Theo listened, easily imagining the two of them standing in this room. Neither of them were particularly good at being kind to one another. “Kaiden Lachlan, you walked into a room all alone with an aggressive scar who specifically doesn’t like you and started spouting his own ugly back at him?” No wonder it went poorly. “You ever thought about not letting someone else’s rude or cranky goad you? Because seriously, man.” He pulled out the other blanket and threw it down.

Ezekiel could not be with everyone else. He had to be away from them all. Out of control. How was that trustworthy enough to be around someone young and impressionable like Alex? Someone so kind and willing to learn about others. Willing to accept. Ezekiel had been so willing earlier. What happened? How had this gone so wrong? He found himself in another room as in bad a shape as the rest. That was where he could stay.

Kai looked down at the ground, specifically not looking at Theo. “Well. Yes. I was trying to be polite at firsf. Offering to sleep somewhere else. But.. then I threatened to take Alex away and give him more scars, and called him a scar too. But he.. it’s never gotten physical like that before. He rammed me into the wall, then had his hand on my throat, and I’m pretty sure he saw the wince the first time and did the same thing again to my back.” Kai replied, as if trying to make it seem like he didn’t try to start anything nor did he feed into it when he did feed into it.​

Darn it. “Seraphite. Right. Ooh, that’s so hard to remember.” He groaned and said it several times in his mind. Seraphites. Seraphites. Seraphites. “So, you both were searching for a fight? Because that’s clearly what was happening earlier.” Theo wasn’t sure what was happening quite yet. He was going to figure it out but not yet. Not yet. “Kai, is this about your dad? Are you taking out your frustrations on this guy because he’s an easy target? Or because he’s also looking for a fight?” He frowned. “Maybe he’s dealing with something like that too? Or maybe not. He could just be rude.” Theo leaned against him just a little but not too much. “I don’t know. I don’t know anything.”

Kaiden looked away, biting his lip. He’d knew what they were called. He’d used the slur on purpose, to rile his.. friend up. No. Not friend. Clearly. He blinked at the question and looked up at Theo. “No. It’s not about dad! It’s.. I don’t know. But it’s not that. We’re just looking for a fight, and we seem drawn to fight with each other. That’s it.” Kai said, feeling Theo lean on him a little. “Look, this isn’t me taking my frustrations out on someone else, this is just.. two very different people who clearly can’t get along. Now can we drop it? I’m kind of tired.”​

Theo didn’t believe it. He felt like to had to be more than that, but he didn’t think pushing it was a good idea. He raised both of his hands and nodded. “Fine. It’s just…” he sighed. “It’s fine. You’re fine. I’m sure. Get some rest?” He laid down, using his jacket as a pillow. He closed his eyes and hoped that he could sleep. He was not hopeful.

Kaiden did not want to talk more about it. He was thankful when Theo decided to drop it. “You get some rest too.” Kaiden told him, closing his eyes. And his night was restless and painful. Every time he went to turn, his back reminded him that was not a good idea. And overall he managed probably three hours of sleep. He was awake much of it, thinking. Was there more between their fights? Was Kaiden missing something? Or was this really about him getting his frustration out? No matter how he thought about it, nothing made sense. He was up early, head turned to look at the sunrise through the window.

Alex slept okay, though every now and then he’d startle awake at a sound. He wasn’t used to sleeping alone. And he couldn’t move well. He ended up waking up around sunrise, and while he was mostly sore, he was okay. Alex sat up, looking for his brother. He didn’t like being alone anymore awake then he did asleep.​

Theo laid there for a while, trying to make sense of the day, until he finally fell asleep. He slept alright. He woke a few times, but otherwise got his rest as well as one could on the floor of a crumbling building long since abandoned. He still slept as the sun rose.

Ezekiel did not sleep. Well, he dozed occasionally when his body got tired and he finally sat on the floor. He leaned his head and back against the wall. After hours and hours of thinking about this, going through waves where it was all his fault and then it was all Kaiden’s, he dozed for a while. A small while. He maybe slept two hours throughout the night. He was up long before the sun. He wandered the abandoned building the last hour or so.

Kaiden gritted his teeth, and shifted, sitting up and swallowed the gasp of pain. He didn’t want to wake up his brother. As long as they made it back today, he could fight through the pain to do so. He sat like that for a while before he nudged Theo. “Theo? Are you awake?” He asked, watching his brother carefully.

Alex sat up, his back was sore but he managed to get on his feet. He put his bow on his back before he started walking down the hall. He looked spend, searching for Ezekiel or for Kai and Theo. He poked his head in one to see Kaiden and Theo. He knocked on the door frame and Kai waved him in. “Hey, I’m.. I’m sorry for Ezekiel.” Alex said softly. Kaiden sighed and smiled. “It’s fine.” He said quietly.​

Theo stirred as Kai nudged him. He groaned sleepily and stretched as he listened to the voices around him. Was that Alex? He looked from Kai to the person at the door. Alex! “Hey, buddy. What are you doing up? Aren’t you supposed to be like Kai and not moving around due to the pain and suffering?”he stretched again and then stood up to move over to Alex. “You need help? You can come sit with us. I would have invited you to come sleep with us, but… I didn’t think Cranky Zeke would like that very much.” He paused. “Where is… Cranky Zeke?”

Kaiden looked at Theo when he woke up, and then over to Alex. Alex blushed and shook his head. “I’m fine. Better than yesterday. Little sore but I was.. wondering if you could check my back before we leave? I don’t know where Ezekiel went. He left me last night.” Alex admitted which made Kaiden narrow his eyes. “He left you?” His voice was low and rough, perhaps a little anger in his words. He shifted like he was going to stand up but hissed in pain and returned to his spot again.​

Theo eyed Alex before also eyeing Kai. He raised his brows. Made a face. No reason to be angry yet. “Maybe he did whatever he was trying to do last night before…” Kai ruined everything? That wasn’t exactly what he meant, which was why he didn’t say it. “Things got out of hand. Maybe he just wanted everyone to rest? Come here Alex. I can try, but really, I wish we could take you to Jacob. He’s so much better at this than me. I only know basics really.” He put his hand out to Kai. “You sit right there and don’t move. I can hear that pain. None of that.”

Kaiden looked at Theo, narrowed his eyes and huffed. “Say what you want to. Before I ruined everything? And I’m not going anywhere, clearly.” Kaiden said, crossing his arms and sighing. Alex looked between the two and sighed. “I don’t know. All I know is he didn’t keep his word.” Alex muttered as he walked over and slipped off the shirt, exposing his back which admittedly was the worst part of his wounds. He didn’t even know where Ezekiel was.​

“That’s not what I meant,” Theo insisted as he opened up his pack to pull out the supplies in case they needed them. His cool hands touched Alex’s all too warm back. That was a good sign. Meant he was healing. “What I meant was that things went awry probably because of you both. I mean, really Kai, I have never seen you like this with anyone.” He wiped away the grime around the wound from sleeping in a place like this and redressed it. “You’re honestly looking really good. It will suck for a while but you’ll be alright.” He finished and moved around to Alex’s front. “What did he promise you? Kai, do you want me to look?” He thought he would offer even if it didn’t really mean anything. They already knew what was wrong with him.

Kaiden rolled his eyes at that and heard him, mouth set in a firm line. "He just.. gets under my skin." He said quietly, looking away. Alex felt the cool hands on his skin and he sighed at the touch, even if it hurt. He slipped his shirt on as he watched Theo move around his front. "I asked him to be civil, or try and he said he would, then he.. didn't." Alex said softly, as Kaiden shook his head. "You can't help me with this. Sorry Theo. I don't want to risk making it worse so we should just get ready to head back home for the mess we're walking into."​

Theo knew that he couldn’t do anything, but he thought it was worth asking. Under his skin. Interesting. He looked at Alex, but there was no solace that he could find in his friend. He was clearly far too upset for that. He put his hand on Alex’s shoulder and squeezed. “I’m sorry,” he whispered, though he was not sure how much good that would do. He looked at Kai and nodded. “Let me put everything back in the packs. I can carry them. And then…” What did they do about Alex? Did Ezekiel just leave him for real? There was no way. “Then we can go find him before we leave.”

Kaiden looked at the two of them, and sighed softly, this wasn't what he was expecting to happen when they left. Alex felt the hand on his shoulder and the squeeze. "It's okay." He replied, making his way to his feet. Kaiden looked at Theo and nodded. "Okay, just help me up and we can get moving after you get the packs squared away." Kaiden said, and then sighed heavily, knowing they had to make sure that Alex's brother was able to help him home.​

“You got it.” He reached for Kai and helped him up before Theo moved away and started putting all of it back into the packs. The supplies first. Then he folded up the blanket to put back in the packs as well. He looked from Kai to Alex and realized that moving them both around with both packs was going to be a struggle. How did this even happen? “Okay, Kai, you wait here while we go. I guess I can leave your pack until-“ “Hand his pack to me.” Theo whipped his head around to see Ezekiel standing at the door. How long had he been there? It couldn’t have been long, right? “Shoot man, you just about gave me a heart attack. You Seraphites are so sneaky. But also, what?” His voice was slower this time. “Hand. The pack. To me.” Theo blinked and then blinked again. “But we-“ “are going to get you back home first. Alex, we’re going to be late. I will take the blame for this. Once I figure out what we are going to say.”

Kai groaned as he stood up with Theo's help, his teeth clenched as he did. The pain was so bad that it ran down both legs and up towards his shoulders. "Thanks man." Kaiden said as he watched him repack their packs and then he realized that both Alex and him would need help, and they had two packs. He was trying to come up with a solution when he heard that voice again. His eyes narrowed a little almost by instinct before he heard him say that they were going to get them back first. "Why?" He couldn't help the word slip out. Confusion raced through his body as he tilted his head, he hadn't been expecting this at all. Alex looked over at Ezekiel and smiled at him, nodding. "Okay." He said, not sure what had caused this change but he was happy enough about it.​

Theo, still a bit dumbfounded by the change in events, stood there as Ezekiel took Kai’s pack from him. “Because I did that to you. It is only fair that I… make things right.” Theo still was not sure that he was following, but Alex seemed happy with how this was going, and if they were actually on the same side, it would be nice to have someone who knew the area better to help them through until they got to their own territory. “So… you’re coming with us?” Ezekiel moved to Alex’s side and smiled softly. “Yes. We are coming with you.” He lowered his voice. “They may not trust me as our leader anymore,” he said with almost a laugh. “Rightfully so, I might add. I am a bit… out of control.” His eyes flicked to Kaiden for a second before moving back to Alex.

Kaiden looked at him, analyzing the man who currently had his pack in his hands. He wasn't expecting such a turn of events, he figured they'd be on their own to figure out their way back home. "Okay. Let's.. get moving then?" Kai asked as he put an arm over Theo's shoulders to use him as support. Alex smiled at Ezekiel and like Kai, put his arm around his brother, seeing that soft smile. Kai had to admit, just a little, that he liked that soft smile on the older Seraphite's face. Alex chuckled. "I still trust you as our leader. But not everyone is perfect, is that not what She tells us?" Alex asked, as he got ready to go. ​

“You are wise beyond your years, young Alexander.” Ezekiel was so proud of him. Prouder of him than he had ever been proud of anyone else. “Far more than I. I grabbed your other clothes,” Ezekiel told Alex. “We can change a little later. It may be easier to help them if you are dressed like them anyway.” If necessary, he could tuck himself away. Alex’s scars would be difficult to hide, but from afar, he would look like one of them. Theo, shocked but pleasantly surprised, started moving him and Kai out of the room. “Alrighty then! So, together journey it is!” He looked at Kai. “As long as you’re okay with this?” He was the one who was attacked.

Alex smiled, feeling the pride in his heart as he nodded once. His qualms from yesterday put to rest as he looked at the other two. “Thank you for grabbing my clothes.” Alex said as Kaiden looked at Theo. “I’m okay with this. It makes sense and I’m not exactly helpful. Having two capable people to get us back home is the smartest move we have right now.” Kaiden said as he gestured for them to get moving. The sooner they got home, the sooner his uncle could fix his back.. again.​

They began to make their way out the way they came until they were back to the rapids. Normally, Ezekiel would say that the fastest way around was to jump across the water and climb up to higher ground where they had so many little bridges. However, that was not going to work with how both Alex and Kai were. “I do not know your territory,” Ezekiel spoke as they moved. “Getting there is not hard nor is it far. Alex, there is no better way to learn new areas than to travel through them.” He glanced at Kaiden. He was not sure why. Maybe it was his guilt for being the one to hurt him so badly. Maybe it was the way that every time he looked at this man, it stirred something that he did not understand. He was still angry. Looking at him made him angry. Or upset. Or uneasy. Something like that. And he just kept looking. He had to hide it as they moved. He worked specifically not to look. It was almost like he was drawn to him in some way. It was frustrating was what it was. He pointed forward. “Is that the way you came?” Theo sort of shrugged. “Thereabouts. We kind of have been roaming.”

Kaiden followed Theo, and Alex looked at Ezekiel, nodding. Kai looked around, avoiding looking at Ezekiel, not sure what made him so.. frustrating to deal with. “We came up this way from the cruise ship. I’m not sure where we should go that’s easiest. Which way did you two come from?” Kaiden asked, looking at the Seraphites, thought his gaze stuck more on the older one. “We came from Martyr’s gate. That isn’t too far from your territory, perhaps we should head that way?” Alex suggested.​

“How fitting,” Ezekiel mused as they walked. That was the place that brought them together. A place of prayers and apparently also notes. Notes with obscure text meant to sound like them yet made by those who did not understand. Did they really want to know more? Was this something they wanted to learn really? “Martyr’s gate is down this way. The way is not too rigorous. I assume you remember how to get to and through your territory from there?” He was a little bit of a dig, but it was also a valid assumption. Theo scrunched his cheeks and let out a kind of whiny sound. “You know, you would think.”
