The morning started quiet, Josh had woken up with Hayden in his arms. And after spending time with him, he promised he’d patrol for Kaiden and Theo. So he was on his way to Soren and Jacob’s room and once there. He knocked on the door, he wanted to talk to his best friend anyway about what happened with his husband after they split and a patrol around the perimeter would be the best way to talk and he could fulfill his promise to his husband to search the fence for their son and his best friend.
